A COMPLAINT about deputy
mayor Malcolm Lyall’s claim
the Treaty Principles Bill has the
backing of “some old Pakeha men
that are living in the past” has not
been upheld.
Lyall made the comment during
a council debate on whether
it should make a submission
against the controversial bill.
Say goodbye
to bad cell
reception
• By Daniel Alvey
THIS IS THE only spot (right)
Kelly Baker can make a call in
her house – but several new cell
towers are about to change that.
Baker lives in the south-west
of West Melton where cellphone
reception has been a problem for
years.
“When my teenagers are at
home alone, I worry they may
not be able to get in touch with
me,” Baker said.
Now Spark, One New Zealand
and 2degrees are promising
coverage in West Melton will
improve. The three telecommunications
providers are each
Lyall’s claim prompted Lincoln
resident Stuart McKinlay
to lodge a formal complaint
with chief executive Sharon
Mason and Mayor Sam
Broughton. McKinlay claimed it
breached the council’s code
of conduct and was racist in
nature.
“I was offended by this remark,
as I am sure many other residents
of Selwyn District would be if
in the process of building or
planning cell towers in the area
over the next 12 months.
A Spark tower is nearing
completion on the corner
of Hoskyns and Newton Rds
near where Baker lives.
“Once live, this will greatly
improve connectivity for those
using the Spark mobile network
in West Melton,” a Spark
spokesperson said.
One New Zealand said its
tower in north-west West
Melton, near Halkett Rd, is
expected to be operational
within the next few weeks.
they were aware of what
he said,” McKinlay told
Selwyn Times.
The comment came
before councillors voted
to make a submission
against the bill.
In his complaint,
McKinlay said Lyall’s
comment breached the
standards: Bullying,
discrimination, disrepute,
respect, and relationships
with the public.
But Lyall has been cleared
by Mason and Broughton
who deemed his comment
did not meet the threshold
for a code of conduct
Malcolm breach nor did it bring the
Lyall council into disrepute.
Dog abuse captured on
CCTV appals viewers
• By Kees Chalmers and
Daniel Alvey
SHOCKING CCTV footage has
emerged of a man kicking and
punching a german shepherd in
Rolleston.
Police and the SPCA are now
investigating. Police say they are
following lines of inquiry.
The incident, which was
captured on a home security
camera, happened at 9.53pm on
Park Lane near Levi Park last
Thursday.
It appeared the man was
taking the dog for a walk.
Security footage shows the
man striking and kicking his
dog repeatedly, leaving the
animal yelping and whimpering
in pain.
People have expressed outrage
over the incident on social
media, and come forward with a
suspect’s name.
On Starnews Facebook page
one poster said: “This footage
made me cry. Why does anyone
think they have the right to treat
animals like this. I hope he is
caught and imprisoned for the
behaviour, if it was a child, you
would be (and) should be no
Said others: “The poor dog
needs to go to a loving home
which it deserves & that rotter
should never, ever be allowed
to own another pet” . . . “If they
The SPCA declined to discuss
the incident with Selwyn Times.
“Police have lead agency
spokeswoman Bridget Burke.
Lyall said he would have
travelled to Wellington to take
part in the Hīkoi mō te Tiriti,
a national march in December
against the bill, if he was able to.
Councillors debated what
would be in the submission as
the council had not canvassed
ratepayers’ views.
In its submission, the council
was focused on how the bill
would affect its operations and
partnerships, which includes
providing a seat around the table
for local iwi.
Councillors Grant Miller and
Elizabeth Mundt voted against
the council making a submission.
They said the council was taking
a political stance but traditionally
it had been an apolitical council.
Councillor Bob Mugford, who
was not at the meeting, told
Selwyn Times if he had been there
he would have abstained from
voting. He did not believe the
council should get involved in the
issue.
Councillors who supported
the submission said it was not
made on behalf of ratepayers but
rather showed how the bill would
directly impact the council.
Introducing Wheelbarrow Theatre:
A New Creative Force for Selwyn
We are thrilled to announce the
launch of Wheelbarrow Theatre,
Selwyn’s newest theatre company,
led by the dynamic duo Marilyn Ollett
and Phil Dean. With an extensive
history in both the local and national
theatre scene—especially through
their involvement with CentreStage
Rolleston—Ollett and Dean are
passionate about bringing fresh,
interactive, and family-friendly
performances to our community.
In an exciting debut, Wheelbarrow
Theatre will present Through the
Looking Glasses, an engaging,
interactive show perfect for
children, touring Selwyn’s towns
from January 23 to 26, 2025.
With stops in Rolleston, Lincoln,
Darfield, and Southbridge, the
60-minute performance invites
young audiences into a world of
imagination and wonder.
The show is designed to captivate
kids, offering them a hands-on,
immersive theatre experience—ideal
for curious minds.
For families looking to enjoy a fun
outing together, Through the Looking
Glasses is the perfect option.
Children’s tickets are just $10, with
adults, parents, carers, and even
teddies, invited to attend for free.
(And don’t forget to bring a cushion
for comfort during the show!)
This new theatre initiative is a
wonderful opportunity to support
local arts while giving children and
families a chance to experience
the magic of live performance.
Wheelbarrow Theatre is sure to
become a cherished part of the
Selwyn cultural landscape, and we
look forward to watching it grow in
the years to come.
Said Broughton: “The council
regularly makes submissions on
legislation that could impact our
operations.
“While we aim to represent
the best interests of the entire
community, we acknowledge that
not every decision will align with
everyone’s perspective.”
Broughton and councillor
Sophie McInnes also made
personal submissions against the
bill.
Christchurch City Council and
Environment Canterbury also
made submissions against the
bill.
KEY POINTS IN THE SUBMISSION
In its submission the
council said the bill would
not help its existing
partnerships and would
be costly to implement.
“We are committed
to fostering meaningful
partnerships, grounded in
dialogue, mutual respect,
and shared aspirations.
The bill, however,
undermines these efforts
by introducing changes
that are unnecessary and
unhelpful,” Mayor Sam
Broughton said in the
submission.
“Partnership is central
to Te Tiriti. The absence of
meaningful engagement
with Māori during the
development of the
bill is concerning and
undermines the Crown’s
obligations under Te Tiriti.
The unilateral approach
taken by this bill fails to
respect the principles of
partnership, participation,
and protection.”
Broughton said the
bill creates unnecessary
uncertainty for established
legislative frameworks
like the Resource
Management Act and
Local Government
Act. This could lead
to increased litigation
and legal costs as new
interpretations are tested.
It may also require
additional training and
resources, create financial
pressures, and divert
funding from essential
services.
“Council remains
committed to fostering
meaningful bicultural
relationships and
supporting positive
outcomes for all our
communities. The bill
is unnecessary, risks
undermining existing
progress, and diverts focus
and resources from the
significant work already
being undertaken to
strengthen bicultural
partnerships.”

Cell towers promise to
fix poor phone coverage
PHOTO: GETTY
•From page 1
“A second site in the south-east
of West Melton is expected to be
finished before the end of 2025,”
the spokesperson said.
In Weedons, 2degrees
upgraded its tower in December
to provide 5G coverage.
It plans to upgrade its West
Melton site later this year.
The poor phone coverage
across West Melton may have
ironically been a result of
residents opposing cell towers
because they believed they could
be eyesores.
It led to shorter towers being
built, making them less effective.
West Melton Residents Association
chair Sam Wilshire said
it was unfortunate those opposed
to the towers got their way.
He said it was “a select few
having a whinge.”
Wilshire said poor coverage
hampered communication
during a large vegetation fire in
December which forced about 50
homes and a caravan park to be
evacuated.
“We had no power, no cellphone
coverage, we were in the
dark,” he said.
“I’m a community response
team leader and I didn’t know we
had opened an emergency evacuation
centre until two hours after
it had opened.”
Wilshire said the tower improvements
sound “awesome”
but he believes the community
will have to wait-and-see if their
coverage will improve once they
are up and running.
Telecommunications Forum
chief executive Paul Brislen said
when residents push back on
towers being built in their area
they generally go to the back of
the queue.
“If the companies face a pushback
in a certain area they cross
it off the list and move on to the
next because the demand is so
high.”
Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg has
been pushing for better cellphone
coverage.
“I have been actively
advocating for improved
connectivity for residents and,
as a result, all three major
telecommunications providers
have been building new towers
to support the district’s rapid
growth,” Grigg said.
THE COUNCIL will head to
court for the first time over a
parking ticket next month.
Rolleston resident John Boulton
received a $40 ticket in August
for parking his ute outside his
Lucca Cres house with two
wheels on the berm, something
he had done for three and a half
years prior to getting the ticket.
He disputed the ticket, telling
the council he should have got a
warning. But the council refused
to waive it.
Boulton continued to refuse
to pay and now the matter has
ended up in court. He faces a
hearing on February 13. Boulton
said he will represent himself.
Boulton would not comment
because the matter was now before
the court. But he previously
told Selwyn Times: “If I had got
a warning there would not have
been an issue.”
Data revealed under the Local
Government Official Information
and Meetings Act shows in the
12 months until November the
council waived 199 tickets that
were disputed. A further 474 tickets
had their disputes dismissed.
In the same period the council
referred 497 outstanding infringements
to the Ministry of
Justice for collection.
THE GRASS ISN’T GREENER: Leisa Elliot’s lawn in Birdlings Flat has been
crowned the ugliest in the world.
World’s ugliest lawn
in Birdlings Flat
A BIRDLINGS Flat resident has taken top
honours in a global competition to find
the world’s ugliest lawn.
Now in its second year, the World’s
Ugliest Lawn competition rewards lawn
owners for not watering their grass and
flowerbeds. It is part of a global initiative
to save water.
Leisa Elliot’s winning lawn in Birdlings
Flat is subject to strong wind and little
rainfall. Plentiful cacti, well suited to the
conditions, surround the patchy yellow
lawn.
Elliot has also featured in prominent UK
newspaper The Guardian for her ‘accolade’.
“I live in a small coastal community,”
Elliott told The Guardian.
“Our drinking water is pumped from a
well in nearby Kaitorete Spit. In my mind,
drinking water is drinking water, not
watering-the-lawn water.”
Elliot’s garden was a testament to resilience,
the jury said in its announcement.
“In a region known for its fierce coastal
winds and low rainfall, Leisa’s lawn is a
powerful statement.”
The contest began in Gotland, Sweden,
as a stunt to promote water conservation
on the island. The competition’s website
says it is a way to inspire positive change
and show sustainability doesn’t have to be
boring.
“I have aimed at creating a garden that
primarily looks after itself, making its own
natural rhythm,” Elliot told The Guardian.
“Mother Nature does the watering here.
When the rain comes, the transformation
is stunning. An oasis after a desert is a
sight to behold.”
She said many varieties of bird
congregate by the pond, including
bellbirds, fantails, silver eyes, finches,
blackbirds and starlings.
Elliott told The Guardian she found
out about the competition in February
through a morning breakfast show.
“We were experiencing above-normal
summer temperatures and my lawn sure
fitted the competition bill.”
The jury, composed of Gotland
residents, voted unanimously for Elliott’s
lawn.
“Her lawn may not win beauty contests,
but it wins hearts for its message of
sustainability and adaptability.
“The ground, parched and textured
by the elements, is dotted with natural,
weather-carved indentations and adorned
with the muted colours of a landscape that
thrives without human interference.”
Couple’s mission to turn heritage
building into their dream home
Prebbleton’s oldest
home is getting a new
lease on life with owners
John and Wendy Hillary
pouring their life savings
into it. Daniel Alvey
reports
WHEN JOHN AND Wendy
Hillary first walked past the 1864
home on Tosswill Rd, they immediately
fell in love with it.
Now, 10 years on, they have
stripped the home back to its
skin and bones to rebuild it into a
modern classic.
From Skipton, North Yorkshire,
they arrived in Christchurch in
2011.
The couple had always liked
New Zealand, and when looking
at shifting they were deciding between
Napier and Christchurch.
“It was on a whim really,” John
said.
“We chose Christchurch because
it was more populated.”
When John and Wendy arrived
in October, they were greeted by
a city in ruins from the February
earthquake.
While in England they had
heard things on the news about
the quake, but did not realise the
extent of the damage.
For the first few months they
were living in a caravan at South
Brighton Holiday Park.
“It was like we were in a warzone
– there were still soldiers on the
streets,” Wendy said.
John got a job with Fletcher
Building as a project manager
assisting with the rebuilds of damaged
homes.
Wendy got a job in the Koru
Lounge with Air New Zealand,
and later as a flight attendant.
After living in several rental
properties in Christchurch, the
couple purchased the Prebbleton
house in 2014.
While in love with the home’s
English style, a downside was its
lack of insulation.
“It was freezing. The electric bill
was unbelievable,” John said.
HERITAGE: Parts of the home
will be kept the same, such
as the original stairs and
balustrade.
REBUILDING: John and Wendy Hillary are giving Prebbleton’s oldest home a modern upgrade.
The house was raised before Christmas to replace its foundations. PHOTOS: DANIEL ALVEY
Said Wendy: “We were just heating
the street because it was just
going out the windows and out of
the walls. If the wind was blowing
you could see the curtains lifting.”
They lived in the home for about
three years before putting it up for
sale in 2017 when Wendy got a job
in Wellington.
They were unable to sell the
home and looking back, John said
they were glad they didn’t.
While in Wellington they rented
out the home, returning in 2021.
“When we came back we
thought we’d do a renovation so
we started removing all the linings
and realised there was a really badly
damaged chimney so I got in
touch with EQC (now NHC) and
it turned out it was earthquake
damage that was missed.”
The couple tried to apply for the
on-sold programme which would
help pay for the repairs which had
been missed, but after about three
years of trying for approval, they
decided to go it alone.
“We were left with an uninsurable
property and did not have
many options so we decided to
throw our life savings behind it,”
John said.
Complicating matters further,
in 2019 the house was listed as a
heritage building which added
further red tape to the building
consent process.
But, at the end of last year,
they got the required consent
and began by raising the house
to replace the original stone
foundations with modern timber
and concrete piles, raising
the floor level by about 30cm.
Wendy said in high winds you
could feel the house move around
on its old foundations.
“The house feels so good compared
to what was.”
The old stone foundations are
not going to waste, with John
planning to make them into
a stone wall as part of future
landscaping work.
With the house now on its new
foundations, work has started
on removing walls to make the
downstairs kitchen, living and
dining space more open plan, as
well as adding new treated timber
framing.
Insulation will be added to the
walls, floor and roof, and double
glazing retrofitted to the original
window frames.
While the exterior will be kept
the same, the interior will be
a mix of modern and heritage
features.
John said they plan to keep the
doors, the stairs, the balustrade,
and the sash windows.
Part of the renovation includes
rebuilding a lean-to, which was
too damaged to be saved.
The couple wants to have the
renovation finished by the end of
August.
A builder and stonemason by
trade, John can help with some
of the work, but without a New
Zealand certificate, he is leaving
most of the work to others.
The couple do not want to say
what the budget for the project is,
but John said: “For a Yorkshireman
it’s a lot of money.”
REUSING: John plans to use the original stone foundations
as part of the landscaping.
Blyth House
• Scottish immigrant
James Blyth was the first
owner of the Tosswill Rd
home which became
known as Blyth House.
• Blyth opened the first
blacksmith in Prebbleton
in June 1864, located
northwest of his home.
• By April 1871 it was
reported Blyth employed
about 12 men and had
earned district-wide
distinction for the ploughs
he made.
• The house passed
through a number of hands
after 1878, including those
of Messrs Anderson (1879-
1912), Bennett (1912-19) and
Chappell (1919-42).
Prebbleton’s origins
The Prebble family, who
originated from Kent,
England, are responsible for
the settlement’s origins.
James and Ann Prebble
arrived in New Zealand in
1840 with five of James’
children from his first
marriage, plus an infant son
born during the voyage.
In 1852, James’ son
William began using 5000
acres of vacant land near
what would become
Prebbleton. In 1855, James’
younger brother Edward
bought 50 acres nearby,
which he subdivided and
sold off.
In 1862, William sold his
land to J.I. Tosswill, who
officially named the area
Prebbleton.
The Prebbles were
actively involved in the
development of the
township, including helping
to build the first church,
All Saints, and donating a
stained glass window.
• Prebbleton’s Māori
name – Taumata Kuri
– comes from one of
the descendants of Te
Ruahikihiki, Kuwhare,
who travelled north from
Taumutu towards Kaiapoi.
He carried supplies to trade
and knowledge to share.
Kuwhare stopped to rest
at Taumata Kuri. Taumata
refers to a resting place,
while Kuri refers to the
Kurikuri grass in the area.

water at home
Mulch, mulch and more mulch!
Use mulch or cover the soil with organic
CARD SHARK: Westpac’s ATM on Lincoln’s main street has
been plagued with issues in recent months.
Glitchy ATM
captures cards
• By Barry Clarke
THE TROUBLESOME Westpac
ATM in Lincoln’s main street has
been playing up again – this time
swallowing cards.
People withdrawing money
from the Gerald St machine were
caught by surprise when their
cards disappeared.
The problem was exacerbated if
it happened after business hours,
meaning people could not get a
card reissued at the nearest Westpac
branch in Rolleston.
Westpac says the machine will
be replaced in the next “12 to 18
months”.
“It’s just so frustrating,” a
woman told Selwyn Times.
“I was getting some cash, and
my card just went. It was a double
whammy because I didn’t get the
money I was after and I couldn’t
then pay by eftpos because my
card was gone, and I couldn’t get
another one because it was after
hours.”
Another customer said he was
lucky not to lose his card.
“As I went up to the ATM, a car
horn sounded. At first I didn’t
take any notice but it kept going
so I looked around and a woman
in a car parked by the ATM was
tooting and waving at me.
“I went over and she said ‘don’t
use the machine, it just swallowed
my card’.”
In December, Selwyn Times
reported ongoing issues with
the ATM, after assurances from
Westpac the problems would be
fixed. The machine was regularly
out of service and had been taking
cards but not giving out cash.
Said a Westpac spokesperson of
the latest issue: “We’re aware of a
very small number of cards being
captured by our Lincoln ATM
over the past week. We have put
in place a fix to address the root
cause and will continue to monitor
the ATM to ensure the issue is
fully resolved.
“The ATM contains up-to-date
parts and technology and is due
to be replaced by a new machine
in the next 12 to 18 months.
“It’s rare for a card to be
captured by an ATM. We
appreciate it can be frustrating
when this happens and encourage
customers to contact us
immediately.”
BACK TO NORMAL: Water use has dropped in recent weeks after reaching a record high,
making water restrictions less likely.
Water use down from record levels
• By Daniel Alvey
WATER RESTRICTIONS are
less likely after usage dropped
to normal levels after reaching
record highs last month.
In mid-December, daily
demand across the district
increased to 55,500 cubic metres
a day, prompting the council to
warn of water restrictions before
the new year.
But water use has dropped
back in recent weeks.
Strong tapped to lead
district’s water initiative
THE FORMER chair of Te
Pūkenga has been hired to lead
the district’s new water entity.
Murray Strong has been
chosen to be the establishment
chair for the council’s Local
Water Done Well programme.
Strong resigned his position
at Te Pūkenga – New Zealand
Institute of Skills and
Technology – in December 2023
amid an impending upheaval in
the organisation led by Minister
for Tertiary Education and Skills
Penny Simmonds.
Strong will remain an
independent chair for
Destination Southern Lakes,
Usage dropped
to about 36,000
cubic metres a
day in the last
week of December
and 32,000 cubic
metres 10 days
ago.
Council acting
executive director
infrastructure and property
Murray England said the drop is
likely due to people being away
and not watering gardens due to
the destination management
organisation for Queenstown
and Wānaka, Digital Interactive
Health in
Dunedin, and
New Zealand
Centre of Digital
Excellence, also
the council
Murray
Strong
and planning for setting up a
council controlled organisation
(CCO) for water services.
Strong’s appointment comes
the wet weather.
He said people still have to be
mindful of their water use.
“As the weather warms up
again, we are encouraging
everyone to make every drop
count this summer and check
out our tips to get the most out
of your water use.”
Tips for reducing water
use include adding mulch
to gardens, planting natives,
checking for leaks, and watering
for shorter periods.
in preparation for public
consultation on the CCO next
month.
Said Mayor Sam Broughton:
“We will consult our
community across February and
March on the decision on either
a standalone Selwyn
CCO model or a new
department set up in-house
and we encourage everyone to
provide feedback during that
three week process.”
He said the appointment of
intent but does not preempt the
final decision on what that entity
Golfers’ tally grows
GREENDALE’S Longest Day
died at 18 from testicular cancer
had raised $4275.
It is the eighth-most of anyone
Moped ride for cancer
IT HAS BEEN an eventful start
to the year for Hamish Goatley
and his band of moped riders,
who have been travelling the
length of New Zealand raising
money for Hospice New Zealand
and Rural Support Trust.
The ride, dubbed Grunter’s
Moped Mission, is in honour of
Hamish’s father Grant Goatley,
known as Grunter, who died of
esophageal cancer 10 years ago.
“He’d probably think it’s a bit
nuts, to be fair,” Goatley said.
“It is a bit nuts, but he’d be all
for it.”
The team have raised more
than $5500 since their ride
began in Cape Reinga on January
4.
Most of Goatley’s crew met
while studying at Lincoln
University. None of the team
were regular moped riders
before the charity ride, with
most of the vehicles being
purchased just days beforehand.
Treaty bill submission
outside of ‘mandate’
TOO POLITICAL: A resident has said Mayor Sam Broughton
has no mandate to make a submission on the Treaty
Principles Bill.
PHOTO: RUSSELL PALMER/RNZ
IN A WRITTEN submission
signed by Sam Broughton, the
Selwyn District Council has
referred to the Treaty Principles
Bill as “unnecessary” and a
“distraction”, and strongly
recommended the bill be
dropped.
Sam Broughton also said the
“absence of any meaningful engagement
with Māori during the
development of the bill was not
only concerning but undermines
the Crown’s obligations under Te
Tiriti.”
But for some reason he has no
concern at all about (not) consulting
with the people of Selwyn
who elected him and his council
before making such a blatant
political statement on behalf of
the people of the district, which
he had no mandate to make.
This smacks of the same arrogance
Broughton and his council
displayed with regard to the
naming of the ratepayer-funded
Selwyn library when they refused
to place the word ‘library’ on the
building despite something of an
uproar from ratepayers.
Broughton and his council
need to be reined in over this,
and the conduct of all the councillors
who voted to send this
submission need to be remembered
at election time.
We have no need for political
activists, we need elected officials
who are solely concerned with
the interests of the district and its
ratepayers.
- Geoff Hill (abridged)
Great to see Lincoln
University’s Dr Issie Barrett
working with the Enviroschools
programme monitoring the
Selwyn River. Many will recall
Lincoln’s Kelvin Nicole used to
do this 15 years ago, and I am
glad we are able to continue with
it and see it so well supported by
the schools too.
As someone living by the
Selwyn, I look forward to reading
the results of the ongoing
monitoring.
Country’s clash with
Marlborough. PHOTO: GETTY
• By Sam Coughlan
CANTERBURY Country are a
win away from competing for
the Hawke Cup again after they
claimed first-innings points
against Marlborough at the
weekend.
Country’s result at Rangiora’s
Mainpower Oval saw them top
the zone 3 standings. They also
had a first-innings win over
Nelson and beat Buller outright.
Country will now play Nelson
next month in the final at
Mainpower Oval. The winner
will then play for the Hawke
Cup against holders Hawke’s
Bay.
The cup was last held by
Country in 2023.
Coach Rob Frew said he
is looking forward to the
challenges playing Nelson will
bring. He expected them to be
more competitive than when the
sides last met.
“ (They) always put out a very
strong team, and normally get
a few guys back, they don’t play
in their normal round robin
games.
“So it’d be interesting to see
who they have, potentially
Marlborough was restricted
to 189, with Peninsula-Harbour
quick Will Williams taking five
wickets. William is playing for
Country during the English
off-season where he represents
Lancashire.
Country struggled early
with the bat and were 89/4
at one stage, needing to pass
Marlborough’s total to book
their place in the final. Sefton’s
Mackenzie Smith smoked 87 off
112 balls to help Country rack
up 259.
With time running out in the
two-day game, Nelson finished
their second innings on 31/3.
“We probably didn’t bat quite
as well as we’d like,” Frew said.
“There was
a little bit of
pressure at
about 80-
odd for four,
but we put
together a wee
partnership
after that and it
didn’t feel too Rob Frew
bad.”
The three-day zone 3 final
will be played at Mainpower
Oval from February 7.
“ Our objective was to try and
get a home zone final,” Frew
said.
“ We’re pretty lucky in
our zone, we’ve some lovely
grounds, but it’s always nice to
play at home at Mainpower.”
the Canterbury Country premier
competition on Saturday.
Leeston-Lincoln-Southbridge
and Darfield went down last
weekend to Sefton and Ohoka
respectively who occupy the top
two positions in the ladder.
Peninsula-Harbour were denied
a shot at victory when their match
against Cheviot was rained off
with Harbour just 79 runs short
of the win.
Weedons return to the field after
a bye to take on Kaiapoi. They
will be looking to leapfrog Ohoka
into second with a win.
Ohoka play Peninsula-Harbour,
while Darfield host league leaders
Sefton who have won every match
they have completed.
Leeston-Lincoln will travel to
Cheviot. The teams sit in seventh
16 Selwyn Times Wednesday January 15 2025
Back
to School
Gear up for the new school year
With Christmas and New Year behind
us, parents, students and teachers across
New Zealand are gearing up for another
school year.
It’s a time filled with new beginnings,
excitement and anticipation – for both
parents and children – and it requires
some careful planning to ensure it all goes
smoothly. Start by checking what date
your school reopens so there’s no lastminute
running around or stresses, then
make a list of what you need to do – buy
uniforms, arrange transport, sort lunches
– well in advance so that when the return
date rolls around, you’re more than ready.
Avoid Homework Stress
Homework can be a controversial topic.
Some parents and schools disagree on
the value of doing it or how beneficial
it is, while others see the importance of
independent learning and reinforcing
their school learning. If your child will be
doing homework, as with most things, it
is about balance. With the right approach,
it can become a productive and even
enjoyable part of the day. Here are tips
for creating a smooth and conflict-free
homework routine:
Set a Regular Homework Routine
• Set a specific time each day for
homework, perhaps after a snack
and some downtime after school).
• Establish the homework habit,
but be flexible to allow for
extracurricular activities or family
events.
Create a comfortable and welcoming
study and homework space
• Pick a calm, well-lit area away from
screens and distractions.
• Be prepared and keep supplies like
pens, paper, and a calculator nearby
to avoid time spent looking for
items needed.
Support Effective Time Management
• Help your child prioritise tasks by
identifying which assignments are
due soonest or require the most
effort.
• Support your child with planning
and organising their homework
to work out the order they want
to work on tasks. Some prefer to
complete the easy tasks first, and
some choose the more complex
tasks and assignments to get them
out of the way.
• Older students might benefit from a
planner to map out the assignments.
Manage Tasks by breaking them Into
Manageable Chunks
• Organising tasks into smaller
steps will help to avoid feeling
overwhelmed.
• Checklists or timers can track
progress, show task completion, and
provide a sense of accomplishment.
Be Supportive
• Offer guidance and encouragement,
but don’t do the homework for your
child.
• To help them think it through, try
asking, “What part’s giving you
trouble?”
• If they have questions, help them
figure out how to look for solutions
• Teach problem-solving strategies so
that, with practice, they can learn to
tackle challenges on their own
• Praise your child for their focus
on their work and their effort.
Celebrate achievements.
Take small breaks
• Know your child’s attention span.
• If frustration or stress arises, take a
break (short walk, snack, play with
a pet, have a drink), then go back
to the tasks and consider a different
perspective.
• Consider setting a timer to help kids
know when breaks start and finish.
Communicate with Teachers
• Speak with your child’s teacher to
understand their expectations and
how you can best support your
child.
• If homework continues to cause
issues, discuss strategies or support
with the teacher.
• Get homework help for study areas
of concern. This help might include
accessing online support (websites,
interactive learning guides, online
tutors) or using study guides or inperson
tutoring.
Lincoln High School: an
all-round education
For students, new and old, at Lincoln
High, there are opportunities awaiting
them. Lincoln High enables students to
explore academic, sporting, leadership,
cultural, and artistic pursuits, whether
to enhance already proven skills or to
try something new.
Academic Excellence
Students can choose from a wide
range of courses at each year level
with clear pathways through to
tertiary education. Option courses
allow passions to be followed while
important core subjects support
numeracy and literacy progress. With an
emphasis on personal excellence, students
are supported in achieving their very best.
Sport
A huge variety of sports are available at
Lincoln. If you play it, we’ll look to offer
it. Our teams compete in local, provincial,
South Island, and national tournaments.
Social teams exist for those looking to give
something new a go or to compete with a
group of friends.
Leadership
Students can continue or begin their
leadership journey by applying to be
part of a range of leadership groups that
enhance the school experience for all.
From being a house leader to working in
the Student Executive group, there is an
opportunity to make a difference.
Cultural
Māori whānau and Pasifika student
groups meet regularly, and other
ethnicities will also get together to support
each other. Bicultural signage is prevalent
on campus, and our Lincoln tikanga is
embedded in the school culture.
Performing and Fine Arts
In 2025, the major production of
“Little Shop of Horrors” will see our
talented students perform a professional
show in front of sellout crowds. Our Art
department is nationally recognised, and
student work in painting, sculpture, and
print is regularly showcased in exhibitions
and installations around New Zealand.
Lincoln High School has so many
opportunities for students to thrive–they
just need to take the first step and get
into it!
Make 2025 the year you shop local
As we head into 2025, you may find
yourself with a growing ‘to do list’ and if
home improvements, car maintenance, or
tackling your outdoor spaces is on your
list then you’re in luck because there’s
a huge selection of useful shops and
services right in Rolleston.
While Rolleston has great transport
links into Christchurch central city and
further afield, you don’t actually have
to have to travel to find everything you
need.
For those keen on taking on some DIY
projects this summer, you’ll be spoilt
choice in the iZone and surrounding
areas.
Head to Placemakers at 35 Hoskyns
Road, where you’ll find an extensive
range of goods to handle any home
improvements.
Whether you need heating, kitchen,
timber, tools, or landscaping products,
the team at Placemakers are happy to
help.
Or take a trip to Haydn Outlet store at
8 Detroit Drive, where you can pick up
painting and decorating supplies. From
fillers, tape, brushes, and protective wear,
you’ll have all the supplies you’ll need for
your next project.
Have you decided the new year is
the perfect time to boost your outdoor
spaces? Then check out Stihl Rolleston at
40 Hoskyns Road. It’s the go-to place for
outdoor power, gardening equipment,
and accessories. With a wide range of
lawnmowers, hedge cutters, trimmers,
blower vacs, and chainsaws, they have
the knowledge and expertise to assist
with your queries.
Summer is also the ideal time
to undergo some essential pool
maintenance - you can visit the experts
at Swimart Christchurch, 12 Hendrick
Lane, who will be more than happy to
ensure your swimming pool or spa are in
tip top condition year-round.
If it’s your car that’s in need of a bit
of TLC, then Jones Road Autos at 131
Iport Drive can help. From repairs and
servicing, to parts and accessories –
you’ll find everything you need to keep
your car happy.
And if all that shopping has got you in
need of some refreshments, then fear not
– because there’s also plenty of spots to
grab a coffee, a bite to eat, or something
more substantial.
Why not make 2025 the year you shop
Time is right
to keep your
garden bright
The summer months
offer no respite from
necessary garden work
Vegetables
In all but the coolest areas,
radishes sown now will not
thrive, tending to bolt to seed,
even when the soil is kept moist,
and those that do mature will be
unacceptably sharp in flavour.
To add a little bite to salads, use
nasturtium leaves and flowers,
or grow some mustard streaks
(Brassica juncea), which grow
very rapidly, and if to be eaten
fresh, are best young. Older plants
can be used in stir-fry mixes.
Onion plants can have their
tops bent over to assist bulb
swelling.
Crops sown in autumn will
be almost ready for pulling. If
harvested in hot, settled weather,
they should be well-ripened and
suitable for long storage. Thickstemmed
bulbs will probably not
keep well, so put them aside for
immediate use.
Liquid manure assists most
crops. Make your own by tying
a sack filled with sheep, horse,
cow or poultry manure and
suspending it in water for a few
days. One kilogram of fresh
manure to five litres of water is a
suitable mixture.
Excellent liquid manure can
also be made with seaweed and is
good for silverbeet, asparagus and
cabbages.
Nitrate of soda and sulphate of
ammonia (2 Tbsp each to 20 litres
of water) promote leafy growth
in salad crops and any winter
TASTY ADDITION: To add a little bite to salads, try using nasturtium leaves and flowers.
PHOTOS: GETTY
greens not growing as fast as they
should.
Early potatoes can be lifted as
the foliage yellows. Once potatoes
are well matured, a combination
of rain and warm soil could
prompt new growth, spoiling
the crop’s quality and storage
properties.
PEST: White butterfly caterpillars attack at this time of year. Protect seedlings with derris dust
or spray with soapy water.
THINKING ABOUT BUILDING
A DECK?
Cabbage aphids and white
butterfly caterpillars attack at this
time of year. Protect seedlings
with derris dust or spray with
soapy water.
Flowers
The Madonna, or true
Christmas lily (Lilium candidum),
will have finished flowering by
now. Cut the old flower stems off
at ground level and destroy to
prevent the spread of botrytis.
Unlike almost all other lilies, L.
candidum has no resting period.
Fresh growth develops from the
bulbs as soon as the flowering
period is over, so if bulbs are to
be divided or shifted, the work
is best done now. Also, unlike
other lilies, the bulbs should not
be covered but the top third left
above the ground. They like hot,
dry spots and will tolerate some
lime.
Multiply all lily bulbs by
detaching scales and inserting
them point upwards in boxes of
sandy soil with the base of each
scale just below the surface.
Keep the boxes moist and plant
the scales out when they have
rooted. Plants propagated this
way should flower in the second
season.
Violas and pansies may be
looking straggly and producing
smaller flowers. Cut them back
to new growth just above the
ground and they will spring away.
Tulips and hyacinths can be
lifted and cleaned when the tops
have died down. Place the bulbs
in shallow trays in a dry, cool,
airy place. Do not expose them to
full sunshine.
Fruit
Strawberry plants can be
increased readily from the
rooted runners the plants are
now producing. Use only the
strongest runner and after it has
established roots, set it out in rich
soil in early March.
Summer propagation allows
the plant to develop before cold
weather sets in and bear a fruit
crop next summer.
If planting is delayed until
winter or spring, no fruit should
be allowed to develop in the first
season.
BMW’s i5 the perfect EV package
MEET THE i5 M60 xDrive, a
fully electric AWD version of
the latest generation mid-size
BMW 5 series sedan, that’s
spearheading the company’s
charge to deliver an even
wider portfolio of luxury high
performance EVs.
This is the first electrified 5
Series and comes armed with
two electric motors coupled to
high voltage batteries, so it’s
nicely primed to take the fight to
luxury EV rivals like Mercedes
Benz and Audi.
There’s more vehicle for the
money than the old model.
This one is 97mm longer, at
5060mm, and in the other direction,
32mm wider at 1900mm.
Another notable gain is an extra
20 millimetres that’s pushes the
wheelbase out to a very grownup
2995mm.
You get the same modern
sleek and distinctive BMW
lines as the rest of the 5 series
family, but with a few unique
variations to distinguish it from
its combustion engine powered
siblings.
At the front, the iconic
BMW kidney grille and twin
headlights get a clever rejig to
make a compelling and lasting
visual impression.
LED lighting elements are
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
more than aesthetic, serving
as turn indicators and daytime
running lights. Adding a touch
of brilliance to the light show
is BMW’s Iconic Glow contour
lighting fitted as standard on
models sold here.
Other cool touches are the
black side skirts, and flushmounted
door handles. The
words ‘welcome’ and ‘goodbye’
are projected in an ambient light
design around the vehicle. They
provide a nifty little light show
and enhance visibility at night
for the driver and passengers
when they exit the vehicle.
The beating performance
heart of the i5 M60 xDrive is
a space-saving high-voltage
battery nestled in the underbody
and provides energy content of
84kWh and a claimed real world
EV range of 516km. A new Max
Range function, when activated,
can increase this by up to 25 per
cent, through limiting power,
speed and deactivating cabin
comfort functions.
When tethered to a high-speed
charger, the i5’s battery charge
levels zip from 10 to 80 per cent
in just 30 minutes. That’s enough
time for owners to grab a coffee,
and check their emails while
they wait.
The $196,900 i5 M60 xDrive
test drive vehicle unleashes
with breathtaking effect BMW’s
enhanced fifth-generation
eDrive technology. This
combines a 442kW electric drive
system with two integrated drive
units on the front and rear axles.
An epic 820Nm of torque is
available when M Sport Boost or
the M Launch Control function
is activated. This is plenty to
send the vehicle surging from
zero to 100km/h in a vivid 3.8
seconds.
Drive at express pace and
the electric power train takes
some disconcertingly large
chunks out of the battery range.
However, some, but not all, of
this lost energy is clawed back
via a highly-efficient battery
regeneration system.
The transmission is a
straightforward single
ratio affair that does its job
expertly and is an understated
contributor to this outstanding
vehicle’s rock star EV
performance.
A modern spacious cabin is
everything you would expect
in a high class European
performance sedan. A quality
12-speaker sound system will
strike a positive chord with
music-loving owners. One thing
I noticed almost immediately
was a major cull of buttons
and controls, compared with
the old model, made possible
by digitalising more vehicle
functions.
The fully digital display
Ratings out of 10: Performance 9; Handling 8; Styling 8;
Comfort 8; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value for money:
6; Safety – Five star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8.5
system comprises a 12.3-inch
information display and holding
centre stage is a 14.9-inch
control display. A redesigned
steering wheel has a flattened
lower section and haptic
feedback for the control panels
and selector lever on the centre
console.
An essential requirement of
vehicles these days, especially
in this price bracket, is plenty
of innovative technology. The
i5 delivers emphatically on that
count.
On-board and making a big
difference in the technology
space is 5G-digital connectivity.
Among its bag of tricks are even
better smartphone integration,
via Apple CarPlay and Android
Auto and with the remote
software upgrades function, the
vehicle always receives the latest
software updates.
The pick for me from an
exhaustive list of advanced
technology is Parking Assistant
Professional. This provides
stress free automated parking
and manoeuvring of up to 200
metres that can be controlled in
the vehicle, or by smartphone
outside the car. It can then
automatically repeat the same
manoeuvre at the request of the
driver each time the vehicle is at
that location.
Live Cockpit Professional
includes the head-up display and
augmented view on the control
display or instrument cluster.
BMW Operating System 8.5
offers a wider range of digital
content for information and
entertainment, and improved
details on charging points for
electric vehicles and better
online services.
The advanced chassis and
control systems are adapted to
the weight balance associated
with the respective drive
technology.
It includes directly controlled
wheel slip limitation, integrated
braking system and sport
steering with variable steering
ratio as standard. M sport
suspension, M sport brake system
and the Adaptive M Suspension
Professional with electronically
controlled shock absorbers, and
integral active steering further
enhance this impressive package.
The high-voltage battery is
positioned low in the underbody,
for ideal balance that helps
create the i5’s nimble and surefooted
handling. It confidently
masters a diverse range of roads
typically found in our country.
Reverse Mortgages or
Home Equity Release
You may have seen the ads where people
use their home equity to supplement their
superannuation, do repairs or even take
a long-awaited holiday. As your home is
often your biggest asset, it pays to know
what you are getting yourself in for, as
reverse mortgages come with advantages
and disadvantages. You should obtain
independent legal and financial advice,
talk with your family before making any
decisions, and be aware of all the facts.
What is a reverse mortgage?
Your property has a specific value, and
you can borrow an amount of money
in the form of a loan based on that
value. However, the bank will dictate the
percentage of your home’s value you can
borrow. The loan is paid back when you
sell the house or pass away. You are not
required to make regular repayments, and
interest is calculated on the outstanding
balance and added monthly to your loan
(compounded). Some borrowers make
voluntary repayments to reduce the balance
and interest charged. Once you sell your
property, move into long-term care or
pass away, your loan needs to be repaid.
This repayment includes the original loan,
accumulated interest and fees.
Do I qualify?
You must be over 60 years, own a
freehold home, or a standard mortgage
the reverse mortgage can pay off. Some
properties, such as lifestyle blocks, farms,
and retirement villages, may not be
considered for reverse mortgages.
Advantages:
• You can spend the money on anything
you want.
• You can take a lump sum or regular
instalments.
• You can borrow 15-40% of
your property’s value based
on age.
• Depending on repayment
interest rates, increasing
house prices may reduce the
loss of equity when it comes
time to repay the loan.
• Some lenders guarantee no negative
equity (loan balance exceeds your home
value), and your estate will not have to
pay the difference.
• No repayments are needed until you sell,
and you will never be forced to move.
Disadvantages:
• You must remain in your home and not
rent it out or move into care without
selling and repaying the loan.
• You may be required to meet ongoing
property expenses, including house
insurance, rates, and property
maintenance.
• There are significant fees charged for the
set-up.
• Lenders charge higher-than-mortgage
interest rates.
• Interest rates are floating that can change
and increase.
• Without repayments, compounded
interest can reduce your home’s equity
immensely, affecting your ability to pay
for residential care should you need it.
Alternatives:
• Downsize into a cheaper property.
• Subdivide or cross-lease your section if
the property size allows it.
• Rent out your home and move into a
more affordable home.
• Take in a boarder.
• Check your entitlement to assistance,
rebates and rates relief.
• Sell your house (or a portion) to your
family for cash upfront or regular
repayments.
• Consider a retirement home with fixed
fees.
You will need to consider significant
factors and risks before deciding if a reverse
mortgage is right for you. Always ensure
you get full legal and financial advice to
safeguard your decision.
With fabulous off-street parking, coveted triple car garaging and a large 1,107sqm section, this home is an all-round
family winner. Equally impressive is the 284sqm floor plan. Enjoy the outlook to the lovingly cared-for garden from
either of the two large living rooms or from the patio, perfectly sheltered beneath the extended roofline. At the heart
of the home is a well-appointed kitchen, complete with ample storage, a walk-in pantry, and plenty of bench space.
The master bedroom boasts a luxurious, fully-tiled wet room, offering both practicality and elegance. Three
additional true double bedrooms provide generous accommodation, while a separate office, adjacent to the living
room, is an ideal setup for those who work from home. Thoughtful inclusions such as a walk-in linen room, a separate
laundry, two heat pumps, and a wood burner, guarantee this home is as functional as it is welcoming.
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
New year, new look
15
With the new year here, it’s the perfect
time to give your home a refresh.
Whether you’re hoping to redo a few
key areas or tackle your entire home, now
is the ideal time to make a start and help
set the tone for 2025.
And the good news is, there’s plenty of
ways to breathe new life into your home
without breaking the bank.
Clear the clutter
Before you get cracking with any major
makeovers, give your living spaces a
thorough sort through and clear out.
Say ‘goodbye’ to 2024, by throwing away,
donating or selling things you no longer
need or use.
Tackle clutter strategically by taking on
one room at a time, if that still feels too
daunting then commit to clearing one
drawer, cabinet, shelf or wardrobe each
day until the job’s done.
Rearrange and repurpose
A super simple – and free – way to give
your interiors a new look is by rearranging
or repurposing furniture you already have.
Moving pieces around can completely
change the flow and feel of a room. Try
shifting the layout of your living room,
repositioning the dining table, or even
moving artwork and mirrors to different
walls.
If you have items you no longer use,
repurpose them - old packing crates can
become stylish storage, a vintage ladder
can double as a unique bookshelf, or use a
stack of old books to perk up your coffee
table.
Break out the paint
Never underestimate the impact of a fresh
coat of paint to make your rooms look
brand-new.
Go big and bold with bright colours or a
daring feature wall or keep things looking
fresh for the new year with a muted colour
scheme.
Dig out any old tester paint pots and
use what’s left to give a new lease of life to
wooden furniture or, if you’re particularly
arty, have a go at painting a mural or
introducing some eye-catching accents.
Revive your entryway
Your entryway sets the tone for the rest
of your home, so a quick refresh here can
make a big impact throughout the rest of
your home.
Consider adding a new doormat, a coat
rack, or a stylish basket for shoes. A coat
of fresh paint or a new vase with seasonal
flowers can also bring a burst of energy to
this often-overlooked space.
Finishing touches
The small details can make a big impact
when it comes to refreshing your home.
Change up your textiles with new
cushions, throws, curtains or rugs; sprinkle
in some artwork to give your rooms a
personal touch; or hang a mirror to help
give the illusion of more space.
