TOYOTAS
Aren’t you glad that the car in front is a
Toyota rather than the car behind you.
Slightly modified Toyota slogan.
“The car that just slammed into the car in
front is a Toyota - with a dodgy throttle”.
NEWS : ‘Toyota Recalls 180,000 UK Cars’
I’m not surprised, that would be a lot of cars
to just forget about.
“Just driving my new Toyota Prius, chat to
you later, can’t stop.”
So far Toyota have had problems with brakes,
accelerator pedals and steering. Reminds me
a lot of the glory days of British Leyland cars.
The car in front jammed in the back of the
car in front is a Toyota.
This weekend I’ll be renting that flick about
the Toyota mess...
“Total Recall”.
MEN & WOMEN
A woman marries a man expecting he will
someday change but he never does. A man
marries a woman expecting that she will never
change , but she does!
A woman must always have the last word in
any argument . Anything a man says after that
is the beginning of a new argument
Smart man + smart woman = Romance
Smart man + dumb woman = Affair
Dumb man + smart woman = Marriage
Dumb man + dumb woman = Pregnancy
OLDIES
There’s good news and bad
news for seniors and their
mental health.
The good news? Drinking
blueberry juice improves an
older person’s memory.
The bad news? They have to
remember to buy it.
DOCTOR DOCTOR
A man goes to her doctor with a bit of lettuce
hanging out of his backside.
The Doctor says “that looks nasty”. He says
“Nasty?” says the man, “it’s just the tip of the
iceberg!”
DINNER INVITE
“Darling,” said this husband to his wife, “I’ve
invited a friend home for supper.”
“What? Are you crazy? The house is a mess, I
haven’t been shopping, all the dishes are dirty,
and I don’t feel like cooking a fancy meal!”
“I know all that.”
“Then why did you invite a friend for supper?”
“Because the poor fool’s thinking about getting
married.”

The Editor’s bit
Well after my rant on the arts pages last month I really hoped that I would be wrong about
the Theatre and Arts commumity, but there were just two direct responses (Thanks Caro
& Tony). So in their silence the theatre community has spoken. So rather than a general
listing of Arts Centre/Theatre events, from this month on, Suited & Booted will concentrate
on giving more space to just one or two events and hopefully giving them the ‘air’ they
deserve.
I realise that this approach will mean that others will miss out but I think I gave everyone
enough opportunity to have their say...they just didn’t.
Jazz Talk in Martock
I wasn’t sure where to include this event so here it is. On Thurday 25th March at 7.30pm,
The Fifth Audio/visual Classic Jazz Talk “Strings in Jazz”takes place in Martock Church.
It’s our birthday!
Yes this month we are 8 years young. We have grown from 2000 copies of 16 pages to
5000 copies of 24 or 28 pages. We have a web site, a mailing list, Facebook page and
more besides. The look of the magazine is so different now and yet at its core the values
remain the same. Deliver information about local live music, give you a laugh with a few
jokes and promote local business.
I hope you think we still do a good job but if not I’m still happy to hear from you.
Gig advice
A lot of work goes into producing the magazine but mistakes can and do happen. Bands
change their plans and pubs (sadly) do go out of business. Before setting out to watch a gig
do please confirm the event is still on if you are travelling any distance.
Remember to tell your Mum you love her on Sunday
14th!
that edition is Wednesday 17th March. Send your event details to
Welcome back to the March edition of Suited and Booted. It’s
incredible but this is actually our 8th birthday edition. Hands up
those who remember the first one; it seems so long ago now. The
Gig Guide is a paid entry section in Suited and Booted. It costs
only £8 per month to have your venue listed in this Gig Guide section.
It’s free if you actually book an advert with us.
Email suit_boot@yahoo.co.uk for more details.
If you can’t afford £8 per month then you can still get your live
music events listed in the centre pages for free. Mind if you can’t
afford £8 to promote a gig, your problems are a lot bigger than
is the musical style on offer when on Friday 12th, The Fat Marrows Blues Band are your performers
and then on Saturday 13th indie band The Underdogs
play mainly original material & modern covers. Friday
19th, sees Tragic Roundabout (love that name!) perform;
five musicians and a drummer, their talents finely honed to
bring you a dazzling show incorporating an eclectic melange
of hardcore punked up Ska / Klezmer blended with an unsubtle
hint of the mystic Eastern Bloc. Off The Rails feature
on Saturday 20th and then on Friday 26th, WOB engages
your musical imagination. Finally, having had very good reviews,
Willie and the Bandits perform on Saturday 27th at
9:00pm; taking on old tunes and lifting them to new heights. Tragic Roundabout
All this music and the regular quiz night every Tuesday at
8:00pm, that should keep you busy!
THE HOPE & ANCHOR (01308 422160) This month there is plenty going
on at the pub on St. Michaels Lane in Bridport. The music begins with an
early celebration of St Patrick’s Day when Crooked Furrow provide the
celtic tunes. On the 20th, John de Barra will be performing for you and
then on the 21st, join in with the Jam Session that starts at around 4pm.
On Sunday 28th, Flakey Jake will provide your afternoon entertainment
at around 4.30pm and then just into April, Design will be the band of
choice on Saturday 3rd. That’s it!
We do get asked for the phone numbers of
bands and for those of you looking to book
acts we are pleased to recommend:
YOUNG MUSICIAN
COMPETITION
The 2010 Young Musician of the Year
competition has been launched as part of
this June’s week-long Festival in Hinton St
George. When the competition was first held
in 2008, five local schools took part. The
winner was Bethany Tomlinson, then aged
13, of Holyrood Community School in Chard
who performed brilliantly on the trumpet.
The other very
talented finalists
played a variety
of stringed and
wind instruments
and the
piano before a
distinguished
panel of judges.
The competition
this year has
been split into
two age groups,
2008 winner was
14 or under and
Bethany Tomlinson
15 and above,
with significant amounts of prize money
kindly donated by the Hinton St George
Reading Room Trust.
Encouraging young musicians to come forward,
competition organizer Jane Jackson said...
“We would be pleased to hear from any promising
young musician in full-time education
who lives or attends school in the Crewkerne,
Ilminster and Chard areas and within a 9 mile
radius of Hinton St George. Heats will be
held at Maiden Beech and Wadham Schools in
Crewkerne with the final in the village church
at Hinton St George on June 9th. This is an exciting
opportunity for the finalists to experience
playing in front of a paying audience.”
“The prize money amounts to £450 in total
and entry to the competition is free. Following
the 2008 Hinton St George Festival there
was a sufficient surplus to enable the organizing
committee to make cash donations to
participating schools to further music tuition
and it is hoped that this will be repeated later
this year.
“Application forms can be obtained from
schools’ music teachers or downloaded from
www.hintonfestival.info where full details of
the competition can be found.
THE GOBLIN
One morning a woman was walking out of her
front door, when she noticed a strange little
man at the bottom of her garden.
“You’re a goblin,” she says, “I caught you and
you owe me three wishes!”. So the goblin
replies “OK, you caught me fair and square,
what’s your first wish?”. The woman stops and
thinks for a second, “I want a huge mansion
to live in.”, goblins replies “OK, you’ve got
it.”. Woman again thinks it over, “My second
wish is a Mercedes.” “OK, you’ve got that too.”
“My last wish is a million dollars!”. The goblin
then says “OK, you’ve got it. But to make your
wishes come true you have to have sex all night
with me.” “OK then, if that’s what it takes...”
Next morning the little man wakes the woman up.
“Tell me,” says the man, “how old are you?”
“I’m 27”, she replies.
“Good grief”, says the man, “27 and you still
believe in goblins”
AWKWARD CUSTOMER
Cursed with a bald head and a wooden leg,
a man is surprised to find that he has been
invited to a fancy dress party. Deciding that
he might pull it off if he wears a costume to
hide his head and leg, he writes to a theatrical
outfitters asking them for adivice.
A few days later, he gets a parcel from the firm
with a note that says, “Dear Sir, please find
enclosed a pirate’s outfit. The bandana will
cover your bald head and with your wooden
leg you will be just right as a Buccaneer.”
Unfortunately, the man finds this deeply
insulting, as they have so clearly drawn attention
to his wooden leg, so he fires off a letter
of complaint.
A week goes by before the postie delivers another
parcel with a note that reads, “Dear Sir,
sorry about our previous suggestion ... please
find enclosed a monk’s habit. The long robe
will cover your wooden leg and the hood will
hide your bald head but you will really look
the part if you don’t put the hood up.”
This drives him ballistic! They have simply
switched from drawing attention to his
wooden leg to his balding head. He fires off
another letter. The next day he receives a
tiny parcel by courier with a hastily scawled
note ... “Enclosed is a tin of treacle, pour it
over your bloody head, stick your wooden leg
up your arse and go as a toffee apple ... you
grumpy old git!”
INDIAN NAME
An old Indian was asked the name of his wife.
He replied, “Wife Name - Three Horse.”
“That’s an unusual name for your wife, Three
Horse. What does it mean?”
“It’s an old Indian name. Means Nag, Nag, Nag.”
FARMER
A farmer was driving along the road with a
load of fertilizer. A little boy, playing in front of
his house, saw him and called, “What’ve you
got in your truck?”
“Fertilizer,” the farmer replied. “What are you
going to do with it?” asked the little boy.
“Put it on strawberries,” answered the farmer.
“You ought to live here,” the little boy advised
him. “We put sugar and cream on ours.”

Following on from the success of last
October’s first event, YEOVIL LIVE have
announced their second WEEKENDER,
featuring music, theatre, dance and visual
arts events happening at several venues in
the town between Friday 12th and Sunday
14th March.
On the Friday the Weekender kicks off at
12noon at the Bandstand (outside Woods in
Middle Street) with performances by Yeovil
College’s current crop of new bands, plus a
set from special guests Brought Into Being,
and in the evening The Animal Urges will
kick up a rock’n’roll storm at Woods Wine
Bar.
From 12noon on Saturday, the Bandstand
will host another selection of local bands
and solo performers (including Hundred
Days and Aidan Simpson), accompanied by
dancers Formul 8 and a graffiti art demonstration
by Kiron Bambrough, whose work
will also be on show in Woods. At 3.15pm
Hacker Farm (more about them later in
the magazine) will introduce themselves
to Yeovil’s shoppers, and in the evening,
Woods will host former indie chart-topper
Simon Chesterfield’s Design with Spidireen
in support.
On Sunday the Orange Box will host one
of it’s popular Open Mic nights, featuring
some special guests. Musicians and performance
artists wanting to book themselves
SCHOOL PLAY
Mat’s dad picked him up from school to
take him to a dental appointment. Knowing
the parts for the school play were supposed
to be posted today, he asked his son if he
got a part. Matt enthusiastically announced
that he’d gotten a part. “I play a man who’s
been married for twenty years.” “That’s
great, son. Keep up the good work and
before you know it they’ll be giving you a
speaking part.”
YOUR DUCK IS DEAD
A woman brought a very limp duck into a
veterinary surgeon. As she laid
her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his
stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest.
After a moment or two, the vet shook his head
and sadly said, “I’m sorry, your duck, Puddles, has
passed away.”
The distressed woman wailed, “Are you sure?”
“Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead,” replied the
vet..
“How can you be so sure?” she protested. “I
mean you haven’t done any testing on him
or anything. He might just be in a coma or
something.”
The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left
the room. He returned a few minutes later with
a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck’s owner
looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his
hind legs, put his front paws on the examination
table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom.
He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and
shook his head.
The vet patted the dog on the head and took it
out of the room. A few minutes later he returned
with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also
delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot.
The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head,
meowed softly and strolled out of the room.
The vet looked at the woman and said, “I’m
sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100%
certifiably, a dead duck.”
The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few
keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the
woman.
The duck’s owner, still in shock, took the bill.
“£150!” she cried, “£150 just to tell me my duck
is dead!”
The vet shrugged, “I’m sorry. If you had just taken
my word for it, the bill would have been £20, but
with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it’s now
£150.”
SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE
Two guys were discussing popular family trends
on sex, marriage, and values. Stuart said, “I didn’t
sleep with my wife before we got married, did
you?” Leroy replied, “I’m not sure, what was her
maiden name?

MEDICAL LECTURE
A professor at the University of Sydney was
giving a lecture on ‘Involuntary Muscular Contractions’
to his first year medical students.
Realising this was not the most riveting
subject, the professor decided to lighten the
mood slightly. He pointed to a young woman
in the front row and said, “Do you know what
your a$shole is doing while you’re having an
orgasm?”
She replied, “Probably fishing with his mates.”
It took 45 minutes to restore order in the
classroom...
HOPEFUL
pharmacist if he sells size extra large condoms.
He replies, “Yes we do. Would you like to
you mind if I wait around here until someone
does?”
SNOW JOKE
On a bitterly cold day during the recent big snow
over. A Traffic officer on patrol in his 4x4 on
came across a motorcyclist stranded on a steep
country road miles from the nearest town.
The rider who was all kitted out in protective
clothing and full face helmet.
“What’s the matter?” asked the TA Womble.
“Carburetor’s frozen up,” was the terse reply.
“Pee on it. That’ll thaw it out,” says TA Womble.
“I can’t do that ! “ replied the motorcyclist.
“OK, watch me and I will show you.”
The Womble then demonstrated by lubricating
the carburetor, as promised by pissing over it
himself.
The bike started and the biker rode off, waving. A
few days later, the local police office received a note
of thanks from the father of the motorbike rider.
It began: “On behalf of my daughter, who
recently was stranded ....”
AROUND
THE ARTS
CENTRES
The feedback to the proposal to change the format of these
arts pages was almost nil. There were two notable exceptions
and in particular I’d like to thank Tony Charman, Chairman of
the South Petherton Arts Trust for his response.
For the most part however there was no feedback. For that
reason these two pages will now be re-used to give more in
depth coverage to one or two arts events each month. I be-
lieve that this will be more valuable than attempting to skate over the surface of
all the local arts as we have been doing.
Tony in particular, highlighted the often precarious financial state of many arts
orgainsations and venues, explaining that they “dream of luxuries like an advertising
budget!”.
Well the hard fact is that without advertising this magazine, the Suited &
Booted website and emails would not exist. Things simply have to change if we
are to both survive and thrive.
HACKER FARM PRESENTS JUNKCRUNCH
Local audio-hacker and rogue coder Stephen Ives teams up with Yeovil-based writer/noisemagician/saboteur
Kek-w to present JUNKCRUNCH - a celebration of the home-made, the
salvaged and the hand-soldered. DIY electronics performed on obsolete tech and discarded,
post-consumerist debris. Make-do and mend. Broken music for a Broken Britain.
Expect: circuit-bent mayhem, cassettemulch and modified-toy noise. A bit like Punk, but without
the three chords or the riff borrowed from The Kinks. Without a hint of irony they describe
this is “beta-release of a better way of living”.
Hacker Farm is a new Yeovil-based initiative designed to create an infrastructure where local
noise-makers, experimental electronic musicians and outsider artists can network, socialise and
collaborate. It aims to offer a creative space where workshops can be hosted, and new skills,
strategies and practical techniques can be swapped or acquired.
One of Hacker Farm’s principle goals is to encourage its members to build or modify their own
musical instruments using discarded materials, recyclables and junk, along with cheap, locallysourced
electronic components. Its mission is to demystify and empower, to allow local musicians
to access new sets of skills. Its remit includes visual / video ‘hacks’ as well as audio. Where
appropriate, software will be used as well as hardware, but it should preferably be obsolete,
outmoded, intuitive, easily modified and free. Time to break out the old Commodore 64 and
hook it up to an amp.
If you’d like to know how this might sound then get to Yeovil Bandstand on Saturday 13th,
when at 3.15pm, as part of the Yeovil Live weekend there will be a performance. God only
knows how they’ll cope with old electronics if it rains though, perhaps it just adds to the performance!
STEVE HOWE TRIO IN
BRIDPORT
For nearly 40 years, Steve Howe has been at the
forefront of rock music as a model and inspiration
for other
guitarists and
musicians,
perhaps best
known as a
member of
the progressive
rock
group ‘Yes’
and latterly in
the reformed
‘Asia’.
The Steve Howe Trio, with son Dylan Howe,
rightly acclaimed as one of the best drummers
of his generation and keyboard maestro Ross
Stanley on Hammond organ, is in marked contrast
to his previous work and a truly masterful
combination.
Drawing on their love of jazz, blues and country,
the ‘Steve Howe Trio’ create a friendly tension
between Steve Howe compositions, Yes hits
and the hard bop jazz of Dylan Howe and Ross
Stanley. They’ll be playing music from Kenny
Burrell, Jimmy Smith and Roland Kirk as well as
new arrangements of Steve’s original compositions
and specially selected Yes classics.
“My trio has begun to fulfill a dream I’ve daydreamed
and possibly dreamed at night too,
that I would gradually lean my guitar style more
towards the great jazz influences that I have so
marveled at over the years” STEVE HOWE
The Steve Howe Trio will be playing at the
Electric Palace on Sunday 21st March. Doors
open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets: £12 for
members / £15 standard tickets.
