THE NAT’S NEWEST EXHIBITION SHINES A LIGHT
ON THE BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA
The Searcher, carried 25 scientists
and volunteers to 15 different
islands in the Gulf of California.
This spring, travelers can get a glimpse into the
beautiful biodiversity of the Baja California Peninsula
- without leaving Balboa Park – when the San
Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) debuts
its newest exhibition. The Nat is one of California’s
oldest and most respected cultural and science
institutions. Founded in 1874 by a small group of
naturalists, the Museum works to preserve and protect this amazing
place we call home. The Museum is located at the East end of El
Prado in Balboa Park, directly in front of the Bea Evenson Fountain.

collaborative research
expedition in Baja California Sur.
Slated to open Friday, May 27, 2022 in time for Memorial Day
weekend, Expedition Baja invites visitors to explore the Baja
California Peninsula and follow researchers on their quest to conserve
its wild beauty. Featuring museum specimens, immersive imagery,
and stories about conservation work happening there, Expedition
Baja brings to life one of the most incredible regions in the world.

The peninsula boasts many rare
plants and animals that exist
nowhere else on Earth. But, like
southern California, it is also a
victim of widespread habitat loss
due to climate change, agriculture,
development and invasive species.
The exhibition will increase
awareness of how diverse the region
is - from snow-capped mountains to
remote desert islands - and the work
being done to preserve it.
The 775-mile-long peninsula is
part of The Nat’s mission area for
biodiversity conservation, which is why they have worked alongside Mexican researchers for more than
100 years to study it. The museum has a long history of scientific expeditions into Mexico and collaboration
with colleagues in the region. “Nature doesn’t stop at the border; in fact, humans are the only species that
recognize political boundaries,” Judy Gradwohl, The Nat’s President and CEO shared with GB Magazine.
“International collaboration is key to the future of this region and the preservation of its remarkable biological
diversity.” This cooperative work has uncovered species new to science, helped with species and habitat
preservation, and played an important role in conservation decisions on both sides of the border.
While many of The Nat’s exhibitions and programs feature museum research and specimens, this is the first
time that scientists themselves will take center stage in an exhibition. From what they pack for expeditions
to stories about plants and animals they are working to conserve, Expedition Baja will bring visitors closer to
the region’s wild places, but also to the researchers and the scientific process itself.
Expedition Baja is located in a brand-new, 2,000-square-foot gallery. It is free for members and included
with paid admission. Guests can pair their visit with films in the Subaru Giant Screen Experience. One of the
films, Ocean Oasis, features Mexico’s Sea of Cortés and the Baja California desert.
Visitors can learn more, purchase tickets, or become a member at sdnat.org.

Kimberly Herrell
FEMALE LEADERSHIP TAKING FLIGHT
BY: NICHOLE NAOUM
Schubach
Aviation
Though aviation
has historically
been a maledominated
industry, women
have played a
fundamental role
in aviation since the earliest days of flight. During World War II,
American women stepped up to fill the gap when the men left
for battle, entering the workforce en masse for the first time to
construct the aircraft that would eventually help win the war.
That is why today, Kimberly Herrell’s ascension to the position
of CEO of Carlsbad-based private jet operator Schubach
Aviation is as impressive as it is symbolic. According to recent
data, women constitute more than half of all commercial
travelers, yet only 3% of commercial aviation CEOs are female.
Kimberley took over the company from the original founder
in January 2020, right before the pandemic caused an
unprecedented commercial catastrophe for the world’s airline
industry. However, she had
worked for Schubach Aviation as
the President for over a decade at
that point.
In her current role, Kimberly
oversees operations, as well as
big picture planning and decision making. “I am continually
shifting between several roles and work closely with aircraft
owners to deliver complete oversight of their assets. I also
work with prospective aircraft owners on financial modeling and
acquisitions,” she shared with GB Magazine.
Lately, the Schubach Aviation team has been flying to a number
of mountain town destinations such as Bozeman, Montana,
Park City, Utah and Aspen, Colorado, as well as Cabo San
Lucas and Puerto Vallarta.
When it came to what initially attracted Kimberly to private
aviation, she shares, “I am very passionate and excited by
both travel and creating thoughtful, unique experiences. To
16 GBSAN.COM | MARCH 2022
me private jets are like a portal to
adventure. They make the world so
much smaller. After 20 years, I still
feel this level of excitement around
private aviation. I think in any career,
staying focused on what lights you
up will naturally magnetize new
opportunities and growth.”
Regarding her leadership style,
Kimberly credits her team as being
her guiding force for inspiration.
She notes, “We are driven by our
company values, a baseline standard
that we hold ourselves to in any
situation. We work with an executive
coach and follow a management style
called EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating
System). It is a system with very clear
roles and accountability and has
been a game-changer for running a
company with clear intention.”
In addition to leading the private
aircraft industry in San Diego,
Schubach Aviation has also been
committed to giving back to their
community for over 30 years.
Kimberly says the desire to become
active in the charity circuit was
instilled in her by the company’s
retired founder Henry Schubach. “I
have been lucky enough to head up
our giving initiatives for the past few
years and it has been very rewarding.
This year, we are excited to launch a
more focused giving initiative called
Schubach Miles that Matter. We will
be announcing more information
around that soon,” she adds.
Kimberly
Herrell
Outside of work, Kimberley loves
traveling, meeting new people, and
trying out as many delicious foods
as possible. “I love to spend time
with friends and family that expand
and uplift me, especially my husband
Ryan and 10-year-old daughter Ella.
We can be traveling the world or
laying low at home; as long we are
together, life is good.”

Apollo 16: Another
Giant Leap for Mankind
IN APRIL 1972, CHARLIE DUKE BECAME THE YOUNGEST MAN – AND
JUST THE TENTH OF TWELVE MEN – TO EVER WALK ON THE MOON.
Charlie Duke, John Young, and Ken Mattingly pose
with a lunar rover at the Kennedy Space Center
Twenty-four Americans journeyed to the
moon in just four years – from 1968 to
1972. Lunar exploration hit new heights
during the last two of those four years,
with extended stays on the moon,
ambitious exploration on the surface and
from orbit, and long journeys in electric
powered rovers.
In April 1972, Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke
became the youngest man, and just the tenth of twelve men,
to ever walk on the Moon. The mission was NASA’s fifth, and
second to last, successful effort to land astronauts on the lunar
surface.
Apollo 16 also was NASA’s second scientific expedition of
the Moon, during which time Duke logged 20.25 hours in
extra-vehicular activities and collected 213 pounds of soil and
geological samples. He took the only videos of the lunar rover
“in action” as it skidded across the surface. Duke is also known
for his crucial role as CAPCOM - Capsule Communicator -
during the hair-raising Moon landing of Apollo 11.

Eugene “Gene” Kranz – a former USAF fighter pilot and
NASA Flight Director for Gemini 4 and Apollo missions
7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 16 and 17 – was in control when three
astronauts perished in a launch pad fire during a procedural
test of Apollo 1 in 1967. That dramatic failure led NASA
to what became known as the Kranz Dictum, “Tough &
Competent,” a dedication to diligence and perfection that
permeates through the agency to this day.
Duke, Griffin and Kranz, along with Dee O’Hara, America’s
original aerospace nurse who tended to all of America’s
astronauts and their families from the Mercury, Gemini and
Apollo missions through to the beginning of the Space
Shuttle era, will share their personal recollections of Apollo
16 at a special celebration at the San Diego Air & Space
Museum on April 23.

By Apollo 16, NASA’s team of support personnel was a
seasoned group of lunar-exploration veterans, led by legendary
Flight Directors Gerry Griffin and Gene Kranz.
Griffin was a Flight Controller, Gemini Systems and Flight

the Lead Flight Director of Apollo 12, 15, and 17. Later, he
“The Apollo program’s Moon landings are some of one of the
most significant achievements in human history,” Jim Kidrick,
President & CEO of the San Diego Air & Space Museum
shared with GB Magazine. “This year is the final year of
the 50th Anniversaries of the Apollo program, offering an
incredible opportunity to see, hear from, and meet personally
the key figures who took part in the most extensive in-person
exploration of the lunar surface, a goal of mankind from
time immemorial. Apollo 16 is a true giant leap in the quest
for knowledge and scientific discovery. The Apollo 16 50th

DETOUR Empowers
HELPING YOUNG WOMEN UNLOCK THEIR LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL
At San Diego Gas & Electric, our employees feel a strong sense of purpose beyond delivering clean, safe
and reliable energy services to our 3.7 million customers. As part of our commitment to the communities
we serve, we support a variety of initiatives through shareholder contributions, employee giving programs,
and volunteerism. Our philanthropic priorities include: climate action, emergency preparedness and safety,
economic prosperity, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Many of our initiatives focus on advancing racial
and gender equity in alignment with our company value to “champion people.” We
understand that in order for our region to thrive and become more sustainable, it’s
important for all of us to do our part to ensure no one is left behind.

DETOUR (Depositing Empowerment Through Outreach & Urban
Redevelopment) is a mentoring organization for girls of color, working at the
intersection of race and gender to advance equity and inclusion in higher
education and priority-sector employment. Their Focused And Naturally
Confident Youth (FANCY) programs cultivate confidence, self-awareness,
leadership, empowering teen girls to succeed in higher education, and
build a strong foundation for long-term economic sustainability.
“DETOUR provides
girls of color with
pivotal experiences
designed to help
them discover their
leadership potential
and find internships
that launch amazing
careers. We put
significant emphasis
on self-love and
self-confidence to
help girls learn to
value themselves
and understand
their worth as
they become
naturally confident
in everything they
do,” shared Tinesia
Conwright, DETOUR
Founder and
Executive Director.
DETOUR has
since forged
pathways for
over 1,000
girls toward
educational
success. In
2016, the
FANCY in
STEAM initiative
launched to
motivate girls
to enter careers
in science,
technology,
engineering, arts, and math. To date, 100% of their high school
graduates have been accepted into four-year universities, with
73% pursuing a degree in a STEAM industry.
Since 2017, the organization’s FANCY Ambassador Paid
Internship Program has placed 44 youth in internships,
allowing them to work with DETOUR and others, including
The Neighborhood House Association, Biocom, and Outdoor
Outreach. DETOUR also recruits local companies and their
employees to speak with teen girls in a series of leadership
workshops. San
Diego Gas & Electric
is among many
local supporters
that encourages
employees to
share their diverse
experiences and
knowledge with local
students.
DETOUR’s target
student population
are girls of color
(age 11-17) who
live, attend school,
and/or play in
Southeastern San
Diego. About 65% of
current participants
are from low-income
households, earning
80% or less of San
Diego’s annual
median income.
“DETOUR
provides
a positive,
welcoming, and
safe space for
teen girls to
discover their
passions in life
while gaining
skills and
experience to
help them land
rewarding future
careers. We
understand the importance of providing positive role models
while making equality and inclusivity a top priority,” added Aisha
Davis, DETOUR Board President.
Named Outstanding Organization for Diversity and Inclusion by
the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 2020, DETOUR
strives to break down stereotypical barriers for teen girls from
underserved communities. With support from local partners
like San Diego Gas & Electric, their goal is to continue to help
change the trajectory of their lives moving forward.

gatherings at restaurants with friends
and colleagues. In came working at
home, video conferencing, and live-streaming music.
In July 2020, Newsweek Magazine proclaimed Mainly Mozart
“The first arts organization in the U.S. to bring live classical
music back to live audiences since quarantine.” First, came
drive-in concerts on a dirt parking lot; then socially distanced
lawn concerts. Artists who had not performed in months
rejoiced in sharing their music once again. San Diego
audiences and musicians throughout the country wanted more.
Mainly Mozart has changed as an organization, challenged
to juggle the changing circumstances of the past two years.

Military
USO San Diego /
Camp Pendleton
From U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton
up north, to the many U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine
Corps and U.S. Coast Guard bases in the south,
the USO reached them all in 2021. With its
USO Centers at Camp Pendleton and Liberty
Station and the USO Neil Ash Airport Center at
the San Diego International Airport, and through
its Field Programs, Transitions and Mobility and Logistics
capabilities, the staff and volunteers made a significant positive
difference last year. The USO’s efforts created opportunities
that supported over 250 thousand instances where it hosted,
engaged or supported our military and their families through
one of its Centers or Programs.
2022 is shaping up to be an even better year for USO San
Diego / Camp Pendleton. All of its Centers are open, and its
Field and Transition programs and its Mobility capabilities are
in full swing, and it expects to reach its pre-COVID support
numbers this year.
Additionally in 2022, the USO has plans to renovate its USO
Neil Ash Airport Center. This Center hosts thousands of service
members each year and has seen a lot of foot traffic. It will
be renovated to present a new look and feel that the service
members and their families will appreciate. In anticipation of
the renovation, USO San Diego Executive Director, retired Navy
Captain William Fenick, his Board Chair Joe Craver, and Board
Member David Barnes met with June Ash, the donor that the
Center is named after. They also celebrated what would have
been Neil Ash’s birthday, enjoying his favorite root beer floats,
now a staple at the airport for the visiting servicemembers and
their families.
USO San Diego / Camp Pendleton is also pleased to announce
its 2022 Advisory Board. These individuals will be essential in
championing and advocating for all the great work the USO
accomplishes in the Greater San Diego area and will work in
support of all the USO does each day for our service members
and their families.

A NIGHT TO DREAM
San Diego Opera Gala 2022
On Saturday, June 4, 2022 join us to celebrate opera, art, friendship, and San Diego Opera’s education programs in the
community during “A Night to Dream,” the Company’s annual gala. Chaired this year by Rebecca and Eugene “Mitch”
Mitchell, this evening will celebrate the leadership and contributions to San Diego Opera and the greater San Diego
community by Kevin and Sherry Ahern. The elegant and festive affair will be inspired by the colors of the new opera by
acclaimed composer Gabriela Lena Frank, El último sueño de Frida y Diego (The Last Dream of Frida and Diego), which
will receive its world premiere at San Diego Opera in October of 2022.
With a lifelong love of poetry, arts and music, Sherry and Kevin Ahern have been
champions of San Diego Opera for over ten years. As dedicated philanthropists and
respected leaders, they have invested their time into giving back to the community
they love. As Chairman and CEO of the company he founded, Ahern Agribusiness,
Inc., Kevin envisioned new possibilities for the cross-border relationship of San Diego
County and Mexico, with special focus on accelerating the growth of agri-business.
While serving on the SDO Board of Directors, Kevin played an important role in
influencing many of the Hispanic initiatives that have created a lasting change in our
community. By forming unique partnerships, Kevin propelled SDO’s commitment to
accessing diverse audiences and providing a lasting cultural service. Kevin also served
on the Metropolitan Advisory Board of the Salvation Army for a number of years. In
addition to her support of SD Opera, Sherry is an advocate for many organizations
in San Diego, graciously giving her time and talents to raise financial support and
awareness. As a trustee on the La Jolla Town Council, Sherry successfully founded
the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival that attracts over 45,000 visitors every fall. In 1998
she established the La Jolla Open Aire Farmers Market which benefits local La Jolla
schools. Sherry is the recipient of service awards
Gala Honorees Kevin and Sherry Ahern
from City of Hope, Salvation Army Women’s
Auxiliary and La Jolla Kiwanis Club and was recently named Diabetes Research
Connection 2021 Volunteer of the Year. Sherry and Kevin have stood by San Diego
Opera every step of the way, especially during the two years when our stages fell
silent. San Diego Opera is grateful to Sherry and Kevin for their unmatched service and
generosity.
The gala is being chaired by Rebecca and Eugene “Mitch” Mitchell. Over the
last decade, Mitch has focused on his greatest passion: leading a collective effort
toward diversity and inclusion. As senior vice president of diversity and community
partnerships for Sempra Energy, Mitch encourages a high-performance culture with
diverse perspectives and inclusive environments. His expertise has been pivotal
while serving on San Diego Opera’s Board of Directors to advance SDO initiatives in
expanding access to diverse audiences and promoting diversity on stage. Rebecca’s
passion for helping local children has provided vulnerable youth with the tools,
resources and support they need to transform their lives. Rebecca currently assists
Youth Assistance Coalition during their daytime education program for homeless youth.
Gala Chairs Eugene “Mitch” and Rebecca Mitchell
“A Night to Dream” begins at 6:00PM at The Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines with a Cocktail Hour and dinner set on t he lovely

Kaleidoscope Award
JUST IN TIME RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FROM THE NONPROFIT INSTITUTE
Don Wells and Diane Cox with
Susanne and Brad Livingston
Just in Time for Foster Youth has been selected as the
2022 winner of the prestigious Kaleidoscope Award
for Good Governance presented by The Nonprofit
Institute at the University of San Diego. JIT won in
the category for mid-size organizations that have an
operating budget between $500,000 and $10 million.
The award was announced at the 18th Annual Nonprofit
Governance Symposium at the University of San Diego on
January 27th.
JIT Board Chair Brad Livingston shared his thoughts about the
key to good governance: “The strong partnership between the
Just in Time board and executive leadership reflects the values
and character of our entire organization. We have “constructive
conflict” that is not about winning the point but rather getting to
the solution that best serves our mission.”
Chief Empowerment Officer Don Wells added, “Fundamentally,
I believe our strength comes from trust, built on consistent
communication, the courage to have difficult and necessary
conversations, and the confidence that each of us comes
together to make our own contribution to our mission and fulfill
our promise to the youth we serve. We are always looking for
new ways to help each other; it as like a good marriage.”
In addition to Don and Brad, current Vice Chair and incoming
Board Chair Ted DeFrank was instrumental during the
application and interview process.
The mission of The Nonprofit Institute at the University of San
Diego’s 2022 Kaleidoscope Award for Good Governance is to
recognize, celebrate, and promote good governance in the San
Diego region’s nonprofit sector. Per the award’s webpage, “Like
a kaleidoscope, the work of nonprofit governance is intricate,
varied and involves viewing the organization through a variety
of lenses. Nonprofit governance works best when viewed
through three lenses: fiduciary, strategic and generative. Good
boards are dedicated volunteers who understand which lens to
apply at any given time, to provide leadership that enhances an
organization’s ability to fulfill its mission.”

Just in Time for Foster Youth fue
elegido el ganador del prestigioso
premio Kaleidoscope Award for Good
Governance, otorgado por The Nonprofit
Institute de la Universidad de San
Diego.
la comisión directiva de Just in Time y su
dirigencia ejecutiva refleja los valores y la
esencia de nuestra organización. Tenemos

Literacy
Read Across America
UNITED WAY OF SAN DIEGO HELPS MIND THE GAP
Kids start out with big dreams for when
they grow up. Reading is crucial for
children to reach their goals of becoming
future astronauts, veterinarians, doctors,
firefighters, video game developers and
pilots. For many kids, those dreams slip
away. Not just because they become
more practical or “grow up”, but because of disparities in
education and lack of family stability that hold them back.
Access to books and not reading at grade level are big
reasons why dreams slip away for children. We know
that kids who are not reading at grade level by the end of
third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high
school. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, 45% of San
Diego County’s third graders were not reading at grade
level - and that was before school closures and virtual
learning exacerbated inequitable access to high-quality
learning opportunities.
42 GBSAN.COM | MARCH 2022
The past two years have
magnified the grave
educational and economic
disparities that exist and
widened the gap for
those experiencing those
disparities. During the
throes of the pandemic,
United Way of San
Diego County (UWSD)
released its strategic
plan, “Mind the Gap:
EDICT 2030”, dedicating
the organization’s work
to closing that gap and
igniting the possibilities for
our region’s future.
UWSD knows that no
one organization
can do this work
alone. United with
community partners
and donors, they
are reimagining
and rebuilding a
community in which
all San Diegans,
especially those
facing the widest
gaps, have the
opportunity to
succeed and thrive.
This spring, UWSD
is launching
two initiatives
for community
members to join in
addressing these
inequities and
finding solutions.
Throughout the month of March, the organization is hosting
a countywide book drive to celebrate Read Across America.
With a goal of donating 1,000 books to local students, UWSD
offers multiple ways to get involved. You can purchase a book
online or in-store with
one of our partners,
Warwick’s in La Jolla and
Libélula in Barrio Logan.
You can also drop off a
new book at UWSD’s
offices in Kearny Mesa.
Finally, you can make a
financial contribution to
support UWSD’s work
in addressing inequities
in our community and
closing the gaps in
education, literacy, and
family stability.
In addition, UWSD, in
partnership with the
Council on Literacy,
is thrilled to
announce the
launch of a brandnew
podcast
called The Gap
Minders! Hosted
by Nancy L.
Sasaki, UWSD
CEO, and Jose
Cruz, Council on
Literacy CEO,
weekly episodes
will feature a
range of notable
and engaging
guests, including
education
experts, political
figures dedicated
to improving
our region,
and influential changemakers passionate about equity for all
children and families. Tune in to The Gap Minders wherever you
listen to podcasts!
United, we can mind the gaps and address inequities so all
children and families in San Diego can make their dreams come
true. To get involved with UWSD, visit www.uwsd.org.

40 Years Of LUV
Announcing Los
Cabos in 2017
Southwest Airlines has long been
part of the San Diego community -
40 years to be exact. We’ve been
serving San Diego International
Airport since 1982 with a mission to
provide San Diego with affordable
and relevant air service. We started
out with six daily departures to
Phoenix and have grown exponentially ever since.
Now, we are California’s largest carrier, have over
500 San Diego-based employees, and operate 114
departures to 30 destinations. Having a mainstay in

has also been a major contributor to our overall growth, which is
why we want to share this exciting achievement with you. Over
the years, we have focused on prioritizing low costs, industryleading
customer service, and partnerships within the community.
Currently, we are working with the Airport Authority and other
airlines that serve SAN to replace the outdated Terminal 1 with a
world-class facility that will turn a new page for the airport. The
goal is to improve travelers’ and airline workers’ experience by
making the airport more accessible.
But at our Heart, we are more than an airline. We’re your neighbor.
We strive to be hands-on with local organizations by devoting
volunteer hours and providing financial and in-kind support to over
25 local non-profits. In 2021 alone, we contributed over $592,000
in community investments, including airline tickets and cash. The
organizations we have partnered with over the years have ranged
from medical service providers and educational programs to those
that serve foster children and other vulnerable communities. We’ve
been involved with non-profits that assist in the transport of service
dogs across the country, providing funding for critical programs,
and helping keep families together through life-threatening illnesses.
For Southwest, it is important to dedicate time and money
to improving life for San Diegans, but we also want to
encourage others to do the same through campaigns and
by leading by example. Giving back and leading with LUV is
something that is ingrained in the very fabric of our culture.
At Southwest Airlines, we believe that the “Warrior Spirit”
and “Servant’s Heart” will allow organizations and individuals
to make a substantial difference in the world we live in. We
believe that consistent commitment to service both in the air
and in the communities we serve helps us cultivate valuable,
lasting relationships with our passengers, employees, and
essential local organizations.

The New Children’s Museum
welcomed Elizabeth Yang-

museum professional,
Yang-Hellewell has long
been inspired by The New
Children’s Museum’s mission
to stimulate imagination,
creativity and critical

contemporary art.
“I have always been taken
with the concept and

She believes The New

“I believe that real, authentic,
actionable change around
diversity, equity, access and
inclusion (DEAI) in museums
begins on the inside of the
organizations. In practice, this
begins with examining who

Hannah’s

February 5, 2022 was
a beautiful morning at
Liberty Station’s NTC
Park for the inaugural
Hannah’s Family Center
Peace In The Family
5K! Runners and
walkers of all ages - from 9 months
to 70 years - joined together to get
moving for this heart-healthy, familyfocused
event for a great cause.
Participants raised over $25,000 for
counseling services for children and
teens experiencing complex family
breakups and have experienced
domestic violence in their homes.
Marilyn Howe, President of HFC’s Board of Directors,
emphasized that “the emotional, cognitive, and physical
health effects for children who witness domestic violence are
devastating.” She continued, “Thanks to the wonderful support
of our sponsors and participants, Hannah’s can now help more
children in our community heal from these family traumas.”
Since February is American
Heart Month, the Center
began their Heart of the Family
Spring Fundraising Campaign
with a focus on physical
health. Event sponsors
included the Southern
California Food Allergy
Institute, f45 Training, Eden IV,
cDAO, Inc., Our Family Wizard,
101 Visitation Solutions, Becks
Entertainment & DJ Services,
Jensen’s Foods, Trader Joe’s,
Dominos and Dunkin’ Donuts.
Heart of the Family for March
brings a focus on emotional
health, and April will target
financial health. With an annual budget goal of $1.2 million
for 2022, the Spring Campaign goal is to raise $50,000 for
comprehensive parent and child services.
“Hannah’s Family Center’s philosophy is based on a holistic
approach to family life that balances all important aspects

challenges
include complex
family breakups;
domestic violence along the continuum of interpersonal power

Hannah’s Family Center’s health and wellness programs are
focused on prevention and early intervention to best reach
families before the vital bonds and connections become so
frayed that the parents may need to separate in order to

have stepped
in to heal the
children, help
the parents
find peaceful
resolutions to their family conflicts, and restore hope for every

ensure that Hannah’s Family Center is here for another three
decades of service.”

CARING FOR OUR SENIORS
IN NORTH COUNTY
A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP AMONGST FOUR
SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS
San Diego PACE
It is no secret that our population is rapidly aging and
that our families are comprised of multiple generations,
sometimes living in one home. By the year 2030, 1 in 4
San Diegans will be age 60 or older and the demand for
comprehensive health services and support will continue
to grow drastically. In an effort to meet the growing
complex healthcare needs of our aging constituents in
North County, a unique partnership has developed between
Vista Community Clinic, TrueCare, Neighborhood Healthcare
and San Ysidro Health. We are excited to introduce the
Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (SD PACE)
as a new resource for our North County seniors and their
caregivers at 1840 West Drive, Vista, California 92083.
San Diego PACE delivers high quality, compassionate care
to adults aged 55 and older. Services are provided and
coordinated by a team of geriatric specialized health care
professionals who are bilingual and highly experienced in
senior care. SD PACE is also a comprehensive health plan
and provides a full range of senior services so our loved ones

therapy, and/or rehabilitative therapy.
We believe all elders deserve access to
the resources they need to thrive. SD
PACE focuses on the physical, mental,
and social health of their patients.
Helping them to age at home with
a higher quality of life, giving much
needed respite to their caregivers and
providing outreach to isolated seniors
who might otherwise have no one to
turn to is their priority.
Vista Pace
can age independently in
the comfort of their homes.
At San Diego PACE, their
mission is to ensure seniors
get the care they need to
lead healthy, happy and
independent lives.
The SD PACE
interdisciplinary team works
together with seniors and
their families to create
a coordinated personal

THE COMMUNITY’S CONNECTIVE TISSUE
Jewish Federation of San Diego County partners with
organizations throughout the local Jewish community
on numerous initiatives and investments designed
to achieve its mission: to broaden and deepen
engagement in Jewish life to strengthen Jewish identity,
foster dynamic connections with Israel, and care for
all Jews in need. Federation’s efforts reflect how it
positively influences people with different needs and in
different stages of life.
“We really see ourselves as the connective tissue among the
community, ensuring that we have vibrant, caring, connected,
and enduring local Jewish life,” Federation President and
CEO Heidi Gantwerk shares with GB Magazine. “Today
our community has numerous pathways for anyone to find
meaningful Jewish expression and participation, wherever they
find themselves on their Jewish journeys.”

has initiated a
working group of
professionals to
address this issue
and implement
new strategies
and programs
to support teens
and their parents,
guardians, and
educators. Currently,
Federation is fielding
two surveys to
develop a baseline
understanding of
teen mental health
and wellbeing in
the community,
one for teens and
another for parents/
educators/adults who work with teens. The surveys are
accessible at jewishinsandiego.org/teens/thrive.
Federation also hired seven local teens to conduct research
and focus groups about the hearts and minds of local Jewish
teens as part of its Peer Leaders Fellowship. These teens will
work to critically examine issues facing their peers, including
antisemitism and mental health. They will also uncover what
Jewish teens want from their Jewish community and what
being Jewish means to them.
Federation also invests significantly in leadership development
to ensure a strong Jewish community in the future.
Participants in the 2nd cohort of the Pauline Foster Women’s
Leadership Institute recently spent an inspiring day at Leichtag
Commons building relationships and hearing from Gantwerk
and community
leaders Charlene

Throughout
the program,
participants

Finally, along
with ADL San

International Holocaust Remembrance Day by releasing
new educational resources, an online video library, and
a Speakers Bureau of Survivors - all available for teachers,
educators, and administrators to incorporate into lessons and
other conversations with young learners throughout the school
year.
Adds Gantwerk, “Given the recent rise in antisemitism
around the country and world, this day took on even greater
importance this year. We will never be silent or scared; we
will fight antisemitism anywhere it manifests. A united Jewish
community is a strong community, and we thank all of our
partners and talented leaders who create such vibrant San
Diego Jewish life.

Marathon
America’s Finest Race
Freedom Dogs
When San Diego native Christy
Carreño started the Beach and Bay
Half Marathon, her dream was to
create the ultimate running event
that she would want to participate
in. The race, which will take place
on April 10 and includes 5k and
10k options, starts at Tecolote Shores Park and winds its way
along many of the iconic beaches and bays of San Diego.
What earned Beach and Bay the runner up position for
Runner’s World magazine’s Best International Running Event
award is the attention to detail. Carreño has been producing
events, including galas, conferences, races, book signings,
and even a food and wine festival, in and around San Diego
for decades. Runners make such an effort to get to the race,
she explains, “They train for months. Many people fly to San
Diego specifically to participate. And then they get up before
dawn to give their all to the race. “I don’t want them to just
get their medal and be on their way. The finish line is just the
beginning.” The finish line festival at Beach and Bay will feature
live music, dozens of vendors, and a beer garden serving
artisan brews. “I try to create an atmosphere that invites our
runners to stay and celebrate their accomplishments.”
A portion of the proceeds from Beach and Bay will go toward
supporting several local charities, including Freedom Dogs, a
nonprofit dedicated to the training of Service Dogs that help
wounded American military heroes transitioning from military
to civilian life, a cause close to Carreño’s heart, since she
raised a service dog. Being part of the service dog community,
Carreño shares, “I’ve seen first-hand how a service dog
can change a person’s life.” Freedom Dogs, along with their
trainers, provide wounded warriors with the physical and
emotional support they need to successfully transition back
into civilian life. “The fact that I can contribute to that transition
in some small way through Beach and Bay makes our work
that much more satisfying.”
70 GBSAN.COM | MARCH 2022

told time and again
that emergency
MediCal does not
cover the expensive
procedure that your
family cannot afford.
Your loved one uses
over-the-counter pain
medication and hot
water bottles, but the
pain, hemorrhaging
and severe blood
loss persists from an
ever-growing cyst.
This is Gloria’s story.
Gloria struggled to
find a stable job, but
most jobs would
hurt her physically.
The pain made her
feel out of control
and depressed. Her
illness affected the
entire family, never
knowing when they
would need to rush
Keerti
Gurushanthaiah
Gloria to the hospital.
“It took a bit away
from each of us. She
is suffering and we
are also suffering,”
said her husband,
Carlos. “I could not
be at the birth of my
two grandchildren,”
recalls Gloria. One
hospital visit for
pneumonia led
Gloria to be referred
to Project Access.
Evelyn Peñaloza, her
Project Access Care
Manager, scheduled
her with Dr. Keerti
Gurushanthaiah,
an OB/GYN at IGO
Medical Group.
Dr. Guru, as her
patients call her,
a newly joined
Board Member
of Champions for
Health says that the
best part of her job
is getting to know
patients during their
course of care,
building relationships
and making someone
feel better. “The best
thing about being an
OB/GYN is making
a difference in
people’s lives.”
78 GBSAN.COM | MARCH 2022
From the first appointment, Gloria knew
that “Dr Guru is very caring,
attentive, and humble - humble
because at that moment, she as
surgeon, was so willing to help
someone like me, who felt like
a nobody.” Before going into
surgery Dr. Guru asked Gloria
if she was ready. “I just started
crying and told her thank you
because you cannot imagine
what this means for me and my
family,” recalls Gloria.
Gloria and Carlos speak about
the difference in her life after
surgery with one word – “freedom.” Dr. Guru shared with GB
Magazine, “Project Access patients are so grateful after the
surgery. They have gone through so much pain, exhaustion
and anemia, that they feel amazing after the surgery and are
beyond thankful after their recovery.” Gloria says, “There is a
huge weight lifted off us, I can stand up, I can do things, I can
play with my grandkids, I have more energy!”

Gloria is thankful for everyone’s help:
from the doctors and staff to
Evelyn’s calls, support and
encouragement. Gloria hopes
“God will continue to bless
Dr. Guru so that she can keep
helping people because she
gave me peace and tranquility.
Now I have better health and
better opportunity.” Since 2008,
Project Access has facilitated
$24 million in care for 6,500+
uninsured patients just like Gloria
by providing free consultations
and surgeries - all thanks to the
dedication, time and talent of our volunteer physicians. For every
$1 spent on program expenses, Champions For Health provides
$10 in donated services - a return on investment of 1000%!

San Diego Latino
Film Festival
RETURNS TO IN-PERSON SCREENINGS IN NEW VENUE
La Caja
It is time once again to shine a spotlight on the
best of the local cinematic arts as the San Diego
Latino Film Festival gears up for its 29th edition.
Even better, this year the 11-day event is returning
to in-person screenings for the first time since the
pandemic forced organizers to move to virtual and
drive-in formats. The San Diego Film Festival has also
found a new home at the AMC Theaters in Mission Valley.
This year’s festival will feature more than 160 Feature and
Short Length films from the US, Mexico, Central America
and South America. While in-person screenings are making
their come-back, some of the films will still be available
virtually. The event will also hold Question and Answer
opportunities with filmmakers and special guests. There will
also be various showcases throughout the festival including
¡SOMOS! Cine LGBTQ+ and ¡Viva Mujeres!
Amid the range of films being featured, there are two highly
anticipated premieres. The first being the Mexican film,
Poderoso Victoria. Directed by Raúl Ramón, the piece
tells the story of a young mechanic who’s facing a tough
decision after his town is cut off from civilization when its
mine and railroad route are shut down.
The second high profile film premiering at the San Diego
Film Festival is La Caja. In Golden Lion Winner Lorenzo
Vigas’ latest, a young teenager travels to Northern Mexico
to collect the remains of his father. However, a chance
encounter with a mysterious stranger leads him down an
unexpected path that tests the limits of loyalty.
The 29th San Diego Latino Film Festival runs from March
10 - 20, kicking off with an opening night press conference
and party, and wrapping up with Sabor Latino: Food, Beer,
and Wine Festival, and an awards announcement.

Poderoso Victoria

ALEXZA PADILLA
BY ANGELICA GAVALDON
Alexza Padilla is from a Tijuana Mexico,
at only 21 years of age she has a
combination of talent, discipline,
drive and a need to impact lives to
be healthier. She is a great example
of how living a healthy life is all about
delicious nourishment and balance.
6 AM Wake up time
Alexza Padilla wakes up to start a new day. For breakfast she
usually has two sunny side up eggs and avocado along with a cold
green pressed juice from The Immune Bar. Lastly accompanied by
coffee with collagen, ashwagandha, reishi, lion’s mane, maca and
cinnamon. Her exercise routine consists of running and hiking.
92 GBSAN.COM | MARCH 2022
7 AM Work
Alexza works at her own
business, The Immune
Bar, a cold pressed
juice store that also
sells healthy snacks.
She shares that all
the cold pressed juice
recipes were made by a
nutritionist and that they
do not add any water,
artificial sweeteners, or
preservatives. Their juices
are raw and cold pressed
and are a delicious and
efficient way of getting
your fruits and vegetables
since all the minerals,
vitamins and enzymes of
the produce are retained
throughout the process.
Padilla shares
with us that the
beginning of the
pandemic brought
change to people’s
conventional
practices which
inspired her to learn
more about the
disease and how
the word, immune,
stood out the most.
This is how Alexza
learned that optimal
nutrition impacts
the immune system
and one way to
strengthen the body
is by eating nutrient
rich foods.
Alexza started learning about cold
pressed juice and its benefits for
boosting the immune system. She
started making many different types
of juice at home and noticed how
she started having more energy,
more mental clarity and her body
was detoxifying. This how she was
inspired to share the importance of
nutrition and benefits by drinking
cold pressed juice. Then her mother
brought to her the idea to start her
own business, The Immune Bar.
1 PM Lunch
For lunch Alexza has macrofriendly
bowls. She shares that
each Sunday she prepares meals
for her week that usually consists
of red quinoa, tri-colored quinoa,
brown rice, cauliflower rice or beans
for base. Then she adds some
greens and roasted vegetables
depending on the season.
Right now, it is cauliflower,
broccoli and beets. Lastly, she
adds some protein whether
roasted tofu, chicken, salmon
or eggs. For healthy fats, some
almonds or avocado.
8 PM Closing time
Around 8 - 9 pm Alexza Padilla
closes her business and goes
home to enjoy some family
time. For her, mental health is
also important and shares how
she journals each day three
things she is thankful for and
what she learned during the
day. Lastly for dinner would
be some protein smoothie or
oatmeal with berries and she
goes to bed around 11 PM.

Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, we are honored
to invite you to attend our tenth annual Chefs, Cork & Craft Gala: Hang Ten!
This year’s gala theme, Hang Ten!, celebrates the tenth anniversary of what has become one of the
Food Bank’s signature events which raises critical funds for the Food Bank’s vital mission in the
community. This year’s gala will take place outside, under the stars, on the grounds of the San Diego
Food Bank’s 90,000-square-foot facility to ensure the safety of our guest attendees.
We enthusiastically embraced the challenge and opportunity to transform the grounds of the San
Diego Food Bank’s working warehouse into a stunning dinner venue for our gala guests. Guests
will enjoy coastal chic décor that pays homage the heritage of our local surfing culture with natural
landscape elements of the coast that will be punctuated with whimsical surfing motifs to create a
sophisticated yet lively ambiance.
Every year, our gala features volunteer chefs from our
local community who volunteer their time and talent
to create an exquisite dinner for our gala guests, and
this year will be no exception as we have some of our
region’s most celebrated chefs supporting this year’s
event. The Food Bank’s gala is an entertaining event for
a very important cause as it honors the Food Bank and
its mission providing food assistance to children, families,
and seniors facing food insecurity in our community.
Funds raised from the gala will support the Food
Bank’s vital hunger-relief programs that continue to
serve record numbers due to the lasting impacts of the
COVID-19 pandemic and inflation at a 40-year high, which
combined makes it more difficult for struggling, lowincome
families to get back on their feet. The evening
will include exciting live musical acts during the cocktail
reception and after the dinner program, amazing silent
and live auction items, and a program highlighting the
mission of the Food Bank in our region.
We hope you will join us for a fabulous night in support
of a very important cause. On behalf of the Food Bank,
thank you for your support, and we hope to see you on
Saturday, April 23.
Sincerely,
Ellen Gruer & Cindy Hickman

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego

the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in

The Food Bank has pivoted to meet the
increased demand for food assistance
by establishing outdoor, drive-thru food
distributions and large-scale, high-volume

throughout the county that are open
