For the curious ... mezcal. The more
interesting cousin to tequila, The Lost
Explorer Mezcal Espadín 8 is sweet and
herbaceous, with hints of red apple, ripe
fruits and a mild smoky finish. It’s best
served neat and at room temperature in a
traditional veladora - which opens slightly
at the top ... this wide mouth allows the
aromas to be enjoyed more evenly. For
the truly curious, it’s suggested you dot a
small amount of the mezcal onto the inside
of your wrist and rub in ... as the alcohol
evaporates it leaves you with the beautiful
aroma of the mezcal to appreciate. It’s also
perfect for cocktails ... try The Earthy Paloma.
Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a
highball glass, and dip into a mixture of salt
and, if you have, Tajin chilli pepper spice.
Pour 45ml mezcal and 10ml lime juice into

But don’t let that fool you … this award-winning
landscape technologist is as vibrant and resilient as the
gardens she creates.
Growing up on a farm, Lizette Nieman’s love of getting her
hands dirty began early. The smell of soil. The feeling of
playing in it. The freshly ploughed fields. Her mom’s green
thumb just further sowing the seeds for what would
become her life’s passion.
‘I had my own little patch in the garden that I enjoyed so
much. And I remember it just continually changing. Not
for any other reason than my older brother and I playing
in it with replica tractors. And getting dirty was simply the
norm,’ she laughs.
Fast forward a few decades and hundreds of gardens,
and Lizette has turned her childhood hobby into
a flourishing (see what we did there!) career. After
getting her landscaping diploma, she opened Strylitzia
Landscaping … a
nod to her maiden
name, Strydom.
And because it just
gelled so perfectly.
Today, nearly 30
years later, Lizette
and her husband
- and right hand -
Riaan, along with
their Strylitzia
fam of 20, are still
crafting some of the
dreamiest gardens
you’ll ever see.
From consultations
to installations,
they basically offer
the full package.
Whether it’s
hardscaping (think
retaining walls,
water features, or
elegant paving)
or softscaping (lush plant materials and seasonal
blooms), Lizette can transform any space into a
tranquil sanctuary.
10 Get It Magazine February 2025
If Lizette Nieman could describe herself as any
plant, it would be the Protea. Because, like this
magnificent flower, she flourishes with time,
care, and a touch of patience.
And speaking of blooms, February isn’t just for roses.
Lizette stresses the importance of feeding flowering
plants, fruit trees, and veggie patches with potassium-rich
organic fertiliser. ‘It’s essential for a vibrant display and a
good crop. And don’t forget nitrogen … it’s a key nutrient,
and heavy rains or frequent watering can wash it away,
leaving telltale yellowing on new leaves.’
‘People might think it’s a once-off makeover. But it’s so
much more than that. Each garden has to mature into
the garden designed. I also believe that the garden is
often such a beautiful testament to the relationship of
the parties involved. As it is a team effort, and it signifies
growth and time spent together.’
Her approach? Thoughtful simplicity. ‘I believe less is more,’
she explains. ‘Clean lines … often geometrical. Purposeful
spaces. And timeless elegance is what makes a garden
truly special.’
Her designs are rooted in functionality … but with
somewhat of a painter’s touch. The plants are her palette,
and the earth is her canvas. And her superpower lies in
choosing the perfect plants and colour combos.
‘Plants used in the right combinations are key to a
design. Colour truly is a passion of mine … anything from
monochrome to contrasting colours.’
‘My favourite part though, has to be seeing a design come
together. And no garden is complete without a plant that
announces spring’s arrival. My mentor, Shirley Wallington,
once taught me that if the bones of a design are solid,
it will stand the test of time. And I’ve taken that lesson
to heart.’
As we’re celebrating the month of love, Lizette
encourages garden enthusiasts to embrace the romance
of their outdoor
spaces. ‘A garden
is all about
atmosphere,’ she
says. ‘Add lighting,
water features, cosy
seating areas, and
plants that bring
you joy. Personal
touches make all
the difference.’
Dirty hands,
full heart
When Lizette isn’t
busy designing
award-winning
landscapes, she
spends time with
Riaan and their two
children, Alecia
and Stiaan. And
whether hiking,
kuiering with
friends, or dabbling
in arts and crafts,
it’s like she’s got
enough creativity and energy to last a lifetime.
She likes to stay active with CrossFit, trail running, and
hiking, all of which keep her grounded and inspired. For
Lizette, staying active isn’t just a lifestyle … it’s a survival skill.
Lizette is all about trusting her instincts and embracing
the challenges that come her way. ‘Problem-solving
inspires me. It’s about finding the best possible solutions
and then adding that touch of magic … the aesthetics
that make all the difference.’
She believes that nothing is impossible with the right
attitude. And when you’re as resilient as the Protea,
blooming in even the toughest conditions, the
possibilities truly are endless.
With her hands firmly planted in the soil and her heart in
full bloom, Lizette continues to follow her life’s passion,
one garden at a time.

Lizette’s garden pick for the
month of love
If you’re creating a romantic garden, roses
are bound to be one of the essential
flowering shrubs you plant in it. They have a
long history in our gardens, and while rose
gardens go in and out of fashion, the rose
as a flower is always popular.
We’re looking at a romantic present for your
beloved, that will give them pleasure in the
garden all summer and autumn long. And
next year too, and the year after.
Roses take only 50 days to flower. So, now
is the time to set them up for a spectacular
April … the last show for the year.
Here are some tips
for planting
• Find a bed in an open, sunny
position, which allows you to space
your roses far enough apart to ensure
good airflow. This will help to guard
against fungal diseases like black spot,
mildew and rust.
• Before planting your new roses, place
them in their bags in the desired
position. This will give you the chance
to see how the colour combinations
work and whether they are receiving
enough space and light.
• Dig a large square hole of 1m x 1m
for each rose bush. If you plant roses
in containers, make sure they have
a diameter of at least 35cm and add
plenty of moisture-retaining granules
to the potting soil.
• Add one bucket of rose planting mix
and one bucket of compost to every
bucket of garden soil taken from
the hole. Place superphosphates or
bonemeal at the bottom of each hole.
• Line the sides of the holes with
cardboard from old wine boxes
when planting roses near shrubs or
trees with invasive roots to keep out
the roots and hold the moisture in
the soil.

Art
people
Tucked away in Ruimsig is a place that feels less like an art gallery
and more like stepping into a good friend’s cosy, art-filled home.
Meet Alice Pretorius, the beating heart of Alice Art Gallery …
a woman who lives for art, people and a good glass of red wine.
Alice Pretorius’ love affair with art started at 21 when she bought her very first piece. That one
painting lit a spark that eventually turned her walls, and her life, into a canvas of creativity. Fast
forward a few decades, and this passion project is now a thriving gallery loved by both artists
and collectors.
But she didn’t exactly take the pretty, paint-splattered road from the start. She kicked off her
career with a BSc in Computer Science (yes, really). From coding to door-to-door sales, then to
running a framing shop (to reframe that first painting), Alice eventually reframed her life - literally
and figuratively - when she opened the gallery in 1990. Her first big-name artist, Father Frans
Claerhout, who not only exhibited but became a dear friend over the years.
Today, Alice Art Gallery showcases works from some of South Africa’s most celebrated artists.
Think Este Mostert, Johan Smit and Cornelius Bosch (who she met by chance under a tree in
Graskop) to name just a few. From there, the artists found her.
‘But it’s not just about famous names’ Alice says. ‘I’m also passionate about giving up-and-coming
talent a platform. Which is why we host frequent Art in the Garden events. It’s like a launchpad
for fresh voices, offering a chance to learn, grow, and thrive in the art world.
‘It’s very difficult to move from painting as a hobby to painting as an occupation. And over
time, I have witnessed many artists developing their style over time to become some of our
bestselling artists in the gallery.’
For her, art is an experience. Especially at the gallery. She wants everyone to feel at home, whether
they’re seasoned collectors or just dipping a toe into the art world. Oh, and while you’re soaking
up everything artsy, don’t miss the Harvest Café. A foodie haven run by the talented Chef Danika
van der Walt. With its fresh vibe and lovely menu, it’s become a reason on its own to stop by.
She believes everyone has a spark of creativity … it’s just about finding your medium. For her,
that spark is connecting with people, discovering new artists, and helping clients find that one
perfect piece of art. And yes, she’s still an avid collector herself, always buying with her heart.
When she’s not at the gallery, and has a moment or two to spare, she loves spending it with her
family - four fiercely independent kids and a beloved granddaughter, Emma Sophia, as well as
maintaining her backyard chicken empire (what started with two chicks is now a full-blown coop
of 40), diving, fishing and travelling with friends. Which makes sense really, as she was diagnosed
with ADHD later in life. Instead of seeing it as a challenge, she’s embraced it as her superpower.
Fueling her creativity, fearlessness, and knack for seeing patterns where others see chaos.
So, what’s next? A long-held dream is about to come to life. A sculpture garden at the gallery, set
to open this year. And knowing Alice, it’s bound to be something extraordinary.
From her first painting to building a gallery that’s a second home to artists and collectors, Alice
has painted a life full of passion, connection, and a whole lot of colour. If you haven’t visited yet,
consider this your official invitation. Because, as Alice herself says, they’re still the best-kept secret
in the West Rand.

Q&A with Alice
Some of the most well-known
artists to have graced the
gallery with their work?
Adriaan Boshoff, Clearhout,
Portchie, Michael Heyns and
Hennie Niemann Snr.
Three questions new collectors
should ask themselves before
buying art?
Firstly, do I love it? It’s the most
important question. When
clients become collectors, other
questions will arise like does it fit
my current collection or will I get a
return on this investment?
Your personal art style?
It takes a long time to build
a great collection. My private

Portchie, Michael Heyns and
Adriaan Boshoff. However, I have
an astronomical amount of artists
hanging from corner to corner of
every wall in my home.

Text: Nicole Sherwin, founder Eco Diva Natural Superfood Skincare www.ecodiva.co.za
The beauty industry is constantly
evolving, with trends that push the
boundaries of skincare and makeup
innovation. One of the latest and
most exciting movements is the rise
of superfood makeup—a perfect
fusion of natural skincare and
cosmetics designed to nourish the
skin while enhancing beauty. But
what exactly is superfood makeup,
and why is it poised to be the next
big trend in beauty?
What is superfood makeup?
Superfood makeup is a category of
cosmetics formulated with nutrientrich
ingredients traditionally found
in the wellness world. Think of the
same superfoods you add to your
smoothies—like chia seeds, baobab,
matcha, and cacao—but now they’re
in your foundation, lip balm, and even
your mascara. These supercharged
ingredients are rich in vitamins,
minerals, antioxidants, and essential
fatty acids, offering benefits beyond
just surface-level beautification.
Superfood makeup goes beyond
typical beauty products, delivering
skincare benefits while you wear it.
Imagine makeup that not only covers
imperfections but also hydrates,
protects, and even heals the skin.
That’s the magic of this trend—beauty
and health working together for
optimal results.
The future of superfood makeup
As more consumers lean towards
clean, ethical beauty products that

Superfood makeup ... the next big trend
Key Ingredients in Superfood Makeup
Many brands are now championing superfood-rich formulas, integrating
these powerful ingredients into their products. Some key superfoods you’ll
find include:
Baobab: Packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, baobab helps boost collagen
production, promoting firmness and elasticity.
Chia: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds provide deep hydration and help
balance the skin’s natural oil production.
Cacao: Known for its high antioxidant content, cacao fights free radicals and
keeps the skin youthful and radiant.
Moringa: This nutrient powerhouse contains vitamins A, C, and E, offering
protection from environmental stressors while nourishing the skin.
Spirulina: With its potent anti-inflammatory properties, spirulina helps calm
irritated skin and reduce redness.
The benefits of superfood makeup
The primary advantage of superfood makeup is its ability to double
as skincare. Unlike conventional makeup, which can sometimes
clog pores or irritate the skin, superfood-infused products provide a
holistic approach to beauty. Here are a few reasons why this trend is
gaining momentum:
Nourishes the skin: Superfood makeup is rich in vitamins, minerals, and
antioxidants, which work to nourish the skin from the outside in. With
consistent use, skin appears healthier, more hydrated, and glowing.
Protects against environmental damage: Ingredients like spirulina and
moringa create a protective barrier that shields the skin from pollutants
and UV damage, keeping skin resilient and youthful.
Hydrates and balances: Superfood ingredients such as chia seeds and
baobab have incredible moisturizing properties, ensuring the skin stays
hydrated throughout the day. They also balance oil production, making
superfood makeup suitable for all skin types, including oily and acneprone
skin.
Supports skin healing: Rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
properties, superfood ingredients like cacao and spirulina can speed up
the skin’s healing process, reducing redness, irritation, and inflammation.
Eco-friendly and clean: Many superfood makeup brands emphasize
sustainability and ethical sourcing, ensuring that their products are not
only good for your skin but also for the planet. Most of these products
are free from harmful chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and toxins, aligning
with the growing demand for clean beauty.

Why superfood makeup is
the next big beauty trend
In a world increasingly driven by wellness,
consumers are becoming more conscious
of what they put on their skin. The shift
towards clean, plant-based beauty is
undeniable, and superfood makeup ticks all
the boxes for the modern, health-conscious
consumer. Here’s why it’s taking over the
beauty world:
A holistic approach to beauty: Consumers
want beauty products that provide
more than just temporary solutions.
They want makeup that enhances their
skin's health while delivering long-lasting
beauty. Superfood makeup offers that
holistic approach, blending skincare and
makeup seamlessly.
Natural glow: With superfood-infused
cosmetics, the focus is on achieving a
natural, healthy glow rather than masking
imperfections. People are shifting away
from heavy, cakey makeup toward lighter,
breathable options that let their skin shine.
Sustainability: As the beauty industry
becomes more aware of environmental
concerns, brands are responding with ecoconscious,
sustainably sourced products.
Superfood makeup, often housed in
eco-friendly packaging and formulated
with ethical ingredients, meets this
growing demand.
Multi-tasking products: With busy lifestyles,
consumers love the idea of makeup that
can do more than one thing—whether it's a
foundation that also hydrates or a lip balm
that nourishes. Superfood makeup products
are multi-functional, saving time while
delivering long-term skincare benefits.
Inclusive and diverse: Superfood makeup
caters to all skin types and tones, making it
accessible to everyone. Whether you have
dry, oily, sensitive, or mature skin, there’s a

Summer skin care tip
In warmer months, whether you live
in an area with dry heat or humid
heat, it is still important to moisturise.
Your warm weather routine should
focus on using lightweight products.
Keep pores clean with a hydrating
cleanser morning and night to
remove daily impurities like makeup
and dirt. After using a gentle
hydrating cleanser, follow with a
lightweight, anti-ageing hydrator and
oil-free lotion with SPF for the day, and
a lightweight, anti-ageing hydrator
and moisturising gel cream at night.
WHY YOU SHOULD
USE A HYDRATOR
A hydrator, also known as an
essence, has a water-like consistency
and is lighter weight than creams
and lotions. Hydrators are beneficial
for all skin types and are designed to
soften and prep your face to receive
deeper moisturisation from creams
and lotions.
For oily and combination skin or
during warmer months, hydrators
can be used alone during the day
and combined with a plumping
gel cream at night. With regular
use, layering an essence or hydrator
before your moisturiser can help
delay visible signs of ageing
for all skin types.

CARE FOR YOUR HAIR
How the summer sun might be affecting your scalp and hair health
Text: ALVI ARMANI SOUTH AFRICA
When it comes to caring for one’s
skin, most people are well aware
of the need for sunscreen and
protective clothing. Yet, many neglect
a crucial area that is often exposed
to the elements: The scalp. Excessive
sun exposure can cause dryness
and irritation on this sensitive skin,
affecting the health and growth of
hair follicles over time.
According to Dr Kashmal Kalan,
Medical Director of Alvi Armani South
Africa, safeguarding the scalp from
the sun should be a key component
of anyone’s overall hair care strategy.
“The scalp is a unique area of skin. It’s
highly sensitive due to its rich network
of blood vessels and hair follicles. As
a result, prolonged exposure to UV
rays can create a hostile environment
for hair follicles, and while mild
sun exposure is normal and even
beneficial for things such as vitamin
D synthesis, unchecked and repeated
sun damage can accelerate existing
hair loss conditions.
“It’s easy to assume that hair
automatically protects the scalp, but if
you have thinning areas or if your hair
is naturally fine, the underlying scalp is
not as shielded as you might think.”
While the sun’s UV rays primarily
impact the outer layers of the skin,
these harmful effects can extend
deeper, affecting the structures that
nurture hair. Continuous exposure can
contribute to dryness, inflammation,
and free radical formation. Over
the years, these subtle injuries can
accumulate, especially in individuals
already dealing with a genetic
predisposition to conditions like
androgenetic alopecia, also known as
male and female pattern baldness.
In severe cases, such as intense
sunburns on the scalp, the skin
may even blister or peel, also
damaging hair follicles. So, although
the sun alone is unlikely to cause
permanent hair loss without
significant burning, it can exacerbate
pre-existing conditions.
PROTECTING AGAINST SEVERE
SUN EXPOSURE
Fortunately, protecting the scalp
doesn’t have to mean avoiding the
outdoors altogether. He emphasises
common-sense measures as the first
line of defence, where wearing a hat is
one of the simplest and most effective
protective methods. However, not
all hats offer equal protection. A hat
should fit comfortably, and ideally
be made from a breathable, lightreflecting
material.
“If you prefer not to wear hats or find
yourself in a situation where a hat
may not be practical, a water-resistant,
scalp-friendly sunscreen can also offer
protection. When applying sunscreen
to yourself or your children’s bodies
and faces, remember to work it into
the scalp as well.”
TIMING AND DURATION OF SUN EXPOSURE
Sun intensity varies throughout the day and changes with the seasons. What
might be safe around 5pm as the sun sets could be harmful at noon when the
sun is directly overhead.
“If the sun is at its peak and you’re feeling that unmistakable heat on your scalp,
it’s time to think about protection. Even an hour of strong midday sun can be
problematic for those with sensitive scalps or thinning hair. But, if you’re quickly
heading to the mall, for example, and know you won’t be in the sun for too long,
there’s probably nothing to be concerned about,” notes Dr Kalan.
“In contrast, if you plan on spending hours outdoors at the beach, or in the pool,
at a braai, or hiking, especially during peak summer months, take your scalp
protection as seriously as you do your skin and eyes.”
SUN EXPOSURE POST-HAIR RESTORATION PROCEDURES
For those who have recently undergone a hair transplant or other hair restoration
treatment, scalp protection is all the more critical. In the first four to six weeks
after a transplant, the healing tissue is extremely delicate. Significant sun
exposure during this period can interfere with proper healing, potentially leading
to scarring or poor graft survival. Patients need to take extra precautions during
these times.
“Even after the initial healing phase, newly transplanted follicles remain sensitive
for some time. Minimising exposure and protecting the scalp ensures that the
implants can take root and thrive. We want to create the ideal environment for
the transplanted graphs to take and grow, as giving them a healthy, protected
space will ensure better long-term results.
“So, by acknowledging the role sun exposure plays in damaging hair follicles and
accelerating hair loss, people can take proactive steps to preserve their scalp
health. Whether through smart clothing choices, applying specialised protective
creams or powders, or simply being aware of peak UV hours, these measures are
simple yet powerful,” concludes Dr Kalan.

Six common sun protection myths we need to stop believing
Nowadays we have access to a
wealth of information. Yet there is so
much misinformation available at our
fingertips that even the most sceptical
of us are at risk of being fooled. This
is particularly true when it comes to
skincare and sun protection.
From old wives tales to uninformed
advice being punted on social
media, most of us are at risk of being
exposed to a sun protection myth (or
ten!) this summer.
Lamelle Research Laboratories has
debunked a few of the most common
sun protection myths to ensure we
stay protected this season and beyond.
Myth You only need to use sun
protection when it’s sunny outside.
Truth While we are more likely to get
a painful sunburn when it is sunny
outside, did you know that the sun’s
UV rays can damage our skin even on
overcast and rainy days? UVA rays are
responsible for accelerated ageing
and cellular DNA damage, and
unfortunately for us, they are present
all year round – regardless of the
weather. This means you must apply
a good quality, broad-spectrum
SPF product daily, irrespective of
the season.
Myth The higher the SPF, the stronger
the sun protection. Truth The sun
protection factor (SPF) number on
your sunscreen tube applies to time
– not to strength. Let’s say you can
spend ten minutes outdoors before
your skin starts to burn. An SPF 30
would then protect your skin for thirty
times longer, which, in this case, is 300
minutes. If you were to apply an SPF
50, it would protect your skin for 500
minutes. The SPF number is directly
proportional to the amount of time
you are protected rather than the
strength of the protection.
Myth Sun protection products are
not safe for babies and children. Truth
Many skincare products are unsuitable
for children, and this may include some
sun protection products, but plenty of
available sunscreens are safe for young
skin. Babies and young children are
extremely vulnerable to sunburn, so it
is imperative to protect their skin with
a suitable SPF from around the age of
six months and up. If you are unsure
18 Get It Magazine February 2025
whether a sun protection product is
suitable for your child, consult your
medical practitioner or the brand
in question.
Myth Darker skin tones do not need
to apply SPF. Truth A common
misconception is that only very fair
and Caucasian skin tones need sun
protection. Even though it is not
always visible, people with darker
skin tones can still get sunburnt, and
even worse, they are also vulnerable
to developing skin cancer. The truth
is that all skin types, from the very
lightest to the very deepest need SPF
protection from the sun’s harmful
UV rays.
Myth Sunscreen is toxic and contains
harmful chemicals. Truth Modern
sunscreen formulations have come a
long way. Not only have their textures,
efficacy, and scents improved, but
brands have also worked to improve
their formulations to be beneficial and
safe. Sunscreen is safe. This is one of
the most important myths to debunk,
because when people do not use
Lamelle’s ground-breaking
Helase 50+ is a multifunctional,
anti-ageing sun
protection product that
transcends SPF by providing
better protection against the
entire spectrum of sunlight,
while the super-antioxidant
Pycnogenol destroys harmful
free radicals to decrease the
number of harmful enzymes
that cause thinning and
sagging of the skin. On top of
this, it decreases the damaging
and ageing inflammation in
the skin while actively stopping
the effects of ageing on the
skin and keeping the skin’s
immunity intact when exposed
to sunlight. It is suitable for

from dermastore.co.za
sunscreen out of fear, it is incredibly
detrimental to their health. If you are
concerned about the safety of sun
protection products, we recommend
researching to find a brand you can
trust. Look for a credible skincare
brand whose formulas are backed
by science and clinical trials and who
have a strong reputation. If you have
questions, ask them. Ask your doctor,
your therapist or the brand in question.
It’s important not to stay silent if you
have concerns.
Myth You don’t need to reapply
waterproof sunscreen. Truth The
terms waterproof and water-resistant
are somewhat misleading because
they imply that your sun protection
product remains on the skin even
after being in the water. There is
no such thing as actual waterproof
sunscreen, as all SPF products will
wash off from the skin eventually.
Experts recommend reapplying your
SPF after every swim or every two
hours if your skin stays dry.

Finding the correct sun cream
Sun protection is a crucial element of healthy skin, but finding the
right sun cream can be a challenge. Let’s face it ... some of us have
sensitive skin, others oily, we want safe options for our children
and are worried about hyperpigmentation. Hello Bioderma’s
Photoderm range ... who boast they have a product for each skin
type and each skin condition under the sun! There are options
for sensitive skin (gentle, high-protection formulas minimise
irritation and allergies), for oily acne-prone skin (lightweight, noncomedogenic
options prevent breakouts), for dry skin (hydrating
sun cream that provides essential moisture alongside protection),
for those with hyperpigmentation concerns (formulas with specific
ingredients help prevent and minimise dark spots) and for children
and babies. With most having an SPF50+, there’s a cream for blue
light protection, and those with natural, light and golden tints.
What we love ... the creams are non-sticky, water resistant, fast
absorbing and invisible. You’ll find the range, from around R245, at

SPiCY wAtERMElON gAZPACHO
A classic take on a gazpacho, with a
twist of watermelon, jalapenos and
danish feta to bring some heat and
sweetness to this cold soup. For an
adult spin, you can add in a tot or
two of vodka before serving to give it
an extra kick.
You’ll need: 350g watermelon cubes,
rind removed; 3 large tomatoes; ½
cucumber; 1 red bell pepper, pips
removed; ½ red onion, diced; 1 clove
of garlic; 3g mint leaves; 3 Tbsps
olive oil; 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar;
3 Tbsps old brown sherry; 10g
jalapenos; Salt and pepper to taste.
To garnish, you will need some
cucumber slices, mint, Danish feta
and cherry tomatoes.
To make: Add cubed watermelon,
tomatoes, cucumber, red bell pepper,
red onion, garlic, mint, olive oil, apple
cider vinegar, sherry and jalapenos to
a blender and blend until smooth.
Season the mixture and blend again
for about 30 seconds.
Set mixture aside in the refrigerator
to cool completely. In this time it will
also clear up the gazpacho and leave
the excess pulp floating at the top
to be removed before serving. Start
arranging your garnishes on a skewer
or a toothpick depending on your
serving sizes or choice of crockery. I
chose a wine glass for mine.
Once completely cooled, remove
excess pulp from the gazpacho, give
it a good stir and then pour into your
glass or bowl.

AVO AND CUCUMBER SOUP
For the avocado lovers, a light, fresh
and hydrating soup with avocado,
cucumber and lemon topped with
a fresh load of cucumber, cherry
tomatoes and red onions.
You’ll need: 1 cup of vegetable stock;
1 avocado (2 if they are small); ½
cucumber (you can choose to leave
the skin on for more roughage or
remove for a smoother soup); 4g
fresh dill; 1 clove garlic; juice and
zest of 1 medium lemon (zest is for
garnishing); salt and pepper to taste;
cherry tomatoes; red onions; olive
oil; homemade or store-bought
croutons (if you are making them
at home then you can cut up some
bread into little cubes, lightly drizzle
with olive oil or normal vegetable
oil and season with your preferred
seasoning and toast in the oven until
golden, before setting aside to cool.)
To make: To start, grab your avocados
and cut them in half, remove the pip
at the centre and then scoop out the
insides and add to a blender.
Cut up your cucumber into pieces
and add to the blender with half of
your veg stock and begin to blend.
Your soup will be slightly thick in
consistency which you can easily thin
out by adding more veg stock.
Add in 2g of dill, lemon juice and
garlic and season your soup as
required and blend further until a
smooth consistency is obtained.
Pop your soup into a bowl and into
the refrigerator whilst you prep your
garnishes to serve your soup.
The topping is a basic salsa of
Cherry tomatoes, red onions and
dill seasoned with salt, pepper and

Creamy delights
From party starter food to the perfect braai side to a delish healthy yoghurt treat,
Rediscover Dairy shares Summer-friendly recipes that lets dairy shine
Prawn, Avo, and Halloumi Ritz
An elegant, dairy-rich twist on a retro classic for Summer
entertaining. It’s a perfect starter for a sit-down dinner or
lunch occasion, but also makes for great party food too.
You’ll need: 300g peeled and pre-cooked prawns; 300g
halloumi more or less an average-sized block; 4 limes; 3 ripe
avos; micro herbs; paprika
Ingredients for the sauce: 2 Tbsp tomato sauce; 2 Tbsp sour
cream; 2 Tbsp mayonnaise; 1 Tbsp chives, finely chopped;
squeeze of lime
To make: Heat some butter in a pan, once hot, add your
seasoned prawns. Cook for a few minutes until browned.
Squeeze the juice of a lime onto the prawns and remove
from the heat. Set aside to cool.
Thinly slice up your halloumi. In a clean pan add some butter,
once hot pop it in and fry it on both sides until nice and
golden. Set aside.
In a bowl, combine the tomato sauce, sour cream,
mayonnaise, chives, and a small squeeze of lime. Give it a
good mix and set aside until ready to use
Halve the avos, take the stone out then remove the skin.
Thinly and carefully slice them so that they form pretty fans.
On a wooden or marble board fan out your avos to create a
nice pattern, then start arranging your prawns and halloumi
slices all around - you can have some fun with these elements
here, there is no set rule as to how they need to look.
Once you've added all your elements. Start dolloping on
some of your avo ritz mayo. Again, no rules here, just add
it between the prawns and a little on some of them etc.
Garnish with some micro herbs and a sprinkling of paprika.
You can also add some lime wedges to the mix
The idea is to take a slice of halloumi, add some avo and
prawn to it, then pop that all into your mouth.
Tip: Try this recipe with Emmentaler cheese, or something very
South African such as Boeren cheese.

cheese mix.

Sprinkle with 1 tsp dried chilli flakes,
then 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
Finish off with chopped fresh
coriander and a squeeze of lime juice.

We’re planting… Celosia Sol for its foliage
that becomes a brilliant shade of burgundy
or mix of burgundy-green when planted in
full sun. Although this celosia does produce
pretty flowers at the end of summer, it
is primarily a foliage plant. It’s also a low
growing shrubby plant that is ideal for beds
and borders and in containers. The burgundy
Lizard Leaf and mixed colour Gekko Green
contrast well with sunny yellow marigolds,
zinnia, petunias and sun coleus. It needs at
least six hours of sun to bring out its colours
and soil that drains well. Water regularly
but allow the soil to slightly dry out before
watering again. Fertilise once a month.

Spend time in your garden awakening your senses
with the sweet scent of Gardenia and peppery taste of Summer Savory
Indoor plant of the month
Did you know that sweetly scented Gardenia can be grown
indoors as well as on the patio? All it needs is to be near a
window that receives bright, indirect sunlight. Keep the soil
moist but not soggy and feed once a month with a fertiliser
or liquid feed at half strength, for acid-loving plants. It doesn’t
mind being trimmed after flowering to keep it in shape.
Cut off dead flowers to encourage new ones. If you need to
repot, do it when the weather is cooling down and the plant
is semi-dormant. Details: lvgplant.co.za
Herb of the month
Summer Savory (Saturega
hortensis) is a hot, peppery herb,
with subtle notes of thyme, mint
and marjoram. It’s a robust herb
that stands up to long slow cooking
and adds flavour to red meat, game
and poultry dishes as well as to
vegetables. It can be mixed with other
herbs when marinating meat for the
braai. The very young leaves add zest
to salads.
This annual summer herb, which
has small, delicate light green leaves,
grows in full sun or semi shade. Sow
seed directly into the soil. It does best
in light, loamy soil that drains well and
has been enriched with compost. For
a bushy, multi-stemmed plant, pinch
off the growing tips when the plants
are about 15cm tall. Use the tips in
salad. Once established this is a heat
and drought tolerant plant.

If you’re ready to lace up your boots
and step into the world of hiking,
you’re in for an adventure that
combines the beauty of nature with
a great way to stay active. And it isn’t
reserved for seasoned pros ... it’s an
accessible activity that allows anyone
to enjoy the outdoors at their own
pace. Besides the benefits of physical
exercise, it’s believed that spending
just 20 minutes outdoors leads to a
reduction in cortisol, the hormone
related to stress. Whether you’re
looking to unwind and relax, get a bit
of exercise, or simply enjoy the sights,
the beginner tips below will help you
feel prepared, confident, and excited
to hit the trails.
Start on shorter local trails
Before you have your sights set on
navigating multi-day expeditions
or conquering brag-worthy routes,
starting out with local hiking routes is
ideal for novices of all ages and fitness
levels. Most places have multiple
trails that are not too technically
challenging and complex to navigate.
Exploring local trails makes hiking
more accessible, saving you both time
and money by cutting out long trips.
Gear up with the essentials
Equipping yourself and your group
with the right gear ensures that you’ll
be well prepared for various scenarios
that can happen on a hike - from
weather changes to getting lost and
anything in-between.
Take a hike!
Love the outdoors. A beginner’s guide to hiking
Water ... This hiking essential doesn’t
need much of an introduction, but
it wouldn’t be an essentials packing
list if water wasn’t on it. According
to medical experts, water is more
vital on a hike than many realise, as
it’s easy to lose more fluid through
sweat than expected. Without
regular hydration, even a
short trek can lead
to dehydration,
causing fatigue,
headaches, and
sluggishness. In more severe
cases, dehydration can lead to heat
exhaustion or even heatstroke, both
of which pose serious health risks.
Regular sips along the trail help keep
your energy steady, your focus clear,
and your body protected, allowing you
to enjoy the outdoors safely and fully.
Basic first aid kit ... A basic first
aid kit might not be the first thing
that comes to mind for a hike, but
it’s invaluable when you’re out on
the trail. Small injuries—like cuts,
scrapes, or blisters—can quickly
turn uncomfortable. Having a
well-prepared kit means you’re
equipped to handle minor mishaps
or ease discomfort. Essentials
include a roll of adhesive bandage,
plasters, antibacterial ointment, an
antihistamine, gauze pads, pain relief
medication, safety pins, tweezers, oral
rehydration salts, and an EpiPen if
anyone has serious allergies.
Sun protection ... It goes
without saying that protecting
your skin from the sun is incredibly
important. So apply a good sunscreen
with SPF50+ before you go, and
reapply regularly throughout the day.
You should also wear a hat or cap -
like this Hi-Tech unisex cap.
Safety first With any active activity
safety is of the utmost importance,
and hikers need to take safety
precautions seriously. Hiking in
numbers is one of the best ways to
ensure safety on the trails. Not only
can a group help navigate tricky
terrain, but they can also assist in the
event of an unexpected injury or
emergency. Before setting off, it’s wise
to inform someone you trust about
your planned route and estimated
return time. This way, if you run
into any issues and can’t reach out,
someone will know where to look for
you and your group.
Hiking appropriate footwear ... Trust us. A sturdy pair of hiking shoes is one of the
few true essentials for any hike. Whether you’re venturing onto your designated
trail for a quick walk or heading out for a full-day trek, quality walking boots or trail
shoes are key to staying comfortable and safe. A pair of shoes that ensures longlasting
cushioning and an unfailing comfortable fit is ideal For women,
Hi-Tec’s
Glacier Mid women’s shoe features soft mesh for breathability, a padded
collar and tongue to support your ankles and its mid-cut style to keep you
safeguarded on rugged terrains. Hi-Tec’s men’s hiking footwear range
features the Ravus Vent Lite Low, designed for versatility across
varied terrains. This hiking shoe features a rugged outsole that
grips with unrivalled ease. The breathable membrane keeps
your feet comfortably dry, while the ghillie lacing system and
rustproof hardware secures a lasting fit. Visit hi-tec.co.za

Roof tops road tripping
From bikes to boards .. the road trip essentials guide to roof racks
There’s nothing that we South Africans
love more than a road trip. And this
year, we plan on getting out there ...
we’re gearing up for scenic coastal
drives, rugged camping adventures,
cross-country journeys. Having the
right gear can make all the difference
when it comes to comfort and
convenience on the road.
“Whether you’re transporting bikes,
kayaks, SUPs, a rooftop tent, or a roof
box, it all starts with a roof rack,” says
Jamie Owen, marketing manager
for Thule SA. Roof racks serve as the
foundation, enabling you to bring
all your essential gear along so you
can focus on creating unforgettable
memories.
Versatility and extra space Roof racks
are invaluable when you need extra
space or want to travel comfortably
without cramming items into the
trunk. A well-installed roof rack and
the right setup allow you to pack
beyond your vehicle’s interior capacity,
giving passengers more legroom and
creating a safer, more enjoyable ride.
It helps that roof racks can be tailored
to your specific vehicle. Choosing the
right system, often consisting of load
bars, feet, and a custom-fit kit, ensures
secure mounting.
Choosing a compatible roof rack
system One of the most crucial factors
is ensuring your roof rack system
is compatible with your vehicle’s
make and model. Online tools from
reputable suppliers can simplify this
process by allowing you to input your
car’s details and find the best fit. Once
you have the right system, installation
is usually straightforward, letting you
get road-ready in minutes.
Optimising your space ... roof boxes
and carrier baskets Adding roof boxes
or carrier baskets provides extra room
for bulky items, freeing up space inside
the vehicle. For those going on family
trips, low-profile, aerodynamic options
help minimise noise and improve
fuel efficiency, while roof platforms
are ideal for securing tents, coolers, or
other larger equipment for off-road or
camping excursions.
What about bike and water sports
gear? Exploring on two wheels or
taking advantage of South Africa’s
natural landscapes for kayaking,
paddleboarding, or surfing is more
accessible with the right roof rack. A
secure system simplifies transporting
bikes and water sports equipment,
ensuring your gear arrives safely and
is ready to go when you reach your
destination.
Safety tips for roof rack use Always
check your vehicle’s weight limits
for roof-mounted gear and avoid
exceeding the 75kg limit unless
specified by the vehicle’s manufacturer.
Before setting off, double-check that
everything is securely mounted,
balanced, and properly locked.
Periodically inspecting your roof rack
during stops is also a good habit,
especially when travelling on rougher
terrain.
Make this the year of adventure. Have
fun! For more info on selecting a
roof rack or accessories for your next
journey, visit thulestore.co.za

ARE YOUR EYES
WIDE OPEN?
Imagine going on a
once-in-a-lifetime trip
through Africa that forever
changes how you see
yourself and the world
around you. Joining one
of Carla Geyser’s Journeys
with Purpose allows you
to fill your soul, exploring
Africa’s rugged beauty,
while simultaneously
helping critical
conservation projects and
truly making a difference.
“Wake up, wake up. Open your eyes
wide. Are you awake? Have you woken
up well? Are your eyes wide open?”
These words, used by the Nharo
Bushmen, were spoken to Carla and
her fellow travellers recently, as they
sat on a rock, watching the sun rise
in Botswana. Hearing these words
spoken was a gentle reaffirmation
of her true purpose for former Ballito
resident Carla. “Those words have
woven themselves into the fabric of
my thoughts. They remind us to quiet
the noise, become attuned to the
world, look up and see.”
Carla started her non-profit, Blue Sky
Society Trust (BSST), more than a
decade ago with a dream of opening
up the beauty of Africa, through her
Journeys with Purpose, to those who
might otherwise never have the
chance to explore it. At the same time,
her expeditions have allowed her to
answer her innate desire to make a
difference and bring about positive
change in the world. What Carla didn’t
know when she started, was that
the changes she would bring about
through fundraising for conservation
would be just the beginning – and
that change would also happen inside
every individual who embarked on
one of these journeys.
Carla’s first trip, the Elephant Ignite
Expedition, was in 2016. She describes
it as an ‘audacious trek’ that spanned
over 16 000km across 10 different
African countries over three months.
Together with 12 other courageous
women, Carla raised funds and
awareness for elephant conservation,
while navigating Africa’s varied, rugged
landscapes. “The expedition was more
than a physical journey – it was a
testament to the power of combining
travel with purpose.”
Since then, Carla has led numerous
Journeys with Purpose, each one
32 Get It Magazine February 2025
connecting like-minded people from
around the world with the shared
goal of supporting wildlife and
conservation efforts in Africa.
Her most recent expedition, earlier
this year, raised more than R250 000
for wildlife and humanitarian projects.
The 6000km trip was divided into three
separate legs, each with a unique crew
focussing on different projects. She
titled the journeys Earth, Wind, and
Fire. “These journeys weren’t about
traversing great distances; they were
a reminder of our interconnectedness
with nature and the urgent need
to protect it. Each crew comprised
of people from around the globe,
with varying ages, cultures, and
backgrounds, all connected through
a shared passion for conservation and
desire to make a difference.”
Over the years, Carla has led groups
made up of individuals from all
over the world, including SA, the
Netherlands, Canada, Malaysia,
Germany, the USA, and the UK. One of
her guests on the Earth leg of the most
recent trip was Ilse van der Velden
from the Netherlands. Ilse, together
with a group of fellow travellers from
the Netherlands, joined Carla on a
13-night expedition that started in the
Kruger National Park. She fell in love
with Africa instantly.
“It is a surreal and magical
experience to be woken up
in the wee hours by roaring
lions and the whooping of
hyenas. In this wilderness,
the hustle and stress of
everyday life falls away”
But these journeys are about
much more than exploring Africa’s
magnificent landscapes. They are
about creating awareness and
invoking an understanding of the
role humans play in preserving her
delicate ecological balance. “I have
seen the suffering with my own eyes
and heard the terrible stories from
members of the various organisations.
Elephants and rhinos are killed for
their ivory, causing young calves to die
of starvation if they are not found in
time. Vultures are poisoned through
abandoned carcasses so that they can
no longer betray poaching activities.
These stories break your heart,” Ilse says.
It is this awareness and awakening
that drives Carla to do the work she
does. “I can’t explain how special
these trips are and how incredible it
is seeing individuals grow and then
watching them head back over the
oceans different people.” Apart from the
profoundly deep friendships forged by
the coming together of these diverse
travellers, the first-hand experiences
they engage in while working with the
conservation teams on the ground are
where the truly lasting magic happens.
The Earth, Wind and Fire Journeys
with Purpose saw Carla and her crews
collaborating with local conservationists
to: Collar elephants for research; work
with the Endangered Wildlife Trust for
vulture conservation; contribute to
the building of a wildlife education
facility; participate in pangolin and grass
biomass studies and programmes. They
also visited a UNESCO World Heritage
site, tracked wildlife on foot, and spent
nights under the stars sharing stories
and forging lifelong bonds.
“This work gives me purpose and fills
my cup. Throughout every journey
though, one question echoes in our
minds – are your eyes wide open? It's
a question that goes beyond mere
observation – it's a call to action.”
