Plan Your Getaway to Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania – The Great American Getaway is the new state travel slogan unveiled
by Governor Josh Shapiro last year. The Commonwealth is definitely a great place to
get away. There are plenty of places to see and activities to participate in while visiting
our beautiful Commonwealth. From quaint small towns to large cities; historical sites,
sports and concert venues; state parks and forests; campgrounds, resorts and much
more, there’s a lot to take in while traveling in your RV.
This annual issue of EXPLORE Pennsylvania provides great information for travelers
wanting to escape the crowds for a quiet, peaceful experience. Shari Galiardi and
David “Hutch” Hutchison, known as Freedom in a Can, have traveled the country in
their tiny travel trailer and share their experiences in the article “Boondocking Made
Simple.” They touch on important topics such as utilizing solar panels to power your
RV; safety tips to use while camping in the wilderness, and leaving the area as you
found it. Freedom in a Can’s tips will help you better enjoy your experience.
Pennsylvania is home to some unique sites. From Erie Bluffs State Park and Pittsburgh’s
inclines to ringing rocks and coal mine tours, visitors are sure to learn about the
Commonwealth’s history, natural wonders and beautiful landscape. Check out the
article on 12 unique destinations for suggestions.
Also in this issue, Trey Selman of the RV Safety and Education Foundation offers
advice on matching a trailer to a truck. Having the correct vehicle to tow the weight
of your RV is critical to your safety. When you’re ready to buy or upgrade your RV,
check out our member listing to find an RV dealer near you. We also have you covered
if you are looking for a campground. Our campground directory pages list our

TRENDS
at America’s Largest RV Show®
Curious about the newest trends and innovations in RVs?
America’s Largest RV Show® in Hershey, Pennsylvania is the
perfect location to see newest RV models. The 2025 show is
set for September 10-14, 2025 at the GIANT CenterSM.
America’s Largest RV Show®, hosted by the Pennsylvania
Recreation Vehicle and Camping Association (PRVCA), features
40 manufacturers and 35 dealers exhibiting more than 1,500 new
RVs. In one, convenient location, consumers can see a full range
of RVs from the small pop-up campers and travel trailers to luxurious
Class A motorhomes, rugged off-grid ready RVs, destination travel
trailers and park models.
The newest trends in design and technology for RVers are on
display at this manufacturer show. Some manufacturers use the
show to get the first consumer feedback on their newest models.
Long gone are the days of boring dark brown and beige interiors.
In 2025, RV manufacturers feature interior designs with white or
painted cabinets, conventional home lighting, open floor plans,
desk space to work and study, innovative storage space and back
porches. The new models feature solar panels, modern appliances,
and advanced climate control systems.
The smallest RVs offer an upgrade from tent camping and have
developed ways to incorporate portable kitchens, toilets and
sometimes showers for convenience and comfort. While the
largest Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels offer all the
comforts of a luxurious home, including spa-like bathrooms,
full size appliances, advanced home entertainment systems,
washer/dryer units, smart remote monitoring systems and more.
Last year, America’s Largest RV Show featured an RV designed
specifically for longer off-grid stays. These RVs are built rugged
with huge tires to travel off the beaten path. The typical RVer may
not be going off-grid for extended periods of time, but for those
seeking a higher-level adventure these niche RVs are designed for
them. They are built on a truck chassis with a diesel engine and
are powered with lithium-ion batteries and rooftop solar panels.
This RV also featured a 20,000 lb. winch, just in case you get stuck
off the road.
10 | EXPLORE Pennsylvania 2025
Destination RVs attracted a lot of attention in 2024. These large
travel trailers are not as big as a park model, so they don’t require
a special CDL license to drive them. However, they are similarly
designed to be driven to a destination for the season and are
more like a home. In addition to the master bedroom, they feature
loft bedrooms to sleep more people; kitchens with islands and
full-size appliances; fireplaces, additional bathrooms and a washer
and dryer.
While you’re checking out the latest in RV design and technology,
America’s Largest RV Show offers education to help you learn
more about RVing. Professional speakers present seminars
designed for everyone from the novice to seasoned RVer. Topics
include how to buy an RV, maintaining your RV, proper towing,
safety, insurance, travel destinations, full-time RVing and more.
Even if you’re not in the market for a new RV, there are many
vendors selling RV products and services, accessories and
camping equipment, and providing information on campgrounds
and vacation destinations.
America’s Largest RV Show is a must for consumers who want to
stay in-tuned to the latest advancements in RVs. Mark September
10-14, 2025 on your calendar to attend. Tickets go on sale in June
at largestRVshow.com. Visit the website and follow the Facebook

MORE OF WHAT MATTERS
Hitch’n Up
By Trey Selman, RV Safety & Education Foundation
Experiencing the beauty of creation and the joy of sharing time
with family and friends are primary motives that fuel RV travel. The
journey, destinations, people, and diverse situations encountered
are the substance of our life’s story. With weights ranging from
a few hundred pounds up to 25 tons, RV trailers provide a wide
range of options to experience the diverse ways to travel in an RV
and are a more economic pathway to enter the RV lifestyle.
The flexibility of an RV trailer is often preferred because the tow
vehicle can be separated to easily explore destinations. As with
most choices, there are concessions that must be considered. RV
trailers require a tow vehicle to move around the country and safely
matching that tow vehicle to a desired towed home on wheels is
an important responsibility RV owners must carefully consider.
The following discussion is a broad survey of basic considerations
needed to guide a more detailed study to plan exciting adventures
with an RV trailer as a traveling home on wheels.
A Little about Trailer Weight
Many RV trailers are very comfortable and have the same or
similar amenities that are found in a home. However, there are a
few important differences. The obvious difference is that these
RV houses are designed to frequently move from one location to
another, so the foundation is not set permanently on solid ground.
Instead, the RV trailer foundation is a metal frame with a vehicle
suspension attached underneath for moving the house to the next
destination. This different type of foundation can be overloaded
and break down if too much weight is placed on it. This requires
a different understanding of the construction of the vehicle and
more importantly what can be loaded in the vehicle. In a house,
storage is often thought of in terms of space or volume. The limitation
is the pocketbook, and the amount of space located inside
the house to collect and store stuff. In a vehicle, thinking needs
to shift to weight over space because the vehicle foundation will
only carry and move so much stuff before it starts to show signs of
fatigue and early wear.
prvca.org | largestRVshow.com
Tow Vehicle
When a trailer is attached to a motorized vehicle, this articulated
marriage of vehicles forms a single combination vehicle. The
truck, SUV, car or motorcycle is the primary vehicle when it
comes to determining the safety of moving this newly formed
combination vehicle from one location to another. Mechanical
capability, safety, and cost help direct and focus decisions about
how to travel in an RV trailer. It is always good to get counsel and
insight from others, but it must be understood that the owner of
the vehicle is responsible for the proper operation of the vehicle as
exploration and travel is done across the highways and byways of
America. The owner, therefore, should determine if the tow vehicle
is appropriate for towing the desired RV trailer.
One simple principle to keep in mind is that the bigger the RV
trailer, the bigger the tow vehicle needs to be to safely tow that RV
trailer. This seems apparent, but conflicting desires often distort
the thinking process. The space and amenities in that larger RV
trailer are wonderful, but the idea of a bigger tow vehicle is not
always desired. When torn between these two items, often
rationalization creeps in. It then becomes easier to quickly listen
to sales pitches that fit a desired ideal and the temptation is to
stop digging deeper to make sure the two vehicles are really a
good fit. The consequence of bypassing a more detailed careful
look is the increased risk of driving around in a truck or SUV that
does not have the ability to safely move, stop, or carry the weight
of the combination vehicle properly. Thorough study should go
well beyond the truck or RV salesman’s declaration that this truck
is OK to tow that RV trailer. The first step is knowing that tow vehicle
manufacturers provide information about the towing capability of
the vehicle. Collecting that information and understanding each
piece of information is important to make wise decisions throughout
this process.

Hitch’n Up: Properly Matching your tow vehicle & RV
Moving it Down the Road
The power to control moving the weight of the loaded combination
vehicle from one location to another is one of the two major
weight issues involved with towing. Sufficient power is needed
to move and stop this weight over the roads, over the mountains,
through the wind, in the heat of summer, and through crowded
streets. The tow vehicle must be able to achieve this without
damaging the vehicle components that initiate, maintain, and
control that power. Overheating the engine, transmission, gears,
and exceeding the brake limits of the vehicle are concerns of the
towing weight limit.
Carrying Weight
Another important vehicle weight concern is the ability of the tow
vehicle to carry the total loaded vehicle weight on its frame and
suspension. Passenger and occupant are terms that describe the
most valuable and special type of loaded item on a vehicle. Cargo
is a term that describes all the other stuff that might be loaded
on a vehicle. Passengers and every cargo item add weight to the
vehicle’s weight bearing components. Big items are usually the
focus of attention when cargo weight is considered but every
single item has weight, and it accumulates more than expected.
The frame and suspension can only carry so much weight before
their integrity is compromised. So, the vehicle manufacturer sets
an overall maximum allowable weight for each vehicle once it is
loaded with all the passengers and their stuff. When the loaded
vehicle weight exceeds the limit that is set by the manufacturer,
the vehicle is overloaded and weight bearing components may
be stressed beyond their design. The vehicle is then subject to
greater risk of component failure and is more difficult to operate.
Overloading often does not cause immediate component failure,
however, as time passes component fatigue will shorten the life
of the vehicle, add cost in repairs, and increase the risk of failure
to suspension and frame components. Springs may be compressed
beyond their limits and cease to function properly. Frame members
and joints may sag or fracture. Overloading the vehicle also reduces
braking distance, which is a driving safety concern.
Carrying it on the Backend
Most of the weight of the trailer is carried on the trailer axles
but some of the weight of the trailer is loaded on the tow vehicle
when the trailer is hitched to the tow vehicle. This portion of the
weight of the trailer is called tongue weight or pin weight depending
on the type of hitching system. The tongue or pin weight is still
part of the weight of the trailer since it is on the frame of the trailer,
but it also becomes cargo weight that is loaded on the rear of
the tow vehicle. Since this weight is added to the rear of the tow
vehicle, the rear axle components are more subject to overloading
resulting in a potentially shortened lifespan. Tires are arguably the
most important axle component and have specific weight ratings
marked on the sidewall. Overloaded tires are the primary reason
for tire failure. It is important to inspect tires for damage and wear,
and to faithfully check the inflation pressure.
prvca.org | largestRVshow.com
Collect, Measure, and Compare
Understanding and collecting weight rating information about
the tow vehicle and the trailer is the first step to the study and
planning of matching a tow vehicle and trailer. Both the tow
vehicle and trailer manufacturers set overall vehicle and individual
axle weight ratings which define the maximum limit of the loaded
vehicle weight. If the motorized vehicle can tow a trailer, the
vehicle manufacturer provides a rating for the loaded weight of
the combination vehicle to primarily protect the drive line
components from damage caused by overheating. Once these
allowable limits for the vehicle are collected, the next step is to
measure or reasonably assess the loaded weight of each vehicle.
Finally, the measurements or estimates will need to be compared
to the vehicle ratings to make sure that none of the ratings are
exceeded.
When an RV trailer is considered as the dwelling for our travel
adventures, it is imperative to carefully consider the appropriate
tow vehicle for the trailer. Does it have enough power to safely
control the combination vehicle to explore beautiful places, meet
new people, and visit family and friends? Does it have enough
strength to carry family and belongings so that the wonder and
beauty of this grand country may be experienced to its fullest?

BOONDOCKING
Made Simple
By Shari Galiardi & David “Hutch” Hutchison, Freedom in a Can
What if you could spend less than $150 on camping fees while crossing the nation
in your RV? Boondocking, dry camping, off-grid RVing, or overlanding…whatever
you choose to call it, this type of camping on our public land is low cost, low stress,
and requires zero reservations. It’s the #1 way to cut costs on your next RV road trip,
rather than spending $50 to $100 per night for electric and water hook-ups. While still
cheaper than a night in a hotel, camping fees on a long RV road trip can add up quickly.

Where to Find Inexpensive & Free Camping?
These are our go-to resources for information about free, dispersed
camping and inexpensive, off-grid campgrounds, as well as some
unique boondocking. Most locations have stay limits, so pay close
attention to those details. Please leave every place BETTER than
you found it by following Leave No Trace!
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service
(USFS) offer numerous options from semi-developed campgrounds
(small fee) to dispersed camping with nothing but open
land (usually free). Being self-contained is key as services may
(or may not) include a potable water tap, and vault toilets, but rarely
include hook-ups. While most of the BLM land is found out west,
national forests are located throughout the country. Stay limits are
typically 14-21 days. Always check the local regulations. If you are
62 or older or are disabled, getting an “America the Beautiful”
Senior or Access Pass gives you half-off camping on ALL federal
properties!
• BLM: Camping information is available (by state) online, and in
person at BLM offices or any visitor’s centers. Paper copies come
in handy when the data signal is low.
(blm.gov/programs/recreation/camping)
• USFS: This website offers information about 157 U.S. national
forest and grassland campgrounds. This free resource doesn’t
integrate with your mapping app, so you have to do some
navigation. USFS offices and visitor’s centers also often have
paper resources for campers. (fs.usda.gov)
• State Lands: In addition to federal agencies, some states
(especially out west), offer free or low-cost camping.
• iOverlander is one of the original crowd-sourced apps that
helps you find everything from a spot on the side of the highway
to dispersed camping areas to casinos or parking lots. Always
read reviews before you head to the pinned location on the map
as restrictions change frequently and some could be marked as
closed! Basic app = free. iOverlander2 = annual fee.

• The Dyrt is a comprehensive campground locator app, offering
the most listings of any app across the U.S. Read reviews and see
photos/videos from real people. Use the helpful filters to find free
and inexpensive campgrounds, as well as dispersed areas.
Search regions and create lists to plan out your next camping
trip, book reservable sites, and get discounts. Basic app = Free;
The Dyrt PRO version offers some bonus features that more than
make up for the small annual fee.
• Boondockers Welcome is a collection of 3,600+ people across
the U.S. and Canada who love to offer their driveway, land, farm,
etc. to other self-contained RVers for free. Some hosts do
offer water & electrical hook-ups for a nominal fee, as well as
local knowledge and new friendships. Use the availability
calendar on the app to request a night’s stay (or up to five nights,
depending on the host). Annual fee.
• Harvest Hosts is a network of wineries, breweries, distilleries,
farms, and attractions that invite self-contained RVers to stay in
more than 5,200 locations across the U.S. and Canada. The
annual fee provides unlimited access and the ability to make
reservations through the app. Members are encouraged to
purchase at least $30 of products offered by the host, which is
a great way to support the small business allowing you to park
there. Select hosts now offer up to four extra nights as well as
hook-ups (fees may apply). Annual fee.
• Social Media: Many Facebook groups have members who
post information about free and dispersed camping options.
Just search Facebook with keywords such as boondocking,

What Do You
Really Need to
Boondock?
By Shari Galiardi & David “Hutch” Hutchison,
Freedom in a Can
In addition to thinking about where to park your
RV, you’ll want to consider how to meet your
essential needs. It’s like Maslow’s Hierarchy, but
while eating dehydrated meals and drinking
bottled water might be surviving, it’s definitely
not thriving.
Electricity
According to Our World in Data, solar power offers the least expensive,
safest, and least polluting source of energy – and you’re less likely
to offend your neighbors with solar panels than firing up a noisy
gas generator. With many different solar panel options, and high
efficiency LiFePO4 batteries, an effective off-grid solar powered
system is within reach of every RVer. Learn how to size a system
using our solar system sizing worksheet.
(freedominacan.com/solar-powered-by-renogy)
Water
Most RVs have water storage tanks, but if you use water like at
home, they won’t last long. Most freshwater rivers and lakes in
North America are non-potable due to harmful bacteria and viruses.
However, this water can typically be treated making it safe for
consumption. Here are a few trusted ways:
• Boil: Bringing water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute will kill all
viruses and bacteria.
• Filter: Backcountry water filters remove harmful bacteria, though
not always viruses because of their extremely small size.
• Chemical: Iodine tablets, or other water purification tablets, are
extremely effective against bacteria and viruses.
Untreated water can be used for dishwashing, laundry, or personal
hygiene. If you’re nervous about untreated dishwashing water, use
a small amount of bleach in the rinse water and allow dishes to
fully dry.
Waste Management
Many RVs include a bathroom with gray and black water storage
tanks, and many of the apps listed on the previous page include
dump station and water refill icons to help you find them. While
holding tanks can limit your boondocking, there are other ways to
manage water/waste:
• Portable toilets with bag liners that contain chemicals
and gelling agents can provide an effective way to collect and
dispose of waste.
• Shower less frequently and wash hands outside
with biodegradable soap.
• Three stacking bins for dishwashing (wash, rinse, and sanitizing
bleach solution) maximizes space and minimizes water. Sieve
out any food particles before scattering water outside.
Food Storage
Many RVs on the market come with fridges that can either run on
propane or DC battery power. If you are going to be camping on
public land for up to two weeks, consider installing an additional 12V
Fridge/Freezer (youtube.com/shorts/kBcJWUnjn68) which uses
very minimal power! While it’s important to keep our food safe for
consumption, preventing the local residents from sampling it is of
equal concern. Bears can be a concern in some areas, but it’s the
“micro-bears” that often do the most damage. Rodents and birds
can be among the most voracious infiltrators.
Follow these steps for safe storage:
• Keep food in a hard sided container, inside the rig or vehicle.
• Never leave unattended food outside.
• Clean up all food waste, including micro-trash, even if it’s
biodegradable. Use a tablecloth to contain food for proper
disposal.

Shari + Hutch + Hamlet
In 2012, Shari Galiardi & David
Hutchison left behind careers
and a comfortable home in North
Carolina to travel with the vintage
camper trailer they lovingly restored,
outfitted with solar, and named
“Hamlet.” What began as a short
break from careers and responsibility
quickly turned into a love affair with roadlife. They
have parlayed their higher education backgrounds, desire for
life-long learning, and thirst for adventure travel into writing,
photography, video production, and public speaking gigs
from coast to coast. Known to their friends as simply Shari &

Safety
Each person has a different threshold
for their own safety. Ours generally
assumes that where there’s
more people, there’s more problems.
We don’t typically boondock
in urban areas for more than one
night. We gravitate to remote areas
that feel more secluded, and safe.
Keep in mind that most people are
there for the same reason as you.
Some basic tips:
• Look at the camping area in daylight; if it’s heavily used,

Pennsylvania attractions
Pennsylvania has an abundance
of attractions to visit. From scenic views
and trails from stunning venues and
events to antique modes of transportation,
there’s always something to do and see
in the Commonwealth. For this issue of
EXPLORE Pennsylvania, we’ve selected
a few unique attractions you may not
have visited. Add them to your list of
travel experiences in Pennsylvania and
plan your Great American Getaway today!
Pittsburgh Inclines
Pittsburgh was once home to nearly two dozen inclines, which
helped transport people and goods to the neighborhoods on the
city’s steep hills. Today, it has two inclines (funicular railways)
open to visitors. They still transport people and serve as a unique
tourist attraction.
1
Duquesne Incline
1197 W. Carson Street, Pittsburgh | duquesneincline.org
The Duquesne Incline opened in 1877 and was restored by a
group of local residents in 1963. It is one of the few remaining
inclines in the country and features its original, wood cable cars.
The Incline’s upper station features a museum of Pittsburgh history
with information and photos on inclines from around the world.
The incline is part of Pittsburgh’s public transportation system
and is open 365 days a year from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. It only
accepts cash and it must be the exact fare. There is a change
machine available. There are no reservations or advance tickets.
28 | EXPLORE Pennsylvania 2025
2
Monongahela Incline
8 Grandview Avenue, Port Authority of Allegheny County,
Pittsburgh, PA | monongahelaincline.com
If you’re looking for the best view of the city, take the Monongahela
Incline up to Mount Washington, formerly known as “coal hill.” Built
in 1870, it was the first passenger funicular railway in the U.S. and
transported workers up and down “Coal Hill.”
The Monongahela Incline is on The National Register of Historic
Places and was recently refurbished. It is open Monday – Saturday
from 5:30 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. & Sundays and holidays 8:45 a.m. to
midnight. Check the website for latest fare information and bring
exact change to avoid the lines and the ticket machine. Local
residents use the incline for transportation, so try to visit during
non rush-hour times.
At the top, take a short walk to Shiloh Street to enjoy some great
restaurants and Difiore’s Ice Cream Shop. There you’ll get a taste
of some “real” Pittsburgh cuisine.

Full-time RVing
ROAD
SCHOOL
Full-time RV families are making sure their
children are educated and learning life
skills on the road. Find out how they make
it work.
By Elizabeth Peroni
PRVCA Communications Director
For young families who live and work
full-time in their RVs, road school
is an important part of their daily
schedule. Road schooling is a form
of home schooling where families
educate their children on the road
while traveling to different destinations
in their RV. It provides freedom and
flexibility for full-time RVers without the
constraints of traditional classrooms.
There are several options for road
schooling and it can look different for
individual families.
Chris and Amanda Stocker (@Type1Detour) started full-time RV
travel with their two daughters 3 ½ years ago. Their oldest daughter,
9, started kindergarten in 2020 as schools were dealing with the
pandemic. Since she has Type 1 diabetes, they had concerns about
her attending a traditional school. In addition, they witnessed
their friends dealing with the chaos of teachers and parents trying
to figure out virtual learning. After researching their options, the
Stockers selected an online school, Commonwealth Charter
Academy, based in Pennsylvania.
In 2021, they started their full-time RV journey. Their daughter’s
education was seamless as she continued her online school.
“She loves it and is very tech savvy,” Amanda Stocker says. “She
really thrives learning online.”
Last fall, their youngest daughter started kindergarten in the same
school, and she is also doing well.
“It is totally flexible, so it works well with our lifestyle and our
schedule,” Amanda Stocker says. “It’s kind of a hybrid between
32 | EXPLORE Pennsylvania 2025

family navigating Road School. (Find them @type1detour on
social media and type1detour.com)
traditional school and totally online school. They have live teachers
and classmates. They can hop on at a certain time and do the
lesson together, or if we’re out doing something, or we have
something planned that day, we can complete the lesson on our
time.”
The school follows the Commonwealth’s required curriculum,
standards and testing program. Like traditional schools, the girls
have recess, which offers exercise or an ice breaker game. They
try to go outside as much as possible for those activities. It also
offers both in-person and online clubs where the students can
interact with each other.
“We stay at family-friendly campgrounds,” Chris Stocker says. “We
see a lot of the same families. While they have different schools,
at the end of the day, they are out on the playground, riding bikes
and playing tag or other games.
“They get their in-person socialization just as much, if not more
than other students.”
Road School Provides Flexible Learning Schedules

The family takes advantage of the nice weather to spread
out and enjoy the outdoors. Photo courtesy of @Type1Detour.
They also participate in extra-curricular activities through Out
School (outschool.com). The website offer thousands of virtual
classes that are all taught by a certified instructor. In addition, the
Stocker’s take classes when they are in an area for an extended
amount of time. The girls recently took a tumbling class while
they were staying in Pennsylvania. That say it is also an option for
recreational sports leagues and YMCA programs.
Work and Road School
Chris Stocker is a content creator and freelance writer, so he works
in the RV while his daughters are in their classes. He says they each
have a dedicated space to do their work. He shares a desk with
his youngest daughter. If she needs the space, he goes outside to
work.
The girls can easily log onto their classes outside when the
weather permits. They also try to do their physical education
classes outside. Their flexible schedule allows them to take their
school wherever they want to go.
Amanda Stocker says making sure everyone has good headphones
is definitely key. As is, a good internet connection. They
use StarLink for their internet and their cellular networks as a
back-up. Fortunately, they don’t have too many issues with their
internet connection. Sometimes, it can be slow, especially if they
are traveling. When that happens, they log off and finish their
lesson later.
Unschooling
The Edmunds family (@TheTravelingTitans) participates in unschooling
for their road school. Unschooling is a methodology
where the student’s curiosity and interests drive what they are
learning. The term was first introduced by a teacher and author
John Holt, who was the first to question traditional schooling.
Samantha Edmunds became interested in unschooling after
reading the book “Free to Learn” by Peter Gray, a psychology and
neuroscience professor at Boston College. In his research, Grayfound
free play in childhood promotes learning, especially social
prvca.org | largestRVshow.com
Travel days can be the most difficult for road school, since Wi-Fi
connections aren’t always the best. Their cyberschool offers
the flexibility for the girls to log on at later time to complete
their assignments. Photo courtesy of @Type1Detour.
‘I want my children to love learning. That’s our
mission that they love it and they enjoy it. The
more hands-on experience they’re getting;
the more travel they’re doing; the more they’re
learning and the more they see of the world.”

@TheTravelingTitans
play with other children. According to his research, free play has
reduced significantly since 1955, and therefore, children are not
learning essential social and emotional skills and their mental
health has declined.
When the family started full-time RVing more than four years ago,
Edmunds started looking at the state requirements for home
school. All states have different requirements. She eventually
selected Texas, which doesn’t have any standardized testing or
reporting requirements. In Texas homeschool parents have the
authority to determine if their children have met the state’s high
school graduation requirements and issue a diploma.
She teaches her children, who are 7 and 5, based on what they
are interested in.
“I want my children to love learning,” she says. “That’s our mission
that they love it and they enjoy it. The more hands-on experience
they’re getting; the more travel they’re doing; the more they’re
learning and the more they see of the world.”
Edmunds is not a certified teacher; however, she is college
educated. She held a corporate job until the beginning of 2024,
when she took over the teaching duties from her husband, who
spent the last 4 ½ years as a stay-at-home dad. He recently
finished his master’s degree and is now working outside their RV
home.

RV Families Find the Best Road School Methods for
@TheTravelingTitans
They utilize the unschooling
methodology to Road School
their son and daughter.
While it’s not a strict curriculum, unschooling does require routine. The
Edmunds children get up and have breakfast and start their learning.
Samantha Edmunds plans topics she wants to teach and discusses them
with the children. She utilizes online sources such as Google Maps and
YouTube, and websites such as Reading Eggs (readingeggs.com), Time
4 Learning (time4learning.com), All About Learning (allaboutlearning.co)
and CodeSpark (codespark.com). There are many online resources that
offer valuable worksheets and other learning materials.
The children learn reading, writing, history, math, geography, science,
biology and more. Edmunds says it’s very easy to teach them about the
areas they visit. For example, if her son is interested in polar bears. They
discuss where they live and how they are different from other bears; their
fur, hibernation, geography, weather, climate and it just builds from there.
“The topics come naturally to children,” she says. “When you put kids in
an environment where they want to learn, it’s limitless. The opportunity
doesn’t stop.”
“We’ve been talking about the heart, so when we’re out hiking and
they’re out of breath, we’ll discuss oxygen, blood and the lungs,” she
says. “It all ties together.”
Find them on social media & Youtube @thetravelingtitans
If they are staying in an area for a while, they take advantage of programs
offered by home school co-ops. This winter they are joining a co-op
where the children will ski with other students.

their Children to Learn
The children are outside as much as possible. They go to
playgrounds and interact with other children at least three
times a week. As they grow, Edmunds plans to add more
volunteer work so that they will learn about giving back to
the community.
When they first decided to unschool, their families were
worried about the children’s socialization. Edmunds says
they’ve now totally flipped in their thinking.
“My kids will talk to anyone,” she says. “They will sit, listen
and eagerly learn from people. When we’re on the road,
we’re always meeting new people.”
Many public schools allow home school children to join
extra-curricular activities, so that is a possibility if they
decide they want to join an activity in the future. Or, if the
time comes that they want to join a sport, Edmunds says
they will make sure they are in an area with a quality sports
program.

Advice for Families Considering
Full-Time Travel and Road School
For others who are considering unschooling, Edmunds
says dig in and ask questions.
“Social media is a gem for this,” she says. “There are so
many resources and home school groups that you can
join.”
“Be honest about your expectations. Be flexible and be
open. One off day doesn’t translate to a week,” she relays.
“If you’re thinking about it, there are so many educational
opportunities around travel.”

“#1 know all your options,” Chris Stocker says. “Don’t get
scared away because you are afraid you can’t do it. There
are curriculums where you can go to the website and add
to cart an entire curriculum.”
“In the beginning, you just think home school and you
think of all the booklets and packets and you are doing it
with them,” Amanda Stocker says. “It can scare people off
thinking that they are solely responsible for their child’s
education.”

“I didn’t know until I started researching. This gives them
a good balance of traditional school in person mixed with

are lots of home school options out there.”
