BY RELUCTANT GENIUS
Over the last few years, there has been no one more
polarizing than the man on this month’s cover. From creating
cutting edge automobiles and underground tunnels to
revamping and energizing our space program it seems the
sky is the limit. Hate him or love him one thing is for sure;
his name is known worldwide and the possibilities of what
he may do in the near future are endless. There is no doubt
that he is a genius, but there’s also no doubt that quite a bit
of controversy follows wherever he goes. Is he a modern day
da Vinci or is he what some call a modern day devil. Let’s compare the two and see what we come up with.
Elon Musk and Leonardo da Vinci are two figures who epitomize the spirit of innovation and creativity in
their respective eras. While da Vinci, a Renaissance polymath, mastered a multitude of disciplines—art,
science, engineering—Musk embodies a modern-day entrepreneurial zeal, pushing the boundaries of
technology with ventures like SpaceX and Tesla. Both individuals share a
relentless curiosity and a drive to challenge the status quo, often envisioning
futures that others deem impossible.
However, the comparison takes a darker turn when introducing the figure of
the devil. Both Musk and da Vinci have faced criticism and skepticism,
sometimes being labeled as controversial or morally ambiguous in their
pursuits. Da Vinci, with his secretive nature and
enigmatic persona, could be seen as embodying
the devil's allure—captivating yet elusive. Musk,
too, has been accused of hubris and reckless
ambition, traits that echo the archetypal devil’s
temptation to overreach and disrupt.
In essence, while Musk and da Vinci represent the
pinnacle of human creativity and ingenuity, the devil’s shadow looms as a
reminder of the ethical dilemmas that accompany such extraordinary
ambition. Each figure, in their own right, serves as a reflection of humanity’s
dual capacity for brilliance and folly.
Over the next decade or two ultimately we will find out just what Mr. Musk has in store for mankind.
Whether it be colonizing Mars, flying automobiles, or robots for all.
One thing is for sure; the future is limitless and won’t be boring.

As Robert Eggers' “Nosferatu” opens, lonely, adolescent Ellen (Johnny Depp's daughter, Lilly-Rose) is praying for a spirit to bring a love
into her life. Be careful what you pray for: She falls into a dream-state where she's sexually assaulted. The dream is so traumatic, it
causes a seizure and haunts her for the rest of her life. In his second book, 1971's “A Separate Reality” (categorized as non-fiction, but for
which there has always been and still is significant debate as to its authenticity), Carlos Castaneda, a Man of Knowledge (a Brujo or
Sorcerer) who apprenticed under Yaqui Indian Man of Knowledge Don Juan Matus, states that dreams are A Separate Reality. Was it a
dream? Was it reality? Or is Eggers telling us that dreams can manifest in reality?
In the early summer of '66, I was 6 years old, about to turn 7 in Waterbury CT. One night, I had my first very terrifying nightmare. I was
chased from our backyard by the skeleton and partial muscle system of a huge, sabre-tooth black panther. How I knew it was a black
panther, at 7, given its skinless, fur-less body, remains a mystery to me. But it was! The vicious, evil cat chased me from my backyard all
the way to the Grand Canyon, creeping ever closer to me as I ran In slow motion, then magically teleported ahead 20 or 30 yards before he
gained distance on me again....over and over...and over...and over again. When I finally reached the landmark, he – and yes, he is a male
– was on my heels. Rather than face the agony of his enormous, razor-sharp maxillary canines, I jumped...presumably to my death; after
plummeting for what seemed like a minute..I awoke...in a horrible, cold sweat...shivering...and crying! Mom had to console me for much
of the rest of the night, so frightened was I to go back to sleep. But I did. Sabre-Tooth, as I've come to call him is A Separate Reality
dream cat. The dream has never fully left my subconsciousness, appearing usually in times of stress to this day. Having studied Carlos to
the point of considering myself, spiritually, a Castanedan, I have a strong ability to control my dreams; to influence them; particularly
my ability to fly. But I can also defend myself from Sabre-Tooth with a concentrated, Jedi-like wave of my right arm and hand: “Sabre-
Tooth, BE GONE!”. Sabre-Tooth didn't return for some time after that. But one day, as Mom and I were were watching the Afternoon
Movie together, I was worried that he would. The film was 1931's Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi. When I went to bed that night, I slept
peacefully. That comforted me. “You are not afraid of vampires.”, I said to myself when I awoke. I decided I wanted to be Bela's Count
Dracula for Halloween that year, from Tod Browning's adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel from 1897.
That novel was also the basis for a silent vampire feature film released 9 years earlier than the Lugosi film, Henrik Galeen's “Nosferatu:
A Symphony of Horror”, with its iconic long-nailed, antagonist, German Expressionist title character. Galeen's silent film is, in turn, the
basis for Robert Eggers' “Nosferatu”, which is very much a German Expressionist-style piece. It's color is so muted it's almost black and
white. After the opening sequence, we find Ellen, married to real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult). It's Wisborg, Germany in
1838. Like your ace-cub reporter, Ellen's nightmares continue. Thomas' boss, Herr Knock (Simon McBurney), assigns him to facilitate the
sale of rundown Grünewald Manor to Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård). The castle is secluded in the Carpathian Alps – TRANSYLVANIA!!!
Despite his reluctance to leave his wife, knowing she struggles with her mental health, Thomas is drawn to Grünewald, where he shall
meet the Count and arrange the sale. Willam Defoe as Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz, an expert in the occult, mysticism and
vampires rounds out the main cast.
I initially felt, and still feel as I write this review some 24 hours later on 12/26, that the film is not well-paced, particularly given its
daunting 132 minute running time. But I'm haunted by it – as if it were Sabre-Tooth, the skeleton and partial muscle system sabre-tooth
black panther of my nightmares. A 21st Century German Expressionist film is indeed rare, if not completely unprecedented. I saw on
Christmas Day, its opening. It was well-attended. It has already made back almost 1/4 of of its $50 million budget. My rating yesterday
upon leaving was 3 Stars. My rating today: 4 Stars! Definitely worth seeing. But BEWARE: It is dark...German Expressionistic...Sabre-
Toothed!
