AUST Hosts the 32 nd Conference of the
Arab Association of Collegiate Registrars
and Admission Officers (Arab ACRAO)
President Sakr receiving the Association’s crest from Mr. Dakhil
in the presence of H.E. El-Khoury and Provost Haidar
For five days, all eyes were on Beirut, and for five days all eyes were
riveted on AUST and the 32nd Conference of the Arab Association of
Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers (Arab ACRAO). Beirut
was the site and AUST was the host for 85 universities from 15 Arab
countries. Two hundred and three representatives met and discussed
matters related to college admission and registration (…and beyond)
in an atmosphere of academic earnestness and curiosity embellished
by Lebanese (and AUST’s) hospitality.
The Arab delegates began arriving in Beirut Airport on Friday, March
24, 2012, and were all present by 7:00 pm of March 25 when a
welcome reception was thrown in their honor in the ballroom of Le
Commodore Hotel. Participants were picked up from the airport, and
were distributed over four hotels in the Hamra District: Le Commodore,
The Coral Suites Hotel, Lavendar Hotel and Hotel Napoleon.
At 10:00am of Monday 26th of March, the official opening ceremony
took place under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Nazem El Khoury –Minister
of the Environment – who has logged close to 35 years in the service
of higher education institutions in Lebanon as member of the Board of
Trustees of some of the most renowned universities and educational
associations in Lebanon. In addition to the speech of H.E. El Khoury
who touched on current issues facing higher education in Lebanon,
there were speeches by AUST President, Hiam Sakr, Provost Nabeel
Haidar and the General Secretary of Arab ACRAO, Mr. Mussaed
Dakhil. The President of AUST hosted a lunch for the conferees on
Monday and wished them a good stay in Lebanon as well as
successful deliberations.
Tuesday and Wednesday (27th and 28th of March) were consecrated
for reading and discussing close to thirty papers out of which four were
H.E. El-Khoury giving his speech
delivered by AUST faculty members – Dr. Ziad Haddad, Dr. Ziad Abu
Faraj, Dr. Edgard Rizk and Mr. Fadi Al Hakim. The papers were not
restricted to the topics of admissions and registration, but have also
dealt with various other issues relating to academic life such as working
while studying, international exchange, the relationship between the
private and the public sector in higher education, accreditation …
AUST invited the conferees to a dinner on March 28th at which
Lebanese food and good time left a memorable impression in the Arab
guests (as per their testimony).
Thursday 29th saw the end of the conference, and plans were laid out
for the 33rd Arab ACRAO Conference which shall be held in
Alexandria, Egypt in 2013.
By all counts, the 32nd conference of Arab ACRAO, hosted by AUST,
was a smashing success. Apart from the fact that this was the best
attended conference, the topics enjoyed a diversity that left everyone
with something to benefit from.
Undoubtedly, however, the organization and the support (and the very
hard work) that the AUST staff provided were the crucial factors in the
success of the event. The staff worked with patience and diligence for
long hours with the goal of reflecting AUST as a serious and
professional university. Their efforts succeeded …and they succeeded
handsomely.
Finally, the General Secretary of Arab ACRAO offered the
Association’s crest to H.E. Minister Nazem El Khoury, President Sakr,
and Provost Nabeel Haidar, and to each person who delivered a paper
in the meetings.
Crests are beautiful and fine, but what is more beautiful and
meaningful is that AUST did it well and excelled in it.
advantages over analog communication systems, in term of error minimization, and
distances of transmission enhancement. However, two of these systems, the Pulse
Coded Modulation and Linear Delta Modulation, still have some weaknesses that limit
their advantages; these limitations negatively affect the communication process causing
quantization error, slope overload distortion and granular noise. On the other hand,
A Seminar on Text Mining and Arabic Natural Language
Processing at AUST
The Department of Computer Science at AUST along with
the IEEE Computer Society - Lebanon Chapter hosted a
seminar entitled: “Reducing Data Sparsity in the Context of
Arabic Text Mining as Applied to the Automatic Classification
of Arabic Documents”.
The objective of this seminar is to shed some light on the
domain of Text Mining and Arabic Natural Language
Processing (NLP). It offered, as well, a comparative study
between four feature types: words in their original form,
lemmas, roots, and character level n-grams; it showed how
each affects the performance of the classification model.
Dr. Aziz M. Barbar, Chairperson of the Department of
Computer Science at AUST and Chair of the IEEE Computer
Society - Lebanon Chapter introduced the Guest Speaker,
Dr. Saeed Raheel, and talked about the growing need for
Data Mining, particularly Arabic Text Mining. Dr. Raheel, a
In its campaign to raise awareness of healthy living, the Administration of AUST
Zahlé hosted Dr. Mansour Khouri to give a lecture on obesity: causes and effects.
About 50 students, instructors and staff attended. Dr. Roger Achkar, the
Academic Coordinator of AUST- Zahlé welcomed all and introduced the speaker.
Then, Dr. Khouri proceeded with a power point presentation in which he focused
on bad nutritional and eating habits which contribute to obesity. Dr. Khouri
emphasized the fact that changing lifestyles is the sure means to avoid obesity
and its medical consequences; it is not an issue of dieting. The focal point of his
message was that people should devote their attention to living healthy and not
to losing weight.
Dr. Khouri giving his presentation in the presence of Dr. Achkar
Computer Science researcher in ‘Machine Learning’ and ‘Text
Mining’ started the seminar by clarifying that the Arabic
language is a highly flexional and morphologically very rich
language. It presents serious challenges to the process of
text mining that renders building an effective classification
model a tedious task. One key element to building such a
successful model is finding the best feature form. “If we are
to use full-form words then the system will suffer from the
negative effects of data sparsity. To overcome such a
problem, it is crucial to reduce full-form words by either
applying a morphological analysis or using statistical ngrams.
Some people use roots or lemmas which, they say,
are able to overcome problems with the inflections that do
not appear in other languages in that fashion. Others prefer
to use character-level n-grams since n-grams are simpler to
implement, language independent, and produce satisfactory
results” Dr. Raheel said.
The seminar ended with Q&A session where students
interacted with the speaker and asked several questions
pertaining to mobile environment and text mining.
Dr. Raheel lecturing on text mining
4. How to establish a common national agenda with strategic outlook for the betterment of social services
5. How to establish a common ground for developing the public and the private sectors.
6. How to introduce reform to the Lebanese Commercial Laws
The aforementioned topics were discussed extensively by the attendees in a series of forums in which
the points of view were discussed with fervor and interest.
Are Cola Companies Behaving Like
Cigarette Companies?
The latest report by Beverage Digest, which measures the
Carbonated Soft Drinks market size in the U.S., points to
declining soda consumption in the U.S. in the coming years.
In terms of per capita consumption, the figure decline to 714
eight-ounce servings in 2011, compared to 728 in 2010.
Coca-Cola Co and PepsiCo both lost market share while
Dr. Pepper Snapple’s market share remained flat. With
volumes of traditional CSDs declining for the seventh
consecutive year, soft drink companies have been exhibiting
characteristics similar to tobacco companies in the U.S.
Internationally (especially in developing countries),
however, it is a different story altogether as consumption
per capita is low, regulations are lax and there isn’t enough
consumer awareness regarding health repercussions due
to excessive soda consumption. So, there is plenty of
scope to expand in terms of cola consumption.
1) Lower Volumes, Higher Retail
Tobacco companies have come to accept that the cigarette
volumes are going to decline in the U.S. and hence are left
with no option but to increase the prices periodically to
make up for declining volumes. The major tobacco
companies increased the prices of their cigarettes twice in
2011. Although cola companies cannot afford to increase
the prices as aggressively as tobacco companies since
colas are not nearly as addictive as cigarettes, the value of
retail sales has been creeping up in spite of declining cola
volumes. Total retail sales of CSDs rose 2% to $75.7 billion
in 2011 from the previous year. Similarly, retail sales
increased 0.4% over the previous year in 2010. The
increasing retail sales can be partially attributed to
aggressive promotion of energy drinks which usually have
a higher retail price than traditional colas.
This fact highlights how the strategies of cola companies
have evolved over the years. Instead of playing the
volumes game, cola companies are promoting drinks
which have higher margins. The trade-off between
volumes and prices is often a tricky one to solve. However,
if on reducing the prices, there isn’t enough sufficient
volume growth, then it makes sense for the companies to
increase the prices periodically.
2) Promoting Alternatives
Cigarette companies are increasingly looking for
alternatives such as smokeless tobacco products for future
growth. These are usually perceived to be less harmful
than smokeless tobacco products and thus attract lower
excise duty. Similarly, cola companies have been
aggressively promoting non-carbonated drinks such as
juices, Ready-to-Drink teas, water mixers etc. The overall
LRB (Liquid Refreshment Beverage) size which combines
CSDs as well Non-CSDs grew 0.8% in 2011. Coca Cola
Co is investing $99 million in its Auburndale plant in 2012
to expand production of its ‘Simply’ brand of products.
Similarly, PepsiCo along with Germany’s Theo Müller
Gmbh are investing more than $200 million to enter the
U.S. dairy market.
3) Fighting Legislation
In a recent article, we talked about how cola companies
spend a great deal on lobbying to ensure any proposed
soda taxes that could adversely affect their business are
killed off. As per recent estimates, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola
Co and the American Beverage Association have spent a
staggering $70 million on lobbying.
Similarly, tobacco companies are estimated to having
spend $16 million on lobbying in 2011. [2] Tobacco
companies are also targets of multiple litigation
simultaneously. Part of the reason why these industries
attract high taxation is because the fiscal deficit of the
government is in a mess and imposing taxes on these
industries ensures higher revenue collection in the name
of political mileage.
Cola companies won’t be hesitant to increase the prices
periodically (although certainly not as aggressively as
cigarette companies) especially since the cost of sales
continues to rise. Soft drink companies will also continue
to innovate/launch new products to lure customers to
increase consumption.
Horoscope
AREAS (Mar 21-Apr 19)
Today a close friend who has let down
her boundaries will have a dilemma.
Though you have several axes to grind
with her, you should not let this be a factor. If she can
count on you, you will get closure.
E-BAR (Sep 23-Oct 22)
Today you will intersect a radical from class, a tan
gent of average height. He will be a cute guy, but
obtuse. Help him by reading his abstract, so he
can get his degree and reach his proper rank.
TORUS (Apr 20-May 20)
Today you will be in your prime. A clique of
friends will give you a ring and hold an
enjoyable function. You will feel connected
to this circle of friends, and will be the
center of attention.
SCORE-PI-O (Oct 23 - Nov 21)
You have reached a critical point in your life.
You are on edge and have about reached
your limit. This minor identity crisis has kept
you in knots for some time. Seek a group of solid friends
to set things right.
M and I (May 21-Jun 21)
Today you will get a visit from an ex, though
you won't know why. The jerk is still square,
a real number, quite a character. He will
feed you a line about being a pair again, and this will
cause an argument, making you tensor and tensor.
SLANTED-AREAS (Nov 22-Dec 21)
Today you should stay in bed and catch
some Z's. Stay horizontal and sleep like a
log. This complete lack of activity will mean a
minimum of stress, but it is also a product of the power
you have.
ANSWER (Jun 22-Jul 22)
Don't commute today. If you go by plane,
the floor will drop out. If your mode is by
car, you will hit a field of trees in the
median. Even walking on your own digits will result in a
funeral plot.
CAPRI-CHORD (Dec 22-Jan 19)
This period of your life will be similar to one
year ago, when your life was simple and
ordered. It is integral that you be careful, lest
you do commit an improper error. Look for a
sign, but stick to your roots.
E-O (Jul 23-Aug 22)
Today life will throw you a curve. You and a
loved one will diverge, and the distance will feel
empty. Though you will see her less, her
existence proves your perfect friendship is in a
separate category. Don't let it make a difference.
A-SQUARY-PLUS (Jan 20-Feb 18)
Keep an open mind today. Stop projecting and
admit the magnitude of your problems for a
second. If you are analytic, the origin of your
exact difficulty will soon be clear, and your
troubles will decrease by half.
ERGO (Aug 23-Sep 22)
On the surface, today will seem like an irrational
day, continuously full of problems. The constant
chaos will be far from ideal. But the day will be
less negative and more normal than it first
appears. Stay to your regular routine and minimize
variation.
PI-CEES (Feb 19-Mar 20)
Today will be an odd day. You will face many
complex problems, all equally frustrating. But
you will maximize your joy by finding value in all
of them, and it will turn out to be a fine day.
