Headstock
Driven by AC motor through pulleys and
a poly-V belt, speeds are continuously
variable. The main spindle is supported
by permanently lubricated high precision
bearings.
The bearings high load capacity provides
rigidity and superior vibration dampening
under the most severe cutting conditions.
The result is precise parts with the
desired surface finish.
Headstock, geared with 2 speed ranges
(M 23 / M 580, M 27 / M 680, M 33 / M 850
and M 43 / M 1100).
Control apron
Provided with the electronic handwheels
that control the manual movement of the
X and Z axes, switches and a joystick.
All the necessary controls for manual
operation of the lathe are located here.
The control apron is outside the guards
and can be uncoupled from the carriage
for automatic operation.
Patented in Brazil and USA with
correspondent patent application in
England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico
and Spain.
8
Direct drive headstock
(M 17 / M 420 and M 20 / M 510).

Lathe bed
The bed is supported by cast iron
columns. The bed and columns have
extensive internal ribbing to provide
superior absorption of vibration during
any machining conditions.
The plane and prismatic guide ways
are induction hardened and ground and
constitute a self adjusting system that
guarantees full contact of the carriage on
the bed.
These features are critical to provide
rigidity, stability and precision during high
stock removal operations.
Tailstock
With manually operated quill. Heavy duty
structure provides the necessary rigidity
to support heavy parts and heavy cutting.
Tailstock with pneumatically driven quill for M 17 /
M 420 and M 20 / M 510 (optional).
Carriage and
cross slide
The cross slide guideways are induction
hardened and ground.
The carriage guideways are coated
with Turcite, a low friction material that
enables precision movements and fast
acceleration and deceleration. For greater
lubrication efficiency the Turcite has an
extensive system of oil grooves that
allow the smooth flow of oil as well as
lubrication retention in key areas.
The low friction material and the effective
lubrication system guarantee greater
resistance to wear of movable parts,
providing longer machine
useful life.
Quick change tool holder with 2 or 3 tool attachment
sides (optional)
Tailstock with hydraulically driven quill for M 23 /
GE-Fanuc 21i-T
Versatile and highly
reliable control
The M Series offers the user the flexibility of
selecting different operating modes:
• Manual Mode
• Basic Mode
• Fixed Cycles Mode
• G Code Programming Mode
Manual Mode
Using the electronic handwheels, a workpiece can
be manually machined as in an engine lathe.
10
Basic Mode
The first work piece can be machined step-bystep
through the electronic handwheels and
simultaneously each step of the operation can be
recorded.
In this mode, the control provides canned cycles to
aid manual cutting, for example; taper and circular
machining.
Specific data for the operation to be performed
must be introduced in the respective command
screens using only one electronic hand wheel the X
and Z axes are moved simultaneously.
Movements and other commands can be recorded
as a program to reproduce parts geometrically the
same as the first one.
Fixed Cycles Mode
CNC possesses fixed cycles for:
• Roughing and finishing
• Grooving
• Thread cutting
• Drilling
• Rigid tap
It enables the operator to generate a program
based on information he has entered in the profile
generating graphic screens. The operator enters
the machining information (feed, speed, and depth
of cut) as guided by the software.
Profile Generating Screen - GE-Fanuc 21i-T.
The part geometry is inserted through a series of
lines and/or arcs.
As the part geometry is created, the profile drawing
is shown on the graph.
Once the part and program information is entered,
the machining simulation can be seen on
the screen.
Machining Simulating Screen - GE-Fanuc 21i-T
The program is developed in stages properly
sequenced to generate the machining operation.
Commands for tool changes, spindle speed and
miscellaneous functions (M) such as spindle direction
and coolant control are automatically recorded
and introduced through a soft key at the proper
stages in the program.
Mode for G-code programing
The program can be developed directly in G-code
language, operating as a typical CNC lathe.
Remote Diagnostic
(Optional) (*)
The M Series machines can be equipped with
the optional Remote Diagnostic that enables the
analysis and solution of machine problems by a
Romi service technician located at a distance,
using a PC installed at Romi and a user’s telephone
line connected to the machine.
CNC information such as alarms, configuration
parameters, programs, etc. may be obtained for
remote problem analysis and solution, reducing
machine idle time and maintenance costs.
(*) Requires the optional: Remote Diagnostic Interface
