Scientists classify diamonds into two main “types” – type I and type II – based on the
presence or absence of nitrogen which can replace carbon atoms in a diamond’s atomic
structure. These two diamond types can be distinguished based on differences in their
chemical and physical properties. Type II diamonds contain little if any nitrogen and they
are subdivided into two groups (IIa and IIb) both of which are quite rare
(less than 2% of all gem diamonds).

DISCOVERING BALANCE AND BEYOND
The Journey of Natasha Reiss
and Beyond Body Wellness
BY: NICHOLE NAOUM
Nestled in the heart of La Jolla, Beyond
Body Wellness is not just a wellness
center; it is a reflection of its founder
Natasha Reiss’s lifelong pursuit of
healing, innovation, and community.
With 25 years as an acupuncturist
specializing in sports injuries,
Natasha’s path to founding this unique wellness hub was
deeply personal.
“I have been a
competitive swimmer
most of my life, and in
the last decade, I found
myself battling injuries
every other year,”
Natasha shares. Her
own quest for recovery
sparked a deep dive
into podcasts, research,
and exploration of
cutting-edge modalities.
This passion, paired
with serendipitous
opportunities like
meeting Dr. Guillermo
Castillo, the center’s
medical director, and
finding the perfect
location, led Natasha to
expand her practice into
a multidisciplinary space.
What sets The Beyond
Body Wellness apart is
its curated assembly of
innovative treatments
and technologies. From the EmSculpt Neo to the
HOCATT and CellGym, each offering is chosen not
only for its effectiveness but also for its alignment with
Natasha’s philosophy: efficiency, non-invasiveness,
and proven results. The center tailors individualized
plans for a diverse clientele, whether they are triathletes
seeking peak performance, professionals optimizing
recovery, or anyone striving to look and feel their best.
Beyond the treatments,
Natasha emphasizes
a holistic experience.
Clients can expect
on-time appointments,
expert practitioners,
and a welcoming
environment that
inspires healing and
growth.
Growing up in La Jolla,
Natasha’s connection
to the community runs
deep. She cherishes the
beauty of the ocean, the
vibrancy of its people,
and the support of
the local swimming
community. “I grew up
here, shop here, eat here,
train here, and want
to give back,” she says.
Her desire to contribute
extends beyond
providing wellness
services; it is about
fostering meaningful
18 JANUARY 2025 | GBSAN.COM
connections and enhancing the
lives of those around her.
The collaborative nature of Beyond
Body Wellness also fulfills a longstanding
dream for Natasha. For
decades, she envisioned working
alongside a multidisciplinary team,
merging diverse expertise to create
synergistic solutions for clients.
“I have always been fascinated by
taking seemingly unrelated things
and finding the bridge between
them,” Natasha reflects.
The journey to founding Beyond
Body Wellness was not without its
challenges. Personal injuries and
the disbanding of Team Elite, a
professional swim team Natasha
worked with, marked a turning
point. Yet, these setbacks led her
to discover new tools for healing
and a renewed sense of purpose.
By trying and personally benefiting
from each machine now offered at
the center, Natasha built a space
grounded in firsthand experience
and unwavering passion.
At its core, Beyond Body
Wellness is about empowering
individuals to be the best versions
of themselves. For Natasha, this
work is not just a profession but a
joy - a culmination of her love for
learning and creating a space that
inspires well-being.
From its state-of-the-art treatments
to its deep roots in community,
Beyond Body Wellness embodies
Natasha’s vision of health: a
dynamic, evolving journey of
optimizing body and mind, one
client at a time.

Celebration
SEASON OF
Sharing
During the holiday season, which
is traditionally filled with joy and
family gatherings, many families
served by the San Diego Regional
Center face overwhelming
financial challenges. Recognizing this,
Foundation for Developmental Disabilities
launched the Season of Sharing program, a
heartfelt initiative that significantly impacts
the lives of those in need. The event was
a tremendous success, and because of the
generous support, they were able to bring
joy and assistance to so many families at
the San Diego Regional Center this holiday
season including games, photo booth, tree
decorating and more.

que esto sucede es que la
Foundation for Developmental

Season of Sharing, una iniciativa
que impacta de manera
significativa en las vidas de los
más necesitados. El evento fue
un éxito tremendo y gracias a
la generosa colaboración de
muchas personas, pudieron

About San Diego
SHRIEKING AND SQUAWKING
About San Diego
BY KEN KRAMER
Did you
know
there
is a
name
for r a
group
of parrots? It is called a
pandemonium. There are
other names too, like a
flock or a company. But I
like pandemonium. It is perfectly descriptive. And if
you live in some beach communities of San Diego, you
know why. Every day at first light the pandemonium
takes wing. A joie de vivre celebration of sunrise that is
delightful or raucous depending on your disposition.
As far back as the 1930s
they have been a part
of the sights and sound
of Ocean Beach and
Point Loma. Numbering
anywhere from 100 to
350, they are Mexican
Red-headed Amazon
parrots from the Gulf
Coast of our southern
neighbor, and if you are
curious about how they got here, you are not alone.
“The parrots were probably brought here by people.
They did not fly here,” says Dr. Jeffrey Jenkins of
the Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital on Morena
Boulevard. One theory holds that they were pets
Did the wild parrots of Ocean Beach and Point
Loma originate at Lomaland Theosophical Center.
Ernie the Parrot lived for a time
among the trees in Ocean Beach.
50 JANUARY 2025 | GBSAN.COM
kept aboard tuna fishing boats and were released
once the vessels returned home to San Diego. It is
possible the great-great-great-great grand parrots
of the current pandemonium resided on the
grounds of Point Loma’s Theosophical Center 90
years ago. Another story surrounds an event that
may have happened in the 1960s where a woman
in Ocean Beach was supposedly caring for several
birds, and they were released when a fire broke
out. Or maybe the fire was at a pet store. It is all
very unclear.
Dr. Jenkins has spent years studying and
photographing the parrots of Ocean Beach. “They
nest in the date palms,” where food is immediately
available, “though they also love the fruit of carob
trees and eucalyptus berries.” Mostly indifferent to
people, they do not attack or carry human disease
and seem to have adapted splendidly to San Diego’s
less than tropical climate.
Wild parrots are celebrated in
Stained Glass at this home in OB.
It is not uncommon for injured parrots to
be taken to Dr. Jenkins. One, named Ernie,
is a spectacular specimen with beautiful
green and red feathers, who took so long
in recovery it was determined he could
no longer survive in the wild. So, Ernie
simply ended up living at the hospital
and, to all appearances, loves life there.
Another feathered friend nearby is named
Jerrick, who came from a separate flock that
circulates around El Cajon and East County.
But it is in Ocean Beach where the parrots
seem to have settled for the duration. Now,
when 10 or 20 of them approach, it is a
sound that can be heard for blocks, and
when they sail overhead to settle on a nearby
tree, it is an event. Truly, a pandemonium.
Dr. Jeffrey Jenkins has cared for
injured wild parrots in San Diego.

SHINING A LIGHT ON
Human Trafficking Prevention
January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a
time to shed light on an injustice that often thrives
in silence. Traffickers exploit individuals of all
ages and backgrounds, often using manipulation
and deceit to trap them in unsafe conditions. By
fostering awareness and taking action, we can
empower those impacted and prevent future harm.

communities
with the knowledge to
recognize trafficking and
offers those impacted the
tools to rebuild their lives.
One of these stories
belongs to Ana, a
17-year-old lured with
a student visa under
the false promise of attending a boarding school. Ana
found herself in a labor trafficking situation, forced
into grueling tasks and prevented from leaving. Despite
these circumstances, Ana’s resilience guided her to
Project LIFE. With their support, she began her senior
year of high school focusing on graduating and creating
healthy relationships with her peers. Over time, Ana

In San Diego, trafficking is more prevalent than many
realize. Our region ranks thirteenth in the nation
for trafficking, representing $810 million in criminal
activity annually, highlighting the urgency of prevention
efforts.

concientización y tomar acción podemos empoderar a aquellas personas afectadas
difusión del proyecto LIFE. “Luchamos por ayudar
a las personas a transitar su camino hacia un futuro
mejor y al mismo tiempo crear conciencia sobre el
tema para prevenir más daño”

EMPOWERING BOYS THROUGH
MENTORSHIP
Brandon was just a kid from the
neighborhood - strong but unsure of
himself, often feeling like an outsider
among his peers. One day, his life took
an unexpected turn when his neighbor
Ron pulled him aside and asked for
help assembling scaffolding. Brandon
was stunned. He had no idea what to do, but the fact
that Ron saw potential in him sparked a powerful
moment of self-discovery.
For Brandon, being seen and valued by Ron was
transformative. Ron did not treat him like a boy or
a project; he treated him like someone capable of
greatness. He recognized something in Brandon that
Brandon had not yet seen in himself. This was not just
about scaffolding - it was about empowerment, respect,
and trust. Ron was a mentor who believed in Brandon’s
abilities long before Brandon could. His leadership
went beyond teaching a skill; it was about fostering
self-confidence and inspiring growth.
Most of us have a “Ron” in our lives - someone
who helped shape our values, taught us to engage
meaningfully with others, and showed us how to
trust ourselves. Mentors like Ron offer more than
guidance; they create a foundation for personal
development through love, respect, and patience. They
68 JANUARY 2025 | GBSAN.COM
do not impose expectations but nurture
curiosity and exploration. Through these
relationships, we learn the art of building
trust - not just with others, but with
ourselves.
January is National Mentoring Month
- a time to reflect on the life-changing
power of mentorship. One organization
making a significant impact is Boys to
Men Mentoring, supported by a dedicated
group of men who show up week after
week to guide over 850 boys across San
Diego County. These mentors do more than
teach life skills - they create safe spaces
where boys can grow, reflect, and discover
their true potential. They listen, accept,
and empower the boys to become the best
versions of themselves.
At Boys to Men, mentors are trained to
meet boys where they are - listening without
judgment, taking their words at face value,
and asking open-ended questions that spark
self-reflection. Questions like “How is that
working for you?” and “If you could change
something, what would it be?” prompt
boys to explore their true desires and take
responsibility for their choices. Every time
a boy makes a positive choice, mentors
Founder Joe Sigurdson leads
a retreat for Boys to Men
are there to reinforce it with a text or phone call, offering
encouragement and support as they continue their journey
toward growth and self-discovery.
Mentorship is a transformative partnership where both mentor
and mentee learn from one another, grow together, and forge a
lasting bond. For mentors, the joy of witnessing a young man’s
success brings a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment.
As social beings, we thrive in community - and that is exactly
what Boys to Men is creating. These intergenerational
communities are rooted in unconditional love, open-hearted
listening, acceptance, and encouragement. This January,
consider joining this movement as a mentor. Whether you can
give an hour a week or a lifetime of support, your presence
could change a young man’s
life - and enrich your own in
ways you never imagined.
To learn more, contact Boys to
Men at (619) 469-9599 or visit
www.BoysToMen.org.
Join us on April 5 for Boys to

of inspiration, community,
and exciting surprises. You will
not want to miss it!

SOMMELIER CONCERTMASTER
SERIES OPENS TO A SOLD-OUT CROWD
This past November 16th, the first ever
Sommelier Concertmaster Series concert
opened to a sold-out audience at
the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.
The highly
anticipated,
one-of-a-kind
classical music and wine event
invited the audience to “taste
what they hear,” pairing the
works performed to top-tier
wines.
Each performance is led by
a concertmaster (the lead
violinist of an orchestra) who
collaborates with their chosen
sommelier to connect the music

performed to the perfect glass of wine. The musicians
and the sommeliers then discuss the connection
between the wine and the performance between each
musical section, combining for a truly unique sensory
experience.
The opening concert featured
Philadelphia Orchestra
concertmaster David Kim
who was paired with Rafael
Peterson, former Wine Director
of Born and Raised and Dining
Room Captain of ADDISON.
Kim performed works by
Beethoven, Handel and
Dohnanyi with his orchestral
colleagues Burchard Chang,
viola and Priscilla Lee, cello.

The Sommelier Concertmaster
series is presented by Mainly
Mozart, best known as the
largest Mozart themed festival
in North America, as well as
its annual Mainly Mozart All-

to the largest gathering of
concertmasters and principal
players in the United States.
There are two more concerts
in this one-of-a-kind series,
though very few tickets
remain. The next concert is
on January 11, when Dallas
Symphony Concertmaster
Alexander Kerr will be joined
by Dallas Symphony coconcertmaster
Nathan Olson

GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS
Unparalleled Nature
and Wildlife Expedition
Pinnacle Rock on Bartolome
One of the most exotic and
unspoiled destinations on the
planet is the Galápagos Islands.
An archipelago of volcanic
islands in the Eastern Pacific
is home to some of the greatest
biodiversity on the planet and a
protected land and marine environment that was the
first UNESCO World Heritage
Site, recognized in 1978. The
abundant variety of wildlife
allowed Charles Darwin to
observe the differences from
island to island in 1835 and led
to the theory of evolution.

We planned our Galápagos journey through
Boutique Travel Advisors who crafted the perfect
itinerary which started in Quito, Ecuador an
alluring capital city- also a World Heritage Site. We
had time to experience and stroll Quito’s historic
Centre and venture a few miles out of the city to
visit the Equator where we had the opportunity to
stand with one foot in the Northern hemisphere,
and one foot in the Southern!
From there, we flew to the Galápagos to begin our
cruise which visited the islands of Baltra, Santiago,
Rábida, Bartolomé, Genovesa and Santa Cruz. Our
home away from home was the HX MS Santa Cruz
II which provided a relaxed atmosphere in high
quality surroundings. As required by Ecuadorian
law, the ship has a maximum capacity of 90 allowing
each guest to have personal service onboard and
intimate experience with the animals with each
naturalist-led shore excursion while at the same
time never overwhelming the natural environment.

Esteban and Danitza in Darwin Bay with Galapagos sea lions
Each island was a completely new experience – from ecosystem
to climate to wildlife. Some islands were barren rocky
lava fields, others were lush tropical jungles. Each of these
terrestrial habitats was home to a different and iconic animal -
marine iguanas, giant tortoises, blue- and red-footed boobies
and Darwin’s finches. In the water we encountered manta rays,
seals, penguins, sharks and a multitude of tropical fish.

As an HX Expedition Cruise, our journey stayed true to its
name. With a variety of morning hikes, shore excursions,
snorkeling opportunities, stargazing, nature lectures and
science experiments there was always something keeping us
busy. The ship’s onboard Expedition Team consisting of local
guides allowed us to directly encounter the many natural
wonders in our small zodiac boats and landing parties.
