The Essence of
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS
HISTORIC CHARM WITH AN ARTISTIC EDGE
There’s something undeniably captivating about small
towns—their quaint streets, friendly faces, and a pace of life
that invites you to savor each moment. Yet, among these
charming locales, Excelsior Springs, Missouri, stands out
as a gem waiting to be discovered. Nestled amid rolling
hills and lush landscapes, this town weaves together a rich
tapestry of history, art, and natural beauty that enchants
visitors from the moment they arrive. Learn more about
what makes this charming little town stand out and earn
the love of locals and visitors alike.
A Walk Through History
Founded in the late 19th century, Excelsior Springs owes
its existence to a serendipitous discovery. In 1880, residents
stumbled upon mineral waters believed to possess healing
properties. Word spread quickly, and the town blossomed
into a renowned health resort, drawing visitors from far and
wide seeking the therapeutic benefits of its springs.
The architectural heritage of Excelsior Springs reflects its
storied past. The Elms Hotel and Spa, established in 1888,
has hosted celebrities and politicians, and has even served
as a retreat for President Harry S. Truman. This iconic
hotel, with its elegant rooms and rejuvenating spa services,
continues to offer guests a blend of historic charm and
modern luxury.
Another cornerstone of the town’s history is the Hall of
Waters, a magnificent Art Deco building constructed in the
1930s. Boasting what was once the world’s longest water
bar, it offered various mineral waters to visitors and now
serves as a Visitor Center and Cultural Museum.
While those landmarks are some of the most widely
known, the town is steeped in history throughout. Walking
through downtown, you’ll encounter beautifully preserved
buildings that echo the elegance of a bygone era, each with
stories etched into their facades.
An Artistic Edge
The historical buildings bring their own artistic aesthetic
to the area, but beyond that, the town is alive with a vibrant
arts scene that adds a dynamic layer to Excelsior Springs’
charm.
Creativity flows as quickly as the natural springs once
did, coming alive with the talent of local and visiting artists
spanning multiple mediums. Drawing inspiration from
the town’s history, landscape, and culture, several murals
decorate the downtown, providing a unique look into the
past while providing fun photo opportunities. Stroll through
the local businesses and galleries to get a glimpse of
stunning local art and even grab a piece to take home with
you! The downtown sidewalks are often dotted with hand
drawn chalk art that adds a fun, whimsical component to
the atmosphere.

town events like the Wine Festival and Waterfest,

variety of musical tastes. Local businesses often feature
musician showcases, ranging from intimate indoor
acoustic sets to singer-songwriters performing
against breathtaking outdoor backdrops.
During those warm summer nights, be sure to
check the schedule for Lyrics on the Lawn, a summer
music series that takes place on the Hall of Waters
Lawn and the Wabash Blues Garden, both family-friendly
favorites.

small town’s past, collecting and preserving its
stories for over 50 years.
Not only is the museum filled with historical
artifacts, but it resides in them as well. The two
adjacent buildings – the 1906 Louis S. Curtiss
bank building and the 1913 Hotel Francis –
have their own place in the city’s past. Many
original features remain, including travertine

pounds, the delicately balanced portal to the
past can be moved with one finger.
The museum features many permanent
displays that showcase the making of Excelsior
Springs, highlighting the unique evolution
from the beginning to now. Each year museum
volunteers also create four to six new displays
to share stories from local history. Browse
through the carefully curated collections that
reflect different time periods, featuring vintage
clothing, home goods, tools and more that
paint a vivid picture of daily life in Excelsior
Springs. On occasion, special traveling exhibits
are hosted, providing even more insight into
the past.
The museum also houses an extensive archive
that preserves personal stories of residents,
businesses, and events that shaped the
town. From historic school yearbooks to historic
newspapers, these materials connect past
generations to the present. It’s a genealogist’s
dream!
For locals, the Excelsior Springs Museum &
Archives is a source of pride. For visitors, it’s
a window into a fascinating story of resilience,
community, and transformation. Whether
you’re a history buff or a curious traveler, this

Ventana Gourmet Grill: A Downtown Staple
Featuring Freshly Made Dishes & Decadent Desserts
Ventana Gourmet Grill, a fine dining establishment in Downtown
Excelsior Springs, has been in business since 2002. It’s owned by
two sisters, Jill Cook-Rickart and Wendy Cook-Baldwin, who had
a vision of bringing a restaurant to the downtown area. That vision
has now become a cornerstone of the Hall of Waters Historic District
for the last 23 years.
Ventana’s menu features a variety of options suitable for any
taste, including prime rib, pastas, steaks, salmon, shrimp, burgers,
salads and more. Among traditional classics are unique offerings
you won’t find anywhere else. Take for instance the Sugar Burger.
A special creation crafted in the kitchen years ago has become a
favorite for guests ready to turn a blind eye to calories! Sandwiched
between two Belgian maple-infused waffles, a freshly cooked burger
is topped with grilled onions, cheddar cheese, bacon and a secret
sugar sauce - what’s not to love?! Ventana’s selection of steaks can
be topped with a delicious red wine sauce, sautéed mushrooms and
onions, or even a balsamic glaze with blue cheese. Freshly made
delicious pastas and homemade lasagna are fan favorites, each dish
served with your choice of garlic toast or the crowd pleasing parmesan
pita bread.
Enjoy your meal with a drink from the full bar, choosing the perfect
glass from their wonderful wine selection to pair with your
entree. For those looking for something other than wine, consider
a cocktail like an old-fashioned or the exclusive Ventana Vacation.
Did someone say dessert? Any Ventana regular will tell you that
you must try the cheesecake! Several flavor options are available
daily, made right in the Ventana kitchen. Many guests stop in just to
grab a slice to go, with favorites being caramel pecan, peanut butter
chocolate, raspberry white chocolate and other seasonal flavors.
The dessert menu also includes bread pudding with a decadent caramel
sauce, brownie sundaes, and apple or triple berry tarts. When
the time comes for your server to ask, “are you ready for dessert?”
at Ventana the answer is always a resounding yes!
The entire menu at Ventana is a must, starting with appetizers
such as the burratachetta all the way to the cheesecake finale -
you’ll want to come back again and again just to try it all!
If you’re looking for the perfect location to host a large group,
family gathering, wedding rehearsal dinner or other event, Ventana
can accommodate you in their private room or space in the main
dining area. Ventana Gourmet Grill invites you to join them Monday-Thursday

Brewed in History, The Atlas
Brings Beer to Broadway
Nearly as old as the town itself, The Atlas
Saloon Brewery has secured itself as both a
vital piece of Excelsior Springs’ history and
its future. The Atlas was built and opened
by Joseph Schlitz Co. in 1894, back when
Broadway was a simple dirt road crossed
by wagon wheels. Now owned by Jim and
Cheri McCullough, The Atlas has been restored
to resemble the glory days. The
decor and atmosphere is a callback to an
old time tavern, the kind that makes you
want to walk through the front doors and
exclaim, “now THIS is a saloon!”
A longtime bar staple of Downtown Excelsior
Springs, The Atlas expanded into the
brewing business in 2018. A brew house on
site is used to craft a variety of beer with
a speciality in German lagers and Belgian
beers. Offerings include: Atlas Brew, using
the old Schlitz recipe from the 1800s; Scottish
Ale, their highest rated beer on Untappd;
Munich Helles, known to be the oldest
beer in the world, first brewed by Munich
monks; plus 4-5 German lagers on tap at all
times. Grains and hops are shipped in from

BUTTERFLY KISSES BOUTIQUE
For boutique owner Carol, the charm
of small-town life and the vibrancy of local
businesses have always held a special
place in her heart. Growing up in Excelsior
Springs, some of her fondest memories
were made in the shops of Downtown, a
place that continues to inspire her passion
for community and connection.
Butterfly Kisses Boutique is much more
than a women’s clothing shop—it’s a heartfelt
tribute to Carol’s youngest daughter,
Brooke. Known for her impeccable sense
of style and bold fashion choices, Brooke
was the family’s “fashion statement girl.”
When Brooke passed away in 2007, Carol
set out to honor her daughter in a way
that celebrated her vibrant spirit. Thus,
the idea for Butterfly Kisses Boutique was
born.
The name “Butterfly Kisses” carries
profound meaning for the Baxter family.
Before Brooke’s passing, brown and
turquoise butterflies would often flutter
around their friends’ pool, creating cherished
moments for the Baxter family.
Since then, these butterflies have become
a powerful symbol of Brooke’s presence,
appearing on her birthday and other
meaningful days as a reminder that she is
always near.
Today, Carol feels fortunate to share her
vision with the community. With the help
of supportive friends, she manages the
boutique while balancing a busy schedule,
cherishing evenings and weekends spent
welcoming customers to the boutique.
The journey of building Butterfly Kisses
Boutique has been both rewarding and
deeply personal, allowing her to combine
her love for fashion with the opportunity
to celebrate Brooke’s memory.
Butterfly Kisses Boutique offers a beautifully
curated selection of women’s fashion
and a few options for men, blending
style, heart, and community. Whether
you’re a long-time local or a first-time visitor
to Excelsior Springs, Carol invites you
to stop in.

The Legacy of the Waters: Revitalizing
Excelsior Springs’ Historic Mineral Wells
Excelsior Springs owes its very existence to
the discovery of natural mineral waters in the
late 1800s—waters believed to possess healing
properties that transformed this small Missouri
town into a bustling health destination. At
the heart of this legacy is the Iron-Manganese
spring, whose renown brought both national
and international recognition, making Excelsior
Springs one of only two sources of commercially
sold iron-manganese water in the United States.
A Miracle in the Making
The story began in 1880 when Travis Mellion,
a local farmer, sought a cure for his daughter’s
scrofula, a form of tuberculosis. Turning to a
spring on A.W. Wyman’s land, Mellion gave
her the reddish-hued water to drink and bathe
in. To his amazement, his daughter recovered,
sparking tales of miraculous healing that quickly
spread. Soon after, another visitor suffering
from rheumatism found relief, further fueling
the spring’s reputation. What began as a trickle
of curious visitors soon turned into a flood of
people seeking the water’s “miracle cures,” of
everything from indigestion to kidney ailments,
and Excelsior Springs grew into what was affectionately
nicknamed “Jug Town”—a reference to
the abundance of jugs visitors used to carry the
mineral water home.
A Thriving Destination
By the early 20th century, the mineral water
industry thrived, and Excelsior Springs established
itself as a health resort destination. With
wells like Siloam and Regent Spring drawing
crowds, the town eventually centralized operations
with the construction of the iconic Hall
of Waters in 1937. This Art Deco masterpiece
became the hub for bottling and distributing the
town’s famed mineral waters.
Revitalizing The Wells Today
Although many wells have remained dormant
for decades, their legacy endures. Today,
local organizations like the Friends of the Wells
Committee (FOW) are spearheading efforts to
restore these historic springs. Recent water
testing has yielded promising results, and plans
are underway to restore Lithia Well No. 1, located
next to Willow Spring Mercantile. Once
restored, this well will offer visitors the chance
to reconnect with the waters that shaped Excelsior
Springs’ history.
Preserving a Unique Heritage
While many of the original well sites are now

marked by gazebos or preserved structures,
their stories remain woven into the fabric of the
community. Visitors can explore locations like
Lithia No. 1, Regent Spring, and Crystal Lithia
Well, each a testament to a bygone era when
people traveled from far and wide to experience
Excelsior Springs’ healing waters. Today,
these historic wells serve as symbols of Excelsior
Springs’ unique heritage. With ongoing
revitalization efforts, they promise to inspire a
new generation to experience the magic of the
waters that once made Excelsior Springs a place
of healing, hope, and discovery.
