What comes to mind

when you hear the word

comfort? How does it

make you feel? For me,

comfort is slipping into

something cozy—fluffy slippers, soft sweats—

and curling up on the couch with a warm cup

of tea, a good book, and a blanket. It’s also

the presence of my family—my husband, my

daughters, my lifelong friends—whose love

and companionship make me feel safe, at

ease, and able to fully be myself. It’s a feeling

we all crave, especially in the colder months,

when the world outside feels a little less

inviting and the temps are biting.

And then, of course, there’s comfort food,

which is the ultimate expression of warmth, nostalgia, and indulgence. Creamy,

caloric, and oh-so satisfying, it’s the cuisine that

fills you up both physically and emotionally. If,

Comfort is a

like me, comfort food’s your favorite food, then

beautiful thing, you won’t want to miss this month’s feature, “Take

but sometimes it Comfort.” Turn to page 56 for 25 of the region’s

makes us forget richest, most decadent meals, from savory mac

the beauty of and cheese to ooey-gooey grilled cheese, plus

the unknown. homemade chicken pot pie, tender pot roast, and

steaming bowls of gumbo and goulash.

—Unknown

Yet, like most things in life, comfort—and

comfort food—is best enjoyed in moderation, so

remember to balance that buttery bliss with some fruits, veggies, and wholegrain

goodness! In “Lean Cuisine” (page 80), we introduce you to a handful of

nutritious, delicious entrées that go beyond beet salads and tofu stir-fries.

If your relationships and routines are also feeling a bit too comfortable and

complacent (comfort doesn’t just relate to food, after all!), then I suggest you step

outside your comfort zone and do something different. Though not always easy,

it’s a guaranteed way to grow, build self-esteem, and make the mundane a bit

more magical.

Seeking some simple ways to break free from the familiar? This month’s

magazine is a prime place to start! On page 16, Nelly Kislyanka encourages you

to “Just Try It!” whether it’s downward dogging, dancing, acting, or the ancient

art of glassblowing; in “Hot Plates” (page 84), Caitlin Emmett shares nine newto-the-area

(and likely new-to-you) eateries that are worth exploring; and in

“Live Long & Prosper” (page 36), Caroline Kings discusses blue zone secrets—

easily adoptable habits that help promote a happier, healthier, century-long

life. Feeling extra adventurous? Why not order a dish you’ve never tried before?

Roseville’s Everest Chilli Pepper (page 76) serves up many unfamiliar (to the

average American) but unforgettable flavors from afar, making it the perfect

place to expand your culinary horizons.

Happy reading and happy new year! May it be filled with comfort and the

courage to step slightly beyond it.

Just Try It!

The

by NELLY KISLYANKA

As you set goals for 2025, may we suggest

something? Step out of your comfort zone and try

new things. Challenging yourself and embracing

discomfort is essential to personal growth and

creating a more resilient, adaptable you; not to

mention, what you learn from navigating new

experiences translates to all areas of your life. Here

are 10 experiences found 'round town that will add

some serious spice to your life.

Folsom Lake College

Get centered with yoga. A regular

yoga practice reduces stress, improves

cognitive skills, and increases flexibility,

strength, and balance. We don’t know

about you, but those sound like worthy

pursuits. Feel alive and experience joy—

while also reconnecting with yourself

and relaxing—at Yoga Nyla,

Folsom’s hub for hot power

vinyasa and yin yoga. With

Take a college class. Curiosity is a virtue

easily lost in the trenches of the everyday.

However, research shows that a thirst

for knowledge is associated with higher

levels of positive emotions, lower anxiety,

and more satisfaction with life. Plutarch

said, “The mind is not a vessel to be

filled, but a fire to be kindled.” Stoke your

inquisitiveness by signing up for a college

class at one of the Folsom Lake College

or Sierra College campuses across

our region. Whether you’re passionate

about the arts, artificial intelligence,

geography, geology, science, social justice,

or something else, there’s a class for all.

Explore the arts. Every two months,

Blue Line Arts in Roseville hosts adult

workshops, allowing grownups of any skill

level—even those “don’t know how to

draw a stick figure”—to explore a different

art medium. The goal is to foster creativity

and enjoy the process without focusing

on the result. Workshops are also a fun

way to socialize and connect with the

community; plus, they’re free for firsttime

guests. Registration is required. 405

why not challenge yourself to become

cultures, but studies show being bilingual

can boost memory, improve multitasking

skills, and even delay cognitive aging.

The Murer House Foundation provides

get to know

— Day in the Life —

Jamie Whitmore

by CAROLINE KINGS

On the surface, Jamie Whitmore

is a sporty mom who does

typical mom things. Dig a little

deeper, however, and there’s a lot more

to this local woman. She’s followed her

childhood dreams, had huge professional

sporting success (former American

triathlete turned para-cyclist), and faced

major health obstacles. She’s exuberant

when we speak and full of life. During our

interview she says, “Sometimes when you

can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel,

you need to become the light,” and I well

believe that of her.

Please tell us about a typical day.

I get up, train, and then I do mom

things; I have twin sons, a stepson, and a

stepdaughter who’s only 22 days younger

than the twins, so it's like having triplets.

After making lunches, driving them to

school, etc., I spend the day on podcasts

or speaking engagements on Zoom or

throughout the country, talking to schools

and corporations. I’m also the Athletes'

Advisory Council (AAC) rep for my paracycling

team, so I do a lot of interacting

with athletes to ensure their voices are being

heard. I train and work around my kids’

sports schedules, just as my parents did, and

I also volunteer my time at a running club.

How did you discover running and

triathlon in particular?

An avid-runner friend in eighth grade

suggested I run a mile, and it turned out

I was pretty good at it! I put everything

into running and decided I wanted to be

professional athlete. I grew up watching

football and baseball, the Olympics,

my dad always had sports on TV, and I

thought, ‘Man, that is so cool!’ I would see

players thanking God in an interview—the

same players who were showboating after

making a touchdown. It bothered me.

I wanted to be a pro in a sport because

then I could truly thank God and make

it about him and not me. I ran in college,

then heard of triathlon; after I graduated,

I told my dad I'd rather try that than get a

job! I had to make a lot of sacrifices, but

I turned professional with XTERRA and

mountain biking in 2001.

You went on to win 37 triathlon

events and were the XTERRA

World Champion in 2004 before

you discovered you had cancer.

Yes, it was October and the 2007 World

Championships. I knew something was

wrong in the race, so vividly. I remember

feeling a tingling in my left leg. I exited

the water like normal, then took off on my

bike, and about three miles into the ride,

my left leg started cramping. It felt odd.

Somehow, I shuffled my way to third place,

but that night I still felt a weird tingling in

my left hamstring. I took time off, as usual,

and when I started up again, the tightness

was so severe it was impossible to run. I

could still bike and swim, however, so

continued to do that. Then January came

around, and I couldn't even do things like

touch my toes because the hamstring

was so tight.

The doctors thought it was an ovarian

cyst at first, and then they started to

describe it as a “mass.” I was in a lot of

pain, waking-up-screaming-in-the-night

pain, and after a biopsy was left with a

Foley bag. No one was calling it cancer

until after the tumor was removed,

and then they started to discuss

chemotherapy with me. I was so scared

at that point—I had been planning a

season of competing—and it was like

a candle being snuffed out. I couldn’t

breathe. My dad turned to me and said,

‘You just need a mustard seed of faith,

and you can move a mountain, like it

says in the Bible.’ And that was the flick

of a switch that started my journey of

knowing that this was happening to me

for a reason, and it wasn't the end; that I

had so much more, and that this was just

part of my story, part of my journey. I was

going to return to racing.

The tumor damaged your thigh

and glute, severely impacting your

ability to walk.

I had physical therapy and Bob

Babbitt from the Challenged Athletes

Foundation (for athletes with

disabilities) called my husband at the

time and said, ‘Tell Jamie there's always

the Paralympics.’ It felt like everything

I had achieved and was wanting to still

achieve was gone. I realized that for me

to get back on a bike again, I needed to

learn to walk. So, I started walking, and

then the cancer came back.

Not only did the cancer return, but

you contracted sepsis and discovered

you were pregnant with twins.

So, at this point, I thought, ‘Okay, God, I

will stop trying to ride the bike myself.’

I'm just going to live life, and when you're

ready to let me ride a bike again, I’ll ride

a bike. There were many obstacles; when

I found out I was pregnant, I thought ‘I'm

definitely not riding now.’

Bottom photo by Casey Gibson. Top photo by Lisa Booko.

In 2011, you rode a bike for the first

time after the diagnosis.

I had to make quite a few adaptations

to the bike and my technique, but I

started racing again. Some of the races

had me in tears, but in 2012 I raced

in the Leadville Trail 100 MTB against

able-bodied competitors and finished in

under 12 hours. It was one of the hardest

races I’ve ever done in my life!

In 2013, I became a para-cyclist and

was winning World Championship

jerseys—all on my mission to get to the

Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. I ended up

earned the top ranking in 2016 to qualify

for the games.

Here I am, eight years [in remission],

finally achieving my six-year-old dream.

It wasn’t the Olympics, but it was so

much harder, and I relish the fact that it

was such a hard journey, because I live

for taking the hard road.

Spotlight on

Kathleen Bartl

by JENNIFER MARAGONI

People can’t help but smile when

they spot one of Kathleen Bartl’s

whimsical clay “kritters”—be it

a mouse with oversized ears, a

dog with a large snout, or a zebra wearing

a vest. And for Bartl, a smile is the greatest

compliment she could receive. “I know I’ve

done my job when someone tells me, ‘They

just make me smile,’” she says.

Based in Lincoln, Bartl (kathleenbartlclay.

com) has always been an artist. As a child, she

was encouraged to draw what she saw, such

as seals at the ocean or squirrels climbing

in the redwoods. “My brain had the ability to

see, remember, and guide my hand to draw

exactly what I saw,” she recalls. So, for 45 years,

Bartl created drawings that she describes as

“precise, exacting, and void of color.”

However, a serious brain injury left her

without the inherent connection from her

eyes to her hand—and without a way to

express herself artistically. After a years-long

quest to find a new medium, she discovered

clay—and the joy of spontaneity and

imagination.

“Building clay by hand allowed me to

create my animals my own way and not

nature’s way anymore,” she explains. “The

medium allowed me to create instead of copy.

Finally, my interpretation became very fun

and colorful.”

How did you get your start as an artist?

I come from a family of artists. My brother

and I never knew a home without marking

pens, [art] paper, and every medium or tool

waiting for us to create. Through school,

science projects and [book] reports were

| arts & culture |

I’m Cold Elephant Goat

always a reason to go all out with art as

the subject, and science or history as the

footnote.

What do you enjoy about working

with clay?

Clay can be stretched, flattened, and

rounded to my heart’s content. The shape

and character of each animal is unlimited

because clay allows me to join, cut, and build

in so many different ways. There are endless

techniques in hand building with clay.

What is it about animals that captures

your heart?

Animals are so innocent. They are who

they are based on how they have lived. I

see all animals as creatures who deserve

a loving home guarded by someone who

cares about them—and that someone

should be me, even if they live in the

forest or ocean. I see their softness,

their devotion, and their feelings about

everything. They have so much to say and

do. My sadness is they have no words or

opposable thumbs. This inability always

makes me feel they need me. In turn, they

fill my heart.

Tell us about your process. How do you

approach each piece?

I grab a hunk of clay and go to work. I never

go into my studio with any preconceived

ideas. I start by rolling a slab, pinching a

roundish ball, and building a basic body

shape with no height. Then I’m ready to

add pieces of clay to the head shape. As

their face begins to emerge, I start to see

an animal evolving. With the addition of

arms, legs, and facial bone shapes, I start to

know who my animal is. A few days of this

and a rabbit, goat, or other animal almost

always evolves. I’ve never created an animal

without developing a narrative along the

way. I love to create eyes that show fear

or joy, head tilts that display curiosity or

shyness, and a body position that defines

strength or vulnerability.

You often exaggerate a particular

feature. Why?

Who my animal becomes is always based

on how their most important feature is

shaped. As their narrative grows within

me, this feature—very tall or bended

ears for a rabbit, big horns on a goat, or

large feet on a duck—highlights their

personality. Their unusual features help

tell their story. A rabbit with eyes looking

down and small ears bent sideways might

be sad or just shy. A goat with sweet eyes

but very large horns can be a tough goat

with a heart of gold. Each exaggerated

feature defines my animal.

What do you hope viewers experience

through your art?

All I ever want is for them to stand, look,

and walk away feeling full of emotion.

I’ve met my goal when a viewer leaves

knowing they have seen an inanimate

ceramic animal tell them something—who

they are and how they feel right then—

whether it’s joy, sadness, or concern.

Where can people see your work?

In addition to my website and

Instagram (@kathleen.bartl), I show

regularly at Blue Line Arts in Roseville,

Sacramento Fine Arts Center, Elk Grove

Fine Arts Center, Art League of Lincoln,

and other Sacramento-area galleries.

People in the Mediterranean region have

been found, in many scientific studies,

to live long, healthy lives. And though it

may be thousands of miles away, we can

introduce some of their healthy habits into

our routines here at home.

“Their diet—which emphasizes

including fresh fruits and vegetables

(specifically non-starchy vegetables), nuts,

seeds, legumes, whole grains, and hearthealthy

fats such as olive oil and fatty fish;

a low to moderate consumption of dairy,

eggs, and poultry; and limiting red meats,

refined sugars, sugar-sweetened beverages,

heavily refined grains, and processed

meats—can reduce the risk of developing

multiple chronic diseases and increase

life expectancy,” says Andrea Hirsbrunner,

an oncology dietician at Marshall Cancer

Resource Center.

“It’s actually a lifestyle as well,”

Hirsbrunner continues. “There’s a greater

by CAROLINE KINGS

emphasis on walking and other physical

activities as part of daily living. Meals are

frequently social events where people [dine]

with others and without the distractions of

screens.”

Movement Matters

They say that “sitting is the new smoking,”

so take that as your motivation to move. We

exist in an age of sitting, due to work, travel,

and binge-watching shows, but why is that

so bad for us?

Rebecca Boxer, MD, MS, clinical

professor of internal medicine and

endowed chair in healthy aging and

geriatrics at UC Davis, tells me: “Movement

is good for us because it exercises our

cardiovascular system, brain health, and

blood vessels, but it also helps our mood,

combating depression, anxiety, and stress;

and reducing those psychological issues

help people to stay healthier longer.”

Don’t be overwhelmed by exercise

guidelines, Boxer advises. “Rather than

focusing on exercise, focus on reducing

how sedentary you are.” Some common

barriers to moving are:

Top photo © bit24 - stock.adobe.com. Bottom photo © Davide Angelini - stock.adobe.com.

• Frailty can limit movement, but “move

at a level that suits you; use a walker,

try to do things for yourself, and move

around the house.”

• Injuries can lead to a decrease in

physical activity. “Have a plan for

recovery and to regain your level

of activity and, maybe, beyond. Just

because the pain goes away doesn’t

mean that you’re done. You must work

on regaining your activity levels.”

• Medications can make you feel tired

or lethargic and, therefore, inactive.

Discuss this with your doctor. “A number

of common drugs are problematic;

reviewing them with your doctor can be

really helpful.”

Sleep Is Essential

As well as a great diet, socializing regularly,

and walking more, many countries,

including those around the Mediterranean,

also enjoy a siesta, a little nap in the

afternoon. These days, people all over the

world love resting during the day. “I can nap

anywhere! It gives me the boost of energy I

need to make it through the rest of the day,”

Jennifer Slade of Folsom tells me. Though

Steve Patching, MD, at Dignity Health

doesn’t recommend a nap if you have

trouble sleeping at night, he does advocate

healthy sleep patterns. “Do whatever you

can to get the best sleep possible at night;

one night of bad sleep can throw off your

blood sugar, destroy your energy, increase

cravings, and have a whole host of other

issues on your physical and mental health.

[Quality] sleep is one of the most important

things we can do for our health.”

Strong Relationships,

Strong Health

You may not have considered how

interactions with others can impact

your health. Difficult relationships are

stressors and can be incredibly taxing to

your mind and body, ultimately having a

detrimental effect on your well-being.

Jennifer Moffat, LMFT, explains the

science behind positive, healthy, non-toxic

relationships. “I know every relationship

encounters stressful situations at one

time or another, perhaps even daily, but

when people are in a fight-or-flight state

all the time, individuals run the risk of

living with high levels of cortisol in their

bodies. Cortisol is a necessary hormone,

but too much can wreak havoc, derailing

your most important bodily functions and

leading to numerous health problems:

anxiety, depression, headaches, heart

disease, weight gain, and trouble sleeping.”

As a PACT (psychobiological approach

to couple’s therapy) therapist, Moffat

advises that we should treat each other

with care, respect, and fairness, creating

safe, secure, and supportive environments

to help us live as long as possible.

Be a Social Butterfly

“We push [socializing] very hard in older

adults to avoid social isolation,” says

Boxer. She advocates being active in

groups, as being sociable is imperative.

It’s another topic that crops up time and

time again as a mood booster and is

critical for brain health.

Many people I spoke to brought up how

joining groups has helped them feel better

about themselves and life in general. “I

joined a local men’s outdoor workout group

that doubles as a men’s leadership group. We

exercise every day at 5:15 a.m., rain or shine.

I’ve met some of the best dudes, and the

group has completely changed my life,” a

Folsom resident shares with me.

Kindness Counts

To make these lifestyle changes, you

need to give yourself more time; maybe

that’s saying no to plans to make time for

movement, prepare a nourishing meal, or

go to bed on time. That’s self-care.

And that’s more than okay, says Ingrid

Grove, MD, of Thrive Primary Care. Grove

takes it further, asking you to be gentle

with yourself and ensuring your internal

narrative is kind. “It goes back to the

mind-body connection in that there’s a

physiological experience that occurs when

we have an uncomfortable emotion.” Think

of anxiety in your mind, for example,

which might translate to butterflies or

discomfort in your stomach. “Don’t hurry

and be impatient; take time. Don’t feel

shame if you can’t meditate or don’t make

the gym this week. Stop this self-punishing

cycle; instead, press pause and tune into

yourself: mind, body and spirit.”

I hope you paused to read this piece.

What might you take away from it? A small

change could make a big difference.

Dr. Bogard has a long history in the health field. From

an RN to a nurse anesthetist to an anesthesiologist, she

spent almost 40 years in the operating room. She was

exposed to critical care, trauma, obstetrics, lots of on

call hours and sleepless nights. As she entered her 50's

she found her own health starting to decline and sought

out a healthy aging physician. After experiencing the

benefits she sought out the fellowship of regenerative

and healthy aging through the American Academy of

Anti-Aging Medicine.

She opened an office in 2014 and continues to grow

and expand her knowledge into this evolving field of

medicine. Rather than prescribing medications and

bandaging diseases she looks for the "root causes" and

integrates each system in the body together. She also

looks at environmental, genetic and lifestyle factors

which result in "dis-ease". Her continued and expanding

practice utilizes bioidentical hormone replacement,

The Heat is On

The biggest trend I’m seeing in the

fitness industry is “more workout,

less time!” People everywhere—

parents in particular—are working

hard to be as productive as possible

while also staying fit and healthy.

Harnessing the power of infrared

heat—which has been scientifically

proven to reduce inflammation,

detoxify your body, improve

circulation, boost metabolism,

increase calorie burn, and so

much more—and combining it

with dynamic workouts (both HIIT

and isometric) with around-theclock

availability ensures maximum

exercise efficiency in minimal time.

ASK THE

EXPERT

by CAITLIN EMMETT

Q: WHAT MAKES

WOOD-FIRED PIZZA SO

DIFFERENT/SPECIAL?

A: The unique style of cooking

in a wood-fired oven creates the

perfect pizza. Wood-fired pizza

cooking is done at an extremely

high temperature, which creates

a distinctively crunchy outer crust

while maintaining a soft inside you

simply can’t get using other cooking

methods. The type of wood used

is also important; in our area, we’re

blessed with an abundance of oak,

which makes for a tasty, smoky

flavor profile. The pizza also cooks

extremely fast, which is a bonus!

What’s Trending?

by KOURTNEY JASON

2025 DESIGN FORECAST

Home design trends are

constantly evolving, reflecting

changes in lifestyle, technology,

and personal values. As we

kick off 2025, the spotlight is

on spaces that not only look

stunning but also enhance wellbeing

and sustainability. To

uncover the freshest ideas set

to define kitchens, bathrooms,

backyards, and beyond, we

asked Jenny Levitsky, owner and

designer of Ultimate Designs

(ultimatedesignkitchens.com);

and Cathy Tonks, owner and lead

designer of Designs With You

in Mind (designswithyouinmind.

net), for their expert insights on

what they predict will be making

waves in home design this year.

KITCHENS

According to Levitsky, “functionality

continues to be key, especially

in kitchens, so utilizing modern

elements like FreePower—which

is installed in countertops and

charges multiple devices all at once,

removing the need for messy plugs

and wires—is key.” Adding energyefficient

appliances and automated

lighting systems are also a “smart”

investment.

Speaking of lighting, it can make

or break a kitchen. For a warm,

stylish glow, Levitsky recommends

adding pendants made of natural

fibers, rattan, or wood with a soft

warm hue; and then incorporating

LED-recessed can lighting (on

dimmers), undercabinet lighting,

and toe kick lighting.

BATHROOMS

When it comes to restrooms, spalike

retreats in neutral palettes with

earthy tones and textured surfaces

are all the rage, says Levitsky. She’s

also seeing freestanding tubs

replacing Roman deck tubs and

curbless and open showers with

large format tiles (in natural stone

or concrete finishes) alongside

subtle metallic accents and brass or

black finishes.

With vanities, docking drawers

for hair and shaving devices,

along with wireless charging

technology (like FreePower), keeps

things clutter-free. “For the vanities

themselves, fluted or reeded wood

is popular and adds furniturestyle

elements to your personal

sanctuary while also creating a

warm, minimalist feel. Tiling the

whole wall behind a vanity adds

texture, while LED-lit mirrors with

textural sconces finish the look,”

Levitsky says. Most importantly, she

reminds homeowners to bring a

bit of the outside in, via plants or a

cozy chair.

OUTDOORS

Designers are focusing on natureintegrated

living spaces that can

be utilized year-round. “Flexible

areas for entertaining, cooking,

gardening, and relaxing and the

use of biophilic design remains

strong,” Levitsky shares. This can

include native plants, living walls,

water features, natural lighting,

sustainable hardwoods, composite

decking, concrete pavers, and

natural solar lighting to ensure

eco-conscious illumination.

FURNITURE

Despite everything being very

angular in design for some time

now, Tonks says curves are making

a comeback; she first saw the trend

emerge in barrel arches and more

recently in furnishings. “I love the

soft edges that curves create and

how welcoming they make a space

feel,” she shares.

Another trend Tonks has her

eyes on? Caster chairs, which

have small wheels attached to

the bottom of their legs, allowing for ease

of movement. “A high-quality one even has

options for different casters, depending on the

rolling surface,” she says.

FABRICS & MATERIALS

Both designers agree that texture continues to

be cool. “Texture remains a top trend, especially

bouclé as well as faux and real mohair. These

fabrics add layers to your space to give it great

dimension and warmth,” Tonks says.

In the kitchen, “texture over shine

is starting to dominate, with matte and

textured surfaces replacing glossy finishes.

Quartzite, natural stone, porcelain, and

quartz now have many leathered and

suede finishes to achieve this effect,”

Levitsky says.

For homeowners seeking a French

country feel or simply a chair that can

be dry cleaned, slipcovers may be your

new best friend. “They provide a more

casual and loose feeling for your space,”

Tonks says.

And for people drawn to warm, cozy,

usable elements, “reclaimed wood accents,

butcher block countertops, and recycled

glass tiles help bring nature inside while

also being sustainable,” Levitsky says.

COLORS

In kitchens, Levitsky is seeing a blend of

natural elements and earthy color palettes:

muted browns, olive greens, warm

neutrals, and wood tones (especially when

it comes to cabinetry), plus pops of color

on walls, and open shelving with ample

textured accents.

As we embrace these exciting trends,

it’s important to remember that home

design isn’t just about aesthetics—it's about

creating a space that reflects you and how

you live.

Comfort

Take

Historic atmosphere is a bonus when it comes

to the enjoyment of one’s comfort food, and The

WARMING

Forester has old-timey vibes in spades. Located in

what was the Antler Club at the turn of the century and

WINTER MEALS

owned by the family who ran the beloved St. Pauli Inn, the

25by SHARON PENNY

restaurant is steeped in history and deeply understands comfort food. Their

Beef Stroganoff is the Eastern European classic of your fondest memories,

tender stewed chuck in a rich sour cream and mushroom sauce and served

over spaetzle. This, folks, is winter noshing at its finest. 4110 Carson Road, Camino,

530-644-1818, foresterpubandgrill.com

January is when our winter

comforts really kick in: cozy

cardigans, woolly socks, and

rich, hearty meals. You know,

the kind of cuisine that has the

power to warm the cockles of

your heart and make you feel

weirdly sentimental when you

eat it. We put our knowledge

to the test and compiled

the region’s best comfort

foods, from grilled cheese

and spaghetti & meatballs to

stroganoff, mac and cheese (of

course), and much more. Cozy

up and bring your appetitewe’re

going on an adventure to

Thai Paradise

Grilled cheese—comfort food or

emotional support meal? Discuss. I put

forth that humble grilled cheese is the

best cure for minor ailments, breakups,

hellish coworkers, stubbed toes, and

bad vibes. REALLY good grilled cheese

is a mood-changer on a tectonic

level. The Independent adds some

warming heat to their Chipotle

Grilled Cheese made with toasty,

golden sourdough, white cheddar

cheese, hatch chili pepper jack cheese,

chipotle aioli, caramelized onions, and

chopped bacon. Spicy, gooey, toasty,

and delish! 629 Main Street, Placerville, 530-

344-7645, independentplacerville.com

In the overly crowded, noodle-based

comfort food hierarchy, Pad Thai

hovers in the top tier. It’s a culinary

patchwork quilt of ingredients,

deceptively simple in its makeup

but complex in its blend of flavors

Vaiano Trattoria

and textures. And unlike many of the

comfort foods in this feature, it isn’t

heavy so you can eat LOTS of it (says

me). Thai Paradise has perfected

the comforting symphony of delicious,

pan-fried rice noodles tossed with

sweetly tangy sauce, green onions,

crunchy bean sprouts, tofu, and egg

all topped with the satisfying textural

crunch of ground peanuts. 2770 East

Mac and cheese is the culinary version

of a weighted blanket. One of winter’s

most wonderful comfort foods, it

soothes the soul (and stomach), and

much like a blanket, usually ends with

a long nap. Head to Mode Brewing &

Kitchen for some of their Grown-Up

Mac & Cheese made with smoked

gouda (hello), fontina, cheddar, and

parmesan (that’s four cheeses, folks!)

with toasted garlic breadcrumbs (wowee

zowee). Settle in for a bowl of this

deliciousness and odds are your winter

blues are sure to subside. 9110 Greenback

Lane, Orangevale, 916-510-1509, modebrewing.com

Lasagna is a culinary hug. No, not redsauce-ricotta

lasagna: REAL Italian

lasagna. Like the Lasagna Tradizionale

Toscana at Vaiano Trattoria with fresh

pasta layers smothered in sugo (meat

sauce) and béchamel sauce (creamy

goodness), topped with parmesan.

Warming, rich, filling, and full of so much

flavor, you’ll swear there must be more

to this than simply meat sauce, pasta,

and cheese. If you’re lacking for hugs in

your everyday life, then eat a plate of

this lasagna and bada-bing, bada-boom,

culinary hug. 7160 Douglas Boulevard, Granite

Max’s

Restaurant & Bar

This probably outs

me as being old, but

whenever I think of

chicken pot pie, I think

of the song from the

’90s TV show Just Shoot

Me!: “Chicken-Pot,

Chicken-Pot, Chicken-

Pot Piiiiiie.” Just me?

Anyway, if it’s the

soothing comforts of

pot pie that you seek,

look no further than

Max’s Restaurant &

Bar. Tucked inside a

Holiday Inn, they’re kind

of an unofficial comfort

food go-to, and their

Chicken Pot Pie is

no exception: tender

chicken enrobed in

a rich, creamy sauce

celery, onions, and

mushrooms, topped

with golden flaky pastry.

Beef short ribs are

complex, layered

Bacchus House Wine Bar & Bistro

at Bacchus House Wine Bar & Bistro are

as painstakingly crafted as The Dan’s 1977 Aja

album (with 100% less sarcasm). Slow-braised,

off-the-bone tender beef, served with a red

mushrooms, and sweet peas, I know you’ll love

them better. 1004 East Bidwell Street, Suite 100, Folsom,

Hisui Sushi

Ramen is a perfect comfort food, and an

exercise in focus. You can’t mentally check out

or half of it ends up spilled down your front.

But it also comforts like no other. Hisui Sushi,

a Folsom favorite for sushi rolls, keeps folks

coming back for their excellent ramen. The

Shoyu Ramen—a soy sauce-based broth with a

rich umami flavor, served with fresh handmade

noodles, pork, seasoned egg, vegetables, and

a kamaboko fish cake (aka, the cute pink and

white slices)—is the must-try. Remember to stay

It’s funny how the simplest things become

difficult in the wrong hands. Biscuits and gravy

are maybe one of the simplest, most comforting

meals, but so easy to get wrong. Tough, small,

hockey-puck biscuits, unseasoned gravy

(shudder)…it’s a minefield out there. Katrina’s

Café has been serving breakfast to Auburn

locals since 1977. That’s almost 50 years, so it

stands to reason that what they DON’T know

about Biscuits & Gravy isn’t worth knowing.

No curveballs, no pretension, no overthinking:

just perfect fluffy biscuits and a rich, flavorful

sausage gravy. Every time. 456 Grass Valley Hwy,

CrepeTown Café & Grill

Katrina’s Café

The places with the coldest winters are really

crushing it when it comes to the best comfort

foods. Eastern Europe has comfort foods on lock:

stuffed cabbage, pierogies, latkes, stroganoff,

goulash. Goulash is the national dish of Hungary,

the best answer to the question “Do I like paprika?”

and the perfect winter comfort stew, and it’s a

big favorite on the menu at CrepeTown Café

& Grill. Their Goulash boasts tender, delicious

slow-cooked beef in a thick, flavorful paprika

stew, served with spaetzle (traditional noodles) or

potatoes. Pro tip: Choose the spaetzle—you won’t

be disappointed. 4064 Mother Lode Drive, Shingle Springs,

530-677-5993, crepetowncafe.com

Carnivorous comfort foods come in many forms,

but prime rib, hands down, is one of the god-tier

comfort foods for meat lovers. When cooked

perfectly, it should be tender, juicy, and melt in

your mouth—and always be paired with perfect

vegetable sides, including, but not limited to,

mashed potatoes. Sienna makes their fan favorite

Prime Rib on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only,

and it’s worth waiting out the week to get it. The

There’s a famous bad review of Yosemite

Newsflash: the Brits REALLY love sausages. Bangers and mash

cuts to the chase: pork sausages and mashed potatoes. Boom.

Done. According to Wikipedia, it was voted Britain’s most popular

comfort food in 2009. The Fat Rabbit Public House has

styled their menu around classic British “pub grub” specialties

including the classic Bangers & Mash: two English-style

sausages, served with mashed potatoes, buttered peas, and

house-made gravy (aka, English-style brown gravy). If you’re

truly pining for the White Cliffs of Dover, try bangers and beans:

served with English-style baked beans and a sourdough roll. 825

Gumbo is a bowl full of love. While the ingredients are simple,

the cooking process requires the kind of time and patience

that you don’t give to just any dish. You have to really want

folks to enjoy your gumbo to go to the trouble of making it.

Q1227 specializes in what they call “modern comfort” food,

and they draw on the New Orlean’s style for their namesake

Q1227 Gumbo with a dark roux and a thick, stew-style

consistency, combining the essential “holy trinity” (onions, bell

peppers, and celery), with smoked turkey, chicken, shrimp, and

basmati rice. Stop by and grab a bowl for the soul. 1151 Galleria

LOCATION:

San Francisco.

DISTANCE:

4.5 miles (point-to-point).

DIFFICULTY LEVEL:

Easy to moderate.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

While surprisingly unknown, this

trail still sees quite a bit of traffic, so

expect some company along the way.

The route is one-way, unless you

want to retrace your steps, so plan

accordingly. Parking is available on

Point Lobos Avenue or on El Camino

Del Mar, but spaces can be limited,

especially on weekends. The path

is exposed, so it’s essential to wear

sunscreen (even on overcast days)

and lots of layers, in case of fog, cold

winds, or rain. Always practice Leave

No Trace principles.

WHY WE LOVE IT:

This scenic stretch of the

California Coastal Trail offers

breathtaking views of the

Golden Gate Bridge, along with

spectacular viewpoints like Sutro

Baths, Marin Headlands, Eagle’s

Point, and Cliff House. You’ll also

encounter multiple beach access

points. The trail is suitable for

families, making it one of the most

beautiful and accessible hikes in

the Bay Area—perfect for repeat

visits, no matter the season..

FUEL UP:

If you're looking to treat

yourself, head to Scoma’s

Restaurant (scomas.com)

on Pier 47 for some

added mileage and a

mouthwatering meal.

Known for its longstanding

relationships

with local fishermen,

Scoma’s has been serving

fresh seafood for over 58

years. The clam chowder

is a local favorite (often

called one of the best

in the country), but the

"lazy man's" cioppino

and linguine con vongole

(linguine with clams) are also

highly recommended.

Leave No

Trace vs.

Culture

A once serene and Zenlike

respite for many San

Francisco locals has come

to an end. At Eagle’s Point

along the Lands End trail, a

handcrafted stone labyrinth,

perched on one of the most

stunning points along the

Pacific Ocean, became a

cherished spot for visitors

seeking tranquility. Over

time, however, the structure

was repeatedly dismantled

by vandals for reasons that

remain unclear. Eventually,

the labyrinth’s informal

caretaker decided not to

rebuild it, marking the

end of a unique feature on

the trail.

Some have speculated

that the dismantling of

the labyrinth may have

been motivated by a

desire to return the area

to its “natural” state,

aligning with the core

principle of Leave No

Trace (LNT) ethics. This

ethic encourages minimal

human impact on natural

landscapes, advocating for

preserving and respecting

nature as it exists without

added human interference.

While I’m fully on board

with the Leave No Trace

principles, I also believe

in the value of art and

cultural expression in the

outdoors. I’ve personally

experienced the healing

benefits of nature, and I

want it to be preserved

for future generations.

The question remains:

When does art in nature

enhance the experience,

and when does it disrupt

the very landscape that it’s

meant to honor? Should

the outdoors remain

untouched, or is there

room for human creativity?

I’m still unsure about the

labyrinth’s place in this

debate, but one thing is

clear—I will miss seeing it on

my next trip to Lands End.

Everest

Chilli Pepper

by RYAN MARTINEZ | photos by JYO BHAMIDIPATI

Things weren’t quite right for a

night out. My family had just

returned from a trip abroad, and we

were exhausted. Our son was sick, it

was raining, and the return to reality

was chaotic: riddled with familiar yet

distant tasks that had piled up in all

corners of life.

Still, I decided to make a break for it.

A short drive led me to one of Roseville’s

hidden restaurant gems: Everest Chilli

Pepper, which serves Indian and

Nepalese fare with a Chinese flair. A

perfect choice for a recharge.

Indian food holds a special place

in my heart. The first time I tried

it was at 17, when I visited India on

a summer trip. The flavors blew

my mind in the best way possible,

each bite offering new and exciting

aromas. Cardamom? Is that a rapper?

Turmeric? Is that his sidekick? My

first dish was saag paneer, devoured

in a tiny, hole-in-the-wall restaurant

tucked far off the beaten path in the

frenzied streets of New Delhi. As I

dug into the creamy greens (saag)

combined with Indian cottage cheese

(paneer) and a host of spices, every

sense of my being was engaged.

Fast forward to today. As I dined

solo at Everest Chilli Pepper—

accompanied only by the soothing

pitter-patter of the rain and a few

other satisfied patrons—I took my

I closed my eyes to

the familiar yet everrefreshing

flavors,

each one still seeming

to surprise me.

Butter Chicken

first bite of saag paneer. It tasted

new again—just like it did nearly 20

years ago. I closed my eyes to savor

and identify the familiar yet everrefreshing

flavors, each one still

seeming to surprise me.

Butter chicken, in my foodie

opinion, is like a prodigal only child:

it can do no wrong. The rendition at

Everest was indeed a winner—rich,

aromatic, and comforting. I couldn’t

resist dipping the freshly baked,

buttery naan into it, blending the

textures and flavors into a moment of

pure indulgence.

The lamb momos—Nepalese and

Tibetan dumplings, often steamed (but

in this instance fried) and filled with

meat, vegetables, or cheese—also carried me back to a

memory of an intimate Himalayan café on the outskirts

of McLeod Ganj, far from anything or anyone familiar

except for a version of myself in the Himalayas.

Finally, I couldn’t say no to the gulab jamun—

essentially fried donut holes soaked in a sweet,

fragrant syrup—for dessert. It was as delicious as it

sounds, maybe even more so, and provided the perfect

sweet ending to my meal.

Everest Chilli Pepper successfully brings the flavors

of the Himalayas to a suburban strip mall in Roseville.

Amid the chaos of life, my experience reminded me that

a little bit of comfort food can go a long way.

When a restaurant regularly sells out of menu items before

the day is done, they’re obviously doing something right.

And at Belly Barbecue, it’s not uncommon for their ribs,

sausages, and brisket to be gone before they can turn their

sign from “open” to “closed.” Eating a meal here is an experience. Upon entering, you’re

greeted with the sweet, meaty, mouthwatering aroma of Texas-style barbecue—and an

incredibly kind staff who’s eager to help with your order. The meat’s cooked low and

slow, and everything is made in-house with fresh ingredients—even the rubs, crafted

using local cherry and oak wood. On my inaugural visit I tried the pork spare ribs,

which fell off the bone and boasted a savory smoky flavor: the kind of ribs that make

you say “mmm” with every bite. As for sides, the mac n cheese was velvety and perfect,

and the cornbread muffin tasted how you would picture Southern cornbread to

taste: soft, fresh, and buttery! Do not, I repeat, do not pass up dessert. The buttermilk

chess cake—a classic American dessert that’s sweet (but not too sweet), creamy,

custardy, and rich enough to share—was a perfect 10. If you happen to save some,

it makes for a breakfast of champions! Wondering what else is on Belly’s todie-for

menu? Expect all the classics—collard greens, cheesy grits, baked

beans, beef short ribs, slaw, and sweet potato pie—plus pulled mushrooms

(for the veg heads) and a Brunswick-style stew. Just remember to arrive

early! As of press time, they’re only open weekends from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Hot

LIST

THE

Lean Cuisine

by CAITLIN EMMETT

Do you find yourself trying to eat “better” right now? Perhaps it’s that postholiday

food coma, or maybe you made a pact to (finally) change some bad

habits; whatever the reason, eating healthier ends up on many a January

to-do list. Lucky for you, we compiled a fun list of better-for-you entrées

that don’t sacrifice taste. And that’s not all—you won’t even find the usual

offenders in this roundup (tofu and salad, I’m looking at you). Happy eating!

Big appetites and red meat lovers need to

try the Tri Tip Cabo Fries from Tallow

Organic Grill. Fries, you scoff? Yes! Not

only are their potatoes cut in-house, then

cooked in tallow instead of seed oils, but

nothing is prepared or packaged in plastic,

either. The spuds are topped with organic,

pasture-raised beef that’s been marinated

in organic fruit juice and spices. The organic

cheese is from small family dairies, and

even the hot sauce is homemade (again with

no seed oils in sight). Still not sold? You’ll

also get fajita veggies and fire-roasted corn

in there, too. 916-337-0177, tallowgrill.com;

permanent location coming soon

Plant-based folks who are craving a burger—

but not an overly processed patty—should

head to The Monk’s Cellar. Their Mana’s

Vegan Nut Burger offers a handmade patty

composed of nothing but fresh, clean, and

real food ingredients. You won’t be lacking

in protein or substance with almonds,

sunflower seeds, cashews, walnuts, white

beans, vegetables, spices, and brown rice

inside. It all gets topped with a (vegan!)

Russian dressing, white onions, tomatoes,

and romaine lettuce. You’ll receive it served

on a vegan whole-wheat bun with a side

of potato chips that, yes, are also made inhouse.

240 Vernon Street, Roseville, 916-786-

6665, monkscellar.com

Land Ocean offers a regularly rotating

Fitness Special that consistently clocks in

at 450 calories or less. What’s on the menu

this month? Blackened halibut, a lean fish

that contains plenty of micronutrients, atop

a bed of street corn with fresh jalapeños,

and a drizzle of cayenne aioli for a nice

kick. A dusting of cotija satisfies that

cheese craving while micro cilantro

amps up the nutrient power even

more. 1151 Galleria Boulevard, Suite

241, Roseville, 916-407-5640; 2720 East

Bidwell Street, Folsom, 916-983-7000,

landoceanrestaurants.com

Veg heads and meat eaters alike are

sure to be satisfied with the Solstice

Tacos from Placerville Public

House. They’re filled with herbroasted

butternut squash, which

is high in fiber, beta-carotene, and

antioxidants—all while being low in

calories. They also contain black beancorn

salsa for more fiber and protein,

plus feta cheese, which is good for your

gut. Green onions add freshness, the

chipotle aioli brings a burst of flavor,

and the flour tortillas will keep hunger

at bay. 305 Main Street, Placerville, 530-

303-3792, placervillepublichouse.com

| eat & drink |

If you adore sushi but are

trying to stay away from starch,

and sashimi just won’t cut it for

a full meal, fret not. Enter the

Cucumber Special Roll from

Nara Sushi. It’s chock-full

of lean protein with different

flavor profiles to keep things

interesting (think shrimp, crab,

salmon, tuna, and albacore),

which all get wrapped up in

cucumber instead of the usual

rice. Bonus: They have an entire

low-carb rolls section of the

menu, so you’re free to explore

other similar choices. 1125 Riley

Street, Folsom, 916-790-8844,

narafolsom.menu11.com

You don’t have to give up pizza

while eating cleaner—just

order a Cauliflower Crust

Sierra Veggie (or Veggie

Train, depending on the

location) at Old Town Pizza.

This bad boy is loaded with an

herbivore’s paradise of garlic,

artichoke hearts, bell peppers,

olives, mushrooms, yellow

onions, and tomatoes, plus

sauce and cheese. The real star

of the show, though, is the

gluten-free cauliflower crust;

it clocks in at just 160 calories

for a 10-inch small. 510 High

Street, Auburn, 530-888-7600;

599 Lincoln Boulevard, Lincoln,

916-645-7677; 120 Church

Street, Roseville, 916-668-7655,

otpizza.net

This list wouldn’t be complete without a solid poultry option, and

the Chipotle-Orange Chicken Thigh entrée from Selland’s

is too good to pass up. If you’re craving something with a hint of

sweetness without going overboard, the glaze of orange marmalade,

smoky chipotle chiles, apple cider vinegar, and ginger should do the

trick. Make it a full, nutrient-dense meal by adding their misomaple

butternut squash and roasted brussels sprouts on the side.

Try and name a better winter dish; we’ll wait. 4370 Town Center

Boulevard, El Dorado Hills, 916-932-5025, sellands.com; additional

9 Newish Restaurants

A new year brings resolutions, fresh starts, and goals; and is a prime

time to break (or make) habits and try all things new, restaurants

included. Just because holiday parties and festivities have passed

doesn’t mean that date night, an evening off from cooking, or

treating yourself need to go out the window, either. Why not add “try

a new-to-you restaurant” to your 2025 to-do list? These newish bites

on the block are the perfect place to start.

by CAITLIN EMMETT

Break for lunch in Apple

Hill by visiting Blue Barn

Provisions. You’ll find scratchmade

bites, drinks, retail items, and

more—think wine country market with

a charming, pup-friendly patio, garden,

and picnic area with bocce ball and

cornhole. Grab something to go or munch

on a charcuterie board with a glass of El

Dorado County vino. File this one away for

Valentine’s Day and beyond for when

the weather warms (spring will be here

before we know it).

MUST-TRY: Smoked brisket (on ciabatta

with horseradish crema and crispy

onions) & a local hard cider

3400 Carson Court, Placerville, 916-500-

9714, bluebarnapplemountain.com

For authentic Burmese cuisine, pop over to

Burma Light—where the chef has over

20 years’ experience in Burmese cuisine.

What is Burmese cuisine, you might ask?

Expect a blend of flavors influenced by

Chinese, Thai, and Indian cuisine, bringing

bites that are familiar and unique at the

same time. Items such as jalapeño chicken,

pad Thai, and Burmese-Indian rice (raisins,

green cardamom, and cinnamon) await.

MUST-TRY: Tea leaf salad

& Burmese iced tea

703 East Bidwell Street,

Folsom, 916-510-3176,

burmalight.com

Valenz Mexican Kitchen has

journeyed from caterpillar to butterfly—it

started as a ghost truck kitchen during

the pandemic, grew into two food trucks,

and has now secured a brick-and-mortar

location. The family-run business likes to

experiment, but fresh, comforting Sinaloastyle

Mexican food staples abound here,

too: shrimp tacos, tortas, street tacos, and

quesadillas, to name a few.

MUST-TRY: Chile relleno burrito & winebased

lime margarita

3275 Coach Lane, Cameron

Park, 530-391-2904,

valenzmexicankitchen.com

Traditional coastal Mexican cuisine

melds with a Japanese raw bar experience

in the form of Omakase Por Favor.

Choose your own adventure or expect

something special from start to finish

with their “trust the chef” omakase dinner

experience. Look forward to exciting oysters,

fresh ceviches, and local ingredients. Fun

fact: Chef Jeana Marie Pecha appeared on

Guy’s Grocery Games and won!

MUST-TRY: Handmade

seasonally flavored s’mores

(Lincoln), ice cream sandwiches

(Sacramento), & siphon pot

Valiant Coffee brewed at your table

A beer-lover’s paradise,

Moonraker Millhouse

has something for everyone—

kids included (thanks to

a playground!). Grab a quiet

spot earlier in the day in one of their

expansive seating areas or bring the whole

family (Fido included!) for live music and

some fresh air fun. Thanks to a focus on

supporting local farms and ranches, their food

is extra fresh and flavorful. With over 30 beer

options, small bites, pizzas, and sandwiches,

no one is going hungry (or thirsty) here.

MUST-TRY: Pickle pie & Outrigger (their

flagship West Coast IPA)

Rose Park Bistro

boasts a cozy, romantic

ambiance, à la Great Gatsby;

think sophisticated dark green velvet

seating and gold touches throughout. And

we haven’t even gotten to the food! Be

prepared for things like seafood paella and

lobster bucatini—elevated American cuisine

with Mediterranean notes and a modern

California influence (with a Californiafocused

wine list, too).

MUST-TRY: Butter parmesan crusted filet

mignon & Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon

1017 Galleria Boulevard, Suite 160, Roseville,

916-474-5658, roseparkbistro.com

JUNIOR

Restaurant &

Lounge is sited in an

expansive space with

an upstairs, downstairs,

and large patio—plus an

impressive cocktail list (including several

unique flight options) and fun food

menu. Come for brunch, lunch, happy

hour, dinner, or all the above. What’s

cooking? Think innovative, playful twists on

classics, such as chicken katsu salad, birria

ramen, pesto & burrata flatbread, and short

rib pappardelle.

MUST-TRY: Junior’s Burger & Purple Dragon

(cocktail)

390 North Sunrise Avenue, Roseville, 916-886-

8092, jrlounge.com

Plant-based eaters should flock to

RAKKAN Ramen—an authentic

ramen shop that started in Japan. Lucky

for us, the restaurant has expanded to the

U.S., Folsom included,

bringing their vegan,

umami-filled dashi broth

stateside. Walking in, expect

a minimalist, sleek interior and rich,

dark wood, which—not unlike their

food—feels authentically Japanese.

MUST-TRY: Spicy vegan garnet ramen &

Japanese yuzu drop

2766 East Bidwell Street, Suite 400,

Folsom, 916-496-4475, rakkanramen.com

Upon entering

Encanto Cocina &

Tequila Bar you’re

inviting space. The tortillas are

made from scratch, and their modern

infusion of traditional dishes includes

options like pulpo con papas bravas

(baby potatoes and broiled octopus)

and Milanesa de pollo (breaded crispy

chicken cutlet). As the name promises,

don’t miss the (glowing) tequila bar!

and education project that empowers

youth and adults to discover and

participate in a local food system that

encourages healthy living, nurtures the

environment, and grows a sustainable

community. The nonprofit’s main goals

are as follows:

• Local Organic Food Production.

Create, manage, and support urban

organic farms and gardens that

practice and promote responsible

land stewardship, are accessible to the

public, and permanently protected for

future generations.

• Community Education. Develop a

food and environmental education

program focused on service and

experiential learning in the

natural world and in the

kitchen for

youth and adults

via hands-on

activities,

workshops,

tours, job

training,

and youth

leadership

development.

• Food Access for All. Address

food security needs by developing

alternative food distribution and

food donation programs that target

underserved communities.

• Reconnect with the Land. Bring

people together to celebrate cultural

diversity and share the simple pleasures

of living life in harmony with nature.

VOLUNTEER

SPOTLIGHT:

Allyson Vander

Broek

What made you want to become a

volunteer for Soil Born Farms? I was

looking for a way to get involved in the

community about 10 years ago (after

retiring) and Soil Born Farms is less than 15

minutes from my house. When I looked at

their website about open opportunities,

they were seeking kitchen crew volunteers.

I love to cook and eat, so it seemed like a

perfect fit!

What do your volunteer duties entail? I

work in their Farmhouse Kitchen on the

culinary arts team prepping ingredients for

the marketplace: seasonal soups, salads,

and grain bowls, along with breakfast items

like frittata. My favorite activity is baking,

so I really enjoy making their signature

cobbler bars in a variety of flavors.

Is there training required? When I

started, I participated in an orientation

for the kitchen and learned basic sanitary

practices, since we prepare food for sale

to the public. I still learn new techniques

and cooking tips that I can apply in my

own kitchen.

What’s the time commitment? I usually

volunteer one day a week, but it’s flexible;

the schedule isn’t mandatory and is done

month by month.

What has been the best day of

volunteering so far? Every kitchen

day is pretty good, but it’s especially

rewarding when I can introduce a friend

to Soil Born. A girlfriend mentioned that

her high school-aged daughter needed

somewhere to earn community service

hours, and I was able to connect them

with Soil Born. Not only did her daughter

fulfill her requirements, but she returned

over the summer to help with cooking

demonstrations. Even her mom is a kitchen

crew volunteer now.

What’s one of the biggest challenges?

Learning to eat more in tune with the

seasons. I find it hard to let go of some

of my favorite fruits and vegetables when

their growing period is over. On the other

hand, it’s inspired me to be more flexible in

my cooking style; I’ve learned to substitute

what is available and still put something

delicious on the table.
