TOM M A SO M ELA NI | Sarai Bespok e Show room
S
BJason Sarai, founder and creative
director of Sarai Bespoke, recently
hosted an exclusive trunk show at his
showroom in the historic east side
Dominion Building.
The two-day event was a rare opportunity
for well-heeled guests to meet a master
of Italian craftsmanship, Tommaso M elani,
in person, view and discover a wide
selection of Stefano Bemer's handcrafted
shoes, flip through rings of luxury material
samples, and enjoy the camaraderie of
being in the company of others who
appreciate the finest in men's fashion.
We were personally on hand as Melani
presented his collection, took
measurements, and helped guests
navigate through the made-to-order and
customization options.
On display was an extensive collection of
sample shoes, shipped from Florence to
provide inspiration and a plethora of
samples and swatches. Under the astute
guidance of Melani, guests created a
unique pair (or two), which were finalized
and ordered.
Melani shared, "Trunk shows are how I
started 12 years ago, extending the
reach of Stefano Bemer. What I learned
back then is how interesting and exciting
it is to, for such a niche brand, chart
new territories and meet people in
faraw ay cultures. I made friends and
clients, and, to this day, I make time to go
on trunk shows myself because it refreshes
the memory of that thrill and rekindles a
side of my entrepreneurial spirit that
would otherwise get numbed if I was
sitting in an office all the time!"
013
Jason Sarai, who founded Style by Sarai
a decade ago, understands the
importance of offering this expertise to
the Vancouver community.
"We aspire to surround ourselves with, and
learn from, the best sartorial brands in
their world ? brands that exemplify true
craftsmanship, timeless design, and
produce the highest quality products.
Stefano Bemer, a company that has been
making some of the best handmade shoes
in the world for more than 40 years,
is one of those brands."
"Our goal is to provide access and
experiences to those world-renowned
companies and brands with our community
here in Vancouver. We live in a
w orld- class city, and we should
experience the best sartorial products the
world has to offer."
"And we're excited to continue building
our relationship in the future. Not only is
Sarai Bespoke one of a select few ateliers
to offer access to Stefano Bemer shoes
year-round (we are equipped with their
exclusive fitters and range of material
options so clients can build their
made-to-order shoes even when Tommaso
isn't in town), we are planning a
destination soirée in N ew York, where
Stefano Bemer has launched a brand new
store on historic Park Avenue."
THE BON D IS STRON G
The relationship between Sarai Bespoke
and Stefano Bemer goes back almost
seven years. The two esteemed brands
began working together in 20 18, with their
collaboration at Cappelleria Bertacchi in
Gastow n. Sarai says, "It was at that first
event that Tommaso and I really
connected both professionally and
personally, first over our love of
craftsmanship and design, and then
cycling. I knew he was an avid cyclist, so I
organized a ride from Vancouver to
Horseshoe Bay so he could experience the
beauty of our city."
In 20 19, Sarai hosted a Stefano Bemer
trunk show, this time at the Sarai Bespoke
showroom, which included Melani's
attendance at the ' Soirée by Sarai' event
at the Rosew ood Hotel Georgia. The
black-tie event included guests who
arrived from Chicago, San Diego, and
Toronto who enjoyed an art exhibition at
Hublot, a four-course dinner in the York
Room of the award-winning and M ichelin
Guide- recommended Haw ksw orth
Restaurant, cigars and cocktails in the
penthouse, and an overnight stay at the
hotel for everyone.
015
THE N AM ESAKE
Stefano Bemer was a visionary who
established his company in 1983 with
the ambitious goal of creating the
perfect Italian shoe. As the brand
gained popularity, it attracted
notable clients such as actor
Daniel Day- Lew is, designer
Gianfranco Ferre, and singer
Julio Iglesias, to name a few.
Bemer's curiosity and passion for
shoe-making drove him to master the
infinite variations of this craft. He
began by repairing shoes, then
attended courses and w orkshops, and
eventually developed his technique,
which is now widely recognized and
appreciated for its elegance and
quality. The brand became synonymous
with the highest standard of Italian
sophistication, gaining a reputation
for style and refinement.
After Bemer's untimely demise in 20 12,
Melani took the reins and pushed the
company into its second phase of
development.
Melani ensured that Bemer's legacy
and vision would be given a more
prominent stage through an exclusive
shoe-making training program, the
finest bespoke shoe-making, an
unparalleled made-to-order line, and a
perfectly crafted ready-to-wear
collection. All these offerings reflect the
same quality paradigm that Bemer
established, ensuring that the brand
continues to thrive.
ON QUIET LUXURY
"Quite early in my life, I realized that
brand doesn't necessarily mean value. I
don't like being 'evaluated' based on
the logos that I carry, and most of all, I
believe that the way you carry it
determines your appearance. I put the
man (and the woman) first, and I create
an impression that is unrelated to the
brands they are wearing. Style,
manners, and ease are independent
of branding."
"You recognize a man of taste and can
surely recognize the quality of his
shopping choices, although you might
not know who made the items they are
wearing. Not every brand that claims
to be ' M ade in Italy' is actually MADE
in Italy. Not every product that is 'Made
in Italy' is handmade. Not every
handmade product is w ell made. That's
why we do not label our product 'Made
in Italy' nor 'handmade.' We want the
client to be the judge of the quality!"
THE SCHOLA ACADEM Y
In Florence, there is an academy
dedicated to craftsmanship and
uncompromising quality. It is an
ecosystem where future artisans from
all over the world learn and improve
their skills.
Each program is led by M aestros, who
guide students in completing their
paths and learning to make products
autonomously. Melani explained his
relationship with the academy.
017
"Schola Academy was born as a
natural development of the
experience I have lived through my
entire life. Scuola del Cuoio, my
family's leather workshop, was
created by my grandfather as a
school to train orphans of WW2 in
a craft and then became a
company that hired those newly
trained artisans to make quality
custom leather pieces."
"Training has always been the way
to create new master craftsmen
and I adopted that paradigm
when I took over Stefano Bemer in
20 13 to grow our capacity of
production without losing our
commitment to the highest quality."
"When my partner at Schola,
Alessandro Colombo, and I started
thinking of how that applies to all
the exquisite crafts we proudly
preserve in our city, we decided to
create this open hub for
craft-learning and venture into
other fields with the same spirit of
really preserving and transiting
craftsmanship to the artisans of
tomorrow."
REDEFIN IN G: RFORPEOPLE
Melani, a fashion entrepreneur with
a passion for sustainability, has
also launched a stunning new label
called RforPeople. This label is
more than a 'feel good' fashion
brand that speaks to the hearts of
those who want their wardrobe to
reflect their values.
RforPeople encourages individuals
to rethink their relationship with
consumption and to act with
intention, all while looking
impeccably stylish.
One of the most fascinating
aspects of RforPeople is its
zero- impact promise. The brand
encourages its supporters to send
their ' lovingly w orn- out sneakers
(of any brand)' for refurbishing,
repairing, refashioning, or
disassembling and disposing of
responsibly.
All footwear and garments in the
collection are the result of an
entire supply chain located in
Italy, with workers receiving
healthcare, paid leave, and
retirement benefits.
The 'R' in RforPeople stands for
Responsibility, Refashion, Reduce,
Recycle, and Respect, which truly
reflects Melani's values and vision
for the brand. Having spent time
with Melani, it Is clear that he is
committed to creating a
sustainable fashion industry that is
respectful of the planet and the
people involved in the production
process.
"I have the utmost respect for issues
concerning the environment, and I
strongly believe that we must put
effort into adopting sustainable
practices to reduce CO2 emissions
and preserve our beautiful planet."
019
"Nevertheless, it's us humans that we must put
first, and there cannot be a program to
protect the environment without a plan to
foster humanity."
"Respect must come first, and that starts with
labour, both in terms of conditions and
compensation. Rethink is the key to progress:
we must challenge our knowledge and beliefs
to have real breakthroughs."
"So, I put Rethink at the centre of
RforPeople's philosophy to remind myself, my
staff and the people who will come in touch
with our brand and policies about it."
"I also made the RforPeople paradigm the
leading policy for all the other brands I'm
involved with so that we all are inspired to
the same ideas and bring marginal
improvements in each sector of our business."
"For example, all of our dust bags, shopping
bags, and accessory cases are made by a
social enterprise that only hires w orkers
w ith disabilities and trains them for specific
jobs and positions in the chain of production
but also offers them a positively charged
environment that provides fair compensation
and a sense of personal accomplishment."
"On that note, my family has started the
M arcello Gori Foundation, which provides
six scholarships every year to allow
youngsters who have gone through a rough
patch in life to learn not just the skill but the
way of craft as a life path itself."
EXPERIEN CIN G VAN COUVER
"I was due to stay at the Rosew ood Hotel
Georgia, but it was under renovations,
so I was rebooked at the Wedgew ood, an
old-school hotel with wonderful service. The
best meal I had was at Kissa Tanto, which
blends, hear hear, Italian and Japanese
cuisines in a lively, cool and sophisticated
(just enough) setting. It is always a pleasure
visiting the city, and I wish I had more time to
walk around. Next time, I want to make time
to visit Vancouver Island by boat!"
Never forget that each pair undergoes a
meticulous process that spans over 10 0 hours
in an antique chapel in Oltrarno. The
exquisite stylings of each shoe reflect the
unparalleled craftsmanship and artistry that
goes into their creation, making them a true
work of art.
Stefano Bemer's legacy of crafting the finest
shoes using the most exceptional practices
and materials is a testament to his
unwavering commitment to perfection.

037
THE EARLY YEARS
Born in 1984 in the small village of
Dosanjh Kalan, Jalandhar, Diljit's early
life was rooted in humble beginnings.
His father, Balbir Singh, worked as a
former employee of Punjab Roadw ays,
while his mother, Sukhw inder Kaur, was
a homemaker. Diljit, the middle child,
has an elder sister and a younger
brother.
He spent his early childhood in Dosanjh
Kalan. Then, he moved to Ludhiana,
Punjab, where he completed his formal
education, graduating high school from
Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School.
While still in school, he began his
singing career by performing Kirtan at
local gurdwaras.
The beginning of his lifelong passion for
music can be traced back to his days
as a student when he often performed
in which he would sing Kirtan and other
religious songs. Diljit first appeared in
the music industry with the T-series
division in 20 0 4 with the song ' Ishq Da
Uda Ada.' During the same year, the
same record label also issued his
second studio album, ' Dil.' His third

titled ' Smile,' gave him a much-needed
business breakthrough.
The record received a lot of positive
feedback. In 20 0 9, he came out with
not one but four singles all at once,
including ' Dancing w ith M e,'
' Bhaga Singh,' ' N o Stress,' and
' Pow er of Duets.'
039

THE HISTORICAL ROSEWOOD
The Rosewood Hotel Georgia is a
cornerstone of luxury hospitality in
Vancouver. It boasts an incredible
building with an even more, often
overlooked, fascinating history.
Following its grand debut in the roaring
1920 s, Hotel Georgia became a
Vancouver legend for introducing
unprecedented luxuries to the young city
and Canada's West Coast.
Over the decades, it hosted a long list
of Hollywood stars and royalty, from
John and Ethel Barrymore,
M arlene Dietrich, and her 40 suitcases,
to Errol Flynn, Sir Laurence Olivier, and
Gary Cooper. Notably, British royalty
graced the hotel early on. HRH Edw ard,
Prince of Wales, and his brother
George, the Duke of Kent, stayed in
1927 for the Seaforth Highlander' s Ball,
a gala event celebrated at the hotel.
049
During the Jazz Era, the hotel was home
to BC's most popular radio station,
CKWX, which broadcast from its studio
on the penthouse level for over a
decade up to 1941.
In 1950, the iconic pant-wearing
Katharine Hepburn introduced
late-night room service at the Hotel
Georgia, preferring to dine in the
privacy of her room, due to her
preference to dining late and without
bother.
Entertainment impresario Hugh Pickett
often hosted show business legends like
Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra,
Sammy Davis Jr, and even the iconic
rockers the Rolling Stones, further
solidifying the hotel's status as a premier
entertainment destination. By the
mid-century, the hotel had become a
favourite gathering place for the
immortals of show business.
After undergoing a complete renovation
and reopening in 20 11 as Rosewood
Hotel Georgia, the hotel returned to its
former grandeur with the additional
elegance of extensive amenities and the
impeccable service of Rosewood.
From the meticulous restoration of
old-world craftsmanship to the
installation of the most luxurious
furnishings and the latest technology,
Rosewood Hotel Georgia offers an
unmatched combination of legacy and
luxury? a return to the golden age of
hotel travel.
051
A FRESH FACE FOR 20 24
On the first day of this year, Rosewood Hotel
Georgia began a second extensive
refurbishment of the adored gathering spot.
The refurbishment will encompass signature
spaces throughout the hotel, including the
lobby and 1927 Lobby Lounge, its
accommodations, and the beloved
Reflections Terrace.
The new design will seamlessly connect
contemporary elements with classic luxury
features, showcasing materials ranging from
polished marble and rich dark w ood to
plush velvet textures that reflect our bustling
city.
Additionally, a 6-foot Fazioli F183
in Burled California Walnut from
M anuel Bernaschek' s Show case Pianos has
been installed in the lobby and its beautiful
full concert grand sound will, without a doubt,
add to the allure of the experience at the
hotel.
Rosewood Hotel Georgia has been
consistently recognized as one of the best
places to stay by the world's leading
publications, travel magazines, and consumer
organizations.
In 20 23, it was named # 1 Best Hotel in
Canada by the US N ew s & World Report
and received, for the 11th consecutive year,
the Five- Star Aw ard by Forbes Travel Guide.

LAB LAUN CH
As part of the public programme, a
brand new LAB was inaugurated at
Geneva's Palexpo. This LAB, a hub of
innovation and creativity, served as a
platform where schools, start-ups, and
exhibiting brands presented their
visionary ideas for tomorrow's
watchmaking world. Students from
the Swiss art and design school ECAL
presented more than a dozen
groundbreaking projects for the
occasion, sparking excitement about
the future of watchmaking.
The expansion of Watches and
Wonders public programme marks a
significant step towards inclusivity for
the trade show ? now in its fourth
year ? from an exclusive event for
industry professionals to a city-wide
celebration of the culture of
watchmaking, welcoming all
generations and watch enthusiasts.
N EW IN N OVELTIES
Over 54 brands presented new
watches? or novelties, as they are
called in the watch world. The
tradeshow is by far the biggest event
on the horological calendar, and its
participants include A. Lange &
Söhne, Cartier, Chanel, Chopard,
Grand Seiko, Hermès, Hublot, IWC,
Jaeger- LeCoultre, Oris, Panerai,
Patek Philippe, Piaget, Rolex,
Roger Dubuis, Tag Heuer, Tudor,
Vacheron Constantin, Van Cleef &
Arpels, and Zenith.
061
This year, the fair welcomed a thrilling lineup
of newcomers, including Bremont, Eberhard
& Co, Gerald Charles, N omos, N orqain,
and Raymond Weill. Swiss watchmaker
ArtyA is also made its grand debut at the fair
with the release of a new timepiece,
' Purity Stairw ay to Heaven,' which also
commemorates the brand's 15th anniversary.
Piaget debuted the thinnest tourbillon, which
clocks in at svelte 2 mm, or about the width
of a nickel. Bulgari broke its record for the
world's thinnest mechanical watch (0 .3 mm
thinner than the Piaget), and Vacheron
Constantin unveiled the most complicated
watch in the world.
Eleven years in the making, the Vacheron
Constantin Berkley Grand Complication,
which features 2,877 parts and 63
complications, including the first Chinese
perpetual calendar, was commissioned by
insurance billionaire William Berkley, who
also owns the second most complicated
timepiece with 57 complications.
IWC has become the world's fifth
watchmaker to make a secular perpetual
calendar (complicated enough to handle
leap year 'exceptions' so it theoretically will
not need setting before the year 40 0 0 ).
The colour green is still thriving, and Grand
Seiko is still making beautifully textured dials
inspired by random elements of Japanese
landscapes, like the new Genbi Valley dial.
Cartier has released some colourful Santos
models.
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
For the first time, the public attended
product presentations led by brands to learn
about the complex mechanics behind luxury
timepieces. Many watchmakers, like Italian
Maison Panerai, also held exclusive events.
Panerai is one of the pioneers advocating
for a more ' holistic experience' for
watch collectors that goes beyond
buying a product. The brand ran its own
' Panerai Xperiences Program' for buyers of
its limited-edition Experience timepieces,
which has seen clients train with professional
sailors and US N avy Seals.
Watchmakers like Swiss heritage brand
Baume & M ercier went beyond traditional
presentations, offering unique experiences
for attendees. For instance, they held a
' treasure hunt' at their stand, engaging
visitors in a series of tasks. The lucky winner
was rewarded with a timepiece from the
brand's signature Riviera collection, adding
an element of excitement and anticipation
to the event.
063
TREN DS & TAKE- AWAYS
As for trends to look out for at this year's
show, smaller watches ? with a diameter of
40 mm and under ? have been increasingly
popular over the past year. This reflects the
grow ing influence of female collectors in
the luxury watch market, which is predicted
to continue past 20 24. As a result, tinier
timepieces will likely feature prominently in
Watches and Wonders, marking a
significant shift in the industry's design and
marketing strategies.
In a similar vein, gender- neutral styles
have also been growing in popularity, as
have jewellery watches by brands like
Cartier, Piaget, and Chopard. The industry
shift in consumer preferences signifies a
broader acceptance of diverse design
aesthetics in the industry, breaking away
from standard models and opening up to
various design possibilities. It also reflects
the industry's efforts to cater to a
broader audience and adapt to
changing societal norms.
AN D THAT' S A WRAP
It took 3,50 0 steps to explore the entire
Salon, but even more to realize the full
experience, which included the
' In The City' program and new
Watchmaking Village activities.
Watches and Wonders Geneva opened its
doors to an even broader audience this
year, welcoming all generations while
continuing to balance inclusivity and
exclusivity around an industry that has
become more inspiring than ever.
The celebration of watchmaking continued
with an incredible evening party in the city
centre that won everyone over.
Boutiques sold out late into the night, while
the Lost Frequencies concert transformed
Geneva's quayside into an open-air festival
for all to enjoy.

The 20 24 exhibit is a testament to

including Alexander M cQueen,

All exhibits are themed according to

flowers. The concept is one that
Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge,
The Costume Institute, crafted when
pondering fashion's connection to the
human senses.
"The exhibition endeavours to

CON N ECTIN G THROUGH N ATURE
The 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening
Fashion' exhibition features approximately
250 opulent, w ell- restored garments and
accessories that are connected visually
through nature.
On entering the exhibition, a sequence of
self- contained galleries is organized into
three sections, focused on earth, air, and
water.
One gallery, arranged as a garden,
includes a glass greenhouse displaying
hats blooming with various flowers and
surrounded by subtle 'smell-scapes' that
challenge olfactory expectations.
The show takes advantage of life's sensory
capacities. Throughout the exhibit, there
are aromatic histories of hats bearing
floral motifs; galleries' w alls are embossed
with select garments' embroidery;
soft voices read poetry and stories, and
birds chirp.
While preparing for the exhibit, sewing
artisans needed to mend some clothes,
accessories, and other garments from
various periods. Some galleries feature
actual ' sleeping beauties' ? gowns lying
flat on the floors in vignettes? so fragile
that they can no longer be used to
dress mannequins.
071
"The Met's innovative spring 20 24
Costume Institute exhibition pushes the
boundaries of your imagination and
invites you to experience the multisensory
facets of a garment, many of which get
lost when entering a museum collection as
an object," said M ax Hollein, the Met's
Marina Kellen French Director and CEO.
"'Sleeping Beauties' will heighten our
engagement with these masterpieces of
fashion by evoking how they feel, move,
sound, smell, and interact when being
worn, ultimately offering a deeper
appreciation of the integrity, beauty, and
artistic brilliance of the works on display."
The section of the exhibit includes
creations by couture foundation designers
such as Cristóbal Balenciaga, Hattie
Carnegie, Lilly Daché, Hubert de
Givenchy, Deirdre Haw ken, Stephen
Jones, Guy Laroche, M adame Pauline,
M ainbocher, Elsa Schiaparelli, Sally

RStefano Ricci has partnered with the

research and conservation of
Galápagos giant tortoises.
To showcase the ecosystem's natural
and fragile beauty, Filippo and
N iccolò Ricci led a wonderous
excursion to the Islands with
world-renowned natural history
photographer M attias Klum
(National Geographic Fellow) to
capture the S/ S 20 24 Collection.
Filippo and Niccolò Ricci were along
every step as the team explored the
remote corners of the legendary
archipelago.
From Las Grietas to Tortuga Bay,
El Garrapatero, Santa Fe Island,
Isla Guy Faw kes Sur to Punta
Bow ditch, Sierra N egra volcano,
El Chato Ranch to Los Gemelos and
Galapagos Safari Camp ? following
in the footsteps of the great naturalist
Charles Darw in who first explored the
islands in 1835 during his expedition on
the brig-sloop HM S Beagle.
During this production, the Ricci
brothers oversaw the styling of the
Spring/ Summer 20 24 Collection. They
came into close contact with the
Galápagos Islands' endemic fauna and
flora, including sea lions, marine and
land iguanas, Sally Lightfoot crabs,
brown pelicans, frigatebirds,
blue-footed boobies, Darwin's finches,
sharks, Scalesia trees and Galápagos
giant tortoises.

This new chapter of the Stefano Ricci
Explorer Project was carried out under the
careful supervision of the Galápagos
N ational Park Directorate and with
absolute respect for the archipelago's
fragile and unique ecosystems. With this
vision, the company, founded in 1972 by
designer Stefano Ricci, is joining the
frontlines of conservation action by
supporting the research efforts undertaken
by the Charles Darwin Foundation to
protect the emblematic animals.
"We saw the melting of Europe's largest
glacier last fall in Iceland. In this new
adventure, we experienced raw nature up
close in an ancient and primordial way.
In these unique places, species have
evolved independently to survive
extreme conditions."
"The evolution of species is our beacon, our
inspiration. And it is by visiting such locations
and meeting passionate scientists and
researchers in the cradle of evolution itself
that one can truly come to terms with the
meaning of sustainability."
"It is a theme that many talk about, but that
few truly understand. We are determined to
continue with this mission: Explore the

Ricci.
This production was created under the
supervision of Terry D. Garcia (CEO of

COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS
Since ancient times, and now more than
ever, fashion has been expressing the
tale of oneself, the letter describing who
we are. Clothes are the mirror of the
soul, the fulcrum of emotions and
personality.
In the Stefano Ricci Spring/ Summer
20 24 Collection, these archetypes
appear as flashes of truth, according to
the brand's tradition. The brand has
always held a high standard of
excellence and is truly ' M ade' in Italy.
The brand adheres to the needs of the
modern man, who explores beyond any
geographical and social border.
The colours of nature are masterful,
giving way to a symphony of pure, light,
ductile elegance for the man who
travels the w orld and comes to know
unexplored lands.
The collection is for a wardrobe that
takes the best style and reinterprets it
with the aesthetic elements of comfort.
Nothing is excessive, even in the
exaltation of an authentic luxury made
of sublime materials and modern
techniques which create an aspect of
living. It is an immediately recognizable
style because the highest manual skills
are paired with excellence.
085
Outerwear is in the colours of
impenetrable forests, from
neutral- to- bark green tones, with
'worn' pockets and collar; it is an
unforgettable garment straight out of
memories.
Cotton or linen and silk blend
sweatshirts are perfect for the modern
explorer, with the subtle logo hidden in
the couture linings. Some colours recall
the waters of the marshes, the cactus
forests, the shells of giant turtles, the
enchanted waters of the Ecuadorian
islands, the rust and brown of the stones
and cliffs, the SR blue that shines like a
sapphire, the dark bursts of the colour of
lava, and an antique pink.
Knitwear is prevalent, with refined
finishings and yarns. The jogging suits
have ease and style, in linen and silk or
silk and cotton, which have become
irreplaceable and refined, faded jeans
with sharp details, or cargo trousers
worn with an overshirt or light dust coat
paired with trousers.
For the evening, outerwear fabrics
woven by the mastery of the weavers
of the Antico Setificio Fiorentino
are paired with dreamy shirts with
French cuffs embellished with precious
white gold rectangular cufflinks
set with diamonds, the details
of the unmistakable style of the
Florentine M aison.

Adventurer, rebel, artist, icon, whatever
mark you are making, Jaxon How ell's
hats are 10 0 % unique and made to
stand out. Each hat is carefully shaped,
sewn, and styled by hand in Vancouver,
using sustainably sourced felts,
hand-woven Ecuadorian straw s,
upcycled textiles, and trimmings he
collects from local fabric stores and
vintage shops or markets and
bazaars while travelling the world.
"As a kid, I quickly discovered an
artistic streak and eye for details.
You'd rarely find me without a pencil,
paintbrush, or camera in my hands."
"In my teen years, I got more into
creative expression, fashion, and
wearing all kinds of hats."
FROM IN JURY TO OPPORTUN ITY
In 20 0 6, Howell owned a custom
furniture and millwork company, but in
20 19, a car accident changed his
journey.
A wrist injury made woodworking very
painful and often impossible, and the
pandemic further impacted his craft.
With everyone's ability restricted, the
demand for woodworking evaporated.
091
PUSHIN G FORWARD
Despite the sudden physical
challenges, Howell's spirit remained
undeterred. He made the courageous
decision to close the w oodw orking
chapter of his life and embark on a
new journey.
"I needed to feed my love for
craftsmanship in another way, so I
started making hats as a hobby. It
allowed me to still create something
with my hands without putting
unnecessary strain on my body. With
the pandemic in full force, all
millinery classes were on an
indefinite hold, and the opportunity
to apprentice under someone was
not an option."
"It was a lot of trial and error in the
beginning. Hat making is a pretty
secretive trade so there's not much to
find online in the way of learning.
Luckily, I have a knack for picking
things up so what I did find on
YouTube I was able to put into
practice. I polished my technique
along the way and started creating
some pieces I was really proud of."
093
BUILDIN G A N EW BRAN D
As word spread through the
community that Howell was now
creating bespoke hats, he soon
fielded calls and received orders
from not only family and friends but
also people internationally whom he
had never met.
"To me, hats are an extension of
personality. You want them to
capture a person's essence. It's the
same with a great portrait
photograph. And no two people are
the same, so no two hats should be
either. The rest of it comes down to
quality. The antique finishing nail in
each hat is my signature touch. It's
a nod to my woodworking days,
and the elegant, timeless feel I aim
to invoke in all my work."
He truly believes, and his actions do
not bely this, that in an age of fast
fashion and mass production, as a
society, we have lost the magic of
enjoying things crafted meticulously
with passion, things that will ensure.
"My goal is to create beautiful,
one-of-a-kind pieces that last a
lifetime, and make you feel a spark
of joy every time you slip them on."
095

FPAPER TRAIL, Gallery Jones, M ay 20 24
The Works of Fiona Ackerman
"During the development phase of this
show, I read an essay by German art
historian Wilhelm Worringer entitled
Abstraction and Empathy (190 8),
translated into English and published in
the 1950s. He divided painting into two
aesthetic schools: abstraction on one
side - attempting to connect with the
spiritual, existential and intangible, and
on the other, what he defined as
empathetic painting (naturalistic),
projecting our physical connection to
material existence."
"Worringer?s essay not only elevated
abstraction to the ?respectable?level of
representational artwork, it entrusted a
fundamentally important role in the
human creative project: to explore the
fleeting, obscured and experiential
aspects of mortal life."
"It struck me that I have never committed
to one lane. I continually move in
opposing directions, swerving freely
across an invisible divide, pursuing a
series of expressionistic abstract
paintings, then veering into naturalism
with surrealist recklessness."
105
"My statements, however, have been sure: I
work with action and reaction, tightening my
realism hand for a series of paintings to
manipulate, (or empathize with, for
Worringer) the natural world, until I?m
overcome with an urge to cast that world
aside and run away into creative impulse. A
next series of paintings is often born of a
need to be spontaneous, expressive and
loose, to look inside rather than out."
"Beginning this new series, my descriptive for
these two directions in painting began to
lose hold, perhaps even invert."
"I discovered that a very expressionistic
piece, painted to feel loose, impulsive and
fleeting could be transformed by the
addition of a realistically painted piece of
lightly adhered masking tape. With one
small addition of something appearing less
permanent than a gestural mark (tape, a
post-it note, etc.), realism takes on an
expressive fragility, and the gestural
abstraction becomes the painting?s bones,
the solid ground on which realism sits lightly."
"In his essay, Worringer wrote: ?The need for
empathy and the need for abstraction are
two poles of human artistic experience.""
"Walking back and forth from home to
studio over the winter, I began to question
whether this is true, in my experience."
107
109
"Do I flip flop between poles, or do I
prefer to lose myself in a spectrum? As
the series of paintings grew, I
continued to walk back and forth
along familiar streets, through the
change of seasons, I began to feel
increasingly uncomfortable with
Worringer?s dichotomy. Without
noticing, I diverted my attention to the
actual poles on my route: the lamp
posts hosting notices of people?s needs
and offers. My empathetic and
abstract paintings began to
incorporate messages left by
strangers. ?French Teacher From
France? seeking students. Another
evaporated cat... All found their way
into the paintings."
"Out of this came the title of the
exhibition: Paper Trail. I paint my way
back and forth, looking for my lane,
refusing to stand in one place. It is not
possible to separate engagement with
the material world from personal
interior space. My paper trail of
paintings leads to one conclusion: all
of art is an abstraction, exploring the
very real experience of fleeting life.
There is, finally, no division between
worlds."

BALLET
BC
FOR
EVER
113
BA LLET BC | Queen Elizabeth Theatre
BFollowing a season of sold-out
houses, record-breaking
fundraising campaigns, and rave
reviews from critics and audiences
alike, Ballet BC returned to the
Queen Elizabeth Theatre for
three nights for its season finale
' FOR EVER: A Full Evening of
Works by M edhi Walerski.'
The evening included three works
from Artistic Director and French
choreographer M edhi Walerski,
including Chamber and
SWAY? both new to Ballet BC's
repertoire? and a world premiere,
his sixth for the company since first
commissioned in 20 11, were
presented.
"I have been a part of Ballet BC
for almost 15 years, so it brings me
great pride to share each of these
works with our audiences who
have given so much to me over the
years," shared Walerski.
"I am now at a point in my career,
and in my trajectory with this
company, where I deeply value
the community we have built.
Vancouver has absolutely become
a global centre for dance
creation, and I feel more fortunate
than ever to have the opportunity
to contribute to that, and
to work next to some inspiring,
like-minded artistic collaborators
along the way."
The landmark evening featured a
new creative collaborator for
Walerski, the internationally
acclaimed visual artist LYLE XOX
[Folio.YVR Issue # 18]. Known for
work that combines his experience
in art, fashion, design and
make-up artistry to create striking
images using his face and body as
canvas and plinth.
115
At the company?s final program of the 23/ 24
season, FOR EVER, an artistic collaboration
was years in the making. Stepping out onto the
stage wearing the creation was company
artist Emanuel Dostine.
Themes that were explored for the piece,
which was featured in the world premiere of
Medhi?s latest creation for the company
' Pieces of Tomorrow ,' included loss, reuse,
transformation, and reconstruction.
A central facet of Lyle?s multi-media work is
discovering and utilizing found objects and
discarded materials to create something new.
For this collaboration, materials were sourced
from near and far, including Japan, M exico,
and from within the Ballet BC family itself,
giving it special meaning.
Walerski said, ?The creation of 'Pieces of
Tomorrow' began with the concept of legacy.
Drawing inspiration from LYLE XOX?s sculptures
made from found materials, the dancers and I
aimed to create the choreography by
exploring themes of destruction, creation, and
reconstruction."
"Just as Lyle transforms materials, we focused
on repurposing movement elements to breathe
new life into them."
"Johan Ullen?s recomposed violin sonatas from
Bach deepened our exploration with a
profound layer. The recycling of musical
material echoed our approach, enriching our
work with a sense of continuity and growth.
Loss, transformation, and rebirth. The cyclical
nature of artistic expression, and life.?
117
To which, LYLE XOX added, ?Inspiration
always begins with the found objects
themselves. Objects discovered or gifted
from various parts of the globe, including
discarded remnants from members of the
Ballet BC family."
"It was essential to use pieces that
reflected life in its many facets; embracing
all genders and telling a story of creation,
transformation, loss and rebirth. A sculpture
that encapsulated strength and fragility."
"Medhi and I were instinctively drawn to the
colour gold. A hue that is illuminating,
sacred and precious; a colour with a
spiritual connection. The sculpture would
live in the environment of movement, and so
this particular piece was constructed in
consideration of that."
"Watching it come alive on the dancer for
the first time was an incredibly moving
experience, a moment where two art forms
bonded together."
AN EVEN IN G OF EXPLORATION
In addition to 'Pieces of Tomorrow,'
Walerski presented one of his most
acclaimed and largest-scale works to date
' Chamber.' Inspired by Stravinsky' s
' The Rite of Spring," the piece is a visually
rich echo of what the music provokes in the
choreographer's imagination. It was
named one of the LA Times top
performances of 20 13, a testament to
its artistic merit and impact.
Danced by a large ensemble to a stunning
score by decorated British composer
Joby Talbot, Chamber is a primal, ritualistic
work that seeks to balance order and
chaos, ultimately underlining the duality
between the collective and the individual.
' SWAY,' a North American premiere for
seven dancers, joined Ballet BC's repertoire
at FOR EVER. This piece, which invokes the
lyrical movement language Walerski has
become known for, is a unique ode to
movement and its ability to communicate
without words, offering a different
experience from the other works in the
program.
The evening concluded with a long-awaited
world premiere, Walerski's sixth with the
company and his second new creation
since becoming Artistic Director. This
captivating piece, set to music by Bach
and featuring the entire company of 20
dancers, reinforcing Walerski's continued
innovation and artistic vision.

HUMMER
LUXURY
EV
SUV
123
GM C | Dueck GM on M arine | Vancouver, BC
HGM C's electric supertruck lineup
expands with the addition of the 20 24
HUM M ER EV SUV, loaded with smart,
purposeful technology.
"GMC's HUMMER EV SUV offers an
exceptional balance of on-road
performance and off-road capability,
enhanced by a unique structure that
allows for our signature open-air
experience," said Al Oppenheiser,
HUMMER EV chief engineer. "New
features debuting on the SUV reinforce
its role as a tactical tool in almost any
situation."
125
New technologies include trail mapping
available via the redesigned myGM C
app, and a newly available Pow er Station
generator that enables customers to utilize
up to 3 kilowatts of power from the
vehicle, turning the HUMMER EV SUV into a
power source on the trail or a backup
generator. These features are designed to
empower you, giving you the freedom to
explore without limits.
The interdependent body/ battery
structure enables the Infinity Roof on the
EV pickup as well as the SUV. Expected
best-in-class off-road proportions help
make the new SUV even more
maneuverable while taking advantage of
the HUMMER EV's signature features, such
as CrabWalk, Extract M ode, and more.
These safety features are designed to
keep you secure, no matter the terrain.
M ASTER OF M AN EUVERABILITY
With a nearly 9- inch shorter w heelbase
than the HUMMER EV Pickup, the all-new
HUMMER EV SUV offers even greater
maneuverability, with expected
best- in- class off- road proportions and a
turning circle of only 35.4 feet (10 .8
meters) with 4 Wheel Steer ? smaller than
a M ustang M ach- E.
Without the constraints of a conventional
propulsion system and traditional drive
axles, the unique ' Ultium drive system'
provides tremendous power and control to
each wheel.
127
This innovative system can channel
power to a single wheel, keeping the
vehicle moving in some of the most
challenging driving conditions and
terrain ? including 13 inches of
suspension travel, climbing 60
percent grades (forward and reverse),
scaling 18- inch verticals and fording
water more than two feet deep.
Standard features on 2X, 3X, and
Edition 1 models include a 4-Wheel
Steering with CrabWalk, which allows
diagonal-drive functionality, Adaptive
Air Suspension with Extract Mode, and
22-inch wheels with 35-inch-OD
Goodyear all-terrain tires. e4WD with
torque vectoring is also standard on
3X and Edition 1.
IM M ERSIVE EXPERIEN CE
The 20 24 HUMMER EV SUV offers a
multi-sensory, immersive experience
that puts drivers in the middle of every
moment.
The user experience team worked with
Perception, a creative agency best
known for their science fiction thinking
and technology design work within the
M arvel Universe, to create a
cinematic in-cabin experience that
engages the senses.
Special features such as ' Watts To
Freedom' bring unique multi-sensory,
interactive experiences.
129
This feature allows you to unleash the full
power of the HUMMER EV SUV, with
distinctive sound via the premium Bose
audio system, feel through the haptic
driver' s seat, and sight with custom
screen displays showing the special
performance mode is armed and ready.
The user experience is customizable
through M y M ode, allowing the driver to
tailor their favourite features, including
steering, suspension, sound and
acceleration, for a genuinely personal
interface that celebrates every drive.
This vehicle's remarkable driving
capabilities blend with these engaging
technologies and a carefully crafted
user experience, creating a sense of
intensity and drama for drivers and
passengers. In contrast, features such as
the standard Infinity Roof and modular
Sky Panels create an open experience,
allowing customers to enjoy nearly silent
movement during outdoor adventures.
The HUMMER EV was also designed as a
two- row SUV with a shorter wheelbase
to help optimize its off-road
maneuverability while providing
secure rear storage. Its instantly
recognizable proportions convey the
characteristically aggressive stance.
131
"Designing the Pickup and SUV
simultaneously helped us give each their
own unique features to maximize utility,"
said Phil Zak, HUMMER EV design
executive director. "The SUV's tight
proportions create a distinct profile and
spacious cargo area, while maintaining a
roomy and architecturally-inspired
cabin."
The SUV's rear design is unique and
incorporates a standard full-size spare
tire mounted to a pow er sw ing- out
tailgate. Using one of three button
options, the swing gate automatically
opens like a vault? even wider than the
vehicle itself. The extra width allows for
an unimpeded 48-inch opening to make
loading gear and supplies easier. The
spare tire mount also creatively houses a
rear- facing camera to assist with reverse
maneuvers and trailer alignment.
SUPER STRON G & SUPER- FAST
As with the HUMMER EV Pickup, the new
SUV is built on a unique, interdependent
body/ battery structure that serves two
crucial functions: It reinforces the overall
structure for exceptional rigidity while
protecting the double-stacked Ultium
battery pack.
"The HUMMER EV's body protects the
battery while the battery supports the
structure," said Oppenheiser. "That means
the battery pack itself is a structural
element, which enables a truly open-air
experience and a rare combination of
extreme off-road capability and smooth
on-road performance in a body-frame
integral platform."
With GM's unique ability to stack long
pouch cells vertically or horizontally, the
HUMMER EV SUV can pack its power in a
relatively small space: the available
20 - module, double-stacked battery
pack, consisting of two layers of 10
modules. It can deliver up to 830
horsepow er and up to 11,50 0 lb- ft of
torque and is capable of enabling
0 - 60 mph in approximately 3.5 seconds.
N EW TRAIL M APPIN G
The HUMMER EV SUV is loaded with
smart, purposeful technology designed to
enhance on- and off- road excursions.
One of the latest features is an updated
myGM C mobile phone app, redesigned
with an all-new home screen and
enhanced features, including new
off-road trail mapping.
Tailored for HUMMER EV drivers, it
not only helps plan and navigate
off-road driving adventures, it
incorporates charging locations and their
distances from off-road locations and
provides real-time energy consumption
with community-based energy forecast.
Routes and plans can be downloaded
from the app on the driver's phone and
projected on the vehicle's infotainment
screen for more straightforward,
at-a-glance navigation while driving.
133
Standard HUM M ER EV SUV technologies
include:
- Large, 13.4-inch diagonal
infotainment screen and 12.3-inch
diagonal driver information centre,
including trail mapping projection
from the myGMC app.
- The in-vehicle Energy App monitors
energy use, sets up charging
schedules, controls battery
temperature conditioning, and
more right from the infotainment
screen.
- Digital Key allows owners to use
their smartphone as the key fob for
their HUMMER EV. The technology
detects the owner's phone and
location in proximity to the vehicle,
enabling several passive
operations such as approach
lighting, entry unlock and vehicle
operation.
- HD Surround Vision offers up to 14
camera views, and
UltraVision offers up to 17 camera
views.
- Off-road widgets offer a myriad of
information related to selectable
capabilities and performance
readouts in off-road driving
scenarios? everything from the
ride height and eLocker
engagement to compass headings,
pitch/ roll status, and more.
Additionally, all HUMMER EV models
feature the enhanced version of
Super Cruise. An available
driver-assistance technology offering
hands-free driving on more than
322,0 0 0 km of enabled roads.
It includes a new automatic
lane-changing feature, where the system
can determine when a lane change is
optimal and initiate the maneuver while
following signalling protocols.
The HUMMER EV SUV also incorporates
a great degree of customer
customization through available buttons
that can be used for several accessory
features, and nearly 20 0 accessories
will be available from participating
GMC dealers.
