CXC Human and Social Biology
Fifth Edition
Phil Gadd
This authoritative and comprehensive text is the fully revised and
updated version for the CXC (CSEC) syllabus of the 4th edition of
Human and Social Biology for the Tropics. This new text contains
practical work separated from the text to encourage the enquiry
approach, and the observations fully explain the results along with
the relevant theory. The text is designed to extend able pupils, but it
is constructed simply and for a low reading age, making it ideal for
mixed-ability classes.
■ Questions in the margin enable students to check their
understanding as they read
■ Multiple-choice, short answer and essay questions as set in
the examinations, are given for practice at the end of each chapter
■ Diagrams and photographs with captions illustrate important points
■ Table summaries and diagrams provide all the essential information for
less able students
Brother Man
Roger Mais
Originally published in 1954 and acclaimed around the world as one of the classics of Caribbean fi ction,
Brother Man is the tragic story of an honest Rastafarian healer caught up in a web of intrigue and betrayal
in Jamaica’s tough West Kingston slums. It is the unforgettable portrait of a ghetto saint - an ordinary man
selected by the universe to bring enlightenment to poor belittled people. It’s a story of compelling mythic
power that has stood the test of time.
The Humming-Bird Tree
Ian McDonald
Alan was too young to understand why his parents preferred him to play with the other white boys on the estate.
But gradually he learned that if he was going to meet Kaiser and Jaillin, he had to pretend he was going to meet
someone else, he had to pretend he didn’t enjoy spending time with his friends, he had to pretend he didn’t mind
when he wasn’t allowed to invite them to his party. Sometimes, horribly, the pretending became real, and Alan
found himself in betrayal of the friendship that meant so much to him.
The Macmillan Caribbean Writers (MCW) series offers a
range of writing, not only in novels, novellas and short stories
but also in non-fi ction adventures, plays for festivals
and poetry. Importantly, it provides a forum for new
literary talent - introducing the work of the next
generation of Caribbean writers as well as classic
favourites and new work by more established
authors. Macmillan commissions Caribbean
artists to produce the front cover illustrations,
which give the series a distinctive
This six-volume UNESCO General History of the Caribbean attempts to integrate the historical
experience of its peoples and societies from the earliest times to the present. The work provides a
comprehensive history of the Caribbean, centred on its people and its landscape, written as much
as possible by Caribbean historians.
Volume I: Autochthonous Societies
Editor: Professor Jalil Sued Badillo
Volume I relates the history of the origins of the earliest Caribbean peoples, and analyses their various political,
social, cultural and economic organizations over time, in and around the Caribbean region.
By identifying with a legacy which goes beyond the fi ve hundred years of colonial life, the Caribbean peoples
can begin to bind together as a region and claim a rich inheritance from the earliest cultural expressions which
emerge in this volume.
Paperback | 32pp plates | 464pp | 978-0-333-72453-8 Hardback | 978-0-333-72452-1
Volume II: New Societies - The Caribbean in the Long Sixteenth Century
Editor: Professor Peter Emmer
The subject of Volume II is the evolution of Caribbean societies between 1492 and 1650 through the intrusion
of the Europeans and Africans.
This volume examines all the ingredients for creating new societies by conquest and occupation. It looks at
the early mining and planting activities of the Spanish in Espaniola, the privateers and contraband traders
from the other European countries, the plantation societies of the Lesser Antilles, the plantation societies of
the Lesser Antilles, the extinction of the indigenous population in the Greater Antilles, the wars against the
Caribs, and the beginnings of the slave trade and slavery.
Paperback | 16 plates | 362pp | 978-0-333-72455-2 Hardback | 978-0-333-72454-5
Volume III: Slave Societies of the Caribbean
Editor: Professor Franklin Knight
Volume III looks at the various aspects of slave societies in the region from the seventeenth to the nineteenth
centuries.
Throughout the tortuous history of the Caribbean nothing exceeded in fundamental importance more than the
twin experiences of slavery and the plantation system. Together these two overlapping experiences constituted
the paramount defi ning episode of Caribbean social reality. The collective changes introduced by the Europeans
during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries represented an intricate series of transformations that
permanently altered every facet of the region.
Paperback | 16 plates | 400pp | 978-0-333-65605-1 Hardback | 978-0-333-65604-4
Volume IV: The Long Nineteenth Century
Editor: Professor Manual Moreno Fraginals
Volume IV begins with the initiation of a “free” society after slavery was abolished and thus in the eighteenth
century with the Haitian Revolution. Slavery and its destruction form merely a background. It follows that the
different parts of the Caribbean region enter the picture effectively only when they leave slavery behind and so
at varying dates, whatever sideways glances authors may have used for contextual purposes. Then after fi rmly
establishing freedom the story moves naturally to the time of the First World War and the substitution of the
United States for the Europeans in the role of overlord.
Volume V: The Caribbean in the Twentieth Century
Editor: Professor Bridget Brereton
Volume V provides an account and interpretation of the historical development of the region from around 1930
to the end of the twentieth century. Its wide-ranging study of the economic, political, religious, social and
cultural history of this period brings the series to the authorial present.
The prevalence and persistence of the plantation, the ubiquity of underemployment, the vulnerability of
dependent Caribbean economies, popular and labour protests, decolonisation and neo-colonialism are all
considered in this volume. It also explores the effect of migration, mass communications and modernisation on
the cultures of local societies.
Paperback | 792pp | 978-0-333-72459-0 Hardback | 978-0-333-72458-3
Volume VI: Methodology and Historiography of the Caribbean
Editor: Professor Barry Higman
Volume VI looks at the ways historians have written the history of the region depending on their methods on
interpretation and differing styles of communicating their fi ndings.
The fi nal part of Volume VI is a full and detailed bibliography which serves not only as a guide to the volume,
but also as an invaluable reference for the General History of the Caribbean as a whole.
The C. Everard Palmer Collection
C. Everard Palmer was born in Kendal in the Jamaican parish of Hanover.
He had his early education in the rural community after which he attended
Mico Teachers’ College in Kingston. He worked as a journalist with the Gleaner
Company before starting a career as an author. All his stories have so far
been inspired by the memories of his childhood, and though the people and
incidents are imagined they could easily have been real.
These popular works of junior fi ction are all exciting stories of life in
rural Jamaica, told with warmth, affection and insight.
Baba and Mr Big
The story, set in Jamaica like all of
Everard Palmer’s stories, is funny,
exciting – and keeps us guessing
until the end.
remembered.
previous stories. With vivid phrases
and fresh dialogue, the author brings
to life the characters of this
Jamaican village.
Philip Cash, Shirley Gordon, Gail Saunder
Sources of Bahamian History explores the past of the Bahamian islands through
contemporary evidence, with introductions and questions to help the reader to share
the experience. Written sources, which form the major part of the book, are supported
by pictorial and archaeological material to emphasize the varying perspectives of
different peoples of the Bahamian islands over the years. The use of missionary
records and newspapers offset the offi cial comment by colonial and government
agencies and allows for a Bahamas-centred emphasis.
Teacher’s Guide
See page 32 for more details on Health and Family Life Education.
Gerard Drakes Christopher Graham Mavis Fuller Barbara Fuller
Health and Family Life Education is an exciting new course for Caribbean
secondary schools. It addresses the needs of lower secondary students
and teachers for a life-skills based course refl ecting the CARICOM Regional
Curriculum Framework document but also takes into account national
syllabuses, such as those from Jamaica, Belize and Trinidad.
Health and Family Life Education meets the challenges facing Caribbean
societies today, such as the HIV and AIDS epidemic, rising levels of violence,
health and environmental problems. Each Student’s Book contains
approximately enough material for one 45 minute lesson per week over a year and each lesson
takes a double-page spread for easy use. The course can be used within dedicated Health
and Family Life Education subject lessons or more flexibly when HFLE is integrated within
other subjects, or with Form groups, Guidance and Counselling lessons or after school clubs.
There are four distinct themes or strands which are found in each of the three years:
Self and Interpersonal Relationships, Sexuality and Sexual Health, Appropriate
Eating and Fitness and Managing the Environment
Builds healthy attitudes, motivation,
values and life skills as well as
teaching information, to enable
students to better cope with the
complex world in which they will
operate as adults
Includes a CD of images from the course to be used for class discussion. The Teacher’s Guide provides sections on teaching methodologies
and strategies, participatory learning, assessment, and lesson notes for each theme and unit in each year, as well as additional information
about life skills and background factual information.
