CYCLING IN Christchurch is
at an all-time high with more
than four million trips clocked
in 2024.
The city council’s cycle
counter logged a record
breaking 4.08m counts across
31 locations.
“It’s great to see our network
of cycleways being well used
with the number steadily increasing
year on year from 3.8
million in 2023 and 3.6 million
in 2022,” city council head of
transport Lynette Ellis said.
“February was the standout
month, with 405,000 trips
clocked – the highest month
since March 2021 and also the
shortest month of the year.”
Another significant milestone
was achieved when the counter
on the Antigua St Bridge near
Christchurch Hospital recorded
500,000 trips for the year the
first time ever.
“Hagley Park is a hive of
cyclist activity. There are three
cycle counters around Hagley
Park, with each averaging
around 420,000 cyclists counted
per year,” said Ellis.
The data gives a longterm
picture of how cycling
is tracking by showing a
percentage change of how much
the counts have increased or
decreased compared to the same
time last year.
World’s
ugliest
lawn
A BIRDLINGS Flat resident has
taken top honours in a global
competition to find the world’s
ugliest lawn.
Now in its second year,
the World’s Ugliest Lawn
competition rewards lawn
owners for not watering their
grass and flowerbeds. It is part
of a global initiative to save
water.
Leisa Elliot’s winning lawn
in Birdlings Flat is subject to
strong wind and little rainfall.
Plentiful cacti, well suited to
the conditions, surround the
patchy yellow lawn. Elliot has
also featured in prominent UK
newspaper The Guardian for her
‘accolade’.
“I live in a small coastal
community,” Elliott told The
Guardian.
“Our drinking water is
pumped from a well in nearby
Kaitorete Spit. In my mind,
drinking water is drinking
water, not watering-the-lawn
water.”
Elliot’s garden was a testament
to resilience, the jury said in its
Court appearance for attempted kidnapping
A MAN will appear in court
today charged with attempted
kidnapping after allegedly
trying to pull a young person
into his vehicle in Sydenham.
Detective James Bourne
said the incident happened
on January 2 about 3pm on
the northern end of Tennyson
St. The accused has been on
bail pending today’s court
appearance.
Police had earlier said they
were investigating after a young
person reported a man made
a “suspicious approach” and
allegedly tried to get them into
his vehicle.
The youngster got away
unharmed and told their parent
about the incident, which was
reported to police an hour later.
The man was arrested on
Friday and charged with
attempted kidnapping.
“As part of our ongoing
inquiries, we would like to
hear from anyone who was in
the Tennyson St area between
2.50pm and 3.10pm on January
2,” Bourne said.
“If you have any information
that could help our inquiries,
please update us online now
or call 105 and please use the
reference number 250102/6559.”
GRASS ISN’T GREENER: Leisa Elliot’s lawn in Birdlings Flat has
been crowned the ugliest in the world.
announcement.
“In a region known for
its fierce coastal winds and
low rainfall, Leisa’s lawn is a
powerful statement.”
The contest began in Gotland,
Sweden, as a stunt to promote
water conservation on the
island. The competition’s
website says it is a way to inspire
positive change and show
sustainability doesn’t have to be
boring.
“I have aimed at creating a
garden that primarily looks
after itself, making its own
natural rhythm,” Elliot told The
Guardian.
“Mother Nature does the
watering here. When the rain
comes, the transformation is
stunning. An oasis after a desert
is a sight to behold.”
She said many birds
congregate by the pond,
including bellbirds, fantails,
silver eyes, finches, blackbirds
and starlings.
Elliott told The Guardian she
found out about the competition
through a morning breakfast
show.
“We were experiencing abovenormal
summer temperatures
and my lawn sure fitted the
competition bill.”
The jury, composed of
Gotland residents, voted
unanimously for Elliott’s lawn.
“Her lawn may not win beauty
contests, but it wins hearts for
its message of sustainability and
adaptability.
“The ground, parched and
textured by the elements, is
dotted with natural, weathercarved
indentations and
adorned with the muted colours
of a landscape that thrives
without human interference.”
‘I’m glad Christchurch is a
bit more cyclist-friendly’
• From page 1
The information captured
from any new cycle counters is
captured for 12 months before
being included in comparisons.
In December 2024 the average
daily cycle count was 10,000,
an increase of 7% on December
2023.
“It’s a great snapshot into how
bike numbers are trending over
the years and means we’re not
simply counting more cyclists
because the number of counters
has grown,” Ellis said.
Elderly couple Helen and Samuel
Tully are part of the cycling
craze and try to bike together
about twice a week.
“It’s nice, there’s a lot of people
biking. We just think it’s great.
Very good for keeping us healthy
and young,” said Helen.
The Papanui couple utilise cycleways
and lanes to reach cafes
and restaurants in the city most
weekends.
Samuel said more cycleways
are great for cyclists like them,
but he understands why others
might have concerns.
“They (city council) spend a lot
of money on that sort of stuff. It
might be time to focus on roads
as well, but I’m not sure.”
David McNaughton, 66, of
Cashmere, was surprised so
many are taking up cycling.
“People are so attached to their
cars, but I do think cycling is a
good way to get around,” he said.
He bikes 20min to work in
the central city about two days a
week.
“I’m glad Christchurch is a bit
more cyclist-friendly these days,”
he said.
‘Residents’ voices do
make a difference’
New hospital
theatre opens
FORTÉ HOSPITAL’S new
operating theatre opened
on Monday, providing
Christchurch with a significant
increase in surgery capacity.
The opening of Theatre Five
means Forté Health can offer
1800 more surgeries a year – a
25% increase on its current
capacity.
The expansion at the Peterborough
St hospital has also
enabled Forté to hire 17 new
healthcare workers and engage
six new surgeons across multiple
specialties including general,
orthopaedics, urology and Otorhinolaryngology
(ENT).
While Forté Health caters for
private surgeries, it also works
in partnership with Health New
Zealand offering surgical space
to the public system.
Chief executive of Forté
Health Michael Woodhouse
said while the added surgery
capacity in Canterbury can help
to ease pressure on the public
sector, the case for expansion
isn’t reliant on publicly funded
cases being undertaken in the
new theatre.
“It’s no secret our health
system is struggling to manage
the surgical needs of our community,
and its future is reliant
on investment across numerous
layers, including the private
sector.
“The demand justifies the
financial investment for the
health of Cantabrians. Every
patient that is cared for in a
private facility is one fewer
patient that needs care in the
public sector,” he said.
• From page 1
Simons is undecided on
whether to sell assets.
‘We need to examine the issue
and do a business case. We can’t
know if it’s a good idea until
that’s done.”
His highest priority if elected
is limiting rates increases by
focusing on the “must haves.”
Rates increased 9.9% this year.
From a Riccarton Ward
perspective, Simons said
“housing intensification is still
important, but traffic, parking
and community safety are real
concerns”.
Getting rates increases closer
to the inflation rate is a goal
he believes could be achieved
through less “unnecessary
projects”.
While supportive of cycleways,
Simons said the city council has
spent too much on them.
“Many of the designs have
been way too elaborate. We could
save a lot of money or probably
build double the amount of
cycleways if we kept it simple,”
he said.
He said the $683m Te Kaha
stadium, of which the council
funds $453m, the Government
the rest, will be an asset for the
city.
In September 2022, Simons
helped organise a protest against
PC14 when it was rejected by the
city council.
Christchurch became the only
city in New Zealand refusing
to notify its plan, but was later
forced by the Government to
reintroduce it.
“It was a brave and dramatic
decision,” said Simons.
“It convinced me residents’
voices do make a difference.”
He said some community
members then encouraged him
to run for city council.
“I understand this city very
well and my heart is in it because
Christchurch is my home.”
Simons also believes “age and
experience” along with a career
as a journalist has prepared him
for council.
“I’m a curious person. I like
to ask a lot of questions and
challenge authority occasionally
when I think something is not
quite right,” he said.
Having lived near Riccarton
Bush for nearly 30 years, Simons
continued to fear PC14 would
lead to three to four storey
buildings near the heritage site.
“There could have been a
wall of buildings around the
perimeter of Riccarton Bush. It
just didn’t make any sense,” he
said.
Simons said the modified PC14
is better for Christchurch.
“It’s still far from perfect,
but we’ve hopefully prevented
wholesale and random
densification of our suburbs.”
Simons helped convince the
city council to establish the
Riccarton Bush Interface Area.
The zone restricts high density
zoning from being built around
the site.
The city council’s PC14
decision from last month is
awaiting final approval from
Housing Minister Chris Bishop.
Simons says he is not opposed
to intensification, but does
believe it should be limited to the
central city for now.
Advocates for intensification
say it will lower house prices,
improve housing choice and
accommodate a growing
population.
Tony Simons spent
the past two-and-ahalf
years successfully
fighting against
suburban intensification
in the Riccarton Bush
area. Reporter Dylan
Smits finds out more
about him
A CAREER in radio journalism
may have sparked Tony Simons’
interest in grassroots advocacy.
“As a reporter you get to
make a difference when you’re
telling stories and see how that
improves people’s knowledge. I
think that might have helped my
interest in local issues,” Simons
said.
He cites covering the 1984
Southland floods and helping to
start Plains FM as its first general
manager as career highlights.
The Southland floods forced
5000 people to leave their
homes and killed thousands of
livestock.
“It’s definitely ingrained in my
mind. I remember half the city
(Invercargill) being underwater
and just going out with a
microphone and recorder to
interview people.
“I remember people just
shovelling mud out of their
homes and when I went live
on Morning Report, I actually
couldn’t speak and got really
choked up.”
He remembers it as “not his
finest hour” for professionalism,
but hopes it left an impact on
those listening.
Simons studied journalism
at Wellington Polytechnic and
got his first radio job in Rotorua
before stints at various RNZ
newsrooms in Christchurch,
Dunedin and Wellington
between 1981 and 1987.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Only three months after
starting work as a reporter,
Simons had an opportunity to
interview then-Prime Minister
Robert Muldoon.
A search and rescue operation
had located two girls lost in the
bush and Simons asked Muldoon
for his thoughts.
“I got an opportunity to stick
a mic at him but I did the things
journalists are always taught
not to do which is to ask closed
questions. He was a pretty prickly
sort of guy and just responded
‘yes’ and ‘no’ so it was unusable.”
In 1987, Simons was asked by
CPIT to manage Plains FM, a new
community access radio station
for central Canterbury.
“It was quite out of my comfort
zone and on a small budget,
but it was good fun. It gave a
lot of community groups and
volunteers the opportunity to
broadcast.”
In 1990, he returned to radio
news in management roles for
RNZ in Christchurch and at
Radio Marlborough.
Simons then started working
at CPIT in 1996. He taught some
radio journalism courses but
his main role was as business
development and relationship
manager.
He later became head of the
New Zealand Broadcasting
School at CPIT, later Ara, from
2010 to 2021.
“It felt like the natural
progression of my career and it
was a great job. I’m proud that
the school produces some of our
best broadcasters in radio and
television,” he said.
As head of the school, Simons
focused on instilling the values
of integrity and objectivity in the
students.
“I always aimed to teach that the
story comes first and any personal
views need to be put aside.”
Speed
limits to
be raised
• By Dylan Smits
MOTORISTS will know which
speed limit reductions will be
reversed in Christchurch in
about a month.
City council transport operations
manager Stephen Wright
said staff
are working
through the
Government’s
new speed
limit rule.
He said the
roads that
will get speed limit increases
will be known by mid-February.
The new speed limit rule came
in on October 30 and requires
road control authorities like the
city council to reverse speed
limit reductions made since
January 1, 2020.
Wright said there was no time
frame yet to restore the speed
limits, but Transport Minister
Simeon Brown has set a deadline
of July 1. The city council’s
safe speed neighbourhoods
programme reduced the speed
limit to 30km/h around schools
and residential streets across
the city. The new rule requires
30km/h variable speed limits to
be placed outside schools.
Now the world’s first
Wikipedian-at-large is
determined to make the
peninsula accessible to the
$50,000 to do it.
The central city resident was
set to host his first public edita-thon
yesterday at Tūranga to
arm people and organisations
with the tools to improve
their coverage in the online
encyclopedia.
“It’s an area of cultural
significance, a geographically
and biologically unique
environment, and it attracts
thousands of tourists every year.
“Despite this, Banks Peninsula
is poorly covered on Wikipedia,
the 11th most-visited website
in the world and the first port
of call for anyone seeking
information, whether human or
AI.”
Dickison cited the Lyttelton
Museum, which was demolished
after the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, but still exists
virtually with its historic photo
collection.
“When I see organisations
for me to help empower small
don’t get the funding that big
museums do,” said Dickison.
His relationship with
Wikipedia started in 2015 when
he was working as a museum
curator in Whanganui.
With no real budget to
publicise the collections, he
turned to the encyclopedia for
help.
“I realised I could put
information and photographs
into Wikipedia that would
increase the visibility of all the
stuff we were doing.”
He started running public
workshops to improve the
quality of the articles and started
running events to teach people
how to edit the encyclopedia
content.
Dickison was hooked.
“I realised I was enjoying this
more than I was enjoying being a
museum curator.”
In 2018, Dickison’s
Wikipedian-at-large job did
not even exist. So he pitched
the idea for the position to the
Wikimedia Foundation in the
United States and received the
$50,000 grant.
“The goal is to mentor
other people to learn how to
do this sort of job so that it can
be spread around and given out
to different people each year.
“It’s a huge improvement over
how things were five years ago.”
‘Some old Pakeha
men’ complaint
not upheld
• By Daniel Alvey
A COMPLAINT about a
Canterbury deputy mayor who
said the Treaty Principles Bill has
the backing of “some old Pakeha
men that are living in the past”
has not been upheld.
Selwyn District
Council’s Malcolm
Lyall made the
comment during a
council debate on
whether the council
should make a
submission against
the controversial
bill.
Lyall’s claim
Malcolm
Lyall
prompted Selwyn resident Stuart
McKinlay to lodge a formal complaint
with the council’s chief
executive Sharon Mason and
Mayor Sam Broughton.
He claimed it breached the
council’s code of conduct and
was racist in nature.
“I was offended by this remark,
as I am sure many other residents
of Selwyn District would be if
they were aware of what he said,”
McKinlay told The Star.
The comment came before
councillors voted to make a submission
against the bill. Submissions
closed on Tuesday.
In his complaint, McKinlay
said Lyall’s comment breached
the following behavioural standards:
Bullying, discrimination,
disrepute, respect, and relationships
with the public.
But Lyall has been cleared
by Mason and Broughton who
deemed his comment did not
meet the threshold for a code of
conduct breach nor did it bring
the council into disrepute.
“The language used was in the
context of the broader debate
during the Treaty Principles
paper discussion. Therefore, no
further action was taken,” Mason
said.
Lyall, who is Pakeha, told The
Star he took the complaint as “a
badge of honour” that reflected
his opposition to the bill. Lyall
said his comment was directed at
Hobson’s Pledge, a lobby group
founded by former Act leader
Don Brash in 2016.
The city council and Environment
Canterbury also made
submissions against the bill.
Submissions closed at 1pm
on Tuesday.
Father of 11 loses appeal
for early release from jail
• By Ric Stevens
A MAN with 163 convictions
has lost a bid to be released from
jail early because of the effect his
imprisonment is having on his
11 children.
David Rata Bagley, 43, has a
25-year criminal history of shoplifting
and dishonesty, although
he also has a conviction for family
violence due to an incident in
which he pulled the children’s
mother off her feet by her hair
and kicked her in the head.
In February 2024, the
Christchurch man was sent to
prison for two years and four
months for wilful damage,
threatening to kill, assault on a
person in a family relationship
and 11 charges of theft.
That sentence was later
reduced to two years and two
months on appeal by the High
Court, which considered that his
treatment in state care as a child
had “causatively contributed” to
his offending.
But Bagley then tried to
get a further discount on his
jail term, to reflect what he
said was the negative impact
of his imprisonment on his
11 children, aged between 18
months and 17 years.
The High Court turned him
down on that score, but he took
his case to the Court of Appeal.
He was trying to get his
sentence reduced to two years,
which would lead to his immediate
release as people serving
two years or less are usually
freed after serving half of the
sentence and Bagley has been in
jail for more than a year, including
time on remand.
The Court of Appeal also
declined his appeal, meaning he
will remain subject to release by
the decision of the Parole Board
or when he has served his time.
PHOTO: GETTY
The Parole Board has seen
him twice so far, in April and
September 2024, and declined to
release him both times.
He will next be seen by the
board in May. His statutory
release date is in September.
Bagley’s latest incident of
offending was in June 2023,
when he was living apart from
the mother of his children and
sleeping rough in Hagley Park.
“Standing back, we see this
case as falling well below the
high threshold which would
justify this court conducting a
further review of Mr Bagley’s
sentence,” the Court of Appeal
decision said.
1980s – SUMMERTIMES FESTIVAL
For those remaining in the
city over the holidays, the
SummerTimes Festival offered
plenty of entertainment. And it
was mostly free.
From music to circus, puppeteers
to teddy bears, the
four-month festival brought
artists to town from around the
country and overseas.
The city council initiative
started in the 1980s and ran
until 2021, when Covid took
hold. It has since been replaced
with individual events such as
NYE/NYE Kids Countdown,
Kite Day, Summer Sundays and
outdoor movies.
In 1986, government funding
cuts to temporary employment
scheme Project Employment
Programme left the future of
the festival uncertain, just as it
was taking off.
SummerTimes controlling
supervisor Mary Williams
told The Press the festival had
employed 70 people over the
previous four years, thanks
to the programme, with the
majority taking up other arts
jobs afterwards. The budget for
the 1986 festival was $350,000,
with wages a big part.
In a letter to the editor,
Trevor Nash thought criticism
of the scheme’s demise
“appeared to be embracing the
pervasive handout mentality
that corrupts art”.
“History has shown that art
from the state lacks quality because
of the employer-employee
relationship. Rather than
being vital and challenging, it
becomes a cynical shadow of
what art should be. Art can and
must survive by the virtue of its
own quality.”
But other letter writers
showed gratitude for the festival.
“For families, especially
low-income ones, to be able
to remain in the city over
summer, and to have such
a range of activities and
entertainment available, has
been greatly appreciated,”
N Cresswell wrote.
Burnside High School
Head Prefect Ron Livne expresses his
thorough gratitude towards Burnside
High School and all the doors that it has
opened for him over the years. He is heavily
involved in the extensive music programme,
and likes to make the most of the academic
opportunities available, participating in
competitions and courses inside and outside
of the school. “It is hard to put into words
how grateful I am for Burnside’s ability to
push you past your potential and allow you
to find and strengthen what you’re good
at and what you love. Through Burnside,
I have toured New Zealand, tried new
sports, learnt new instruments, gained
valuable skills, and satisfied my academic
ambition.” Ron has learnt through being a
Social Leader and South Division’s Deputy
Prefect in 2024 the impact that forming
connections with other students can have,
and the responsibilities tied to leadership.
So, as 2025’s Head Boy, Ron hopes to give
back to his school by keeping its atmosphere
positive and inclusive while encouraging
everybody to ignite and harness their
ambition. “At Burnside, everything is on
offer; it’s just up to you to take it.”
Head Prefect Kate Dawson attributes
Burnside High School’s excellent reputation
to the school’s vast co-curricular offerings,
saying, “Burnside’s size allows us to offer
an exceptional range of activities across
academics, sports, arts, culture, social
initiatives, and service.” Reflecting on
personal experience, she shares, “I came to
Burnside with a passion for water sports,
having spent my first twelve years as a
swimmer and water polo player. Since then,
I’ve explored new activities like underwater
hockey and open-water racing.” Beyond
the pool, Burnside’s leadership and service
programs have also been impactful. A
Values Leader in junior years and South
Division Head Prefect in 2024, she has
connected with peers and given back to
the wider community. “It’s inspiring to see
everything Burnside offers, and as part of
the Head Prefect team this year, I hope to
encourage students to explore these cocurricular
opportunities and reach their full
potential, both in and out of the classroom.”
New to New Zealand and Burnside High
School in 2023 after living most of her life
in the snowy Northeast of the USA, Deputy
Head Prefect Katherine Watts is eager to get
involved in everything Burnside has to offer.
Through extracurriculars such as World
Scholar’s Cup, Magna Voce, and Debate
Club, she has expanded her knowledge
and understanding of the school’s values,
students, and structure. Additionally, her
roles as a junior Values Leader, North
Division Values Prefect, and student
leader of Rainbow Club have allowed her
to connect with other students through a
variety of leadership positions. She believes
in leading by example: “My goal as a Deputy
Head Prefect is to help foster Burnside’s
sense of values and community, and to work
as much as I can with the other students of
the school. To be a successful leader, you
have to be a friend first.”. She hopes to be a
role model, as well as a friendly face, and to
help lead the school well over the coming
year.
Deputy Head Prefect Ryan Yoon feels
immense gratitude toward Burnside High
School for the opportunities it has provided
him to grow academically, athletically,
and personally. A dedicated athlete, Ryan
played basketball from Year 9 to Year 11,
competed in korfball, and has represented
the school in road races and cross-country
nationals in 2021 and 2024. In leadership,
Ryan has made a significant impact, serving
as a Sports and Values Leader during his
junior years and as South Division Values
Prefect in 2024. His commitment to
sustainability is reflected in his involvement
as an Environment Leader and member
of the Environment Group from 2021 to
2024. “Burnside has shaped me in countless
ways, teaching me the value of hard work,
leadership, and teamwork. I’ve learned that
no challenge is too great when you have the
right mindset and a supportive community.”
Ryan shares, as Deputy Head Prefect,
he hopes to inspire his peers to seize the
opportunities available and make the most
of their time at Burnside. “Together, we can
make a positive impact and help each other
grow.”
Kahikatea Kirkwood
Intermediate School
Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate is a
very well resourced school where all of our
practices are based on solid educational
foundations. We have nine specialist
Technology classrooms, a safe and vibrant
community feel, and stable professional
leadership.
We are an inclusive school with mixed
ability classes, programmes to extend
and enrich all of our children and lots
of opportunities in sport, cultural and
academic areas.
Because we are a state, co-educational
intermediate school, everything we do,
everything we have, and all of our plans for
the future are designed for children aged
10 -13 years old – our Year 7 and 8 students
often called the ‘emerging adolescent’.
Last week, Merrin School students
from Years 5-8 dazzled audiences with
their vibrant production, Travel Guides.
The show took viewers on a whirlwind
journey to stunning destinations like
Greece, Portugal, Ireland, the USA, and
South Korea, each brought to life through
energetic performances, colorful costumes,
and captivating storytelling.
Every student played a role, whether
on stage with speaking parts or behind
the scenes crafting props and managing
technical elements. The teamwork and
creativity were on full display, with three
stellar performances: two evening shows
and a daytime matinee.
‘I liked talking in front of an audience
and the scenes that were put together’ -
Tremain (a.k.a Kevin)
These wonderful children are going
through a real growth spurt: intellectually,
emotionally and physically. The staff at
Kahikatea Kirkwood choose to work with
these children, and recognise the very
special attributes and challenges of this
age group. High standards of behaviour
are maintained and our children are well
known for being respectful, polite and
pleasant.
Our children choose to come here
after seeing something about our school
that appeals to them, and I believe our
reputation is second to none. Come and
visit our school and see for yourself what
makes Kahikatea Kirkwood the great
school it is.
Amateur champ’s dream a
reality after NZ Open invite
• By Sam Coughlan
“IT’S A DREAM come true.”
That’s top young golfer Cooper
Moore’s response to being
invited to play in his first New
Zealand Open at Millbrook,
Arrowtown, next month.
At 16, he will be the youngest
player in the tournament.
But as an amateur, he isn’t
eligible for a share of the tournament’s
$2m prize money.
He will be one of 156 golfers
playing – including LIV Golf’s
Ben Campbell and Steven Alker,
who plays on the PGA Tour
Champions.
Moore has so far won the New
Zealand amateur championship,
tied for second at the Junior
Open in Scotland and finished
eighth at the Asia-Pacific amateur
championships.
He said he couldn’t wait to play
in the NZ Open, which starts on
February 27.
“It’s been a goal of mine for a
couple of years now and to get
the opportunity feels amazing,”
he said.
Moore, 7, with Lydia Ko at
Clearwater in 2016.
BIG TIME: Cooper Moore will compete in his first New Zealand Open next month.
PHOTO: SAM COUGHLAN
“At the same time I don’t just
want to be there to make up
the numbers, I want to prepare
well and give myself every opportunity
to play as well as I can
and compete against some great
players.”
Moore’s passion for the game
and drive to improve himself is
clear.
His interest in golf was sparked
when he was four and joined dad
Jayden, himself a keen player, at
the driving range.
“ I just fell in love with it,” he
said.
He will start year 12 at St
Bede’s College later this month,
but estimates he took more than
60 days off last year for golf.
“ (The school) is really helpful
and they’re good with that, they
help me catch up whenever I get
back.
“Teachers enjoy me travelling,
they don’t get irritated if I’m behind
on schoolwork, because I’ll
do it as soon as I get back.”
Moore does two gym sessions
a week, plus spends about 20
hours a week training during the
school year. He has memberships
at Clearwater, and the Waitikiri
and Russley clubs.
It’s a heavy commitment, but
one he is happy to bear.
“ I used to spend more time
with friends, like on weekends
I don’t really have time for like
sleepovers and stuff, I always
get up and practise or play golf.
Most Sundays I’ve got golf going
on, especially in the summer,”
he said.
He isn’t sure what his future
holds, with one option taking
up a scholarship to a US college.
Plenty have reached out, but
can’t make formal offers until he
turns 17 in June.
Another possibility is moving
to Australia and trying to gain a
tour card, with an eye to turning
professional in his early 20s –
still more than four years away.
With options in front of
him, Moore isn’t getting ahead
‘It’s been a goal of mine
for a couple of years now
and to get the opportunity
feels amazing,’
– Cooper Moore
of himself. “ Whatever’s going
to suit me best. At the moment,
if I had to make a decision on
the spot, I’d probably try and go
with Aussie. I don’t have much
interest in the schooling side of
college, I’d much rather just play
golf and see how good I can get.
“But also the facilities at
college and all that makes me
want to go there, it’s a tough
decision.”
But whichever pathway he
chooses, he will have a hefty
amount of support around him.
“ He’s got Kazuma (Kobori)
that he can talk to, or other
mates, like Zack Swanwick or
Zach May, who’ve gone the
college route,” said Jayden.
“From our perspective,
it’s really good to know
that whatever decision he
makes, he’s got our support, but
he’s also got New Zealand Golf’s
support. Their goal is to provide
him with the opportunities to
live that dream of being a pro
golfer.”
TALENT: Moore, 16, is the defending NZ amateur champion.
In Brief
Havili takes reins as
Crusaders captain
David Havili has been named
as the new Crusaders captain.
The 30-year-old midfielder was
yesterday unveiled as skipper
for the 2025 season. He replaces
All Blacks captain Scott Barrett.
Havili has been Crusaders
vice-captain since 2020. He has
played 128 for the Super Rugby
side and 30 tests for the All
Blacks. Barrett relinquished the
Crusaders captaincy to decrease
his workload after leading both
sides last year. The Crusaders
finished ninth last season under
head coach Rob Penney. Havili’s
first game as captain will be in
a pre-season match against the
Blues at Kirwee on January 31.
The Crusaders Super Rugby
Pacific campaign starts at home
against the Hurricanes on
February 14.
Second national golf
croquet title
United’s Logan McCorkindale
has won his second consecutive
national title at the golf
croquet open championships
in Nelson. He beat Auckland’s
Josh Freeth in the best-of-five
sets final, coming from 2-1
down. It was his second title of
the week. He also claimed the
doubles title with his brother
Reece, beating fellow
Cantabrians Chris and
Jenny Clarke in the final.
Cashmere’s Josh Winter, Myles
Duggan, Levi Franks and Mikey
Lauer (Nelson) made the semifinals
of the doubles competition.
Franks finished fourth in the
singles.
Andrews cycles
to victory
Olympic double gold medallist
Ellesse Andrews claimed two
titles at the Christchurch Track
Cycling Club’s summer carnival
at Denton Park on Saturday. The
carnival saw a host of Olympians
compete, including members of
the women’s endurance team who
claimed silver in Paris. Andrews
won the keirin and 2000m at the
carnival, while Shaane Fulton
took out the 1600m wheelrace.
Nicole Shields won the women’s
10km race. Sam Dakin took out
the men’s 450m and 1000m and
Tom Sexton won the 15km race -
which took place on Sunday after
Saturday’s rain forced it to be
postponed.
Cantabrian prepares
for T20 World Cup
Canterbury cricketer Darcy-Rose
Prasad and her New Zealand
teammates will begin their
under-19 women’s T20 World
Cup campaign in Malaysia
against South Africa at 7.30pm
on Saturday. Prasad is the only
Cantabrian in the 15-strong
squad, although Kate Irwin
(Auckland) and Emma McLeod
(Central Districts) play wqith her
played for New Zealand in a
tri-series against Sri Lanka and
Australia in Queensland last year.
She scored 23 not out in New
Zealand’s first warm-up match
on Monday, which they lost by 13
runs to the United States.

Career set to snowball in Alaska
BIG TASK: Evie Leeson (right)
A WOOLLEN hat and a big
jacket is awaiting top young
basketballer Evie Leeson when
she embarks on her scholarship
in the United States this month.
The 18-year-old is Alaskabound,
where the average high
in January is -5 deg C and the
average low -11 deg C.
“ I expect it to be very cold,
that’s one thing,” she said.
“The coach told me he’s going
to give me a woollen hat and a
big jacket.”
Leeson has taken up a
basketball scholarship at the
University of Alaska Anchorage.
It was one of five offers she
had on the table. The others
were from Gardner-Webb
University, North Carolina, Le
Moyne University, New York,
Weber State University, Utah,
and the University of Texas Rio
Grande Valley.
Leeson will meet Ashlyn
Rean at the University of Alaska
Anchorage who joined the team
in 2024.
Rean returned home in June
last year to play alongside
Leeson on the national titlewinning
Canterbury under-20
side.
“ Having her there, it’s like that
sense of home so it’ll be good,”
Leeson said.
Rean said she was excited
Leeson will be joining her.
Said Rean: “Evie and I grew
up in the same place and have
played with and against
each other. So to end
up at the same college
in Alaska of all places
is really awesome,” she
said.
“It’s a really cool place
though, it feels like it’s
own unique world.
Walking home from
training and coming
across a moose outside your
dorm isn’t something you get in
“You really do get used to it
and it isn’t as bad as it
Leeson excelled at St
Margaret’s College and
She played as a forward in
the senior A side for three
years, while she has also
represented Canterbury
under-20s and New
Zealand under-18s.
It was with the national side
went viral after she was given
Leeson, who is no slouch
disadvantage as Zhang scored
36 points and claimed 13
rebounds.
A compilation of Zhang’s
performances at the
tournament, including clips of
her playing against Leeson, has
been viewed more than three
million times on Tik Tok.
“ Oh my god, I don’t even
know if I reached her shoulder,”
Leeson said.
“My coach said: ‘You’re going
to have fun with that, aren’t
you?’ And there was a bet going
around our team – if you block
her, you get 20 bucks, but no one
did.”
Leeson will study dietetics at
university.
“ I want to do the sports side of
nutrition.”
And while she isn’t eligible to
play until the start of the new
season in August, she wants to
throw herself into training and
impress the coaches.
“Coach said when I get there,
I’m definitely going to make an
impact.
“So I’d like to train and do
classes and stuff, then come
back in May, June, and then go
again in August.”
Knuckling down and some tips on nutrition and weight loss
In week 3 the early excitement of the City 2 Surf project you have undertaken is wearing off. You may not have
sensed a big improvement in fitness levels yet and other commitments are getting in the way of training.
After your determined start the first doubts set in: “Can I do this?” This is the time to knuckle down. You
need another 2 or 3 consistent weeks before you notice a significant improvement in fitness and energy
levels. Once that happens you will be well on your way. The best time of day to exercise is early morning.
It is good to get it out of the way and it will energise you for the rest of the day. Later in the day you might
just feel that little bit of fatigue or things crop up which will tempt you to say “tomorrow is another day….”
This can easily become habit and before you know it you have lost one or 2 training sessions every week.
Of course you might have a good reason for not being able to get out early. Other times of the day for your
training session are perfectly fine too but good planning is required. A light snack (toast/bread, fruit) before your
early morning training session is generally recommended to assist your blood sugar levels. This also applies if you
exercise later in the morning or afternoon. Breakfast or a meal after training will assist with replenishing energy
stores. Exercising before going to bed might keep you awake for a while if you are a light sleeper.
To achieve this goal you
need to develop some
awareness around the
basic requirements of
exercising for health
and fitness. First and
foremost this has to do
with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To
improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have
and 1 session per week is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally
build towards between 30 and 50 minutes
with one longer session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The good thing about the programme
is that all your runs will be done at
submaximal pace, also called conversation
pace. That means a pace where you can still
talk. If you can’t talk you are going too fast
and you are likely to come to a grinding halt
sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TIP oF The weeK
If one of your goals is to lose some weight, then
this training programme will help you.
But it will only do so if you pay attention to your
nutrition at the same time. Healthy choices
include bread and or cereals for breakfast,
sandwiches or a salad for lunch and an evening
meal consisting of plenty of vegetables with
fish, chicken or lean meat. Pasta and rice are
also good staple foods for active people.
One helping and avoidance of rich desserts
will assist your weight loss. A healthy snack
mid morning and afternoon will help you get
through the day. Fruit is always an excellent
choice. Avoid fatty foods and snacks with
refined sugars. If you need help with your
nutrition or weight loss this might be a good
time to have a consultation with an expert, like
one of the Sports Clinic nutritionists.
YEAR
THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH!!
Trillo Metals Muscle Car Madness NO 35
January 25th-January 26th
Rangiora Showground
By the time this article goes to print
we are only one week to go until the
annual Muscle car show comes to town.
Early arrivals will start turning up from
next Wednesday from all over New
Zealand. We have enthusiasts coming
from the U.S.A, England and Australia.
Nearly 200 cars from the north island.
The local Rangiora club, North
Canterbury rodders always have a large
turnout of local club cars and Cam
Dave from ABFX in Dunedin
hopes to get his chopper to MCM
County club from Wellington have 14
cars entered.
Vanz Unlimited with van clubs around
the country to run their Van nationals.
This year the oldest van club in the
country, Parlour Vans from Auckland
will add to their numbers.
Another attraction this year we
have been working hard to put on a
custom chopper motorcycle display. It
is hoped to have Dave from ABFX in
Dunedin.to bring his amazing bike to
display. Choppers are basically hot rod
motorcycles.
The most popular event of the show
is the burnout competition, this year
sponsored by Towman Towing. Steve,
the owner, is building a wild new
burnout car to take on the winners from
last year. It is a tuff competition. The
pre-lims are on Saturday and Sunday are
the finals from around 1.15 p.m.
There’s something for the whole
family, how about the ‘”Rockabilly
pageant” which has several classes
including classes for
boys, girls and the
man in your life.So
here is your chance to
dress up in “glitz and
glamour” from days
gone by. Ever fancied
yourself as a ‘pinup
girl?” This event starts
at 12 noon in the big
shed.
Saturday is always
the big day with over
1,500 cars on display
and Sunday has
around 800 cars on
display. Of course
the weather also plays a big part with
these events.
That is beyond our control. Get out to
the Rangiora A&P showgrounds early
we open at 8.00 a.m. for cars on display.
Show your “Pride and Joy”, just pay the
normal gate fee but please show some
pride, clean your car and make sure it
is in show worthy condition. We would
like the ‘best of the best’ on display. We
encourage street machines, muscle cars,
classics and hot rods but if you think
your car is a bit special, please bring it
along.
Live music hits the stage from 9.30
a.m each day. We have 2
The burnouts are
super popular.
