Boyfriends. Dating advice. And a killing couple. Fab Feb finds.

Hazel and Fox are an ordinary married

For the curious ... mezcal - the more

interesting cousin to tequila. The Lost

Explorer Mezcal Espadín 8 is sweet and

herbaceous, with hints of red apple, ripe

fruits and a mild smoky finish. It’s best

served neat and room temperature in a

traditional veladora - which opens slightly

at the top ... this wide mouth allows the

aromas to be enjoyed more evenly. For

the truly curious, it’s suggested you dot a

small amount of the mezcal onto the inside

of your wrist and rub in ... as the alcohol

evaporates it leaves you with the beautiful

aroma of the mezcal to appreciate. It’s also

perfect for cocktails ... try The Earthy Paloma.

Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a

highball glass, and dip into a mixture of salt

and, if you have, Tajin chilli pepper spice.

Pour 45ml mezcal and 10ml lime juice into

the glass, then fill with ice. Top with 60ml

grapefruit juice, stir gently to combine,

and garnish with a grapefruit wedge. Sit in

the sunshine and enjoy. The Lost Explorer

A

creative

spirit

Dancer, choreographer and

founder of Unity Performing Arts

in Umhlanga, Jemma van Breda is

buzzing with creativity.

Text: Jennifer Campbell Photograph: shren media Makeup: aldytha da silva

Jemma van Breda’s passion

for the arts has been her

guiding light from a young

age. After discovering her

love for dance in school,

she never looked back. She

went on to represent South

Africa in Los Angeles at the World

Dance Championships, where her

talents earned her a scholarship at

the prestigious Millennium Dance

Complex. Immersed in LA’s bustling

arts scene, Jemma loved the energy

but felt something was missing.

“There’s so much talent in South

Africa,” she says, “I just thought, why

can’t this be available back home?”

THE VISION

After returning home,

Jemma founded

Unity Performing Arts

in Durban. Unity, as its

name suggests, was created

to bring together creatives from

all walks of life – freelancers, dancers,

musicians and visual artists. Her goal

was simple but powerful: to provide a

supportive space where artists could

come together, collaborate and thrive

without having to journey overseas.

She also built a media division within

Unity that focuses on employing

and showcasing local talent through

digital media and video projects.

16 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga February 2025

“It’s about collaboration over

competition,” she explains.

Unity primarily serves young adults

between 18 and 35, bridging the

gap between childhood studios and

professional life. Jemma explains that

this age group often struggles to

find artistic spaces that focus on their

unique needs and aspirations. From

hip-hop battles and art classes to

videography and live performances,

Unity is alive with projects that

showcase South African talent and

offer sustainable employment to

young people.

A STUDIO WITH HEART

Unity is essentially a large, multi-use

space that boasts a recording studio,

media equipment, rehearsal space

and the flexibility to cater to any and

all art forms. More than just a studio,

Unity is a home for expression and

exploration. “We want to establish

Durban as a true arts hub,” Jemma

says, “a place where creatives can

not only dream but also create

meaningful work that resonates.”

This drive to empower local

talent comes from Jemma’s own

experiences abroad, where she saw

first-hand the value of a strong arts

community. By creating this platform,

she’s helping Durban’s talent shine –

no plane ticket required!

LIVING FOR ADVENTURE

When she’s not working, Jemma

lives life to the fullest. Now based in

Umdloti, she starts each morning

with a swim in the ocean, catching

the sunrise and soaking up the salt air.

“The ocean and the sun do something

to my DNA,” she laughs. Whether it’s

surfing, skating or cliff diving, Jemma

loves adrenaline-filled activities and

exploring the North Coast’s natural

beauty. On a whim, she’ll gather

friends for spontaneous trips, diving

into hidden waterfalls, finding

secluded beaches and capturing

these moments on camera for some

spectacular content. These adventures

fuel her creative spirit. “I need that

inspiration,” she says, “whether

it’s nature, travel or just being

around amazing people.”

The transformative

power of

YES

Tes Jahnig, a spiritual leader at

Linc Church in Salt Rock,

recently published her debut

book The YES Life.

The YES Life follows Tes’s personal

journey into the power of saying

‘yes’ to God, purpose and a future

filled with possibility. We chatted

to her about the inspiration

behind her words, as well as

the process of writing this

practical guide for anyone

trying to navigate the

complexities of life.

Text: Jennifer Campbell Photograph: derryn Schmidt

What inspired you to

write The YES Life?

I have always wanted to

be a writer and writing a

book is a dream I’ve lived

with since I was in high

school when a teacher

planted the seed in my

heart. In 2021, my husband

encouraged me to pursue

a passion, offering to support

any one thing I wanted to do. I

chose a book-writing course, and I

guess, the rest is history. The course

helped unearth the message inside

me that I wanted to share with the world.

Books endure,

and I'm so grateful to have created something

that, one day, my grandchildren and even my

great-grandchildren might read and be shaped by.

18 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga February 2025

How has your personal journey of saying ‘yes’

shaped who you are today, both as an author and

a spiritual leader?

Honestly, my lean towards saying ‘yes’ has motivated

and pulled me towards the person I am today.

I have grown and overcome my fear of failure,

and my YES to a big and bold, God-breathed life

continuously calls me past my fear of peoplepleasing

and propels me to go after the things that

beat in my heart, even when I don’t have the full

plan or know what the outcome will be. Choosing

YES helped me become an author and release this

book, and I’m forever grateful to be where I am at

this moment.

What are some common fears or misconceptions

people have about saying ‘yes’ to their purpose,

and how can they overcome them?

I think many of us are afraid of saying YES because we

don’t want to be overcommitted, or perhaps we can’t

say YES because we’re indecisive or unsure of what we

actually want in life. But saying YES is expansive, not

confining. It opens us up to more. It wills us towards

giving life a go. It moves us past our fear of failing and

perfectionism. I think the only way we can overcome

our fear is to say YES in spite of it. To do things afraid.

To show up and say YES, whatever the cost.

How has writing the book transformed your

perspective and daily life?

I have a newfound respect for any kind of academic

or creative work. I spent many nights, after hours,

when my family were sleeping, working on this

book. I poured my honesty and vulnerability into it,

and it was unravelling and exhausting at times. But

I’ve learnt that we can do really hard things when

we choose to put our heads and our hearts into the

moment. I’ve learnt that anything is possible when

we have beautiful people who believe in us and urge

us on. There were many days I wanted to pack it in,

but it was in those moments my people showed up,

gave me courage and filled in the gaps. Writing also

became a source of healing. Much of The YES Life

was written after I lost my dad, and I will always be

thankful for how the process helped me grieve and

rebuild my life after such a profound loss.

What’s next for you after The YES Life? Any new

projects or focuses you’re excited to share?

I think my husband may not be ready for this one,

but I have a new book blooming within me, and

I’m looking forward to writing it this year if all goes

according to plan. In the meantime, my deepest

desire is that this message of The YES Life will reach

everyone who needs to hear it. It’s a message for

the everyday, ordinary human who is crazy enough

to believe that maybe their creativity, work and

presence can change the world.

Text: Nicole Sherwin, founder Eco Diva Natural Superfood Skincare www.ecodiva.co.za

The beauty industry is constantly

evolving, with trends that push the

boundaries of skincare and makeup

innovation. One of the latest and

most exciting movements is the rise

of superfood makeup—a perfect

fusion of natural skincare and

cosmetics designed to nourish the

skin while enhancing beauty. But

what exactly is superfood makeup,

and why is it poised to be the next

big trend in beauty?

What is superfood makeup?

Superfood makeup is a category of

cosmetics formulated with nutrientrich

ingredients traditionally found

in the wellness world. Think of the

same superfoods you add to your

smoothies—like chia seeds, baobab,

matcha, and cacao—but now they’re

in your foundation, lip balm, and even

your mascara. These supercharged

ingredients are rich in vitamins,

minerals, antioxidants, and essential

fatty acids, offering benefits beyond

just surface-level beautification.

Superfood makeup goes beyond

typical beauty products, delivering

skincare benefits while you wear it.

Imagine makeup that not only covers

imperfections but also hydrates,

protects, and even heals the skin.

That’s the magic of this trend—beauty

and health working together for

optimal results.

The future of superfood makeup

As more consumers lean towards

clean, ethical beauty products that

offer skincare benefits, superfood

makeup is set to revolutionise the

beauty industry. The future will see

an expansion in the variety and

complexity of these formulations, with

more focus on personalised beauty

solutions, and an emphasis on allnatural,

nourishing ingredients.

BEAUTY

Superfood makeup ... the next big trend

Key Ingredients in Superfood Makeup

Many brands are now championing superfood-rich formulas, integrating

these powerful ingredients into their products. Some key superfoods you’ll

find include:

Baobab: Packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, baobab helps boost collagen

production, promoting firmness and elasticity.

Chia: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds provide deep hydration and help

balance the skin’s natural oil production.

Cacao: Known for its high antioxidant content, cacao fights free radicals and

keeps the skin youthful and radiant.

Moringa: This nutrient powerhouse contains vitamins A, C, and E, offering

protection from environmental stressors while nourishing the skin.

Spirulina: With its potent anti-inflammatory properties, spirulina helps calm

irritated skin and reduce redness.

The benefits of superfood makeup

The primary advantage of superfood makeup is its ability

to double as skincare. Unlike conventional makeup,

which can sometimes clog pores or irritate the skin,

superfood-infused products provide a holistic approach

to beauty. Here are a few reasons why this trend is

gaining momentum:

Nourishes the skin: Superfood makeup is rich in vitamins,

minerals, and antioxidants, which work to nourish the

skin from the outside in. With consistent use, skin appears

healthier, more hydrated, and glowing.

Protects against environmental damage: Ingredients

like spirulina and moringa create a protective barrier that

shields the skin from pollutants and UV damage, keeping

skin resilient and youthful.

Hydrates and balances: Superfood ingredients such

as chia seeds and baobab have incredible moisturizing

properties, ensuring the skin stays hydrated throughout

the day. They also balance oil production, making

superfood makeup suitable for all skin types, including oily

and acne-prone skin.

Supports skin healing: Rich in anti-inflammatory and

antioxidant properties, superfood ingredients like cacao

and spirulina can speed up the skin’s healing process,

reducing redness, irritation, and inflammation.

Eco-friendly and clean: Many superfood makeup brands

emphasize sustainability and ethical sourcing, ensuring

that their products are not only good for your skin but also

for the planet. Most of these products are free from harmful

chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and toxins, aligning with

the growing demand for clean beauty.

Finding the correct sun cream

Sun protection is a crucial element of healthy skin, but finding the

right sun cream can be a challenge. Let’s face it ... some of us have

sensitive skin, others oily, we want safe options for our children

and are worried about hyperpigmentation. Hello Bioderma’s

Photoderm range ... who boast they have a product for each skin

type and each skin condition under the sun! There are options

for sensitive skin (gentle, high-protection formulas minimise

irritation and allergies), for oily a acne-prone skin (lightweight, noncomedogenic

options prevent breakouts), for dry skin (hydrating

sun cream that provides essential moisture alongside protection),

for those with hyperpigmentation concerns (formulas with specific

ingredients help prevent and minimise dark spots) and for children

and babies. With most having an SPF50+, there’s a cream for blue

light protection, and those with natural, light and golden tints.

What we love ... the creams are non-sticky, water resistant, fast

absorbing and invisible. You’ll find the range, from around R245, at

DisChem and Clicks.

Where

fitness

meets friendship

What do you get when you combine

a love of fitness, a passion for

community and boundless energy?

Meet Tatton Bouras, co-founder of the

Ballito Social Run Club, underwater

hockey player for South Africa, lawyer,

and all-around inspiration.

Text: Jennifer Campbell Photograph: PAGIEL CHETTY

unning has always been a part of Tatton’s

life, and she’s inspired by her mom, who has

run the Comrades Marathon. But starting a

running club wasn’t just about staying fit;

it was about building connections in her

relatively new home, Ballito. “When I moved

here three years ago, I didn’t know anyone,” she says.

“Making friends as an adult can be hard, especially for

women. I wanted to create a space where

anyone could come and feel welcomed,

no matter their fitness level.”

The Ballito Social Run Club,

established in September

last year, quickly became

that safe space. Every

Thursday, a group of

about 20 women

gathers to run, walk,

shuffle or stroll. “There’s

no pressure. If you

want to push a stroller,

bring your dog, or just

walk, that’s perfectly

okay,” Tatton says. “It’s

about moving your body,

boosting your mental health,

and finding community.”

Want to

Social Run Club? There’s

no membership fee – just

come as you are. The group

meets at Seattle Coffee at

Thursday morning. Keep an

page for updates.

But Tatton’s vision for the club extends beyond

running. After each session, local women-owned

businesses or service providers present their offerings,

creating a supportive network. “It’s been incredible

to see women not only connect socially but also

professionally,” she says.

When Tatton isn’t leading the charge on Thursday

mornings, she’s in the water, representing South Africa

in the niche sport of underwater hockey. “It’s such

an odd sport,” she laughs. “But it’s played all over the

world, and I’ve been lucky to travel for tournaments

and play with some amazing teams.”

Tatton also balances her passions with a demanding

career as a lawyer and a side hustle as a fitness

instructor at Kico Life in Ballito. The rewards of her

many roles lie in the connections she fosters. “Seeing

someone come out of their shell, make friends, or find

confidence through the club is amazing. It’s not about

me; it’s about creating a safe space where women (or

anyone who identifies as female) feel like they belong.”

Whether it’s out on the promenade, in the water, or in

her legal career, Tatton embodies a mantra she shares

with her runners: “You are more than enough, just as

you are.”

Ready to

roll

We recently rolled into BODYROLL Ballito for a session of self-care and

wellness – and what an experience it was! Located in Ballito, this innovative

studio is introducing the North Coast to a health concept that has already

made waves in the Cape.

26 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga February 2025

wner Claudia Bruyns,

inspired by family

and friends who

experienced the

BODYROLL magic in

Cape Town, felt the

North Coast was missing

a studio of its own. “People here are so

health-conscious, and BODYROLL fits

perfectly into a weekly wellness regime,”

she says.

What Is BODYROLL?

BODYROLL isn’t just a trendy name

– it’s an effective approach to lymph

drainage, cellulite reduction and

muscle recovery. At the heart of the

method is a machine equipped with

rotating wooden rollers that work

to stimulate circulation, break down

toxins and improve overall wellbeing.

Each session comprises 45 minutes.

With Claudia’s guidance, we worked

through each position, working on our

feet, legs, tummies, backs and arms.

The benefits

Claudia emphasises the

transformative impact it’s had on

clients in just two months. “We already

have people who can’t go a week

without a session. One of our clients

shared how she’s struggled with

poor lymph and blood circulation for

years, experiencing pins and needles

and numbness. After incorporating

BODYROLL into her routine, her water

retention and inflammation have

reduced significantly, and she hasn’t

experienced pins and needles since.”

Our experience

For us, the session was not only a

great way to unwind but also an

eye-opener into the health benefits of

this holistic practice. The rollers target

various areas of the body, offering

a deep massage that left us feeling

relaxed yet revitalized. Whether

you’re looking to detox, tone up, or

recover after a workout, BODYROLL is

the perfect addition to any self-care

routine.

A space for health

The studio’s chic, welcoming

atmosphere is another plus. It’s clear

that Claudia’s passion extends beyond

offering a service—she’s creating a

space where clients can truly prioritise

their health and wellbeing.

As we stepped out of BODYROLL

Ballito feeling lighter, relaxed and

rejuvenated, one thing was certain: this

unique wellness experience is a gamechanger

for the North Coast. Just be

the next day, but trust us, it’s worth it!

Strong bones, stronger lives:

Understanding and

preventing osteoporosis

Dr Tanya van der Made, a

specialist endocrinologist

based in Ballito, explains the

importance of bone health

and its connection to the

endocrine system.

n endocrinologist’s training allows us to “connect

the dots” of numerous investigations to arrive

at a diagnosis. It’s a time-intensive process but

rewarding, as it allows us to track changes over

time and intervene, when necessary, while

preserving the body’s natural, healthy endocrine system.

Bone health is a prime example of this intricate balance.

Bone is a dynamic organ, continuously breaking down and

rebuilding itself at a microscopic level. It’s not static, and

it needs to be respected. Neglecting this can lead to dire

consequences, such as atypical fractures that occur when

bone density improves without corresponding strength.

This often happens when patients on oral bisphosphonate

medications are not adequately monitored.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis, a silent yet debilitating condition, affects

millions worldwide, compromising bone strength and

significantly increasing the risk of fractures. When the

balance of bone formation is disrupted, bones lose their

density and strength, becoming susceptible to fractures.

28 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga February 2025

Osteoporosis is not restricted to older women, as is often

assumed. Men and younger individuals are also at risk,

particularly those with underlying chronic conditions,

hormonal imbalances, or specific lifestyle factors.

The primary causes of osteoporosis are multifaceted.

Aging and hormonal changes, especially reduced

oestrogen levels after menopause, are well-recognised

contributors. However, other conditions, including

diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and long-term corticosteroid

use for conditions like asthma or rheumatoid arthritis,

can also accelerate bone loss. A condition called

hyperparathyroidism is often missed and it is caused by

overactivity of the parathyroid gland causing calcium to

leach out of your bones and increased calcium levels in the

blood. This is an important secondary cause to exclude as

a cause of osteoporosis. Family history, smoking, excessive

alcohol consumption, and insufficient physical activity

further exacerbate the risk and ongoing deterioration

of bone.

Identifying risk factors early and conducting regular

screenings can help prevent fractures and even

save lives.

Preventing and treating osteoporosis

Prevention starts with a healthy lifestyle. Adequate calcium

and vitamin D intake, regular weight-bearing exercise, and

avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption

are key. For those already diagnosed, there are numerous

treatments available. These range from medications that

slow bone loss, to those that actively rebuild bone. It’s a

misconception that osteoporosis cannot be treated – there

are many effective options to discuss with your doctor.

I advocate for proactive community care and early

diagnosis. Anyone over the age of 50 should consider a

bone density scan and, if at risk, follow up every 18–24

months. Persistent back or hip pain should also be a

red flag for potential bone health issues and warrants

investigation.

Treatment options for osteoporosis have advanced

significantly in recent years. Medications such as

bisphosphonates and denosumab work to slow bone

loss, while anabolic agents like teriparatide stimulate bone

formation. Hormonal therapies may also be appropriate in

select cases. However, these treatments must be tailored to

the individual, taking into account their medical history, risk

factors, and overall health.

As an endocrinologist, my role in managing osteoporosis

extends beyond prescribing medications.

Community engagement and success stories

My favourite success story recently has been organising the

“Wiggle Your Bones” run, which had over 66 participants,

including some four-legged furry friends. The event aimed

to raise awareness about bone health while encouraging

physical activity – a key component of osteoporosis

prevention.

Community engagement is crucial because too often,

people suffer in silence. By sharing knowledge and

fostering open conversations, we can empower individuals

to take charge of their health and ensure that osteoporosis

is detected and managed effectively.

My aim was simply to get people to talk about osteoporosis

and raise awareness. This was done with support from

NOFSA (National Osteoporosis Foundation of South Africa)

who have their main event in Cape Town.

Let’s challenge the misconceptions and work together to

prevent fractures and improve bone health across all ages.

Remember, it’s never too early – or too late – to take care of

your bones.

Young chefs

eat healthy

Teaching kids about nutrition through hands-on

cooking activities not only helps combat childhood

obesity but also sets the foundation for lifelong

healthy eating habits.

While kids need to know that every

food they put into their bodies affects

them, you don’t want to give them

more facts than they can grasp or

turn every meal into a lecture. But

wait too long and they could pick up

unhealthy habits in the meantime.

Registered dietitian Dr Monique Piderit

emphasises the value of hands-on

cooking activities in teaching kids

about nutrition.

“Involving children in meal preparation

can significantly benefit their health.

Research shows that children who

cook are more likely to make healthier

food choices.”

Dr Piderit shares some tips for ensuring

children have nutritious school

lunches, snacks, and dinners:

Balanced school lunches Include

a mix of lean proteins (like chicken,

beans, eggs, yoghurt, milk, maas),

whole grains (such as wholewheat

bread, crackers, high-fibre pasta),

and a variety of colourful vegetables

and fruits. This combination ensures

children get essential nutrients to keep

them energised throughout the day.

Healthy snacks Opt for snacks that are

high in fibre and low in added sugars.

Examples include apple slices with

nut butter, carrot sticks with hummus,

yoghurt with fruit or a handful of

unsalted nuts.

Nutritious dinners Focus on balanced

meals that include a lean protein, a

variety of vegetables, and whole grains.

Incorporate healthy fats, like nuts,

peanut butter, and those found in

canola oil and mayonnaise, to support

overall health.

Fun and nutritious cooking activities

B-well has launched their Taste

Explorers Cookbook in collaboration

with Dr Piderit. Packed with more than

25 nutritious recipes, it helps parents

create healthy and delicious school

lunches and dinners for their kids. You

can download your own copy of the

Taste Explorers Cookbook through

their website bwellfoods.co.za and

with your children today.

We think these three kid-friendly recipes from the Taste Explorers

Cookbook will get kids excited about nutrition.

HOMEWORK TIPS

FOR PARENTS

As the new school year begins, the team at Crawford International North Coast shares

some valuable homework tips for parents.

Remember that homework is designed to reinforce the

learning that takes place in the classroom, helping students

develop a deeper understanding of the material.

1. CREATE A DEDICATED HOMEWORK SPACE

Set up a quiet, well-lit area where your child can focus on

their work. A consistent space helps them mentally prepare.

2. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE

Consistency is key. Designate a specific time each day for

homework to create a routine that your child can follow.

3. BREAK DOWN BIG ASSIGNMENTS

Large projects can be overwhelming. Help your child break

down tasks into smaller, more manageable parts, and set

mini deadlines to keep them on track.

4. STAY POSITIVE AND ENCOURAGING

Homework can sometimes be frustrating. Offer words of

encouragement to help your child stay motivated.

5. LIMIT DISTRACTIONS

Turn off the TV, put away devices, and create a distractionfree

environment. This helps your child stay focused.

6. BE INVOLVED, BUT DON’T TAKE OVER

It’s important to offer support but remember that

homework is your child’s responsibility. Encourage them to

work independently be be available for help if needed.

7. ENCOURAGE BREAKS

If your child has a lot of homework, encourage them to

take short breaks to rest and recharge. This can improve

focus and productivity.

8. USE RESOURCES WISELY

If your child is struggling with a particular subject, don’t

hesitate to use additional resources like educational

websites, apps, or tutoring.

9. COMMUNICATE WITH TEACHERS

If homework becomes overwhelming, reach out to

your child’s teacher. They can offer insights and suggest

strategies to help your child manage their workload.

10. CELEBRATE EFFORT, NOT JUST RESULTS

Praise your child for their effort and hard work, regardless of the

outcome. This helps build confidence and a growth mindset.

As we all gear up for the term ahead, these tips can

help make the school year a little smoother. Remember,

homework is just one part of your child’s educational

journey. By supporting them with these strategies, you are

helping to create a love of learning that will last a lifetime.

A heart for

special needs

Founder of Hands and Hearts Autism Interventions, Leigh De Bruyn, has recently taken

over The Autism Project in Salt Rock, and is excited to be doing more of what she loves.

Text: Jennifer Campbell

Leigh never planned to work with

children. She initially thought her

psychology degree would lead her

to work with adults. But life had other

plans.

“I was about to start my honours

when my mom passed away

suddenly,” she says. “It was a tough

time, and I took a year off to process

everything. When I returned to

my studies, I did an internship at a

children’s home, which was incredibly

challenging but also a turning point

for me.”

Her path eventually led her to the

world of autism. Working at a Durbanbased

centre specialising in strict

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

methods, Leigh fell in love with the

field. “I thought, ‘This is amazing!’

It opened my eyes to how much

potential these kids have.”

36 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga February 2025

Leigh later joined Tam Bennett, the

owner of The Autism Project, a centre

with a more holistic approach, which

she describes as transformative. “Tam

was my mentor and helped me find

my place in this field. It wasn’t just

about therapy; it was about building

a community and values.”

Recently, Leigh took over from

Tam at The Autism Project in Salt

Rock, marking another milestone

in her journey. “It just feels like the

right time and place,” she says. “The

community here has been incredibly

welcoming and collaborative, which

makes such a difference.”

Her own venture, Hands and Hearts,

started small. “I began with just one

family at a time,” Leigh explains. “It’s

grown so much since then, and I’ve

never looked back.” Now based in

a spacious house in Morningside,

complete with a playground and

therapy rooms, Hands and Hearts is

a thriving space where children with

autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can

grow, learn and thrive.

Leigh describes her work as

both challenging and rewarding.

“Every day is different. I love the

quirks of the kids – their passions,

their fixations. We build on those

strengths, whether it’s trains,

dinosaurs, or something completely

unexpected. It’s their superpower,

not a disability.”

Leigh’s work isn’t just about providing

therapy. It’s deeply personal. In

honour of her late mother, Anne, she

launched a non-profit organisation

called Anne’s Little Angels. “My mom

always emphasised giving back. With

Anne’s Little Angels, we aim to help

families who can’t afford therapy. It’s

about ensuring they have access to

early intervention, screenings and

resources,” she says.

The organisation also focuses

on educating teachers in underresourced

areas about recognising

the signs of autism. “Early

intervention is key. We want to go to

preschools and day cares and equip

teachers to spot the signs and guide

families to the help they need,” Leigh

explains.

LEIGH’S TIPS FOR PARENTS

OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

• Take it one step at a time

“Don’t panic. Accept it, process it,

and reach out for support. There’s a

community ready to help.”

• Focus on connection

“Not everything has to be about

engagement or stimulation.

Sometimes, just playing with your

child is enough.”

• Don’t overwhelm yourself

“Pick your battles. You don’t need to

work on everything at once. Focus

on one area and build from there.”

• Reclaim your role as a parent

“Many parents feel pressure to ‘do it

all.’ Remember to just be a mom or

dad. The bond you build with your

child is what truly matters.”

• Seek support

“Connect with others who have

been through this journey. Sharing

experiences and guidance can make

all the difference.”

Exercise

good for the body,

mind and soul

Most children spend at least six

hours a day at school, sitting

down and concentrating.

While this is good for their

education, their young bodies

should be physically active for at

least 60 minutes every day.

It doesn’t need to be a structured

sport, anything that gets them away

from screens and allows them to burn

off all that excess energy will help.

Plus, it can double as a fun family

activity to promote bonding.

Encouraging your child to be

physically active will help them

stay active and healthy through

adolescence and adulthood.

The

sweet

side

Tracey Richardson, the creative force behind Bites of Joy, is proof that sometimes

the best things in life come from the most unexpected beginnings.

“I was never into baking,” Tracey

admits with a laugh. “But I took a

beginner’s course just for fun, and I

was hooked.” From there, her love for

detailed decorating blossomed, and

she began sharing her creations with

family and friends. Before she knew

it, her biscuits became the highlight

of parties, baby showers and even

corporate events.

When Tracey relocated to Ballito from

Middleburg two years ago, she faced

the challenge of building a customer

base in a new town. “I was scared

because I didn’t know anyone,” she

admits. “But the community here has

been so supportive. It’s such a friendly

place.” In just two years, her reputation

for creating beautiful, personalised

biscuits has grown significantly.

Her biscuits aren’t just a treat – they’re

a piece of edible art. From unicorns

and cartoon characters for children’s

parties to branded biscuits for

corporate clients like Woolworths Café

and Estée Lauder, Tracey’s designs add

a memorable touch to any event.

While juggling late nights and hectic

schedules, Tracey’s favourite part

of her work is seeing the joy her

creations bring. “When customers

collect their orders and they’re thrilled,

it makes all the hard work worth it,”

she says.

Looking to the future, Tracey plans

to expand her business by hosting

beginner decorating classes, a

move she believes will bring people

together and inspire others to explore

their creative side. For now, she’s

savouring every moment of her sweet

success.

PARTY TRENDS: WHAT’S HOT

animated hues that pop on tables.

4. Eco-friendly decor: Reusable or

Greek flavours

and

wanderlust

Nic Papadopoulos and Janet Aldworth have collaborated in creating a bespoke food

tour through Greece. It’s the culmination of two lifetimes devoted to their passions –

food and travel.

Nic, the celebrated foodie and former

owner of Eat Greek, a family-run

restaurant known for its hospitality

and authentic Greek cuisine, has

always believed in the power of food

to bring people together. Janet, the

managing director of Sure Voyager

Travel, has spent over 50 years crafting

unforgettable travel experiences, with

a deep focus on culture and culinary

discovery. Together, they’ve created

a ten-day journey that combines

their shared love for Greece, its rich

traditions and the joy of connection.

“Greek food is about so much more

than moussaka and baklava,” Nic

explains with a smile. “It’s about

discovering those undiscovered

dishes – the ones passed down

through generations. Food connects

people.” Janet agrees, adding,

“This tour is about so much more

than visiting beautiful places – it’s

46 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga February 2025

about tasting, learning, and truly

experiencing the heart of Greek

culture.”

A TASTE OF AUTHENTICITY

The journey begins in Athens, where

travellers will walk through historic

markets, learn to make tzatziki, and

explore hidden artisan spots. Janet

meticulously scouted each stop on

the route herself, sampling everything

from traditional dishes to local wines.

“Athens has this vibrant food culture,”

Nic says. “You get to know the people

behind the food. They’ll hand you

a slice of feta or tell you the story of

their honey – it’s magic.”

From the hustle of Athens, the tour

shifts gears to the serene island of

Kefalonia, where Nic’s family roots

run deep. Think white sandy beaches,

crystal-clear turquoise waters, and

long, lazy lunches overlooking olive

groves. The group will indulge in local

wines, fresh seafood, and lesser-known

specialties like Kefalonian meat pie and

rooster slow-cooked in red wine. Janet

has discovered a number of gems that

you’d simply never stumble across as a

tourist, and is excited to share them.

A NEW ERA OF TRAVEL

Post-pandemic, the way people

travel has evolved. “There’s been a

shift,” explains Janet. “Travellers are

more focused now, seeking quality

experiences over quantity. They’re

after enrichment – be it through food,

culture or connections.”

This ethos is perfectly embodied in the

tour. It’s not about ticking destinations

off a list but immersing yourself in the

lifestyle. As Nic puts it, “Greek hospitality

isn’t a show; it’s a way of life. Meals

aren’t rushed. They’re a time to relax,

share stories and connect.”

You get to know the

people behind the

food. They’ll hand you

a slice of feta or tell

you the story of their

honey – it’s magic.

THE WOMAN BEHIND

THE VISION

The Greece food tour is not just a

collaboration but a testament to

Janet’s vision and passion. With

over 50 years in the travel industry,

Janet has devoted herself to crafting

authentic experiences. She personally

researched every destination,

sampling the restaurants, tasting the

food, and savouring the wines to

ensure an unforgettable journey. “I’ve

always believed that food is one of

the best ways to truly understand a

culture,” Janet says. Her enthusiasm

for sharing these discoveries is

the heartbeat of the tour. “This is

my dream come to life – a way to

connect people through the universal

language of food.”

SPECIAL MEMORIES

Nic’s deep ties to Kefalonia, along

with his years of culinary expertise,

brings authenticity to each bite and

every moment. “I’ve spent countless

holidays in Greece with my family,” he

says. “The best meals were always off

the beaten track – slow-cooked goat

shank, fresh bread and homemade

wine. That’s what we want to share.”

Ultimately, the tour is about creating

memories. Whether it’s learning to cook

under the Acropolis, savouring local

wines, or sharing laughter over a laden

Greek table, every moment is designed

to linger long after the trip ends.

“You know you’re in Greece the

moment you taste the tomatoes,” Nic

laughs. “They’re so sweet and juicy!”

Details: The Tour De Feast Greek Food

Tour will take place from 15-26 May

2025 and costs from R69,895 per

person sharing. Visit
