WELCOM E TO ISSUE # 27- Summer [ II of II]

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF | Publisher's M essage

As summer winds down and drizzly days arrive,

I am pleased to share Part II of our

Okanagan discovery journey that began in

Issue # 26 at Spirit Ridge Resort and

continues with the Watermark Beach Resort,

15 Park Bistro, and Levia Wellness Spa.

From there, I ventured to the District Wine

Village with most gracious and

accommodating Ryan Duffy (Director of Sales

& Marketing, Watermark) and enjoyed the

hospitality of many wineries, including the

charming Apricus Cellars. A short drive later, I

pulled up a chair at the picturesque Church &

State Winery.

The Rosew ood Hotel Georgia officially

relaunched with a new team member, a

gorgeous Fazioli in California Walnut burl, at

which we photographed the latest in the

Show case Pianos Presents series with pianist

Ariana Abedini.

When the Ron Thom-designed Anderson

Residence came on the market, we

connected with Corey Klassen of Articulated

Design Studio and got his take on what

makes this West Coast Modern home unique.

We share a journey on the Riverside Ravel

along the Rhône River with Riverside Luxury

Cruises for Travel this issue. This four-day

experience was the epitome of pampering,

with 24/ 7 w hite glove service as every dish

and desire was catered to.

An off-ship afternoon excursion to the Ayme

Truffe Farm for a little 'hunting' was the

gourmand experience of a lifetime!

In CELEBRATE, we share the wedding day of

Blair Zheng and Vincent Huang. Once again,

Paradise Events Inc. created magic at the

Fairmont Pacific Rim. The grand ballroom

was transformed into a fairytale setting, with

cascading floral arrangements, sparkling

chandeliers, and a gourmet feast.

On the 11th anniversary of Le Dîner en Blanc

in Vancouver, producer Events by Aly invited

the Folio.YVR team to the field of BC Place

Stadium for the annual all-white event's first

edition indoors. See if you can find yourself in

the photos by Kuna Photography!

For this month's retail therapy, we recommend

Omega for the latest edition of the

Speedmaster 38mm Collection, which is

dripping in diamonds, and book a test drive in

the classic and spacious Cadillac Optiq EV.

In this issue, we also showcase the works

of the legendary and highly respected artist

M iriam Aroeste, who has closed her Parker

Street studio and is relocating to Puerto

Vallarta, M exico.

As autumn draws near, I eagerly anticipate

the opportunity to curate the October issue of

West Coast stories that pay homage to the

myriad facets of life in this exciting city.

Cheers!

Helen Siwak

ROSEWOOD HOTEL GEORGIA | Vancouver, BC

R H G

Renowned as Vancouver's most

fashionable retreat, Rosew ood Hotel

Georgia has reopened following an

extensive five-month renovation to unveil

reimagined culinary concepts and luxury

rooms and suites.

The reopening also marks the debut

of an entirely new dining destination,

The Georgia Bar. It further strengthens

the property's robust culinary program

and pays homage to the iconic and

beloved personalities that once traversed

through its corridors.

Meticulously curated to serve as the

ultimate gathering place for culturally

minded travellers and local aesthetes,

Rosewood Hotel Georgia celebrates

Vancouver's rich history and heritage

within a modern setting, complemented

by an array of singular experiences. First

opened in 1927 as Hotel Georgia, the

property was last renovated in 20 11 when

it was introduced as Rosewood Hotel

Georgia, a testament to its enduring

legacy.

013

"Rosewood Hotel Georgia has undergone

an immense transformation, and we are

honored to welcome back our neighbors

and guests to rediscover Vancouver's

storied icon," said Safw an Abu Risheh,

Managing Director at Rosewood Hotel

Georgia.

"Our renovated rooms and suites were

distinctly designed to envelope guests in

residential-style hospitality, providing

comfort and warmth with a modern lens.

Through the revitalization of 1927 Lounge,

as well as the debut of The Georgia Bar

and later this year, the reopening of our

year-round Reflections Terrace, Rosewood

Hotel Georgia will further solidify its

position as the social epicenter of

Vancouver, offering travelers and locals

alike a world-class experience inspired by

this dynamic destination."

SEN SORIAL ROOM S AN D SUITES

Rosewood Hotel Georgia tapped

N ew York-based design firm Lillian Wu

Studio to redesign its 156 rooms and suites.

Reflecting the epitome of refined comfort

and sophistication, the accommodations

were thoughtfully crafted as a sensorial

experience with details such as plush, tufted

headboards, handles with bronze patina

holders, and hand- blow n glass fixtures.

With a colour palette reflecting tranquil

hues juxtaposed with patterned furnishings

and jew el- toned accents, the rooms and

suites offer guests an atmosphere of

serenity and timeless luxury.

Reflecting Rosewood's A Sense of

Place®philosophy, elegant nods to the

property's singular location are woven

throughout, such as silver leaf-painted glass

resembling the Pacific Dogwood, the

provincial flower of BC, and works of art

curated by a local gallery.

As the pinnacle of its offerings, the

12th-floor Lord Stanley Suite is a testament

to luxury. Spanning 1,280 -square-feet, this

suite is adorned in gold and royal hues, with

distinctive fixtures that exude opulence.

It features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a

spacious living room, a dining area for up

to six people, a terrace with a private

plunge pool, an outdoor fireplace, and

unobstructed views of Vancouver.

LOBBY AN D 1927 LOUN GE

Vancouver-based design firm Ste. M arie

Studio is at the helm of the redesigned

public spaces, including the lobby and

adjacent culinary concepts. Channelling

the opulence of the Roaring 20 s, the Lobby

balances the jubilance and elegance

typical of that era while layering in the

sense of locality and warmth synonymous

with the Rosewood brand.

Moody marbles and plush green velvets are

contrasted with contemporary flair and

punches of colourful textiles that effortlessly

link the front desk area and the 1927

Lounge dining space.

015

The newly refined bi-level 1927 Lounge,

designed to celebrate the city's rich

history, shines a light on the prestigious

narratives of downtown Vancouver

while continuing to offer fine dining

and artisanal cocktails.

The 1927 Lounge creates a hub of

activity and entertainment for visiting

guests and locals alike. It features live

performances from R&B, Jazz, and

Soul artists on selective nights and

special occasions.

The space's musical soul is further

emphasized by the sounds of a custom

Fazioli Pianoforti M odel F183 Art

Case Edition in California Walnut,

which serves as the perfect

accompaniment for world-class acts

that can be enjoyed from both 1927

and The Georgia Bar.

THE GEORGIA BAR

Embodying the spirit of the gilded

Art Deco era, The Georgia Bar is the

hotel's new mixology-focused concept.

The bar is centred around a dramatic,

u-shaped Arabescatto Orobico

marble-top bar with a backdrop of

stately mahogany- panelled w alls and

marble checkerboard floors.

The space is cocooned in bespoke,

custom furnishings produced by artisan

makers in Europe, outfitted in soft

upholsteries of crushed velvets and rich

textiles, ornate crystal fixtures, unique

archival objects, and an eclectic art

collection, all infusing the ambiance

with both elegance and character.

The Georgia Bar's cocktail program

transports guests to a storied world

honouring the luminaries and tales

central to the hotel's history.

Complex in artistry and technique, the

mixology program places the guest

experience first, with varying flavour

profiles centred around high-quality

and often painstakingly sourced

ingredients.

Taking guests on a journey through the

heart and history of Rosewood Hotel

Georgia, the signature cocktail menu

features odes to the property's

heritage, with selections including

The Patricia, a spirit-forward

cocktail that takes its name from the

" Patricia Room," a dedicated space

for HRH Edw ard, Prince of Wales,

dating from the original hotel's grand

opening; and The Herrick, a

wine-based cocktail with elements of

Earl Grey tea and Verjus Blanc that

pays tribute to Fred Herrick who

served as the property's shoe shiner for

54 years.

The Georgia Bar's culinary program

was carefully curated to immerse

guests in the greater Vancouver area,

traversing through the flavours of this

one-of-a-kind enclave's small yet

culturally diverse communities.

017

PROPHECY BY AT HOM E HOSPITALITY

The recently opened Prophecy is a

brand-new concept designed to

seamlessly blend classic sophistication

with modern allure, located in a storied

space beneath the hotel. It pays

homage to the legacy of Rosewood

Hotel Georgia and its role in

Vancouver's past and future elegant

nightlife.

An award-winning team oversees

Prophecy's cocktail program and has

collaboratively created a cocktail

menu inspired by w riters, poets,

musicians, and artists. Prophecy's food

menu features a range of elevated,

shareable options tailored to various

tastes.

Adding to the food and beverage

experience are state-of-the-art digital

works by Apollo, a pioneer in

THE

ANDERSON

RESI DENCE

RON THOM

ARCHI TECT

029

THE A NDERSON RESIDENCE | West Vancovuer, BC

R T

The Anderson Residence (1956), designed

by Canadian architect Ron Thom, is a

treasure of significant architecture inspired

by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and is

the subject of much conversation on the

West Coast this season. When it was on the

market and available for viewing, we spoke

with Vancouver-based Corey Klassen,

CMKBD NCIDQ IIDA DDA Accredited, who is

the Creative Director at Articulated Design

Studio, on the property's significance

and how historical builds influence today's

design decisions.

Thom was renowned for his unique approach

to design, creating homes that seamlessly

blended into their natural surroundings. The

3,0 22- square- foot home on a

13,111- square- foot lot is nestled on a slope

near Vinson Creek and was no exception.

He crafted a two-level house with a living

area upstairs, a spacious primary bedroom,

three additional large bedrooms, and a

den/ media room downstairs, all

harmoniously integrated with the landscape.

031

The Anderson Residence boasts a

breathtaking living room adorned with

vaulted ceilings, ribbon windows, and

exceptional millwork.

"The geometry of the exterior and interior

millw ork align to create this beautiful

repetition throughout the entire property.

Even a simple bathroom wall detail (like the

blue bathroom) connects you with the outdoor

features. Wood is such a linear material which

can be used to draw the eye and compliment

the other features of a space, as in our

Brew ery Creek Loft, the cabinetry and

millwork play with the rhythm of the exposed

brick of this heritage-listed building,"

observes Klassen, highlighting the intentional

design decisions that create a harmonious

living space.

The centrepiece of the living room is an

oversized concrete fireplace meticulously

detailed in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright. It

serves as a testament to the meticulous

craftsmanship that went into every aspect of

the home's design.

A flat-roof design also lends to the home's

West Coast M odern character.

033

Most of the structure's original features

remain intact, but the kitchen and bathrooms

have been updated.

"We appreciate when a kitchen is updated

to align with the historic features of a house.

This kitchen is designed to entertain and

embody a juxtaposition of the cabinetry and

millwork that is sensitive to the house, views

and how it functions. Having designed

kitchens that felt like they had always been

there is sometimes a goal for our clients. As a

designer, you can make choices that are

thoughtful that connect with the existing

style and details of a home," says Klassen.

035

The home's landscaped exterior includes

a wrap-around driveway, mature trees

and shrubs throughout, and a pond added

off the back patio, bringing a sense of

serenity to the property.

"Like Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen West in

Scottsdale, Arizona, the viewpoint of each

window in this house is considered as much

as the design of the surrounding

landscape. Drawing the eye to appreciate

a view can be as simple as how you

choose to line up the grain details of

hardwood flooring, much like we did

in our Broughton Street Project,

where the geometric rhythm of the oak

visually connects the kitchen and living

room together with stunning views of

Coal Harbour," shares Klassen.

The home is recognized as a Primary

Building of architectural significance

and is listed on the West Vancouver

Community Heritage Register.

037

THE ARCHITECT

Ron Thom was born in Penticton, BC, the son of

James Thom and Elena M yrtle Fennel. Thom

served as an aviator with the RCAF during World

War II and returned and graduated from the

Vancouver School of Art in 1947. He never

attended architecture school but apprenticed at

Thompson, Berw ick & Pratt, where he quickly

became recognized as an unusually gifted

draughtsman and designer.

In addition to The Anderson Residence, he also

designed other notable buildings in the Vancouver

area, such as the original BC Hydro Building

(Burrard & Nelson), several of which won M assey

Aw ards, the country's top award for architecture. In

1957, he became a registered architect at

Thompson, Berwick and Pratt and a partner shortly

afterward.

In 20 13 and 20 14, he was the subject of a major

retrospective exhibition, " Ron Thom and the

Allied Arts," featuring a collection of photographs,

drawings, letters, and furniture he designed for his

buildings. The exhibition was shown in BC in 20 13, at

the Gardiner M useum in Toronto beginning in

February 20 14, and at the Beaverbrook Gallery,

Fredericton, in N ovember 20 14.

Listing Realtor Sue Scott shared, "The world is

fascinated with Frank Lloyd Wright and

architecture inspired by his work. With this property,

Ron Thom has created a work of art with

incomparable detail. It is a true trophy property for

mid-century modern enthusiasts."

The chosen colour scheme of white,

Liting Chan and the team from

Paradise Events Inc. created magic in

transforming the ballroom into a

Sky-high crystal columns, a

The festivities continued with a delightful

The reception, emceed by Lavina Tan,

THE DUO BEHIN D DISTRICT

Their vision expanded to include a craft

Despite Max's passing before the

his honour, with industry veteran

M ichael Daley assuming the role of

Director of Operations to oversee its

fruition.

Wineries within the Village

A C

A PRICUS CELLA RS | Oliver, BC

Apricus Cellars was established out of a

profound appreciation for the South

Okanagan's climate, terrain, soil, and

sunlight, as well as the exquisite fruit that

thrives in this environment. The term

" Apricus" (ä?pri?k? s?) is derived from

medieval Latin, meaning both ' basking in

the sunshine' and ' delectable.' It

eloquently encapsulates the essence of

our wines and the exceptional

surroundings in which they are crafted.

At Apricus Cellars, the top priority is to

showcase the exceptional quality of the

locally grown fruit sourced just minutes

away. They unwaveringly adhere to the

belief that utilizing the finest grapes yields

the finest wines. Their diverse selection,

ranging from a crisp Pinot Gris to a robust

Cabernet Sauvignon- dominant M eritage

blend, reflects the unparalleled quality of

the grapes in every bottle.

Apricus's esteemed Vineyard Manager,

Sam Baptiste, hails from the Okanagan

and proudly belongs to the Osoyoos

Indian Band (OIB).

His profound connection with the land and

the vines, coupled with a comprehensive

education in horticulture, enology, and

viticulture from esteemed institutions,

including the University of Victoria, UC

Davis, and other reputable colleges,

enriches his unparalleled expertise and

commitment to the craft.

Apart from his formal training, Sam brings

an extensive wealth of knowledge about

the land, the grapes, and the art of

winemaking to the forefront. Beyond the

vineyard, his passions encompass golf,

automobiles, music, and w ine. Since

1990 , Sam has been the dedicated

general manager at N k' M ip Vineyards,

from which Apricus Cellars proudly sources

its grapes.

Apricus's accomplished Winemaker,

Aaron Crey, was raised in the

Fraser Valley and is a member of the

Cheam Band within the Sto:lo First

N ation. Initially drawn to environmental

conservation work with the

Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

113

It was Aaron's profound love for the

South Okanagan that led him to the

world of winemaking.

Embracing the challenge, Aaron has

cultivated a fervent passion for the

winemaking process, constantly striving to

capture the finest nuances and

characteristics of the grapes he works

with. He honed his expertise through

rigorous viticulture and enology studies at

Lincoln University in N ew Zealand. He

gained invaluable experience during his

seventeen-year tenure with the

winemaking team at N k' M ip Cellars.

Embracing the opportunity presented by

Sam, Aaron now serves as the sole

winemaker at Apricus Cellars and

cherishes the creative freedom granted

by his partners.

Then there is dedicated partner,

Willy Sabo, a diligent entrepreneur with a

background in salvage and surplus steel

sales. Although venturing into the

winemaking industry was not part of his

predetermined business plan, Willy has

always sought to collaborate with

exceptional individuals.

The fortuitous meeting with partners Sam

and Aaron set the stage for a truly

harmonious partnership. Their shared

appreciation for viticulture and a profound

interest in the fruits of their labour now

encapsulated within Apricus Cellars'

bottles served as the foundation of their

enduring friendship. Having spent summers

in Osoyoos, particularly at N k' M ip Resort ,

Willy and his family gained invaluable

insights and cultivated a deep

appreciation for Indigenous culture, laying

the groundwork for their passionate

involvement with Apricus Cellars.

In recent years, Willy and his wife, Kelly,

have embraced the South Okanagan as

their year-round sanctuary. Willy brings a

formidable sales background, a profound

love for all things wine, and an innate

talent for entertainment.

When greeting patrons at the winery, he

often humorously refers to himself as the

caretaker, passionately expressing that his

involvement with Apricus Cellars in the

District Wine Village is the perfect

semi-retirement passion project.

or out, the rapid shifts in temperature,

and the unique bouquet of scents in the

air combine to create an experience

that defies adequate description.

Along the Rhône, nestled between

Valence and Avignon, lies a renowned

feat of engineering known as the

Bollène- écluse. This remarkable lock

holds the distinction of being the

deepest on the Rhône River and,

indeed, in all of France. The

breathtaking journey through this lock

involves a dizzying descent followed by

a vertiginous ascent of 23 metres in a

matter of minutes, a distance

equivalent to the height of a

seven- story building.

The symphony of sounds accompanying

the locking process is truly

unforgettable, with its deep, resonant

reverberations. As the chamber fills

with water and the vessel ascends, the

brilliant sunlight floods back into the

canal, illuminating the surroundings

once more. Throughout the cruise,

navigating the various locks at different

times of the day provided consistently

exhilarating experiences.

ADVEN TURIN G IN FRAN CE

While a four-day getaway may be considered

short by some standards, it was truly indulgent

and incredibly relaxing. Beginning in Lyon, a

city known for its secret passageways and

bustling culinary scene, the Riverside Ravel

cruised along the river and through almost a

dozen locks, with anticipated stops in Viviers,

the tiniest city in France; picturesque

Provençal Tarascon; Arles, a town beloved

by Vincent Van Gogh; Port St. Louis, where

the river meets the sea; and Avignon, before

docking and disembarking in M arseilles.

AVIGN ON

Since 1940 , the city has grown along the left

bank of the Rhône River. From 130 9 to 1377, it

was the seat of the Catholic popes, and this

legacy can be seen in the massive Palais des

Papes (Popes' Palace) in the city centre,

surrounded by medieval stone ramparts.

ARLES

Once the provincial capital of ancient Rome,

Arles is surrounded by some of Europe's most

tranquil avian nature reserves and is home

to grand patrician houses. The city is also

known to have inspired many of Van Gogh's

masterpieces, and on the walking tour, guests

will retrace the footsteps of the Impressionist

master.

VIVIERS

A stroll through Viviers is like stepping back

to the M iddle Ages, for this former episcopal

town was spared the destruction of war. In

addition to the small shops, there is a

towering cathedral with three immense

tapestries gifted to the bishop by N apoleon

III. The viewpoint in the upper town is a

highlight in every sense of the word.

147

A TRUFFLE A DAY

To thrive, truffles require specific conditions:

a suitable host tree, particular soil, and a

specific climate. They flourish in cold winters

with minimal frost, humid and mild springs,

and hot, dry summers, with rain in July and

August to support their growth.

Precipitation, temperature, and light are

essential factors for truffle development, and

the climate significantly impacts the

regularity and quality of truffle production.

Truffles typically thrive in a M editerranean

climate with minimal frost, occasional

summer rainfall, and adequate warmth.

There are 32 species of truffles in Europe,

but only two types are recognized as truffles

in France: Tuber Mélanosporum and Tuber

Brumale.

THE TRUFFLES SOUGHT

Tuber M élanosporum, also known as The

Black Diamond, is harvested from early

December to the end of March and can vary

from the size of a nut to that of a potato.

Gilles' grandfather once found one that

weighed over one kilogram!

The Tuber Brumale is harvested during the

same period and is often confused with the

black truffle. It is similar but has more

prominent veins with more space between

them, emitting a spicy smell with a less

significant taste.

Tuber Uncinatum, the Burgundy Truffle, is an

excellent edible. It has an irregular shape

with a dark colour inside, marked by

medium-sized warts that are not vertically

striped.

Tuber Aestivum, the Summer Truffle, is

harvested from early May to late November.

It resembles the Black Diamond Truffle but

has more prominent warts. Its flesh is whitish,

firm, and faintly perfumed.

Tuber M agnatum Pico, best known as the

White Truffle, is harvested from early

September to the end of December. An

excellent edible with a garlic aroma, it is

highly sought after in Italy and only recently

discovered in France!

AYM E FAM ILY HISTORY

In 180 0, the wine culture on the slopes of

Tricastin was thriving until an invasion of

phylloxera destroyed most of the vines.

During this period, Joseph- Pierre Ayme

decided to plant his first truffle oaks. In 1850 ,

he began harvesting the Tuber

Mélanosporum. Emboldened by this

successful experiment, the trade with truffle

trees began, and today's purveyor of these

sought-after spores is the fourth-generation

truffle expert Gilles Ayme.

The Ayme Truff home also houses a small

showroom and boutique where truffle

enthusiasts can visit to acquire the day's

bounty and freshly pressed oils or arrange

for worldwide shipping.

Platform and Ultium Drive units, along with

low-rolling-resistance tires, also play an

stored in the battery pack for future use.

A Dual- Level Charge Cord allows the driver to
