At the Knauss School of Business at the University of San Diego, we’re redefining

business on our own terms, at our own pace, on our own coastline. In a building

that’s not just built for the podcasts we record and the pitches we practice, but for

the community we live in. Where a student body comes from around the world to

create a more inclusive and profitable world for all. Where it’s not “we could” or

“we should” but “we absolutely will”. Because at the University of San Diego, we

believe there’s a better way to business. Apply Now at sandiego.edu/business.

Mt. Soledad

National Veterans

Memorial

HONORING VETERANS BY PRESERVING THEIR LEGACY

Mt. Soledad National

Veterans Memorial

For over 70 years, the Mt. Soledad

Memorial Association has maintained

one of the most inspirational and tranquil

memorials in the country. Situated

in La Jolla at the top of one of San

Diego’s highest mountain tops is the Mt.

Soledad National Veterans Memorial.

Overlooking the beautiful blue Pacific,

this vantage point offers 360-degree

views of all of San Diego County and South to Mexico.

But the spectacular views, sunsets and sunrises are only

part of what make this memorial such a special place.

The memorial is surrounded by 12 walls adorned with

black granite plaques displaying the names and faces of

individual veterans from all branches of the US military.

The majestic black granite walls were built in a concentric

parabolic design with gently sloped brick walkways that

offer a relaxing and inspirational stroll.

8 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

Being one of the most

unique veterans’

memorials in America, it

is the only one honoring

veterans, both living

and deceased, from the

Revolutionary War to

the current war on terror

and conflicts around the

world. At the very top

of the memorial stands

the iconic 29-foot cross.

The base now holds a

beautiful black, solid

granite bench which

was generously

provided by

Papa Doug

Manchester

& Family as a

tribute to honor

and preserve

the legacy of all

veterans. The

Association

plans to place

3 more black

granite benches

on each

quadrant of the

base.

New Veterans

Honor Walls

The mission of the Mt. Soledad

National Veterans Memorial is to

serve as a beacon of freedom

that reminds Americans and our

foreign visitors of the sacrifices

our veterans have made since the

founding of our nation.

Mt. Soledad

The Mt. Soledad Memorial

Association, which owns and

Veteran Honor Plaque

operates the memorial, focuses

educating the public about the critical role of our military

and contributions of those who have served in helping

preserve the values and ideals embraced and treasured

by the people of the United States of America.

Beginning in 2000 the Veterans

Honor Wall concept came to life

at the Memorial. On Memorial

Day 2001, Phase I consisting of 6

walls and 4 benches with spaces

for 3,200 plaques was unveiled.

The overwhelming desire to have

a veteran honor plaque was

tremendous initiated the design

and construction of Phase II and on

May 15th 2013, 5 new walls were

dedicated, providing the capacity of

2,200 more plaques.

Today, we near Phase II

capacity with a limited

amount of plaque spaces

remaining. Remaining true

to their mission of Honoring

and Preserving the Legacy

of our Veterans, they have

committed to building 5

new walls that will provide

the surface to place 2,000

more plaques.

Please help the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association to create

the opportunity to honor 2,000 more veterans and their

families. To learn more on how you can help or to obtain

a plaque, please visit www.soledadmemorial.org.

Education

EJE Academies

DELIVERING EDUCATIONAL EQUITY IN EL CAJON

Nestled in the heart of

El Cajon is a charter school that is one of the best kept

secrets in the San Diego region. The Excellence in Justice

and Education Academies, better known as the EJE

Academies (EJEA), serves 800 transitional kindergarten

to eighth grade students with quality dual-language

education in English and Spanish. Ninety-two percent

of EJEA students are students of color, 90 percent are

Latino/a, and 82 percent qualify for the free lunch program.

They have a 600-student waiting list!

EJEA is the educational institution that could; having

earned awards as the Charter School of the Year for

Southern California, as a Gold Ribbon School and

Distinguished School from the California Department of

Education, and as one of America’s Best Urban Schools

by the National Center for Urban School Transformation at

San Diego State University.

Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and

Colleges, the secret to EJEA’s success is its founding in

social justice and educational equity. “We are the most

mission-committed people that you will ever meet,”

shares Eva Pacheco, the former elementary and middle

school teacher from

Guanajuato, Mexico,

who led a group of

parents, teachers,

and education

activists to start

EJE Academies.

Facing the closure

of her community’s

elementary school in 2004, Eva and a group of parent

advocates successfully petitioned the Cajon Valley Unified

School District to open EJEA, first as an elementary

academy, later adding a middle academy and transitional

kindergarten. Eventually the school grew to include a

community health clinic, and a college and career alumni

center. “I started as a mom volunteer Spanish teacher at

my kids’ school,” Eva shared with GB Magazine, “and I

just kept helping other kids who were smart and talented

in Spanish and just needed dual language education to

adapt, achieve and thrive.”

Eva recently retired as the Executive Director of EJEA and

now spends her time raising funds to modernize EJEA’s

campus, built in the 1960s. “It is a $35 million project, and

we are thankful to have already received $18.5 million from

the State of California.” With the determination of a teacher

of 30 years, she asserted, “There can be no better legacy

than to build a modern campus where students, teachers,

and parents can continue the mission and the magic of

EJEA, so many future generations of EJEA families will

have the opportunity for a brighter future.”

Healthcare

For more than 11 years, SBHIS

Insurance Services has been

dedicated to serving and

empowering beneficiaries by helping

them find the Medicare plan options that

best suit their needs. One of their clients,

Lidia S. Martinez (LHD ’22, SDSU)

and Dr. Ted Martinez, Jr. share their

experience with the Medicare-focused insurance agency.

How did you choose SBHIS?

In 2019, Ted kept getting letters from Medicare that

were confusing and contradictory to our records. We

tried calling and kept getting transferred to all the wrong

departments. Because we did not pay the money they

claimed we owed (without explanation), they cancelled

Ted’s insurance. That was a painful experience. We had

heard Pat Salas make a presentation that explained the

services offered by SBHIS. So, we reached out for help.

Within minutes, Pat responded and invited us to come

see her right away.

How long had you been trying to fix your issue?

Before reaching out to SBHIS, we had been trying to get

answers and explanations to letters we were receiving

for months! Nobody should have to experience this

frustration and fear of losing their healthcare. We cannot

help to wonder how people with limited knowledge of

the system, limited knowledge of their health benefits,

limited knowledge of the English language, can navigate

this complex system.

Was SBHIS able to help you?

YES! We are forever thankful to Pat and her team for

providing these services, but mostly, for treating us with

respect, dignity and compassion. They are experienced

and smart professionals who know how to navigate the

Lidia S. and Ted

Martinez Jr.

system and keep us from getting sick over the

gross inefficiencies we have had to deal with by

going directly to Medicare.

Would you recommend SBHIS to others?

We keep telling people about SBHIS because

we know we are not the only ones dealing with

these issues. People eligible for Medicare need

to have compassionate advocates who can help

them understand this unnecessarily cumbersome

system. Compassion and patience are what

you can expect from SBHIS. Pat and her team

definitely exceeded our expectations, and we

highly recommend them.

20 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

www.sbhis.net

Por más de 11 años SBHIS Insurance

Services se ha dedicado a servir

y empoderar a sus beneficiarios,

ayudándolos a encontrar las opciones

de planes de Medicare que mejor se

adapten a sus necesidades. Una de sus

clientes, Lidia Martinez (LHD ‘22, SDSU)

Habíamos escuchado a

No podemos

directamente a Medicare.

recomendables.

Fundraiser

15th Annual Hallo-

Wine Fall Festival

HOME START’S SIGNATURE FUNDRAISER

Jocelyn

San Diego non-profit Home Start (www.home-start.org)

is thrilled to celebrate its 50th anniversary year in 2022.

For five decades, its caring staff have devoted themselves

to preventing child abuse by strengthening families and

serving local communities. Home Start’s seven core

programs play a crucial role in empowering local children

and families to escape the cycles of poverty, abuse,

homelessness and neglect.

In April of this year, the agency purchased its 5th multi-unit residential

property to provide housing and wraparound supportive services to

survivors of domestic violence. The generous support of local individuals

and caring foundation partners made this possible. The first young women

and children in the program have just moved into their new homes!

26 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

Here is one of their stories.

“Jocelyn” had finally escaped an abusive relationship and was

trying to stay safe by sleeping in her trailer near an East County

industrial park. She sought local resources and connected to

Home Start’s Homeless Outreach Specialist Jojo. He immediately

began to seek out housing options. Just when things were

looking up, Jocelyn’s abuser found her and burned down her

trailer. Thankfully, she escaped again. Jojo and Home Start staff

quickly provided Jocelyn with an emergency motel voucher to

help her get off the streets. Then, a week later, the agency moved

this brave young woman into her own studio apartment in their

newly-purchased property. She will continue working alongside

her Home Start Case Manager on creating a plan for employment

and achieving steps for her long-term safety / self-sufficiency.

As the housing crisis, inflation and domestic violence

continue to plague the most underserved neighbors in

our community, please help more youth, children and

families by participating in Home Start’s 15th Annual

Hallo-Wine Fall Festival. Spend the afternoon outdoors

at the Historic Burnham House in Balboa Park on

Saturday, October 22nd in recognition of National

Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Enjoy a delicious

selection of food samples along with boutique wines,

handcrafted beers, local spirts, live music, a special

update on Home Start programs and a silent auction.

Another Home Start client will also share their story

of how caring partners like you have helped them. All

proceeds support local children and families.

To attend the 15th Annual Hallow-Wine Fall Festival,

please visit www.hallowine.org. Joining together, we

can achieve Home Start’s vision for every child in San

Diego to have a safe, stable and nurturing home.

Education

Southwestern

College Foundation

THE BETTER SOUTHWESTERN IS, THE BETTER OUR ENTIRE REGION IS

Everyone has been touched by community

college whether they are aware of it or not.

Have you needed medical attention?

The paramedic, dental technician or

nurse likely received their education

at a community college. Had your car

repaired? The mechanic likely studied

at a community college. Enjoyed a

musical or theater performance? The actors, singers, and

dancers likely started their training at a community college.

Spent any time at all in Chula Vista? The mayor went to

community college!

As the only establishment of higher learning in the south

region of San Diego County, Southwestern Community

College is a vital pillar within the community and a

key institution focused on educating, training, and

providing opportunities to our local workforce and future

generations. It is not an overstatement to say that the

better Southwestern is, the better our entire region is.

Some of the difficulties that institutions like Southwestern

face are due to the many misconceptions surrounding

community colleges, one of the most prevalent of these

being that they are totally free to students thanks to

state funding. While it is true that for qualifying students’

34 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

enrollment fees

are waived, the

total amount of

waived fees is

roughly $1,288.00

(for full-time

students) which

is only a small

portion of the

$15,364.00

that the state

of California

estimates

students living

at home will

need in order to

be successful.

For students living

on their own, this

number climbs to

nearly $30,000.00

(conservative for San

Diego County).

With a student

population where

roughly 80% have

some level of elevated

need or financial

insecurity, the need for

additional support and

resources is high, but

the good news is that

there is so much that

can be done to help

prepare our students

and strengthen our

community.

In a groundbreaking

move, Southwestern

College recently forgave $3.5 million in outstanding

tuition and enrollment fee debt and is currently working

on the development of student housing opportunities.

The College’s Foundation also oversees a variety of

scholarship opportunities as well as the donor-funded

Cares Emergency Grant Program, which provides

students with

one-time

monetary support

to overcome

an unexpected

hardship and

help them remain

enrolled.

It is through the

larger community

that Southwestern

College and the

Southwestern

College

Foundation have

found the magic

and synergy that

truly creates student

success. Students

originally living in

their cars have

moved on to 4-year

universities, students

that were previously

incarcerated have

found meaning and

direction through their

studies, and nearly

all Southwestern’s

students have found

the inspiration to

exceed their own

expectations thanks

to the additional

support given by their

community.

If you are interested in

being that source of

inspiration and the key

ingredient in Southwestern College student success, you are

invited to visit www.swccd.edu/foundation where you

can learn how to get involved and join the Southwestern

College Family.

The better Southwestern is, the better our entire region is,

and you have the opportunity to be part of that success.

San Diego Gas & Electric Leadership

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF

SKILLED ARBORISTS IS PRICELESS

At San Diego Gas & Electric, our employees feel a strong sense of purpose beyond delivering

clean, safe and reliable energy services to our 3.7 million customers. As part of our commitment

to the communities we serve, we support a variety of initiatives through shareholder charitable

contributions, employee giving programs and volunteerism. Our philanthropic priorities include

climate action, emergency preparedness and safety, economic prosperity, and K-12 STEM

education. Many of our initiatives focus on advancing racial and gender equity in alignment with our company

value to “champion people.” We understand that in order for our region to

thrive and become more sustainable, it is important for all of us to do our

part to ensure no one is left behind.

Partnerships are priceless

and San Diego Gas

& Electric’s (SDG&E)

partnership with San

Diego College of

Continuing Education

(SDCCE) is no different.

In an effort to help lowincome

San Diegans take part in a tuitionfree

program that allows them to learn the

unique skills to become a part of the Arborist

industry SDG&E has awarded a three-year

grant to the SDCCE Foundation’s Employee

Training Institute (ETi). The Arborist/Utility

Line Clearance Training is a 200-hour,

5-week training and allows graduates

to become a skilled arborist supporting

California in preventing fires by clearing trees

away from utility equipment and lines.

“This marks a historic partnership between

the SDCCE Foundation and SDG&E. The

SDCCE is proud to be a part of the fight

against climate change and keeping San

Diego safe,” said SDCCE Chancellor Carlos

O. Cortez, Ph.D.

ArboristUtility Line

Clearance Training

The Arborist/Utility Line Clearance Training began at the SDCCE

Foundation’s ETi April 2021, and since then twenty-four trainees

completed the program. Every graduate from the first cohort

dispatched to fight the Dixie Fire in July 2021, which burned 963,309

42 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

acres. The second

cohort of graduates

were offered jobs in the

arboriculture industry

and were recognized by

Congressman Juan Vargas.

The Arborist/Utility Line Clearance Training designed

by industry experts, gives entry-level students

education in First Aid/CPR, OSHA 10, flagger

training, fire safety prevention, chippers, chainsaw

usage, ropes, knots, and climbing. The goal of the

program is to give graduates confidence and allow

them to leave the program prepared to be safe and

productive workers on a line clearance crew.

“The SDCCE Foundation is

excited to bring awareness

to the arboriculture industry

and as a result of SDG&E’s

generous training funding,

low-income San Diegans

are entering a high demand,

high wage career path.” said Laurie Coskey, Ed.D., SDCCE

Foundation’s CEO.

SDG&E’s support permits the development and

scholarships of the Program beginning April 2022 through

July 2025. Funding from SDG&E makes the SDCCE

Foundation’s ETi the first California Community College

to offer a partnership between a college and a utility to

support curriculum as a line-item in the company’s fire risk

mitigation budget, confirmed Caron Lieber, ETi Manager.

The Arborist/Utility Line Clearance Training is open for applications with particular

outreach to low-income communities. Prospective trainees can apply now at

www.employeetraininginstitutesandiego.com/Category/arboriculture.

Gala

Wine & Wishes Gala

WELCOME TO JOY!

Ana’s Wish to

be an Artist

Make-A-Wish San Diego creates

life-changing wishes for children

with critical illnesses in San

Diego and Imperial Counties.

Since its inception in 1983, the

San Diego chapter has granted

more than 4,800 wishes to

children in the community. At

Make-A-Wish, the goal is simple: provide children and

their families with a life-affirming experience in the midst of

a very challenging time.

From a young age, wish kid Ana’s artistic talent was

evident. For that reason, it came to no surprise when she

wished to become an artist. Like Ana, many wish kids

use their imagination to cope with the realities of a critical

illness, and their wish experience allows them to keep

dreaming and focus on a positive future. A wish can shift

the focus from hospital stays, treatments and surgeries. It

opens up a world of possibilities - where the exciting

anticipation of a wish-come-true helps wish kids believe in

better days ahead.

The organization invites you to delve into a world of

wonder and join Make-A-Wish San Diego for their posh

and playful WINE & WISHES Gala. This year’s black-tie

event will be at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar on Thursday,

September 22, 2022. For one night, break free from a

world consumed with schedules and to-do lists in favor of

remembering the childlike wonder that embraces joy in the

moment.

During the evening, guests will enjoy culinary delights

and a limited selection of fine wines from California

winemakers thanks to their event partner Meritage Wine

Market. The evening will also include a hosted bar, seated

dinner, live entertainment, dance floor and complimentary

valet - all to benefit Make-A-Wish San Diego. Help bring

every eligible child’s wish to life, because every child

deserves a childhood.

Make-A-Wish

San Diego

logra que los

deseos de

niños con

críticas

pertenecientes

a los condados de San Diego e

Imperial, se vuelvan realidad. Desde

sus inicios en 1983, la sede de San

Diego ha logrado cumplir con más

de 4,800 deseos de niños de la

comunidad. El objetivo de Make-A

Wish es simple: brindarles a los niños

y sus familias una experiencia de

vida gratificante en medio de tantos

desafíos.

Desde temprana edad el talento

artístico de Ana era evidente, por lo

que no sorprendió cuando planteó su

Wine & Wishes

californianas gracias a Meritage

Wine Market, socio del evento.

También habrá barra de tragos,

cena, entretenimiento en vivo,

baile, servicio de valet, y todo a

beneficio de Make-A-Wish San

Diego. Ayúdenos a hacer realidad

el deseo de los niños de Make-

A-Wish, porque todos los niños

Southwest Airlines’

Servant’s Heart-

When Southwest Airlines first began in

1967, The Golden Rule, “Treat others as you would

like to be treated,” was at the forefront of our Culture

and business strategy. At Southwest Airlines, we

make it their mission to follow The Golden Rule. To do

right by others, you should understand other people’s

perspectives and know more about their story. We

invite you to learn more about

MAAC and their extraordinary

programs like Head Start.

Now, more than ever, their programs and services

are needed to assure that all San

Diegans can create the lives they

want… and deserve.

Kelly Knox

Sr. Community Outreach Manager

Southwest Airlines

On a typical

weekday

morning,

Kenia Brito

drops off

her threeyear-old

son at

MAAC’s Head Start program in

San Marcos before heading to a

meeting with her career coach in

the Next Level Parent Workforce

Development Program. Kenia is

able to make progress toward her

educational goal of becoming a

phlebotomist, knowing that her son

is being well-cared for at MAAC.

Kenia has been familiar with MAAC

since her two oldest children

attended the Head Start program

years ago. When she had her third

child, she also enrolled him at

MAAC because she knew her son,

who has a developmental disability,

would receive quality care and

education. “The teachers were

very attentive and communicative

regarding my son’s needs. I appreciated their patience while working with him. I

can trust that my child is safe and in a nurturing environment while I am working

or attending classes,” Kenia shared with GB Magazine.

Many families served through MAAC’s Child Development Program are considered

low-income. The parents in these households often place their education and

career aspirations on the back burner to meet their families’ immediate needs.

Educational programs that can lead to better employment prospects may also be

time-intensive or cost-prohibitive for a family member to attend.

MAAC

established

the Next Level

Parent Workforce

Development

Program to

provide families

- like Kenia’s

-free access to

education

and career

pathways

that can lead

to greater

economic

mobility. The

program

follows

MAAC’s twogeneration

approach,

which

provides

services

to enrolled

children and

their families

to ensure the

entire family

unit is set up

for success.

Participants

in Next Level must complete a two-day course to

assess their skills and interests, map out a potential

career path, research education programs and learn

time management skills. They also meet one-onone

with a career coach to develop a personalized

education and career plan, which includes identifying

and addressing barriers that might impede their success,

such as childcare, transportation or finances. MAAC then

supports participants with career placement services

through resume building, connections with partnered

employers and work-readiness skills. Every participant

enrolled in the Next Level program receives continuous

support until they are successfully employed.

Next Level Parent –

On-the-Job Training

Next Level Parent – Grace Major

“I have always

been interested

in phlebotomy.

When I heard

about Next

Level and its

healthcare

pathway, I

thought it would

be a great

opportunity to

finally make a

career change

so I could

better provide

for my family,”

shared Kenia.

“Without this

program, I

would not

have been

able to afford

the training

and education

to reach my

goal; it has

opened up

new doors

for my family

and me,”

she shared.

Less than

six months

after she enrolled in the program, Kenia finished the

required classes and is currently preparing to test for her

phlebotomy certification.

Thanks to Southwest Airlines and its longstanding

partnership with MAAC, the lives of families like Kenia’s

are being transforming across San Diego County.

Youth

Episcopal

Community Services

IMPROVING CHILDREN’S WELL-BEING

CEO Elizabeth Fitzsimons with Edgar Sierra, Alethea

Arguilez, Willough Jenkins and Erin Hogeboom

As we strive to create a sense

of normalcy in the wake of the

COVID-19 pandemic, a major

concern for Episcopal Community

Services (ECS) is the well-being

of the region’s children. The

loneliness, loss and gaps in

learning, socialization and physical

and behavioral health care are resulting in long-term

challenges – some we may not fully understand yet.

ECS is uniquely positioned to help improve the care

San Diego’s children receive by increasing access to

affordable early childhood education through its Head

Start programs and strengthening the mental and

behavioral health of children and their families through

Para Las Familias.

“ECS has seen the impacts of the pandemic on

children firsthand – stress, isolation, education gaps

and personal loss,” Elizabeth Fitzsimons, CEO of

ECS shared with GB Magazine. “The inequalities

which existed before the pandemic have only been

exacerbated as shutdowns unfolded and children’s

primary care providers were under magnitudes

of stress. We now face an even larger chasm in

longstanding inequalities for our youngest community

members.”

ECS Head

Start Class

This summer, ECS facilitated a discussion with key

leaders - including Alethea Arguilez, M.A., with First 5

San Diego; Willough Jenkins, M.D., with Rady Children’s

Hospital-San Diego and UC San Diego; and Erin

Hogeboom with San Diego for Every Child – to explore

how children are faring in their post-pandemic reality.

“The kids are not all right,” said Hogeboom. “The

economic inequities that already existed for our

disenfranchised communities have been heightened,

and families continue to struggle to make ends meet.”

“By age three, a child’s brain has developed to 80%. By

age five, their brain is developed 90%,” shared Arguilez.

“There is a finite window of opportunity to support our

little ones and we cannot assume they are resilient

enough to heal on their own. Children need proactive

support and resources to overcome the challenges of

the past two years.”

ECS has 17 locations throughout southern San Diego

County for Head Start and early Head Start, which

increases access to early childhood education and

development services for more than 2,000 young

children in income-eligible families.

The organization’s bicultural and bilingual Para Las

Familias serves 250 children and their families to

strengthen the foundational bonds that will set kids

on track for healthy relationships, self-confidence and

success in school and beyond. San Diego Foundation

and the Dr. Suess Foundation recently awarded ECS

a $70,000 grant to support Para Las Familias and

help ECS continue to provide these critical mental and

behavioral health services at no-cost.

“Being able to help children from the earliest age will

allow them to reach their unlimited potential,” shared

Fitzsimons. “For every child we serve, we see the

immediate impact in their family. From there, the ripple

effect is exponential. As we see an increasing demand

for our programs, we are seeking new partnerships and

opportunities to deepen our impact and allow us to help

even more children in our community.”

THE WILDCOAST

BAJA BASH

CELEBRATING WILD BAJA

BY SERGE DEDINA, PHD

I

met marine biologist and renowned author

Wallace “J.” Nichols while living in Baja in the

early 1990s as part of my doctoral research

on gray whales. After receiving my doctorate,

I worked for The Nature Conservancy

establishing national parks along the Sea of

Cortez coastline of the Baja California peninsula.

In 2000, J. and I co-founded WILDCOAST

to help preserve coastal and marine ecosystems

and endangered wildlife along the Baja California

Peninsula. We sought to protect gray whale lagoons

against mega-developments and further the plight of

the region’s sea turtles which had nearly disappeared.

We immediately started a campaign to halt the blackmarket

trade of turtle eggs and meat in Baja, and

helped to preserve Laguna San Ignacio, a pristine gray

whale breeding lagoon.

Eastern Pacific

Green Sea Turtle

Coastal Wetlands

Since 2000, WILDCOAST has helped protect 38 million

acres of globally important coastal and marine ecosystems

including gray whale breeding lagoons, sea turtle nesting

Our trash boom in Los Laureles, a tributary canyon of the

installations next year.

beaches, coral reefs teeming with fish, leopard shark

nurseries and the wildest coastlines in North America.

Eastern Pacific green sea turtles can be seen throughout

the seagrass meadows of Baja California and the Sea of

Cortez. Additionally, we are conserving coastal wetlands

known as blue carbon ecosystems, such as salt marsh,

seagrass meadows mangroves, and coral reefs that

naturally sequester large amounts of atmospheric carbon

and help communities adapt to climate change.

With 10 conservation programs in the U.S. and Mexico,

our strategy is robust yet simple. We establish and

manage protected areas, protect and restore blue

carbon ecosystems, and engage communities in

conservation stewardship.

The coastal treasures that we conserve support an

abundance of wildlife and are iconic recreation sites

for people to enjoy. WILDCOAST has purchased and

protected over 50 miles of pristine, untouched coastline

in the Los Cirios area of central Baja. We are striving to

protect nature for generations to come.

I am so pleased for the return of our annual Baja Bash

fundraiser on Saturday October 1st, highlighting the need

to protect Baja’s iconic coastline and wildlife, and the

importance to conserve the majestic and mighty oceans,

and address climate change in a way that brings us

together in common purpose.

We would not be able to carry out

our mission without your support.

And that is why your participation in

the Baja Bash is so critical. For more

Art

Breathing Room

NEW INSTALLATION AT THE NEW CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

The New Children’s

Museum is

encouraging children

and families to

“pause and take

a deep breath.”

The arts-based

children’s museum

commissioned

Oceanside-based

artist Michelle

Montjoy for Breathing Room, a new installation that

provides a calm respite in an otherwise highly interactive

environment.

Breathing Room is a quiet space on the Museum’s main

level that welcomes visitors with calming blue, grey and

white colors and hanging textile sculptures that gently

move up and down. The rhythmic movement of the

soft, hand-knitted elements replicates breathing cycles,

allowing visitors to slow down and relax.

“It has been deeply moving to work with The New

Children’s Museum to make this warm and welcoming

space,” said artist Michelle Montjoy, who has been at

the Museum regularly since the initial opening in June.

“With the mesmerizing movement overhead, soothing

colors, soft pillows and comfortable spots to cozy up in,

Breathing Room gives visitors a chance to lie on their

backs, take a pause and just breathe.”

As part of the creative process, Montjoy and the Museum

have been observing how visitors engage in the space

which has led to modifications and improvements as well

64 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

as helped inform

the elements for

the next phase.

In addition

to dimmed

lighting and a

soft oversized

crocheted rug, the

artist has made

numerous Hugs –

oversized, stuffed

sweater forms

with weighted

arms that offer

a comforting

embrace. Wallhung

chance to be held,

while Hugs on the

floor offer an opportunity to lie down and look up at the

moving sculptures overhead.

Montjoy also considered that some children might want

a small space and created Pods - organic knitted forms

one can climb into, read a book or take a calming break.

Additional opportunities for calming comfort and a sense

of security include sound-cancelling headphones, soft

flooring, a variety of seating and a basket of children’s

books with calming themes.

“The New Children’s Museum has an opportunity as the

world evolves post-pandemic to further establish itself

as a place of creativity, play and comprehensive learning

for all audiences,” Elizabeth Yang-Hellewell, Executive

Director and CEO shared with GB Magazine. “We are

seeing a much greater need for safe, welcoming, sensory

supportive spaces for children and adults. Breathing

Room is an important installation that supports a diverse

array of sensory preferences and needs.”

To complement the intent of Breathing Room, the

Museum is creating a “Sensory Guide” with Xenia

Casa Familiar

50 YEARS OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY

Founded in 1973, Casa Familiar, a

community-based nonprofit, will

be celebrating 50 years of serving

residents in the communities of

San Ysidro and South San Diego

County. Led by an all-women of color

leadership team, Casa’s history stands

on the shoulders of strong women and

a foundational understanding of the unique challenges

faced by residents of the border region. Casa’s

campuses of services are located in San Ysidro, home

to the busiest port of entry along the U.S.-Mexico

Border (a staggering 106 million individuals and 48

million cars and trucks cross this border every year!).

The development and challenges of this vibrant region

are intricately woven into its proximity to the U.S.-

Mexico border.

Casa is dedicated to humanizing our border

communities by challenging narratives that speak about

the border as simply a place with a fence or a wall

and how to protect it. Casa’s community engagement

uplifts voices of the border community as an advocate

for traditionally underrepresented and marginalized

community members. They work to highlight San

Ysidro as a vibrant community that embraces its binational

culture, heritage, and people.

Casa offers an integrated approach of over 40 services

aimed at a holistic approach to challenges which

includes bilingual and culturally relevant programming

through direct social services, youth programs and

support, workforce development, a belief in everyone’s

right to safe and sustainable communities through

environmental justice advocacy, senior services and

support, and understanding that building community is

more than building “affordable units”. Casa believes that

access to programs from arts and culture spaces to

social and financial services and building connections

with neighbors is key to creating a thriving community.

Casa Familiar invites you to help them build the next 50

years of transformation and change.

Youth

Just In Time’s

20 Years of Impact

FROM GIFT BASKETS TO LIFE CHANGING CHOICES

Tony Hsu (Center), Diane

Just in Time

for Foster

Youth (JIT)

is entering

its 20th

Anniversary

Year with

a renewed

focus on building a

responsive, reliable,

real community for

all youth impacted

by foster care from

age 18-26 and

beyond! Little did

the co-founders

realize, twenty

years ago, that JIT

would grow into

an organization

serving 1,600 young adults in San Diego and building a

Community of 100,000 youth nationwide.

It all started in 2002 when child advocacy attorney

Jeanette Day recruited First American Title representative

Diane Cox and Founding Partner of San Diego Social

Venture Partners Louarn Sorkin to create holiday gift

baskets for youth who had exited from foster care with

little or no family support. Moved by the spirit of these

courageous youth who were starting out adulthood in

subsidized housing with little or no furniture, this small

group of San Diego women led the effort to recruit and

organize volunteers to collect and provide furnishings for

their bare apartments.

Within a few

years, it was

apparent that

young adults

needed much

more than

apartment

furnishings

to become

confident,

capable and

connected

adults. JIT

Board President

for five years,

Kathryn

Vaughn, the

Managing

Partner of

the Law

Offices of Vaughn and Vaughn, launched services to

empower achievement at college and in the trades. Tony

Hsu, Founder/Chief Investment Officer, Alethea Capital

Management, LLC, worked with Kathryn to establish

nonprofit status and served as JIT’s first Board Treasurer

while Jenny Hsu served as JIT’s volunteer accountant.

Tony Hsu: It was hard to imagine Just in Time growing to its

current size 20 years ago when we were running things off an Excel

spreadsheet and managing donations in the back of minivans.

Additional Founding Members worked tirelessly to grow

JIT and to serve thousands of young adults who have

overcome great odds and are thriving adults, including

Kuity CEO Elizabeth Dreicer, Alan Sorkin, Don Vaughn

and the entire Vaughn/Maggiora family, Lynne and Steve

Doyle, Terry Satin, Phil Baker, Patricia Benesh, Lisa

Louarn Sorkin: When we started Just in Time, I

had no idea that our services would become

this diversified and truly impactful for our youth.

Jeanette Day: We grew so fast because

the need was so great for these kids. It is

a huge undertaking to start a nonprofit and

get a solid board together to manage it.

Kathryn Vaughn (second to

Kathryn Vaughn: Over the years, I have attended

many JIT students’ college graduations from SDSU

to Cuyamaca to USC. Education is something that

no one can ever take away from you.

we empower other cities and states to benefit from

our community-based model. Every young person

Walking To End

Alzheimer’s

A

healthy

walk in the bright sunshine on a beautiful fall morning with

thousands of people who “get you,” all for an important cause. This is

the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

The Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter, serving the

southern-most part of California from the Pacific Ocean to the Arizona

border, is organizing three walks this year, September 24 in North

County San Diego at Kit Carson Park in Escondido, October 8 in San

Diego at NTC Park Liberty Station on Point Loma, and November 19 in

Imperial County at Bucklin Park in El Centro.

76 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

Alzheimer’s disease afflicts more

than 65,000 people in San

Diego County alone, with more

than twice that number serving

as unpaid caregivers, usually

family members or friends. Two

thirds of those with the disease

are women, with a prevalence

rate twice as high in the Black

community, and one and a half

times as high in the Hispanic

community.

The Walk experience is an

energizing, emotional morning

where participants meet old

friends, bond with new ones and

find comfort in discovering they

are not alone on their Alzheimer’s

or caregiver journeys.

“Participants say that

being a part of the

Walk is their way of

doing something to

honor all those living

with Alzheimer’s and

to help put an end

to this progressive

disease, so that

others do not have

to experience the

loss of a loved one,

not to mention the

struggles while they

are still alive,” Joanie

Ewing, Director of

Development for the

chapter shared with

GB Magazine.

Dr. Rema Raman,

Professor of

Neurology at Keck School of Medicine of USC,

Director of Biostatistics at the USC Alzheimer’s

Therapeutic Research Institute, and Board

Chair of the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/

Imperial Chapter, adds that “it is

a way for the whole community,

including those of us dedicated to

research, to come together with

the common focus of finding a

cure for Alzheimer’s.”

Janet Hamada Kelley, the

chapter’s Executive Director,

points out that “money raised

goes toward research for a

cure, as well as educating the

public through programs and

support groups for those we

serve. Every step brings us closer

to achieving the Alzheimer’s

Association’s vision of a world

without Alzheimer’s and all other

dementia.”

Participants may

join an existing

team, or start

their own team by

recruiting neighbors,

friends and family.

Each morning’s

Walk begins

with inspirational

speakers, music and

a flower ceremony

where participants

are given flowers,

with the colors

representing the

reason they walk;

as someone

with Alzheimer’s,

caring for another

with Alzheimer’s,

someone who has

lost a loved one

to Alzheimer’s, or those simply there to support

research for a cure.

“If I could do it,

you can do it too!”

SAN YSIDRO HEALTH’S FOUNDING MOTHER, CARMEN

MARTINEZ, CELEBRATES 99TH BIRTHDAY & A RICH LEGACY

OF ACTIVISM STILL FELT TODAY

Strength, wisdom,

perseverance,

courage and

love for the

community are

some words

that only scratch

the surface in

describing San

Ysidro Health’s

remaining

founding mother, Carmen Martinez. Born on September

25, 1923, she is a mother to her 7 children, a

grandmother and a great grandmother to many more. This

fearless leader still inspires today.

Carmen Martinez is one of seven founding mothers whose

journey in search of medical services for their children

gave birth to San Ysidro Health (SYHealth). These special

women established “el Club de las Madres” and in 1969

opened the “Casita,” a little white house with only 2

rooms and 4 dedicated volunteers – the very first clinic in

San Ysidro. At the time, health care services in the area

were scarce and nearly unattainable. As the demand for

78 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

services grew,

so did the

organization.

Mrs. Martinez

was involved

in the hiring

process for the

first physicians

to ensure

they were

committed to

SYHealth’s

mission.

Over 5

decades,

SYHealth

has evolved

from a small

clinic located along the border into one of San Diego’s

largest and most well-respected nonprofit community

health providers. Today the organization has 50 clinic and

program sites throughout the county, providing innovative

medical, dental, behavioral health and specialty care

Education

BLCI Graduation

BLCI Graduates

For more than 26 years, Barrio Logan

College Institute (BLCI) has been

serving students and their families in our

communities in an effort to break the

cycle of poverty by preparing underserved

students to be the first in their families

to go to college through after school

programs that begin in third grade.

BLCI’s programs focus on the ABCs of College Success:

Academics, Behavior, and College and Career Readiness.

BLCI’s elementary students primarily focus on the “A” of

the ABC’s – Academics. Students work alongside tutors

and the elementary school specialist to build a solid

academic foundation. In middle school, they shift to “B” –

Behavior. This pivotal time allows students to learn more

about themselves and their community.

In high school, students begin to focus on college

applications and examine the “C” – College and Career

Readiness. Specialists work with the students to ensure

they have what they need to complete admission

requirements, write strong admission essays and have

a general idea about what they may want to study or do

for a career. After spring break of their 11th grade year,

students transition to the College Success Program, where

they receive increased individual supports as they submit

their college applications and apply for scholarships.

While 95% of the families that they serve are considered

low-income, their only pre-requisite to be admitted to the

program is that the student is a first-generation college

student. Parents also are required to “volunteer” 30 hours

per year with BLCI, with opportunities ranging from actual

volunteer assistance, to participating in workshops to help

them learn new skills.

BLCI is proud to announce another successful year! Their

Class of 2022 has recently graduated, and 100% will be

going to college this fall.

BLCI STUDENTS WILL BE HEADING TO CSU SAN MARCOS,

UC SAN DIEGO, GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY, CSU LOS

ANGELES, CAL POLY SAN LUIS OBISPO, SAN DIEGO STATE

UNIVERSITY, SAN DIEGO MESA COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF

SAN DIEGO, CSU FULLERTON, ST. MARY’S COLLEGE OF

diferentes becas.

Aunque el 95%

asistidas

pertenecen al

grupo de bajos

BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES MEAL BY MEAL

BY: NICHOLE NAOUM

When people think

of charitable food

programs, what

often comes to

mind is donated

cereal, canned

goods or other

non-perishables.

However, food

banks have a

presence in the

community that

delivers much more

than meals. As the

new CEO of The

Jacobs & Cushman

San Diego Food

Bank, Casey Castillo

can attest these

initiatives give people

the opportunity to

make a real impact

and help break the

cycle of poverty.

What is your history

with the Jacobs &

Cushman San Diego Food Bank?

I have been with the San Diego Food Bank for more

than 14 years, mostly serving as its CFO and VP of

Administration – with responsibilities over finance,

Casey Castillo

San Diego Food

Bank Warehouse

accounting,

human

resources, IT

and facilities. I

also served as

the interim CEO

three times over

that time span,

which afforded

me the chance

to supervise all

departments

and Food Bank

activities. I am

confident that

this makes me

well-equipped to

lead this amazing

organization into the

future.

What does your

new role as CEO

entail?

Ultimately, I will be

working with the

board of directors to

ensure that the Food

Bank is fulfilling its

mission to provide

nutritious meals

to people in need,

advocate for the hungry, and educate the public about

hunger-related issues. This will be accomplished by setting

a clear vision for the organization and by pursuing our

collective goals.

86 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

How does the Jacobs

& Cushman San Diego

Food Bank support San

Diego community?

For 45 years, we

have served as an

independent, progressive

leader in the area of

hunger-relief, distributing

millions of pounds of

food through a network

of nearly 500 non-profit

partners countywide. We

San Diego Food Bank

Warehouse in Miramar

have honed our programs to serve the most vulnerable

populations in our region, including seniors living on

fixed incomes, low-income families and children living

in poverty. Focusing on the root causes of poverty, the

San Diego Food Bank has recently added programs and

partnerships that move beyond simply providing food.

We are proud to be a fully-fledged Diaper Bank and we

recently established a Period Supply Program. Currently,

we are serving 500,000 people per month, ensuring that

hungry individuals and families across San Diego County

are able to put food on the table.

How do you stay true

to your mission?

Delivering millions of

pounds of nutritious

food is what we do. But

supplying food alone

is not enough - our

guiding principle must

be to meet the greater

needs of our clients.

For example, we will

create and maintain

programs and services

that recognize that our client base is diverse, with unique

needs and varying obstacles to overcome. We know that

a lack of access to diapers and period products can result

in regular absences from both work and school - inhibiting

a person’s ability to provide for themselves and for their

families. Ultimately, these kinds of unmet needs can

further an individual’s economic challenges and prevent

them from building better futures through education and

consistent employment.

The 40th Annual HGH

Charity Golf Classic!

Special shotgun sendoff

by HGH clients

For 39 years, Home of Guiding Hands

(HGH) has presented the Charity Golf

Classic at various golf courses throughout

San Diego. All proceeds from these

tournaments have gone and continue

to go toward their mission of improving

the lives of the people they serve with

intellectual and developmental disabilities.

HGH has raised well over $900,000 through these golf

tournaments over the years!

This year marks the 40th Annual Charity Golf Classic and

takes place on Friday, September 16th, at the Singing

Hills Golf Resort at Sycuan, on the Willow Glen Golf

Course. Players will enjoy 18 holes of golf while being

treated to unlimited beverages, craft beers and all-youcan-eat

on-course food stations, including Dang Bros

Pizza and ice cream, as well as contests and games out

on the course.

Registration and driving range practice begin at 8:00

am, allowing enough time for players to enjoy their

complimentary breakfast and grab a Bloody Mary before

the special shotgun send-off by HGH clients at 9:00 am.

An awards reception will take place following the end of

the tournament, complete with drinks and charcuterie

meats and cheeses. There are first-place prize winners in

three categories: men’s, women’s and mixed teams. Each

player from a winning team will get a $100 Visa gift card.

In addition to the complimentary breakfast sandwich

and Blood Mary, each player will receive an embroidered

golf towel, iced bottled water and energy drinks on their

carts. A premium package for individuals or teams is also

available which includes all the items in the regular ticket

packages, plus two mulligans and a chance to win a new

Yeti cooler!

This year marks the organization’s 55th anniversary. Since

1967, HGH has been focused on improving the lives of

the clients they serve. Having grown from a 200-bed

campus setting in Lakeside, to now owning and operating

28 residential homes throughout East County, as well as

an office in El Centro.

Today, HGH is one of San Diego County’s largest providers

of support and services for people with developmental and

intellectual disabilities, such as autism, Down’s syndrome,

epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Their programs, including but

not limited to, Early Childhood Development, Independent

Living, Infant Development Assessments, Respite Care,

and Tailored Day Services benefit more than 4,200 infants,

children and adults each year.

HGH believes that individuals thrive when they can direct

their own lives in a setting that provides individualized

attention, opportunities for self-sufficiency and greater

community access and integration.

Fully embracing the philosophy of the whole person, HGH

respects the familial, cultural and environmental influences

that contribute to the unique characteristics and individual

skills of each person. They emphasize a collaborative

partnership and maintain a commitment to the use of

best practices when providing services to persons with

developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Recently, Schubach has partnered with globally-inspired
