From our Board President
I am filled with immense pride as we reflect on an amazing 2024 for Akropolis Reed Quintet,
which included a GRAMMY® nomination (a first for the ensemble), AND I am excited for what
Akropolis has in store for 2025 and beyond! This exceptional group of artists and their
collaborations with creative communities (from young aspiring Detroit musicians to cuttingedge
composers) embody the spirit of innovation, artistry, and community, captivating
audiences with fearless creation and exploration of the boundaries of chamber music. Thank
you to everyone who has supported Akropolis along the way, from buying a ticket to creating
music with Kari, Matt, Tim, Ryan & Andrew, thank you for supporting the mission and passion
to make music that sparks joy and wonder.

Welcome to our first ever Annual Report, a celebration of our 15th
anniversary season made possible by our community of supporters,
artists, and audience members worldwide. If you are reading this report, you
are integral to the impact we have and the difference we make in the world.
Thank you!
This year we achieved our major goal of receiving a GRAMMY®
nomination. After 5 years, 4 recording sessions, 2 new lifelong friendships
with collaborative artists Pascal Le Boeuf and Christian Euman, hours of
mixing and editing, grants from foundations such as the Aaron Copland
Fund for Music, and much more, our Are We Dreaming the Same Dream?
album was released into the world in April 2024. It reached #2 on the
Classical Billboard Charts and ultimately was nominated for a GRAMMY®.
Matt Landry
Executive
Director and
Akropolis
Saxophonist
This past year we grew immensely. We received our largest single gift of
support, a $75,000 matching challenge grant from the Paul M. Angell
Family Foundation, enabling us to hire our first staff person, Deanna Sirkot,
who joined us in July. This has increased our annual operating budget, our
capacity to fundraise and administer our educational programs, and
ultimately will create a sustainable pathway to the next 15 years of Akropolis.
If you’re wondering what’s next, stay tuned for two new works we are
commissioning from Pulitzer Prize and 3-time GRAMMY® winning
composer, Jennifer Higdon: a chamber work for Akropolis premiered
during the 26/27 season, and a concerto for Akropolis and orchestra
premiered during the 27/28 season.
We made so many memories this past year, performing in Amsterdam with
our heroes in the Calefax Reed Quintet, watching the blazing northern
lights with the participants at our 3rd annual Akropolis Chamber Music
Institute, and so much more. But for me, the greatest honor was showing my
son Theo how to create a better world through music, and doing it with my
wife, Kari, and my best friends Ryan, Andrew, and Tim. To all Akropolis’
supporters, thank you for making our dreams come true, and allowing me to
do the best job in the world.

"Participating in ACMI was an
incredible, life-changing experience.
The opportunities offered for such close collaboration and
community building were incredibly unique and special,
something you aren't likely to find anywhere else. It was
such a special celebration of all kinds of chamber music,
and all kinds of newly composed music. I really value the
connections made with other festival members and the
Akropolis Reed Quintet." ~ 2024 Participant
Detroit High Schools

schools in Detroit since 2017. These schools are
Cass Technical High School, Detroit School of
Arts, and M.L.K., Jr. Sr. High School. Each year,
Akropolis visits each school around 20 times
throughout the year, helping students compose
new works which Akropolis premieres and
records, publishing each work on YouTube.

"The Akropolis Reed Quintet is an absolute delight. Their ability to engage and interact

The work of Akropolis is transformative among communities and plays a critical role

"To my knowledge they are one of few, if not the only ensemble, in my immediate and
metropolitan community of Detroit doing this work. To put it plainly, they are meeting
people (blacks, whites, latinx, young, old, business owners, students and more) where
they are and are creating a larger community connected by their music."
