Beauty

Kiersten L. Riedler, M.D.

AN EYE FOR BEAUTY AND A HEART FOR MUSIC

La Jolla Cosmetic

welcomes Kiersten

L. Riedler, M.D.

Combining her

background in science

and the arts, she

brings a passion for

aesthetic surgery to

her specialty area,

plastic surgery of the

face and nose. Dr.

Riedler, known for her

natural looking results

and ability to connect

with her patients,

shares, “As an aging

female myself, I

also experience the

changes my patients

are reporting and

understand their

concerns.”

A native San Diegan,

Dr. Riedler was born

into a medical and

musical family. Her

father, Scott Riedler,

MD, practiced

neurology at Sharp

Rees-Steely and

her mother taught

music. She was born

at Scripps La Jolla

and graduated from

La Jolla Country Day

School before heading

to Harvard University.

Wanting to be a

doctor from childhood,

she has a collection

of photos sharing her

first birthday present,

a Fisher-Price doctor

bag. Another photo

features her, as a

toddler, using a toy

Lego to “examine”

her father’s ear. For a

sixth-grade science

project, her father

volunteered as a study

patient to test the

effect of temperature

on nerve conduction.

Kiersten L. Riedler

10 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2022

In high school she was active in

academic and musical groups,

winning awards in math, science

and Spanish. She participated in

the National Chemistry Olympiad

and was invited to the National

Youth Leadership Forum on

Medicine at UCLA. Fluent in

Spanish, she spent the summer

after her first year of medical

school in Guatemala volunteering

in healthcare

settings while

studying

medical

Spanish.

Dr. Riedler

has a heart for

music, starting

violin lessons

at eight years

old and serving

as first violinist

in the San

Diego Youth

Symphony

Orchestra. She

performed with

the LJCDS

Singers and took dance lessons for 13

years. While attending Harvard, she

served as first violinist of The Harvard

Pops Orchestra and as a member of

the Harvard TAPS Dance Company.

After receiving her M.D. from the

University of Southern California

Keck School of Medicine, Dr.

Riedler completed an internship and

residency in Otolaryngology - Head

and Neck Surgery at LAC + USC

Medical Center in Los Angeles.

A doctor at heart

As a resident, she performed

nearly 3,000 procedures, earned

awards for research on head and

neck cancer, cartilage grafting in

rhinoplasty, and facial paralysis

surgery, and was named Chief

Resident in her final year.

Dr. Riedler completed a fellowship

in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive

Surgery under the direction of Dr.

Jonathan Sykes, former president

of the American Academy of Facial

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

When not looking after patients, Dr. Riedler enjoys baking,

cooking, cycling and surfing. She compares preparing to cook

with preparing for surgery, pointing out the thoughtfulness and

planning common to both in the cooking principle, Mise En

Place, literally, putting everything in its place.

“The team of surgeons at La Jolla Cosmetic are honored to

welcome Dr. Riedler to a practice that shares both vision and

values,” Marie Olesen, President of La Jolla Cosmetic shared

with GB Magazine. “She brings a unique perspective as a

female facial plastic surgeon.”

A 20-time “Best of San Diego” award-winning cosmetic

surgery practice and medical spa, La Jolla Cosmetic was

founded in 1988 as one

of the first plastic surgery

centers in the world to

focus solely on cosmetic

surgery. In a beautiful fusion

of art and technology, the

practice’s 9,000 square

foot Centre provides a

peaceful ambiance and

is conveniently located

in La Jolla. LJC has a

proud history of being

philanthropically involved in

the San Diego community.

MAKING MEDICARE EASIER

SBHIS is a highly experienced, trusted

and well-recognized agency in the

Medicare coverage space. They are

100% dedicated to serving Medicare

beneficiaries and those soon to

become eligible. SBHIS was founded

in 2005 and today has a national

footprint with offices in various

states. As an agency, they have

helped close to 200,000 Medicare

beneficiaries find the right coverage

for their personal needs. The

agency’s purpose is to Make Medicare Easier by providing

options, education and advocacy for their clients.

Finding the right plan is a unique exercise because each client is

different and so are their needs. Choosing the right plan is one of

the most important decisions Medicare beneficiaries must make and

one they need to review on an annual basis. The type of coverage

and the benefits offered by a plan will vary and impact the amount

of money a member is responsible to pay out of pocket for their

healthcare. It will also determine the healthcare network they will

have access to, how and where they will get their care as well as the

quality of the experience when accessing healthcare services.

Not understanding your coverage, benefits or options can lead to

a delay in care and referrals. It can also cost the member more

either through overpayment of premium or under coverage. SBHIS

agents will serve as your Medicare Guides and make the process

simpler. They will make sure your healthcare needs are met, your

prescriptions are covered, your providers and hospitals of choice

are available to you, all while making sure your current treatments

are not disrupted. Best of all, every service an SBHIS agent provides

is free of charge. For more information on SBHIS or to book a free

appointment please call (619) 609-0583.

propósito de la agencia es el de Hacer más

Fácil Medicare, brindando opciones, educación

y defensoría a sus clientes.

16 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2022

SBHIS Agent

and Client

Gloria Corral and

PIQE Team Members

Advancing the hopes, aspirations and

achievements families hold for their children

is at the heart of our Parent Institute for

Quality Education (PIQE) work. We are at

the forefront of family engagement, one

of the most influential factors in improving

students’ educational outcomes for future

success. It reduces student absenteeism and dropout rates

while increasing children’s learning at home, improving test

scores, and student self-esteem.

Our parent graduation ceremonies are a testament to our

mission, as family members of all ages celebrate their loved

ones’ achievements. Recently, in partnership with UC San

Diego, we celebrated the completion of STEM workshops

from five Sweetwater Unified School District high schools -

San Ysidro, Sweetwater, Southwest, Mar Vista, and Chula

Vista. Nearly 100 parents completed the four-week program

that gives parents the tools to learn about STEM and cultivate

their student’s interest in a STEM career. Keynote speakers

included Frank Silva, UC San Diego Chief of Staff, Office

of the Vice-Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion;

Griselda Delgado, Director of State and Federal Programs at

Sweetwater Union High School District and Southwestern

Community College Trustee; and Roberta Camarena, UC San

STEM Workshop

Since 1987,

PIQE has

supported more

than 721,000

California

families in 16

languages

- positively

shaping the

academic

trajectory of

more than two

million students.

A 2018 study by

San Diego State

Touring the UC

San Diego Campus

University found a higher rate of high school graduations and

college enrollments from students whose parents participated

in PIQE’s Family Engagement program compared to those from

similar backgrounds.

During these pandemic-fractured school years, it was vital to

listen to our families and respond to family and school needs.

During the 2020-2021 school year, we made more than 60,000

phone calls to families in their home language to ensure they

were connected to vital services as we shifted from in-person

classrooms to remote learning.

“Failure was not an option,” PIQE President and CEO Gloria

Corral shared with GB Magazine. “Despite economic hardships,

lack of digital know-how, fear, and heartbreak, 18,000 families

from nearly 300 California schools joined us virtually, partnering

with teachers

and schools,

supporting

each other,

and helping

their children

succeed.”

PIQE worked

to onboard

families

to digital

technology

using what they

had on hand,

including old

smartphones, tablets, and their children’s Chromebooks. We

built bridges, eased isolation, enhanced digital adoption, and

we did it together, remotely.

PIQE is celebrating 35 years of serving its communities,

building partnerships, and empowering families to take an

active role in their children’s education. Our journey began

when our founders put passion into practice, igniting our

commitment to social justice and educational equity. Today,

with offices in seven California regions and a national team

supporting school districts throughout the country, our mission

continues! We are proud of our history and honored by all who

have given their time, talent, and treasures, so that children

can thrive no matter their circumstances. Follow our families

Sharp HealthCare

ENVISIONING the Future

Sharp Prebys Innovation

& Education Center

For more than four generations, Sharp

HealthCare has been dedicated to the

San Diego community. As the region’s

largest and most comprehensive health

care system, Sharp touches the lives

of more than 1 million individuals each

year. Keeping with its mission as a

non-for-profit institution serving all of

those who need care, Sharp provided

a record-setting $500 million in

community benefits within the last year

- including charity, uncompensated and

undercompensated care.

Now, Sharp HealthCare is strengthening its commitment to

the community. The Foundations of Sharp HealthCare have

launched ENVISION – a $250 million fundraising campaign in

support of Sharp’s $2 billion, decade-long investment in San

Diego’s health care future. “At Sharp, we believe a first-class

health care system is a vital part of a community,” Bill Littlejohn,

Senior Vice President and Chief Executive officer of the

Foundations of Sharp HealthCare shared with GB Magazine.

“This is perhaps the most sweeping group of initiatives to

enhance health care delivery in San Diego’s history.”

The ENVISION campaign is framed by four goals, known as the

Aspirations of Excellence:

• Provide clinical and technical innovation

• Enhance knowledge and learning

• Create an extraordinary patient experience

• Deliver this world-class care to every community

28 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2022

“With our philanthropic partners, we are embarking on a

new generation of transformation: a journey to deliver the

health care of the future,” Littlejohn added.

The ENVISION campaign includes more than a dozen

initiatives, including the Prebys Innovation & Education

Center, modernization of Sharp Memorial Hospital and

Sharp’s Kearny Mesa medical campus, continued growth of

Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, enhancements to mental

health services at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital and expanded

emergency and intensive care services at Sharp Coronado

Hospital. The campaign will also support the creation of the

Sharp Grossmont Hospital Neurosciences Center, Sharp’s

fourth hospice home, expansion of the Sharp Rees-Stealy

clinic network and growth of the Terrence and Barbara

Caster Institute for Nursing Excellence, which provides

nursing scholarships and training.

“At Sharp, we are guided by a relentless devotion to doing

what is best for our community and our patients, every

time,” says Chris Howard, President and Chief Executive

Officer of Sharp HealthCare. “We are excited to embark on

this inspiring initiative that further drives our commitment

to The Sharp Experience - delivering the advanced

technology, medical expertise and modern health care

centers that will serve San Diego generations to come.”

The ENVISION campaign formally kicks off this month,

with more than $80 million already raised toward the $250

million goal. “We are humbled by the extraordinary support

for ENVISION from across the Sharp HealthCare family and

the community,” Littlejohn says. “As was the case seven

decades ago when Thomas E. Sharp donated $500,000

to establish a hospital in his son’s memory, San Diego is

coming together to enable Sharp to continue our mission

to improve the health of the community with a commitment

to excellence in all that we do.”

Collaboration

Burnham Center

for Community

Advancement

Good Ideas aren’t enough.

The Burnham Center for

Community Advancement

(BCCA) is San Diego’s first

“think-and-do tank.” Established

in 2021 with the mission to help

make the San Diego binational

region a better place to live,

work and play for all, BCCA is

unique in its focus to ensure

innovative ideas become

realized actions.

Founder and long-time civic

leader Malin Burnham started the

new organization based on his

personal motto of “Community

Before Self.” He envisions

BCCA serving as a nexus point

where community stakeholders and multi-sector partners come

together to identify regional needs, find innovative solutions, and

tackle some of our most pressing issues.

La Jolla resident and nonprofit leader Tad Seth Parzen was

tapped to be President and CEO and the organization has

30 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2022

Tad Seth Parzen

and Malin Burnham

already hit the ground running.

BCCA has been a key partner

with Design Forward Alliance

and UC San Diego’s Design

Lab and succeeded in winning

the bid for San Diego-Tijuana

to be the World Design Capital

2024. The bid to the World

Design Organization highlighted

the culture of cross-border

collaboration and the role of

innovative human-centered

design toward building more

interconnected communities.

San Diego-Tijuana are two

countries and two cities, but

one region and community that

are continuously redefining and

redesigning our cross-border

home.

True to its community-centered

orientation, BCCA seeks to

bring people and ideas together

in a neutral platform for the

betterment of the region. In

addition to Burnham’s vision

and Tad’s leadership, the

center will be led by community

advisory groups and a board

of directors of diverse civic

leaders, including Paula Cordeiro, Peter Ellsworth, Lisette

Islas, Jack McGrory and Vincent Mudd. The Center will rely on

civic organizations and residents to find solutions to housing

affordability, advancing an equitable workforce system, and

revitalizing Balboa Park, to name a few.

Advancement

(BCCA) es el primer

espacio “pensaractuar”

de San Diego.

Comenzó en el 2021 con

la misión de lograr que San

Diego sea una mejor región

binacional donde todos

puedan vivir, trabajar y

jugar, por lo que el enfoque

de BCCA es único,

asegurándose de promover

y llevar a la acción las ideas

innovadoras.

Malin Burnham, líder

cívico y su fundador,

decidió comenzar esta

nueva organización a

Tijuana

San Diego-Tijuana

como la Capital

del Diseño Mundial

2024. El concurso

presentado al

World Design

Organization

destacaba la

cultura de la

colaboración entre

ambos lados de la

frontera y el rol del

diseño innovador

centrado en el

ser humano en

pos de construir

comunidades

más

interconectadas.

San Diego-

Tijuana son dos

países, dos

ciudades, pero

una región y

una comunidad

que están

continuamente

redefiniendo y

rediseñando

nuestro hogar a

Islas, Jack McGrory y Vincent Mudd. El centro dependerá de

las organizaciones civiles y de los residentes para encontrar

soluciones a temas como el de las viviendas asequibles,

el avance en un sistema equitativo de la fuerza laboral, la

revitalización del Parque Balboa entre otros.

both mentally and

Sisters Anna and

unstable home.

Their father was an

alcoholic and their

mother was not ready

for parenthood. Their

mother took them

away, and in her care,

they were exposed

to drugs, weapons,

homelessness, and

severe abuse and

often left for days

or weeks at a time,

without food. All this

led them into foster care.

May is National Foster Care Month and local non-profit

Promises2Kids whose mission is to create a brighter for foster

children, offers programs ensuring that youth have the skills,

opportunities, and resources to succeed. From the moment

they enter care through adulthood, Promises2Kids provides the

necessary support system.

There are over 3,000 current and former foster youth in San

due to abuse and neglect. Many are separated from siblings,

move frequently, attend countless schools, while still suffering

recently took 73

youth to Disneyland

made possible

by the Arbonne

“little kids” for the day, going on as many rides as possible.

Smiling ear to ear and walking shoulder to shoulder, the two

were inseparable.

From seeing Disney’s characters and going on rides, the youth

were grateful for this magical day! The highlight was taking

photos with their siblings, as a way to always remember their

We’ve Hit

The Wall.

The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial

is far more than just a cross. It is one of

the most unique veteran memorials in

America, and is the only one honoring

veterans, living and deceased, from the

Revolutionary War to the current war on

terror. More than 5,700 beautifully etched

black granite plaques honor Presidents,

Medal of Honor recipients, admirals,

generals, privates, airmen, seamen, and

thousands of veterans whose names may not

be familiar but who proudly served our

nation and helped preserve the freedoms we

enjoy as Americans.

Critical capacity has been reached and we must

build more walls! This is where you come in.

A plan is in place to expand five of the existing

walls to provide space for 2,000 more plaques.

This will allow us to continue to preserve the

legacy of our Veterans and active duty servicemembers

for approximately 10 more years.

But we can’t do it without your support!

Take your place alongside our Beacon of Freedom

Honor Roll in paying tribute to those to

whom we owe so much.

Leader

Manny Rubio

CATHOLIC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION’S NEW CEO

Giving Back Magazine recently

sat down with the new CEO

of The Catholic Community

Foundation of San Diego. The

Foundation was established

in 2015 to assist individuals

and organizations in providing

lasting financial support to the

Catholic religious, educational

and charitable organizations

of San Diego and Imperial

Manny Rubio

counties in California for

generations to come. Donors

have the option of establishing a fund from which they can

recommend how, when, and where their donated funds are

distributed to charitable causes.

GB: What do you feel is the biggest strength of the Catholic

Community Foundation of San Diego right now?

The Catholic Community Foundation of San Diego (CCFSD)

is in a unique and opportune position within our community

to serve individuals, families

and organizations through

a lens of faith and service.

As Catholics, we are called

to be good stewards in

our communities and we

believe that in sharing your

time, your talents, and your

treasures with one another,

we can have a profoundly

positive impact.

Thankfully, in San Diego

and Imperial Counties there

are so many options for

philanthropy and avenues

for individuals and families to

support organizations that

are doing such important

work in our community. What

distinguishes CCFSD is that

we approach this from a

truly Catholic perspective of

faith and gratitude. The four

pillars of our organization are

support for our Catholic Parishes, Catholic Schools, Vocations,

and Social Service agencies.

What also distinguishes us is that the funds that are held by

CCFSD are invested in a values-based strategy that aligns with

the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. And while we do not

only support Catholic organizations, we are proud to support any

organization that aligns with the values that we hold so close.

42 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2022

GB: What goal do

you have for the

Foundation?

First and foremost,

my goal is to

honor God and

the Catholic Faith

through service.

As a relatively

new foundation,

right now our

focus is on getting

our mission and

vision out into the

community. I hope

to share that not

only are we a positive outlet for

philanthropy, but we can also

make a difference.

I am a believer that good work

and good sense find each

other. In my few months in

this position, I have seen that

there is a community who is

looking for that positive outlet,

and I hope that we can be that

solution for many.

GB: What was the path you took

to get to where you are today?

I have spent my entire career

in service to the community.

As a student at the University

of San Diego many years ago,

I saw that there are ways to

integrate Faith and Service.

I spent some time on the

East Coast at Georgetown

University and learned

nonprofit management in my

graduate work. Upon returning

to California, I have worked for

several nonprofits, foundations,

and most recently, spent

several years working in service

of a local public school system.

GB: What have been the

biggest challenges you have had

to overcome?

Being a “young” organization,

we are still working to establish

ourselves. And although we

have done very well in the few

years of our work, there is so

much more that we can do,

and I really hope that

the community can

support our efforts

and our vision.

GB: What are your

outside interests?

At the end of my

workdays, it is all

about family for me. As

a Mexican American

married to a Chaldean

American, family is

where it starts for

us. My wife Heather

and my kids Olivia

and Lucas are my

everything. Besides

family, I am a life-long

Padres fan and a fan

of soccer, basketball,

hockey and Formula 1.

Sports brings people

together and I love

that we can find

community in it.

Deborah Szekely

99 AND GOING STRONG

BY: NICHOLE NAOUM

Few would dispute

that Deborah Szekely

has lived life to the

fullest. Known as

the “godmother of

wellness,” the Brooklynborn

wellness guru has

dedicated her life to

improving the spiritual

and physical wellbeing

of others across

California and Mexico.

As she nears 100, she

still walks the walk.

And unlike many of her

contemporaries, her

passion for healthy living

was instilled during her

early years and remains

strong to this day.

Deborah was born in the spring of 1922, at the height of the

prohibition era. She shared with GB Magazine, “When I was

four, my mother became the Vice President of the New York

Vegetarian Society and that set me on a path for life.” With

the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression that

followed, Deborah and her family relocated to Tahiti, where

food was in abundance and the opportunities were limitless.

In the latter 1930s, when

the employment rate of

American women was

just over 25 percent,

Deborah worked in

Guadalajara as an

assistant to philosopher,

psychologist, and

natural living enthusiast,

Edmund Bordeaux

Szekely, who she

later married in 1939.

Together, the pair set

out to open a one-ofa-kind

“eco” resort in

Tecate, Baja California

just South of the border

in Mexico.

In 1940, Rancho La

Puerta opened its doors.

This world-renowned

fitness camp and spa

features spacious

studios, weekly cooking

classes, and 32 acres of

beautifully landscaped

gardens.

As Rancho La Puerta

grew in popularity,

Deborah and Edmund decided to build a smaller, more private

retreat in Escondido. Launched in 1958, Golden Door has

hosted guests from the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Oprah Winfrey,

Martha Stewart, and Barbara Streisand. While the property

has been a temporary sanctuary for a number of A-listers,

Deborah’s altruism never wavered. 100 percent of Golden

Door’s net profits go to philanthropic causes.

At age 79, Deborah launched the New Americans Museum at

Liberty Station in 2008 to chronicle the lives of immigrants and

44 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2022

Deborah’s accolades stretch

beyond praise from museum

and wellness center visitors. In

2014, Deborah was inducted

into the San Diego County

Women’s Hall of Fame by the

Women’s Museum of California,

the Commission on the Status

of Women, the Women’s

Center at UC San Diego, and

the Department of Women’s

Studies at San Diego State

University.

celebrate their accomplishments through thought-provoking exhibitions, crafts and artwork.

She explains, “The goal was to help educate young people on what immigrants bring to our

country and foster tolerance among all Americans. Using thoughtful visual arts programs to

support our storytelling efforts, we are taking steps to create a more just and tolerant society.”

When asked what advice

she would give to today’s

entrepreneurs-in-the-making,

given her long and varied life

experience, Deborah answered

matter-of-factly, “Just because

something does not exist does

not mean it should not exist.

Come up with an idea and see it

through from start to finish.”

Ready to see a change

in homelessness for San Diego?

HOMELESSNESS is not a just a housing

problem, a hunger crisis or a drug epidemic.

The Mission helped me recover,

accept my past, find my self-worth

and learn to love myself.

At the SAN DIEGO RESCUE MISSION, our goal

is getting people off the streets permanently

by providing holistic recovery programs to

transform lives.

Free to Thrive

WHAT MORE CAN BE DONE TO HELP HUMAN

TRAFFICKING SURVIVORS IN SAN DIEGO?

Southwest

Airlines has a

long-standing

commitment to

being a good global citizen. Our Company recognizes the

importance of being aware of societal issues impacting

communities around the world, especially those directly

related to the airline industry - including Human Trafficking.

For years. Southwest Airlines has proudly supported

multiple nonprofit organizations whose efforts help with

the rescue, recovery and restoration of Human Trafficking

survivors - including

Free to Thrive. Part of

Free to Thrive’s work

is helping to prevent

human trafficking and violence against women and girls

and serves the legal needs of survivors

of all forms of human trafficking. Together

we will continue to advocate for an end

to human trafficking.

Kelly Knox

Sr. Community Outreach Manager

Southwest Airlines

When attorney Jamie Beck asked that

question to individuals working to

support survivors, she repeatedly

heard the same answer: we need

lawyers. “We all have a role to play in

the fight against human trafficking,”

Jamie says, and she knew hers.

Jamie began her anti-trafficking efforts

as an active member of the Lawyers

Club of San Diego - eventually serving

as its president - by spearheading

the creation of a Human Trafficking

Collaborative (HTC) focused on three

discrete needs: legal and community

education, policy advocacy and survivor support. Jamie also began taking on pro bono

cases while working full-time at Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP, the largest

San Diego-based law firm. Through her volunteer and pro bono work, Jamie came to

realize that she needed to do more. Thus, Free to Thrive was born, working to bring San

Diego’s lawyers, law firms and law schools together to help address this serious need.

To execute these

works hand in hand

that human

can live the lives

they always

Free to Thrive

offers survivors of

- free of charge.

Free to Thrive

also connects

survivors with

and wellness programs. Additionally, Free to Thrive provides a

variety of online and in person community awareness, legal and

law enforcement trainings.

In a little over five years, Free to Thrive has had an incredible

impact in the lives of human trafficking survivors. Since 2017,

Free to Thrive has helped 244 survivors with 834 legal services

and prevailed in

eliminating 214

criminal records

in five counties in

California. Importantly,

Free to Thrive has

also helped survivors

obtain 45 restraining

orders, helped 33

survivors divorce their

traffickers and helped

71 survivors gain or

increase custody and

visitation time with

their children. Since

2020, Free to Thrive

has helped educate

3,086 people, from

over 32 states,

through virtual

Free to Thrive’s

successes go

well beyond the

survivors that

they have helped

directly. The

success of Free

to Thrive can also

be seen by the

policies that they

have assisted in

passing (AB 262

new branch of

Free to Thrive

developing in Los

Angeles, and the

overwhelming support of the community, community partners

and donors over the years.

Free to Thrive is incredibly grateful for the support of Southwest

Airlines - their support speaks volumes about the importance of

Free to Thrive’s mission. Without supporters like Southwest, Free

to Thrive would not be able to help human trafficking survivors

and their families reach the bright futures that they deserve.

Nutrition

15 Years of Feeding

San Diego

LOCAL FEEDING AMERICA AFFILIATE HAS DISTRIBUTED

OVER 300 MILLION MEALS SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 2007

A

lot has happened over 15 years of Feeding

San Diego, but the mission of the hunger

relief organization remains the same: to end

hunger through food rescue. Founded by

Gwendolyn Sontheim, Feeding San Diego’s

first distribution was held on October 9,

2007 in the parking lot at San Diego Rescue

Mission. Several weeks later, San Diego County suffered from

disastrous firestorms that displaced hundreds of thousands of

individuals. In the first week of the fire with only two employees,

Feeding San Diego secured and delivered 515,000 pounds of

emergency supplies, including food, water and other grocery

items, to evacuees, firefighters and volunteers. From the start,

the organization has been ready to spring into action whatever

the crisis may be, from wildfire to a global pandemic.

Now led by CEO Dan Shea, the hunger relief and food rescue

organization has grown from two employees to over 65 and

distributes an average of 40.3 million meals annually. Hunger

was thrust into the forefront of public awareness during the

pandemic and Feeding San Diego continues to support the

many San Diegans affected by the after effects: the highest

inflation of the past 40 years, record-high gas prices, global

unrest and a volatile economy. With the incredible support of

the community during the first year of the pandemic, the nonprofit

is focused on meeting its ambitious goals.

This year, Feeding San Diego is dedicated to establishing and

growing its new Produce Pantry Program to provide even more

fresh produce to the community, expanding its School Pantry

Program, which was upended by the pandemic, its food rescue

program in response to Senate Bill 1383, which mandates

food to hunger relief organizations like

Feeding San Diego, and continuing

its Together Tour large-scale food

distributions, which have provided

food to over 287,000 San Diegans

since the initiative started in February

2021. To look to the future, the

organization is celebrating its past.

“I founded Feeding San Diego

because I believe that access to

nutritious food is a basic human right.

Looking back on 15 years of service

to the community, it is humbling to

be a part of this organization that

provides what we now know to be

an essential service and touches

so many lives in the process,”

Founder and Board Chair Gwendolyn

Sontheim shares with GB Magazine.

community and agency partners. The

time is now to get involved.

Partnership

Jewish Federation of

San Diego County

RAISING AWARENESS AND DEVELOPING NEW SOLUTIONS TO

FIGHT POVERTY IN THE SAN DIEGO JEWISH COMMUNITY

Jewish Federation

of San Diego

County

(Federation)

partners with organizations throughout the local Jewish

community to achieve its mission: to broaden and deepen

engagement in Jewish life to strengthen Jewish identity, foster

dynamic connections with Israel, and care for all Jews in need.

Currently, the Federation is working to mobilize community

resources, leaders, and organizations to address the

community’s most critical needs, including the urgent efforts to

respond to poverty in the San Diego Jewish Community.

“With 16-20 percent of Jewish households earning less than

$30,000 annually, many Jewish families struggle to make

ends meet but often are unaware of resources that can lift

them up,” Darren Schwartz, Chief Planning & Strategy Officer

for Jewish Federation of San Diego County shared with GB

Magazine. “We can help families access support that makes a

significant difference in their lives.”

Through a

monthly Working

Group on

Jewish Poverty

& Sustainability,

community

partners identify

the challenges

facing Jewish

families and

ways to

overcome them.

Along with

Federation, the

Working Group

includes Hebrew

Free Loan,

Impact Cubed,

Jewish Community Foundation San Diego, Jewish Family

Service, the Kindness Initiative and Seacrest at Home.

These organizations are educating those who could benefit

from the earned income tax credit and assistance provided

by 2-1-1 San Diego and the San Diego EITC Coalition. The

Working Group encourages all San Diegans to help share

important information about accessing this credit within the

community.

“One barrier to accessing this financial support is lack of

information; other barriers revolve around filing taxes and

having other necessary documents,” adds Schwartz. “The

good news is that there is free assistance to access this tax

credit. Any household earning less than $60,000 annually is

eligible. We ask everyone to share this information via email,

social media, in-person, and any other way you can.”

La Jewish Federation

del condado de San

Diego (Federation)

Group on Jewish Poverty & Sustainability (Grupo

de trabajo sobre la pobreza y la sustentabilidad

judía), los socios comunitarios identifican los

desafíos a los que las familias judías se enfrentan

y las posibles soluciones. Además de la

Federation, el Working Group incluye a: Hebrew

Free Loan, Impact Cubed, Jewish Community

Foundation San Diego, Jewish Family Service y

the Kindness Initiative and Seacrest at Home.

Home of

Guiding Hands

FOSTER CARE AWARENESS MONTH

A Current

AFHA Family

66 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2022

May is recognized as National Foster Care Awareness month. While foster

care is traditionally known for children, Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) is one

of the few agencies in San Diego with foster care program for adults. In 2021

there were roughly 1,500 adults in foster care throughout the state. HGH,

which serves more than 3,500 people with developmental and intellectual

disabilities, offers this unique program where adults achieve the dream of

living with a family they can call their own. The program connects people

with special needs to loving families. All you need is a warm heart, a loving home, and a readiness

to make difference in someone’s life. And in return, you will gain a life changing experience.

“Being part of the HGH

Foster Care Program

has reminded me to

value the simplicity of

joy and laughter.”

Teressa is relatively new

to the HGH foster care

program, but it has

been her lifelong dream

to be a foster parent.

She is thrilled to provide a warm and enriching home to a

young woman named Maria.

Teressa shares, “Being part of the foster care program

has been the most rewarding and meaningful experience

I have encountered. It is amazing to see Maria feel that

she finally has a place and family to call her own. There

is nothing like being able to mentor your foster client and

watch them reach milestones that would have not been

possible otherwise. Maria and I spend time together as a

family and are learning from one another each day. It has

been an adventure being part of the adult foster program

and a rewarding experience.”

Maria and Teressa

“My life and my

family’s life are forever

changed from being

part of this program.”

Ana had raised her three

biological children when

she decided she wanted

to foster. And not just

foster anyone, but two

young men with special needs. Anthony and John came into

Ana’s life twenty years ago.

Ana shares “My biological children are now adults living

on their own but were teenagers when Anthony and John

came into our lives. They grew up together and view each

other as siblings. We all spend time together for weekly

dinners, holidays, and family vacations. The boys are not my

clients but my sons.” Anthony and John are included and

experience the joys of their home and family unit.

Ana with Anthony and

John at Disneyland

Ana assists the boys with their daily activities such as

cleaning, preparing meals, and money management. Ana

shares “The boys have become such a huge part of our

family that we cannot imagine life without them.”

If you can see yourself as a foster parent, HGH is always looking for people who want

to open their heart and home to an adult with special needs. We offer extensive training,

one-on-one support, and a generous monthly stipend for every foster family. For more

information, contact Lindsey Klaus at (619) 873-8209 or visit www.guidinghands.org.

Health

Butterfly

Transformations

BY ADAMA DYONIZIAK, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CHAMPIONS FOR HEALTH

“Every minute of

every day, an ASMG

anesthesiologist is

providing a pro bono

community service

somewhere in San

Diego County,” said Dr.

Andrew Zimmerman,

CEO of Anesthesia

Service Medical

Group. At Champions

for Health, Project

Access San Diego

patients have been the

beneficiaries of these

nerve-numbing, sleeplike

inducing services

since 2010. Project

Access provides

a medical referral

pathway for uninsured

adults up to 250% of

federal poverty level,

who are not eligible for

Medi-Cal, Medicare,

and cannot afford

insurance. Champions

Peter Raudaskoski

for Health arranges

elective, medically

necessary outpatient procedures by leveraging donated care.

ASMG has been a good steward in the San Diego community

since its inception. Nearly 1,000 Project Access patients have

been the recipients of successful procedures and operations

where anesthesiology services valued at $600,000 were being

provided. Dr. Peter

Raudaskoski, Chief

Medical Officer, shares

that, “Patients are

placing their life in our

hands because they

trust they will receive

a safe and state of

the art outcome.”

ASMG’s strength is in

the level of consistent

performance achieved

regardless of which

anesthesiologist is

involved.

ASMG was first

formed in 1946

by San Diego

anesthesiologists

Douglass Batten

and Gordon

Langsdorf. Back then,

anesthesiologists

were required to

furnish their own

equipment and no

recovery rooms

existed in San Diego

before 1953. Today

ASMG has over 270 members, providing their services to

Sharp Hospitals, most Scripps Hospitals, Tri-City Medical

Center, Rady Children’s Hospital, and 4 of the 6 trauma

centers in the county.

Museum

Ten Years of Mass Creativity

The New Children’s

Museum is kicking

off its 10th annual

Mass Creativity

program with inperson

workshops

at seven community centers

throughout San Diego later

this month. Mass Creativity is

the contemporary arts-based

children’s museum’s signature

outreach program that brings

hands-on art-making opportunities to diverse communities in

the county.

“This year will be the first time in two years that we will host

in-person workshops at the community centers, after a shift

to virtual during the pandemic through art kits and Zoom

gatherings,” the Museum’s Executive Director and CEO,

Elizabeth Yang-Hellewell shared with GB Magazine. “The

Mass Creativity program is essential to our efforts in making

interactive and collaborative art experiences accessible to

families in the wider community, and we are excited to be doing

this beyond the computer screen again.”

The first Mass Creativity workshop will take place

on April 28 in partnership with Casa Familiar at

the Youth and Community Center in San Ysidro,

followed by six more workshops in May and June. At

each workshop, community participants will create

individual Leporello or Accordion Books, as well as

paint, draw and collage on a giant canvas that represents their

community’s story. The seven canvases will then be displayed

as the collective pages of a life-size book at The New Children’s

Museum on Mass Creativity Day.

“The workshop projects are an exercise of imaginative

storytelling and reflective of the Museum’s focus on early

literacy learning and engagement,” said Iyari Arteaga, the

Museum’s Community Programs Manager who spearheads

the Mass Creativity program. “Through these workshops, we

hope to give families a creative outlet to express and reflect the

challenges they may have faced over the past couple years.”

Following the workshops, Mass Creativity Day is the culminating

celebration of art, creativity and community to be held on June

25 at the downtown Museum and the adjacent street and park.

The event features art-making activities, music, performances,

food and free Museum admission for all visitors. Island Avenue

will be closed between Front and Island to allow participants

82 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2022

to move freely from the park to the Museum, with some

performances taking place on the street.

“Our families are looking forward to participating in the

Mass Creativity workshops and seeing their creations

displayed at the Museum on Mass Creativity Day,” said

Rachel R. Pineulas-Morineau, Community Engagement

Director at SBCS. “We have been partnering with the

Museum for several years and it has been very impactful

in exposing our community members to art and engaging

them with art-making experiences.”

The participating community centers include Barrio Logan

College Institute, Casa Familiar, City Heights/Weingart

Library, San Diego LGBT Community Center, SBCS,

Skyline Hills Library and Solutions for Change. Skyline Hills

Library and City Heights/Weingart Library’s community

workshops are open to the public. All other locations are by

invitation only.

Funding for Mass Creativity is provided in part by The

Conrad Prebys Foundation, First 5 San Diego, City of San

Homelessness

MORE THAN A PASSING CIRCUMSTANCE FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

In 2021, the Therapeutic Childcare Center provided

more than 24,000 services to infants, toddlers,

preschoolers, school-age children and teens

Homelessness is more than a passing

circumstance for children in need. It can

leave a lasting impact on a child’s future -

trauma, developmental delays, educational

disadvantages. Without somewhere safe

to lay their heads at the end of the day,

children who are homeless often find

themselves with fears no child should ever have to realize: fear

of being hungry and cold, fear of being harmed, fear of being

alone. A healthy environment, nourishing food, and love and

support are critical for a child’s brain development. Without

those things, children are more likely to fall behind in their

physical, emotional and behavioral development.

The Therapeutic Childcare Center at Father Joe’s Villages

provides a caring environment where children feel safe and

thrive. Therapeutic Childcare works to end the cycle of

homelessness by ensuring that children have the resources

they need for success. Together, the staff of Therapeutic

Childcare, including Behavioral Health Clinicians and Child

Development Specialists, help children achieve developmental

milestones, practice healthy socialization, ensure physical

wellness and complete nutrition, and so much more.

When he and his family became homeless, Patrick witnessed

firsthand the importance of Therapeutic Childcare. After being

let go from his job as a Lead Electronic Assembly Specialist,

88 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2022

Patrick became unable to pay his rent and he and his family

ended up losing their home. Initially, Patrick, his fiancé, and

their five children lived out of their car. After the car was

repossessed, they were forced to live on the streets. Patrick

lamented, “That’s the worst memory - worrying about whether

somebody is going to come by and do something to my kids,

and the kids being all cold on the sidewalk.”

Patrick sought help from Father Joe’s Villages and was able to

move his family into their Family Living Center. He then enrolled

his three youngest children into the Therapeutic Childcare

Center. Patrick’s 4-year-old son began exhibiting behavioral

problems and anger issues. He had difficulty communicating

with other kids and exhibited some violent displays of

aggression against teachers.

Fortunately, the professional team of Child Development

Specialists and Mental Health Clinicians in the Therapeutic

Childcare Center stepped in to help. Patrick’s son was able to

receive support and treatment to ensure he developed healthy

coping mechanisms and behaviors. Patrick’s son gained the

communication skills he needed to effectively express himself.

“We’ve seen such a difference in his behavior. I am so proud of

him,” Patrick shared with GB Magazine.

Having skilled professionals caring for their kids during the day

meant that Patrick and his fiancé could focus their time and

energy on finding stable work and securing their new home.

Last year, 400 children and parents like Patrick and his son

participated in the Therapeutic Childcare Center’s specialized

programming. Additionally, the Center provided more than

24,000 services to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age

children and teens.

Every child deserves a happy and healthy life. That is why

Father Joe’s Villages created the Children’s Champions

Fund to protect these critical programs that rely on private

philanthropy. Contributions to the Children’s Champions

Fund strengthen the range of unique and proven

interventions Father Joe’s Villages’ Therapeutic Childcare

Center offers to children and families in need.

Cristina Orvananos

BY ANGELICA GAVALDON

During the pandemic, she took on

a new challenge as she noticed she

wanted to eat good, healthy food

without having to cook every single

day. That is how Two My Kitchen was

born. While developing this business,

she partnered up with a catering

company in Mexico City, Mayita, who

has all the know-how when it comes

to recipes that freeze well. They also

have implemented a technology known

as “Blast Freezing” that helps preserve

freshness, taste, consistency, and

opportunity to help others. Cristina

Orvananos is one of those people.

Cristina was born and raised in

Mexico City before moving to

Coronado with the love of her life and

her two kids. During the pandemic,

she started a business selling healthy

homemade food, so families could enjoy

eating nutritiously at home. She is not only

a mom, but a successful entrepreneur who

finds time to balance her life in a way we

can all learn from. Here is a day in her life:

6:30 AM RISE & SHINE

Two My Kitchen

7:30 PM DINNER

After picking up kids in the evening,

taking them to soccer, and doing

homework, they all get together as

a family and have dinner by 7:30

pm. She wraps up her day by 9:30

pm and goes to bed to get the rest

she needs for another busy and

productive day.

Cristina shared with us that, in her free

time, she loves to explore Coronado.

One of her favorite places is the Hotel

del Coronado where she enjoys sitting

and relaxing by the beach.

Cristina wakes up and mediates for 30 minutes. Spiritual health is very important for

her, which is why she meditates, stays close to her faith, and attends mass daily.

After meditating, she wakes up her children, eats breakfast with them, and gets them

to school. She then exercises, gets ready for the rest of the day, and goes to work.

9:30 AM WORK

Cristina loves challenges and staying productive. Back when she lived in Mexico City,

her first business was a fitness brand known as ZUDA. Today, it has two locations

and is operated by some of her partners.

leader in San Diego County, they are

committed to providing an extensive array of

compassionate and affordable family-oriented

San Ysidro Health - Kimball Highland in National City is a

new 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art health facility, designed

structure. San Ysidro Health is focused on creating a

space to overcome barriers of isolation, transportation,

outreach, and more time to serve, integrate, and

empower families and seniors.

“Our Kimball Highland location is San Ysidro Health’s

most ambitious ground-up construction project to date.

We are excited to increase access to area families offering

comprehensive multi-disciplinary health care including

dental services for all under one roof,” states Kevin

Mattson, President and CEO of San Ysidro Health.

Funding Needs

Since 1969, San Ysidro Health has strived to

make their mission a reality for the people they

serve throughout San Diego County. As experts in

delivering quality healthcare and social services,

San Ysidro Health is seeking support to help

build and equip their new facility in National

City.

Currently, the City of National City:

• Has the highest rate in San Diego county of

seniors living in poverty - over 20% vs the

county rate of 7% according to CPI study.

• Zip codes are over represented in COVID

deaths - many were seniors due to overcrowded

multigenerational households. This caused

essential workers to unintentionally infect their

elderly loved ones.

• Has the highest rate of chronic illnesses

amongst seniors in San Diego County. This

includes diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory

disease which impacts their quality of life

significantly especially if left untreated.
