involvement is a monumentally important facet of

Karl’s life. After years of helping kids get through

college, Karl and his wife Cheryl established their

own 501 (c) 3 non-profit, Black Future Foundation

in 2020. The foundation aims to support the

Black leaders of tomorrow by providing college

throughout the US. Karl shared his stance that,

“There are more black men ages 18-25 in jails, than

there are in college. We have to change that.” The

foundation’s goal is to reduce the disparity between

Building

A More

Resilient

World

The Salk Institute’s Campaign for the

Future: Building a More Resilient World

is a bold, five-year, $500 million scientific and

philanthropic effort to attract the people and

acquire the technology and space necessary to

expand and accelerate critical research.

At the center of this audacious goal is the plan to build the

100,000-square-foot Joan and Irwin Jacobs Science and

Technology Center.

Why Now?

Scientific research is now at an inflection

point, driven by advances in technology and

computational science. For the Institute, these

advances have opened thrilling new avenues

of discovery. To seize this opportunity, Salk

must make a significant investment in people,

technology and space.

People

The Campaign will raise funds to recruit

and retain talented faculty and staff in

diverse disciplines.

Technology

The new Jacobs Center will improve

collaboration between biologists, engineers

and computational experts, better enabling

them to develop the tools and latest

technologies needed to keep Salk’s research

ahead of the curve.

Join Us

Joan and Irwin Jacobs, longtime supporters of

the Salk Institute, will contribute $1 for every

$2 donated—up to $100 million, which would

translate to a total of $300 million with matching

funds—for gifts or pledges made to the campaign

between now and September 30, 2022.

Science is a collaborative pursuit, and we invite

you to join us in building a healthier, more

resilient world:

Space

The Jacobs Center will provide critical

research, lab and administrative space

to advance and expand Salk’s scientific

mission.

CONSERVING LOCAL ECOSYSTEMS

Monitoring newly installed native

Surveying Ocean Knoll Canyon

before removing invasive species

San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG)

creates, shares and applies

plant wisdom with people of all

backgrounds, ages and interests.

SDBG has grown its botanical

research, plant conservation,

and land management programs

well beyond the 37 acres of

the Garden’s grounds. These

projects range from nearby Cottonwood Creek

and Ocean Knoll Canyon in Encinitas to the Otay

Mountain Wilderness, just north of the US-Mexico

Border. By expanding its role to address the

planet’s most pressing issues, SDBG is quickly

becoming a model 21 st century public plant science

institution.

Cottonwood Creek

SDBG, in collaboration with the City of Encinitas,

is restoring 15 acres of native habitat on City open

space adjacent to Cottonwood Creek. Since 2020,

SDBG staff,

volunteers

and

partnering

community

organizations

have removed

invasive

species,

Native plants are propagated and

grown in the Garden year round

replacing them with native plants grown at the Botanic

Garden. The project improves endangered bird habitat, adds

seasonal beauty with flowering natives, and enhances the

public’s safety.

Ocean Knoll Canyon

SDBG partnered with the Encinitas Union School District,

California State Coastal Conservancy, and community groups

to lead restoration of Ocean Knoll Canyon, an important

section of the Cottonwood Creek Watershed. The canyon

serves as a refuge for native plants and animals – several

of which are endangered – while providing educational and

recreational space for students and neighbors. In 2022, over

100 cubic yards of invasive plants have already been removed.

Native San Diegan plants will be planted to increase carbon

sequestration, reduce concentrations of pollutants in the

watershed, and increase resilience to climate change. This

restoration will improve the canyon’s ecosystem by providing

a haven for threatened native plants and animals, such as the

Del Mar Manzanita and the coastal California gnatcatcher.

THE WALDEN DIFFERENCE

Walden Family Services’ foster care, adoption and related

support programs ensure that children and youth—especially

kids who need specialized care— can know the stability, love,

and sense of community that family life provides.

Medically fragile children are more likely to thrive with the support of

trained and certified foster and adoptive families, than they would be

confined to skilled nursing facilities and hospitals. Families who support

these children receive additional training to meet the needs of premature

infants, children with juvenile diabetes or other chronic or life-threatening

medical conditions.

Hannah’s Family Center

CLOSING ITS DOORS AFTER 34 YEARS OF

SERVING THE SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY

Mom’s Group and

Children’s Group Members

On June 1, 2022, Hannah’s Family Center will have to close its doors

after providing 34 years of dedicated and compassionate service to

the San Diego community. As a mission-based nonprofit, Hannah’s

Family Center (HFC), previously known as Hannah’s House, has worked

to prevent violence and family abductions when families break apart

while also helping families strengthen the critical bonds to prevent

separations. Since 1988, HFC has helped over 23,000 San Diego

families navigate significant adverse changes, trauma and loss.

In providing services to families at the critical points that have led to the split of the family, HFC

recognized these transition points hold the highest risk of violence to parents and to children.

When a family breaks apart, the courts are often involved and orders on visitation/safe exchange

may be handed down. Last year the organization’s services helped 334 families from across San

Diego County. As experts in co-parenting, the Center worked with both parents to create stronger,

Susan Griffin,

the organization

since its inception.

Ms. Griffin is a

with more than

40 years of experience

working with families

coping with difficult

transitions. She has

guided HFC staff in a

child-centered set of

programs and services,

including therapies

and life skills. She is a

recognized expert on the

co-parenting relationship

and in helping parents

navigate the challenges

of managing children

living in two separate

homes. Under her watch

in 2021, dedicated HFC

staff and volunteers

provided 7,233 hours

of services to local families

in San Diego County,

83% of which were lowincome.

HFC and its board

has done to change lives for

the better in our community.

Self-Care

BY ANGELICA GAVALDON

Self-care

is not just

getting

manicures

or

pedicures,

having

a spa

day, getting massages, or

lounging all day. Taking care

of yourself is NOT selfish,

it is actually the

opposite. Self-care

is doing things you

might not feel like

doing, like exercise

and eating healthy.

If we are not in

good shape, how

can we fully be

there for others?

It is a lot harder

than what it seems, it takes self-discipline, especially if

you are used to taking care of others and their needs

before your own.

Here is a list of the most important things we can do to

practice self-care:

appointments and whatever else he needs to keep up

with his health. I have made it a point to do the same for

myself as I do for him, and prioritize my health too. Annual

checkups, mammograms, gynecologist, and dental are

all part of my medical self-care to-do list. Yes, it is time

consuming, but would it not be worse if we get a disease

we could have prevented with early detection?

Keep up with Mental Health

I was diagnosed with OCD during my pro career, so I make

sure I attend my therapy appointments and keep myself

informed as much as I can on my mental disorder. There

are a lot of stigmas that

come with mental health

conditions. However, those

that accept it and get treated

are healthier for it. Pretending

not to have anything or being

too embarrassed to get help

is not ok. You are not only

damaging yourself, but you

are negatively affecting those

around you.

Meditation and Presence

If there is anything that has truly changed me and has

made me more fulfilled, it is meditating and staying

connected with God. Meditation makes me go inside

myself and opens the pathway

to being present in each

moment in my life. When I am

present with my family, my son,

or my friends, I am fulfilled.

When I am not, I feel empty.

There is nothing more important

than really connecting with the

ones we love.

Setting Boundaries

This has been a hard one for

me. However, while learning to not take anything personal

and understanding that in order to be respected, I need to

respect myself, has been a challenge, I continue to work

on it. For you, it might be removing toxic people from your

life and setting boundaries. For me, it means not tolerating

certain behaviors and removing myself from situations or

people that I love. It means setting limits and loving myself.

Exercise and Eating Healthier Foods

I love exercise, it is a huge part of my life, so this one comes

easy to me. Making healthier food choices is also not hard,

but I know for many it is a struggle. See it as an investment

in your health. Your energy and moods will be better, and you

will be able to be happier with those you love.

Apollo 16

The San Diego Air & Space

MAKING MEDICARE EASIER

SBHIS is a highly experienced, trusted

and well-recognized agency in the

Medicare coverage space. They are

100% dedicated to serving Medicare

beneficiaries and those soon to become

eligible. Often overlooked aspects of

Medicare are who it applies to and how

one can manage your own outcomes.

An example of this ability to choose your own plans and

options comes from how SBHIS helped local community

leaders Claudia and Bob Pecora.

GB: Please tell us a little about yourselves.

We are both long-term La Jolla residents. Bob is a

practicing attorney and a member of the La Jolla Rotary

Club. Claudia teaches Spanish at The Evans School

and is a board member of the Patrons of the Arts in the

Vatican Museums, California Chapter. Claudia and our

daughter Marianna are members of National Charity

League, San Diego Chapter where they enjoy doing

volunteer work. We are also members of the La Jolla

Beach and Tennis Club.

What led you to choose SBHIS as your insurance

agency?

We had seen Pat Salas at various community events and

approached her to learn about Medicare. She shared

with us the story of SBHIS, which is focused exclusively

on assisting Medicare beneficiaries with their coverage

options.

What was your experience as you approached 65?

We were overwhelmed with an abundance of mailers

with misleading information. The government website

was difficult to navigate and frustrating. We found relief

with the SBHIS agents and website, which offered

straightforward information in both English and Spanish.

What happened when you engaged with SBHIS?

Pat introduced us to the agent who would be

handling our account, who then presented us with

32 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2022

Claudia and Bob Pecora at a

fundraising gala in San Diego

her recommendations, answered our questions, and

addressed our concerns. Our questions and concerns

were directly answered. Their professionalism,

knowledge, and “one-on-one” treatment was reassuring

in a time of transition and otherwise confusion. SBHIS

instructed me on how to create our accounts with

Social Security and recommended the best choices for

supplemental and prescription plans through Medicare

and took the mystery out of the process!

Did they charge for their services?

The amazing thing about this entire process was that we

did not incur a fee for SBHIS’s services! Most importantly,

there are no hidden fees or extra charges for working with

a SBHIS Insurance Services agent.

Would you recommend SBHIS?

The truth is we have already sent several friends their way

and will continue to recommend their services! SBHIS is

dedicated to helping Medicare beneficiaries understand,

learn and save, which is invaluable to us, and we knew

that our friends would also benefit from the help.

Are you happy with your current plan?

Very happy! We also get to review the plan when we receive

new information every year and SBHIS is with us every

step of the way, they really do make Medicare easy!

SBHIS es una experimentada y confiable

agencia dentro del espacio de cobertura de

Medicare.

próximos a ingresar.

Club y Claudia enseña español en The Evans School, y

La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

SBHIS Insurance Service.

¿Recomendaría usted a SBHIS?

actualmente?

¡Muy contentos! Es más, cada año, al recibir nueva

información, podemos replantear nuestro plan y SBHIS

WILDCOAST

STOPPING A TSUNAMI OF TRASH AT THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDER

BY SERGE DEDINA, PH.D., CO-FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF WILDCOAST

WILDCOAST at Los Laureles

The 2,293-

acre Tijuana

River

Estuary in

Imperial

Beach is

a Ramsar

Wetland of

International Importance and

a NOAA National Estuarine

Research Reserve. It adjoins the

1,862-acre Tijuana River Mouth

State Marine Conservation Area.

Combined, these coastal

and marine protected areas

provide habitat for more than

300 species of birds, leopard

sharks, bottlenose dolphins,

gray whales and California

spiny lobster. Both areas

provide important recreational,

coastal and economic

resources for communities

on both sides of the border,

especially the commercial and

sport fishing industries.

Before Installing the Trash Boom

38 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2022

Unfortunately, the

health of border

communities

and these fragile

nature reserves

are under threat

from sewage,

plastic debris and

waste tires that

flow from Tijuana

into the U.S.

during sewage

spills and rain

events.

Tijuana’s

unregulated urban

sprawl and limited

trash collection,

especially

in the city’s

steep canyons,

produces a

tsunami of trash

and sediment

that drains into

the Tijuana River

basin, impacts

San Diego,

and eventually

makes its way

to the Pacific

Ocean. Waste

tires and plastic

blanket coastal

ecosystems, clog

sewage collection systems, exacerbate flooding, and are

vectors for mosquito-borne diseases, including yellow

fever and dengue.

In order to stop the plastics and tires from spilling into the

ocean, in January 2021, WILDCOAST, an international

conservation team based in San Diego, installed the first

ever solid waste retention system (trash boom) in Mexico

in Los Laureles Canyon, a tributary stream of the Tijuana

River in Tijuana.

The trash boom has already prevented 72,753 pounds of

solid waste from entering the Tijuana River and the ocean.

Approximately 93% of the waste captured is plastic and

tires. WILDCOAST has employed local residents to sort

the waste, so it can be reused and recycled.

“We never asked

WILDCOAST

for anything

and they have

given us so

much,’ said

Señora Rosario,

a community

leader, who was

visibly emotional

during the park’s

inauguration.

WILDCOAST has

also organized

community

networks to help

collect plastic

and compensate

people for each

kilogram they

bring to recycle,

creating needed

income for the

Los Laureles

community.

On February

14, 2022, Ken

Salazar, the U.S.

Ambassador to

Mexico, toured

the WILDCOAST

trash boom

project in Los

A Tsunami of Trash

Laureles. “One

Ecosystem, Two

Countries” became the theme of this important visit by the

highest-ranking U.S. official in Mexico that turned out to

be a unique show of political will and unity between the

two countries to address the Tijuana River transboundary

water and plastic pollution crisis.

WILDCOAST plans to install two new trash booms in two

other communities in Tijuana whose tributaries also lead

to the sea. These booms will help to prevent thousands of

pounds of plastic debris from reaching the Pacific Ocean.

The innovative efforts of WILDCOAST to halt the tsunami

of trash along the U.S.-Mexico border illustrates how small

actions can have a big impact on protecting our coast and

ocean and endangered ocean wildlife.

REINVESTING FALLEN TREES BACK INTO OUR COMMUNITIES

At San Diego Gas & Electric, our employees feel a strong sense of purpose beyond delivering

clean, safe and reliable energy services to our 3.7 million customers. As part of our commitment

to the communities we serve, we support a variety of initiatives through shareholder charitable

contributions, employee giving programs and volunteerism. Our philanthropic priorities include

climate action, emergency preparedness and safety, economic prosperity, and K-12 STEM

education. Many of our initiatives focus on advancing racial and gender equity

in alignment with our company value to “champion people.” We understand

that in order for our region to thrive and become more sustainable, it is

important for all of us to do our part to ensure no one is left behind.

When you walk

around your

neighborhood, do

you notice how

many trees you

pass? Trees serve

many purposes in

our communities.

They provide shade, food, oxygen, improve

soil and shelter animals, all while making our

communities more beautiful. In an arid climate like

Southern California, there are efforts underway

to increase our tree canopy, recognizing their

important role to reduce and adapt to the effects

of climate change.

It is important for trees to live as long as possible

because mature trees store more carbon. When

a tree’s life cycle is complete, it is environmentally

prudent to have a plan for utilizing their stored

carbon instead of decomposing it back into the

atmosphere. Lumbercycle is a nonprofit sawmill

dedicated to creating a regenerative circular

economy for urban wood. The organization

40 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2022

Urban wood made from local trees

reduces exotic woods imported

from our world’s cherished

rainforests and creates jobs for log

haulers, sawyers, tree companies

and woodworkers. The wood

milled by Lumbercycle is often

used in community enrichment

programs across the region,

including benches in parks and

raised beds in community gardens.

Accessibility and affordability

are deciding factors for whether

community members can use

local, sustainable lumber. By

increasing urban wood’s

affordability, we can increase

accessibility and create

opportunities for personal

and community development

to our most disadvantaged

neighborhoods.

diverts felled trees from landfills, mills and dries them

into usable lumber, then provides the urban wood

to community organizations and local woodworkers.

Additionally, by making sustainable wood products like

lumber, the organization is promoting a more sustainable

urban forest and educating the public about its economic

potential. Lumbercycle ensures that the powerful heattrapping

greenhouse gas, carbon, stays sequestered

inside the tree, instead of released back into the

environment to accelerate the pace of climate change.

With help from generous

partners, Lumbercycle has

been able to donate thousands

of board feet of lumber from

local trees to community

projects including high school

woodshops, church programs,

scouting organizations,

veterans’ groups, community

gardens, public art projects

and many more. In summer

2022, the organization will

continue its program in partnership with San Diego Gas

& Electric which teaches urban forestry to Girl Scouts

at Camp Winacka near Julian. The program features

fun and inclusive discussions about trees, followed

by a sawmill demonstration making lumber for the

camp. Lumbercycle’s outreach and contributions to the

community are made possible by grants and generous

donations. If you would like to support or learn more

about their efforts, you can visit their website at

Episcopal

Community Services

For more than

50 years,

Southwest

Airlines has

been committed to doing the right thing by our People

and protecting our Communities. We take pride in our

reputation as the airline with Heart, and that naturally

extends to a passion for making a difference in our

communities and protecting our resources. We are

proud to partner with local organizations who are

leading with heart and building a bridge to a brighter

future like Episcopal Community Services. Originally

founded in 1927,

the organization

provides social welfare

programs for the

poor, elderly, sick and those who otherwise might

be forgotten. Southwest remains

dedicated to serving in unique ways

that are true to our Mission and that

help those when they need it most.

Kelly Knox

Sr. Community Outreach Manager

Southwest Airlines

Episcopal Community Services

(ECS) serves more than 6,000

clients in the San Diego region,

providing more than $30 million

in health and human services

to help individuals and families

overcome hardship. Through

the organization’s 95-year

tradition of service, ECS has

50 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2022

ECS CEO Elizabeth

Fitzsimons and

Tony Manolatos

made a profound impact,

and the arrival of new CEO

Elizabeth Fitzsimons in 2021

has renewed the organization’s

focus and vision to create an

abundant and equitable society

where all have unlimited

potential.

Through the organization’s new

strategic direction, Fitzsimons,

the Board of Directors, and the

dedicated ECS team continue

to enhance ECS’ existing

programming, while identifying

and breaking down barriers

that limit the community’s

opportunity to thrive. The

organization’s revitalized

mission – to break barriers and

transform communities through

programs rooted in a tradition

of action and faith in God –

speaks to its efforts to build

upon the organization’s deep history

and strengths, while continuing to

advance equity and opportunity across

the region.

“We believe everyone should have

equal access and opportunity to

thrive,” said Fitzsimons. “This means

we need to listen, lean into what we do

best, and build on our capacity to meet the challenges of

our times.”

ECS’ programs have made a difference in the lives of

thousands of children, individuals and families. Its Head

Start program increases access to early childhood

education and development services for more than

2,000 young children. The organization’s bilingual Para

Las Familias program serves 250 preschoolers and

their families, allowing them to receive family counseling

and mental health support. The Central East Regional

Recovery Center provides intensive outpatient substance

use disorder treatment and behavioral health support.

The ACCORD DUI program serves 600

clients in their journey with drug and

alcohol dependence. The organization’s

transitional housing program, Uptown

Safe Haven, provides safe and

reliable housing for adults with mental

health disorders that struggle with

homelessness.

“We value belonging, respect, empowerment, exploration

and stewardship, but, above all, we approach those that

we serve with love,” shared Fitzsimons. “Our partners,

like Southwest Airlines, not only align with our values,

but are committed to taking action in our communities.

These partnerships reiterate the belief that we are stronger

together, and together we can accomplish anything.”

ECS is committed to continuing to adapt to change and

the new demands of society. Under new leadership and

with a reinvigorated mission, vision and values, ECS is an

essential part of the initiatives and conversations that drive

transformational change for generations to come.

Aviation

Schubach Aviation

SAFETY WITHOUT COMPROMISE

As a rapidly increasing number of

travelers turn to private aviation for

their transportation needs, they

benefit not only from the ease,

time savings, and personalized

service of on-demand jet

charter - but also peace of mind

knowing that passenger safety

protocols often go well beyond

those compared to commercial travel. But not all operators

are created equal, there are industry-specific certifications

that set them apart and say quite a lot about their safety

culture. Below Schubach Aviation Co-owner and CEO

Kimberly Herrell details what notable safety credentials and

benchmarks to inquire about when evaluating a jet charter

operator, so you can fly with confidence:

IS-BAO Stage 3

Introduced by the International Business Aviation Council,

IS-BAO is a voluntary international safety endorsement

and the worldwide gold standard for business aviation -

exceeding the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) standard

regulations. A three-stage recommended code of best

practices, the IS-BAO audit is performed by a third-party

reviewers and compares an operator’s safety-related

policies, processes, and procedures. The most advanced

“stage 3” certification is awarded to fewer than 3% of

operators nationwide.

ARGUS Platinum

Developed by Aviation Research Group, the ARGUS rating

is a respected independent, third-party system used

worldwide to grade a charter operators’ safety standards

62 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2022

ARGUS Platinium

vis-à-vis its industry peers. The highest level

“platinum” operator rating is awarded only

to organizations that have proven industry

best practices for their flight operations.

WYVERN Wingman

Established by WYVERN, a leader in aviation

safety risk management and training,

operators belonging to the highly regarded

Wingman safety certification program are

evaluated in all aspects of operations, from

safety records to maintenance. The rigorous

vetting system confirms that their practices

align with professional international industry

standards.

Schubach’s flawless safety record has

allowed it to be certified at the highest levels

and its dedication to absolute reliability has

left nothing to chance — far exceeding the

industry standards. Schubach’s flawless

safety record speaks for itself.

fondos Opportunity for

Impact, donde más de 250

filántropos, líderes de la

comunidad y empresariales

se reunieron para apoyar los

June is PTSD

Awareness Month

PTSD Awareness Month sheds

light on the dark psychological

effects of war and the dogs who

are trained to lead the way out of

that darkness.

William, a US Marine, is driving

his car on an otherwise ordinary

day when a storm approaches

and thunder and lightning strike.

William is pulled back to another

world, another life. He pulls over, covers his head, and

waits for the terror to pass. William is one of over 12

million Americans who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress

Disorder, or PTSD, each year. Fortunately, William is also

a member of Freedom Dogs, a San Diego-based 501(c)(3)

nonprofit organization devoted to improving the lives of

military members suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress

Disorder and other war-related injuries and impairments

through the use of trained service dogs.

Previously referred to as “shell shock,” or “battle

fatigue,” PTSD is a psychiatric disorder common in

people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic

event. According to the American Psychological

Association, people with PTSD suffer intense, disturbing

thoughts and feelings related to their experience. They

may relive the event through flashbacks or nightmares;

they may feel sadness, fear, or anger; and they may

feel detached or estranged from other people. People

with PTSD may avoid situations or people that remind

them of the traumatic event, and they may have strong

negative reactions to something as ordinary as a loud

noise or an accidental touch.

suffer from it do not seek treatment; many

need the guidance of those around them to

recognize the signs and guide them to the

assistance and support they need.

Although PTSD is often associated with military veterans, the terrifying

psychological disorder affects people from all walks of life. In the U.S.

approximately 3.5% of adults are diagnosed with PTSD every year, and

an estimated 1 in 11 people will be diagnosed with PTSD in their lifetime.

Still, PTSD is most prevalent in those who have served in the military. A

2021 study found that among those who served after 9/11, a staggering

75% reported that they had experienced PTSD.

In 2010, The Senate declared June 27 to be National PTSD Awareness

Day, and in 2014, designated the month of June as National PTSD

Awareness Month. Spreading the word about PTSD - what it is, what

the symptoms are, who suffers from PTSD, and what to do about it - is

the most important thing we can do. PTSD is treatable, yet many who

response. With a simple touch of his nose,

William’s Freedom Dog brings him out of

his traumatizing memories and back to

the present. William explains that with that

touch, his dog brings him back into reality.

“You are not over there,” the dog is saying

to him. “You are here. Be with me. Be in this

moment.” William’s Freedom Dog also helps

to break his isolation and reduce stress.

Thanks to William’s Freedom Dog, he is

Elyssa Rosenberg

THE VALUE OF DANCE AS A TOOL FOR CREATIVITY

BY: NICHOLE NAOUM

Art is everywhere.

Whether it comes

alive on a canvas, on

a sidewalk, or on a

stage, we all share

a deep and abiding

appreciation and

understanding of how

art shapes the world

around us.

Elyssa Rosenberg

has a unique passion

for dance that can

be seen, felt and

heard with each

performance. As a

professional dancer

and choreographer,

her goal has always

been to show

audiences the ways

that dance can

transcend barriers

and help unlock a

multitude of emotions

and desires.

Elyssa

Rosenberg

Elyssa’s journey to become the dance educator and

powerhouse she is today began while she was earning

her master’s degree from New York University. While

teaching at Eliot Feld’s Ballet Tech, she saw firsthand how

inequitable access to

arts education truly is.

Elyssa traveled across

New York City to hold

auditions for kids and

was astonished at the

difference between

their local public

school education and

the education they

received at Ballet

Tech.

“What struck me

most was the way

the students who

came to Ballet

Tech grew in selfassurance,

poise and

empathy. A proper

arts education is not

only about developing

artists, but about

fostering confidence,

compassion and

creativity. Those

characteristics stay

with them throughout

their lives, regardless

of what they choose

as a profession.”

Today, Elyssa serves

as the founder

and Artistic and

Executive Director of Seaside Arts Center in Carmel

Valley. She founded Seaside Arts Center because

she saw the need for arts education that focused on

developing the students’ own artistic voices. The nonprofit

organization also partners with local organizations

like the Monarch School to ensure that high quality arts

education is available to all San Diego children despite

their circumstances. “In addition to having a robust

scholarship program at our studio, I oversee a staff of 14

amazing teachers and administrators, develop curricula for

our various departments and programs, and teach several

dance classes at the studio and in the community.”

Elyssa describes herself as a collaborative

leader and consensus builder. She shared

with GB Magazine, “Dance is a brilliantly

collaborative process, involving dancers,

composers, musicians, lights, stage

managers, costume designers, and so much

more. As a choreographer, you quickly learn

that with all those collaborators, it is unlikely

that you will achieve exactly what you

envisioned at the start.” But what she has

learned over the years as a choreographer

was that if she surrendered to the process

and allowed each collaborator to do what

they do best, the product will be so much

better than she initially envisioned.

“The best part of my job is seeing children

gain confidence through self-expression.

One of our goals is to help kids listen to

their inner voice and feel comfortable with

themselves in any situation, especially when

they are uncertain. When I see children who

walked into the studio insecure, intimidated,

and unsure, go on to perform (often their

own choreography) with assurance and

conviction, I know we have succeeded.”
