THIS WEEK IN CAPE MAY JAN 3-MARCH 27 2025

Wintertime in Cape May, NJ is a time to relax and enjoy the slower pace of America's first seaside resort. If cabin fever starts to set in, you can also find some sure cures for the winter blues with activities for Presidents' Weekend and, before you know it, the daffodils and tulips will be blooming again! In the meantime, come and enjoy some of our history at a nice, leisurely pace at the Emlen Physick Estate or the Cape May Lighthouse.

Routes of Black Travel

The Green Book in Cape May and Wildwood

The Negro Motorist Green Book, later renamed the Negro Travelers’ Green

Book, was an annual guidebook that gave African American travelers essential

information about safe places to stay, dine, and obtain services while traveling

in the segregated United States during the Jim Crow era. Jim Crow laws lasted

close to 100 years until 1968, and were enforced harshly, often with violence.

The Green Book and similar publications helped keep Black Americans safe

and provided them with some measure of freedom to travel. Learn how Esso

stations created safe havens for Black motorists to fill their gas tanks, how

hotels such as the Banneker House, the Hotel Dale, and Richardson’s Hotel,

among others in Cape May, along with guest houses in Wildwood, gave Black

visitors safe spaces to relax at the seaside on holiday or for business.

Open: January 18-March 23,2025

Cape to Welcome

Trolley Tour

The best introduction to Cape May for first-timers. See some of

the most famous streets and landmarks as you learn why Cape

May is the only National Historic Landmark City and why historic

preservation is so important here. Hear about Cape May’s

natural beauty and cultural points of interest for exploring later.

Mansions by the Sea

Trolley Tour

Don’t be green with envy when you see how well the rich lived

in the early 1900s in the most elegant part of town, with its

broad streets and summer “mansions.” Cape May’s east side was

marketed as “New Cape May” at the turn of the 20th century

both to the merely wealthy and fabulously rich.

These 45-minute open-air trolley tours begin and end at the

Washington Street Mall Information Booth

PRESIDENTS’ WEEKEND

FIND A CURE FOR THE WINTER BLUES!

See what Dr. Physick and his family did to

stay warm with a visit to the EMLEN PHYSICK

ESTATE, 1048 Washington St., Cape May’s

only Victorian house museum. A guided tour

of this 1879 home will take you back in time to

Cape May’s Victorian past (see page 5). You

tells you about the whalers and farmers who

built a different sort of community than what

you see in the town’s Victorian area. You’ll

also learn about the Black residents who

thrived and the diverse community that continues

to contribute to the vibrant island life

we know and love today. (see page 61).

You can also learn about the role Cape

May played in the UNDERGROUND RAIL-

ROAD TROLLEY TOUR, on Monday, Feb. 17

at 11am. (see page 39)

Work off some of those leftover holiday

calories by climbing the 1859 CAPE MAY

LIGHTHOUSE. 199 steps will take you to the

top for a breathtaking view of the Jersey

Cape. The Lighthouse is open from 12Noon-

3pm, Feb. 14-17. (See page 6).

Get your friends or family together for

a BRUNCH & BINGO AT THE INN OF CAPE

MAY on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 9am. Enjoy a

delicious lunch at the Bellevue Tavern with

visits to Jessie Creek Winery and Natali Vineyards,

with transportation on a MAC trolley.

22

Shopping is always a good cure for the

doldrums, and our CRAFTS & COLLECTIBLES

IN WINTER brings together some of the region’s

top crafters and vendors. The show

is Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 15 & 16 from

10am-4pm at Cape May Convention Hall, 714

Beach Ave. (See page 43).

How about a visit to the spirit world?

Join psychic medium Craig McManus at the

CHANNELING DINNER. Enjoy a delicious

dinner at the Inn of Cape May on Friday, Feb.

14 at 6pm and maybe a visit with some longlost

relatives. (See page 15).

Learn about Cape May’s spirited residents

on a GHOSTS OF CAPE MAY TROL-

LEY TOUR, offered Friday through Sunday,

Feb. 14-16; see calendar for times. Craig Mc-

Manus, paranormal investigator and psychic

medium, has conducted numerous paranormal

investigations throughout Cape May and

this 30-minute evening ride features a Cape

May MAC guide who relates McManus’ findings.

(see page 53).

Be sure to visit the Carriage House at

the Physick Estate, too, where you’ll find the

CARRIAGE HOUSE MUSEUM SHOP (see

page 81) with some unique treasures for giving

(or keeping!) as well as the current exhibit

in the CARROLL GALLERY, “Routes of Black

Travel: The Green Book in Cape May and

Wildwood” Co-sponsored by Cape May’s

Center for Community Arts. (see page 10).

In between your tours, Cape May MAC

offers some free activities the whole family

can enjoy. Get to the grounds of the Physick

Estate early before your tour, and try the

PHYSICK ESTATE SCAVENGER HUNT, a free

activity in which the whole family can participate

which will introduce you to the grounds

and buildings of the estate. Another free

activity is the CAPE MAY FAMILY TREASURE

HUNT, which provides you with a map and

clues sheet to take you on a self-guided

discovery tour around town of Cape May’s

unique and delightful architecture. (See

Emlen Physick Estate

Had a wonderful tour, with friends, after Cape

May Trolley Ride, in the beautiful Emlen Physick

Mansion. Our tour guide, Joyce was terrific; very

informative & funny, and really made our tour Extra

Special! She’s been doing them for years and

as some pics from 2 years prior show, she dressed

in period clothes. Our Hot Summer made current

clothes more appropriate, but nothing was lost!

Loved the tour and would definitely recommend

it for Adults. Think young kids might not appreciate,

but, who knows!”

Cape May Lighthouse

The Cape May Lighthouse is a must-visit if you’re in the area! Climbing

to the top costs $12 for adults and $8 for children, which is well

worth it for the stunning panoramic views of Cape May, the ocean,

and surrounding marshlands. The climb is 199 steps, but it’s fairly easy

with places to rest along the way. The staff is friendly and provides

great information about the history of the lighthouse, which was built

in 1859. Once you reach the top, the view is breathtaking, especially

on a clear day! The lighthouse is located within Cape May Point State

Park, so you can combine your visit with a walk along the trails or some

birdwatching. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Cape May!”

Emlen Physick Estate

It was such a joy to be able to sit in an open trolley and be able to see so many

beautiful houses and cottages that are so wonderfully maintained in Cape May.

The extended trolley to the Emlen Physick estate was a wonderful surprise. The

architecture of the house was done inside and out by Frank Furness having ties

and influences to Frank Lloyd Wright. An added feature was how the manor

was “saved” by determined Cape May citizens from being torn down. I was

extremely impressed by the owner, Dr. Physick himself how he created such

a rich and great legacy. He was ahead of his time and a true animal lover as

seen through photographs from the tour. All in the tour group are wonderful,

knowledgeable and helpful. This is a Cape May must see. And please donate

for they had to bring the house back to life and are still working on it.”

All the experience was wonderful. The Cape May Lighthouse is very nice, easy to

climb, enough space in stairs and the view is amazing. The people who work there

are very nice, too. Outside, there’s a beautiful nature preserve with excellent trails to

walk around and enjoy nature....and the beach right there. All in one package. Amazing

It’s getting hot in here!

Cape May MAC is embarking on a capital improvement

Interesting place to visit, rich with historical facts about and influences of the

Victorian era on our current culture, as explained by the tour guide. If you’ve

taken for granted (like me) the history of the ubiquitous Christmas Tree during

the Holidays & how it became such an icon of American Christmas tradition,

here is a place where one can learn it. I saw it as part of a trolley tour in

the evening, showcasing Victorian homes & their Christmas decor. And part

of the trolley tour includes a guided tour of the home’s interior. However, I

recommend seeing it in the day as well (drive-by is OK).”

The roots of Cape Island and the surrounding area’s economy are in whaling and
