Welcome to Summer in the city: children with disabilities

Welcome to Summer in the city 2011, your guide on things to do and places to

go during the summer holidays, specifically aimed at children with disabilities

and additional needs in Newcastle. A huge range of activities are being

provided by the city council and other organisations, in venues across the city.

This guide is designed to help you find them.

Many children with disabilities and additional needs will want to join in with

events open to all children and young people. In addition to this guide we

have produced three other guides, aimed at different age ranges that you may also find useful.

Contact the activity providers directly to discuss your particular requirements.

Newcastle City Council have a Get Connected programme that helps families and activity

providers to overcome the barriers that can stop people with additional needs from attending

activities. This can provide advice, training, visits and much more. If you think this would be a

service you could use, contact the Families Information Service on 0191 277 4133

I wish you a great summer, whatever the weather!

John Collings, Executive Director of Children's Services

How to use this guide

All activities listed in this guide are set out in weekly order. Some activities will run through

the whole summer; other activities and events take place only on certain days or weeks.

Please take a look at our other guides for various age ranges.

Pre-booking: Many activities will be very popular and some will require pre-booking. If you

are not sure, please contact the organisation and ask. A telephone number is available for

each activity.

Costs: Many activities and events are free or subsidised by the city council or community

groups. We recommend that you book early because certain activities will fill up fast.

Accompanying your child: In most cases an adult will need to accompany the child, if you

are unsure please ask the venue. Some activities may be able to cater for all ages so please

ring and check.

Disclaimer: We do not endorse or recommend entries in this guide. It is up to you to check

the suitability and safety of any activities your children attend.

Families Information Service (FIS) and online directory

The Newcastle Families Information Service provides up to date information, advice and

assistance on a wide range of services and activities for children, young people, parents and

carers. They have been responsible for finding the information in this guide.

Take a look at their online directory for venue information, as well

as childcare options, holiday clubs and much more.

Family Fun Day at Newburn Activity Centre

Sunday 10 July, 10-4pm, Newburn activity Centre

This event is open to all ‘Useful Vision’ registered children and their immediate siblings. Join

us at Newburn Activity Centre to try water and land based activities such as bell boats and

speed boats, bikes, archery, trampolining and climbing. There will also be a guide dog display

and short demonstration of how a guide dog works so you can meet some of the dogs.

Soft play is available all day; holds a maximum of 30 aged 8 and under. The Sensory Room is

also available to book.

Bring picnic lunch and drinks. Bring folding chairs and picnic blankets if you wish. A named

adult must accompany your child and be responsible for their care and supervision at the

event. To book places for a day of holiday fun phone 0845 6048 491.

Useful Vision invites you to a day of family fun

Wednesday 24 August, 10-2pm at The Alan Shearer Centre, West Denton.

Indoor facilities available include interactive sensory rooms,

ball pool, sensory cave, hydrotherapy pool (bookable on

arrival), new music room, extensive gardens and woodland

walk and internet cafe.

Extra activities include arts and crafts with twottodo, face painting and magic balloon man.

You can even bring your own picnic for the garden or visit the cafe on site. To book places for
