Side Trip:
Every October as we put together the
Christmas edition of OKOBOJI Magazine
(a sister publication to the one
you are reading), I scold myself for not
working ahead and getting photos finished
for our food feature
a year in advance,
before my Christmas
dishes and decor
are packed away.
This year was finally
different and Friday
evening I was ready
for the finishing
touches. That involved
needing some ribbons
and tags from
my basement, so I
loaded the food and
other props in a sturdy
MYRNA
WAGNER
wicker box to transport them downstairs in
preparation for the photo shoot.
When I set the box on my basement
counter, I realized a sticky substance was
leaking out the bottom of the box. My
first thought was that a cork bottle stopper
had come loose, but I quickly realized the
gingerbread syrup was leaking from the bottom
of a decorative glass bottle.
There was no towel or paper towel handy
as the sticky mess accumulated on the
counter. I ran for the bathroom to grab a
towel, and by the time I returned, the syrup
was dripping off the counter and puddling
on the concrete floor.
I eventually found an empty water cup in
which to place the leaking jar.
Then I assessed the damage. There was a
stream of syrup down each step, across the
family room carpet, puddled on the concrete,
dripping from the countertop and all
over my right shoe and pants leg.
Two hours later, the mess was cleaned
up; another hour after that the photos were
done and ready for next year.
Not the way I’d planned for that to go,
but I’ll still be grateful come October.

Get ready to run.
Or walk if that’s more your speed. In general,
the Okoboji Winter Games 5K Fun Run
is all about just having fun.
The event will take place on Saturday, Jan. 25,
and will start at Arnolds Park Amusement Park.
Check-in takes place from 8-8:45 a.m. with the
race starting at 9 a.m.
This event has been a part of the University of
Winter Games for a very long time.
“The 5K has been a part of U of O Winter
Games almost the duration of the event. Lakes
Regional used to head the event then The IGLA
Chamber took it over with our games with Kozy
Heat as the returning sponsor we are so excited
to keep it alive,” said Morgan
Strauss, the director of events
from the Iowa Great Lakes Area
Chamber of Commerce. “It is
such a fun way to kick off the
weekend.”
The event is geared toward all
ages.
“The 5K is such an inclusive
event to kick off such a fun Saturday
morning. It seems to be a
tradition for some and a great
way to be active,” Strauss said.
The amount of people that
participate in this event every
year really depends on the sun
and the temperatures.
“The numbers varies depending
on if the sun is shining that
morning,” Strauss said. “We usually have around
150-200 participants.”
The raceway is full of people ready to cheer on
the runners or walkers/
“The race starts on Lake Street right in front of
the Arnolds Parks Amusement Park entrance with
a cheer from our wonderful cheerleaders then
they are off down Lake Street, continue on the
side of Highway 71 to the neighborhood behind
the Amusement Park and finish down the promenade
which is always a fun way to finish a race
— going downhill,” Strauss said.
The 5K is one of many fun events that Strauss
hopes brings people happiness over the weekend
of University of Okoboji Winter Games.
“I always hope that our events are the reason
someone comes back to this amazing area and if
a 5K Fun Run is the reason, we will continue to
do it, with hopes they come back with the generations
to come,” Strauss said. F

Chili Cook-Off brings the heat to Winter Games
Get in early. Enjoy them all while they’re hot.
The University of Okoboji Winter Games
is set for its 45th edition and as always the
Chili Cook-Off is ready to welcome folks to town
with several hearty helpings.
This year the festivities will run from 5-7 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 24, at the Dickinson County Expo
Center in Spirit Lake.
A commemorative Winter Games mug serves as
the ticket to the event and will cost $10 either in
advance or at the door, though Morgan Strauss,
director of events for the Iowa Great Lakes Area
Chamber of Commerce highly recommends both
getting the mug in advance and showing up as
soon as the doors open to the cook-off.
“This event is the one where we have the most
people come through in the shortest amount of
time,” Strauss said. “We expect about 2,000 people
to come through. We can’t always guarantee
chili will be left if people arrive at the tail end!”
So far there are 20 businesses and organizations
signed up to showcase their favorite chili recipes
for the public, and Strauss expects a few more
before the big day.
Visitors have the chance to vote for their favorite
chili, as well as Best Booth and Best Nonprofit,
with the winners announced at the Burning of the
Green and Fireworks Extravaganza the following
night.
Each year the booth decorations center around
a theme and this time it will be Tailgate Throwback,
so sports gear with a sense of nostalgia will
be a common sight.
And for those senses of taste and smell it will be
all about the chili.
“I never really knew people considered chili
so differently until I came to the chili cook-off,”
Strauss said. “Some say chili can’t have beans, or
some say it can only be ground beef, vegetables
and beans. We’ve had a white chicken chili come
close to winning, so you truly see and taste it all.”
Whether you try all 20 chilis, or just come for
the camaraderie and to add another mug to the
collection, the cook-off is always must on the
Winter Games to-do list. F

Don’t forget to tip your bartenders.
Thankfully that’s never a problem
at this party. The 11th Annual
Battle of the Bartenders is ready once
again to kick off the University of
Okoboji Winter Games with a charity
competition that always sets the bar
high.
From 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23,
nearly 30 bars and restaurants will
dish out cocktail samples in a bid to
raise the most money for their charity
of choice. There is no cover charge for
the event though wallets are typically
wide-open supporting a variety of
worthwhile causes.
“It’s really awesome because it just
keeps going and the last couple of
years I feel like it’s caught even more
wind and growth and expansion
than ever before,” said Debbie Parks,
marketing director at Parks Marina.
“We’ve turned over
the hosting to
Jimmy Mac and Jeff
Thee and it’s just
so fun to step back
and watch them
take the reins. I’m so
proud of the event.
It’s become the biggest
fundraiser of
the year and such
a huge community
event. We’ve raised
well over $100,000
to date!”
That generosity
and growth has
spurred a few changes
in recent years regarding
the payouts
and distributions of
donations.
This year each
participating bartender
will automatically receive
$250 toward their charity. The top
five bartenders in terms of tips at the
end of the event will received tiered
payouts for their charity, which ended
up numbering almost $10,000 for the
first place winner last year.
To facilitate continued growth in
giving this year it will be the first time
people will have the ability to donate
online.
Whether someone can’t make it
to the event or simply would prefer
donating from the comfort of their
phone, Battle of the Bartenders will
have a Venmo account and QR code.
Proceeds from that avenue will go into
a general fund that will be divided
among the top five finishers.
A list of bartenders and their charities,
as well as a link to the Venmo
code can be found at the Parks Marina
website and on their Facebook
page.
“It’s unbelievable what started off
as kind of a night for locals to have
fun and do some good at the same
time has grown into this huge event,”
Parks said. “The secret is out that this
is kind of fun! We’ve put Thursday
night on the map for Winter Games
