Specialist in Artificial Grass, Contemporary Gardens,

Timber Decking, Composite Decking, Driveways,

Porcelain Paving and all types of Landscaping

We are are an experienced team of 8 landscapers with most of our

guys having 20 plus years in the trade.

I started myself at the age of 13 in the landscape industry working

weekends for a local garden centre, and then progressed over the

years. I’ve spent the last ten years running a team of 15 but now

we’ve downsized so we can specialise more in the design and

build element and being able to be more focused on fewer builds.

We have built gardens for Chelsea gold winners, installed in the

grounds of Chatsworth, worked all over the country building sensory

gardens, and we pride ourselves on quality and passion and

thinking out of the box!

For a complete design and build package don’t

hesitate to contact us we have a great customer base

and fantastic portfolio.

DOORSTEPPA

MAGAZINES

Welcome to the January 2025 edition of The

Eckington and Killamarsh Doorsteppa.

As we step into 2025, we’re filled with excitement

and anticipation for what the new year will bring

to our community. The beginning of a new year is

a time for fresh starts, reflection, and the shared

hope of growth and unity.

In this edition, we focus on a special group that

was founded by Jo-Anne Oldfield in memory of

her son, Mac. They hold coffee mornings on the

second Monday every month for parents to come

together and share their experience of loss, and

their strategies for coping. Turn to our Charity

section on page 14 for all the information.

We also take a look back at the passing of Sir

Winston Churchill which occurred on the 24th

January back in 1965. The details can be found in

our History section on page 32.

Let 2025 be a year of understanding and

progress. Here’s to a bright and hopeful year

ahead.

Happy New Year from all of us to you!

Tarotscopes

ARIES 21 March - 20 April

Rely on your natural intuition. If something doesn’t feel right; then it

isn’t. Your instincts are there to guide you; use them. Something leaves

you feeling tired and drained; for now persevere as the conclusion to

this chapter isn’t too far ahead. Give thought to, and prepare for, your

future. Capitalise on previous efforts made and plan to ensure you

have sufficient to be comfortable moving forward. Without being wholly

selfish; it’s you that’s important. Thought for 2025: Believe in your

dreams and have faith in positive outcomes.

TAURUS 21 April - 21 May

Potentially you’ve hit a glitch or two. Stay calm and carry on; this is not

meant to derail you and you can be assured that you will come through

this period; possibly older and wiser, but nevertheless, unscathed. Put

all emotion aside and rely purely on your head using logical, orderly,

clear water, thinking. Someone spiritually gifted lends a listening ear,

offers sound advice, and a good support system. They help you find

your equilibrium. Thought for 2025: Being purposeful and

energetic in your endeavours allows for success.

CANCER 22 June - 23 July

Feeling a bit isolated and alone? Being in the depths of winter this is

quite normal so don’t take anything personally. Instead allow yourself

time to review your world and give thought to how you’d like it to

evolve. Viewing situations from all angles give a better overview and,

of course, there’ll be things in the pipeline you’re not aware of as yet.

Be patient; life soon picks up speed with plenty to occupy you.

Thought for 2025: Have a goal in sight and work steadily

towards it.

LEO 24 July - 23 August

Time to raise a glass with friends and family alike! Just don’t get too

carried away though as an old argument resurfaces. This time you

really have to take charge and get things under control. This constant

going round in circles does no one any good whatsoever; least of all

you. Again, there’s the chance you’re being led up the garden path. If

something isn’t sitting quite right with you then listen to your instincts.

Thought for 2025: Whilst a little competition is healthy keep it

light hearted.

VIRGO 24 August - 23 September

The worst of the storm is behind you and, whilst nothing remains as it

was, you’re starting to be able to plot your future course with

confidence. There’s still the chance of the rug being pulled out from

under your feet in one scenario but it’s nothing to fear as what comes

next puts you in a much stronger position all round. Finances are

looking good and you’re able to help others on their journey. Thought

for 2025: Consider, carefully, all options opening up before

making any decisions.

LIBRA 24 September - 23 October

Steady as you go with finances. You don’t have to become a miser but

do give thought to swelling the coffers. Your direction may undergo a

change as a new opportunity arises. This is a huge thing for you and

you’d be wise to make the most of it; but do ensure you look where

you’re going as there are no guarantees on this journey. Keeping an

eye on others actions wouldn’t go amiss either! Thought for 2025:

Your inner strength and courage will see you overcome

challenges.

SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November

Someone kind offers a supportive, listening, ear; but that’s as much as

they can offer. The machinations of correcting a situation are down to

you and you alone. Your future security depends on your actions now

and you’d be wise to think carefully before acting. Listen to your

intuition; it will guide you well during this transitional phase. A new

future beckons and you’re about to discover some truths that make

sense of your history. Thought for 2025: Find where you truly

belong. A warm welcome awaits you.

GEMINI 22 May - 21 June

SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 21 December

Celebrations abound and it’s good to get together with family and The devil’s in the detail as, yet again, finances raise their head. Scrutiny

friends to enjoy the good times together. One scenario requires of incomings and outgoings is advised and fresh ideas on how to plug

patience and you could feel like you’re wading through treacle; two gaps should be considered. Don’t hold yourself back; you’re more than

steps forward and one step back! It’s a minor irritation which will soon capable for any task set before you but you do need to unfetter yourself

pass. Someone keeps a close eye on you and not in a good way. Keep from past thinking. Again, play your cards close to your chest. You never

what with. Thought for 2025: The close bonds of family support Thought for 2025: Logical thought processes and discernment

and nourish the soul.

give you the upper hand.

CAPRICORN 22 December - 20 January

Competition remains as you battle to have your say. Don’t be tempted

to hold yourself back; your thoughts, and input, are just as valid as the

next persons. Be cautious though! Choose your words, and actions,

carefully as a contented future will require all parties to work in

harmony. There’ll be a period, as the dust settles, when you won’t

know what to expect next, but be assured that a considerate attitude

now pays dividends. Thought for 2025: Step back occasionally and

let events unfold as they will.

AQUARIUS 21 January - 19 February

Make a decision regarding your future and stick to it. You can, and

should, make tweaks as necessary but know this is no time for

dithering. Balance of mind, body, and soul, are imperative and they

should be fed in equal measure for you to perform at your very best.

Enjoy the moments of contentment you’ll experience and don’t be

afraid to make wishes. There’s a good chance they’ll be granted at this

time. Fabulous! Thought for 2025: Sometimes there’s a need to

stand up and be counted.

PISCES 20 February - 20 March

Any doubts or fears you have in your mind need close scrutiny. Try

understanding the root cause of them. If it’s the prospect of defeat, or

being wrong about something, giving cause for concern; ask yourself

what’s the worst that can happen? It’ll be nothing like you’re imagining.

Previous investments of time, effort, and money are about to pay off

and you’re in a far better place than before. Actually, your future looks

quite rosy! Thought for 2025: Confidence, charm, and humour will

bring the outcomes you desire.

The Chesterfield Canal Is Heading Our Way

On Saturday the 8 th of February 2025 Killamarsh

Heritage Society welcome you to come along to a

joint event with Chesterfield Canal Trust when you

can find out about the plans for bringing the Canal

back into Killamarsh.

Work began to restore Chesterfield Canal in the late

1980s but plans to bring the historic canal back into

use haven’t been easy.

When HS2 announced their route would cross part

of the canal, negoaons had to take place to come

to an agreement allowing the canal to pass under

the railway and the Covid 19 Lockdown didn’t help

maers either.

But now things are moving apace and at the end of

October 2024 the new 38m (125 ) Trans-Pennine

Trail Bridge was lowered into place over the

Chesterfield Canal in Staveley.

And, of course, there are plans in place for the

Canal to come back through Killamarsh.

And with it, it's hoped new places to eat, water

sports, and boat hire will aract tourists and boost

the local economy.

So come along with your quesons to Killamarsh

Methodist Church on Saturday the 8 th of February

between 10.00 am and 3.00pm for a cuppa and a

chat.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Six Nations Rugby

A Legacy of Rivalries and Passion

The 2025 Six Naons Championship kicks off on

31st January, when France host Wales under the

Friday night lights in Paris.

It’s one of the oldest and most presgious rugby

tournaments in the world. It brings together

England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, and Italy

in an annual compeon that capvates fans with

fierce rivalries and thrilling matches.

The championship began as the Home Naons

Championship, contested between England,

Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. By 1910, France

joined the fray, transforming the compeon into

the Five Naons Championship.

Five became six in 2000 when Italy joined, marking

the birth of the Six Naons Championship as we

know it today. Despite inially struggling to

compete with the established rugby powers, Italy's

inclusion expanded the championship's reach and

added a new layer of intrigue.

Over their long history, first the Five Naons then

the Six Naons have delivered countless

unforgeable moments. One of the most

remarkable achievements came in 1973 when the

five naons finished ed, with each team winning

two matches. This extraordinary result

underscored the evenly matched nature of the

compeon and remains the only me the

tournament ended without a clear winner.

The Grand Slam - winning all matches in a single

tournament - is a rare and celebrated feat.

England’s 2003 campaign was especially

memorable, as they not only secured the Grand

Slam but also carried that momentum to win the

Rugby World Cup later that year. Led by captain

Marn Johnson and guided by Jonny Wilkinson's

legendary kicking, England demonstrated

unparalleled dominance.

Upsets have also defined the championships’

drama. In 1999, Scotland stunned England in the

final Five Naons match to deny them a Grand

Slam, with a superb kicking display from Sco

Hasngs. More recently, in 2007, Italy shocked

Scotland with an historic victory at Murrayfield,

cemenng their place as a compeve force in the

championship.

This season, Ireland head into the 2025

compeon looking for a third tle in a row.

They didn’t manage a clean sweep in 2024,

aer England beat them at Twickenham.

France have been their closest rivals in recent

years and – with superstar scrum-half Antoine

Dupont back from winning gold in the Olympic

rugby sevens – seem likely to be the biggest

threat to an Irish hat-trick.

Get ready for some thrills and possibly some

surprises. The Six Naons never fails to deliver.

History

Sir Winston Churchill's

Death in 1965

This month Killamarsh Heritage Society mark 60

years since the death of Sir Winston Churchill, who

died at his London home on the 24 th of January

1965 aged 90.

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965)

is considered one of the greatest Brish prime

ministers of all me. Historians widely aribute

Churchill with being “the greatest statesman of the

20 th century.” He was an effecve leader and

statesman because of his tremendous ability to

inspire people; his unique strategic insight, his

relentless passion and his imperturbable

personality.

He died following a series of stokes, the last of

which occurred on the 15 th of January 1965. His

last words were to his son-in-law Christopher

Soames, “I’m so bored with it all”.

Sir Winston was given a state funeral at St Paul’s

Cathedral on the 30 th of January 1965, the first

state funeral of a polician in the century. The

funeral was broadcast live on the BBC and seen

around the world. It was the biggest naonal event

since the Coronaon of Elizabeth II in 1953.

The BBC posioned 36 cameras along the route of

the cortege went from Westminster Hall to St

Paul's Cathedral and then back along the river

from Tower Hill to the Fesval Hall. They recorded

the full ceremonial but also captured the

unexpected, such as the moment the dockside

cranes were lowered in salute. His body was then

transported by steam train to Bladon, where he

was buried alongside other members of the

Churchill family, at St Marn's Church, Bladon just

outside Blenheim Palace grounds. The funeral

procession was lined with crowds from

Westminster to St Paul's Cathedral. The

locomove on the train displayed three large

white discs in a "V" formaon, which represented

Churchill's famous "V" for Victory sign.

It was common royal equee for the Monarch to

not aend a funeral service outside of the royal

family. Queen Elizabeth II not only aended the

service but was among the first officials to arrive at

St Paul's, making her presence known even before

the coffin and Churchill family arrived.

Churchill is perhaps best known for his leadership

during World War II, when he opposed the

appeasement of Germany in the 1930s and

warned about the rise of Hitler and the Nazis. He

rallied the naon against Hitler, inspiring them to

“stand alone” against Germany. He is remembered

for his leadership through the Bale of Britain, the

Blitz and Dunkirk and he was known for his refusal

to give in, even when things were going badly.

He served as Conservave Prime Minister twice,

from 1940 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1955. He was

also a writer and orator and in a 2002 BBC poll was

voted the Greatest Britain. He was famous for his

speeches of which there are many, and I am sure

you can remember a few.

Sir Winston and Lady Clemenne Churchill were

married for 56 years and had five children, three of

whom survived to adulthood. The Union Flag

which was draped over Sir Winston Churchill’s

coffin during the funeral is on display in the

Churchill Museum at the Churchill War Rooms.
