Side Trip:

I

was flipping through my favorite church

cookbook for a non-sweet salad recipe

last week. This well-worn, spiral-bound

cookbook was printed in the 1970s, and

three out of four recipes started with a package

of Jello-O.

By the time I eliminated

everything with

gelatin or whipped

cream, I was left with

pasta, pea or threebean

salad. None of

those was quite what I

was looking for.

Searching online, I

found a super simple

option: sliced celery

and fennel, with toasted

pine nuts, shaved

Parmesan and lemon

vinaigrette.

MYRNA

WAGNER

For evenly sliced vegetables, I pulled out

my food processor. It’s a new model I got

last fall at the Clay County Fair, an add-on

to my Vitamix blender. There are so many

attachments and pieces to this appliance

that I had to rearrange my pantry to store

everything.

There are seven different slicing and

shredding blades, and I wasn’t sure which

thickness would be best. Opting for the

one labeled thin, I assembled everything

and fed the celery through the chute. A flip

of the switch and five stalks of celery were

sliced in seconds.

I took everything apart to check the thickness,

which seemed perfect, then put it back

together to slice the fennel.

I split the bulb in half, and it just fit into

the food chute. It took some pressure on

the plunger to push it through, but it finally

budged.

The entire bulb. With a plop.

Apparently, you don’t have to have the

blade in place for the device to run.

Second attempt worked, and the salad

was tasty.

Local students curate new exhibit at Pearson Lakes Art Center

Whispers

OF THE WILDERNESS

For the majority of museum and

art gallery visitors, the experience

is simply about seeing and

enjoying works of art on display.

For a small group of local middle

school students the experience was

something else entirely.

Four students involved with the

No Boundaries program at Okoboji

Middle School and Harris-Lake

Park Middle School took part in

everything from selection to installation

of the newest exhibit on display

at the Pearson Lakes Art Center

in Okoboji.

“This is an exhibit that we’d had

planned in the schedule then when

we landed the opportunity to work

with the No Boundaries students

it changed the trajectory of what it

would be,” said visual arts director

Danielle Clouse Gast.

Originally tasked with helping

identify archival software that the art

center could use to catalog artwork,

the project quickly evolved to include

much more.

“It was a combination pitch, with

the art center’s main need of having

an official software system to catalog

artwork, and the second part being

if we had time maybe we can do a

show,” Clouse Gast said. “So as they

were researching software they were

also learning about the art we have

and so they went through the vault,

familiarized themselves with the

pieces, took photos and put together

a cohesive show from their selections.”

The show is titled “Whisper of the

Wilderness” and will be on display

through Feb. 25 in the Monte Pearson

Gallery.

The students will also participate

in a gallery reception from 5-7 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 16, where they will

talk about the pieces they selected

and why they chose certain works.

Lakeside Jukebox will perform the

same evening as part of the art center’s

Art After Hours program.

“It’s been a very exciting project to

work on with these local students

and for them to catch a glimpse of

what happens behind the scenes

at the art center — a smaller scale

Friday, Jan. 17. Tickets are available for purchase

online at www.orangecityarts.org or at the door for

You might not have heard this band before, but

you are sure to recognize the songs they play.

“Mads Tolling & The Mads Men is a jazz ensemble

led by internationally renowned violinist

and composer Mads Tolling. Originally from

Copenhagen, Denmark, Mads now resides in

San Francisco and has achieved significant acclaim,

including two Grammy Awards. The group

re-imagines classic songs from the 1960s, covering

iconic film, TV and radio hits like ‘Mission:

Impossible,’ ‘Hawaii 5-0,’ and ‘A Taste of Honey.’

Their music combines vibrant jazz arrangements

with nostalgic melodies, creating an exciting

fusion of past and present,” according to Emie

Andrulewich, one of the directors of Orange

City Arts. “The Mads Men features accomplished

vocalists and instrumentalists, and their album

‘Playing the 60s’ has been celebrated on U.S. jazz

radio charts.”

If you love jazz or simply love music played at

a high level then this show is not one you want to

miss.

“This concert is ideal for fans of jazz, lovers of

classic film and TV soundtracks, and anyone who

enjoys world-class musicianship. It’s also perfect

for those curious about innovative takes on familiar

tunes,” Andrulewich said.

Bringing this group to perform in Orange City

will offer up a chance for concertgoers to see a

Grammy-winning artist perform live.

“The upcoming concert promises to be a

thrilling experience, showcasing Mads Tolling’s

extraordinary violin skills and the ensemble’s creative

arrangements. Attendees can look forward

to a journey through beloved 1960s themes, reimagined

with fresh energy and improvisational

flair,” Andrulewich said. “The concert offers a rare

chance to see a Grammy-winning artist live, performing

music that resonates across generations.”

Andrulewich believes that the quality of these

performers are what makes them perfect for a

performance in Orange City.

“Mads Tolling & The Mads Men bring a dynamic

blend of virtuosity, nostalgia and innovation

to their performances, making them a perfect

fit for audiences in Orange City who appreciate

high-caliber musicianship and timeless music,”

Andrulewich said. “Their ability to connect the

classic soundtracks of the 1960s with modern

jazz interpretations makes them an exciting

choice to captivate and entertain a wide range of

listeners.” F

Kids Ice

Fishing Day

ready to

Pahoja

ICE, ICE,

RYLAN HOWE | STAFF WRITER

Baby

It’s a natural instinct to want to hunker down

and wait out the winter months in exchange

for spring sunshine.

But it’s also a missed opportunity to enjoy

outdoor adventures during those colder

months of the year.

That’s part of the mission of the Lyon County

Conservation Board — showcasing ways to

have fun in nature even though it may be a bit

chilly outside.

One event they host every year goes a long

way in that regard.

Their annual Kids Ice Fishing Day is set for

3-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Lake Pahoja.

The free event has everything set up for

families to enjoy a fun afternoon catching fish

through the ice. Each person that registers is

also eligible for a prize of some sort.

“We’ve got all the ice fishing equipment for

people who have never ice fished before, rods,

reels, bait and volunteers out there to help the

kids,” said conservation board director Justin

Smith. “It’s something we’ve done for probably

20 years and seems to get more popular

every year. People who’ve never done it before

can give it a try and see if they like it. The

weather usually cooperates pretty well and the

fishing is pretty good.”

Typically they’ll see lots of bluegills and

crappies through the ice during the event,

though Smith said there are some walleyes out

there to be found, too.

Smith suggests using light line and jigs as

small as possible, then finding the tree piles

and fishing next to them.

The volunteers will handle most of that leg

work, so the kids can concentrate on reeling in

the fish.

“We typically pre-scout and will set up over

places where we’re pretty sure people are at

least going to see fish,” Smith said. “It all just

goes along with our mission to get people

outdoors. In the winter when you’re getting

stir crazy with cabin fever you can have a fun,

enjoyable afternoon in nature even if it’s fairly

cold out.”

Bundle up and enjoy an adventure on the ice

at Lake Pahoja. F

Along with an appreciation of fiber

community. One of the missions of the

Sheldon Public Library is to provide a

gathering space.

Nicole Weber

Grab some yarn and your knitting

needles or crochet hooks.

The Sheldon Public Library

will be hosting a monthly event for

those looking to do two things — either

knit or crochet as well as get that

cozy feeling.

Hygge Knitting with Nicole will be

held the first Monday of the month

through the winter months at 6:30

p.m. The next event is scheduled for

Monday, Feb. 3.

While “knitting” is in the title of the

series, the night can also include other

yarn arts such as crocheting.

This is an event for people who are

looking to learn or already have some

skills when it comes to yarn crafts.

“This is a meet up for anyone wanting

to knit or crochet or learn to knit.

I don’t know how to crotchet. We’re

going to gather for knitting, conversation

and tea,” said Nicole Weber,

who is the teacher of the class as well

as the director of the Sheldon Public

Library. “Anyone interested in knitting

or crocheting. Beginning knitters

are also welcome. We are asking

that participants are 16 years old or

older.”

The knitters and crocheters will be

in search of that Scandinavian feeling

of coziness that gained popularity

on our side of the pond over the

past few years — hygge, pronounced

“hoo-gah.”

According to the Merriam-Webster

Dictionary: “The meaning of hygge

is a cozy quality that makes a person

feel content and comfortable.”

Weber decided that the word hygge

represented what she hoped Knitting

with Nicole could help provide.

“I thought this perfectly describes

what I wanted this meet up to be

and winter is a great time to practice

hygge,” Weber said.

She hopes that this monthly event

will give people that sense of hygge,

community as well as a feeling useful

while making art.

“Along with an appreciation of

fiber crafts, I hope that people get a

sense of community. One of the missions

of the Sheldon Public Library is

to provide a gathering space,” Weber

said. “[I am most excited about] the

sense of hygge or congeniality that

comes with getting together to share

an experience.” F
