Restored relic heading back
to explorer’s Antarctic base
• By Dylan Smits
A TREASURED book from
Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated
South Pole expedition is heading
back to the ice.
Two Cantabrians are part of
the Inspiring Explorers programme
which will be returning
a copy of The Count of Monte
Cristo to Scott’s Discovery hut in
Antarctica.
The classic adventure novel was
read by the 1911 expedition team
at Ross Island and still has the
party’s fingerprints clearly visible
on the pages.
Written by French author
Alexandre Dumas in 1844 and
sees a wrongly imprisoned young
sailor seek revenge on those who
betrayed him.
A conservation technician at
Canterbury Museum, Louise
Piggin, 26, is on a team of eight
New Zealanders and Australians
heading to Antarctica on
Tuesday.
She will be joined by Jake
Bailey, 27, who grabbed headlines
around the world in 2015 when
he gave a rousing end of school
speech after being diagnosed
with an aggressive form of stage
four blood cancer.
The head boy of Christchurch
Boys’ High School at the time,
Bailey went into remission.
He has since written bestseller
What Cancer Taught Me
and works as a public speaker.
On a month-long tour organised
by the Antarctic Heritage
Trust, they will visit the huts of
Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton
on Ross Island and repatriate the
book.
Said Piggin: “It’s really cool.
They would have just been reading
it in the hut, and they would
have had really dirty hands
covered in soot and seal blubber.
They left the marks just from
reading it over and over again.”
Piggin works at the museum
archive in Hornby cataloguing,
researching and preserving the
collection before the museum’s
renovation is scheduled for completion
in 2029.
“The privilege of visiting one of
the most remote places on earth,
let alone being able to walk in the
footsteps of the early Antarctic
explorers, is an incredibly unique
opportunity to connect with that
history,” he said.
working on conserving the
the Antarctic trip.
nice and safe and make sure
it doesn’t fall apart while
we’re transporting it to the
hut,” she said.
“I work with lots of different
items usually, but not
usually ones from such remote
it’s pretty special.”
An anonymous donor gave
the book to the Antarctic
it as a school prize in 1965.
When Piggin steps on to
the Antarctic ice for the first
she will feel.
“I don’t quite know how I
Through returning the
Doomed expedition beaten to the Pole
BEFORE SETTING out
on a fatal expedition to the
South Pole in 1911, Robert
Falcoln Scott and his team
would spend freezing nights
huddled around a hut’s stove
fire.
Waiting for clearer weather,
the men would thumb
through the pages of The
Count of Monte Cristo in an
attempt to stave off boredom.
Scott, along with Sir Ernest
Shackleton were part of the
‘heroic age’ of Antarctic
exploration from 1900 to
1922 and led expeditions of
scientific discovery in the
continent.
From 1901 to 1904, Scott
led the first official British
exploration of the Antarctic
regions since the voyage of
James Ross 60 years earlier.
But Scott was determined
to reach the South Pole first
and embarked on another
expedition in 1910.
His voyage arrived at Ross
Island in January 1911 after
resupplying in Dunedin.
The mission to reach the
South Pole succeeded on
January 17, 1912, but to
Scott’s anguish, he found
Norwegian Roald Amundsen
had beaten him five weeks
prior.
On the return journey, a
planned meeting with supporting
dog teams from the
base camp failed, despite
Scott’s written instructions.
Only 20km from the next
supply depot, Scott and his
companions died from starvation
and frostbite.
When the party’s bodies
were discovered, they had
in their possession the first
Antarctic fossils, confirming
the continent had drifted
south away from warmer
climates.
UC scientists
challenge
existence of
‘dark energy’
CANTERBURY University
scientists have released new
research that suggests one of
the universe’s most mysterious
concepts – dark energy – does not
exist.
For years physicists have tried to
explain observations that the universe’s
expansion is speeding up in
all directions with the concept of
“dark energy”.
Dark energy is a proposed form
of energy affecting the universe on
the largest scales and drives galaxies,
stars and planets apart.
Now a team of physicists led
by UC Professor David Wiltshire
analysed light curves from the
Pantheon+ supernovae to show
the universe was expanding in a
“lumpier” way.
The new study – published in the
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical
Society – shows the idea of
“dark energy” is not needed at all.
Instead, the team proposed a
different model – called timescape
cosmology – to understand the
evolution of the universe.
The scientists said the findings –
together with new data – implied
“profound consequences” for cosmology
and astrophysics and may
help resolve the universe’s biggest
mystery within five years.
On the UC website, Wiltshire
says dark energy “may in fact be
a misidentification of ‘quasi-local
gravitational energy’, an aspect of
Einstein’s theory that we have yet
to fully understand”.
“My team and I are testing
its properties. In future we aim
to more deeply understand the
nature of gravitational energy by
Feeding foodbanks in desperate times
WHEN BILLS pile up and money
gets tighter, the demand for foodbank
support skyrockets.
Kairos, a food rescue organisation,
doesn’t operate as a
foodbank – it feeds them. Acting
as a hub between bulk food
donors and local foodbanks, the
organisation ensures a steady flow
of supplies for those in need.
Kairos manager Stuart Ennor
said the organisation is preparing
for an increase in demand from
foodbanks expected in the coming
weeks and months.
“We experienced a 42 per cent
increase in demand for food
support in 2024 (up 83 per cent
compared to 2021), and that
will climb again in the coming
months,” he said.
“Ensuring food banks have a
reliable supply of what they need
is essential. We are very fortunate
to have an excellent supply chain
from a number of organisations
we work with, however this
becomes challenging over Christmas
and New Year as demand
grows.
“We want to be sure we can
keep our foodbanks fed, so we’re
asking people to donate. Even a
little goes a long way, and a lot
goes even further in helping those
in greater need than themselves,”
Ennor said.
“Maybe as people look for bargains
and gifts over the summer
season, they might think about
holding a few dollars back for
Kairos to help foodbanks who are
helping those most in need.”
The organisation processes
three tonnes of food daily that
would otherwise go to landfill.
It sources short-dated stock
from supermarkets, unsold farm
produce that doesn’t meet market
standards, and leftovers from
cafés and restaurants.
The food is sorted and
distributed to 25 foodbanks,
including the City Mission and
Salvation Army, with the help
of 252 volunteers and a small
permanent team of 11.
In 2023, Kairos rescued and
delivered 420 tonnes of food. In
2024, they more than doubled that
figure to 840 tonnes – equivalent
to more than 1.8 million meals.
Ennor said the rising cost of living
is putting increased strain on
households and as Kairos expands
to meet growing demand, its
operating costs also rise.
“We don’t want to turn
foodbanks away. They can’t just
‘magic up’ what they need – they
rely on us.
“Please donate and make a
difference. Your support helps
provide meals for families in need
across Canterbury.”
How a flightless bird went from
boot polish brand to national icon
The kiwi has become
one of New Zealand’s
most recognised
symbols both at home
and abroad. In his
latest book, cultural
historian Richard Wolfe
examines how the
flightless forest-dweller
became part of our
national identity
IN KIWI: A CURIOUS Case of
National Identity, Wolfe writes
about how companies adopted
the name and image of the
flightless bird and its popular
association with New Zealand
soldiers during World War I.
Even prior to European settlers
arriving, the feathers of the
bird – also known as te manu
huna a Tāne or the hidden bird
of the god of forest Tāne – were
highly sought after for prestigious
cloaks (kahu kiwi).
Some of the other earliest
adaptations came in the 1850s,
when an insurance company
used the bird as part of their
logo, and the Bank of New
Zealand’s imagery was associated
with the bird early on too,
Wolfe told Nine to Noon.
“The kiwi, along with many
insensitivity, were used
for trademarks and symbols
for companies and for various
organisations.
“The big thing that really gave
the kiwi a sort of boost in terms of
it being accepted as a national
symbol and aligning itself or
being adopted by New Zealanders,
was the invention
by an Australian (William
Ramsay) of kiwi boot polish
… when he came to giving
it a name, he decided to honour
his wife’s homeland.
“Kiwi being a short, sharp, sort
of easily remembered name and
the image of the bird, a sort of nice
round image, suited a round tin
admirably.”
The product, which was
launched in Melbourne in the
early 1900s, went on to become
popular abroad too, as the British
government bought it in bulk for
use by the army during World
War I, he says.
“So the tins then became scattered
around the battlefields of
Europe and the connection was
made with New Zealand soldiers
as a national emblem.
UNLIKELY ICON: Without any sort of official endorsement, the kiwi
emerged as a national symbol in the early 1900s, following the invention
of Kiwi brand boot polish.
PHOTO: GETTY
over there, and so by the time they
came back to New Zealand postwar,
the connection had sort of
been made.
“Prior to that, New Zealanders,
like Australians, soldiers were
referred to as diggers, but at least
calling them Kiwi gave them a
rather separate identity.”
Near the end of WWI and
whilst stationed at Sling Camp in
southern England, New Zealand
soldiers became frustrated while
waiting for transportation home
and preoccupied themselves by
drawing a kiwi outline on the
side of the chalk hill overlooking
their camp, Wolfe says.
“This bird became a local
landmark. So, I think that sort
of helped cement the association
between the soldiers and the bird.
“But interestingly, during the
Second World War, the kiwi had
to be covered over, because it
was seen as a bit of a landmark
that Germans coming across the
channel would keep an eye out
for it and know where they were.”
The landmark is still visible and
was initially being cared for by
the same company that invented
the kiwi shoe polish, he says.
But the bird’s emergence as a
symbol of the country could be
dated back even further to the
early 1900s, with several cartoons
depicting the All Blacks team as
a kiwi.
Wolfe believes one of the factors
that boosted the kiwi as a
national emblem was that it was
unofficial.
“New Zealand’s national symbols
are the silver fern, which is
on the national coat of arms, and
the Southern Cross … which is
on the national flag.
“But the kiwi doesn’t have
that sort of official endorsement,
although it’s on coats of arms of
various cities and burrows …
but it’s very much a bird of the
people, and I think the fact it has
not had that official endorsement
has helped its rise and acceptance
by New Zealanders at large.”
Wolfe says concerns about
“the most unlike bird of birds”
being the national symbol were
overcome thanks to its special
traits and apparent ingenuity,
which New Zealanders have been
likened to. - RNZ

KEEPING COOL IN SUMMER
Where’s your favourite place to
cool off from the summer heat?
Cantabrians have taken to the
water everywhere from Coes
Ford to the Groynes, Corsair
Bay to the Botanic Gardens.
In January 1985, Victoria Lake
proved no place for ducks
as Alf’s Imperial Army did
battle with a band of pirates
attempting to rename the lake
‘Blackbeard’s Swamp’. The
army refused to let the insult
go unchallenged, although
they were outnumbered 2-to-1.
Two ladies rowed out at
halftime with refreshments
before an eventual truce was
called before the crowd of 4000
spectators.
Teenage boredom turns to success
on the greens for croquet quartet
• By Sam Coughlan
SEVEN YEARS ago, four young
friends picked up an unexpected
sport – not knowing they would
become some of the best players in
the country.
Josh Winter, twins Myles
and James Duggan (all 21), and
Levi Franks, 20, started playing
croquet in late 2017 and then
began competing in 2018, while at
Cashmere High School.
They have seen big success
since then – with a high point of
representing New Zealand at the
U21 golf croquet world championships
last year and winning
numerous national titles.
They will all compete at the
open national championships in
Nelson starting on Monday.
It was Winter who started
things off. When his mum Lisa,
wanting him to try something
new, got a flyer in the letterbox
from the Cashmere Croquet Club
offering a give-it-a-go day, she told
him to go down.
“I didn’t know what it was, and I
really didn’t want to go, but I went
down,” said Winter who was 14 at
the time.
“I was into pool at the time so
she thought I would like croquet.”
He went down with a friend,
Matthew Sherman, who no longer
plays, and shortly after got his
house and we were bored in the
morning, so we decided to play
croquet a bit.
“We started playing, then James
and Levi turned up about a half a
month later.”
They were all sporty kids –
Winter played football with
James and Myles Duggan.
He isn’t sure exactly what kept
them coming back but said they
were just having a lot of fun.
“ I don’t think we would have
kept playing if we didn’t enjoy it!”
Golf croquet was the choice
for the foursome – a shorter, less
complex version of the game
where each player plays one
shot at a time. The first to get a
ball through seven hoops is the
winner.
It’s similar, but not identical, to
association croquet – the more
traditional version of the sport
where players can take more than
one shot in sequence as a reward
TOP: The foursome were all
among the top eight players
at the recent U21 nationals.
for getting a ball through a hoop
or hitting another ball. The first
to get through each of the six
hoops twice and then hit the
centre pole is the winner.
Last month, the foursome
competed at the U21 nationals in
Palmerston North, where Franks
took out the singles competition,
beating James Duggan in the
semi-finals while Winter was
another semi-finalist.
Myles Duggan lost to his
brother in the quarter-finals and
the twins also made the final of
the doubles competition, losing to
another sibling duo, Wellington’s
Jessica and Nathan Bullen.
Franks is also among the top
players in the country for all ages,
having won the national championship
singles once and doubles
three times – twice with Winter
and once with James Duggan.
He will be a part of the national
team heading to Tasmania for
the Openshaw Shield – the world
teams championship – in February,
and the U21 world championship
in Florida in April.
“ My goal is to win a world
championship,” Franks said.
“Next year I have two chances
– I think the under 21 worlds
will be my best chance. The biggest
thing with the open worlds
is I’ve got my whole life to try
and win it.”
They will not be the only
Cantabrians at the nationals
– defending champion Logan
McCorkindale, 24, is from
Ashburton originally but now
lives in Christchurch and will be
competing alongside his brother
Reece.
Paul Kaiser, 20, lives and studies
in Christchurch after moving
from Palmerston North and will
team up with James Duggan for
the doubles competition.
Jason Hodgett, who competed
at the U21 world championship
in 2019, will also be taking part.
Former world No 1 Chris
Clarke and his wife Jenny, a
reserve for the Openshaw Shield
team, will compete only in the
doubles.
James Duggan looked back
fondly on the foursome’s journey
so far.
“ Croquet has brought us really
close together, and it’s just a
whole lot of great memories over
the six years,” he said.
“I look back and it’s one of the
best times of my life.”
WEEK ONE
TrAiNiNG ProGrAMMe
Congratulations on making your decision to enter
the CorDe City2surf!
No doubt, the first hint of panic will have set in as your thoughts turn to ‘how are you going to
prepare yourself for this challenge?’ And that is probably why you are now reading this article. This
is going to be as close to employing your own personal coach as you can get….and, it is all for free.
We are presenting two 10 week programmes to you. The first one is for beginners and CORDE
City2Surf first timers. You consider yourself unfit, probably carry a bit too much around the hips and
waist and you have not played sport for a period of time. The second programme is aimed at people
who are already dabbling in fitness and have some experience with jogging or running. For both
groups the main goal will be to finish the event, enjoy the experience but above all use the 10 week
programme as a means to improve your overall health, fitness and quality of life.
To achieve this goal
you need to develop
some awareness around
the basic requirements
of exercising for health
and fitness. First and
foremost this has to do
with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for
4 sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have and
1 session per week is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally build
towards between 30 and 50 minutes with
one longer session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at? The
good thing about the programme is that all
your runs will be done at submaximal pace,
also called conversation pace. That means a
pace where you can still talk. If you can’t talk
you are going too fast and you are likely to
come to a grinding halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TiP oF The WeeK
If you have never run or jogged before,
we recommended that you alternate
brisk walking with jogging as indicated
in the schedule. Be aware that jogging
is different from running. When jogging,
you go at a pace which is only a fraction
faster than a brisk walk, your feet stay
close to the ground and the rhythm is
that of a slow dance. This is a technique,
once mastered, which will enable you
to jog for longer periods of time (for
example, the whole 12 km distance..)
Andris
Apse
Gallery
opens in
Diamond
Harbour
INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed New
Zealand photographer, Andris Apse,
has opened a gallery on the Peninsula
and is inviting people to view and
purchase his award winning
photography by appointment.
Aer 20 years based in Ōkārito, 100
kms south of Hokitika, Andris has
relocated to Diamond Harbour where he
has set up his print workshop and
Landscape Gallery.
Although many may not know of
Andris Apse, many will most certainly
recognise his work. It has been
commissioned by prestigious publications
all around the world and created into
catalogues of sumptuous and coveted
books of photography.
Born in Latvia in northeastern Europe,
Andris spent ve of his early childhood
years in a postwar refugee camp in
Germany before emigrating to New
Zealand and settling in the Bay of Islands
with his mother.
At 18 years of age Andris Apse had no
aspirations to become an award winning
photographer. In fact, he says he didn’t
even have a camera. However taking a
position as a trainee Forestry Worker had
him travelling the country where he
found himself absolutely spellbound by
the breathtaking beauty of Fiordland. He
said he felt a strong need to share this
experience and knew then that he would
pursue a career as a photographer.
And he has made a career of it. Today
he is one of New Zealand’s most
celebrated Landscape Photographers. His
awards and acknowledgments are many
including a New Zealand Order of Merit,
Olympus International Photographer of
the Year, and Guest Exhibitor at the
International Photography Hall of Fame,
Oklahoma, USA.
Chatting with Andris it is immediately
evident how passionate and emotionally
attached he is to his cra. Great planning
and patience goes into each shoot and he
has an exceptional eye for detail. His
photos capture and explain unique stories
that speak out its viewer.
“Landscape photography has been my
life for more than 40 years. During that
time I have been fortunate to create work
that has delighted and inspired people
from all around the world, earning the
respect of peers and critics alike. I
warmly invite you to my gallery so that
you can view my work and discover your
own personal connection to the New
Zealand landscape through my
photography.”
Andris Apse Diamond Harbour
Gallery is located at Koromiko Crescent,
Diamond Harbour. Viewing by
appointment. For an appointment phone
