Building

A More

Resilient

World

The Salk Institute’s Campaign for the

Future: Building a More Resilient World

is a bold, five-year, $500 million scientific and

philanthropic effort to attract the people and

acquire the technology and space necessary to

expand and accelerate critical research.

At the center of this audacious goal is the plan to build the

100,000-square-foot Joan and Irwin Jacobs Science and

Technology Center.

Why Now?

Scientific research is now at an inflection

point, driven by advances in technology and

computational science. For the Institute, these

advances have opened thrilling new avenues

of discovery. To seize this opportunity, Salk

must make a significant investment in people,

technology and space.

People

The Campaign will raise funds to recruit

and retain talented faculty and staff in

diverse disciplines.

Technology

The new Jacobs Center will improve

collaboration between biologists, engineers

and computational experts, better enabling

them to develop the tools and latest

technologies needed to keep Salk’s research

ahead of the curve.

Join Us

Joan and Irwin Jacobs, longtime supporters of

the Salk Institute, will contribute $1 for every

$2 donated—up to $100 million, which would

translate to a total of $300 million with matching

funds—for gifts or pledges made to the campaign

between now and September 30, 2022.

Science is a collaborative pursuit, and we invite

you to join us in building a healthier, more

resilient world:

www.salk.edu/resilient

Space

The Jacobs Center will provide critical

research, lab and administrative space

to advance and expand Salk’s scientific

mission.

THE VISION:

A WORLD WITHOUT

ALZHEIMER’S

A

lzheimer’s disease

has become one of

the costliest medical

conditions in America

due to the need for

long-term care for

those stricken, yet

the dollars devoted

to research for a

what is needed. As

our population ages

disease in one way or another, either as a person with

dementia, or caregiver, or loved one concerned with the

well-being of someone afflicted.

8 Decades of Changing

Lives in San Diego

The Spinners

For 80 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of

Greater San Diego (BGCGSD) has been

dedicated to creating a safe space for

youth to learn, grow and harness the

greatness they hold within. Through

various programs, children ages 5-18 are

inspired to lead healthy lifestyles, succeed

academically and develop positive

character. These values are instilled in youth throughout

19 community-based sites across San Diego County.

The organization invites you to Change Lives through

their signature fundraising event, An Evening of Changing

Lives. This special night brings together 700 Club donors

and community members who provide crucial support.

Their generous donations go directly toward programs

and resources like cooking classes, STEM projects, and

physical activities, allowing BGCGSD to impact over 8,000

youth positively.

An Evening of Changing Lives will occur on Saturday,

September 10th, 2022, at the beautiful Marriott Marquis

San Diego Marina Grand Ballroom. A silent and live

auction will take place, featuring spectacular items like a

classic 1960 Corvette and a private villa for 8 guests in

Cabo San Lucas! Registered guests can bid on once-in-alifetime

items in the silent auction up to two weeks before

the event. The purchase of a ticket includes cocktails,

a three-course dinner, and a live performance by the

six-time Grammy-nominated vocal group, The Spinners.

For over 400 students and their families, St.

Madeleine Sophie’s Center’s day program is a

unique opportunity where adults with intellectual

and developmental disabilities can come to

explore their talents and continue to grow for a

lifetime.

For over 50 years the Center has provided this

“Life Program” that allows students to learn and

grow, receive work training, and enjoy

friendships and social activities throughout their

lives. Students come to SMSC’s almost seven-acre

campus in El Cajon, California daily to learn or

upgrade marketable skills, develop creative

outlets, earn an income, make new friends, and

gain a sense of independence and self-esteem.

This “Life Program” includes high school

graduates to seniors in their eighties.

Each year, St. Madeleine

Sophie’s Center must

raise funds for the

programs and services

we provide for over four

hundred students

attending SMSC. Due to

additional costs, we are

incurring to comply with

Covid-19 Guideline and

reinventing our business einventing model, our SMSC has an

estimated expense of $100,000 in addition to the

yearly program deficit of $1,800,000, which

equals a cost shortage of $4,800 per year for

each student.

It takes a vast amount of resources to be able to

provide the full spectrum of programs and

possibilities. Through annual events, St.

Madeleine Sophie’s Center hopes to not only

raise funds to continue to provide these

opportunities but to also expand their

communitypro

community of supporters, build resources for

their future, and continue to raise awareness for

adults with intellectual and developmental

disabilities.

It is with all of these goals in mind that they host

their 44th Haute with Heart Fashion Show &

Luncheon: Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.

This event will be held at the Hilton San Diego

Bayfront (Downtown) on Saturday, August 13,

2022 and produced by Kristi Brooks. The event

will feature SMSC students and professional

models dressed in the latest fashions along with

boutique shopping, live and silent auctions, and

opportunity drawings.

“Our son, Aidan, has

been attending St.

Madeleine Sophie’s

Center in El Cajon for

many years. One of

the things he loves

most about the

campus environment

is its Olympic-size pool

area, where he has

been swimming since

he was a young boy.

Aidan is a proud

of the many wonderful experiences supporting

his development into a young adult. His growth

has a lot to do with the people who work at St.

fellow students whose lives are impacted every

day.” - Mark Grant

It is my honor to welcome you to

the 44th Haute with Heart Fashion

tribute to the students at St.

Madeleine Sophie’s Center.

Our event will be held on August 13th at the beautiful Hilton San Diego

Bayfront from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. It will feature beautiful fashions,

performances by our students, and a delicious luncheon. We will also have a

variety of silent auction items, live auctions, opportunity drawings, and

fabulous boutique shopping.

Our granddaughter, Jillian, is on the swim team. The adaptive swim team at St.

Madeleine Sophie’s Aquatic Center has been a fantastic personal outlet for our

Jillian. Coach Kim Holt and her staff have developed a nurturing and teamspirited

culture that emphasizes personal growth and attainable physical

goals. Jillian has met a number of great friends during her twelve years as a

member of the Tritons. She enjoys the social gatherings at the pool and is a

thrill to watch at the swim meets. The hard work in the pool has certainly

enhanced her confidence as a swimmer and growth as a young woman.

Your support improves the quality of life for our students. Because of you, our

students are learning culinary skills, computers, photography, and gardening,

just to mention a few of the opportunities available at St. Madeleine Sophie’s

Epilepsy Foundation

Jake Anaya, John Pugh, Chris Blades and

Meet Sarah Anaya, one of the Epilepsy Foundation of San

Diego County’s (EFSDC’s) strongest advocates! For more than

twenty-three years, Sarah has actively supported EFSDC.

Sarah, together with her son Jake and husband Scott Hilkene

are tireless in their efforts to help those living with epilepsy.

Sarah shares her journey with GB Magazine: “Our son Jake

was diagnosed with Epilepsy in 1997. Jake just turned 26

which means that Jake has dealt with Epilepsy for over a

quarter of a century. We cannot help but sit back and think

about the impact those seizures and medications have had on his life and his brain. Yet he

is an amazing young man who has and continues to overcome many hurdles. We struggle

daily with the effects of both his seizures and the side effects of his medications and

finding the right balance, while we search for answers. We take it one day at a time. Jake

lives in the moment and always has a great attitude and such a positive outlook; his pure

determination and resilience to live his best life is inspiring!”

Minnie Rzeslawski

MAKING THE AMERICAN DREAM OF HOMEOWNERSHIP A REALITY

BY: NICHOLE NAOUM

Bianca Rzeslawski and

her daughter Minnie

Despite the ever-accelerating

advancements of technology, the

process of home-buying is still much

more than clicking a button and

signing on the dotted line. The reality

is that most critical life decisions will

always involve people working with

one another. For Minnie Rzeslawski,

a career in real estate is one that lends itself to serving

others and helping them achieve the American dream.

Minnie and her husband began investing in homes -

purchasing, remodeling, and selling them for a profit - in

the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. “I was 25 years

old when I had my first child, received my real estate

license, and started doing loans when interest rates were

12-14 percent,” says Minnie.

After finding success selling homes on her own, Minnie

decided to launch 24K International Realty in 1988 and has

not looked back since. Over the years, she has become

an active member in numerous professional organizations

including The National Association of Realtors (NAR), The

National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals

(NAHREP), The California Association of Realtors (CAR),

and The Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors (PSAR).

After 10 years of being a RE/MAX franchisee, Minnie

recently joined COMPASS as the 24K Real Estate Group.

She shares with GB Magazine, “I have been 24K since

1988 and loved working with RE/MAX but I decided

to partner with COMPASS due to their extraordinary

technology. It is the first modern real estate platform,

pairing the industry’s top talent with technology to make

the search and sell experience smooth and seamless.”

38 GBSAN.COM | JULY 2022

And when it comes to her leadership style, Minnie says it

comes down to four things: great communications skills,

sharing the decision-making process with your team, being

knowledgeable in your field, and understanding when

to evolve with the times. “Open lines of communication

are vital - this can spell

the difference between

success and failure,”

she says. “Sharing

decision-making tasks

with your team helps fuel

cultivate their creativity

and productivity. Being a

leader means you have

– or should have – more

knowledge than those you

lead,” she adds. However,

Minnie also notes that

it is important to also

acknowledge those team

members that bring their

own expertise to the table.

Learning to evolve in these changing times is crucial, as

a leader needs to be a visionary who can learn to adapt

quickly to change while also assuring growth.

Minnie’s leadership style is the product of the various

standards her parents instilled in her, and her own ethics

she has developed over the years. “I lead according to

what feels right and natural. I really don’t like to boss

anyone around especially, when my team of 10 realtors

are all independent

contractors. However,

I do have a set code

of ethics and a style

that my agents need to

follow in order to stay

the course with 24K. We

are definitely family,” she

shares.

Bianca and Minnie

Rzeslawski

Real estate tends

to be a 24/7 type of

environment, especially

as a team leader and

business owner. Minnie

does make time,

however, to decompress,

enjoy a nice dinner with family and friends, and travel. She

adds, “For me, there’s nothing more relaxing than playing

my favorite music, having a glass of wine, and cooking

recipes from my mother or online chefs.”

For the Freedoms

that we all enjoy...

Our Thanks go to the

young men and women

serving in all

branches of the military.

We Salute You!

Health

Miracle Babies

MY BRAIN AND MY BABY

Miracle Babies has always had a keen awareness of the importance of the bond of

parents to their newborn child, particularly when a medical crisis such as a NICU

admission shifts the ability of parents to be with their baby in the way everyone

pictures postpartum. Miracle Babies continues to have success in reuniting families

with their hospitalized infants through their transportation program, providing

support to NICU moms through care packages and Miracle Hours.

Miracle Babies founder, Dr. Daneshmand, has been a firm believer in the importance

of caring for the whole person with emphasis on mental health. When mental health

is not addressed, this is a huge hamper to anyone’s ability to cope with daily life, let

alone the increased crisis that may be occurring during pregnancy or postpartum.

40 GBSAN.COM | JULY 2022

Over the years,

people have

become more

familiar with

terms like

postpartum

depression.

Yet, the term

postpartum

depression

can lead you

to believe that

you only must

look out for

depression

after you

have a baby.

Miracle Babies

Unfortunately,

that leaves out

how you can

have anxiety, PTSD, OCD (and

more) and those symptoms

can start during pregnancy.

Maternal mental health (MMH)

is the umbrella term for all

mental health conditions during

the time of conception up until

the first year postpartum. This

is not to say mental health is

not important before and after

that time for a family, however,

research indicates that

women are more likely

to experience mental

health conditions related

to having a child during

that specific time period.

In fact, it is estimated

that 1 in 5 women will

experience a MMH

condition annually in the

US, which is upwards

of 800,000 women

a year. During the

pandemic, preliminary

research showed

that MMH conditions

increased threefold. There is mounting evidence in

fields of epigenetic research that indicates that maternal

mental health both during pregnancy and postpartum

can significantly affect the developmental trajectory of

the child. Miracle

Babies has

always aimed

to give the best

possible start for

each baby and

family, and mental

health can no

longer be outside

of the equation.

Miracle Babies

is proud to be

able to launch

My Brain and My

Baby, a maternal

mental health

initiative. Their

aim is to shift

maternal

mental health

to a basic

need, so that it

is screened for

and addressed

in the same

way as food,

shelter and

water. MMH

is the most

Miracle Babies Booth common

complication

of pregnancy

and childbirth, and deserves to have

a much higher focus, as it is more

common than gestational diabetes

and preeclampsia combined. Miracle

Babies will provide free individual

and group therapy for any mother

regardless of type of insurance. The

program will be piloted with Scripps

Perinatology to work on prevention

with early detection and intervention.

Miracle Babies tagline is “Together

for a better beginning” which rings

NICU Care Packages

true for their maternal mental health

initiative in that they want mothers

and all caregivers to be together with their baby not just

physically, but emotionally as well.

MANA de San Diego

Southwest

Airlines is

committed to

making our

communities stronger. We believe that our people are

our most powerful fuel, and we continue to find ways

to make a difference in the lives of those living in the

cities we serve. MANA de San Diego believes in a

future where all young people succeed, empowering

Latinas through education, development, community

service and advocacy. That is why Southwest Airlines

is proud to provide the means for Latina professionals

to travel to conferences

that will develop their

leadership skills. The

key to their success

has been the sisterhood that provides support and

encouragement for all Latinas of all

ages, at all levels of their careers.

Kelly Knox

Southwest Airlines

MANA de San Diego (MANASD)

empowers Latinas at every stage

of their lives, starting in seventh

grade to retirement. For over

twenty years, Southwest Airlines

has been a long-time community

partner. The Hermanitas (little

sisters) Program starts in seventh

grade and is a one-on-one

mentorship program that focuses

on high school completion,

career exploration, leadership

development and community

service. The Program has a 90%

retention rate and 100% high

school completion rate. Once the high school students enroll in college, the Tias

(aunts) volunteers step in. The goal of Tias is to provide student support for them

to persist to graduation, 93% of their college students continue to graduation, and

80% of their college students complete their degree or certificate program within

six years. Throughout the years, Southwest Airlines has flown Hermanitas and

their chaperones to visit potential colleges and flown college students who are

studying away back home to visit their families. MANASD’s program participants

have been able to attend conferences throughout the nation thanks to the

Southwest Airlines’ Heart.

Grecia Jimenez is an Hermanitas alumna, Tias program

participant, and scholarship recipient. In June, Grecia

graduated cum laude from UC Riverside with a Bachelor

of Arts in Public Policy. She finished her B.A. in three years,

thanks to the college credits she earned in high school.

Grecia shares the following on her experience with MANASD:

a short introduction about myself to Latinas in the law. I

was offered so many interviews! I had an interview with

Mara Elliot, the first woman and first Latina City Attorney

of San Diego. Norma Jasso, a MANASD volunteer, helped

me prepare for the interviews. Last summer, I was an

administrative intern at the City Attorney’s office. I was

also a legal

intern with

Kuyateh Law

Group. I have

been working

with them since

June, 2021. I

have learned

so much from

being part of

MANA de San Diego

I am grateful to have been

part of the Hermanitas

program, the college edition

program, and a scholarship

recipient. I received a

MANASD scholarship during

my three years in college.

With my first MANASD

scholarship, I

purchased the

laptop I used

daily for classes.

Without a laptop,

navigating

college

would have

been almost

impossible.

COVID-19

brought

additional mental

and physical

challenges,

but I persisted.

As an aspiring lawyer, MANA de San Diego connected

me to one of its members Marissa Bejarano, who was

working as a San Diego District Attorney. Judge Bejarano

is so impressive, she spoke to me on the phone, giving

me the guidance I needed as a first-generation college

student. Judge Bejarano shared her experience with

me and offered motivation and tips on the law school

application process. I struggled to find an internship due

to the pandemic. Judge Bejarano sent my resume with

programs. Being

in the Hermanitas

program for most of

high school taught me

an incredible amount

about confidence,

teamwork and

leadership skills. One

day, I hope to be a

great mentor like the

mentors I had.

In addition to the Hermanitas and Tias program,

MANASD awards scholarships to Latinas pursuing higher

education. MANASD’s vision is to have more Latinas in

leadership positions in San Diego. Their Latina Success

Leadership Program (LSLP), a partnership with the

Center for Creative Leadership Institute, has graduated

over 300 Latinas and prepared them for next steps in

their career and leadership journey.

as it raises funds allowing the Museum to make an impact

within the Museum walls and in the broader community.

All proceeds from the event benefit MCASD’s dynamic

exhibition schedule and education programs that foster

conversations and connect visitors to contemporary

art. Community members can look forward to special

programs such as:

Free Third Thursday - The Museum is open late on the

Third Thursday of each month and invites the community

Education

Encountering

Excellence at OLP

Dr. Lauren Lek at

Commencement 2022

Back in 2018, Dr. Lauren Lek, Head of

School for the Academy of Our Lady of

Peace (OLP) was a featured contributor

for the Times of San Diego. The article

focus was, “Classrooms of the Future.”

Of course, this piece was prior to the

Covid-19 pandemic, yet the foretelling

by Dr. Lek from that article gives one

pause as the relevance resounds in its applicability four

years later, “Today, education is as challenged as it has

ever been to prepare students for a rapidly changing,

globally competitive world. The jobs of the future are

shifting at the same rate of change as all other things,

and the speed of change only seems to be increasing.”

Referring back of course illuminates the dynamic and

visionary leadership of Dr. Lek’s headship, while also

shining a light into the level of excellence infused into

planning and processing of all areas of academia for this

oldest (and only) comprehensive all girls’ high school in

San Diego.

58 GBSAN.COM | JULY 2022

The graduating class of 2022 embody the call to

excellence as their fine-tuned individual and collective

accolades speak volumes of the investment each

student receives during their four-year academic journey

at OLP. At OLP the intentionality of their commitment

to excellence is intricately connected to the holistic

support of each girl. Nothing demonstrates this more

than this class of 2022 having received over 1,100 offers

of admission to college with 80% of students receiving

merit-based scholarships at a collective total greater than

$25.1 Million. This phenomenal group of girls has seen

40% of their peers pursuing STEM majors and 19% firstgeneration

to attend college.

Excellence, by no means, is a striving toward

perfectionism. The OLP community empowers curious

learning and provides each student opportunities to

achieve, grow and rise to unexpected heights.

school, please visit: www.aolp.org – the OLP community

parece aumentar día a día”.

universidad.

La excelencia, no implica el

perfeccionismo. La comunidad

de OLP promueve el aprendizaje

Life

San Diego Blood Bank

PRECISION BLOOD IS AT THE HEART OF ITS MISSION

Kamila receives

a transfusion

San Diego Blood Bank’s vision is to

have an even greater impact on our

community’s health through precision

medicine, an innovative, patientcentric

health approach - bringing

greater precision to transfusion

medicine through a targeted DNA

sequencing analysis of blood type

in both blood donors and blood

recipients. This precision matching

of blood type allows physicians to identify the best

transfusion products more accurately for their patients,

resulting in fewer complications, immune reactions and

better patient outcomes. Providing blood products via

this patient-centric approach will usher in a new era of

precision transfusion medicine.

Transfusion patients in greatest need include cancer patients

undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, organ and bone

marrow transplant patients, and patients with blood disorders

(like sickle cell disease or thalassemia) or other conditions

requiring frequent transfusions throughout their life.

As an example of the benefits, one current patient has

alpha thalassemia major, a severe and life-threatening

blood disorder causing hydrops around vital organs. She

also has liver damage of unknown etiology and no longer

68 GBSAN.COM | JULY 2022

qualifies for a bone marrow transplant (the only cure for

alpha thalassemia). She will continue to need transfusions

for life and currently receives them at Kaiser San Diego

every 3 weeks.

“Kaiser-Permanente is very

pleased with San Diego

Blood Bank’s Precision Blood

Program and sees much

benefit to our patients in the

expansion of Precision Blood

practices - providing them the

most compatible blood. Since

the start of Precision Blood

have been tested and received

genotype compatible blood. The

main use of genotyping is in our

Heme-Onc patients, pediatric

patients with thalassemia

disease, and

those with multiple

alloantibodies.

Due to this

technology at San

blood . There is

tremendous return

in the reduction in

morbidity and mortality over the patient’s life span,” Majid

Ghassemi, MD, Chief of Service, Pathology, Medical

Director of Laboratories, Kaiser-Permanente shared with

GB Magazine.

“Through next-generation sequencing, identifying rare

donors, and supporting our hospital-based transfusion

services, we expect to attract national and international

interest in our state-of-the-art Immunohematology

Reference Laboratory services

- transforming the field of

transfusion medicine while

further establishing San Diego

Children

Summers at

Father Joe’s Villages

For many children, summer is an

exciting time. The possibility of fun

and adventure, the freedom from

school responsibilities, and the

long, warm days make the summer

months extra special. Unfortunately,

not all children have access to the

summer activities that make the

season so special. While their peers

are busy making summer memories

of family vacations, lazy days at the

pool, campfires and the great outdoors, children living

with the realities of homelessness likely will not have

these stories to share when they return to school.

That is why, each summer the Therapeutic Childcare

team at Father Joe’s Villages brings hope and normalcy

into the lives of children in need through the program’s

annual Summer Camps. During the summer months,

the Therapeutic Childcare program transforms into

an engaging and fun Summer Camp for children of

all ages staying in Father Joe’s Villages’ shelters and

housing programs. Through educational and fun summer

activities including safe trips into the community, art and

Additionally, Summer Camp helps children thrive in school,

even during the summer. The “summer slide” is the term

experts use for the learning lost during summer vacation.

The Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), a national

testing organization, reported that the average student

in grades 3-8 scored 5-10 percentile points lower than

students who took math assessments the year previous.

At Summer Camp, children engage in educational events

and activities that allow them to grow and learn in a fun,

Biodiversity

The Nat Makes

Conservation Possible

The red-legged frog eggs were translocated to two

protected locations in San Diego and Riverside Counties.

The San Diego Natural History

Museum (The Nat) has been studying

the ecosystems of San Diego

County and Baja California for over

100 years. Their goal? To ensure

this corner of the continent remains

healthy and enjoyable - for many

species - long into the future. You

could say their research is what makes conservation

possible. One recent success story is the return of

California red-legged frogs to San Diego County.

The California State Amphibian once ranged from northern

California down into Baja California. Red-legged frogs

thrived in mountainous ponds until they made it onto

the menus of gold miners in the 1800s, and displaced

by invasive bullfrogs in the 1900s. Other exotic species,

fungal disease, drought and habitat destruction continued

to eat away at their populations. By 1970, the California

red-legged frog was extinct in San Diego County.

But in the Sierra San Pedro Mártir, just a few hours south

of the border, these frogs were hanging on. Yet only 10

84 GBSAN.COM | JULY 2022

populations remained on the peninsula, all with fewer

than 50 adults. In 2018, The Nat teamed up with Mexican

conservation organization Fauna del Noroeste (FAUNO) to

build new ponds for the frogs.

Once they had settled into their new, more resilient

habitat, the time came to reintroduce them to southern

California. In 2020, the team partnered with organizations

and government agencies on both sides of the border to

translocate freshly laid eggs from Baja to ponds in San

Diego and Riverside Counties.

The first-ever translocation mission happened in March

2020. Hundreds of frog eggs stored in a cooler were

helicoptered out of the mountains, driven across the

border to their new homes on protected land, and

released.

Spring 2022 marked the third round of translocation

missions, and each year has been more successful than

the last. The next milestone will come when the relocated

frogs mature and begin to breed on their own. To learn

more about The Nat’s research and conservation work,

37 YEARS OF SERVICE AND ADVOCACY FOR RURAL HEALTH

Judith

Shaplin is

resident of

rural East

San Diego

County

and has

worked at

Mountain

Health

since

1985 serving as its

CEO until April 2020

when Mountain

Health merged

with San Ysidro

Health (SYHealth).

Today, she is the

Vice President of

Social Resources

Judi Shaplin, VP of Social

Resources & Rural Health

and Rural Services working with SYHealth Leadership to

expand services to the under-resourced populations in

both rural and urban communities of San Diego County.

During Judi’s tenure at Mountain Health, she dramatically

expanded healthcare, behavioral health services and

dental healthcare, as well as access to these resources in

both rural and urban communities, with an emphasis on

providing services to culturally and linguistically diverse

populations. Judi announced her decision to retire after

37 years of care and service earlier this year and SYHealth

is hosting a Celebration of Rural Health Luncheon

& Benefit on July 7th at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront

in her honor to

celebrate her career

and raise critical

funds for nutrition

services for seniors

and their families.

The obstacles

faced by patients

and providers in

rural communities

are vastly different

than those in

urban San Diego

County. Economic

factors, cultural and

social differences,

limited education

opportunities and

the sheer isolation

of living in remote

areas all conspire to create health care disparities and

impede rural neighbors in their struggle to lead healthy lives.

To this point, SYHealth Mountain Health Community

Center Senior Nutrition Program headquartered at the

Mountain Health Community Center (MHCC) in Campo

serves seniors who reside in the Mountain Empire subregion

of East San Diego County. This sub-region covers

950 square miles with 7,500 residents in the southeastern

portion of the County and is comprised of several rural

backcountry communities.

The MHCC Senior Nutrition Program provides congregate

meals. Anyone

age 60+ is

eligible to

participate in

the congregate

meals, which

are served at

MHCC and at

various libraries

and community

centers

throughout

the Mountain

Empire subregion.

Over

the last two

years, eligibility

SYHealth Mountain Health Family

Medicine in Campo, California

for home-delivered meals has been expanded to include any

senior age 60+, in order to accommodate those who wish

to avoid public settings to reduce COVID-19

exposure. Ultimately, the need and demand for

home delivered meals has increased and the

program is in dire need of sturdy 4x4 vehicles

that can handle the rough terrain to deliver

these meals.

Unfortunately access to affordable food/fresh

produce is a significant barrier for seniors in this

region. There is no large grocery store in the

mountains, and it is a 40 to 65 mile drive one

way to access food. For many local seniors, with

incomes below $600/month, the MHCC meals

are their primary food source.

The Celebration of Rural Health Luncheon &

Benefit not only honors the efforts of a dedicated

advocate and supporter, it also benefits the

senior nutrition program by funding hybrid 4x4

vehicles desperately needed to deliver meals

throughout the region. SYHealth invites you to

join us and give in any capacity: as an advocate,

volunteer by donating your time and skills, or

by giving to help meet the needs of vulnerable

seniors and families in rural communities. For

Options For All Team Launches Website

Designed by Program Consumers

There’s something extraordinary about

the photos and videos on the new

Options For All website.

Launched May 17, 2022, the brand-new optionsforall.org

features vivid images of actual participants in its programs –

not stock art.

Not only that, all of the photos and videos were captured by

a team of video professionals with intellectual and developmental

disabilities (I/DD).

These are the storytellers

for our organization, and we

looked to them to provide the most

authentic representation of the

individuals in our programs”

Ken Barnes, President & CEO

Founded in 1985, OFA serves more than 1,500 consumers

across California with innovative programs in the greater

San Diego, Inland Empire, and Silicon Valley areas.

The website relaunch is just one of the many accomplishments

by OFA this past year. According to the annual report,

others include achieving a near-perfect service delivery

rate, investing in information technology, and dramatically

reducing staff turnover.

Locally, OFA is investing in senior programs. At the state

level, OFA’s legislative advocacy achieved a groundbreaking

win for persons with disabilities banning sub-minimum

wages for persons in the I/DD community.

“We believe in unlimited possibilities, and with the continuing

support of our community and our terrific staff, we can

continue to create hope, inspire dreams, and achieve success

in the lives of the people we serve,” Barnes said.

A Rich Information Source

“When we decided to to overhaul our website, we really

wanted to to represent the community that we serve,” Barnes

said. “We took a competent team of of video professionals

with I/DD and facilitated moments where they could gather

images and video.”

The result is is breathtaking –– photos and videos that exude

energy, action, and joy.

The website has been transformed into a hub for those

with I/DD seeking services, as well as employers, service

providers, and others seeking to to learn more. For example,

it it includes a knowledge base with a glossary of of terms and

a list of of commonly used acronyms in in the I/DD community.

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires websites to to

be accessible. OFA’s website includes a widget that aims to to

make it it easier for disabled viewers –– such as someone with

colorblindness or or dyslexia –– to to access the content. The site

can be adjusted for contrast, spacing, and text size.

Strengthening Core Operations

Along with the new website, during the past year, OFA

focused on strengthening its internal operations in in multiple

ways, including updating servers launching an intranet, and

transitioning to to cloud-based platforms.

Two years ago, OFA served approximately 84% of of those

eligible for service. Relying on data-driven metrics, the

leadership team restructured the referral and scheduling

processes, and implemented a program-based, rather than

geographical, staffing model. OFA’s service providers can

now serve 99% or or an additional 200 families per month.

OFA also improved staff turnover rates, which have been

as as high as as 105% per year. Now, turnover is is less than 20%.

Improving Lives

OFA is is transforming lives throughout the I/DD community

through advocacy and innovation.

In In addition to to no longer supporting employers who pay our

participants less than the minimum wage, Barnes worked

to to pass California Senate Bill 639, which bans the payment

of of sub-minimum wages –– as as little as as $2 per hour –– for

persons with disabilities.

OFA also launched an innovative partnership with Drexel

University to to design a new program for seniors with ID/D.

OFA’s efforts have been recognized locally and nationally.

Recently, the organization received the Adam Heavner

Award for Business of of the Year from the Autism Society of of

America and was named the 2020 San Diego Pride Partner

of of the Year.

Enhanced Behavioral Support Services

Help Participants Adjust to Social Situations

Individuals Who Struggle in Group Settings Receive

One-on-One Support for Outings.

“This program adds more steps and

support to help individuals increase

their ability to participate in the

community,” said Myles Horttor, Vice

President of Programs. “This goes to

the heart of what we do as an organization.

Instead of shutting people out

of an experience, we find a way to

acclimate and include them.”

OFA’s program grew by 33%

over the last year and currently

serves 40 individuals.

Venables was matched with Sean Taylor,

Area Manager for the program. Taylor

coached him in a one-on-one setting. “We

learned that schedule is key. It’s important

that any changes are communicated with

him ahead of time, so he feels comfortable

with what is coming,” Taylor said.

Patrick Venables takes great pride in his volunteer work

at the Linda Vista Library. Twice a week, he spends hours

wiping down keyboards and straightening books and

magazines – performing each task to his high standards.

“I enjoy cleaning books, and I get the library clean,” he said.

In the past, volunteering wasn’t an option for Venables, 32,

who has I/DD. He struggled with changing a routine or with

people entering his personal space. Both of these situations

caused him immense stress, leading to negative behaviors.

With persistence, Venables met his goal of “graduating” to

a group setting with a ratio of three individuals per staff

member. A future goal is to secure a paying, part-time job.

“Patrick is very independent and capable and has made

enormous improvements – including learning to be much

more flexible and going along with changes,” Taylor said.

Many adults with I/DD have difficulty in group settings.

Perhaps they struggle to use a lower voice indoors, have

impulses to touch or throw items or become overstimulated

in noisy environments. Such adults need extra

support or risk being excluded from social settings,

training, and employment opportunities.

Considering these more vulnerable individuals, OFA decided

to expand its Enhanced Behavioral Support Services, a

unique program to re-integrate these individuals into the

community. Staff is assigned to participants in a 1:1 or 1:2

ratio and receive special training to address behaviors.

‘Bow Ties & Sandals’ Gala to Benefit

Film and Media Program

”When we decided to overhaul our website, we really

wanted to represent the community that we serve,”

Barnes said. “We took a competent team of video

professionals with I/DD and facilitated moments

where they could gather images and video.”

Options For All’s third annual fundraising event will

take place at the “magic hour” – a time when the sun

has disappeared but still illuminates the sky. It’s when

the light softens, shadows disappear, and everyone

is beautiful.

The magic hour is a metaphor for a more inclusive

and accepting society. It is also the best time of day

for videography. Fittingly, the gala will benefit OFA’s

highly successful Film and Media Program. Launched

in 2017, the program has grown to employ a team of

production assistants with I/DD who went through

the program, resulting in its participants finding

employment in the field.

Graduates of the OFA program have found industry

jobs, including content producers for OFA and other

nonprofit organizations. Recently, the OFA team

produced a documentary film for The Mesa Rim

Academy, a nonprofit that helps people of all abilities

enjoy climbing. The film has been accepted to the

International Film Festival in San Diego – showing the

caliber and quality of the team’s training.

Last year’s gala raised over $250,000 for seniors with

I/DD, and the goal is to exceed that target, said

Vincenzo Tarantino, OFA’s Director of Marketing

and Communications. This year’s proceeds will help

upgrade the film studios and productions to meet

ever-evolving industry standards.

“Through the unique perspective and experience of

people with I/DD, we’re breaking down barriers for

this community and providing them with a platform

for their voice,” Tarantino said. “Through this medium,

they can share their perspective of how they see the

world and the community.”
