ELEMENTAL SPIRITS

The Mystical Guardians of Nature: Tree and Elemental Spirits in UK
Celtic Traditions and Beliefs
In the verdant lands of the United Kingdom, Celtic traditions imbue the
natural environment with a profound spiritual essence, particularly
through the veneration of tree and elemental spirits. These beliefs
illustrate a deep bond between the ancient Celts and their landscapes,
filled with a reverence that transforms forests into sacred assemblies of
nature and magic.
Among the most revered spirits in Celtic lore are the Dryads, spirits
linked specifically to trees, believed to inhabit and animate the woods.
Each type of tree is thought to have its own spirit, but certain trees like
the oak, ash, and yew hold higher sacred status, associated with unique
magical properties and spiritual significance. These tree spirits are not
merely passive dwellers; they are active guardians of their domains,
possessing wisdom and mystical powers that they can impart to those
who treat them with respect and caution.
The Celts also believed in the Sidhe, (pronounced 'shee') often referred
to as fairies, who are intricately linked with natural features such as hills,
rivers, and particularly groves. The Sidhe are portrayed as powerful and
ethereal beings that can affect the lives of humans with blessings or
curses, reflecting the unpredictable nature of the elements they govern.
These spirits interact with the world at dusk and dawn, the liminal times
where the boundaries between the earthly and the spiritual blur.
Elemental spirits govern the more primal aspects of nature and are
categorised according to the ancient philosophical concept of the four
elements: earth, air, fire and water. Each element is populated by its own
spirits. Nymphs and Undines, for instance, watch over water sources,
embodying the fluidity and cleansing properties of water. They are
protectors of all aquatic bodies, from small streams to vast lakes, and are
often depicted as being as temperamental as the waters they inhabit.

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
Sylphs, the spirits of the air, are believed to control the winds and were
thought to communicate divine messages through the rustling leaves and
the whistling breezes. Their presence is a constant reminder of the
invisible forces that animate the world.
Fire spirits, or Salamanders in classical elemental belief, embody the
transformative power of fire. The Celts celebrated these spirits during
key festivals such as Beltane, where bonfires were lit not only to mark
the seasons but also to honour the fire spirits, inviting them to purify the
land and the community.
These elemental beliefs underscore an essential tenet of Celtic
spirituality: the interconnectedness of all life and the reciprocal
relationship between humans and the natural world. Rituals and seasonal
celebrations, which remain integral to modern Celtic practices, reflect
this philosophy by emphasising harmony with nature and seeking the
blessings of its myriad spirits.
Today, while the literal belief in such spirits may have waned, their
symbolic significance continues to inspire a cultural reverence for nature
within Celtic communities and beyond. These ancient narratives
encourage a respectful coexistence with the natural world, advocating
for the protection and appreciation of our environments as holders of
both ecological and spiritual value.
Through stories of tree and elemental spirits, the Celts have left a legacy
that enriches our understanding of the natural world, casting forests not
just as resources but as sacred spaces that nourish both the earth and
the spirit.

THE MEANING OF
HOLISITIC HEALING
Sophia Steeden
Have you ever wondered what holistic healing actually means?
Holistic healing is a wellness approach that considers the whole
person including; physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health. It
can be particularly beneficial for complex issues as it can help
address the root causes of concerns, not just the symptoms.
Benefits of Holistic Healing
Holistic healing can have many benefits, such as:
Helping with a range of mental health issues including stress,
anxiety, and depression. It can also help improve self-esteem and
identity, and create a sense of purpose and fulfilment.
Aiding in identifying underlying causes such as past trauma and
removing negative emotions.
Helping with a range of physical issues including; chronic pain,
digestion, IBS, and fatigue.

Embracing a Holistic lifestyle
Identify your values and goals
What is it that you want to achieve? Do you need help to get to
this goal?
Nutrition
A healthy diet filled with fresh whole foods can lower your risk of
disease, including type 2 diabetes, and help your digestive system
to function properly. Nutrition can help to improve your mood
and mental health.
Hydration
Water is essential to life. It accounts for 60% of our body weight
and performs crucial roles such as carrying nutrients between our
major organs.
Exercise
Exercise releases the happy hormones - dopamine & serotonin,
which boosts your energy and self-confidence.
Sleep
Sleep is an essential and involuntary process without which we
cannot function effectively. It is necessary for good mental and
physical health.
Relax
Learn to take time out to relax and enjoy life; allow your mind to
be still.
Breathe
Don’t forget to BREATHE. Practicing deep breathing on a daily
basis will keep the ‘fight, flight, or freeze’ response at bay.
Incorporating these changes into your lifestyle, together with other
holistic therapies on your healing journey will help to create a life of
freedom and happiness for you, to be you, without worry or fear of
judgement from others.
If anything you have read resonates with you or you’re simply

THE HISTORY OF
WITCHCRAFT
Sue Penney
The History of Witchcraft in the UK: From Ancient
Beliefs to Modern Practice
Witchcraft in the United Kingdom has a complex and
turbulent history, evolving from ancient pagan roots to
become one of the most infamous and misunderstood
practices in British society. Often influenced by shifting
political, religious, and social tides, perceptions of
witchcraft have ranged from reverence to persecution
and, more recently, acceptance as a legitimate spiritual
path. Spanning millennia, the history of witchcraft in the
UK offers a unique lens through which we can view
societal fears, spiritual beliefs, and changing cultural
values.
Ancient Roots and Early Practices
Long before the Christianisation of the British Isles,
indigenous spiritual practices in the region often included
elements that would later be associated with witchcraft.
Pagan beliefs in deities of nature, the use of herbal
remedies, and the practice of divination were common,
and certain individuals—frequently women—were valued
within their communities for their knowledge of healing,
midwifery, and spiritual guidance. These early
practitioners, sometimes known as “wise women” or
“cunning folk,” held a respected place in rural and village
life, acting as healers and mediators with the natural
world.
As Christianity spread across Britain from the 4th century
onwards, however, these pre-Christian beliefs and
practices came into conflict with the teachings of the
Church. While not immediately persecuted, many pagan
traditions were gradually replaced or assimilated into
Christian customs, with certain folk practices even
adapted into the Christian calendar. Over time, however,
the Church’s stance hardened, viewing traditional folk
practices and supernatural beliefs as incompatible with
Christian doctrine. Paganism and associated practices
were increasingly seen as morally dangerous, a view that
would only intensify in the coming centuries.

The Rise of Witch Hunts and Trials
By the late 15th century, European fears of witches and
demonic forces began to spill over into the UK. This fear was
partly spurred by “Malleus Maleficarum” (1486), a witchhunting
manual that claimed witches were in league with the
Devil. This book influenced witch hunts across Europe and laid
the foundation for much of the hysteria around witches,
moving away from earlier, more localised superstitions. Fearful
that witches wielded dark, supernatural powers, communities
began to suspect any misfortune—such as crop failure, disease,
or sudden deaths—might be the result of malevolent magic.
The fear of witchcraft became so intense that in 1542, Henry
VIII enacted the first English Witchcraft Act, which made
practicing witchcraft punishable by death. Although this Act
was repealed under Mary I, it was reinstated by Elizabeth I in
1563, allowing for stricter persecution of suspected witches.
James VI of Scotland (later James I of England) took a personal
interest in witchcraft, particularly after he survived a stormy
voyage believed to have been caused by witches. His treatise
“Daemonologie,” published in 1597, provided a comprehensive
account of how to identify and prosecute witches, encouraging
further fear and suspicion across Britain. Under his reign, witch
trials became particularly brutal, especially in Scotland.
Between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Britain saw
some of its most notorious witch trials. In 1612, the Pendle
Witch Trials in Lancashire led to the execution of ten people
accused of witchcraft. The case of the Bideford Witches in
1682 marked one of the last executions for witchcraft in
England. Scotland, however, bore the brunt of witch
persecution. It is estimated that between 1560 and 1707, over
3,000 people, primarily women, were accused of witchcraft in
Scotland, with approximately two-thirds facing execution.
Often, these accusations were fuelled by personal vendettas,
local grievances, or hysteria, reflecting the social dynamics of
small communities under strain.
The Decline of Witch Hunts and the Rise of Skepticism
By the late 17th century, public opinion around witchcraft
began to shift. Advances in science, the rise of Enlightenment
thinking, and the work of sceptical thinkers led many to
question the legitimacy of witch trials. High-profile cases, such
as the Salem Witch Trials in America, highlighted the dangers of
mob mentality and irrational fear.
11
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
In Britain, legal attitudes also began to change, moving away
from the earlier severity.
The Witchcraft Act of 1735 marked a significant turning point.
Rather than criminalising witchcraft itself, the new law focused
on prosecuting individuals who claimed to possess magical
powers as frauds. This shift signalled the decline of witch hunts
in the UK, as the government increasingly saw witchcraft
accusations as superstitions rather than legitimate criminal
offenses. While belief in the supernatural persisted among
certain communities, public witch trials largely faded, replaced
by a more secular understanding of justice and punishment.
Witchcraft in Modern Britain
While witchcraft largely receded from public life over the next
two centuries, the early 20th century saw a renewed interest in
occult and mystical practices, influenced by spiritualism,
folklore, and anthropology. The repeal of the Witchcraft Act in
1951 allowed for the public practice of neo-pagan religions,
including Wicca. Gerald Gardner, often regarded as the founder
of modern Wicca, published “Witchcraft Today” in 1954,
helping to popularize the idea of witchcraft as a modern
religion that emphasised nature, self-empowerment, and ethical
responsibility.
Today, witchcraft in the UK is widely accepted as a legitimate
spiritual path, with many practitioners identifying as Wiccans,
pagans, or neo-pagans.
Sue Penney
Soul Verse
soulverse.co.uk
Modern witchcraft emphasises harmony with nature, personal
growth, and the celebration of seasonal festivals like Samhain
and Beltane. Rather than facing persecution, contemporary
practitioners of witchcraft contribute to a vibrant and diverse
spiritual landscape. British society now respects freedom of
belief and expression, making it possible for those who practice
modern witchcraft to reclaim and celebrate their heritage
openly.
The legacy of British witch trials remains a poignant reminder
of the dangers of fear and superstition. Yet it has also inspired
resilience, with modern witches and neo-pagans reclaiming a
history once marred by persecution and transforming it into a
practice centred on community, respect for nature, and
personal empowerment. Through this transformation, the
history of witchcraft in the UK reflects a broader journey from
intolerance to acceptance, showing how societies can evolve to
embrace diversity and protect individual freedoms.

ARCHANGEL MESSAGES
AND COLOURS
Carol Coggan
Introduction
The Angels are wanting me to share with you cards
from the Angels & Auras deck.
As you look at these cards of the Archangels,
consider the colour of each of the Archangels and
notice how you can be affected by that colour. I
have also drawn an accompanying card for each
specific Archangel.
I suggest you sit quietly and call in your Guardian
Angel and Angels, then really look at the cards and
see what speaks to you.
It may be the colour, or a particular word or parts
of the image.
You will find that although reading this in the
Alchemical Voice, the cards are still specific to you,
as your Angels will guide you as to what to focus
on.
You can always return to these cards, you do not
have to just look at them in January and February.
If you choose to use them at other times, your
Angels will direct you to the message they want
you to receive.
You will also see on the cards some positive words,
and then negative words upside down. These
negative words are the shadow side, and if you find
you resonate with these negatives, then most
definitely you can work with the Archangel to heal
and transform to the positive energies.
14
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
January and February
What better way to start the New Year than with
Archangel Sandalphon. Archangel Sandalphon is
known to convey our prayers to heaven and deliver
answers back to us.
We are often very quick to send prayers, or
requests but often we do not listen to the answer.
We end up worrying about the problem until
another one comes along. Prayers, and requests do
not always have to be for things, here you can see
the words forgiveness, seeking, freedom, healing.
On the underside is resentment, bitterness,
withdrawal and pain. So if you are experiencing any
of the negatives then ask Archangel Sandalphon to
step in and guide you towards healing and
forgiveness, focus on the card and also the colour
turquoise.
Turquoise is the colour of kindness and
forgiveness. Turquoise energy allows you to rise
above any situation and see it from a Divine
perspective. So when you are challenged or in a
painful situation, focus on this card and the colour
turquoise, helicopter above it all and you will be
able to see wisdom and the way forward.
The Divine Magic card has appeared as you work
with Archangel Sandalphon, so whilst you are
sending prayers for healing and asking for help.
This card reminds us of Divine Magic - it celebrates
wishes, goals, dreams and accomplishments. It is
suggesting that you be clear on your dreams and
vision for your life.
By focusing on your dreams, wishes, and goals, the
Universe hears what you want, sees the direction
you want to go in and will help you manifest it.
15
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
January and February (Continued)
The second Archangel who has stepped in to work with you at this time is Archangel Uriel.
This is Archangel Uriel Red (sometimes you may see Uriel Gold). Archangel Uriel works well with both
colours and is known for epiphanies – major breakthroughs.
Here Archangel Uriel is reminding us to ask for emotional healing and as you heal then your life will be
transformed. The positives on this card are emotions, healing, devotion, integration. Obviously all
aspects of healing will integrate you and transform your life.
Red is the colour of our emotions and how we interact with the world. Red allows us to manage our
energy exchange with others and the card shows a red aura indicating that the person is a healer of
sorts. So if you resonate with the colour red at this time then be aware of your energy and capacity for
healing with Archangel Uriel Red’s guidance.
16
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
The card that Archangel Uriel Red wishes to work
with you is a Shower of Prosperity.
How lovely to see the shower of gold coins
representing wealth, opportunity, success and
manifestation. This shows that your wealth is
expanding, whilst it may be financial, it is also in
other areas like opportunity and success.
Remember to give thanks for all the positives in
your life. The more gratitude you express and
sharing your good fortune with others will enable
the Universe to circulate abundance and wealth
through you.
Such lovely Angel messages for the start of the year;
as you look at them, listen to any thoughts or
feelings that come through and know the Angels will
bless and guide you in your future direction.
If you want to receive an Angel card reading, help
expanding on these cards and working with these
Archangels or help creating your vision/dream then

LIFE IS AN ONGOING
PAINTING
John Sjovik
The smell of paint
A brush in a glass
Off to a hopeful start
But paint’s gone dry, alas
The ground is lacking shade
And heaven’s a doubtful blue
The Sun is pale and sad
And Moon lacks golden hue
The canvas is a messy chaos
And easel limping badly
Sometimes life can feel like an unfinished painting on a wobbly easel. The overall
structure is there, yet the details seem to be missing. Shapes have been
suggested, but content and colour are wrong.
Or are they?
A blue sky may well be green, when you look more closely. Your dreams may turn
it slightly pink. A sad moment will render it a gloomy grey. Some days are fuzzy
and round. Other days seem naked and angular.
Think of your life as one of those animated films where forms constantly change
and colours vibrate from one hue to the next. Lift your pen and change shapes.
Raise your brush and add different colours.
The rainbow of your life sparkles and glows during the day. At night, it rests in a
magic grey and black, dotted with silver.
18
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
A colourful sand painting is meant to be temporary. Beautiful as it is, it will be
scattered by the wind after it has served its purpose.
Life is a series of moments, each one to be cherished and honoured in its own
right.
Nothing of true value will last forever. That is why you need to seize the moment
and cherish a drop of rain before it slips through your fingers. There is never a
better moment to act than right now.
Apply your brush before the paint goes dry.
I wish you a day full of wondercolours.

THE EMERALD TABLETS OF
THOTH THE ATLANTEAN
Julie de Vere Hunt
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
The Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean are one of the
most significant esoteric texts never to have been
discovered.
They are attributed to Thoth, an Atlantean priest-king who
later became known as the legendary Egyptian god of
wisdom, writing and knowledge. According to the tablets,
Thoth escaped the sinking of Atlantis and brought his
wisdom to ancient Egypt. The tablets reveal secret wisdom
and teachings about metaphysical knowledge. Themes
include secret alchemy, the development of spiritual
consciousness, and the connection between our physical
world and the ethereal dimension. A guidebook for spiritual
evolution and transcending human limitations.
The text is poetic and symbolic, with much use of allegory
to convey spiritual truths (like some of the gnostic gospels).
They consist of twelve tablets of emerald green, formed
from a substance created through alchemical transmutation.
Emeralds are often associated with wisdom and insight. In
some traditions, the colour green is linked to the heart
chakra, which relates to compassion, healing and
understanding. Emeralds represent immortality and the
cyclical nature of life, death and rebirth. In alchemical
traditions, emeralds embody eternal life and regeneration.
They are imperishable, and resistant to all elements and
substances, effectively violating the material law of
ionization. Upon them are engraved characters in the
ancient Atlantean language; characters which respond to
attuned thought waves, releasing the associated mental
vibration in the mind of the reader.
The tablets are fastened together with hoops of goldencoloured
alloy suspended from a rod of the same material.
20
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
Except there is no archaeological evidence to prove these
tablets physically exist.
My Irish friend Eileen reads them daily and recommended the
translation by Maurice Doreal (Doreal suggests one reads
them 100 times). I was interested because the first tablet
relates the downfall of Atlantis which I am currently
researching.
Maurice Doreal, born Claude Doggins in 1898, was an
American occultist who claimed to have received the Emerald
Tablets of Thoth translation in the 1930’s. He founded the
Brotherhood of the White Temple in 1930 and began sharing
his teachings, the translation of the Emerald tablets being a
cornerstone of the Brotherhood’s philosophy.
According to Doreal, he got permission to translate these
ancient texts while visiting the Great Pyramid of Giza, where
the tablets were kept safe. Doreal believed he was chosen for
this mission due to his spiritual development and ability to
receive such profound knowledge.
Tablet 1: The History of Thoth the Atlantean
“In the great city of Keor on the island of Undal (Atlantis) in a
time far past, I began this incarnation. Not as the little men of the
present age did the mighty ones of Atlantis live and die, but
rather from aeon to aeon did they renew their lives in the Halls of
Amenti where the river of life flows eternally onward.”
“Strong were we with the power drawn from the eternal fire (in
the Halls of Amenti). And of all these, greatest among the
children of men was my father Thotmes, keeper of the great
temple, link between the Children of Light who dwelt within the
temple and the races of men who inhabited the ten islands (of
Atlantis). Mouthpiece, after the three (Children of Light), of the
Dweller of Unal, speaking to the Kings (ten) with the voice that
must be obeyed.”
“Gradually from the Kingdoms of Atlantis passed waves of
consciousness that had been one with me, only to be replaced by
spawn of a lower star…
Downwards into darkness turned the thoughts of the Atlanteans,
until at last in his wrath arose from the Agwanti, the Dweller,
speaking the Word, calling the power…
21
Over the world then broke the great flood waters, drowning and sinking, changing Earth’s balance until only
the Temple of Light was left standing on the great mountain on Undal still rising out of the water.”
“Called to me then the Master (Dweller), saying, ‘Gather ye together thy people. Take them by the arts and
magic ye have learned until ye reach the land of the hairy barbarians, dwelling in caves of the desert. Follow
the plan that ye know of.’”
“Gathered I then thy people and entered the great (space) ship of the Master… Fast we fled toward the sun of
the morning, until beneath us lay the land of the children of Khem (Egypt).
TABLET V: THE DWELLER OF UNAL
“Deep ‘neath the rocks, I buried my spaceship, waiting the time when man might be free. Over the spaceship,
erected a marker in the form of a lion yet like unto man (The Great Sphinx)
Raging, they came with cudgels and spears lifted in anger seeking to slay and utterly destroy the Sons of
Atlantis. Then raised I my staff and directed a ray of vibration, striking them still in their tracks as fragments
of stone of the mountain. Then spoke I to them in words calm and peaceful, telling them of the might of
Atlantis, saying we were children of the Sun and its messengers. Cowed I them by my display of magicscience,
until at my feet they grovelled, when I released them.
22
Long time I dwelt in the land of Khem, doing great works by
the wisdom within me. Upward grew into the light of
knowledge the children of Khem, watered by the rains of my
wisdom. Blasted I then a path to Amenti so that I might retain
my powers, living from age to age a Sun of Atlantis, keeping
the wisdom, preserving the records.
Raised I high over the entrance, a doorway, a gateway leading
down to Amenti. Few there would be with courage to dare it,
few pass the portal to dark Amenti. Raised over the passage, I,
a mighty pyramid (Great Pyramid) using the power that
overcomes Earth force (gravity).
Deep and yet deeper placed I a force-house or chamber; from
it carved I a circular passage reaching almost to the great
summit.
There in the apex, set I the crystal, sending the ray into the
‘Time-Space’, drawing the force from out of the ether,
concentrating upon the gateway to Amenti.
Other chambers I built and left vacant to all seeming, yet
hidden within them are the keys to Amenti. He who would
dare the dark realms, let him be purified first by long fasting.
Lie in the sarcophagus of stone in my chamber (Kings
chamber).
Then I reveal to him the great mysteries. Built I the Great
Pyramid, patterned after the pyramid of earth force, burning
eternally so that it, too, might remain through the ages. In it, I
built my knowledge of ‘Magic-Science’ so that it might be here
when I return from Amenti, while I sleep in the Halls of Amenti,
my Soul roaming free will incarnate, dwell among men in this
form of another (Hermes, thrice-born).
Emissary on Earth am I of the Dweller, fulfilling his commands
so man might be lifted. Preserve ye and keep the command of
the Dweller; lift ever upwards your eyes toward the light.
Surely in time, ye are one with the Master… one with the All.
Now I depart from ye. Know my commandments, keep them
and be them, and I will be with you, helping and guiding into
the Light. Now before me opens the portal. Go I down into the
darkness of night.”

Believe or not.
The vibration with the words will awaken a response in
your soul.
Atlantis symbolizes a lost golden age of advanced
knowledge and spiritual wisdom. It represents an idealized
civilization that attained high material and spiritual
achievements. However, due to moral and ethical
corruption, it fell out of favour with the gods and
submerged into the ocean in a cataclysmic event.
Atlantis was first written about by the Greek philosopher
Plato, in his dialogues “Timaeus” and “Critias”, written
around 360 BC. Plato said Atlantis was located beyond the
“Pillars of Hercules” (Strait of Gibraltar).
The story of Atlantis has intrigued scholars, mystics and
writers for centuries. I would like to add to the speculation
about Atlantis by posing the following;
1. Why did Thoth need a spaceship to evacuate the
Atlanteans if it was on Earth?
2. Plato was able to describe Atlantis so fully as he was
from there. However, it was not on planet Earth but on
another planet.
3. Was the ‘spawn from a lower star’ mentioned in Tablet
1 a non-benevolent planet such as Andromeda?
4. The Fall of Atlantis was caused by an inter-galactic war,
not a natural disaster.
5. Does the Great Sphinx have the Regulus star (from the
Leo constellation) embedded in its chest to remind the
Atlanteans of the planet they were evacuated from?
All of the above and more will be in my next book…

THE HIDDEN PEOPLE

Iceland - The magical island of ice and fire
An eye-opening walkabout
The Norwegian-Swedish author Margit Sandemo, who
wrote “The Legend of the Ice People”, claimed that
Gods exist only as long as someone believes in them. I
think this could also relate to the hidden people of
Iceland. I have always known that there is something
out there, whether in the forest, the sea or out in
space but not everyone can see it with their bare
eyes. Mind you, I have not always been able to see
trolls and elves and such. I consider myself very
fortunate that the veils have opened up for me to
experience these dimensions. And they did indeed as I
visited Iceland the first time some years ago.
A friend and I were hiking in the mountains when
something strange happened. A sudden movement in
the corner of my eye caught my attention and I saw
the face of a giant appear on the mountainside. I
thought that it was peculiar and quickly discarded it as
an illusion. The fascinating landscape with glaciers,
boiling geysers, hot springs and multicoloured soil can
easily play with your mind, so I kept walking.
Then I saw it again - something did move! As I turned
around to look again the face had changed expression.
It was like staring into the eyes of a very old creature
that smiled right back at me. That felt quite
confusing.
After a while my friend also stopped to look around
and said; ”I see faces everywhere and they are
moving, am I going crazy or what?”This was the start
of a magical journey that has kept calling me back to
this land of elves and giants.
26
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
How it all started
Iceland is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, between Greenland and Europe. It belongs to Europe
although geographically it is divided across two continents. The North American and Eurasian tectonic
plates on the Mid-Atlantic ridge are constantly moving and causing earthquakes and eruptions that
keep remodelling the landscape. Some would say that one cannot live under such circumstances, but
the Icelandic population seems to adapt really well.
The first settlement started in the 9th century by Ingólfur Arnarson and his wife Hallveig Fróðadóttir.
They called it Reykjavik which means smoky bay. It is said that Leif Erikson, who is thought to be the
first European explorer to America, was born there. There is a statue of him in front of Hallgrímskirkja,
the famous church in the centre of Reykjavik.
Iceland has around 320,000 inhabitants. Just as many Icelanders live elsewhere in the world. This may
not be so strange since the weather conditions can be quite harsh. As they say on the island; ”If you
don’t like the weather, just wait for five minutes.” Even though the seismic activity of the thirty or so
active volcanoes is constantly monitored there is no way of knowing for sure when the next volcanic
eruption might occur. There was actually some activity not far from Reykjavik when I visited in May
2024 and I could watch some new mountains being born just before my eyes.
Huldufólk (Huldu; folk = people)
Some say that more than half of the population believes in the hidden or invisible people. They are
called the Huldufólk and consist of several different creatures including goblins, giants, dwarves and
trolls.
When planning the infrastructure in Iceland, certain people are given the task to communicate with
these beings to ask for permission. If they do not agree to boulders being moved or buildings or roads
being built at a particular spot everything has to be rearranged.
There is also a strong belief in magic among many Icelanders. This was put to the test during the
financial crisis of 2008-2011 when there was a threat of Iceland going bankrupt. I have been told that
when the British government was against a beneficial agreement to save Iceland, horse heads were put
up and aimed at the British Isles. This is said to be among the most fearful things you can do to an
enemy. One week later the UK voted for participating in the deal.
There was also a story in the papers last winter about two neighbours fighting using the same technique
and mediators had to be called in to stop the conflict. These things are taken very seriously.
27
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
Ásatrúarfélagið (Ása = Norse gods; trúar = believe in; félagið
= society)
In Iceland, there are three different ways of going through
communion. You can either study with the Lutheran Church
of Iceland, be educated by the Icelandic Ethical Humanistic
Association called Sidmennt or learn about the Norse faith at
Ásatrúarfélagið.Ásatrúarfélagið is the largest non-Christian
religious community in Iceland. It was founded in 1972 and
has 5000 members, a signifcant number when compared to
Sweden which has about 2000 registered members and
Denmark which has around 600 members.
There are two Norse temple buildings in Iceland, the main,
Hof in Reykjavik and Ásheimar up north near Skagafjörður.
The one in Reykjavik is in use although still under
construction. Some of the ceremonies held by Ásatrúarfélagið
are performed at Thingvellir which is where one of the oldest
surviving parliaments in the world was founded. The Prime
Minister of Iceland has his summer residence in the same
location. This is one of the very few places on Earth where
you can take a walk between two continental plates.
Conclusion
So what is actually happening on this mythical island? Is it true
that elves are living under the rocks and that they lure humans
passing by to join them? Animals and humans are said to have
vanished in the rocky moonscape between the airport at
Keflavik and Reykjavik never to return, with no logical
explanation.
I have seen goblins running beside the car at Snæfellsnes and
heard whispering voices at the lakes of Myvatn. It is difficult
not to see giants, fairies and other creatures as you walk
through the rocky landscapes at Dimmuborgir. Could it be that
Margit Sandemo was right and that the huldufólk don't hide
away so quickly because so many people still believe in them?

If nothing else, you can definitely find a very special
connection to nature here. Camping in Iceland and feeling the
rumble of one of the daily 70-100 earthquakes is like hearing
Mother Earth talk. Walking among boiling geysers and puffing
volcanoes is a grand feeling. It humbles you as you realise that
there is 'really' no choice but to adapt to the whims of nature. I
doubt that anyone who travels this island can be anything but
dazzled.

THE VALUE
OF LIFE
John Sjovik
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
Apparently, the combined commercial value of all basic
elements of an average human body is an amount in the
order of £1,540. So, in some way, dear reader, that is
how much you are worth.
Fortunately, we do not establish value and meaning to
human life by looking at the carbon content and
presence of oxygen, hydrogen and a handful of other
elements in it. Yet, this exercise provides an indication
of the obvious fact that the value of human life lies well
beyond the physical.
The first funeral I ever attended was for a distant
relative of my family, a man called Gustaf. He had
worked in a factory, making biscuits and cookies. When
I was a little boy, I loved his visits because he always
brought a bag full of cookies. Gustaf never married, had
a basic school education and never did anything
remarkable. He lived in an inconspicuous little flat and
had no possessions of particular value. Yet, I have a
vivid memory of his funeral and the words of the
minister. “When we look back at the life of a human
being”, the minister said, “it is not the actions, temporal
achievements and earthly possessions that define the
meaning of that life. There is intrinsic value in all life.”
This may sound obvious but it is certainly worth
thinking about and expounding upon.
I wish I could think of a better word than ‘value’. That
word suggests a level of usefulness and utility. ‘Value’
also inhabits an emotional quality, such as love of a
family member, a pet or a place.
There are even t-shirts with the words “I love...” and
then the name of a city printed on them.
30
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
Think of the word ‘valuable’ - value able. The ability to
possess value and be able to express it or show it. To be
able to have value. If we break down the word like that,
it turns out quite unsavoury. Surely, something or
someone ought to be able to be of value without having
the ability to demonstrate it? A new born child, in all its
helplessness and lacking of most abilities, is still of
immeasurable value, infinitely valuable.
One for all and all for one
If I would remove every single ant in an area the size on
an acre, it would have an impact on the local ecosystem
and habitat. But what if I were to remove just one ant?
Would it matter?
The notion that all life has immeasurable value is quite
interesting to adopt. If a hundred thousand ants matter,
then also one ant matters. With the same reasoning,
also a blade of grass matters.
However, we seem to place increasingly greater value
on life forms of ever higher complexity. Few people
would hesitate to step on a worm but not many of us
would shoot and kill an elephant.
31
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
As I see it, this situation can be traced back to two
circumstances:
One circumstance is the view on spirituality and
whether nature and all that dwell there is animated
(have souls). If only human beings are animated and
animals are not, then it becomes possible for humans to
rationalize their view on animals and simply see them as
food. Even if we would accept that animals do have
souls, we would still need to eat and animals could still
be seen as food. The rationale would be to view
animals, even with a soul, as inferior to us humans. In
such a situation, the hunting, killing and preparing of
the animal would often be guided by ceremony. The
ceremony would honour the sanctity of the spiritual
aspect of the animal.
The other circumstance dates back to the huntergatherer
society of the Neolithic Period and earlier
periods. For the basic necessity of survival, people of
that period needed to make the best use of whatever
nature provided. That required an ascending scale of
values for animals. Deer would provide more protein
than mice, so for that reason a deer was more valuable
than a little mouse.
Many years ago, I participated in a week-long training
in living in a community, sharing tasks like growing
vegetables, cooking and cleaning. I remember working
in the garden when it was time to harvest some of the
produce. We began with a ceremony where we
expressed our thanks to the vegetables that we were
about to harvest. We talked about how plants, animals
and humans are part of the great cycle of life and how
nutrients move through the whole chain until finally
coming back to the soil in the ground. The actual
harvesting was done with great respect and gentle love,
handling the vegetables with care and placing them in a
wicker basket to bring into the kitchen.
When we live our lives on Earth, we learn at least the
basics of how to navigate all the ins and outs of society.
We learn how to find a job, get an apartment and open
a bank account. Through necessary interaction with
people, we learn a little about how to socialize and be
part of a social context.
32
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
Some people become very good at the navigation
process, whether it is in society in general, in the work
place or the social scene. They often have successful
careers and become popular among friends.
For me, my father was of tremendous value. With the
limited resources that were at his disposal, he did
everything he could to give me a good upbringing and
teach me the basic and important values and life skills
necessary for me to deal with life as I grew up. He was
not of any value to children in other cities or countries.
Neither was he of value on a cosmic scale. But for me,
he was the best.
I think it is important that we respect and appreciate
also that kind of very personal understanding of value.
All across this planet, there is someone who is of great
value to someone else. It may be the person sitting in
front of you, across the aisle on the train. It may be
your workmate, who you hardly know. It may be
someone who flashes by on your television screen
when you watch a journalist give a report from a city
that you have never been to.
Every human matters. Every ant matters. You matter.
Value and appreciate yourself, just for being who you
are.

MISERY (OF THE
INNER CHILD)
Symptoms of a wounded spirit
If I were to be asked “What is the most common
problem that clients bring to your clinic”, then this
would be the answer.
I imagine that most therapists, healers, nurses,
doctors, etc are familiar with this issue. Dr Sheldon
Deal DC ND of Tucson, Arizona is quoted as
describing these people as ‘heart-sink’ patients - that
is when they walk into his clinic his heart ‘sinks’. He
knows that he is dealing with a ‘wounded spirit’ - a
person who is hurting, but one in which the hurt has
become ‘septic’, has manifested into illness, and left
that person with views of the world that make them
feel that ‘life is unbearable’.
This ‘inner misery’ manifests in all levels of the human
experience. It causes physical illness, emotional
distress, psychological problems, behavioural
challenges, not least economic and social issues. The
list goes on and on and does not appear to have the
ability to change.
So...why is this? How come the world is seemingly full
of this ‘stuff’...this misery? Surely, we should be living
in a world of abundance and joy!
The promise that technology would make our lives
easier appears to be a false one...and with that goes
that elusive word... ’happiness’! Humanity is getting
sicker, and there appears to be no end in sight.
Now... the points that I have outlined above would fill
many books and indeed they already have! Many,
many books have stated that they will ‘give you the
key to happiness in your life’ but in truth, this usually
gives us false hope and certainly NOT what the title
promises.
36
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
So, we are still no nearer to realising that elusive word... happiness!
In the absence of happiness, we have the opposite ‘misery’, and as that is what we have that is what we
need to deal with.
So how do we deal with misery?
The first thing to realise is that misery can be broken down into the characteristics of a ‘wounded spirit’
- and that manifests as deep hurt. Even Google says that: “a wounded spirit comes as a result of a reaction
to negative words, events, actions, or a violation of your person or rights... that crushes you,
knocks you down and from which you cannot seem to rise.” It is something that literally ‘de-spirits’ you,
hence the term ‘dispirited’ - another word for Misery!
I would argue that the keyword in Google’s definition is ‘re-action’. What that suggests is that it is our
choice to re-act to the miserable event, and we need to re-act differently.
Now, I have said this to certain people in the past, and their ‘re-action’ is interesting. One I remember
vividly is the response “That’s easy for you to say!” That response struck me as existing on a deep level,
so deep that it is at the spiritual level - where it is too painful to think differently, and so the pain
outweighs the ability to heal. The fear of change is in control, and the fear of consequence rules.
37
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
Steve Lummer (stevelummer.com) states that: “a
wounded spirit is one that is hurting, but one in which
the hurt has festered into unbearable attitudes and
responses. A person with a wounded spirit lives in
inner misery and focuses regularly on his injuries,
whether they are emotional, physical, or spiritual.” Out
of this focus come the following ‘unbearable’ traits, or
characteristics:
1. A negative mind-set. The person with a wounded
spirit is preoccupied with past injuries. He views
incidents in life in the worst light. He sees the bad and
ignores the good. His mind is filled with woes,
suspicion, fear and an assumption of evil in the world
he inhabits.
2. Victim reasoning. With a wounded spirit, a person
views himself as a sufferer. He can even turn the kind
actions of others into additional grievances, into
added pain in his life. He is pleased when others
notice his misery and hurts more when they do not.
3. Grievance mannerisms. Out of a wounded spirit
come sighs, groans, and exclamations that draw
attention to the hurt. There is body language such as
shaking the head, throwing dark looks, facial
expressions of pain and grief, and slumped shoulders.
4. Blame tactics. A person with a wounded spirit holds
other people responsible for the misery in his life. In
truth, others may have done him wrong, but those
wrongs become the weapons of the war - the means
to blame others. The wounded spirit is able to cough
up old injuries no matter what the present subject.
The stories that are told put others in the worst light.
In addition to direct blame, there are ways of
insinuating, giving details in such a way that worse is
implied.
5. Narcissism. The thoughts and actions that one is
superior to others and that they should be noticed as
such. Attention seeking behaviour that the inner child
develops as a response to a perception that they are a
victim of neglect, through no fault of their own.
So...what can be done?
38
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
As far back as the ‘80s Dr. John Diamond MD and
others were researching ways to release the deep hurt
of the wounded spirit.
Louise Hay and Marguerite Murray researched specific
affirmations that were found to enhance meridian
energy flow. Further research has since identified
specific essential oils that strengthen the energy flow
in the meridians, and boost the immune system.
Combining these tools gives one the potential to ‘rise
above’ the ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’,
and heal the pain and misery of the wounded spirit.
For example: the governing meridian (which relates in
acupuncture to the spine and the ears) is boosted by
the affirmation “I AM supported, life supports me and I
support myself”. The application of Tangerine
essential oil on the back of the neck where it joins the
head also helps.
Correspondingly the central meridian (which relates to
the brain and eyes) is boosted by the affirmation ‘I AM
a success’, and supported by the essential oil Rose,
applied to the episternal notch (the indentation below
your throat).
The combination of an affirmation and an essential oil
is a powerful blend that uplifts the spirit and chases
away the ‘dark, miserable stuff’ we hold onto. This
leads to the question... why would we ever hold on to
such damaging thoughts?
By all accounts, those who were more attuned to
danger and who paid more attention to the bad things
around them were more likely to survive.
This evolutionary perspective suggests that this
tendency to dwell on the negative more than the
positive is simply one way that our brains have
evolved to keep us safe. This is a hard-wired
psychological phenomenon and explains why bad first
impressions can be so difficult to overcome, and why
past traumas can have such long lingering effects.
In almost any interaction, we are more likely to notice
negative things and later remember them more vividly.
It’s a very effective ‘defence mechanism’.
39
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 30
As humans, we tend to:
Remember traumatic experiences better than
positive ones.
Recall insults better than praise.
React more strongly to negative stimuli.
Think about negative things more frequently than
positive ones.
Respond more strongly to negative events than to
equally positive ones.
Psychotherapist Yolanda Renteria, LPC states: "A child
has to develop a way to protect itself from what it
deems unsafe, and the ways in which a child learns to
protect itself shapes their adult personality and
character.”
We all have an ‘inner child’, a sub-personality that
wants to have fun, laugh, and eat ice cream in the
middle of winter on the beach! However, if the child
never gets to experience fun and laughter, and instead
suffers abuse, trauma and neglect then you can see
why misery pervades the adult psyche, leading to
mental illness and physical disease.

ARE YOU FEELING FINANCIAL
PRESSURE OR JUST WANT TO MAKE
MORE MONEY?
The Easiest Side-Hussle
If you’re feeling financial pressure from the cost-of-living
crisis, you may well want to rent out a room, or cottage, or
apartment that you have on your premises or elsewhere.
Don’t worry about logistics, there are plenty of organisations
that are set up to help you do everything! There are options
galore.
To get motivated to start earning £1,000 to £1,500 per room
per month, just click on this explanatory video link.
Start off on Airbnb by clicking the link below to register your
short-term holiday rental.
You will be signing up for free and you’ll use the extra income
to fund your passions.
Once you have registered via the link below, we'll be notified
in due course, but why wait?
Action your desires quicker by sending a WhatsApp to +44
7899 545 792 with a link to your registered property so that
we can progress your success.

The Second Easiest Side-Hussle
With everything you already know, why not start a business or
consultancy?
You may have physical products to sell, or services, or
followers who would subscribe to a membership.
Do you want an all-in-one toolkit for managing appointments,
selling your services, and getting paid without all the
limitations one gets with Calendly?
You’re not selling just your time. As your one-stop-shop for
everything, bookings and sales, this system lets you add and
accept payment for both digital and physical products right on
your booking pages. We’re talking products, memberships and
subscriptions. You can even receive donations and tips, or
offer “Pay what you want”. Cha-ching!
Your clients can book with you and pay online via Stripe,
Paypal, and Square or in person and you can decide how to
collect payment (invoice them, accept cash, bank transfer,
etc.).
The multiple currency support allows you to display pricing
and accept payments in your local currency.
This app has the ability to either automate bookings into your
'open' time slots on a first-come, first served basis or you can
have it set to manual approval only to ensure that no one
books a slot in your calendar that doesn't belong there. Plus
you can block out time slots, making your calendar look busier
than you are because scarcity drives action and conversion
(tricks of the trade lol).
Multiple calendars (for team members) taking
bookings/payments simultaneously, and each can have either
your branding or their unique branding, with round-robin
scheduling.
Offering coupons for your appointments, products, and
services can be customised according to parameters such as
expiration date, quantity, minimum spend, etc.
Share “Lite”, pared-down versions of your booking pages for
those simple appointments where testimonials, FAQs, and
photos/videos just aren’t necessary (The KISS principle) .
Display countdown timers, so your visitors know exactly how
long is left until your big event.
You can embed a YouTube video, display social media links,
and provide FAQs.
Add links to drive visitors to other booking pages or an
external website.
Integrate your Zoom account for a Zoom meeting link to be
automatically generated and shared to both your calendar and
your attendees.
