EDITOR-IN-CHIEF | Publisher's M essage
Greetings and a warm welcome! It is with
great pleasure that we present Issue # 23,
the first edition of 20 24 of the Folio.YVR
Luxury Lifestyle M agazine. As we enter our
sixth year of celebrating Vancouver and the
unique community that calls this city home,
we are excited to bring you an array of
captivating stories and a bounty of
eye-candy images that will leave you
spellbound.
In 20 18, we were privileged to have spent an
enchanting afternoon with Singapore-born
and Paris-based haute couturier Andrew Gn
at Leisure Center during a trunk show for the
city's most sophisticated taste-makers. Over
the years, Gn's garments' intricate
embroidery and elegance captured the
hearts of women of elegant worldwide.
When Gn announced his retirement this past
December, the news sent shockwaves
throughout high society and the fashion
industry. In this issue, we pay homage to
Andrew Gn's journey through a story by
contributor, Kate Pickering, featuring his
glorious creations throughout.
In the Fashion section, we introduce
you to the newest tenant in Vancouver's
' Luxury Zone,' the infamous Balenciaga,
along with the relaunch of Louis Vuitton in
the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.
We also take you on a weekend 'away' with
The DOUGLAS Autograph, where guests can
indulge in cocktails and culinary delights at
D/ 6 Lounge and Honey Salt, refresh at
Spa by JW, and blow off some steam while
getting lucky at the casino.
In the Show case Pianos Presents Series,
M anuel Bernaschek has chosen to spotlight
rising Clean-Pop sensation M iist who splits
her time recording in California, with family
in the San Juan Islands, and in Vancouver.
Our Features include an in-depth look at the
life and work of M aestro Ken Hsieh, also
affectionately known as ' Conductor Ken' of
the Vancouver M etropolitan Orchestra, as
well as profiles of Mother-Son real estate
duo Sid Koshul and Jacqueline Adler, and
Paolo Fazioli, the creator of almost three
dozen Fazioli pianos gracing luxury hotels,
office towers, and private homes in the city.
The Gallery Jones continues to captivate
art lovers with their curations. This past May
(Issue # 18 Spring 20 23), Lyle XOX
mesmerized patrons with his large-scale
facial assemblage photographs, and now
Brian How ell's mind-bending ' Chainsaw
Rorschach Test' challenges our perception.
Before closing this issue, we take a spin in
the West Coast's two hottest EVs - the
Porsche Taycan 4S, along with taste-maker
and award-winning interior designer
Aleem Kassam, and the M ercedes- Benz
EQS. Electric lovers can now be
climate-friendly and stylish without
sacrificing any of the power.
Thank you for joining us on this luxury journey,
please enjoy, and share with your friends!

A LEGACY IS BORN
In 20 0 3, with a desire to build a much
needed al cultural resource for the city,
the Vancouver M etropolitan Orchestra
was founded by Ken.
The VMO is dedicated to outstanding
young musicians' artistic, personal and
professional development, creating
opportunities for talented young musicians
to perform with the mentorship of seasoned
professionals, in front of live audiences.
With its first concert that summer at the
Shaughnessy Heights United Church,
a packed audience was enthralled by
16 orchestral members who performed
string orchestral works by Vivaldi, Bach,
and Tchaikovsky.
015
Since then, the orchestra has grown
exponentially, performing works from
the Baroque and classical periods
and large-scale works from the
Romantic and contemporary periods.
Before becoming an orchestra
under the American Federation of
M usicians/ Vancouver M usicians'
Association (20 0 9), the orchestra
performed up to an astounding
12 concerts per season!
WORDS FROM THE M AESTRO
"The last few years or so have been
quite an adventure! I had the great
pleasure of conducting Boston Ballet
and Tokyo Ballet, where I have come to
enjoy working with these professional,
talented dancers!
"Tying in with my debut with the Sendai
Philharmonic Orchestra through
Beethoven Symphony No. 9, I hosted
two documentary programs for the
Japan N ational Tourism Organization
featured on CTV.
"This opportunity included incredible
experiences in Okinaw a, Ishigaki,
Taketomi, N ago and N aha. I was able
to reconnect with Karate - my
childhood passion, having reached
brown belt level - so many years ago.
Hosting the program allowed me to
learn the history of Karate and its
origin in Okinawa and to practice and
renew my interest in this martial art.
Guiding me along the way was
Akihito Yagi, who is the youngest and
highest 9th- degree black belt and
who became one of my most incredible
friends and mentors.
"Aside from conducting great
professional orchestras in Japan,
one of my fun rewards is conducting
the Honour Orchestra in Japan. It
consists of high-level young students
who perform so beautifully I had chills
up my spine!
"Through my travels, especially in
China, I am amazed at how far
China has come regarding music
performance. The professional
orchestras in Suzhou, Shanghai, and
Chengdu are all performing very well,
and some at an extremely high level.
"Although the pandemic was a trying
time for all of us, I kept myself busy
and mentally fulfilled by creating
many recording projects for the VMO.
Even without a live audience, these
undertakings worked to keep morale
of the musicians (and myself) high!
"The first five to six months of the
pandemic allowed me to slow down,
and it became a welcome to rest time
and find clarity for my future
undertakings."
017
"In September 20 21, at the
Orpheum Theatre, the VMO
became one of the first orchestras
to give a live performance to a live
audience. Hope and spirits were
high, but I must admit, seeing so
many musicians leave their careers
to find other work made me sad.
"We are a couple of years out from
those days, and I am slowly
returning to Japan and China to
conduct, and hopefully, Europe
very soon! Outside of music, I am
happy to get back to being
involved with various charities to
give back to the community.
"I am still very honoured and
humbled to have had the
opportunity to co-chair the
LIVERight Gala 20 19 for the
Canadian Liver Foundation. This
event was recording breaking in
its fundraising and set the stage
for the following galas to excel.
"As I enter the 21st season with
the VMO, I am proud that we can
present and showcase to our
beautiful city acclaimed soloists
like David Fung, Sunny Zhang, and
the incredible " Cateen" Sumino
Hayato, who is coming in the
spring to perform with us.
"Cateen is a fantastic, brilliant
pianist who used the YouTube
platform to gain over 1.5 million
follow ers and is now recognized
by Forbes M agazine as one of the
' Top 30 Under 30 ' and an Apple
M usic global ambassador. I am
looking forward to working with
him and also learning from him.
"For the M arco Polo development
project by the award-winning
Gryphon Development, I wrote
and recorded a composition with
the fantastic Evergreen Symphony
Orchestra in Taipei, Taiw an. What
an experience with two significant
entities that bring such passion to
their respective fields!
"As I move into 20 24, I am happy
to share that new and exciting
projects and collaborations are
underway, and I cannot wait to
share them with everyone. I want to
invite everyone to learn more
about the VMO, to help us grow,
and, of course, buy tickets for this
year's season!"

SID + JA CQUELINE REA L ESTA TE | Vancouver, BC
s +J
The Sid + Jacqueline Real
Estate Group is a
Vancouver-based team of
award-winning real estate
agents serving downtown
Vancouver, N orth Vancouver,
West Vancouver, and other
areas throughout Greater
Vancouver.
Founded by the mother-son
duo of Jacqueline Adler and
Sid Koshul, this real estate
group is about so much more
than just buying and selling
homes.
"We are passionate about
real estate and providing our
clients with the best
experience we can as we
guide them through the
buying and selling process.
We are client-focused, and
every transaction matters to
us because it is important to
our clients," shares Jacqueline.
Vancouver is a perfect home
base for the duo, as luxury
buyers are attracted to our
West Coast city for many of
the same reasons that it
consistently ranks on "the best
places in the world to live"
lists - the natural beauty,
lifestyle, proximity to nature
and outdoor activities,
relatively stable economy,
and welcoming community.
FROM SOLO AGEN T TO
FORM IN G A TEAM
Jacqueline is an
award-winning real estate
agent, and designated as a
Certified Luxury Home
M arketing Specialist and
Guild M ember of the
Institute for Luxury Home
M arketing . She is a M aster
M edallion Club M ember
(having been ranked in the
Top 10 % of Realtors® in
Greater Vancouver for the
last six years) and a recipient
of the M asters Level & Top
Producer Sales Aw ards from
Oakw yn Realty. She also is
included in Property Spark's
list of the ' Top 10 0 British
Columbia Real Estate Agents
on Social M edia.'
In 20 22, Jacqueline was
chosen by their brokerage
Oakwyn Realty as the
recipient of the Oakw ynite of
the Year Aw ard, given to the
agent who best represents the
core values of Oakwyn Realty,
which include putting people
first, creating a community,
and leading by example.
"Referrals and repeat
business came early for me
due to clients appreciating
my service level.
023
"Because of their support, I achieved
Medallion Club membership in my first full
year (my first goal) and have achieved it
every year since."
"It was my son Sid who pointed out that
being a Real Estate Agent presented the
perfect opportunity for me to combine my
skills and passion. It also ignited my
competitive nature (I compete with myself),
so early on, I decided to set goals that
seemed unobtainable then but that I have
since learned were within grasp."
"The first several years of being a solo agent
required very long hours and dedication - to
the point where it was almost the singular
focus of my life. Things changed when I hired
an assistant, and then they really changed
when my son Sid, who was a Real Estate
Lawyer at the time, left his law career to
become a Realtor."
The pivotal moment for the duo was when
they decided to team up and launch the
Sid + Jacqueline Real Estate Group. The
catalyst for this moment occurred after
they were involved in a record- breaking
sale - the highest-priced condo sale in
Vancouver in almost a decade - a Fairmont
Pacific Rim Penthouse with a sale price of
$19,30 0 ,0 0 0 .
FROM LAWYER TO AGEN T
As a former Real Estate Lawyer, Sid
understands the importance of protecting
his clients' best interests, keeping them
fully informed, and advocating strongly on
their behalf.
After obtaining his Law degree,
Sid articled in West Vancouver's Ambleside
Village before working at various law firms
in Vancouver's Financial District and
Gastow n neighbourhoods, where he
developed a successful practice focused on
residential real estate and conveyancing
matters.
Throughout his time as a 'go-to' Real Estate
Lawyer that many of BC's top Realtors and
Mortgage Broker's relied on for advice and
who trusted Sid to ensure their clients were
taken care of, Sid handled hundreds of
closings of both residential purchases and
sales each year.
This experience has allowed Sid to bring a
unique perspective to his role as a Real
Estate Agent, along with professionalism,
high attention to detail, exceptional
communication, dispute resolution, and
organizational skills.
Now as a Real Estate Agent, Sid has
received numerous awards, including the
M edallion Club Aw ard (for ranking within
the Top 10 % of Realtors® in Greater
Vancouver for the last two years) and the
Oakw yn Realty Top Producer Sales Aw ard
in 20 23. Sid is also included in Property
Spark' s list of the ' Top 10 0 British
Columbia Real Estate Agents on Social
M edia.'
025
THE REWARDS OF GIVIN G BACK
Giving back and being involved in their
community is very important to both Sid and
Jacqueline, which motivates them and allows them
to build strong connections with people from all
walks of life.
One of the most rewarding experiences that Sid
and Jacqueline have been involved in is the
formation of a ' Circle of Hope' in support of
Rainbow Refugee, which raised over $30 ,0 0 0 to
support bringing a refugee, originally from Iran
and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, to
Vancouver.
Sid is also a member of the Dr. Peter AIDS
Foundation' s Pride Kickoff Committee, which
is responsible for throwing a highly successful
annual fundraiser in support of the Dr. Peter
Centre and a Committee M ember for
Ballet BC' s M omentum Gala.
GROWIN G TOGETHER
"We are proud that in less than a year after
forming the Sid + Jacqueline Real Estate Group,
our team is ranked among the Top 10 teams at our
brokerage, and we want to build on that through
ongoing professional development and training
that helps us provide top quality services to our
clients and stay ahead of market trends and
changing regulations.
"We are always seeking to improve our
client experience and make buying or selling
a property enjoyable and smooth for our
clients. We may also add one more team member
this year."
The team is also excited to continue building
relationships with other Realtors in luxury markets
across the continent to ensure that clients who are
looking to sell or buy in other markets can work
with Real Estate Agents familiar to them so that
they experience the same level of professionalism
expected from Sid and Jacqueline's team.
Their network spans across Canada and
throughout North America, in markets that
include Whistler, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary,
N ew York, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and
beyond. Another key benefit of such a network is
that it allows them to promote listings to a vast
network of agents who work with buyers in the
luxury market, expanding their marketing reach
beyond BC.
AN IN CLUSIVE M ISSION
When asked about the importance of community,
Jacqueline responded, "We feel fortunate to work
in an industry that allows us to make deep
connections in our community and to support
organizations that improve the lives of so many.
Whether it was sponsoring events such as Art
Rapture' s ' The Throw back' and an Evening in
Damascus in support of Rainbow Refugee or
supporting charitable or community events we
love such as the Dr. Peter Centre Life Commitment
Gala and Pride Cocktail Kickoff, the Momentum
Gala for Ballet BC, among others, we value
sharing time with many wonderful people while
celebrating the efforts of those who work to
improve the community we live in. Not only does
this motivate us to work harder, but it also rewards
us through the friendships we enjoy with people
who share our values."

PAOLO
FAZI OLI
029
Amidst the excited conversation at
a private event at Westbank' s
Oakridge Gallery, Paolo Fazioli
slowly makes his way through the
crowd of excited onlookers, a glass
of Champagne in his hand. He
pauses for photographs, handshakes
and embraces. He is bespectacled,
smartly dressed, and pulls up a stool
at the side of the room - a concert
on one of his namesake Fazioli
pianos is about to begin.
The annual trip to Vancouver has
become a precursor for a
must-attend event for the city's arts
and culture patrons, collectors of
Fazioli pianos, and young and
professional pianists alike seeking
acknowledgment from the man who
continues to create beautiful works
of art that are world-renowned.
A LEGACY OF SOUN D
As the founder of Fazioli Pianoforti,
his work not only includes designing
what is well known to be the world's
finest concert pianos but also
testing each one before it is
permitted to leave the factory.
Fazioli's eponymous company
started from a desire to be greater
than world-class.
In most industries, this is a lofty goal,
especially in the world of high-end
pianos, where existing piano makers
had a hundred-year head start, it
must have seemed near impossible.
As one of the top dealers in Fazioli
pianos, M anuel Bernaschek of
Show case Pianos says he was
drawn to the "special aura that
surrounded the Fazioli piano."
FA ZIOLI PIA NOFORTI | M ilano, ItalyP F
031
He knew from the beginning that "there
was something legendary about what
Mr. Fazioli was doing ? there was
something perfect about his story of a
pianist turned engineer that wants to enter
the piano world at the very top. If anyone
could pull this off, it would be someone
who shared the same heritage as
Cristofori and Stradivari ? someone from
the North of Italy with an inborn drive to
reach perfection. Paolo Fazioli is exactly
that man."
ACCESSIBILITY FOR AFICION ADOS
With many Fazioli pianos envisioned,
designed, and made to order, piano
aficionados do not realize they may have
crossed paths with one of these gorgeous
instruments. There are five Fazioli in public
areas in the city - Telus Garden, Fairmont
Pacific Rim, Shangri- La Hotel, Deloitte
Summit, and Sheraton Wall Centre.
The most accessible is in the open and airy
Lobby Lounge at the Fairmont Pacific Rim,
which attracts international visitors and
locals who enjoy signature cocktails and
bites by the fireplace. In this comfortable
and sophisticated space, the bold white
Origami piano (exterior designed by
Joseph Wu), with intricate walnut inlay
under the lid and the immediately
recognizable FAZIOLI in gold on the side, is
always the centre of attention.
The warm-tone natural Telus Garden piano
is made from Douglas Fir, and the V-shape
legs were designed to reflect the building's
repeating 'V' feature. It rests next to an
indoor coy pond.
A black lacquer Fazioli at the luxurious
Shangri-La Hotel is the colour of dark, rich
chocolate with a caramel tone to
complement the hotel's lush interiors.
The Butterfly piano was unveiled amid
great fanfare as the centrepiece of
Westbank Corporation's ' Fight for Beauty'
exhibit. It was designed by the iconic
Bing Thom and currently resides in
Westbank's ' Alberni' building, which
Kengo Kuma designed. Soon it will be
moved to the private lobby of the Butterfly
Building on Nelson Street.
The Butterfly is the first piano the company
has crafted out of beech wood, reinforced
by steel, and heavily enamelled. Paolo
explained that "beech wood can be
carved, warped, and bent" but is not
strong enough to hold the piano's guts
without the steel.
The Cloud is a Fazioli M odel F228
semi-concert grand piano in black enamel
enveloped in 450 mirrors that are mounted
on steel rods representing the large square
panels of the Deloitte Summit building.
033
FOREVER M ADE IN ITALY
As a young man in Rome, Fazioli
studied engineering first before
completing a master's degree in
piano composition.
Then, using the skills gained from his
family's experience in furniture
production, he began designing
piano prototypes before founding
Fazioli Pianoforti in 1981 and
claiming an underused family factory
space in Sacile, a town 60 km's
northwest of Venice in the
Friuli- Venezia Giulia region.
Today, the 50 - employee factory
(which has its concert hall for testing
newly completed units) produces
approximately 150 pianos a year.
According to Fazioli, there is little
desire to expand production beyond
this number.
"Maybe more is not better," he
explains. "If you want to maintain
quality, you must maintain limited
production. You must have control
over every piece you are producing."
Fazioli's key differentiator is his
anti- industrialist view of piano
production. Each piano is treated as
an individual, not part of a line, and
is subject to continuous
experimentation and research by
experts in the fields of wood material
science, engineering, and design.
The average timeline for a piano to
be completed is about two years.
With ambitious projects on the
horizon, Fazioli tempers his
excitement with thoughts of where he
is meant to be at his factory in
Sacile.
"In the future, my plan is to spend
more time at home," he says. He cites
the department for research and
development at the factory, which
works in collaboration with a
university in Milan, as a source of
excitement and growth for the
company.
"We are always improving the sound
of our piano and the quality of the
instrument."
It seems that as much as it is adored
worldwide and played by legends
like Angela Hew itt, Herbie Hancock,
N ick Cave, and Chloe Flow er, there
will never really be the perfect
Fazioli piano. But this notion of
'perfection' is one that Fazioli himself
does not care for or believe, as every
piano comes off the line more
magnificent than the last.

PRESENTS MI I ST
037
M IIST THE SINGER | Stefano Ricci | Vancouver
Everyone has dreams, and Miist is no
different. When she was young, she dreamed
of meeting someone to share her life with,
to be a w ife, mother, and a source of
inspiration to those around her. She has
always believed, "Each new day brings new
challenges and opportunities; however, it is
up to us to decide which one of those each
day will become."
At 33 years old, having achieved all those,
Miist was enjoying the day with a friend
when a question about dreams turned into a
dare - her friend challenged her to write a
song. 'Oh no, I couldn't do that!' she
exclaimed, but her friend pressed. She knew
Miist had stories in her that needed to be
told and that music would be the path to
sharing them with the world.
MWith a bit of coaxing, Miist went along with
her friend's request, took the challenge, and
gave in to the dare. To humour her would
bring her joy, even if it meant failing
dramatically.
A CHILDHOOD OF LON ELIN ESS
Miist was not a child music prodigy nor a
writer; in fact, she had been, before
marriage, a bookkeeper for a clothing
retailer. She did not live glamorously, nor did
she want for much. But on the day of her
friend's dare, she felt emotion rise within
her, and by the end of the day, she had
composed three songs! It was like the door
of her heart had opened, and the stories
began spilling out.
039
"We all have room to grow. I feel there is a lot
to learn about myself to understand why I am
now and where I want to be," shares Miist as she
grows each day as a songwriter and singer.
From a tender age, Miist had hardships and
sometimes struggled to understand why some
people in her life were happy, but others seemed
to live under a cloud, unsure how to grow and
thrive.
It is painful for her to share, but when asked for
the story of ' She,' Miist says, "I've had a difficult
relationship with my mother since I was five years
old. It was then both my parents dropped me off
at a boarding school. I was a teenager by the
time my mom and I would again spend any
significant time together, and I was in my 20 s
before the relationship started to mend. I went
through a life- threatening health scare, and
she was the only one who stood firmly by my side.
We are now closer than we have ever been. I
wrote the song 'She' for her and all mothers."
AT TARPAN STUDIOS
With storytelling at the centre of her music
and vocally talented in multiple genres, Miist has
now written dozens of songs, including many with
her producer, N arada M ichael Walden. At
Tarpan Studios in M arin County, California,
where Miist and her family have a home, the
sessions are about two creatives bonding and
blending styles.
Known as 'Narada,' he is not only producing
Miist's upcoming ' The Songs from the Living
Room' album but has also actively co-written
with her.
Narada shares, when asked why he took on
producing Miist with a completely unknown
singer/ songwriter, "Miist is really special in that
she prepares beautifully for the sessions. She will
learn her music, note for note, what she wants to
record. Of course, we can always be
spontaneous when we want to make the actual
recordings.
"The fact that she comes prepared reminds me
of Aretha Franklin. Aretha was really
professional, so much so that there wasn't even a
lyric on the music stand ? it was all memorized ?
what she wanted to give. Miist is the same kind
of feeling. Everything she knows, everything is
prepared, so we can just have fun with recording
it, trying a few things that we want to do, and
what she knows in her heart. This is what I am
most appreciative about Miist."
Narada comes with a pedigree that includes
being named one of Billboard M agazine' s
Top 10 All- Time Producers in 20 23 and is a
Grammy & Emmy Winning Producer,
M usician, and Recording Artist producing
hits for artists as diverse as M ariah Carey,
Barbara Streisand, George M ichael,
Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, and Tom Jones,
and has a hit music career that spans decades.
The abundance of her songwriting paired with
Narada's trademark foot-thumping
rhythms? found in his 57 # 1 Hits? is a potent
mix that is pushing Miist's songs higher on the
FM and College radio charts and climbing
over 2M streams on the world's top platforms
in early 20 24.
041
"Miist has in her songwriting a kind of classic
approach which I appreciate. She uses a lot
of classic chord changes, melody, and not
having to be too limited, so I like that we can
kind of stretch out and use the colours of our
palettes in Miist's music. Not saying that we
can't be super current because we are but
we can also do beautiful things that we don't
often hear or feel. She is not afraid to
expose her vulnerability and innocence in
her music. We use the word 'purity' as she is
not afraid to use the things that we spoke
about and sing about in the 1960 s, for
example. This is what is beautiful about
Miist's music," expressed Narada.
DESERVIN G OF LOVE
Miist writes and performs her songs and
music videos in English and Mandarin to add
to her international appeal. Miist is reaching
an audience of all ages through her music,
Clean- Pop. From the young girl trying to
connect with her mother, the young woman
seeking love in times of uncertainty, and all
those struggling with finding their voice,
confidence, and who they are deep inside.
Her lyrics are expressive, genuine, and full
of emotion. The theme of love is a common
thread that ties the songs together. Whether
it is seeking love, losing love, or sharing love,
Miist says, "Understanding we all deserve
love is the key to making true connections. I
didn't use to believe I deserved to be loved,
so I found myself subconsciously engaging in
so many destructive actions to prove to
myself that I actually deserved love.
But now I finally feel I deserve to be loved,
and I want to be loved. This journey has also
resulted in me finally loving myself as well.
Something I have never felt before."
Narada has expressed that Miist is one of
the rarest gems in the industry, a singer and
songwriter who is a beautiful soul who lights
up the world around her.
"When creating beauty in your life, remember
that true beauty comes from inside. I know
we hear that so many times. But a beautiful
life is based on happiness ? which comes
from inside. It is not what it just looks like to
other people. The external things that people
like to show on Social Media are often not so
beautiful for those that are actually living it,"
explains Miist. As a mother to a young
daughter, she knows she must be vigilant
and protective of her and all children.
THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT
With a personal philosophy of living life with
thankfulness, Miist shares, "View the world
with open eyes, and you will see there is a lot
more to love and enjoy from people, places,
culture and food. I truly believe that one day
all people can and will learn to live in
peace. I know that sounds like a dream and
hope that pushes us to change ourselves and
the world around us."
During a private and intimate performance
at Vancouver's Stefano Ricci, Miist brought
guests to tears as she performed 'She' on the
gorgeous California Walnut Fazioli F212 in
Pyramid M ahogany.
Afterwards, Miist shared, "When I dream of my life,
I feel I'm unsure how to say this because it sounds
funny, but I love my life. I'm living a life that I never
thought I would. And I don't mean just the music. I'm
surrounded by a wonderful family who support and
love this new part of me. It is the everyday life that I
live that brings me the most joy."
Miist promises to continue to create and inspire
those who take solace in her w ords, are inspired by
her music, and find happiness in the positive
universality of her message.

HOWELL
GALLERY
JONES
GALLERY
JONES
079
GA LLERY JONES | 258 East 1st A venue
BA Vancouver-based photographer
best known for creating documentary
photographs rooted in activism,
Brian How ell is exhibiting his latest works
at Gallery Jones in the Armoury District.
As a photographer who creates
documentary works rooted in activism,
Howell is one of the rare residents who
was born within city limits.
Immediately, guests are drawn to the
pieces in ' Chainsaw Rorschach Test'
exhibition as they appear to be a
kaleidoscope of hard-edged elements that
immediately bring incredible mechanical
insects frozen in blackness to mind.
Upon closer contemplation, the viewers
realize that the elements are, in fact,
well-worn chainsaw assemblages.
"The feedback on 'Chainsaw Rorschach
Test' has been quite inspiring," shares
Howell. "Referring to them as Rorschach
tests opened a number of conversations
about how each individual was perceiving
the pieces.
"Some saw insects; others saw masks, and
others saw them very literally. One
gentleman was taken aback by one of the
saws that he hadn't seen since childhood in
Pakistan. For some, it wasn't immediately
obvious that the pieces were made from
vintage chain saws."
In these latest works, Howell has dismantled
and repurposed a familiar laden object to
create a duality of perception, the cursory
illusion and then the latent rational reading.
081
The powerful presented images, robotic by
design, effectively form a visual bond with the
viewer and addresses our thorny relationship with
technology and the ideology of progress. The
portable chainsaw, a Canadian invention,
entered BC's forest in 1937, reshaping the industry
and west coast forever.
Tree fallage dramatically increased twentyfold
by 1939, making forestry the province's leading
and most profitable industry.
"The chainsaw, a symbol of human industry and
progress, takes on a paradoxical role as both
creator and destroyer. By using this powerful tool,
I aim to highlight the dichotomy between the
allure of technological advancement and its
ecological consequences.
"The vintage chainsaw evokes a sense of
nostalgia, prompting viewers to reflect on the
historical roots of our current environmental
predicament. The Rorschach Test, traditionally
used for psychological interpretation, pushes
viewers to engage in subjective interpretation,
drawing connections between the chaotic
patterns of the chainsaw itself and the deliberate
symmetry of the Rorschach-like compositions.
"This subjective experience encourages
introspection and prompts questions about our
collective responsibility in shaping the future of
our planet.
"The use of vintage chainsaws serves as a
metaphorical bridge between the past and
present, highlighting the enduring impact of
industrialization on our environment. Each piece
is a visual echo, reverberating with the decisions
made in the past that continue to shape our
world today.
"Through this series, I hope to spark a
conversation about the urgent need for
sustainable practices and responsible
consumption. By confronting the viewer with
the stark reality of our environmental footprint,
I aspire to foster a heightened awareness of the
delicate balance between progress and
preservation."
Howell's early work includes ' One Ring Circus,'
a book of photographs depicting indie wrestling
in BC. The photographs were widely published
and exhibited, ultimately leading to editorial
collaborations with several publications, including
The Guardian Weekend magazine.
His second book, ' Fame Us,' is a series of
portraits of celebrity impersonators and was
referred to as the "eeriest photography book of
20 0 7" by The N ew York Times. These early
projects eventually paved the way for Howell's
acclaimed series, ' Shopping Carts' and
subsequent series, ' Burnt Forests.'

G N
In the ever-changing landscape of
the fashion industry, where trends
come and go like the changing
winds, a select few designers rise
above the momentary currents,
leaving a lasting mark on the fabric
of time.
Andrew Gn, the master of style from
Singapore, is a member of this rare
group of designers whose careers
are not just stories of clothes but
journeys through craftsmanship,
cultural appreciation (not
appropriation), and enduring
sophistication. As he gracefully exits
the active design stage of his
career, Gn's legacy emerges not as
a mere side note but as a defining
chapter in the history of luxury
fashion.
From Asia, Europe, and the
M iddle East to N orth America,
Gn's exquisite high-end,
ready-to-wear creations have
adorned powerful women in politics,
high society, and the entertainment
industry, such as Emma Stone,
Fan Bing Bing, M aggie Cheung,
Kareena Kapoor, Kit Chan,
Lady Gaga, Lily Collins,
Princess Alessandra of Hannover,
Queen Rania of Jordan,
and Yang M i.
Born into a tapestry of cultures with
roots embracing Chinese and
Japanese heritage, Gn's journey to
becoming a renowned fashion
maestro is a captivating exploration
of identity, tradition, and the
relentless pursuit of beauty.
089
From the vibrant city-state of Singapore,
where cultures converge like a symphony,
to the prestigious corridors of Central Saint
M artins in London and the creative
landscape of Domus Academy in M ilan,
Gn's path was destined for greatness.
His childhood, a blend of colours and
textures, laid the foundation for seamlessly
blending the opulence of Eastern aesthetics
with the finesse of Western design.
In 1996, the world witnessed the birth of the
Andrew Gn label, a manifestation of his
vision to redefine luxury fashion. The atelier
became a haven where fabrics whispered
tales of ancient traditions. Each creation
bore the imprints of a designer with a
keen eye for detail and a heart open to
cultural dialogues. Gn's designs became a
passport to a w orld where boundaries
blurred, and fashion became a universal
language of beauty.
Gn's signature style testifies to his ability to
bridge the gap between classical designs
and modernity. Intricate embroidery dances
on the canvas of his creations, drawing
inspiration from the delicate artistry of
Asian craftsmanship.
These embellishments find harmony with
contemporary silhouettes, creating timeless
yet avant- garde ensembles. Like chapters
in a cathartic novel, his collections unfold
narratives of a global citizen who speaks
the language of aesthetics fluently.
091
As the curtains gently fall on his active
design career, Gn stands not just as a
designer but as a custodian of elegance, a
curator of culture, and a mentor to those
w ho dare to dream within the realm of
haute couture. His legacy is a timeless
symphony resonating across ages, echoing
the sentiment that true elegance transcends
the temporal boundaries of trends.
Gn's designs are not mere garments but
artifacts of cultural fusion, each telling a
story of his passion for art and antiques.
His upbringing surrounded by art and
diverse cultural elements has become the
heartbeat of his creations.
From Chinese porcelain to the abstract
brilliance of Braque and the juxtaposition
of Utopian Robots with Baroque elements,
Gn's collections invite visitors to take a
journey through centuries encapsulated in
luxurious and exclusive materials.
Step into Gn's salon in Le M arais and enter
a world curated by a true collector.
Eclectic 19th and early 20 th- century
objects gathered over the years adorn the
space. Lacquered panelling inspired by
Whistler' s Peacock Room, mural paintings
depicting heavenly scenes by Iranian artist
Roshanak Varasteh, and imposing Venetian
glass chandeliers? all meticulously chosen
to create an ambiance that mirrors Gn's
aesthetic sensibilities.
093
To discuss Gn's legacy without acknowledging
his steadfast commitment to promoting
diversity and inclusivity in the fashion
industry would be an oversight.
Before inclusivity became a rallying cry in the
fashion world, Gn was a trailblazer,
championing models of various ethnicities,
sizes, and backgrounds.
His runway shows celebrated beauty in all
forms, challenging the industry's conventional
standards and pushing for a more inclusive
representation of elegance.
Moving forward, Gn unveils plans that
continue his rich legacy. A retrospective
exhibition tour in the US, starting at the
Peabody Essex M useum in Salem, with an
opening gala planned for autumn next year,
will showcase the evolution of his artistry.
Simultaneously, renovating his newly acquired
Georgian M ansion in Dublin adds another
dimension to his creative pursuits.
Gn's commitment to passing on the torch of
craftsmanship and creativity remains
unwavering.
095
097
As he contemplates working on his Art
Foundation and cataloging his vast collection of
art, these endeavours reflect not just retirement
but a transition? an evolution of Andrew Gn,
the designer, into Andrew Gn, the custodian of
cultural heritage and mentor to future generations
of creative minds.
In the history of fashion, where designers are
often measured by the trends they set, Gn's story
is a testament to the enduring pow er of artistry
and a relentless pursuit of timeless elegance.
The chapters he has written in fabrics and threads
will continue to resonate, inspiring generations to
come as his legacy becomes an immortal imprint
on the canvas of fashion history.
His legacy embodies the idea that fashion,
when infused with passion and purpose,
transcends the temporal boundaries of trends,
becoming an eternal expression of beauty
and artistry.
Amid the challenges and triumphs of a career that
transcended boundaries and redefined haute
couture, Andrew Gn's story is a narrative woven
with threads of resilience, innovation, and a
profound love for the art of fashion.
As he bids farewell to the active design stage, his
influence remains palpable, not just in the
garments he created but in the conversations he
sparked about diversity, sustainability, and the
very essence of beauty itself. The symphony of
Andrew Gn's legacy will continue to resonate, an
everlasting melody in the grand tapestry of
fashion history.

BMoving onto a busy corner, the
notorious Balenciaga has replaced
German luxury brand Escada (and a
quaint coffee shop) and is the newest
boutique to include on your upcoming
visit to Vancouver's Luxury Zone.
Georgian designer and Vetements
founder Demna Gvasalia helms the
brand, which has experienced more
than its share of controversy. From
models traipsing through mud and rain
on the catwalk to high-profile
collaborations with cartoon
characters to fetish-outfitted teddy
bears, Balenciaga has taken hits and
bounced back stronger.
103
Fueling a fanbase of well-heeled
youth, Balenciaga quenches the thirst
of those who love irony, comfort, and
freedom. The garments are oversized,
relaxed, and reflect popular culture
while maintaining craftsmanship and
design levels synonymous with a
legacy luxury brand. In high fashion,
the house is at the forefront of social
commentary, constructs garments with
new and repurposed fabrics, and
strays away from traditional
tailoring, appealing to those seeking
constant change and new personal
expression.
Balenciaga is known for being a
leader in releasing new forms of
footwear, particularly the sock
sneaker, which attracted much
attention among influencers and
fashionistas alike. The house describes
the sneakers as "elevating the
sock-like construction of performance
athletic footwear alongside an
oversized articulated sole to establish
a sporty and "forward-looking"
profile."

For the purist, the Porsche Taycan 4S is
expressive, timeless, soulful, and electrified.
It thrills within fractions of a second with a
fluid yet sharp silhouette and dynamic
flyline. Launch control can be activated in
both Sport and Sport Plus modes, preparing
all systems for maximum acceleration and
delivering incredible power to the tarmac.
The Taycan is fitted with the Porsche Active
Aerodynamics System with active cool air
intakes and an adaptive, triple-level rear
spoiler for dynamic driving. At 56 mph, 99
mph and 124 mph, it transforms an electric
vehicle into a sports car with Porsche DNA.
Digital ones have entirely replaced
mechanical buttons, making the cockpit
cleaner. The innovative curved display is
always right in front of the driver, offering
state-of-the-art comfort for an electrifying
driving experience.
A YVR PERSPECTIVE
Recently, Vancouver's award-winning
interior designer and best dressed A-Lister
Aleem Kassam and his partner
Victor Kazakov enjoyed the Taycan 4S
Sport Saloon on a weekend getaway.
"We wanted to experience its full
capabilities and features, so we packed
our days with a couple of adventures out of
the city, one with friends and the other
ourselves. Getting to experience this
ultimate machine from the cockpit and
cabin, as a driver and passenger, there was
no bad seat in the Taycan!
"As avid car enthusiasts, we were amazed
by the power and performance packed
into this sleek car, especially the grit and
roar of the engine from an EV. Enjoy the
luxurious yet sporty interior, massaging
front seats, fantastic surround sound system,
endless technology, dual charging ports,
panoramic roof, and massive dual front
console screens for the driver and
passenger to ensure the ultimate driving
experience!"

AWARD- WIN N IN G & POPULAR
Porsche delivered almost 20 ,0 0 0 Taycan cars
to customers worldwide in 20 20 . Taycan
models account for 70 percent of all Porsche
models sold in N orw ay. The electric sports
car has already received almost 50
international awards, above all in its principal
markets of Germany, the USA, the UK, and
China.
SILHOUETTE IS PURE PORSCHE
With its clean, purist design, the Taycan
signals the beginning of a new era. At the
same time, it retains the unmistakable Porsche
design DNA. Its silhouette is defined by its
sporty roofline sloping downward to the rear.
The highly sculpted side sections are also
characteristic. The sleek cabin, the drawn-in
D-pillar and the pronounced shoulders of the
wings result in a sharply emphasized rear,
typical of the brand. Innovative elements,
such as the glass-look lettering for the
Porsche logo in the light bar, complement
these features.
VEGAN IN TERIOR OPTION
Classic design features have been
reinterpreted and brought into the digital
age? the wing-shaped upper and lower
sections of the dashboard stretch across the
car's entire width. The free-standing, curved
instrument cluster forms the highest point on
the dashboard.
This places a clear focus on the driver axis. A
central 10 .9- inch infotainment display and
an optional passenger display are combined
to form an integrated glass band in a
black-panel look. There is also the option for
a fully vegan interior, and the floor covering
uses the recycled fibre Econyl® , which is
made from, among other things, recycled
fishing nets.
HIGH CURREN T CHARGIN G
Taycan drivers can charge their vehicles at
home with up to 11 kW of alternating current
(AC) as standard. An onboard charger
delivering 22 kW is available as new optional
equipment. Taycan drivers benefit from the
sophisticated temperature management
strategy for the battery when on the road.
This allows the batteries to be charged with
higher currents (direct current, DC), speeding
up the process significantly. This means that, in
five minutes, the battery can be recharged
for up to 10 0 km (according to WLTP).
CARBON - N EUTRAL & SUSTAIN ABLE
From the start, it was clear to Porsche that
producing a fully electric car also had to be
carbon-neutral. The newly built factory for the
Taycan, situated in the Zuffenhausen district
of Stuttgart, has been designed to pursue the
vision of a factory with zero environmental
impact.
123
Both the materials used in the interior of
the electric sports car, some of which
consist of recycled materials and a
charging infrastructure using green
electricity, are particularly sustainable.
Every use of the Porsche Charging Service
is carbon-neutral. Porsche drivers can filter
available charging stations using the
" Green electricity" charging station filter.
Unlike electric vehicles based on cars
originally designed with combustion
engines, the Taycan was imagined from the
ground up as an electric vehicle. It is an
example of a ' purpose design approach,'
meaning that the battery was considered
the most important aspect of the vehicle
from the start of the development process
? which is why the Taycan was constructed
around this battery.
It meant that Porsche could explore the full
benefits of electromobility, like providing
two luggage compartments - front and
rear. These benefits are extended further
with the Taycan Cross Turismo and Taycan
Sport Turismo variants, with their larger
tailgates and enhanced luggage space.
AUTHEN TICITY OF SOUN D
More than any other type of vehicle, sports
cars and race cars can often be identified
just by the sound they make. Indeed, every
Porsche model has its own character and
particular 'voice.'
This presented a dilemma for Porsche
engineers when developing their first
all-electric vehicle.
In the case of the EU, USA and China, for
example, there are legal requirements for
manufacturers when it comes to the
acoustics of an electric vehicle for
pedestrian safety reasons. But in the case
of the Porsche engineers developing the
Taycan Sports Saloon, there was also the
additional desire for a Porsche to sound
amazing. They were determined that it
must be authentic and match the vehicle.
Of course, an electric vehicle runs far more
quietly than a gas- or diesel-powered car,
but it is not silent. You can hear the
contact its tires make with the road, for
example, and its transmission and drive
motors at work.
At the N ardò Technical Centre in Italy
and the soundproof laboratory of the
Porsche development centre in Weissach,
near Stuttgart , the company's acousticians
listened, tested and tweaked. They came
up with Porsche Electric Sport Sound, an
option for your Taycan, highlighting parts
of the drive that sound good and filtering
out unwanted sounds. It is a sound that gets
increasingly louder and more powerful the
more dynamic the driving. Emotional, say
the engineers, rather than obtrusive ? a
unique sound for these unique all-electric
sports cars.
125
RECORD BREAKIN G EV
The Porsche Taycan has broken several
electric vehicle records. Just before its
launch in 20 19, it became the fastest
four-door electric car on the
N ürburgring- N ordschleife at the
Nürburgring. A Taycan Turbo S Sports
Saloon covered the 20 .6 km section of the
Green Hell used for record attempts in a
highly rapid seven minutes and 42 seconds
? an average speed of 160 .52 km/ h.
Three years later, it became the fastest
series-produced electric car on the famed
German circuit, the scene of many great
high-octane exploits, when it posted a mark
of seven minutes and 33 seconds.
The Taycan records do not end there,
either. At the start of 20 22, a team of
drivers broke the record for the highest
altitude achieved by an all-electric
production car ? 4,842.967 metres - by
driving from one of the lowest points in the
USA, Badw ater Basin in Death Valley, to
one of its highest, the famous Pike' s Peak
in Colorado. The Taycan has also added
the fastest speed achieved by a vehicle
indoors when professional racing driver
Leh Keen reached a speed of 165.1 km/ h
in a Taycan Turbo S at the N ew Orleans
Convention Center in 20 21.
And if you thought electric cars could
not drift, then the Taycan proved that
assumption wrong in dramatic style
when Porsche Experience Center driver
Dennis Reter secured the Guinness world
record for the Taycan with the longest
continuous drift in an electric vehicle. He
held it for a jaw-dropping 55 continuous
minutes and 42 km' s on an irrigated track
at the Porsche Experience Centre (PEC) at
the Hockenheimring.
Many believe that the Taycan 4S is a
game-changing electric vehicle. In addition
to being a record-breaking,
award-winning, versatile all-electric sports
car that has helped change how we think
and feel about an EV, it is noteworthy that
the Taycan was designed as an EV from the
ground up. Gorgeous and with purpose!

M AYBACH DRIVIN G SOUN D
With the standard Burmester® 4D Surround
Sound System, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV
offers the ultimate sound experience. It features
the Dolby Atmos immersive audio experience,
which gives music more space, clarity and depth.
Dolby Atmos allows it to place discrete audio
elements or objects in a three-dimensional sound
field and adapt them to any playback
environment. Passengers can hear their music with
a clarity equal to the artist's original studio
composition.
The sound system includes 15 speakers: two front
bass speakers in the front footwell, one midrange
and one tweeter in each door, two 3D headliners,
two surround speakers in the luggage
compartment cover and a centre speaker in the
instrument panel. There are also two exciters in
each seat. The direct reproduction of
structure-borne noise in the seats makes the
listening experience four- dimensional.
Passengers in the frontand the rear can also
apply the 4D sound to the audio content of the
headphones. The sound can be individually
adjusted for each M BUX user profile.
EXCLUSIVE SCEN TIN G
An extraordinary and luxurious fragrance called
N o. 12 M OOD Ebony was specifically created for
the vehicle. It does not aim to please but to
seduce: An exclusive composition of soothing and
fantasy-stimulating sandalwood that reminds of
the Orient is combined with notes of beguiling
freesia and spicy cloves that can be associated
with an exotic spice market. No.12 MOOD ebony
is an exclusive composition full of longing,
attraction, and devotion.
133
It is the first fragrance that the marque
has visualized as a work of art. German
artist M ateusz Katzig painted a
mysterious palace with colourful
mountains of spices, blazing fountains of
incense, and magical creatures. The
artwork will be shown on the central
display of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS
SUV.
EXCLUSIVE EXTERIOR ELEM EN TS
The exterior design: Hallmark Maybach
front end, chrome accents and brand
emblem as a design element
Mercedes-Maybach enriches the
dynamic purpose design of the EQS SUV
from Mercedes-EQ with exclusive
elements that give it its very own
character.
The large black panel is smooth closed
for the first time. The high-tech element
for the radar sensors is fully integrated
and no longer visible. Mercedes-Benz
development succeeded in using the
material indium, which is permeable to
radar beams, in the entire panel area.
The wafer-thin, shiny silver material is
covered with a black lacquer finish. This
creates a unique high-gloss black
appearance with an extraordinary
depth effect.
The classic M AYBACH lettering is
discretely incorporated into a
chrome-plated decorative strip, which
forms a unit with the continuous light
strip of the standard DIGITAL LIGHT
headlights.
The Maybach pattern with several small
brand emblems can also be found in
trim parts of the side bumper.
DIGITAL LIGHT welcomes and says
goodbye to the driver with a special
light show. When the doors are opened,
the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV
welcomes its passengers with a
M aybach emblem projected onto the
ground next to the vehicle via the
exterior mirrors. As a further greeting, an
animated projection of the Maybach
pattern lights up on the floor when the
doors are opened.
When viewed from the side, specific
features include the bold chrome
surrounds on the side windows and the
chrome-plated B-pillar trim.
This decorative element is an integral
part of the Mercedes-Maybach
signature and highlights the length of
the rear seating area. While the
M aybach emblem, underlining high
quality, shines on the D-pillar, the subtle
EQS lettering is integrated into the front
window triangle.
The pronounced wheel arches with
claddings in high-gloss black emphasize
the SUV's power and emotional
presence. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS
SUV has exclusive 21-inch alloy and
forged wheels, including MAYBACH
lettering on the integrated exquisitely
designed wheel hub caps.
135
Another striking detail is the standard running
boards, which are illuminated in the dark and
feature a stylishly integrated Maybach
emblem. The surface is made of anodized
aluminum, which echoes the pinstripe look of
the black panel front.
The exclusive character is also underlined at
the rear of the vehicle: The rear lights are
designed in a continuous light strip with a
two- part helix and animated across the
entire width. Further enhancements to the rear
are the chrome trim elements on the tailgate,
the rear apron, the spoiler lip, and the
MAYBACH lettering.
"Mercedes-Maybach customers expect the
extraordinary, and we aim to exceed their
high expectations. The Mercedes-Maybach
EQS SUV unites our ambition to lead in digital
and electric with our focus on the luxury
segment. The first all- electric vehicle from
Mercedes-Maybach complements the best
technologies from Mercedes-Benz with the
extra comfort and individual details that are
only available from Mercedes-Maybach."
