Page Tab A Conversation with

Ollie Benn

about the

giv4 homelessness in san diego initiative

Ollie Benn is the Director of Philanthropy and Social

Impact at the Jewish Community Foundation San Diego

(JCF). In August 2021, JCF launched the giv4 homelessness

in san diego fund, a new way to encourage everyone

in San Diego to participate in the solutions to homelessness.

JCF collaborated with homelessness experts to curate a

fund of 12 local nonprofi ts each having a different impact on

the crisis. The fund has provided over $1.25M in impact in

just nine months.

Q

A

Why do you think the giv4 homelessness fund has

been so successful in such a short period of time?

Homelessness is our region’s biggest crisis, but it’s

so complicated and overwhelming. Many people

want to do something but don’t know where to begin. We

made a curated fund of nonprofi ts as an easy way for

people to give and see their impact every month.

Q

A

Where does the money donated to the giv4

homelessness fund go?

100% of the funds we receive go directly to 12

vetted local nonprofi ts focused on (1) immediate

needs; (2) prevention of homelessness; or, (3) systems

change. Some nonprofi ts focus on particular groups like atrisk

youth or victims of domestic violence, while others have

innovative ways to create affordable housing. In addition to

giving with impact, a major benefi t of giv4 homelessness is

that you get to learn about nonprofi ts and creative solutions

you may never have discovered otherwise.

Q

A

What have you learned while overseeing the

giv4 initiative?

People have so many misconceptions

around homelessness: (1) Most homelessness

in San Diego is caused by economic factors – not mental

health and drugs – and for some groups like seniors it can

be 4 GBSAN.COM prevented | quite APRIL inexpensively. 2022 (2) Some people think

In addition to giving with impact, a major

benefit of giv4 homelessness is that you get to

learn about nonprofits and creative solutions you

may never have discovered otherwise.

housing should be a “reward” for individuals “fi xing” all their

challenges, when the reality is that housing (with supportive

services) provides the stability in their lives to get back on

their feet. (3) Few, if any, people choose to experience

homelessness. We need to treat every individual with

dignity and realize that a job layoff or an accident can

be the difference between paying rent and being evicted.

That compassion and mindset can drive policy change

and help solve this crisis.

Q

A

Is giv4 just an online platform?

If people want to donate, and then receive our

monthly impact videos online, that’s great! But we’ve

also arranged in-person volunteer opportunities, site

visits to see the nonprofi ts, and events like happy hours

at local breweries where speakers have shared their own

experiences of homelessness.

The Jewish Community Foundation San Diego

has facilitated over $1.25 Million from the giv4 initiative

for the following nonprofits.

Doors of Change

Justine was 12 years

old when she fled to

the streets to escape

her mother’s boyfriend,

who was physically

abusing her. When

he started to take off

her clothes, she decided to

chance life on the streets.

When Doors of Change met

her four years later, Justine

had already attempted suicide

twice. She could not envision

a better life for herself, and

she trusted no one. For a

month, she watched warily as

homeless youth like herself

participated in art and music

lessons offered by Doors of

Change. Finally, she asked

to participate in an art class,

and it changed the trajectory

of her life. She began to trust

Doors of Change. She began

selling jewelry to pay for rent

Justine’s College

Graduation

and food. She enrolled in college and earned her bachelor’s

degree; she is now in law school.

Transitional Age Youth (TAY), ages 17-25, are the most

underserved of the homeless community and yet this pivotal

age presents tremendous opportunity to prevent a lifetime of

homelessness. With adult compassion and guidance, these

youth can complete their education, get jobs, get off the streets,

and build a life filled with

hope and opportunity.

Nearly all homeless TAY

are traumatized due to

the abuse, rejection and

victimization they have

endured. As a result, lack of

trust is the greatest barrier

to helping them. The Doors

of Change Taking Music &

Art to the Streets (TMATS)

program is uniquely

successful in building

trust with homeless youth

quickly. Doors of Change

staff and volunteers reach

out to homeless youth,

offering snacks, water and

other necessities. Youth are

invited to attend TMATS,

where they receive a meal

and art or music lessons.

Wraparound services

including clothing, haircuts,

and case management are also available.

Youth are incentivized to return - after attending 6 lessons they

earn art supplies or a musical instrument whether a guitar,

ukulele, keyboard, violin, harmonica whichever they have learned

to play! Through this program, they learn to set and reach a goal.

Many feel a sense of accomplishment for the first time in their

lives. This approach has proven to build trust with homeless

youth months sooner than traditional outreach alone.

14 GBSAN.COM | APRIL 2022

Once trust is built,

homeless youth are

receptive to case

management services

that help them

obtain ID, health care

(including mental

health), job training

and housing. Doors

of Change networks

with a myriad of

local community and

government agencies

to quickly get youth

the help they need

to get off the streets.

“Since its inception in

Taking Music &

Art to the Streets

2001, Doors of Change has helped more than 2,300 homeless

youth get off the streets into safe housing. Music & Art is our

Secret Sauce,” Jeffrey Sitcov, President & Founder shared with

GB Magazine.

Grammy-nominated Three Dog Night will headline a Concert

of Hope to benefit Doors of Change on June 30 at the

Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista. The show promises to be

a rockin’ fun night -- the band’s many Top-40 hits include Eli’s

Coming, Jeremiah was a Bullfrog, and One is the Loneliest

Number – and is a great way to Celebrate the homeless youth

being uplifted and empowered to build a life off the streets.

VEBA Resource Center

NOW OPEN AT A NEW LOCATION!

Executive Director Nancy Maldonado

at the VEBA Resource Center

California Schools VEBA (VEBA) is a non-profit health trust that

provides high quality, affordable and accessible health care for over

150,000 public sector employees across Southern California. VEBA

believes that health is universal and is committed to breaking down

barriers of achieving optimal health, because everyone deserves

access to quality care. VEBA values people and promotes equity;

their members are the purpose behind everything they do. They

believe there is always a better way to deliver health care, and that it

should not be a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Therefore, VEBA works

to build an integrated health care system that delivers on each individual’s personal needs at

an affordable cost. VEBA’s top priority is empowering their members to become advocates

for their own health and well-being, and they do this through the VEBA Resource Center.

Cooking Classes

In 2019, California Schools VEBA

launched the VEBA Resource Center

(VRC), a holistic health center to

help VEBA members overcome

any obstacles they may face. The

VRC has since become a hub for

education employees to feel engaged,

empowered and advocate for their own

health and wellness. The goal of the

VRC is to provide a safe, comfortable

space where VEBA members can

access the care they need, when and

how they need it. It offers a community

that provides a wide range of classes, programs and

services focused on holistic health and all tailored to a

member’s unique situation.

The VEBA Resource Center has recently acquired a new

building that is centrally located at 5520 Ruffin Road,

and they are thrilled to announce it is now open for VEBA

members! Come in to enjoy one of their many in-person

yoga or fitness classes, cooking classes, and more!

Salud

I

hear people say that as we

get older our metabolism

slows down and we start

gaining weight, but I just

don’t buy this belief.

You would always hear

menopause was the end

of a trim waistline, and we might

as well just throw in the towel. I

have always thought there are

other contributing factors to

this belief; we slow down as we

get older, we are not as active

and even though our resting

metabolism doesn’t change

between the ages of 20 to 60,

the way we live does.

We become moms, work an

office job, sit at our desks,

drive around all day - so how

much are we really moving

compared to our younger

years? We need to learn

to take responsibility of our

actions. The good news is that

once you realize this, we can

make positive changes in our

lives that will keep us looking

and feeling younger. Here are my

favorite tips to help you:

METABOLISM

BY ANGELICA GAVALDON

Lift heavy weights, Stretch

and Yoga

Women are scared to lift heavy,

we immediately think bulky

muscles, but the truth is that

we don’t have the testosterone

to produce that type of muscle

mass. Not only will it help

increase muscle mass, keep

our bones healthier and

stronger but it will increase

our metabolism. A trainer

explained it to me this way:

when you run, you stop

burning calories immediately

after the run. When you lift

weights, you will keep burning

calories for 24 hours after your

workout. You increase muscle

mass, and this improves

metabolism.

Trick Your Body

Step out of your routine and

what you are used to doing. If

you walk, then maybe try jogging

if you jog try running and sprints.

Vary your movement every day,

your body gets used to doing the

same thing repeatedly. Surprise it!

Move More and More

Frequently

Walk, run, take the stairs, get up

and do some jumping squats,

walk the dog longer, just do something extra than what you

have been regularly doing. Life has become so perfect for the

lazy, we don’t ever have to leave our house, we can order

in, shop online, have groceries delivered to us, it has made

us much more sedentary. Do a HIT workout which has been

shown to boost metabolism big time, mix it up, add some

sprints to your run or a fast walk to your regular walk.

Sleep, Protein and Drink More

Water

Combining these three not only

will make you feel better, but you

will be healthier and burn calories throughout the day. Good

quality sleep increases metabolism, you feel more energetic,

and you make healthier food choices. Protein takes longer

to digest so it keeps you feeling fuller longer. Choose healthy

proteins and drink more water! It has been shown to increase

metabolism and keep you hydrated throughout the day.

Blood

Bank

PROUDLY SERVING MORE

THAN 30 SOUTHERN

CALIFORNIA HOSPITALS

TO SAVE LIVES AND

ADVANCE HEALTH

Since 1950, over 3 million lives have been

saved! The community’s partnership

and philanthropy are at the heart of San

Diego Blood Bank’s mission – Saving

Lives Today, Improving Life Tomorrow.

San Diego Blood Bank’s ability to adapt

during the pandemic, prioritize community

needs, meet the blood demand supply

for their hospital partners and respond

quickly in emergencies means their

mission continues. Collaboration with their hospital partners is

also at the heart of their mission.

There is no way to predict when an accident will happen, and

major traumas can quickly deplete a hospital’s blood supply.

Regular blood donations are necessary to ensure trauma

centers are prepared and have enough blood on the shelves

for patients who need blood to survive the second an injured

patient arrives.

San Diego Blood Bank is there for local patients, responding to

hospital requests through STAT orders. Last year, 6,389 STAT

deliveries were delivered to critically ill patients at operating

rooms and trauma bays to transfuse immediately and save

patient’s’ lives. Susan Stone, Chief Executive Officer of Sharp

Financial gifts support

blood collection efforts

Coronado Hospital shared the importance of the Blood Bank

“Our Patient Blood Management Team has been working

steadily to conserve this precious resource and we are thankful

to have such an incredible partner who continues to outperform

the rest of the country and helps our hospitals save the lives of

our patients each day.”

Blood products are also used to maintain Massive Transfusion

Protocol (MTP) kits for use in emergency rooms in Level 1 and

2 trauma hospitals. MTP kits ensure hospitals have on-site,

ready-to-transfuse platelets, plasma, and red blood cell units

in cases of severe blood loss. Robert Simpson, Director of

Hospital Services at the San Diego Blood Bank shared with

GB Magazine, “Our community might be unaware of all the

moving parts it takes for blood to get to the hospitals. We like

it that way here at San Diego Blood Bank. We handle those

pressures and make sure everything is smooth, so nobody in

the community must worry.”

Through philanthropy, thousands of lives are saved every year.

San Diego Blood Bank financial donors play an integral role in

ensuring critical resources are available to collect, process, and

distribute lifesaving blood to hospitals and their patients. Last

year, 562 financial donors funded state-of-the-art resources

including two bloodmobiles and critical blood collection

A Brighter Future for Children

Father Joe’s Villages Children’s Charity Gala

benefits programs that serve children and

families experiencing homelessness.

Every child deserves a happy and healthy life.

That’s why Father Joe’s Villages’ Therapeutic

Childcare Center is dedicated to preparing

children experiencing homelessness and

poverty for success.

The program integrates services that address

behavioral, developmental, medical and dental

needs—all in one location. The Therapeutic

Childcare Center offers families experiencing

homelessness quality, affordable licensed

childcare. With the assurance that their children

are in good hands, parents are free to look

for employment and permanent housing.

Additionally, their children have access to a

safe and supportive environment to learn

and play–essential activities for the healthy

development of a child.

Coupled with Father Joe’s Villages’ housing and

services for families, our Therapeutic Childcare

Center’s comprehensive services help build

strong families, healthy, confident children

and a brighter future.

Cristiano and Adriana were moved to create

a program serving young mothers without

family support. The Saint Margaret of Cortona

between the ages of 18 to 24.

“Assisting mothers and their children into a

safer, richer life is what inspires us to work with

Father Joe’s Villages. Through the Therapeutic

Childcare Center and Saint Margaret of Cortona

Harbor programs, we are hopeful that many

more families will be positively impacted. We are

Education

Junior

Achievement

Students competing in the

Stock Market Challenge

In today’s world, there is a significant

racial disparity when it comes to

investing for the future. Some of

this has to do with trust and fear

but also a lack of financial literacy

being taught at home or in school.

According to CNBC, only about half

of Hispanic and Black Americans own

some form of investment compared

to 78% of white Americans. Less

than a third of Black Americans have a

retirement account, whereas 63% of white

males have invested in their retirement.

Winners from the Stock

Market Challenge

56 GBSAN.COM | APRIL 2022

Knowing how to invest strategically is a main aspect of

financial literacy education and a critical component of building

generational wealth. With the rise of technology, investing has

never been easier or more accessible. Over the last year, there

has been a huge increase in the number of people starting to

invest in the stock market.

The fear of taking on risk and lack of diversity among financial

experts are major contributing factors that many Black

Americans cite for not making investments. Another reason is

the misconception that there is a minimum amount of capital

required to begin investing.

We need to

be teaching

young

people about

different

investments,

the levels

of risk each

investment

carries,

and how to

make smart

assessments

on how

much risk to

take on at a

given time.

Investing

should not

be viewed as

something

to be fearful

of, but rather

Students in action

a vehicle

for growing

wealth

and providing financial stability. Investing is critical to beating

inflation and generating a passive source of income.

Young people should be aware that they can start investing

regardless of how much money they are starting with. Fractionalshares

and zero fee brokerages enable anyone to put their

money into the stock market just by opening an account.

Educating young people early on about investing smartly is

essential in the efforts to reducing racial economic inequalities.

Every year Junior Achievement of San Diego County (JA) hosts

their Stock Market Challenge to introduce high school students

to the fundamentals of stock market investments by volunteers

from their own communities. Students can practice making

long-term investments and developing investment strategies

based on real-world events in a risk-free environment. It is a

fun, engaging way to get young people to think about their

futures and how they are going to manage their personal

finances. A total of 513 students received the curriculum while

more than 250 students participated at this year’s event in

March. Teams hailed from all over the county including Hoover

High, Lincoln High, Mt. Miguel, El Camino High, El Capitan

High,

and even

schools

from

Tijuana,

Mexico.

To prepare

for the

event,

students

spent a

period of

five weeks

learning

about

investing

and how

the stock

market

operates

through

JA Take

Stock in

Your Future

curriculum

taught by volunteers in their classroom. Students learned about

the types of investments, the importance of diversification, and

the power of compound interest.

Providing financial literacy education that encompasses how to

invest is necessary in preparing young people for a successful

future and narrowing the racial investing gap. Through

collaborative efforts among schools, teachers, and community

organizations, we can help young people find their path

towards financial freedom.

Visionaries

Irwin and Joan Jacobs

Further Jonas Salk’s Vision

Joan and Irwin Jacobs Science and

Technology Center at the Salk Institute

Irwin and Joan Jacobs need no introduction when it

comes to giving back, as their generous philanthropy

has touched dozens of organizations in San Diego, and

beyond, the Salk Institute included.

The Jacobs’ contributions have impacted every part

of the Institute. The funding they have provided has

strengthened the Institute’s ability to attract and retain

top scientists in their fields, and pursue research at

the forefront of scientific discovery. At the same time,

the Jacobs contributed countless hours to offer strategic

advice and counsel to the Institute’s governing body and

administrative leadership over the last two decades.

Now, in November, the Jacobs further cemented their legacy

with Salk by announcing a donation of $100 million to Salk’s

Campaign for the Future: Building a More Resilient World. The

transformative gift, match challenge that will help Salk raise

a total of $300 million, will enable construction of the Joan

and Irwin Jacobs Science and Technology Center at the Salk

Institute. The new building will be home to four Centers of

Excellence and will provide critical research and administrative

space that will advance and expand Salk’s scientific efforts for

generations to come.

The Jacobs have long been enthusiastic supporters of Salk

science, inspiring others to join them in advancing the mission

58 GBSAN.COM | APRIL 2022

of changing lives

through highrisk,

high-reward

science and

strengthening Salk

overall.

In 2004, they

helped establish

the Crick-Jacobs

Center for

Computational and

Theoretical Biology,

where scientists

use computer

modeling to

study how the

brain processes

information.

Two years later,

Irwin Jacobs, a

co-founder of

Qualcomm, was

selected chair of

Salk’s Board, a

position he held

until 2016.

In his role as chair,

Irwin Jacobs

spearheaded

Salk’s first capital

campaign, The

Campaign for

Salk, which raised

$360 million for

the Institute. In

2008, as part of

Irwin and

Joan Jacobs

that effort, he and Joan established the Joan Klein and Irwin

Mark Jacobs Senior Scientist Endowed Challenge, encouraging

donors to endow 20 chairs for senior Salk scientists. For every

$2 million that a donor contributed toward an endowed chair

at the Institute, the Jacobs added $1 million to achieve the $3

million required to fully endow a chair for a Salk senior faculty

member. This level of support ensured that Salk scientists

could continue to pursue the bold, life-changing science the

Institute is renowned for. All 20 chairs were endowed.

After the Chair Challenge, the Jacobs launched Salk’s

Innovation Grants Program, a donor-funded way to support

out-of-thebox,

potentially

trailblazing

research ideas

that would

otherwise not

attract traditional

funding.

It seems fitting

that the Jacobs,

with Irwin Jacobs’

background

in engineering

and computer

science and the

couple’s longtime

support of Salk’s

computational

biology, should

be providing a

key gift to Salk’s

Campaign for the

Future, helping to

recruit computer

scientists,

bioengineers and

mathematicians

and expanding

the Institute’s

computational

biology

infrastructure.

Through their

generosity, the

Jacobs’ gift will

advance scientific

research at Salk for generations to come. Jonas Salk once said

that the most important question we could ask ourselves is

“how to be good ancestors.” In a partnership that has spanned

decades, Joan and Irwin Jacobs have shown us all how to

answer that question.

“Joan and Irwin’s support of Salk is unwavering,” Rebecca

Newman, vice president for External Relations shared

with GB Magazine. “They have consistently supported

the Institute’s highest priorities and now have provided

an extraordinary opportunity for us to succeed with the

Campaign for the Future.”

Arts Programming

New Children’s Museum

Summer Camps

The New Children’s Museum is known for

its immersive, full-scale art installations as

well as hands-on art-making experiences

for children. During the pandemic closure,

many of the Museum’s art programs were

placed on hold or reimagined as virtual

content. Since reopening last summer, the

Museum has gradually reintroduced its art

programs for visitors to enjoy in person again.

“During the closure, we focused on virtual learning, providing

online art-making resources and kits for students and families,”

The New Children’s Museum’s Executive Director and CEO,

Elizabeth Yang-Hellewell shared with GB Magazine. “As children

have returned to school and outside activities, we are pleased

to be supplementing their learning with creative and interactive

experiences through our arts-based educational programming.”

Shortly after reopening, the Museum brought back Toddler Time,

its popular weekly program focused on toddler development

through storytelling, music-making, movement and sensory art

exploration. Toddler Time was the first program to go virtual,

with weekly videos posted on the Museum’s website and social

media channels for at-home participation. Classes are currently

held every Friday, free with admission.

In January, the Museum relaunched

its school visit program supported by

the Institute of Museum and Library

Services, which had also gone virtual

during the pandemic with kits containing

an instructional video tour, lesson plans

and art supplies for schools to pick up.

The Museum is currently welcoming

multiple school groups each week

at their downtown location, while still

making virtual kits available as an

alternative.

Unity Luncheon

Chicano Federation

The Chicano Federation of San Diego will be

hosting the Annual Unity Luncheon on May

6, 2022. For decades, the Unity Luncheon

has been a staple event in San Diego and

the Federation’s largest fundraiser of the

year. The event brings together hundreds

of community and business leaders to

raise funds to support the Federation’s numerous community

programs and services. In 2022, after two years of restrictions

due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will also be bringing

attendees back together for a 100% in-person event.

Chicano Federation of San Diego County is a leading nonprofit

in the San Diego region and has worked towards the benefit

of all San Diegans since 1969. The Federation’s programs and

services address San Diego’s most critical needs by offering

subsidized care for infants and toddlers, early childhood

education at a preschool in Barrio Logan, healthy meals

for over 7,500 children each month, 300 units of affordable

housing at nine apartment buildings in Barrio Logan, City

Heights, and South Park neighborhoods of San Diego, and a

workforce development program that has helped thousands of

women start family child care homes across San Diego County.

70 GBSAN.COM | APRIL 2022

At the 2022 Annual Unity Luncheon, Chicano

Federation will share its 2021 accomplishments

that addressed the most pressing needs in the

community by providing services and resources,

especially to those most impacted by the

pandemic. However, there are still many needs

in our communities. All the funds raised at the

Unity Luncheon will help assist San Diego County

individuals and families who still need support

towards an equitable recovery.

“Chicano Federation has been making strides

in providing San Diego’s most underserved

communities many resources and services

to support the recovery from the COVID-19

devastating effects. Our job is not done. We are

committed to continuing our tireless efforts to

ensure that everyone in San Diego County has

access to services and resources.” Chicano

Federation’s CEO, Liz Ramirez, shared with GB

Magazine. “We are very proud to have many

partners and supporters who believe in our

mission and continue to work with us to assist our

community. The Unity Luncheon is a clear example

of us working together, in unity, to support the

individuals and families who need it the most.”

As part of the event’s program, the Chicano Federation

will present its Annual Awards. The Community Partner

of the Year Award and the Corporate Partner of the Year

Award are introduced to an individual and an organization

who, through their work, volunteerism and support of

the Federation, help advance its mission and goals. In

addition, Chicano Federation, in partnership with the

Jacobi Family, will present the Julie Perez Scholarship.

The Jacobi family’s mission is to find talented, driven,

and deserving young Latina women pursuing a college

degree. They believe that young women can change

their lives and the lives of many others to create a more

WILDCOAST

BLUE CARBON AND A GREEN FUTURE IN A BAJA WHALE LAGOON

BY SERGE DEDINA, PHD

Laguna San Ignacio in

Baja California Sur

The southern reaches of Laguna San Ignacio

in Baja California Sur, Mexico, may be one

of the easiest places on the peninsula to get

lost or hopelessly stuck. Located west of

the jutting escarpments, layered peaks and

hidden canyons of the Sierra de Guadalupe

are treacherous sand dunes, salt flats and

mud of a no-man’s land. Surfers have been passing over

these dusty tracks southward to San Juanico or Scorpion Bay

for decades.

“Take the wrong turn and you end up on a salt flat filled with

mud so thick that even walking is difficult,” I wrote in my book

Saving the Gray Whale back in 2000. In the early 1990s, my

wife Emily and I spent a few months living there while carrying

out research on gray whale conservation. We got stuck in the

Lagoon’s southern salt flats plenty of times!

Today, the gray whale lagoon is part of the 6.2 million-acre

federally protected El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, which is

also a UNESCO World Heritage site. This isolated and wild

region is ground zero for an ambitious and innovative effort to

72 GBSAN.COM | APRIL 2022

help sequester, or remove

from the atmosphere,

carbon via mangroves,

the aquatic plants that

line the wetlands and

embayments of the

central and southern Baja

California peninsula.

Mangroves are a

type of blue carbon

ecosystem that sequester

atmospheric carbon at a

rate five times faster than

terrestrial forests, while

also storing up to 50

times more carbon. They

are of special interest

today as we work to

reverse the impacts of

the past 100 years of

releasing excess carbon

into the atmosphere.

Our coastal ecosystems

are incredibly efficient

at removing harmful

amounts of carbon from

the atmosphere and can

store it for thousands

of years, making these

areas key in the fight

against climate change.

“It is imperative that we

not only reduce emissions

globally, we also must

conserve and restore the

natural ecosystems that

help us sequester carbon.

In the case of mangroves,

these ecosystems

protect shorelines against

rising seas levels and

dangerous chubasco

storm surges as well as sequester carbon,” shares Tannia

Frausto a conservationist with WILDCOAST. WILDCOAST

is an international team that conserves coastal and marine

ecosystems and addresses climate change with natural

solutions of which I am the Executive Director.

Mujeres de El Datil planting

mangrove seedlings

With the support of SeaTrees,

WILDCOAST is working

with women in Laguna San

Ignacio to plant 40,000

mangroves over 25 acres

of tidal zones, creating a

habitat suitable for fish,

shellfish, wildlife, and

adapting to and mitigating

climate change. “Mujeres

de El Dátil” are trained in

mangrove environmental

services, seedlings collection

and planting techniques,

as well as monitoring

and maintenance

of restored sites.

Once this restoration

phase is completed,

WILDCOAST will

expand its efforts

by planting 40,000

additional seedlings and

conducting monitoring

of restored sites in

2022 and 2023 with

the generous support

of Sempra Energy and

other partners.

“Our collective efforts

in the Lagoon provide a

clear model for how we

can work at the local and

global level to address

climate change through

natural solutions,” shared

Frausto.

Through legal protection

and management,

WILDCOAST has helped

to conserve 38,336 acres

of mangrove forests that

store 3.5 million tons of carbon, equivalent to the emissions of

2.8 million cars driven in one year. As Frausto points out, it is

a natural solution to tackling climate change - a piece of the

puzzle we can all put together now before it is too late.

GIVING THE GIFT OF LEADERSHIP AND MUSIC

BY: NICHOLE NAOUM

For most of us, music plays a small part of

everyday life. It is playing in the background

during a car ride, lifting our spirits when we

are feeling down, and reminding us of past

experiences with loved ones. For Nancy Laturno,

CEO of Mainly Mozart, music plays an integral role

in both her personal and professional life.

Tell us about your role at Mainly Mozart:

I co-founded Mainly Mozart in 1988. Originally, it was a twoweek

festival featuring an all-star orchestra consisting of North

America’s top orchestral musicians. Since then, I have been

responsible for the organization’s strategic and artistic direction

as CEO, with the support of incredibly talented and innovative

staff and a strong and committed Board.

How would you characterize your leadership style?

My style has changed greatly over the years. Experience and

age have loosened my involvement in details, though it is

probably more thanks to an extremely strong staff with skills

and talents different than mine, but whose values and vision

align. I strive for everything we do to be worthy of what we

put on stage and of the patrons who believe in us. At the end

of the day, I want the Mainly Mozart team to feel that we are

making a difference, often doing the impossible, and doing it

with integrity.

What inspires your love for music?

I love a wide range of genres - classical, R&B, jazz, country,

opera, rock - and I believe absolutely in the healing power of

music. I am not a musician, which separates me from most

of my colleagues, but I have spent most of my career in

classical music, beginning as Marketing Director at the San

Diego Symphony, followed by 34 years running Mainly Mozart.

Exposure to glorious music played at an exceptional level

opened my ear and inspired my passion for classical music.

Just as important have been the incredible people who create

the music and have nurtured my appreciation.

74 GBSAN.COM | APRIL 2022

How do you spend your time outside of work?

Above all, I cherish my time with family and friends. I

practice yoga daily and scuba dive whenever I am near

warm water (my favorite spot is Mahahual). I stopped

kick-boxing during quarantine and am eager to get back,

though I dread starting over! I love travel, but home-time

is very important to me. I serve on the Art of Autism

Board, and if life ever slows down, I would love to devote

more time to this incredible organization.

What can we expect from the Mainly Mozart All-

Star Orchestra this summer?

Magic. What happens on the Mainly Mozart stage

when our All-Star Orchestra is assembled can only be

understood by being there. Serious classical musicians

will hear the difference and newer listeners will feel it.

Music Director Michael Francis’s narration during each

performance will deepen the listeners’ experience

enormously. We will have incredible soloists, including

violinist Augustin Hadelich and cellist Maximilian

Hornung, glorious music, and an orchestra like no other.

Families

Home Start Celebrates

50 Year Milestone

Home Start Thrift

Boutique Ribbon Cutting

It was September 1977 – a huge crossroads for a

caring team of social workers dedicated to serving

San Diego children and families in need. As the

home-based component of the Head Start program,

Home Start had already been delivering services to

families for five years. Federal funding had ended for

the pilot program, so Project Home Start had to either

close its doors forever or secure new revenue.

Shutting down was simply not an option. The results were

in – this innovative home-based program was meeting

a tremendous need. Parents were getting the resources

to ensure their children could thrive. Fortunately, under

the direction of Home Start Founder and CEO Dr. Allana

Cummings Elovson, a committed group of staff and parents

rolled up their sleeves. They formed a Board of Directors,

filed as non-profit agency, and Home Start, Inc. was born.

78 GBSAN.COM | APRIL 2022

As time passed, tragedies such as domestic violence,

homelessness, hunger and abuse became more common.

Home Start adapted services to expand and address these

crises. In 1986, Home Start successfully implemented

San Diego’s first family

preservation project,

providing intensive services

to prevent the unnecessary

removal of children from

their homes.

Another milestone occurred

12 years ago under the

direction of current CEO

Laura Tancredi-Baese.

That is when Home Start

opened the region’s first

Maternity Housing Program

to specifically address the

unique needs of pregnant/

parenting young women

and their children facing

homelessness. Mothers are

paired with a Case Manager

and receive evidence-based

parenting education, assistance

securing child-care, therapy

and employment-readiness.

An onsite Child Development

Specialist works with each

mother/child to ensure critical

developmental milestones are

reached.

Laura next responded to the

crucial need for job-training for

these young women. In 2015,

she established Home Start’s

Thrift Boutique thanks to a

generous estate gift from Meg

Jacobs. Participants receive

training and coaching that builds

work-readiness skills. Bright

Future Candles was the second

social enterprise opened by

Home Start in 2019. Today,

the agency serves more than

Home Start

Jasmine and

her son

17,000 individuals in the community through seven core service

programs with success stories like Jasmine.

“A car is not a home for me and my son,” Jasmine lay awake

thinking, alone and scared.

After a referral, Home Start

welcomed her and son

Jeremy into their own home.

This young mother no

longer had to lay awake and

anxious. Staff have provided

Jasmine and her son with

housing, case management,

food, furniture, household

items, and parenting

education. Jasmine created

an Individualized Transitional

Living Plan with her Case

Manager. They are working

on securing childcare, so

she can use her restaurant

management experience to

return to work.

Be a part of helping more

families like this by attending

Home Start’s 50th

Anniversary Celebration

on Saturday May 14th at

The US Grant. Join local

leaders and caring San

Diegans to recognize the

tens of thousands of children

and families served by Home

Start, as well as raise funds

needed to continue expanding

services. The evening will

feature a three-course dinner,

auction excitement, live

entertainment and dancing.

children to live in safe, stable,

Nutrition

Feeding People,

Not Landfills

FEEDING SAN DIEGO IS COMMITTED TO PROTECTING PEOPLE AND

THE PLANET BY TURNING FOOD DONATIONS INTO FOOD ASSISTANCE

Ending hunger is not a sourcing problem,

it is a distribution problem. It is also an

environmental problem. Curbing food waste,

both on a residential and business level, is a

sustainability issue that, if solved correctly, can

positively impact hunger-relief organizations

and the work they do. Feeding San Diego,

the county’s leading hunger-relief and food

rescue organization, has a unique sourcing and distribution

model that allows it to do more than just provide healthy food

to San Diegans facing hunger. The organization rescues highquality

excess food before it ends up in the landfill by partnering

with local organizations like grocery stores, farms, and hotels,

protecting people and the planet.

86 GBSAN.COM | APRIL 2022

During its nearly 15 years in operation, Feeding San Diego has

already been working with local and national food donors to

rescue surplus food and get it to people in need. In fact, just

last year alone, the organization rescued more than 27 million

pounds of food and redirected it to San Diegans who need food

assistance.

This work is now in the spotlight as the State of California

implements Senate Bill 1383, a law passed in 2016 that went

into effect this past January. The law aims to cut down on

short-lived climate pollutants by keeping organic waste out

of landfills. Organic waste in landfills creates methane gas,

a leading contributor to climate change. With the new law

in the backdrop, the non-profit will continue its life changing

work of rescuing food from food donors including Sprouts,

Albertsons, Food 4 Less, Ralphs, Costco,

Trader Joe’s and many more. The law also

includes restaurants and event venues,

works with – including the San Diego Zoo

and Petco Park – to save food from going

to waste.

Hunger can be

hard to recognize,

but it is all around

us. Hundreds of

thousands of people

in San Diego County face food insecurity. Essentially, someone who

is food insecure does not consistently have enough food to lead a

healthy life. The effects of food insecurity ripple throughout people’s

lives, causing high levels of stress and chronic health issues.

It is up to our community to continue innovating and working

together to ensure that no one worries where their next meal is

coming from. By rescuing food, Feeding San Diego is solving

two problems: hunger and climate change San Diegans can

get involved by making a donation, volunteering with the

organization, or helping to spread the word.

OPTIONS FOR ALL ADVOCATED FOR NEW FAIR-WAGE LAW

BY TANYA CASTANEDA

Ready for the closeup

Ludivico Estrada sets up a tripod and aims his

camera with precision. Checking the focus and

lighting, he captures footage, uploads it to an

editing program, and slices and dices it into a

video that tells a story. It feels good to master

the technology of multimedia, said Estrada, who

is known as “Ludi” to his colleagues at Options

For All (OFA), where he works as a production assistant. “I’m

trying to sharpen my skills at graphic design and video

editing,” Estrada, 33 shared with GB Magazine. “You can gain

more experience… in order to earn more pay.”

Seeing Estrada’s work ethic, it is hard to believe that he

struggled to get hired only a few years ago. He has Asperger’s

syndrome, now called autism spectrum disorder, which added

barriers to finding a job. OFA, a San Diego nonprofit, serves over

1,500 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities

(I/DD). “We believe that everyone has the potential to live a

meaningful life – and for many, working is part of that,” said OFA

Chief Executive Officer Ken Barnes. “OFA helps people succeed

and develop their strengths so they can thrive.” OFA, which

received the 2020 Adam Heavner Memorial Award for Business

of the Year from the Autism Society of America, is celebrating

Autism Awareness Month throughout April.

2020 Adam Heavner Memorial

Award for Business of the Year

Ludivico Estrada

Preparing Individuals For Careers in Film

Estrada earned a bachelor’s degree in

multimedia in 2016 but was still unemployed

six months after graduating. “I just felt out

of luck at that time.” Then he learned about

Options For All’s Film and Media Studio

in San Diego. Participants produce short

films, documentaries, podcasts, and even

animation. Estrada completed the program

in 2018. Noticing his creativity, OFA offered

him a job, which he immediately accepted. “It

is a lot of good experience that you learn

from… set design, on set camera, movie

turns, TV turns,” he said.

Fair Wages for People with Disabilities

Across the U.S., many I/DD community members work for lower than

minimum wage. This is known as sub-minimum pay and averages just

$3.34 per hour. Currently, 40 states allow sub-minimum wages. Last year,

OFA advocated for a change in the law in California. Barnes, who serves

on a statewide task force for developmental disabilities, worked with State

Senator Maria Elena Durazo. She sponsored Senate Bill 639, phasing

out sub-minimum pay. It was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in

2021. “California has taken a leadership role in normalizing fair wages for

the I/DD community, and we are proud to be part of that,” said Barnes.

For more information, visit www.optionsforall.org.

Supporting Success for People with

Barriers

People with I/DD can face barriers to

employment. While every individual

is different, challenges may include

limitations in learning, social skills, and

attention span. Of individuals with I/DD 16

and over, fewer than 1 in 10 are employed,

according to the U.S. Department of

Labor. OFA provides job coaches that help

the employee adjust to employer feedback

and changes in assignments. Estrada said

that he benefited from help in learning

industry terms: For example, a “brick”

means the battery for the camera, he

explained.

Vroom! on October 8, 2022, as the finish line.

This season, SDAM has set its sights on

creating a positive impact in the community,

beginning with the Vocational Education

Academy (VocEd) for at-risk youth living at or

below the poverty line in San Diego County

by providing automotive career development,

money education, and enhanced selfconfidence.

VocEd’s first class of students

will begin in January 2023. To prepare, the

Museum is inviting a group of local students to

serve on a student advisory committee tasked

with creating VocEd to be “by the

student, for the student.” These

high school participants will provide

feedback and ideas on the curriculum, courses, and speakers

to better develop the academy. SDAM will use their advice to

produce a more robust and adaptable automotive program.

The San Diego Automotive Museum is also focusing on

building a world-class automotive experience to be the center

of car culture in the community. When friends think of a meetup

place for the weekend, they will look at the Museum’s event

calendar. When a birthday party or wedding needs an intimate

venue, the Museum will be their first thought. And businesses

will first think of the Museum when planning holiday parties,

retreats or meetings.

Being the destination in Balboa Park begins from the inside

out. New exhibitions such as Alternate Fuels will open by the

year’s end. Plus, a recently added vignette honors San Diego

Ferrari owner and car enthusiast Skeets Dunn. In the coming

weeks, the Berg Family Library will be completely overhauled

to reintroduce SDAM’s collection of automotive periodicals –

the most extensive collection on the West Coast. The grand

reopening is scheduled for July 2022. SDAM will renew a

small corner on the exhibit floor for an interactive Children’s

Corner. Open year-round, activities will rotate offering a new

experience for young visitors.

The Museum’s vision includes bringing the building’s 1935

façade back to its original glory. Thanks to the Committee of

100 (C100), who generously works to restore and preserve

Balboa Park’s historical architecture, two life-size grizzly bear

sculptures are returning to the Museum. The grizzly bear

replicas will match the ones from the 1935 California Pacific

International Exposition, bronze-casted and placed upon the

corners of the Museum’s roof to overlook Pan American Plaza

once again. They will be complemented by two flag poles

rising 18 feet above the entrance, one to fly the American

flag and the other flying the California State flag. C100’s

commitment to SDAM’s historical architecture supported the

return of the tile murals in 2021, which originally hung over the

building’s entrance for the 1935 Exposition. Dedication of the

grizzly bears and flag poles is scheduled for mid-2022.
