innovation

The furnishing fabrics industry

is undergoing a dynamic shift,

balancing innovation with tradition and

sustainability with style. As consumers

become more discerning and

environmentally conscious, the demand

for fabrics that offer both functionality

and aesthetic appeal is set to grow. By

embracing these trends, manufacturers

and designers can cater to evolving

preferences and shape the future of

interiors worldwide.

it’s a minimalist urban apartment, a luxurious hotel suite, or a cozy

outdoor patio, the furnishing fabrics of today are redefining the way we live and

interact WWhether

with our spaces.

The global furnishing fabrics industry has entered a transformative phase, driven

by changing consumer preferences, technological advancements, and a growing

emphasis on sustainability. Whether for residential or commercial spaces, furnishing

fabrics are no longer just a functional element but a statement of style,

comfort, and environmental consciousness. Here, we explore the latest trends

shaping the world of furnishing fabrics.

1. Sustainability at the Forefront

Sustainability has become a critical driver in the furnishing fabrics industry. Consumers

increasingly prefer eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, recycled

polyester, and hemp. Innovations like biodegradable textiles and fabrics made

from upcycled materials are gaining popularity. Manufacturers are also adopting

waterless dyeing techniques and reducing carbon footprints across the production

chain. Labels like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OEKO-TEX certification

are now key factors influencing consumer trust and purchase decisions.

23

Furnishing Fabric Fashion

24

Furnishing Fabric Fashion

2. Smart and Functional Fabrics

Advances in textile technology are redefining what furnishing fabrics can do.

Smart fabrics with built-in functionalities such as temperature regulation, stain

resistance, and odor control are becoming highly sought after. These fabrics are

particularly appealing for commercial applications, such as in hotels and offices,

where durability and ease of maintenance are essential.

3. Bold Colors and Patterns

Designers are experimenting with bold colors and patterns to reflect individuality

and creativity. Jewel tones, such as emerald green and sapphire blue, are

making a comeback, alongside earthy shades like terracotta and olive. Patterns

inspired by nature—botanical prints, florals, and animal motifs—are increasingly

popular, offering a connection to the natural world.

4. Textural Diversity

Texture is playing a significant role in creating depth and visual interest in interiors.

Velvet, boucle, and chenille are trending as luxurious options for upholstery,

while linen and jute are favored for their natural and organic appeal. Layering

different textures within the same space is becoming a popular design technique,

adding a tactile and multidimensional effect.

25

26

Furnishing Fabric Fashion

5. Minimalist Aesthetics with a Touch of Luxury

Minimalism continues to dominate global design trends, with furnishing fabrics

contributing to clean and understated aesthetics. Neutral color palettes, simple

patterns, and smooth finishes are preferred, but they are often paired with

subtle elements of luxury, such as metallic threads or soft, plush materials. This

fusion of simplicity and opulence is particularly evident in modern Scandinavian

and Japandi-inspired interiors.

6. Revival of Traditional Craftsmanship

There is a growing appreciation for handcrafted textiles and traditional weaving

techniques. Artisanal fabrics with rich cultural heritage—such as Turkish kilims,

Indian block prints, and African mud cloths—are being incorporated into contemporary

spaces, blending tradition with modernity. These fabrics not only add

character to interiors but also support local artisans and preserve age-old crafts.

7. Multi-Functional Spaces, Multi-Functional Fabrics

As homes and offices evolve into multi-functional spaces, furnishing fabrics

are adapting to meet diverse needs. Convertible sofas, modular furniture, and

foldable partitions demand fabrics that are durable, flexible, and easy to clean.

Outdoor fabrics, which were once limited to patio furniture, are now being used

indoors due to their resilience and aesthetic versatility.

27

Furnishing Fabric Fashion

8. Digital Printing and Customization

Digital printing technology is revolutionizing the furnishing fabrics industry,

enabling highly customized designs and shorter production runs. Consumers

can now order bespoke fabrics that match their exact preferences, from personalized

patterns to unique color schemes. This trend aligns with the growing

demand for personalized interiors.

9. Focus on Health and Wellness

Furnishing fabrics are increasingly designed to contribute to healthier living

environments. Anti-microbial, hypoallergenic, and air-purifying fabrics are being

introduced to cater to health-conscious consumers. This trend is particularly

significant in post-pandemic interior design, where hygiene and wellness are top

priorities.

10. Hybrid Designs for Indoor-Outdoor Living

With a rising interest in outdoor living spaces, hybrid fabrics that seamlessly

transition between indoor and outdoor use are gaining popularity. These fabrics

combine weather resistance with stylish designs, making them ideal for generating

cohesive aesthetics that blur the boundaries between interiors and exteriors.

Storytelling

and natural

beauty: Heimtextil

Trends 25/26

provide retailers

with valuable

solutions

These themes reflect what is becoming increasingly important to customers: Products that not

only impress with their aesthetics, but also fulfil ethical and ecological requirements. These

approaches can be experienced live in the Trend Arena - from material qualities and colors

to innovative production processes. Retailers will be given concrete inspiration and tools to

orientate their product range towards more conscious consumption. After all, consumers’

purchasing decisions are clear: long-lasting, high-quality products that are also produced in a

socially and environmentally responsible way are very popular. A recent study conducted by

IFH on behalf of Messe Frankfurt confirms this. Consumers are becoming increasingly selective

and weigh things up carefully before making a purchase decision. When they decide in favor

of a product, it must be convincing in all areas: durable, high quality - but also sustainable.

After all, the majority of Europeans attach great importance to sustainability when it comes to

home textiles. Aspects such as long-lasting products, recyclable materials and transparency are

among the key criteria.

37

Furnishing Fabric Fashion

38

Furnishing Fabric Fashion

The beauty of the imperfect: “Naturally Uneven”

“Naturally Uneven” celebrates the rawness and authenticity

of natural materials. Fabrics such as linen, hemp, jute and

wool stand for organic structures and handmade perfection

in the imperfect. Small imperfections and natural grains

make each piece unique and tell stories of craftsmanship and

originality. The color palette emphasizes this natural aesthetic:

soft grey like untreated stone, unbleached fiber tones

and the delicate “Rose of Permanence”, which symbolizes

down-to-earthiness and timelessness.

Innovation meets sustainability: “Radically Restructured”

This theme shows how advanced technologies and environmentally

conscious design merge. The focus is on recycled

materials that minimize the consumption of resources and

39

Furnishing Fabric Fashion

set new standards in textile production.

Heavy and light, transparent

and opaque - these contrasts create

a fascinating interplay of structure

and appearance. In terms of color,

bold shades such as “End of Petrol”

and “New Green Deal” dominate,

visualizing the upheaval. Techniques

such as 3D weaving, digital printing

and laser cutting reflect the innovative

power that characterizes this

approach.

Redefining circular thinking: “Regenerative”

“Regenerative” embodies the principles

of renewal, growth and circularity

for customers who want to help

shape a more sustainable future.

Here you will find a mix of natural,

recycled and bio-based fibers from

linen, hemp and recycled wool to

textiles that have been upcycled or

reused. Handcrafted elements and

techniques underline the focus on

imperfection and individuality, while

colors such as “Regenerative Azure”

or “Repairable Green” convey the

theme in all its many facets.

The success of Turkish furnishing fabric exports can be

attributed to several factors:

- Competitive pricing: Turkish manufacturers are able to

offer high-quality fabrics at competitive prices, making

them attractive to international buyers.

- Strong production capacity: The country’s well-developed

infrastructure and large-scale production facilities

allow manufacturers to meet both domestic and international

demand efficiently.

- Brand recognition: Many Turkish brands have built a

strong international reputation for producing luxurious,

high-quality fabrics, which has contributed to their success

in global markets.

- Compliance with international standards: Many Turkish

manufacturers comply with global quality and safety

standards, including Oeko-Tex and ISO certifications,

which ensures that their products meet international

expectations for quality and sustainability.

Challenges Facing the Industry

Despite its growth, the Turkish furnishing fabric industry

faces several challenges. Rising raw material costs, fluctuating

exchange rates, and competition from low-cost

producers in other countries can affect profitability. Additionally,

the increasing demand for sustainable products

means that manufacturers must continue to adapt their

production processes to meet consumer expectations.

55

However, these challenges also present opportunities for

innovation and differentiation. By focusing on producing

high-quality, sustainable fabrics and leveraging the

country’s rich textile heritage, Turkish manufacturers can

continue to stand out in the competitive global market.

The Future of the Turkish Furnishing Fabric Industry

The future of the Turkish furnishing fabric industry looks

bright, with continued growth expected both domestically

and internationally. As consumer preferences evolve,

there is an increasing demand for sustainable, eco-friendly

fabrics, as well as smart fabrics that offer enhanced

functionality. Turkish manufacturers are well-positioned

to meet these trends, given their strong commitment to

innovation and sustainability.

Additionally, the rise of e-commerce and digital marketing

presents new opportunities for Turkish fabric manufacturers

to reach a global audience. Online platforms

and international trade fairs provide valuable exposure

for Turkish companies, allowing them to showcase their

products to potential buyers around the world.

Salone del Mobile.

Milano Unveils the

Milan Design (Eco)

System

A Data-Driven Exploration

of the Economic and

Cultural Impact of Milan’s

Iconic Design Event

E

Each April, the Salone del Mobile.Milano transforms

Milan into the global epicenter of design, captivating

international attention with its unparalleled creativity

and innovation. This prestigious event not only drives

cultural dynamism but also bolsters national competitiveness,

generating a remarkable economic impact of

€275 million—an impressive 13.7% increase compared

to 2023.

To better understand and shape the future of this influential

event, the Milan Design (Eco) System initiative

was launched. Developed by Salone del Mobile.Milano

in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, the project

marks a groundbreaking approach by leveraging comprehensive

data. With insights from 37 data holders,

86 sources, 10 working groups, and 530 field observations,

the initiative sheds light on the scale, dynamics,

and contributions of this world-renowned design phenomenon,

reinforcing Milan’s identity as the Capital of

Design. The protagonists of the first “snapshot” of what

is configured as a complex and dynamic ecosystem are

61

Furnishing Fabric Fashion

the Salone del Mobile.Milano, which again in 2024

was confirmed as an international catalyst notching

up a record 370,824 presences, 65.6% of them from

abroad, and Fuorisalone, a complementary network

of urban events (1,326 at the last edition). The same

ecosystem historically includes Milan, which has

seen a 66% increase in the number of Design Core

companies and professionals since 2009, in a sector

in which design is the primary activity: 2,275 to date,

or 1 in 7 in Italy, 1 in 2 in Lombardy. Of these, 12%

are run by young people, 13.7% by foreign citizens,

27.2% by women (a figure higher than the European

average of 24%). These figures confirm the territory

as a circulator of design knowledge (and more) and

learning, thanks also to its close correlation with the

event.

Divided into 8 chapters, more than 260 pages and

with over 90 graphs, the Report sets out the framework

– in prototype form – that will guide the creation

of the first permanent Observatory dedicated

to a globally unique event. The analysis starts with a

360° account of the evolution of the Salone “model.”

It shares insights and performance indicators for the

2024 edition. It then sets out data and interpretations

of the city’s Design Week, analyzed through

260 surveys and 530 field observations. This is then followed by the results of the

survey on the impact generated by the event, which took 7 macro-themes into

consideration: from visitor flows to digital shopping, to circularity. While bridging

the gap between event and impact, this new exploration of the Milan Design System,

commissioned from the Politecnico di Milano by the Salone, comes exactly

25 years after the first scientific research project, from which it took its name.

Conceived as a hub for open and inclusive reflection, the Appendix to Milan Design

(Eco) System contains the summary contributions of the ten content leaders

steering the Working Tables organized last July by the Salone and the Politecnico:

more than one hundred stakeholders for a participatory discussion on ten key

issues related to the great event, from sustainability to legacy in the field of urban

regeneration, and the possible strategies to be put in place to tackle challenges

that can no longer be ignored, from reception to mobility, cybersquatting and

other latent critical issues.

This first edition of the Report was made possible thanks to a sharing of objectives

with the Municipality of Milan and Lombardy, and thanks to the collaboration of

the respective relevant municipal and regional departments,

of a large number of trade and professional

associations, and study and research centers that have

made available a consistent, albeit fragmented, series

of data sets, a fundamental starting point for any reliable

interpretation of the phenomenon.

Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano,

had this to say: “The aim of this Report is to share data

and interpretations, available to all the city residents, to

discuss the strategies that must guide the future with

greater awareness, starting today. The results of this

exploration paint a first picture of a vital ecosystem,

which in its complementarity and synergy with the

territory, distinguishes what happens every year in April

in Milan from what happens in other fairs and design

weeks around the world. The main challenge – to be

faced with the city, in all its instances – is to maintain

the attractive power of the event, maintaining the high

quality of the offering, whilst also dealing with those latent

criticalities that characterize events of this magnitude.

In the aftermath of the pandemic, the Salone has

faced more than one challenge: the most important –

after the slow return to ‘normality’– has been the push

for internationalization processes, which occupies us

365 days a year. We saw the result in April, when Milan

went back to being an intercontinental stage, thanks to a Salone that, in terms of

attendance, exceeded all expectations: a goal but also a starting point, achieved

thanks to the commitment of the Wood-Furniture industrial chain, which puts its

faith into the trade fair year after year, contributing, along with the schedule of

events in the city, to the leadership position of Milan, the Capital of Design. Within

the context of unstable markets and geopolitical crises, in order to look to the

future, our ecosystem must also maintain its balance, with a sharing of objectives

between public and private actors, and an ‘yes, if’ rather than ‘no, because’, strategy,

as mooted by the sociologist Charles Landry, one of the leading international

experts in creative cities, entrusted with opening the presentation meeting of the

Report, a tool created to be made available to all the city decision makers with

whom we want to reflect and act jointly to better inform tomorrow.”

Maria Porro went on to say: ”Along with Gianfranco Marinelli, President of Federlegno

Arredo, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe

Sala, and the President of the Lombard Region, Attilio Fontana, for taking on board

and supporting the project, to the Rector of the Politecnico di Milano, Donatella

Sciuto, to Alessia Cappello, Councillor for Economic Development and Labor Poli-

62

cies of the Municipality of Milan, and to Barbara Mazzali, Councillor for Tourism,

Territorial Marketing and Fashion of the Lombard Region, for having set in motion

the invaluable collaboration of the relevant departments involved, and, last but

not least, to all the Milano Design Week districts and to all those who have played

an active part in this first step towards what will be a program of listening and

actions to be built with the city, for the city”.

“The Salone del Mobile.Milano and Milan Design Week are a shining example of

how a city can build its identity and attractiveness around a specific theme. We

believe that this Report can be considered a prototype for sparking dialogical,

coordinated, and constructively critical action, useful for the future of the event

and for the city itself. It is in the relationship between the economic activities that

represent the driver of the system (the Salone del Mobile.Milano), its system of

stable and proactive resources (the Milan Design System) and the informal model

of widespread creativity, that a unique and original Milanese vision emerges once

again. The Milanese ecosystem resides precisely within this collective surplus

value. This interconnection demands attention to environmental factors within

the framework of common responsibility. It is a task that will require the consolidation

of this analysis, with its data set and interpretative frameworks and a

reflection on the governance of the ecosystem and its complex set of stakeholders,”

commented Stefano Maffei and Francesco Zurlo, heading

the research team at the Department of Design – Politecnico di

Milano.

“The Salone del Mobile.Milano is an event that our city cannot

and does not intend to give up. During the Milan Design Week,

the city and the event operate in continuity: one embraces the

other, and vice versa, each with their own share of entrepreneurship,

sparkle, pragmatism and internationality. The Salone

and Milan have built a virtually indissoluble bond on this play

of reflections, dialogue and reciprocal influences, which dates

back 60 years and activates an ecosystem that generates value

for the region, for the country, and for the design sector at

global level. This is why examining the dynamics that feed the

design ecosystem of Milan is so very strategic, for the growth

of both the event and the city. The Report produced by the

Salone del Mobile with the Politecnico is a complex, structured

piece of work in which I am proud to say that the Municipality

of Milan has also taken part. This analysis leads the way for

reflections on the future of the city that are anything but banal.

I am quite sure that this Report and the Observatory of the

future will be useful tools not just for examining the repercussions

of this great event on our community, but also for helping

the Municipal Council to shape effective policies and actions

that will ensure that the city’s response is increasingly sustainable

and inclusive,” added Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan.

“The Salone del Mobile.Milano and the Milan Design Week

events represent a key opportunity for the Lombard economy,

for the design sector at global level and for a huge range of correlated

industries. Measuring their impacts is proof of great farsightedness.

It means recognizing, in the socio-economic and

cultural scope of the event, a beneficial driving force for the

development of the territory. Thanks in part to this painstaking

analysis, the Milan Design (Eco) System continues to strive for

ongoing improvement and aims to build a legacy, edition after

edition. I am extremely proud of the first Annual Report: the

informative and cognitive purpose of which I have backed from

the outset. I thank Politecnico di Milano for its scientific oversight

and the Salone del Mobile.Milano for sharing the results

with a great sense of responsibility and transparency towards

our citizens. An excellent prerequisite for shaping policies,

objectives, and priorities with our stakeholders – including the

Lombard Region – with regard to services, businesses, employment

and training. We welcome this permanent observatory,

a reflection of the immense value generated by a prestigious

Lombard phenomenon,” said Attilio Fontana, President of the

Lombard Region.

“The term ecosystem encapsulates the very concept of complexity.

The impact of major events, such as the Salone del

Mobile and Design Week, on the city of Milan, the territory and

its allied industries is certainly an articulated phenomenon that

is by no means easy to interpret. It is precisely for this reason

that we believe that the Politecnico di Milano, in training and

research, is up to this challenge,” commented Donatella Sciuto,

Rector of the Politecnico di Milano. “The impact of an events

63

Furnishing Fabric Fashion

system of this caliber calls for a careful capacity for analysis, understanding and

re-elaboration that brings together a wide range of stakeholders, data and tools to

draw up concrete interventions, policies and co-constructed models of governance”.

“The appointment with the Salone del Mobile.Milano represents the culmination of a

path that, every year, wood-furniture companies undertake, in order to maintain the

leadership recognized to them at the global level. For our industrial fabric, composed

of a multiplicity of companies, including small and very small ones, participation in

the Salone del Mobile has an unparalleled strategic value, as a showcase capable of

attracting the world of design to the Lombard capital. An absolute unicum of which

our companies are the driving force and at the same time, the end user, because the

primary objective of our fair is to allow Made in Italy design to continue to export to

the world, open up to new markets and weigh ever more heavily on Italian manufacturing,”

says Claudio Feltrin, President of FederlegnoArredo. “The strong link with the

city of Milan is one of the characteristics that have made Salone del Mobile great in

the world. And this ability to integrate the trade fair business with cultural events has

set the standard, also thanks to a city that is open and able to enhance its excellence.

An initiative like today’s perfectly hits the mark: bringing together all the energies

that are directly or indirectly involved in Milan’s richest and liveliest week. FederlegnoArredo

is ready to play its part so that the dialogue between those who create

business and those who animate the city is increasingly synergistic.”

upcoming color trends. The Dutch expert offers a wealth of insights, particularly

for emerging talents in the interior decoration industry. Explore the

following ideas to discover the trendiest possibilities that lie ahead.

INTRODUCTION

In these times of turmoil that are defined by uncertainty, disruption in the supply

chain, war, inflation, climate-, and energy crisis, we have a strong need for

consolation, wellbeing, and color.

Our interest in color is evident and has grown. Artificial Intelligence is important

and will gain more importance. Many companies are taking their responsibility

as to sustainability issues, many alternative materials are available, derived from

natural waste. Or they recycle. We need to make more conscious choices in

production, consuming and our way of life. In the interior, shapes have become

rounder and curvier, we see ridges and ribs. Texture and imperfections, tactility,

warmer and earthy colors are important. Sometimes primitive influences in

shapes and materials are applied. Organic ideas are opposed to artificiality and

technology. Colors should be mixed among the themes. Acoustic solutions are

important.

1. WARM AND GROUNDED

The first theme is called “Warm and Grounded”. It is a timeless direction, with

a need for comfort and wellbeing. As foreseen, colour has become much more

important. In this theme we will see in the future more colours that are influenced

by nature in warm earthy colours. The shapes are voluminous, round and

friendly. The design is simple, functional, fluid, organic, quiet without superfluous

details. A lot of attention is given to sustainability and longevity, especially

for materials and for production methods. Alternative natural

materials are used, such as fungi and leather made of fruit waste, seaweed,

corn, banana, recycled pet bottles, paper, coffee grind, etc. etc. But also, hard

materials such as marble and travertine. The materials are quite heavy textured,

we see bouclé and tweed, but also cuddly materials such as mohair, fake fur and

wool. Textiles are important to convey this need for softness. We see high/low

effects through tufting, loops, and fringes. Carpets, in unexpected shapes, are

used also on the walls. Wallpaper and murals in colour blocking and rounded

abstract shapes are important. Furniture should be versatile. Artificial intelligence

has become an important factor in visualization of the interiors. 3-D

printed decorative objects play a role. Silver coloured objects make a comeback.

2. REFLECTIONS AND TRANSPARENCY

The second theme is called “Reflections and Transparency”. It is a modern, innovative

direction, with phantasy and surreal effects. Sometimes it looks artificial.

The materials that are used, contribute to that. They are often man-made, such

as glass, Perspex, polyester resin and plastic. Also recycled polyester is applied.

Transparency, special gradient effects and shifts of colour give a modern touch

to the interior. It is often associated with light effects, sometimes with an acid or

neon colour touch to convey a specific effect. In the prints we see for instance

water colour effects and clouds, but also at random spots and stains and marble

effects. Often the patterns are playful and whimsical, curtains are often transparent

and executed in gradients. As part of the unreal-like atmosphere, we see

more and more renderings with artificial intelligence. It is sometimes difficult

to distinguish fake from real. Also, gradients, iridescence, and the play with

transparent layers are important. In the architecture we see arches, circles and

rounded shapes. We see ridges and serrated shapes. Geometry, stripes, stylized

patterns, and hand painted patterns are applied on fabrics and carpets. Murals

are popular. Acoustic products play an important role and are also used as room

divider and are made of recycled pet felt. We will see a lot of 3-D printed objects

such as vases etc. There is interest in vegetable dyes.

3. CROSSOVER CREATIVITY

In this styling direction “Crossover Creativity” we notice that the attention for

hand crafted products has grown. One-of-a-kind products, preferably with imperfections,

wabi sabi, are valued and add character and personality to an interior.

It also tells the story of the resident. Traditional techniques are appreciated

such as ikat, shibori, tie & dye, kilims etc. We see new interpretations of these

century-old techniques, for instance in unexpected combinations or different

applications. Natural materials are in demand, such as wood, cork and bamboo,

raffia, rattan, terra cotta, linen, hemp etc. We love the irregularities that show in

the application of the materials, the unevenness and unpredictability, caused by

chance. The expressions of different cultures with their local materials, skills and

knowledge are blended into a highly personal interior, with a bohemian character.

Especially the handwork from Morocco and in general from Africa shows

in carpets, textiles, wicker work and ceramics to name a few. As in other styling

directions textures are appreciated here too. Handmade cushions show embroideries,

fringes, tassels and are hand tufted. Products from recycled materials or

other conscious sources, will gain importance. We see sometimes archaic and

primitive shapes. We also see tribal products such as masks.

4. COLOUR CLASH

This style direction “Color Clash” is about bright, clear, acid colors, that are

often applied in a single product, especially small furniture, accessories,

and outdoor products. They are often too bright and overwhelming to

apply in an interior, although they may be used in wallcoverings as an eyecatcher.

But they are mainly used for decorative accessories that stand out,

such as carpets or textile wall hangings, vases, a single piece of furniture

etc.

They look nice in multicolor effects. We see influences from Modern Art,

Bauhaus, but also, more playful and whimsical art movements such as

Memphis. We see ridges, serrated edges and bubbles. Color blocking is

important. The emphasis is on man-made materials such as glass, Perspex,

acrylic, polyester resin and plastic. Graphic effects, sometimes in black

and white, are important, such as stripes, checkerboards, enlarged pixels,

facets and geometric patterns. All kinds of light effects play a role, we see

lenticular materials, and application and integration of adaptable colored

Led’s. In the architecture we will see, also in this style direction, more

rounded shapes, such as arches or circles. Renderings with Augmented

Reality and Artificial Intelligence will become more and more important.

Small furniture such as side tables and stools are important to adapt to

different situations in a versatile interior. Many graphical prints can be

combined.

5. WONDERS OF NATURE

In the styling direction “Wonders of Nature” we see how issues such as care

for the environment, sustainability, conscious consuming, and the concern for

climate change are the drivers behind this theme. We are trying to diminish our

ecological footprint by using alternative materials such as fungi, corn, banana

leaf, bamboo, cardboard, vegan leather and using food waste such as coffee

grind. Renewable natural materials such as linen, hemp, raffia, rattan, wood

and recycling are a must. Flora and fauna are depicted in wallcoverings, posters,

cushions, and other decorative products. We see plants, foliage, insects, birds,

butterflies, or products with a nostalgic association. We see a glorification of

wild nature sometimes from the past, with exotic trees and plants,

plantations with palm trees, exotic birds and flowers, tigers, monkey’s, jaguars,

but also creatures of the sea. Murals show more romantic images of historical

Mediterranean landscapes with pine trees. We enjoy the soothing and calming

effects of the color green, also for paint. Botanical prints are popular, with

pictures from natural history books. Murals are very important. Carpets and

textile wall hangings take on unexpected shapes. Textures with tufting, high/ low

reliefs are important. Green colors are often combined with dusty pink and terra

shades. Tiles will be applied in interiors too.

6. ECLECTIC TREASURES

In this last direction “Eclectic Treasures” the inspiration comes from opulence,

luxury, glamour, nostalgia and history. Sometimes history with a

humorous twist. Also, Bohemian influences play a role. Gold, and other

shiny metallics such as copper in small touches or thin lines, play a role. Use

ocher from other themes for this. The curiosity cabinet continues to play an

important role. We see ideas from Natural History books, science, botanical

prints, collections, and discoveries from the animal kingdom and nature,

stuffed animals, rare precious stones, glass domes, corals, and shells, fragments

of classic statues from the Greek and Roman era. Animals are depicted

as humans. There also can be a modern approach with bright light effects

against a dark background, iridescence, aurora borealis and oil spots effects.

Mid-Century furniture is important, especially in velvet with a golden or copper

accent, and fringes for a dramatic effect. Leather and welded materials

are applied. Dark, rich colors as paint give a moody atmosphere. Precious

stones such as marble, travertine, and tiger eye are popular: real, as veneer

or as imitation. Acoustic properties remain important. Embroideries, velvets,

jacquards, and traditional motifs play a role in fabrics. We see rhythm, irregular

lines and zigzag patterns come forward in the contrast between black and

white. Brown and grey work well together.
