9 TIPS FOR CONSTRUCTING
HIGH-WIND RESILIENT HOMES
Simple techniques to help
builders boost high-wind resilience
in light-frame wood construction.
Fully sheathed walls play a crucial role in enhancing
a building’s structural integrity. A fully sheathed
wall with wood structural panels (plywood or OSB),
properly connected from the foundation below to the
roof above, forms a strong shell that resists the persistent
forces of high winds. The impacts of the most common
high-wind events can be easily mitigated with a few windresistant
construction techniques.
A high-wind-resilient home built with wood structural panels
(WSP) costs a little more than a code-minimum home but can
be several times stronger at resisting lateral wind forces and
provides impact resistance for flying debris. Implementing these
nine tips in the design and construction of residential structures
can help prevent damage caused by high-wind events.
1. Roof Sheathing Attachment
Nail roof sheathing with 8d ring-shank or screw-shank
(0.131” x 2-1/2”) nails at 4 inches on center along the ends of
the sheathing and at gable-end walls and 6 inches on center
along intermediate framing.
2. Gable-End Bracing
One of the weakest links in residential structures during highwind
events is the connection between the gable end and the
wall below. Tie gable-end walls back to the structure.
3. Gable-End Wall Sheathing
Gable-end wall failures are frequently observed in high-wind
events when non-structural sheathing is used. Sheath gableend
walls with wood structural panels.
4. Roof-To-Wall Connection
Under high wind loads, the roof-to-wall connection is
subject to both uplift and shear due to positive or negative
wind pressure on the walls below. For the roof-framing-towall
connection, use a hurricane/seismic framing anchor or
equivalent connector attached on the exterior (sheathing
side) of the exterior walls to transfer loads into the WSP shell.
5. Connection Between Stories
The most effective way to provide lateral and uplift load
continuity is to attach adjacent wall sheathing panels to
common framing. Nail upper-story sheathing and lower-story
sheathing into APA rated rim board.
6. Wood Structural Panel
Wall Sheathing Attachment
Nail wall sheathing with 8d common (0.131” x 2-1/2”) nails
at 4 inches on center at end and edges of wood structural
panels and 6 inches on center along intermediate framing.
This enhanced nailing will improve the resistance of the wall
sheathing panels to negative wind pressure. Staples offer less
resistance to blow-off than nails and so a greater number of
them are required to achieve the same level of resistance.
7. Continuous Wood Sheathing
Continuously sheath all walls with wood structural panels
including areas around openings for windows and doors.
8. Wall Sheathing to Sill Plate
Extend wood structural panel sheathing to lap the sill plate.
The connection of the wall
sheathing panel to the sill plate is important because this is
where uplift forces are
transferred into the sill plate and into the foundation through
the anchor bolts.
9. Anchor Bolts
Space 1/2” anchor bolts 32 inches to 48 inches on center
with 0.229” x 3” x 3” square plate washers.
Full design and construction details, including illustrated
examples, can be found in APA’s Building for High-Wind
Resilience in Light-Frame Wood Construction design guide.

SPECIAL TAMPA SHOW EDITION 2025 43
A Plan of Action to address the need for
more people in the construction trades!
As the current President of the Tampa Chapter #36
of NAWIC, the National Association of Women in
Construction, I feel a responsibility to present my views for
consideration:
What can we do today, now, to help increase the
numbers of people who choose to pursue work in
the construction industry? Tap into the other half of
the population!!! WOMEN!!!
We already know (NAWIC has done the study) that most of
the women currently in construction are there because they
have a family connection in the industry. Let’s add another
connection to the construction industry by becoming a
mentor to women! Take it a step further for our future and
try to erase the root cause which is social pressure, and help
to mentor a young lady!
and protected. There is also much construction work that
happens in an office environment for those that don’t
necessarily even want to be “on-site”. We all may have
an idea of construction in our own minds that doesn’t
necessarily include females and we need to make the effort
to change that for the betterment of the construction
industry!
Social media is FULL of women who are tearing apart their
kitchens, pantries and laundry rooms to make it work and
look better for their families to enjoy!! Females CAN
DO everything the men can do when it comes to
construction! Changing perceptions is key!
Not too handy with the tools yourself? The local home
improvement store has classes available for you and a young
lady to attend!!
The opportunities to have a conversation about
construction work is available when we see road
construction happening on the way around town or even as
we pass one of the new construction developments during
our day. Most people have the opportunity at some point,
even if you live in a rental apartment, to pick up a tool or
two during your life. Perhaps to hang up a picture or put
together furniture! Let’s all choose to involve the kids!! How
about we choose, in particular to involve a young lady?
The important thing is that we encourage them to follow
their own path for their future and not insist they follow
particular paths that “society” tells us is suitable for them.
There are great females in construction and great male
ballerinas in this world and placing limits on people doesn’t
help us as a community as it takes from us those people
who could be so outstanding, successful and passionate in
their fields of interest. I am so curious still about how things
go together, how things work and what new technology or
building materials or methods are out there. Many young
people have a strong curiosity about many things to include
how buildings are built. Let’s always strive to encourage
them to seek the answers they are looking for!! When our
minds expand so does our world.
Perhaps we could all do with a bit of introspection into
our own bias of the construction industry and make sure
to make word choices that encourages and uplifts females
who may be curious about construction?? Do we consider
construction jobs as always being cold, wet, dirty and
difficult as this isn’t always the case. There are many
interior renovation projects that are out of the weather
44 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
The classes are led by competent people and it could
be just the start of helping a young lady gain the
confidence she needs to feel comfortable with thinking of
construction as a potential career choice for the future.
Even if they don’t choose the path of a job in construction,
perhaps they can still feel empowered to build their own
Ikea furniture or hang their own art in their homes??
I have had women ask me where they can get
construction experience themselves. I always tell them to
volunteer for their local Habitat for Humanity build sites
in their communities. They can use the HFH tools and
build homes on the weekends, even during the week days
to earn many hours of experience that they could put on a
resume for a potential job in construction.
The days of a parent asking their kid to come work with
them on a construction site during their summer break
have slowed down. Because of the push to college in the
past several decades, many people have been saddled
with a career trajectory they aren’t passionate about or
interested in. There are also the thousands of dollars in
student loan debt accumulated by pursuing a college
degree and the bills which can hang over the heads of
the former student for decades, perhaps preventing them
from comfortably raising a family or buying their first
home.
There are many people happy and comfortable in a
classroom learning environment who are able to move
through that world and achieve great fulfillment and
success. There are many more who are happiest working
with their hands and minds to achieve success in a
completed build project. That project could be painting
a wall, digging some holes for fence poles, installing new
shelves, installing floor tiles or building a nursing school.
Satisfaction of a job well done that enhances their lives
or the lives of others can be very satisfying work. I have
always thoroughly enjoyed driving through my community
and seeing projects I have worked on and feeling
immense pride in my participation in helping to better my
community!
One of the things we may also lose sight of is that there
already exists a very vibrant training module in most trade
professions providing a “learn while you earn” program to
teach you the trade without also gaining the huge school
loans of a college trajectory. There are also the salaries
to consider for the trades, many which could provide
a comfortable living and with enough determination
and resilience an ambitious person could also have an
excellent standard of living working in the construction
industry.
During each school year in November, at each of my kid’s
schools, I would attend their school’s Great American
Teach-in Events and make a presentation. I continue
to present at the Great American Teach-In at my High
School alma mater and I encourage others to do the same,
particularly if you are already a Women in Construction.
This year, for the first time, our Tampa Chapter #36
of NAWIC, has held their first “Girl’s Construction
Camp” in Pinellas County. We had a four-day camp for
primarily middle school aged girls to build picnic tables that
were to be donated to new homeowners with Habitat for
Humanity. I was filled with joy watching these young ladies
use a compound miter saw on their fourth day of camp and
completing their build project and the joy they experienced!
We had a very successful first camp experience and we are
currently working to add an additional camp to Pinellas
County and one in Hillsborough County as well. A Girls High
School Camp would conclude with a Career Day with local
construction companies making presentations and holding
on-site interviews for positions at their company after
graduation!
What can you do?
Use your voice to encourage others, participate in the Great
American Teach-in, Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity,
Sponsor a Girls Construction Class. Look for opportunities
to mentor a young lady that is interested in the construction
industry!
