The University of Sydney
I Manik Sharma, write this Thesis as a Non- Indigenous person and I acknowledge the acceptance I have
received to stand with pride on this land. I would like to acknowledge the First Nations people of the land.
With immense respect, I acknowledge their connection with sea, land, and sky. I acknowledge and pay
respects to the traditional custodians, elders of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from past
present and future.
The following project may talk about, quote, reference or include images of deceased people of the
Indigenous Communities. They have been included to honour and pay respects to their contribution and
efforts to our struggles, and achievements.
The use of words such as First Nations people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Indigenous
people/ communities has been done numerous times in the following project. This refers to a similar set of
communities and people and should not be misunderstood. As a Non-Indigenous person, sincere apologies
for any unknown mistakes in the writing. I have learned everything from the tradition, culture and people
and this is just my perception of things and my point of view.
This land always was, is, and always will be Aboriginal land.
Sovereignty was never ceded.

In my eight years of architectural understanding, I have realised that it is not just buildings or places, it is not just zones
or spaces, rather it is people, expressions and emotions that makes architecture the best profession and also one of the
toughest one to ace. Initially, in education, I did some really horrible projects and I understood that the quality of work
didn’t matter because the architecture wasn’t functional, later I realised the design isn’t helpful if it isn’t readable and now
I have understood that it should all be presentable, readable, functional and full of Intent for it to be called a Good design.

A way of Life
Theisi M.Arch - Individual (2024)
Liminal Nexus was an effort to raise a voice alongside the Uluru Statement from the Heart and create
an atmosphere of knowledge appreciation and accknowledgement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people’s history and culture. With Total Reset by Greg Campbell considered as a handbook
the cohort was asked to create an inspired design for rejuvenation of Jigamy farms, Pambula near
Eden at South coast NSW. We physically and virtually discussed with our clients - Twofold Aboriginal
corporation about their needs and expectations about the place and how do they want their new home
to look like.
Jigamy is at the lakeside of Pambula lake with major Oyster farming business and other services for
aboriginal youth senior citizens and it is also home for many cultural events. One such is Giiyong
festival which is one of the biggest Aboriginal festivals in Australia. This project brings out the natural
geometries and cultural stories in the First nation’s history and tries to find commons in it with Indian
(Hindu) culture. This way a connection to both countries is establish and that makes this attempt one
with my whole heart in it.
This land a part of who we are,
no stranger they can own.
Standing side by side,
we shall never be alone.
Nothing’s lost forever,
History will be told
Lest we shall forget,
Our Elders that grow old 8 .
Not forgotten (Creative Spirits)
A poem by - Michele ‘Mickey’ (Hetherington 2020)
I wake up with a happy and content face today,
As I hear birds chirping on my window bay.
Tomorrow, I shall hear myself breathing,
Someday I’ll listen to others singing.
I will listen deep enough that I connect with them,
I will sing and dance with them.
If I share my soul they shall too,
Will you be like us too?

The Seven Sisters
Charcoal and graphite art resembling positivity in Indigenous history
Some may see depth some may call it dark, I see an angel leaving
a mark.
I see a flower, I see seven.
Running from a shadow into heaven.
The picture shows them leaning into the sky
landing into safety and leaving it behind.
The little glow within us reminds us to be good,
this songline taught us to have hope and brotherhood.
Vibrations of the Universe - AUM
Charcoal and graphite art connecting Indian and Aboriginal cultural
vibrations
The sound of nothingness surrounds us.
My existence belongs to me but I belong to country.
The circle is so big and so small.
It is a tree bark, a planet and a fabric hole.
Drop a pebble in the water and you will see,
how our earth moves around the sun and how we are one with the
sea.
I became aware of my belonging,
I am the center of this world and I am nothing.
I live to be a string in the universal loom,
AUM I said in a silent room.
Site Plan
Jigamy farms is THE place to be. The proposed masterplan offers spaces
for visitors, inclusive of all living or non-living beings. Indigenous or Non-
Indigenous this farmland is Universal, accessible, entertaining, culturally
strong and educational.
Design, architecture and construction would be nothing without the people it
belongs to. Everything that builds here has the roots back to their respective
owners The thoughts and ideas are historically owned by the people and for
their people. Today We learn from the co-envisioners at Twofold aboriginal
corporation. Looking into the sentience of water and observing the patterns
in its vibrations makes me connect it with the sound of the universe. I have
learnt the true rhythm of poetic Jigamy. Aum cleanses our soul and makes
us the epicenter of the universe. “Aham Brahmasmi” I am the universe, as
Greg mentions in Total Reset. 4 (Campbell 2023)

Reimagining Waterloo South Estate
Semester 2 (Group -03) (2023)
Thanks to partners - Vivian Su & Kunal Thaker
The provision of affordable housing in Australia is one of the most pressing issues of our time. A
key part of the solution must include the delivery of more social housing. The Waterloo Estate
holds significant historical importance in this context. It was one of the early sites of intervention
by the newly-formed NSW Housing Commission shortly after World War II. Today, Waterloo
stands on the brink of another major transformation. After years of political announcements and
community frustration, a new direction has been established. The estate is set to be demolished
and rebuilt under the Waterloo Renewal Project by the NSW Land and Housing Corporation.
The redevelopment will occur in three stages: Waterloo South, Central, and North. The rezoning
of Waterloo South has been legislated, with new planning controls taking effect as of February
2023. This area covers approximately two-thirds of the estate. The plan involves demolishing
749 social housing dwellings to make way for 3,012 new dwellings, representing a fourfold
increase in housing capacity. Of these, 1,938 (64.3%) will be private housing, 847 (28.2%) social
housing, and 227 (7.5%) affordable housing. The high proportion of private housing is intended
to fund the redevelopment without imposing additional costs on the government. However, despite
the scale of the project, the net increase in social housing will only amount to 98 dwellings.
The Waterloo South Estate masterplan was divided into sections, with each group of three participants
in the cohort assigned a section to design and develop.

Shelter & Accomodation for Asylum
Seekers & Refugees
Semester 03 (Group -02) (2023)
Thanks to partner - Sharon Kaul
What does it mean for a built zone to be a social condenser?
A social condenser is more than just a building; it is a communal gathering space that welcomes
everyone, regardless of social class, race, or country of origin. It functions as a hub for dismantling
barriers of social segregation, fostering the creation of a diverse and inclusive community.
The world is witnessing an increasing number of asylum seekers due to war, climate change,
violence, human rights abuses, and other crises. These individuals come from varied backgrounds
and carry with them a unique sense of home, which is often lost when they take refuge in
a different country. How can we make this transition smoother and more comfortable for
them? And, more importantly, how can we support them in finding a path to go back home?
According to the brief, Nineways in Kingsford, NSW, is envisioned as a home for refugees and asylum
seekers. This project builds on interviews and research to understand how refugees and asylum
seekers establish personal connections in a new place, while addressing their mental and physical
health challenges. The aim is to create an ecosystem that resonates with the atmosphere of their
home countries. Through the use of circles, water, land, sky, and courtyards, the design connects
elements of this country with those of their respective homelands, conveying a message of respect and
acknowledgment for nature.

HOTEL
HOUSING
People who stay in hotels complete their
journey when they return home.
However, asylum seekers go on an unplanned
trip that may never end, and they may never
return home.
HOTEL
HOUSING
These two forms of accommodations are diametrically opposed and
separate. What unites them and pulls individuals closer is community,
wellbeing, and health.
HOTEL
WELLNESS
HOUSING
Community brings us together and fosters deep relationships among its
members. Health is the most vital consideration, whether in housing or in
hotels.
Idea Development
A circle or a set of concentric circles usually signify places where people
come together. They can represent a meeting place, fireplace, campsite,
a waterhole or a ceremonial site. Waterholes are critical to survival in the
desert and for that reason they feature frequently in Aboriginal art.
Water acts as a link between the spiritual and physical worlds, and many
water bodies are associated with wahi tapu (sacred sites)’
In many indigenous cultures, water is seen as a living entity with its own
spirit, and it is believed that human have a responsibility to protect and
care for it. For Indigenous peoples, water is not just a commodity, but a
language, a community, and a source of knowledge and law.
Form Development
Laying out Circle
Forming courtyards
Housing
Hotel
The site depicts two circles, one for a hotel and
one for a housing complex. The smaller circle
denotes the hotel, while the broader circle
represents the housing area.
Courtyards are given to each for private outdoor
space. Furthermore, a central wellness centre
is providing a community facility that improves
the entire experience for both hotel visitors and
housing occupants.
Extrusion
Terraces to let sunlight in
The entire building’s form is created using an
extrusion process, which shapes the structure.
Terraces are incorporated into the design to
offer community spaces while maximising solar
exposure from the northern sun.

National Museum of Natural History
Delhi, India
Thesis B.Arch - Individual (2021)
The National Museum of Natural History is located in the heart of central Delhi, amidst the secretariat,
administrative, and government buildings, as well as numerous heritage sites in the surrounding area. This
design provides a modern perspective for the site, which is one of many museums in the vicinity. It aims to
create a natural environment rich in biodiversity, inspired by evolutionary concepts and geometric forms.
The design combines a contemporary approach with a touch of old-school Delhi architecture, featuring
a cubicle footprint with a courtyard. At its center, a Voronoi glass structure encloses a tree garden,
adding a striking focal point. The museum’s design incorporates multiple levels to optimize natural
lighting, ventilation, and scenic views.
The museum houses galleries dedicated to a wide range of species, including entomology and fossil
collections. Additionally, the site features a live diorama gallery encircling the main building. The entire
area is a car-free, fully pedestrianized zone, seamlessly integrating with the topography to provide a
unique and engaging visitor experience.
N
Site Context study
The museum building is located in the most secure and well maintained zones of the capital. Therefore, it asks for
a new age design with the boldness of New India and its principles reflected in it. The design focuses on creating
an impact with a huge linear block cumulating all types of historical exhibits from insects to dinosaurs. With the
recent central vista redevelopments this building creates a new identity and great significance for the young and
old visitors. The natural history museum is a vehicle free site zone and has exhibits in and out of the building. The
motive is to learn through history to create our own someday.

Competetion (Group -02) (2022)
Thanks to partner - Sharon Kaul
This competition called for a design that is rich, meaningful, and luxurious. This proposal focuses on
creating scenic imagery and delivering a high-end living experience in a location like Los Angeles.
The concept emphasizes maintaining a calm environment and crafting a serene space. To achieve
this, features such as courtyards and water pathways are included to enhance the sense of tranquility.
Additionally, most of the villa’s furniture, partitions, wall art, and ceiling lights are designed using
natural brass and teak wood, with macramé details adding to the bohemian aesthetic of the space.
The central tree in the villa courtyard provides shade for the open-air seating area and fosters a
transparent, harmonious atmosphere, surrounded by glass curtain walls.
