Tony’s lifetime of football
– 70 seasons and counting
Football is never far from
Tony Woods’ mind. In
autumn he will lace up
the boots for his 71st
consecutive season.
Reporter Sam Coughlan
catches up with him
“ I DON’T SEE any sense in
changing. It’s just part of the
blood,” Tony Woods says of his
passion for the beautiful game.
He will turn 80 in May, and has
played for Western every season
since he was nine – a true club
man.
He first picked up the sport
at Mairehau Primary School,
playing with a group of mates at
lunchtimes.
They would later form a team at
Western, managed by one of their
parents, to play in the under-9
competition at Hagley Park.
Seventy years on, he features
in midfield for and coaches one
of Western’s two 50-plus masters
teams, is officially club patron and
also helps organise the club’s summer
5s programme with junior
convener Arron Stewart.
“The only thing I haven’t been is
president,” he said.
“And I don’t want to.”
So what keeps a man nearing
his ninth decade coming back to
the sport?
“ I think it’s good for you,” he
said.
“I don’t want to just sit down
and die, I just don’t think it’s a
good idea.
“If I can run around, why not?”
But Woods concedes he is not
sure how much football he has left
in him.
“ It scares me, you know, it really
does. Sometimes I sit here and I
think, the time’s coming and I’m
scared of it, and it’s coming really
fast.
“But I suppose the other thing is
there are always things I can do, as
long as I’ve got plenty of energy. I
like getting down there and helping
Arron out, setting up the park
for the kids five-a-sides.”
Woods never played at the top
level – his favourite team to play
for was Tony’s Tuggers, named
after the man himself, which were
more than 70 years, and only
formed in 1975 and played in division
2.
“ They were out of this world.
We won quite a few (division 2)
titles. I don’t think I was ever the
star.
“ We used to go on away trips
at the end of the year, we’d take
two busloads – not one bus, two,
mainly supporters. We’d book out
a whole hotel in Wellington, they
were good days.”
Summer theatre’s ‘unsinkable’
show set to open today
THE COMPLETE Voyage of the RMS
Titanic will make its debut today, as
the Anthony Harper Summer Theatre
season gets under way.
It will run until January 26 on the
Archery Lawn at the Botanic Gardens.
The outdoor show brings a playful
take on the Titanic story, said city
council manager events and arts Lucy
Blackmore.
“The show will include iconic movie
moments, surprising conspiracy theories
and a banger 90s soundtrack.
“With just three actors and a musician,
the cast will have their work cut
out for them. The actors each play a
host of characters, from the leading
man and lady to the extras – some
from the film and others dreamt up by
the show’s creators,” Blackmore said.
Anthony Harper Summer Theatre
has been running for more than 30
years and draws about 7000 spectators
each season.
“It’s a staple in the summer event
calendar and attracts some of the city’s
top theatre makers,” said Blackmore.
Last year’s show The Odyssey by
Dan Bain won two awards – the Adam
NZ play award and the McNaughton
South Island play award.
“It’s awesome to be able to bring
such high calibre shows to the community
year after year. We’re lucky
to have Lizzie Tollemache and Dan
Pengelly at the helm of this year’s
show.
THEATRE IN THE GARDENS: The Complete Voyage of the RSM
Titanic starts today.
PHOTOS: CCC
“As writers, directors and performers,
they bring their vast experience in
devising, improvisation, and comedy
to deliver a captivating theatre experience,”
Blackmore said.
Audience members are welcome
to bring a picnic, picnic rugs and
camping chairs. All ages can attend,
although the shows are best enjoyed
by ages 12 years and over.
Anthony Harper Summer Theatre
is a free event, but koha will be
gratefully accepted by the production’s
theatre company, Rollicking
• Evening shows start at 7pm
and weekend matinees at 4pm
Councillor lapping up swim lessons
TAKING SWIMMING lessons
as an adult may seem daunting,
but city councillor Jake McLellan
and his mates are diving straight
in.
“I wanted to start swimming
because it’s a great, low-impact
and fun form of exercise, and I
hadn’t spent much time in a pool
for quite a while,” said McLellan.
“So, I roped in a couple of
friends to make the experience
more enjoyable. While they
insisted they didn’t need lessons,
as both had done plenty of swimming
in high school, it’s amazing
how much technique can decline
over time.
“We’ve all really benefited
from a top-up in skills.”
The city council offers adult
lessons as part of the Swimsmart
programme at Graham Condon,
Jellie Park, Matatiki Hornby
Centre, Pioneer, Taiora QEII and
Te Pou Toetoe Linwood Pool.
The programme sees about 170
adults attending beginner classes
each week across the city.
City council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel Cox
said there are many reasons
adults to learn to swim.
“The lessons cater for anyone
ages 14 plus, but they have
become more popular over the
last few years with the majority
of attendees between 25 and 50
years old.
“We teach adults who have
never learnt to swim as a child,
some who have had a traumatic
experience in the water previously,
and we also have adults
whose children or grandchildren
are learning, and they want to
swim with them.
“It’s really important to raise
awareness about water safety
leading into the summer months
– it’s never too late to learn a new
skill or give yourself a refresh.”
Provisional figures released by
Water Safety New Zealand show
a reduction in the number of
drownings last year.
There were 71 preventable
drownings, down from 90 the
year before and well below the
10-year average of 83, a spokesperson
told RNZ.
Last year’s total was the lowest
since 2018 and the third lowest
in nearly two decades.
The holiday period just ended
saw three drownings, down from
an average of 10, RNZ reported.
McLellan said he was only
three lessons in, but it was
going really well.
“The instructors have been
incredibly patient with me, but
also genuinely passionate about
helping improve anyone’s skills
and overall fitness. As a city,
we’re so lucky to have such a
good range of recreation and
sport centres.
“I’m confident that with about
two more 25-minute lessons,
we’ll be ready to compete
internationally!”
Adult swimming lessons are
free for city council pool and
gym members, or $14 a
lesson for non-members.
Rotary honours community-minded pupils
• By Barbara Crooks
COMMUNITY service by 11
primary school pupils has been
recognised with a special award
from Ferrymead Rotary.
The awards, based on the
recommendations of teachers,
are made to pupils who have
demonstrated key leadership
aspects.
The criteria are based on pupils’
ability to be good listeners,
to show initiative, to follow
through on their actions, and to
demonstrate the ability to work
with a variety of people to get the
job done.
Those honoured were: Phoenix
Prime and Lincoln Binnie
(Bromley); Ezrah Dela Cruz
(Heathcote Valley); Rishtika
Reddy and Archie Campbell (Mt
Pleasant); Eli Dimbleby and Zoe
Mulling (Redcliffs); Riley Legge
and Izzy Every (Our Lady Star of
the Sea); Cruz Webb-St John and
Illiane Powrie (Sumner); Payton
Tuhimata and Sakura Tatsumo
(Te Waka Unua).
Reports from the schools
revealed a variety of qualities
and activities across the awardwinners.
These included:
• Kindness to and support for
other pupils; leadership roles;
• Displaying excellent manners
within the school and wider
community;
• Contributions to school sports
teams, other school activities;
FUTURE LEADERS: Heathcote Valley School’s Ezrah Dela Cruze, Sakura Tatsuno and Payton Tuhimata from Te Waka
Unua School, and Riley Legge and Izzy Every from Our Lady Star of the Sea School are part of an 11-student group given
special awards by Ferrymead Rotary.
• Work in school libraries;
• Community involvement
(some recipients have been
working with elderly residents,
or have been involved in
community or church activities);
• Positive role modelling for
fellow pupils;
• Demonstrating the ability to
work with adults, teachers and
other pupils in various roles.
Ferrymead Rotarian Pat
Edward, who has overseen the
project in recent years, said
the aim is to promote a “good
citizen” ethic within schools and
the wider community.
She emphasised the criteria
for the awards do not include
academic or sporting skills.
Rather, they concentrate
on pupils’ contribution and
service to the school and the
community, and relationships
with fellow pupils.
Nominations are made by
the teachers, and each recipient
receives a gift voucher and a
certificate.
The awards are Ferrymead
Rotary’s longest-running
project. The first awards were
made in 1992, the year the
club was founded, and have
continued uninterrupted every
year since.
Trust gears up for a big
year with mall revamp
• By Jack Ward
A NEW YEAR brings a new title: The
Greater New Brighton Leadership
Group is now the Greater New Brighton
Community Trust.
The change has been made to streamline
processes for the Village Green project – a
revamp of the New Brighton Mall, set to
be behind the Pierside building on Marine
Pde.
Trust advisor and treasurer Neil
Cooper said becoming a trust will provide
protection to the trustees and allow it to
engage contractors directly, rather than
having to work through a third party.
“It is administrative action to provide a
more efficient decision making structure,”
he said.
Trust chair Lin Klenner
is optimistic for what lies
ahead this year with the
project.
“I am super excited, in
2025/2026 (we) will really
see a huge change in the
mall.”
The trust is in the
process of contracting an
Lin
Klenner
architect to draft a tender document for
the Village Green, which will go to the
city council for approval in February.
From there, decisions will be made
as to what can be developed within
the available budget of $2.5 million,
funded with help from the Christchurch
Earthquake Appeal Trust. Meetings
will then be held to inform the local
DRAFT CONCEPT PLANS: The New
Brighton Leadership Group has
become the Greater New Brighton
Community Trust, as it looks
forward to a big year ahead with
the Village Green project.
community.
“We’re finally at the stage where we
can start looking at building. We are
absolutely committed to bringing the mall
back up, we never promised anything we
could not deliver on,” Klenner said.
“I’ve been part of this since day one, put
my heart and soul into it – we believe in
this community.”
Both Cooper and Klenner said there has
been resounding support from residents
to make it an essential place in Brighton.
Being ready for next summer was close
to Klenner’s heart.
It was her “personal goal” was to see
bands performing at the Village Green
next summer.
“We want to do right by our community
and the community deserves the project
to make a long-term difference.”
Footballing legacy
spans generations
• From page 1
Woods has well and truly passed on his
love of the game – his son Reuben played
more than 100 games for Western’s first
team, and Reuben’s nine-year-old daughter
Lulu has just finished her first season
at Ferrymead Bays.
“ She (Lulu) is the love of my life at the
moment,” Woods said.
He watches all of her games on Saturday
mornings before heading to his own
in the afternoon – only missing one game
for Western, when Lulu was playing in
Oxford.
Woods jokes that Lulu was always going
to play football – her mother is Alana
Gunn, the former Canterbury United
Pride and current New Zealand under-17s
coach, and Gunn’s partner is Football
Fern and Wellington Phoenix captain
Annalie Longo.
“ Lulu, she’s got no chance in life. With
me, her dad, of course, is involved in
football and then there’s many more. So
it’s in her blood.”
Woods also ran the Christchurch Summer
League for 30 years at Hagley Park
on weekday nights – up until the earthquakes
in 2011.
“ We had four grounds at Hagley, so
eight teams a night over four nights.”
Looking back on his years in football,
he reminisced on some of his favourite
moments.
“Those were great years, with the
club and being club captain, managing
the senior team, coaching the Tuggers,
“I don’t want to just sit down
and die, I just don’t think it’s a
good idea.” – Tony Woods
playing and coaching, involvement in
juniors, putting up football posts and
marking out grounds for years and years.
“Plenty of memories.”
TUGGERS: Woods’ favourite team
was Western’s division 2 side, Tony’s
Tuggers, formed in 1975 and named
after him. He’s pictured with a team
Knobbly no-knead
loaf for a new year
Rise to the challenge with this
great fruity, seedy, cakey bread,
writes Nigel Slater
I BEGIN THE year with flour on my hands
it’s something of a ritual. The kneading of
dough is the way I have started the new year
for as long as I can remember.
This time though, a change of step. A
dough that requires mixing, cake-like, in a
capacious bowl, rather than pummelling on
a board.
Linseed and treacle bread
I heartily recommend putting a baking
stone in the oven to heat up first. Makes a
medium-sized loaf.
Ingredients
200g rye flour
200g strong white bread flour
50g barley flakes
1 tsp sea salt
2 tbsp black treacle, lightly heaped
350ml warm water
1 x 7g sachet fast-acting yeast
40g rolled oats
35g pumpkin seeds
25g sunflower seeds
30g golden linseeds
75g golden sultanas
Method
• Warm a deep, wide mixing bowl. The
warmth will help your dough rise more
quickly. Combine the flours and barley
flakes then lightly crush the sea salt flakes in
the palm of your hand and stir them in.
• Put the black treacle into a jug then stir
in the warm water, dissolving the treacle as
you stir.
• Tip in the yeast, let it dissolve then pour
into the flour and barley. Using a wooden
spoon rather than your hands – the dough
is sticky – stir in the rolled oats, pumpkin,
sunflower, golden linseeds and sultanas. Mix
for a full minute, so the flour, liquid, seeds
and fruits are thoroughly combined. The
texture of the dough should be very moist,
poised between that of a bread dough and a
cake mixture.
• Dust the surface lightly with flour, cover
with a tea towel and leave in a warm place
for an hour or so. Any warm, draught-free
spot will work. Check the bowl occasionally
to make sure it is warm, but not too hot.
• Get the oven hot – it will need to be
at 220°C. If you have one, place a bread
or pizza stone, generously floured, in the
oven to get hot. Failing that, a baking
sheet will do.
• When the oven is up to temperature
and the dough has risen to almost twice its
original volume, transfer it to the hot baking
stone or sheet, reshaping it into a round loaf
as you go. Bake for 35 minutes, until the
crust is lightly crisp and the base sounds
hollow when tapped.
• Transfer the warm loaf to a cooling
rack and allow to rest for a good 30 minutes
before slicing. The loaf will keep, wrapped in
clingfilm and foil, for 4-5 days.
Smoked salt, toasted
onion and juniper butter
Uses for this smoky, aromatic butter go
well beyond spreading on a loaf. Melt slices
over potatoes served hot from the steamer;
use it to sauté salmon steaks or fish; toss
wedges of lightly cooked cabbage in it. The
recipe makes 250g and it freezes well.
Ingredients
1 small onion
250g unsalted butter
8 juniper berries
10g dill
smoked salt
Method
• Peel the onion and cut into quarters from
root to tip, then slice each piece thinly. Melt
30g of the butter in a shallow pan, stir in the
sliced onion then let it cook over a moderate
heat for 15-20 minutes. Remove from the pan
and leave to cool.
• Place the rest of the butter in a mixing
bowl and beat to a soft, lightly whipped
consistency with a wooden spoon. Bash the
juniper berries with a heavy weight, such
as a pestle, so they release their fragrance
then add them to the butter. Remove the dill
fronds from their stems, then chop them
finely and add to the butter.
• Add the salt to the butter, then the
cooled, toasted onions and combine gently,
taking care not to overmix. Serve the butter
with the bread.
• The butter will keep for several days in
the fridge. You can freeze it, too. Roll the
butter into a fat cylinder shape, then place
on a piece of clingfilm, wrap and seal. Freeze
until needed. Alternatively, and to make
defrosting easier, refrigerate the butter until
cold enough to slice, then wrap and freeze in
individual slices.
