One fateful afternoon in August, Melanie V. Zavala of San Antonio got a<br />
visit from her brother, Adam Vara, who came bearing <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lottery</strong> tickets,<br />
as he regularly does. He divvied up the Weekly Grand tickets to scratch, and<br />
as luck would have it, Melanie found the top prize totaling $1,040,000 under<br />
the one she received.<br />
“I looked at it and thought, ‘no, this isn’t real, this doesn’t<br />
happen to me, this doesn’t happen to our family,’”<br />
Zavala said. “My brother was looking at his John Wayne<br />
[Veterans Cash] ticket with a $5 prize on it and then<br />
looking back at my ticket. He finally said, ‘That’s your<br />
prize, you won it, you keep it.’”<br />
Zavala plans to share her<br />
winnings with her parents and<br />
seven siblings. “We’re probably<br />
going to have another big<br />
family barbecue because<br />
of this win,” Zavala said.<br />
“We’re always looking <strong>for</strong><br />
an excuse to have one.<br />
This is a good one, I think.”<br />
Zavala’s brother bought the<br />
ticket at the Skyway Food<br />
Mart located at 6226 S. Flores<br />
in San Antonio.<br />
Marlon J. Boyd of Amarillo wasn’t shy about showing his excitement after<br />
learning he’d won $1 million playing the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lottery</strong>’s $500 Million<br />
Frenzy scratch-off.<br />
“I turned into Lionel Richie and started ‘dancing on the ceiling’ when I<br />
saw that $1 million on the ticket,” Boyd said. “Then I turned into one of<br />
those people from The Price Is Right ® and started jumping up and down<br />
right there in the store. You always want to win the big prize, but when you<br />
finally see it on your ticket, it’s just amazing!”<br />
Boyd stopped at Taylor Petroleum Co. #9, located at 2100<br />
S. Grand in Amarillo, to cash in two other tickets he<br />
had. “I’ve been going there <strong>for</strong> only two weeks because<br />
I work across from the store, but on Tuesday<br />
my intuition told me to go there and buy some tickets.”<br />
Boyd says he plans to help his family<br />
and his church with his winnings.<br />
“After that, I’m going to keep my<br />
dream going and continue with<br />
my music,” he said. “I plan<br />
to stay focused on<br />
that, but I might get<br />
a new car, too. And,<br />
of course, never stop<br />
thanking God <strong>for</strong> this<br />
blessing.”
Jerry Wilson of Longview depended on numbers he knew well when<br />
he penciled in his Cash Five ® ticket. The numbers he chose—the birth<br />
dates and ages of his immediate family—served him well,<br />
bringing him the top prize of $22,064 in the August 1<br />
Cash Five drawing.<br />

EZ Mart #443, 1910 Judson, in<br />
Longview. The numbers<br />
drawn were 8-29-9-16-5.<br />

money I’ve won. I feel<br />
very happy and blessed<br />
