The Next Generation

History in the making by

V&W Equestrian

What a year it has been. Filled with many highs but unfortunately

also lows. In August 2024 one of the true pillars of our family

business passed away. Saskia, our loving mother, wife to Paul

and grandmother of Liam and George, is missed every day. And how we

wish we could still share the joy and the great sports moments with her.

Because we've been blessed with many highlights this year, also thanks

to our breeding successes and all our events.

On the cover we’ve featured, one of our family’s favorite artists: David

Trundley. A British artist who is inspired by the beauty of horses and

captures them in the most magical settings.

“Honoring a very memorable

equestrian year”

This year we’re looking back on the second edition of our auction in

Ocala at the beautiful venue of the World Equestrian Centre. And also,

the second edition of our favorite show JPM International, held at

Michel’s farm. We proudly celebrated the 20th edition of the Dutch Sport

Horse Sales, which was a blast! The Limburg Foals Auction once again

created a fantastic podium for the products of the breeders in our area.

Resulting in another record average price per foal at the live edition of

the Limburg Foal Auction. We’ve topped of the year with the HX Auctions

of December, where we provide buyers with the opportunity to acquire

youngsters bred according to the HX philosophy.

This Olympic year was filled with equestrian highlights for everyone.

Among which many reference horses that played great parts at top-level

shows all over the globe. We look back at some of them in the following

pages and their achievements that have made us proud.

We’ve been inspired by many equestrians, underlining that our horse

world is a very special one. Leading us to honor a Hero of all Times:

Ludger Beerbaum. A not to miss read is the Next Generation about V&W

Equestrian who are conquering the showjumping world with unparalleled

strings of winnings. Our locals Van Asten-Nyberg Equestrian told us their

inspiring story and we gladly highlight on of our partners: the family

business Hotel van der Valk in Venlo.

Last but not least, I would like to mention our HX Highlight of the Year:

Lambada Shake AG. A top stallion produced by our team that caught so

much attention that we had to let him go and continue his career with

a new rider. We are very excited to follow the next steps of his career.

We wish you happy reading and hope to see you at one of our events

in 2025.

Heroes of our Time

Ludger

Beerbaum

by chance, a cattle dealer my father often worked with knew

Hermann personally. Through him, I was able to join the clinic. I

was riding at 1.20m level and had never been taught how to ride

distances properly, so it was a real eye-opener when Hermann

taught me that. Somehow, after those ten days, Hermann saw

potential in me and invited me to work for him during the summer

holidays. That became a routine every holiday, and later, he also

introduced me to Paul Schockemöhle.” While Ludger’s parents

were supportive, they still didn’t see a future in horses. “My

parents always encouraged me to finish university rather than

throwing money away on a horse hobby, so I had to be smart

about it with them. I proposed taking one term off university to

prove I could earn a living as a rider. If I failed, I promised to

return to my economics studies.” Although his parents weren’t

entirely thrilled, returning to the classroom after that period was

no longer an option for Ludger.

“My parents did not envision

that me & my brother would

forge a career in the horse

industry”

Same passion

That his seven-years-younger brother Markus would eventually

choose the same profession was far from a given. “Markus got

up to some mischief at school, and as punishment, my father

made him muck out the stables on our farm from 6 am to 6 pm.

That wasn’t exactly pleasant for Markus, especially since he

also had an allergy to hay and straw. Still, his interest in horses

started to grow, and to my parents’ great dismay, he ultimately

decided to become a professional showjumper as well, instead

of taking over the family farm.” The brothers worked together

for a few years at the stables in Munich, but after Markus met

Meredith Michaels, he decided to forge his own path. Ludger’s

first successes came early in his career, starting in the Junior

and Young Rider championships. In 1981, he became vicechampion

at the Junior level, and a year later, he secured silver

among the Young Riders. By 1984, he was already earning his

first international medals. These achievements seamlessly

transitioned into a remarkable senior career. The list of Ludger

Beerbaum’s exceptional accomplishments and the iconic horses

that contributed to them would be too lengthy to fit into any

magazine. It’s safe to say that Ludger had an illustrious career.

Over the span of 28 years, he competed in five Olympic Games,

winning four gold and one bronze medal. He also became a twotime

world champion with the German team in 1994 and 1998 and

In our sport, we have heroes and superheroes. Ludger Beerbaum definitely belongs to the latter category.

After an almost fifty-year-long sporting career filled with unprecedented successes, the most accomplished

showjumper of all time retired from competition last year. Alongside his sporting achievements, he established

himself as an exceptional entrepreneur and trainer. This year, he celebrated remarkable success as Christian

Kukuk, affiliated with his stable since 2012, claimed Olympic individual gold.

It’ is almost hard to imagine, but as a young boy, farmer’s son

Ludger Beerbaum was more interested in football than horses.

In fact, he admits he was actually a bit afraid of them. “On our

farm, we worked with horses, and we had donkeys, cows, and

pigs. A pony wasn’t on my wish list at all, and when my parents

got me one, it bit me. So, it didn’t stay around for long,” Ludger

recalls, reflecting on the early days of his journey.

First ribbons

Through a friend, Ludger decided to give horseback riding a try

at the local riding club. After winning his first ribbon at the age of

12, his motivation began to grow. “But it would be a fairytale to

say I knew back then that this would become my true passion,”

Ludger explains. The turning point came when he was around

15 and had the chance to attend a ten-day clinic with national

coach Hermann Schridde. “I couldn’t get an official invitation, but

claimed four team gold medals at the European Championships.

In the office at Riesenbeck, trophy cabinets serve as a testament

to some of the exceptional achievements of Ludger Beerbaum,

who was named Rider of the Year multiple times. Ludger can no

longer ask his parents, but he doubts whether they were truly

proud of his achievements. “They were supportive, but I think

deep down they always would have preferred if I had chosen a

proper job instead of the ‘gypsy lifestyle’ as a rider.”

More than riding

One of Ludger’s most cherished achievements is the gold

medal he won at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona,

riding the phenomenal Classic Touch. “The successes have

been incredible, but they’ve always come with their share of

challenges: disappointments, setbacks, and injuries. In the end,

you learn the most from those moments.

What I’m most proud of is that I’ve managed to earn a living as a

rider. I’ve been able to bring the right people into my circle, like

Madeleine Winter-Schulze, who has supported me since 1994

and feels like family. She has been a key factor in my career,

providing the financial support to not only sustain my own horses

but also keep a few for my riders.”

One of the finest examples of this is, of course, Checker 47, with

whom Christian Kukuk won individual gold in Paris. “I’ve always

strived to work with horses as efficiently as possible. That’s a

mindset I’ve had since my upbringing as a farmer’s son. When

you own cows, you do everything you can to ensure their milk

production is as high as possible. Proper care is essential for

that. The same principle applies to horses. My goal has always

been to do everything necessary to help horses reach their full

potential and increase their value. I’ve always worked with the

utmost respect for horses. Nowadays, there’s a lot of discussion

about horse welfare, and it’s good that this topic has gained

awareness. It’s our responsibility as riders to explain why we do

what we do and how we do it. But we also need to be honest:

everyone makes mistakes, and I am no exception. That’s why it’s

so important to regularly reflect on what we do. Fortunately, a lot

has improved over the years. When I first started with horses, they

were standing in stands day and night. It’s hard to imagine that

now! Working with horses can be incredibly beneficial because

they have so much to offer our society, especially in the digital

world we live in today. It requires a unique bond between rider

and horse. And the fact that our sport allows men and women to

compete on equal footing makes it even more attractive.”

Commitment

An illustrious list of top riders has learned the ropes at Ludger’s

stable. Just to name a few: Marco Kutscher, Christian Kukuk,

Henrik von Eckermann, Philipp Weishaupt, Richard Vogel. “I’ve

been very lucky with the riders here. It’s always a matter of give

and take, and in a good partnership, both parties benefit. It’s

not so much that I’m constantly in the arena giving instructions,

but rather that the riders here can learn a lot by keeping their

eyes and ears open. We learn from each other, and we work

here with the same goal in mind. In our sport, talent is not the

most important thing: commitment and focus definitely are. If

you look at the current top ten riders, you’ll see how different

their riding styles are, yet they all prove to be very successful

with different horses. The same goes for the horses, I’ve ridden

many different ones, and it’s their intrinsic qualities that make the

difference. Coping with pressure is a huge challenge for both

rider and horse in our sport.” One of the riders who has also

learned a lot about Ludger’s training and management is Michel

Hendrix. About fifteen years ago, he went to Riesenbeck. “From

day one, I had a very good chemistry with Emile Hendrix. We

share the same values and, of course, we have often competed

against each other. To this day, we still regularly ask each other

for our opinions, and it was a natural decision for me to have his

nephew Michel come here to learn. Michel stayed for about a

year and a half, and he still keeps close contact with the riders

who were here.”

“The people in your circle

make all the difference”

Succession

The business in Riesenbeck has grown steadily over the

years, as have Ludger's activities as a top entrepreneur. How

everything will continue in the future is not entirely clear yet.

“My son Alexander is indirectly involved in the horse industry

through his work for ClipMyHorse, and my 16- and 14-year-old

daughters Cecilia Sophia and Mathilde are performing well as

riders in the junior classes. Of course, I can’t wait to see what the

future brings for them, but I don’t want to push them too much.

In about ten years, I envision myself playing a more advisory

role and handing over the leadership of the business to others

when the time is right. I believe that in the next decade, my role

will evolve into one where I can help with strategic decisions

but leave the hands-on management to others. And of course, I

will continue to enjoy the horses and the equestrian sport every

day”, concludes Ludger.

In November 2024, Lambada Shake AG moved from Stal Hendrix to his new owner, Cian O’Connor. The

eight-year-old talent made an impressive international debut at 1.50m level this past summer, turning

heads across the sport. For five years, the Aganix du Seigneur son served as a remarkable showcase for Stal

Hendrix and co-owners Jan van Meever and the Lammers family. It’s the perfect time to look back on the

beginning of his illustrious career.

Lambada Shake AG was born on the 1st of May 2016 in the

stables of local passionate breeder Alex Gisbertz, who gave him

the name Alabama Shake AG Z. He was sold by his breeder to

stallion owner Jan van Meever. Two years later, Jan presented

him during the first-round viewing of the KWPN Stallion Show,

where he immediately made an impression.

Promising start

During the KWPN Stallion Show two months later, he caught

the eye of Paul Hendrix and others. Joy Lammers had already

shown interest in the stallion, and after brief deliberation, Jan

Highlights

continues to raise the bar

van Meever decided to sell part of the stallion to Stal Hendrix

and part to the Lammers family. Until the middle of November,

Lambada remained under the shared ownership of these three

parties. The son of Aganix du Seigneur was selected for the

performance test and participated at the end of 2019. There,

he showcased exceptional talent, which was rewarded with

remarkably high marks and an impressive score of 90 points.

It proved to be the first success in a series of many. With Tim

van den Oetelaar in the saddle he received the highest marks

in the final of the Dutch Championship for four-year-olds, but a

time penalty prevented him from winning. He then continued

to impress year after year in the stallion competitions. Under

the guidance of Pieter Keunen, this exceptional talent was

developed to international 1.45m level, with highlights including

a victory in the VHO Trophy at 1.40m level during the KWPN

Stallion Show earlier this year.

League of his own

Michel Hendrix smiles when the main character of this story is

mentioned. “Lambada came to the stable here as a four-year-old

and has been very special from the start. The good feeling we all

had right from the beginning has only grown. Pieter rode him for

a long time and did a great job. This spring, Giampiero Garofalo

joined our team, and with this change of rider, we were able to

give Lambada more opportunities at international competitions.

That’s when we started entering a different level of shows, and

every time it was confirmed just how exceptional Lambada

truly is. Time and time again, he stood out among horses of his

age", says Michel Hendrix. The duo has delivered a series of

highly promising performances, debuting at 1.50m level at the

CSIO5* in Dublin and continuing to impress in the Sunshine

Tour, which only amplified interest in the stallion. “Whether it

was the competition in Dublin, Eindhoven, or the Sunshine Tour:

Lambada was never impressed by any of it and always gave his

best in the arena. How easily he jumped those courses made

us realize once again what a super talent we were dealing with.

We really had a long-term plan with Lambada Shake and were

already looking ahead to the big championships in the future.

Next year, he could start competing in his first Grand Prix.”

“How easily he jumped those

courses made us realize what a

super talent we were dealing with”

Karlswood

But it didn’t come to that. Following immense demand, his

owners decided to finalize the sale. “Lambada Shake wasn’t

originally for sale, and over the years, we’ve had to turn down

numerous offers. Ultimately, it became almost impossible to

justify keeping him, as the demand was very high", Paul Hendrix

shared. “As owners, we sat down together and decided to give

Cian O’Connor a chance. It is definitely a huge loss for our

breeding station and sport stable, but we have great confidence

that Lambada Shake AG will make an even greater impact in

the years to come.” It is the intention for Cian O’Connor to ride

the stallion himself, shares Michel Hendrix. “Of course, we will

continue to follow Lambada closely and can’t wait to see what

the future holds for him.”

Breeding legacy

Lambada Shake AG’s first crop of foals was born in 2021, and from

that inaugural generation, two sons were immediately selected

for the KWPN performance test and son Raas R being crowned

AES champion in Poland. “His initial offspring exhibit tremendous

promise. They possess athletic conformation and outstanding

jumping ability. Last year, Lambada Shake remained available

for fresh breeding for a few months at our station, so there are

more foals expected next year. We are proud to have been part

of the foundation of his brilliant future, and for us, it is definitely

not a closed chapter. Because who knows, perhaps one of his

offspring will someday follow in his footsteps,” concludes Paul

Hendrix.

The Next Generation

V&W EQUESTRIAN

“Together we can achieve

much more than we would

achieve just on our own”

T

here are not enough pages in this magazine to describe the magnificent

rise of V&W Equestrian. The business founded by Richard Vogel and

David Will has gone from strength to strength. With the two gentlemen

and rider Sophie Hinners climbing the ranks with dazzling speed and earning

winning titles nearly every show, there is no denying this partnership is one

of the most successful of its generation. Considering these three musketeers

are still relatively young, there seems to be no limit to what they can achieve.

We asked these German equestrians about their collaboration as a team, about lessons learned,

their most memorable achievements and what lies ahead.

The success of V&W Equestrian is undeniable, and your achievements continue to make

headlines. How do you look back on the past years and what have you learned from it.

“Since we founded V&W Equestrian, we’ve had some very good years. I think it's good and maybe

even important to dream big. You shouldn’t be afraid, however if you have big goals you need

to split them up into smaller ones, so you have small steps that you can achieve. A ladder with

small steps is easier to climb up than with big steps. And then obviously it's very important to

surround yourself with good people. We are all young, motivated and we have a good team spirit.

So together for sure we can achieve much, much more than we would achieve just on our own",

Richard begins. "In general, we're very proud that next to our career inside the ring we also do a

good job business-wise. We grew quite a bit. We have a super team of employees, and I think that

is fundamental to further success. I think I can speak for David and Sophie as well when I say that

we're very proud of our team and string of horses that we have in our stable."

David continues: " We have grown a lot and have been able to get together a successful team, in

front and behind the scenes. The past years have been very rewarding. Not everything went 100%

as planned, but in general, we've all worked very hard together to achieve our goals and reached

quite a lot of them. We've even exceeded our own expectations a bit. And personally, I find it more

rewarding to reach it as a team then if you just do it on your own. This business and the equestrian

world have so many different facets. That it's not only going in the ring and riding a big round.

It is also working together with students, planning, organization, it is never boring. Every day is

different, and you always learn new things."

Sophie continues: “I am very grateful for how everything has worked out. I think it was very good

for me to work at Stal Hendrix in the early days of my career. I gained so much experience there.

For example, they taught me how to handle the pressure to do well. Emile and Tim were super nice

to work for because they are real horse people and they know when something goes wrong in

the arena, you don't do it on purpose. It can happen to anyone in this sport, and they know exactly

how it feels and how hard you will work to do better next time."

14 | The next generation

The next generation | 15

I always knew one day I would go back to Germany. Richi and I

kind of lived through everything together and it was our dream to

one day work together. David and Richi began V&W Equestrian,

and I joined them after three years or so. I never really expected

that all three of us could be on the top level in the sport at the

same time. I am the kind of rider that is happy at any level to be

honest. I enjoy riding young horses and developing them, but

also at international level I am getting so many opportunities. I

am really, really happy with how things have evolved.”

the business side of things. After working together for so many

years, and with Sophie also joining us later on, our visions for our

company and the sport, are now very much aligned.”

Sophie adds: “ The dynamic between us all is a big pro too. We

train together and bounce ideas of each other and so on. We

are a team, both in the stables and in competition. At shows

you don’t just want to win, you also want the others to do well,

because then the team does well. I'm always happy when at least

one of us ends up on the

podium or gets a top ranking.

For example, if Richi or David

are also riding the jump-off,

it is even more motivating to

try to go faster than the other

team members. There is very

healthy sense of competition

between all of us.”

Can you name some of the

people that have played an

important role in the past

years and have helped you

to where you are today?

Lennert spoke a lot about it and after my apprenticeship with

Hergen Forkert I was very lucky to take Emile Hendrix up on

his offer to come and work for Stal Hendrix. Their influence has

been instrumental to my career. Thanks to them I could really

step up my international sports career, before I rode mostly

national shows. I was very lucky to get the ride on Vittorio right

in the beginning. I jumped my first two-star, three-star, fourstar

and five-star Grand Prix with him. And later on also my first

Nations Cup, which we won with the German team. This horse

has been very special for me.

The past year I have also been very fortunate to have been

asked to join the Iron Dames team for the Global Champions

League. Because V&W is a trading stable, I was not sure if I could

be a regular part of the team, because the horses will get sold at

some point. Luckily the owner of the Iron Dames team, Deborah

Mayer, saved one of my top horses, Singclair for me. So, I had

the chance to keep riding him the whole season. Deborah is

also a very inspiring person for sure. The real gamechanger is

when I got to take over the reins of My Prince. Richi and David

had both competed successfully with him before and I needed a

second horse for the Globals next to Singclair. We spoke about

it and figured why would we go and search for a horse, while

we have a fantastic horse that we know inside out in our stable."

V&W Equestrian is a partnership between friends. Working

together and in the case of Sophie and Richard as a couple

sounds great. What are the pros and cons to that?

“I am convinced that there are much more pros than cons”, says

Richard. “We are three people that are very close to each other.

We are very different from each other actually, but that makes the

team more complete and almost makes us work better together.

A big pro is that we can trust each other 100%. I think that is

very important for a business relationship like this. Otherwise, for

sure, it wouldn't function. The only con I can think about is the

challenge of working with your partner, when you have different

opinions that this doesn't translate into the private relationship.

It's not that we fight all day, every day obviously, but we have to

learn to keep a good balance there.”

David: “I’ve never wanted to work on my own. I always knew if

I would start a business, I wanted to partner up with someone.

That it would be Richi wasn’t evident, it took some convincing

before he was in. I’d know him from a young age, and I believed

we would work well together. I think I recognized early on that

Richi was not just a very talented rider but also very keen on

"I am very lucky to have been

surrounded by good people

that had a good influence on

me all my life", Richard says.

Some of them well-known,

like Hugo Simon, but also

others that do not have a big name in the sport, like Stefan

Schäfer, he has been a very important person for me. When

I was 15, he was the person I owned my first horse together

with and since then we've had a very close relationship. We talk

on the phone mostly every day, and he has always had good

tips or good advice for me in certain stages in my life. Another

important person is my uncle, he's one of my very first trainers.

My mom taught me first but then my uncle took over. So, the way

I ride and my style of riding I mostly have my uncle to thank for.

He's had a huge influence on me in that way and also a person

that gives me inspiration.

Another very important group of people is the Herbert family;

they are the people I started my first job with when I was 17 and

they quickly became kind of my second family. We always own

multiple horses together and they are only 20 minutes from our

base in Pfungstadt, so we see each other almost every week."

"Foremost my family was very influential. My mum has always

been very supportive but the idea to go into horses was fueled

thanks to my mother’s twin-sister who worked with horses and

her son and my nephew Lennert Hauschild. As kids me and

Davids adds: "Yes, now you hear the readers thinking, poor

David but that is really not the case. It is a win-win situation.

In the end My Prince would've been sold anyway, so now we

get to enjoy him from a team perspective. With Sophie earning

the rider of the GCL season title and the Cannes Stars team,

powered by the Iron Dames, becoming the first all-female team

to win the GCL Championship, I say all's well that ends well."

"My parents were very influential in my career for sure. They

gave me the best example of working hard to get to where you

want to be. They gave me the best foundation I could ask for. In

my younger years, which were much earlier than the other, since

I am almost a decade older than Sophie and Richi, I worked for

Dietmar Gugler. By coincidence his stable is where Sophie has

her horses stabled now, because the stable in Marburg is not

big enough for all the horses. I also got to know Richi better

when I worked for Dietmar, because Richi's uncle rode horses

for a client there. Next to this, I am also fortunate to have the

support of the Saudi team of which I am the chef équipe. I've

really enjoyed being a part of their journey, the way they've

evolved as riders and horsemen. Together we've achieved quite

a few special milestones."

At Hendriks we love beautiful equestrian landscapes. That is why we develop equestrian property with the finest and

highest quality designs and materials. Everything we add to our projects emphasizes the most beautiful sides of your

terrain, while at the same time facilitating land users and horses in the daily routine. Hendriks supplies equestrian

landscaping design, property development and property maintenance for large and smaller equestrian projects.

What’s up next? What are you, ‘the next generation’ aiming for?

"There have been many months now where we've been the only

stable in the world with three riders in the top 100 of the world

ranking list. I'd say the next goal would be to have all of us in the

top 50. At this moment Sophie and I are in the top 70 and Richi is

in the top 10, so it seems like a good goal to aim for. I'm not quite

sure if all of us are going to aim for the next Olympics in LA, it

more depends on the horses and their health. But that is a long

way away, for now there are lots of competitions to work towards

and to see what the future brings", says David.

Richi continues: "For the long term, I feel this generation can

bring more focus to the welfare of the horse also to an outsider

perspective. Especially in relation to us riders being able to

compete all over the world for decades more to come. I think

we have a very important job to show the world and non-horse

people how amazing it is to work with horses, how well they are

cared for, and how much the horses enjoy the connection with us

and share the drive to perform and work together. The bond we

have with these animals is so special and we need to preserve

that. For the short term, one of our personal challenges or goals

we're aiming for is to share a property as a team together and

are looking into the options of building a stable. So that's going

to be exciting in the next three to five years. There is for sure a

lot of work and a lot of planning to do. But we're motivated and

we're happily looking into the future."

Richard Vogel's most memorable achievements

"For sure it wasn't a result that we wanted to achieve but the

Olympics were a very special experience. As I said not super

successful, but I'm convinced sometimes out of those experiences

you learn more than out of wins and other successes. Then for

sure the Rolex Grand Prix in Geneva was something special one

year ago and in general we had some very nice wins. Such as

winning the Nations Cup final in Barcelona for the second time,

that was a super feeling. We had some very nice wins the first

5-star in Stuttgart in front of my home crowd which was very

special. We're lucky that we had quite a bit of success."

What did you want to be when you were little?

Sophie always wanted to work with animals

and aspired to be a veterinarian when she was

younger. "Luckily I realized early on that if you go

to university to study to be a vet, there is very little

time for riding next to that". Even though my mother

wanted me to have a plan B, it is plan A that has

luckily worked out quite well." RIchard was inspired

by both his granddads. "Both of them were farmers.

One of them had pigs, the other had pigs and cows.

It was always fun for me to be around and to help

them at the farm when I was little." David on the

other hand had no dreams of any other career than

with horses. "My parents own a horse farm, I did

not know anything else. I was also already very

competitive back then, so being a showjumper

seemed like a good fit. In school I was also not

quite a genius. Or maybe I was, because my efforts

were very small and I still managed to get through

it", David smiles.

David Will's most memorable achievements

"Winning the Grand Prix of Den Bosch in 2013 is one of my best

memories. Also, it's maybe not one of the most famous wins,

and the show doesn't exist anymore, but I won the Grand Prix

in Munich Indoors twice. It doesn't have to be a big win to be

good. I am from the area there so to share that with friends &

family was great. Also winning the First Nations Cup for Germany

and the silver team medal at the 2021 European Championships

in Riesenbeck are special. Also coaching the Saudi team to

victories, they are all great memories.”

Sophie Hinners's most memorable achievements

"Recently winning the 5* Grand Prix in Verona with Iron

Dames My Prince was so special. It was my first 5*-Grand

Prix victory at a World Cup event no less. The whole year

was very memorable. With my first full 5* season, first

time in the GCL with a fantastic team that won the overall

ranking and me earning the GCT rider of the year title."

Stallions

Cape Coral RBF Z

Over the years, Cape Coral RBF Z has developed into a

cornerstone of Stal Hendrix’s stallion breeding program. His

qualities, achievements, and lineage ensured that breeders have

made excellent use of him. And now, his progeny consistently

exceeds the highest expectations.

Something special

Cape Coral RBF Z was bred by Marcel and Maryelle Coenen from

Roggel, just a short distance from Stal Hendrix. “We purchased

his dam, Gerona PP, as a foal in Belgium and later she competed

in sport with Mans Buurman at 1.40m level. Gerona was a beautiful

mare with excellent jumping ability. We intentionally kept her

for breeding”, tells Marcel Coenen. In 2009, Cape Coral RBF Z

became her first foal. “At the time, we spent quite a bit of time in

Germany and had a good feeling about Cornet Obolensky. So, I

personally drove to Fritz Ligges’s stud, where he was stabled at

the time, and thankfully, Gerona was in foal right away. As a foal,

Cape Coral immediately stood out. Watching him leap over a

puddle of water in the pasture gave me the impression he could

become something special. My son trained him when he was a

young horse, and he began catch people’s attention even more

when Mans Buurman took over the reins. At one point, I spoke

to Paul Hendrix at the stallion approval in Holstein, and not long

after, he came to see Cape Coral together with his son Michel.”

Michel remembers it vividly: “Cape Coral had already built quite

a reputation in our area, and when I tried him, he gave me an

excellent feeling right away. He’s a big horse with a very good

canter and tremendous scope. Although he was still a bit green

for his age, the potential was undeniable.” The deal was sealed,

and Cape Coral RBF Z went on to perform with Pieter Keunen.

Coral receiving recognition from a prestigious studbook like the

KWPN. He has consistently ranked high in breeding values, and

I dare say he is developing into one of the best sons of Cornet

Obolensky in breeding,” says Paul Hendrix. “Cape Coral’s

offspring possess great scope, are easy to ride, and jump with

excellent technique. They’ve found their way into the stables of

top riders, so we can expect a lot from them in the coming years.”

Flagship

The story of Cape Coral RBF Z is a real success story for

everyone involved. Breeder Marcel Coenen beams with pride

when he talks about the stallion: “For our breeding program, he

has been an outstanding flagship, and I’m thrilled that he has

stayed so close to home, allowing us to follow his journey so

closely. Paul’s enthusiasm is also something that makes us, as

breeders, incredibly proud.” Cape Coral RBF Z owes his name to

the city of Cape Coral in Florida, which Marcel once visited, and

to the initials of his three children. “RBF stands for our children

Robin, Bram, and Freek. Our other breeding products also carry

the same suffix. I’m happy that he has always kept that name

because it has brought the best recognition to our breeding.”

If there is one stallion in which Paul Hendrix has always placed unwavering trust, it is Cape Coral RBF Z.

Nearly a decade after acquiring this magnificent son of Cornet Obolensky, it is clear that this trust was

more than well-founded. Under Pieter Keunen, he has proven himself in sport at 1.50m level and continues

to affirm his worth as a sire. This has led not only to a string of exceptionally promising offspring but also

to his recent prestigious approval by the KWPN studbook.

Text: Jenneke Smit

Offspring

Before being sold to Stal Hendrix, Cape Coral RBF Z was

already approved by the AES and his breeder used him for two

of his mares. The in 2015 born Celine RBF Z (ds.Corofino I) has

competed successfully at international 1.45m level with Aurelia

Loser and Jane Richard, while Celeste RBF Z (ds.Cassini I) is

performing at 1.40m level with Red Morgan. His first significant

crop was born in 2016, producing standouts such as La Luna

Especiale, Constantin Z, Laguna HX, Lugano, and Limited

Edition HX, all competing at 1.45m level. Cape Coral RBF Z

himself reached international 1.50m level with Pieter Keunen,

including a clear round in the Sires of the World competition

in 2018. Later, Michel Hendrix also competed with him for a

few months. Today, Cape Coral is represented in national and

international competitions by an impressive roster of offspring.

Among them is his first approved son, No Mercy (see sidebar),

as well as the KWPN-approved stallion Opus One JDV (ds.

Cardento), who was premium awarded as a three-year-old at

the KWPN Stallion Show and is now being further developed

by French rider Christophe Grangier. Thanks to his promising

start as a sire and his own achievements, Cape Coral RBF Z was

approved by the KWPN earlier this year. “It’s great to see Cape

No Mercy, a star in the making

One of Cape Coral RBF Z’s standout offspring is the

KWPN-approved stallion No Mercy. Bred in 2018 by Hans

Vrijvogel from Den Bosch, this promising young stallion is

being developed by Tom Martens and has been stabled

with Vincent Voorn since he was three years old. As the

first son of Cape Coral RBF Z to receive KWPN approval,

No Mercy earned excellent marks as a three-year-old.

Following successful performances in stallion competitions

and young horse classes, he made his international debut

this past summer. At the international shows in Wuustwezel

and the WBFSH Studbooks Jumping Global Champions

Trophy in Valkenswaard, No Mercy delivered clear rounds

every time. His stellar performances helped earn him the

KWPN’s silver medal in the six-year-old category. According

to his rider, the stallion has an outstanding work ethic and

a dream to ride. Qualities that will take this rising star to

great heights.

New Developments

Four Aces is a hidden gem

ready to shine

Holding all the cards

Four Aces is the international name of the property in Kessel. The Dutch name is ‘Sjöppe Aos’ but with the pronunciation

being a challenge even for those who do not speak the local Limburg dialect, it was renamed. Befittingly the name Four

Aces (in a game of poker) means holding all the good cards and having a strong advantage. With the location of the property

and its developers, it is safe to say the name fits the lot.

Stal Hendrix is diversifying its portfolio and venturing further into the world of property development.

With the realization of Michels farm in Kessel a great success, a taste for developing equestrian farms grew

and it has become part of the company’s strategic plan. The latest addition to the family’s portfolio is a

property literally down the street and it is a hidden gem, waiting to be revamped into a state-of-the-art

equestrian facility.

The equestrian heart of Limburg is blessed with many stables,

horse farms and show venues. Horse sports play a big role in

the economy and attracting equestrians from far and wide to the

Limburg area has been ongoing for decades. The Hendrix family

has longstanding partnerships with quite a few international

riders and their teams that have settled in the Netherlands.

For example, showjumping couple Henrik von Eckermann and

Janika Sprunger, who reside alongside the same street where

the Four Aces property lies.

Idyllic spot

“We knew this property was coming on the market and we took

our chances”, Michel begins to explain. “It is a 6-hectare plot, also

on the Keizersbaan, that currently has an existing horse facility

on it. It has been around for a while and used to be the home

of several riders including Sergio Moya. It really is a beautiful

spot, very private and surrounded by greenery, trees while also

offering a great view of the countryside.”

“The plot is literally down the

street from my stables & across

the road from our stud farm”

Modernizing

“Over the years it has become a bit outdated and that is why the

plans are drawn up in such a way that we will rebuild the stable

area from the ground up. Only the residential farm will remain”,

Michel continues. “We’ve really enjoyed drawing up the plans

and streamlining them to eventually create a modern facility with

all the comforts to function a professional stable.”

The farm is designed to have 25 stalls, spacious grooming area,

an indoor arena (25x60 meters), an outdoor arena (50x90), a

In the midst of it all

Like with al building projects, patience is key. “Starting 2025 we

are hoping to begin the realization of Four Aces. It will be an

exciting project that is centered near so many top showjumping

stables and training/show venues. It is a great opportunity

for anyone who wants to settle in the midst of it all. The new

buyers or renters will have a state-of-the-art accommodation at

worked together before with advisors that know what running a

stable requires on a day-to-day basis. It will be a beautiful farm

JPM International celebrates

teamwork and top sport

With the second edition of JPM International not blessed with great

weather, everyone pulled together to get the show on the road. And

thanks to the excellent footing of the arenas at CSI3* event in Kessel,

the show could go on. Other inconveniences caused by the rain got

solved with swift thinking and determination. Two qualities that the

winner of the Grand Prix also possesses. 18-year-old Con Quidam

added another marvelous winning title to his name, earning his

rider Sanne Thijssen her second top-tier victory in Kessel.

“There is always something to learn and to improve going from an inaugural 1st edition

to the second”, Janou Hendrix tell us. “This year we aimed on crossing the t’s and

dotting the i’s when it comes to all the facilities. And in comparison with 2023 there

was no entry fee to the showgrounds. This made the event more accessible to local

families and for example tourists. Enjoying the show for us does not only mean hosting

top sport but also being able to share the excitement with lots of others. Especially on

Sunday we succeeded in this, and we had a full house for the Grand Prix."

It's the little things

However, the success of the event is not just measured in numbers. The organization

made everyone working at and competing in the show feel especially welcome

too. “I’m not sure where to begin”, one of the foreign riders admits. “We’ve

received branded chocolates and a handy thermos, plus fresh strawberries and

that just for the humans. I saw my groom smiling when he pulled open the rug

sack he got at the show office, so I am on my way to see which goodies he’s got.”

Qualified on Kessel soil

The warm-up and show arena footing is meticulously maintained by LHK Projects.

The company that is co-owned by Michel Hendrix knows their stuff and the LHK-crew

is fully geared towards maintaining the best footing during the show. Known for their

efficiency, the crew seems undeterred by the weather forecast. This is when the

technique behind their eb-and-flow system gets to shine. With the CSIO5* in Sankt

Gallen having turned into a water ballet, JPM International even offered Dutchman

Willem Greve and his mount Grandorado TN the opportunity to qualify on Kessel soil

for the Olympic Games in Paris.

Business to business

The program is also focused on inspiring and bringing local entrepreneurs together.

Between a business breakfast meeting and a business night, entrepreneurs from the

area got to connect and were treated to rare insights to world of showjumping thanks

to the speakers of the evening: top course-builder Louis Konickx and Olympic gold

medalist and trainer Jeroen Dubbeldam.

Orange party

Riders from all over the world and their horses showed their skills. And several foreign

riders topped the rankings, among which Saudi native Khaled Al-Mobty, who trains

with Tim and Emile Hendrix. With his mount Diana du Plevau Z he won the Neptunus

Structures GP-Qualifier. The victories in the other two main classes of the show

remained in the Netherlands, in Limburg to be precise. Dutch rider Sanne Thijssen

claimed both wins. She started her winning streak with 10-year-old Cum Laude in the

Kuypers Kessel Masters class. Just keeping HX-rider Giampiero Garofalo (ITA) and

Kyra from the top of the podium.

Getting creative

“I love the Masters show class. You can get a bit creative”, Sanne smiles. “The

atmosphere on Saturday night is always great at this show. You feel that everyone is

ready to get the party started. Since I had the slowest horse out of everyone on the

start list, I did not aim for a win. Getting it, makes it even more special.” The aim of

the game was much different on Sunday when the local rider had to take on 8 other

combinations in the jump-off of the Stal Hendrix CSI3* Grand Prix. “If anyone could win

it, it was Con Quidam. But his qualities and my ability to regulate them do not always

match. Even after leaving the arena, I thought the time could be beat, but it couldn’t, so

that meant winning in front of a familiar crowd again, how special is that!”

DAVID TRUNDLEY

PAINTS HORSES IN

A DIFFERENT LIGHT

There is something magical about the artwork that

David Trundley creates. Whether or not you are a racing

enthusiast, the horses that flow from his paintbrush are

captured in such a light that it draws you in. This artist has a

gift for making ordinary equestrian scenes look extraordinary.

Therefor we shine a light on David Trundley's paintings in this

year's 'In Pictures' article.

At the honorable age of 75, David Trundley is still as sharp as the pencils he

uses to sketch. The softspoken and gentle Englishman vividly remembers the

days when he started painting and how he was able to craft a formidable career

out of his talent. "I do not come from a horsey family", the artist begins his story.

"I grew up in a town called March in Cambridgeshire, after which my parents

moved to Cambridge. This was fairly close to the well-known racecourse of

Newmarket and the area is fully geared towards horses, there are thoroughbred

stables everywhere."

"I left school having studied art at A-level. I just painted for fun. Firstly flowers,

but after a while anything that made a good subject. Then I came into contact

with horses, thanks to my brother-in-law. He encouraged me to join him at a

local riding school and I took some lessons. I was never going to be a top

jockey and so the adventure went from learning to ride horses to developing

a fascination watching them on the racetrack and painting them on a canvas."

'I did not bet, I got sold on racing instead'

The Newmarket racecourse setting intrigued David and he started visiting on a

regular basis. "This was still mostly during the holidays, in between my studies

at university to become a country planner. When I was 21, I went to my first

real meeting or race if you call it, named the '2000 Guineas Stakes'. It is a

flat race open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. That is when I

really got sold on it." Not the excitement of the races, the betting or the crowds

and atmosphere fueled David's fascination. It was the horses. "They were like

nothing I'd ever seen before. I made real efforts to learn how to paint them well

and grew to love them along the way."

This painting is from

David's favorite spot:

in between the trees

at the Chantilly forest.

From planner to painter

"In the early nineties my artwork was sold in small galleries in Somerset,

England. I worked as a planner and painted whenever I could. I didn't think my

art would be displayed in big cities like London one day or make it all the way

Life changing art

The Tryon gallery wanted to organize an exposition with just

my paintings. That was a huge deal, and I supplied the gallery

with 70 pieces, thinking maybe 10 or so would get sold. On

the opening night, my wife and I arrived a few hours after the

exhibition began and 50 pieces had already been sold. We were

blown away! It led to so many great experiences. For instance,

on that evening, we stepped out of the gallery to have a look at

the paintings on display in the window and we met an American

couple. We got chatting and it turned out they had also bought

a painting. They invited us to visit them in Philadelphia to see

the races at the Saratoga Race Course. What a time that was for

us", David reminisces.

Favorite spot

At Newmarket racecourse David met Andre Fabre, a highly

renowned French champion horse racing trainer. "Andre was a

very skilled horseman and I was lucky enough to visit his home

country and especially the racecourse in Chantilly. This became

my favorite spot to paint."

"I'd look forward to the early mornings in Chantilly, when the

horses would get their training in the forest. The light is so

beautiful there. Also, the sound of the hoofs when they gallop

on the soft floor of the forest is not as you'd expect to be loud,

it is almost mysteriously silent. It really is something special."

Irish milestones

Chantilly is only one of the racecourses that David frequently

visited. "It is even more beautiful than Newmarket, Royal Ascot

or the Punchestown racecourse in Kildare, Ireland. Although

each racecourse has its own appeal." In Ireland is where David

met Alan Redmond. "Alan owns a gallery near the racecourse.

We got along really well and still do. In the early days I painted a

winning horse at the Punchestown racecourse, ridden by Patrick

Mullens, son of Willie Mullins. That set another great friendship

in motion. The Mullins are very well-known champion trainers

in Ireland and the UK. Together with Willie and Alan we've had

some great fun over the years. I am thankful for the experiences

my paintings brought me and the wonderful people I've met

along the way".

Paintings by David Trundley

The artwork of David Trundley has found its

way all over the world. There are even a few of

his paintings that hang on the living room walls

of Emile and Paul Hendrix. David Trundley still

puts his brush to canvas and continues to work

together with Alan Redmond. His art gallery

proudly features and sells David's paintings. For

The 20th anniversary edition of the

Dutch Sport Horse Sales raises the roof

Anniversaries are there to be celebrated and that is exactly what the Dutch Sport Horse Sales did at the

20th edition of the auction. The first edition of the event was held well over two decades ago and has

been growing from strength to strength. Even though the amount of horses in the collection is now less in

The exceptionally talented Mr. Cornike was one of the

Meet the Locals

Van Asten-Nyberg Equestrian

The showjumping and training stable of Mathijs van Asten and Kristin Nyberg is located is just a

stone’s throw away from Stal Hendrix and has become one of the staple equestrian businesses in the

area over the years. Its owners are fully invested in the sport, the welfare of their horses, and building a

reputation as top professionals. The well-organized company continues to evolve, but the cornerstone

values remain the same. Doing hard honest work with respect and passion is what drives this venture.

“We are very fortunate

to have been able to

turn our hobbies into

our livelihood”

It all started with a horse and not just any horse. In the 2009 Hendrix in Kessel. “I lived in Paul and Saskia’s guest apartment

Asten decided to congratulate Kristin. “Mathijs and I had known Kristin. “She grew up in the city, my parents had a pig farm at

each other for years, but the Hendrix family

the exact venue where we have our stables

always takes the credit for playing a part

in us getting together", says Kristin with a

smile.

Determined entrepreneur

her parents supported her hobby. She

now.” Mathijs was born and raised in the

village of Ysselsteyn and together with his

older brother Leopold began riding ponies

at an early age. “I wasn’t too serious about

it in the beginning. I also enjoyed playing

soccer, but when I got selected to join the

“I wanted to forge a career for myself in the horse industry.”

Determined as she was, Kristin went on to successfully train,

show and sell horses, next to reselling equestrian goods. I also

coached students, that was already a passion of mine back then.

When I was 21 or 22 years old, I worked with Bo Kristoffersen and

Rolf-Göran Bengsston, that was a very educational time. I began

trading more horses and that’s how I got into contact with the

Hendrix family back then.

Early 2009 Kristin realized in order to advance her career she

would have to leave Sweden. Together with two of her students

she relocated to the Netherlands and rented 10 stables at Stal

attended to the pigs and the stalls early in the morning, before

packing the truck and heading off. I really enjoyed going to shows

as a family”, Mathijs recollects. Mathijs went on to win two gold

medals and a silver medal with the Dutch team at the European

Championships for Juniors and Young riders between 1996 and

1999. “I combined going to school with beginning my own horse

business in a separate part on the farm. After a few years my

parent knew neither me nor my brother had the ambition to take

over the pig farm and I was given the opportunity to expand the

business when my father sold the pigs in 2002. I was able to

take on more horses to trade and to ride for several owners.”

Step by step

Fast forward a few years and the couple began their company

Van Asten-Nyberg Equestrian. “I'd already started renovating

some of the barns. When Kristin joined, we continued to add

more modern elements to the stables. We’ve grown and evolved

step by step, but our company has remained relatively small.

This is a conscious choice. We want to be able to give the horses

and our clients the time and attention they deserve. We believe

in quality over quantity.”

A fine balance

“In any business clients but also employees come and go,

however we pride ourselves on having long lasting partnerships

and being good employers to our staff. Some of the people we

work with have been with us for ten years or more. Also, the

collaborations we have with our clients and the owners of some

of the horses are long-lasting. The joy they experience from us

caring well for their horses and the sport successes we achieve

with them, is what we work very hard for. The same goes for the

clients that we coach. It is a fine balance to combine schooling

horses with trading horses and competing at the highest level of

the sport while also coaching clients. It is something we are very

proud of. We’ve been able to turn our hobbies into our livelihood,

we are very fortunate really to have managed that together.”

Eye for detail

The stables of Van Asten-Nyberg Equestrian are always in tiptop

shape. We try to have the horses in the best shape possible

as well. One of the cornerstones of our business is that we take

great care of the training process of the horses. Starting with the

young ones and building them up gradually. We breed on a small

scale and also buy youngsters from other breeders or stables

when they are mostly 5 or 6 years old. But no matter how old

a horse is, the strategy you apply and the way you work with

them is what makes the difference. Having a hands-on approach

and communicating with the staff about them keeps you on top

of things. Everyone knows that with horses, there are ups and

downs, but at the moment we are very lucky to have a good

thing going.”

when we won the Nations Cup in Sopot, that was very special.

Sirocco has established himself at 5*-level and Cassina Dior

Special partnerships

For Mathijs it has always been his aim to continue to compete at

the highest level of the sport. “There have been periods when

we had to focus on building the business and the sport did not

take precedent. Kristin has always supported me by contributing

a lot when it comes to the coaching and day-to-day management

of the stable. Thanks to a fantastic partnership we’ve been able

to invest in two horses, Cassina Dior and Sirocco together with

the Backsell family. Sirocco has been part of many highlights this

summer. Winning the Wim van der Leegte CSI3* Grand Prix in

EIndhoven was amazing. He and I have also represented the

Dutch at several Nations Cups for example at CHIO Aachen. And

Next to top sport Mathijs and Kristin are also fortunate to coach

very motivated riders. Some for shorter and others for longer

periods of time. They originate from all over the world, such as

Canada and Qatar. “For example, we’ve been working together

with American rider Vani Khosla for a few years now. She has

been developing really well and is rising the ranks with several

horses. To be a part of her journey is very motivating. At the

moment we are very happy with the people we have around us

and are glad to be working with such a fantastic group. It makes

having a company that much more rewarding, to share the joys

of all the efforts and celebrate the successes together with likeminded

equestrians.”

Record-breaking 24th edition

of the Limburg Foal Auction

U Can Do It by Nature was the top seller of the evening.

International investors

During the 24th edition, the Aganix du Seigneur colt U Can Do

It by Nature claimed the highest price of €36,000. He was bred

by young breeders Stan and Daan Creemers and originates from

the famous Callas Sitte Z damline. Another offspring of Aganix du

Seigneur, Adore Vinio MB bred by Maarten Brands, achieved an

impressive price of €32,000 and was secured by an American

buyer. For €30,000, the Carthago filly C U Again S Z bred by

Nico Schulpen, and the Cornet Obolensky filly Uptown Girl D

bred by Jan Pen, were sold to buyers from the United States

and Turkey. Investors from Ireland, Finland, Canada, Germany,

and the United Kingdom also acquired foals in this edition of the

Limburg Foal Auction. “During the live auction, things started off

a bit slow, but in the second half, we saw many high-quality foals

achieving strong prices. We are thrilled with these results. Last

year’s auction seemed difficult to surpass, yet we have managed

to do so with a sense of pride. I’m particularly pleased that so

many top-level riders and high-level sport stables placed their

trust in this auction by purchasing one or more foals. This greatly

increases the likelihood that we will be hearing much more

about these foals in the future", said Paul Hendrix. “Meanwhile,

numerous horses sold in the past in the Limburg Foal Auction are

now performing at the highest levels worldwide, which serves as

the best advertisement a sales organization could wish for. It is

therefore fair to say that the Limburg Foal Auction is among the

best showjumping foal auctions in the Netherlands.”

Text: Jenneke Smit

The Limburg Foal Auction had a very successful 24th edition. In a time when such achievements are far

from guaranteed, this auction has once again set a new benchmark, breaking its record for the average

price. In the live auction, held at the Peelbergen Equestrian, nearly 80 foals were sold with an impressive

average of €11,550. This reinforces the Limburg Foal Auction’s reputation as the premier live auction of the

Netherlands.

Horse of the Year title for

Zodiak du Buisson Z

For years, it has been evident in the sport that the finest

showjumping horses originate from the Southeast of the

Netherlands and its surrounding regions. The 2024 collection

of the Limburg Foal Auction once again underlined that fact.

Breeding in this area is conducted at the highest level. This year,

with the aid of both proven and promising sires, breeders once

again succeeded in producing exceptionally interesting foals,

which were selected for the auction.

Key factors

The success of an auction is inextricably linked to two key

factors: the right network of buyers and a high-quality collection

of foals. Over the past decades, the Hendrix family has attracted

a growing base of international clients. Thanks to their consistent

delivery of high-quality horses and foals, and excellent aftersales

service, they enjoy a strong global reputation. Many of

these clients were not only present at the Dutch Sport Horse

Sales but also attended the Limburg Foal Auction the following

day. Additionally, new buyers were recruited during the World

Championships for Young Jumping Horses, held just days

before the auctions. This resulted in many international riders

and owners placing bids, both in person and by phone, during

the Limburg Foal Auction. This would not be possible without

offering the highest quality of foals. The collection is the result

of the trust breeders have placed in the Limburg Foal Auction

over the years. Year after year, this auction proves its value to

breeders, not only by supporting them in marketing their foals

but also by achieving truly excellent prices for the very best foals.

The pedigree of the foals boasts outstanding damlines, leaving

little to be desired. The Limburg Foal Auction offered foals out

of the direct damlines of top-level performers like Beauville Z,

Jaguar Mail, Emerald van ’t Ruytershof, Valentina van ’t Heike,

Vink Especiale, Sapphire, Glamour Girl, Verdi, Nelson van ‘t

Roosakker and Van Gogh.

Nothing speaks louder for a foal auction than

a horse that rises to Grand Prix glory. One

of the rising stars is Zodiak du Buisson Z,

auctioned in 2015. Bred by Gijs van de Mortel,

this son of Zirocco Blue VDL has made a strong

impression under Richard Howley, becoming

a stellar ambassador for the auction. During

the live auction, his achievements have been

rewarded with the title LVV Horse of the Year.

Zodiak du Buisson Z made an impressive

debut at international 1.60m level last year at

the age of eight. Under his Irish rider Richard

Howley, this talented gelding has delivered

several standout performances. Just days after

the auction, he won his first 5* Grand Prix in

Coapexpan.
