Nine months after what was supposed to be a temporary
THE DEMISE OF DIVERSITY
BY RICHARD PIKE & ZACH KEIRSEY
rpike@techpep.org
zkeirsey@techpep.org
It’s an average gloomy overcast day in Portland, but
possibly a bit more so inside Benson’s doors. Within
these chipped and dull orange double doors, there are
a few select students wanting to change the way the
administration has done its business this year, the year
we and the other seniors graduate. What we are proposing
isn’t too much; it’s more of an obligation to
the administration to see this plan go into action. I
am of course talking about the Diversity Assembly. We
have seen a Diversity Assembly during school all three
years I’ve attended Benson. So this year, when a rumor
spread that the diversity assembly would be happening
after school, we were quite upset, along with
at least 213 other students who signed a petition we
created against the assembly being held after hours.
These signatures, collected in four days by five strongwilled
students wanting what we’re sure more than
213 students wanted. By weeks end, we collated the
petitions, copied them, and turned the original copy
in to interim co-principal Susan Schenk for review.
What she said astounded even us, students at fully
aware of the craftiness the administration was capable
of. If you doubt the guile of the administration, just
look at our situation with Christie Plinski. I rest my
case.
“Well this is all great, but I don’t think a diversity
assembly is even scheduled.”
So what we are dealing with is not that a diversity
assembly will be happening during school, but even
if its happening at all. Clearly, we needed to investigate
further. What better person to talk to than Ms.
Figueroa herself, the coordinator of the diversity assembly.
Talking to her proved to be a success, because we
actually got an accurate answer, with proof to back it
up. Ms. Figueroa told us that a diversity assembly had
been planned, but due to the feelings of the diversity
committee about having an after school assembly, cre-
ated a conflict ultimately leading to the relinquishment
of the mere idea of even having the assembly.
She also told us that there may be a solution; all we
have to do is talk to the administration to schedule a
time and date. This is easier said than done.
So we traveled to the administration office again
to speak with Mrs. Schenk. Upon talking to her she
was just as, if not less helpful than previously. She told
us that even if it were to happen, the parents of the
students would be upset and it would be extremely
difficult to notify the parents by sending flyers home
with the students. In spite of Mrs. Schenk’s comment,
we are aware of the auto-dialing system at the school
used to notify parents on the telephone, which is actually
much more efficient than the latter. She also
told us, that for anything to happen, we would have to
speak with Mr. Phillips, because he is in charge of the
situation, not she.
The next day we spoke with Mr. Phillips, and he
said he would arrange a meeting about the Diversity
Assembly and the petition with Mr. Olczak. We tried
to follow up on our meeting with Mr. Phillips but every
time we came to the vice principal’s office he was
either busy, absent, or in a meeting. It was only on the
29th of April that we finally were able to speak with
him again. He told us that the diversity committee had
dropped Ms. Figueroa as their advisor, and that the
diversity committee had until the morning of the 30th
to produce a timeline for the assembly. He said if this
failed to happen, a Diversity Assembly would not happen,
and because of how late it has been scheduled,
even if a timeline surfaced, it would still be after school.
The administration has shown an extreme lack of
self-confidence, and ill consideration for the success
of their students, and for the traditions that go on here
at Benson. Their seemingly purposeful unhelpfulness
has greatly contributed to the struggles at making a
diversity assembly transpire. This might be because
the busyness of the administration, or the fact that we
do not have a real principal, nevertheless this Benson
tradition has a great possibility of ceasing to exist.
“Fair” Less Square?
BY ANNIE CHEN
achen@techpep.org
There has been talk, as reported by various news sources, that Tri-Met
is considering big changes to the MAX after a recent attack on a MAX
rider in Gresham. One of the biggest changes would require either eliminating
fareless square or limiting the hours from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.. The
thought is, I believe, that many of the unwanted users hop onto the train
in fareless square.
That may be true but the majority of my MAX rides have seen little to
no problems, so I wouldn’t be able to give a first-hand account. Sure, I’ve
seen homeless people hopping on at Lloyd Center and using the train as
a temporary shelter or begging for change to have food in their stomach
for a day. Overall, there have been no drastic problems to where things
need to be changed at all.
The more I think about it, the more I think interfering with fareless
square is a bad idea. First and foremost, downtown is designed around
public transit and pedestrian traffic and there is a lot going on after the
hour of 7 p.m. A lot of people use the MAX to get to downtown and do
their shopping without the hassle of finding parking in the crowded
downtown streets or having to pay $7.50 for parking. Eliminating fareless
square is only going to increase number of people, as those who live near
it are no longer going to take public transit but instead get in their cars
and try to find parking.
In related news, downtown’s economy derives on public transit like
the MAX. Downtown Portland may not be that bad compared to other
densely populated cities but it is still not the best place to drive a car. This
is why the MAX is put in an area like this; to provide the public with an
easier way to get around downtown, or other destinations without having
to worry about wasting gas looking for parking closest to the store
they are shopping at, or having to worry about parking meters.
Finally, unless I’m mistaken, crime isn’t a huge issue on the MAX
downtown. It’s out in Hillsboro and Gresham; both areas which are well
outside fareless square. Tri-met should try and catch those breaking the
laws of the MAX. These people would include those who do not pay the
MAX fare and assault other MAX riders, like the MAX rider in Gresham
who was attacked.
This of course will have to lead to hiring more fare inspectors, which
initially will lead to higher cost, but that’s how it is when people do not
obey the law. When people do not pay their fare, Tri-Met loses profit and
still have to raise the fare to catch up with the fares that were not paid.

PROM KING DETHRONED
BY RICH PIKE
rpike@techpep.org
Benson’s Prom on May 9
proved to be a night to remember
“until the end of time.”
Putting aside the other important
aspects of prom — people
dancing, photos being taken,
punch being consumed — the
main controversial question is
who actually won the highly
sought after title of Prom King?
This may be a surprise to some
students and faculty, because it
was not until one witness overheard
a conversation between
several students in charge of
counting votes did the discrepancy
over who won Prom King
even begin.
To start, the counting of votes
was the source of the problems
that followed. Juniors and
sophomores, under the direct supervision
of Mr. Pellico — who
told us that the entire prom voting
process was a fiasco and that
he didn’t know who won —
came up with an inaccurate decision
on the winner of Prom King.
According to Kevin Jones, student
body president, he approached
the vote counters asking
who the winner was. They, according
to Kevin, told him Zack
Keirsey was in the lead, while others
c;laimed Meron won.
Who, then was the actual victor?
Mr. Pellico said there couldn’t
be a recount because the ballots
were all thrown away.
Jones decided to invalidate the
election; therefore, Meron
Kahsay did not win the Prom
King vote, nor did Zack Keirsey,
or any of the “high profile” students
likely to win.
Does this dispute really come
down to a simple question of
who is the champ? Or does it go
as far as a question of popularity?
Kevin Jones explained that at
first, he questioned who Zack
was, because frankly he didn’t
know Zack as well as he does
Meron, and neither did the vote
counters.
Otha Banks, a witness during
the counting process, overheard
people saying they didn’t know
who Zack was.
Because of the doubt over
who won the election, Jones de-
HERE’S WHAT WE THINK
Aside from the questions
that remain, the contest was
a failure. A more organized,
fail-proof process would be
a better option not only for
next year’s Prom King and
Queen Vote, but for the
upcoming student body
elections. First, a dedicated
committee should be
created and comprised of
responsible students,
teachers and administrators.
This way we can have
everyone involved, but also
have it run smoothly and
reliably. Another idea is one
vote per person; many
candidates’ voters were
seen casting multiple votes
into the ballot box without
any objections by the vote
counters. This is another
reason why a trustworthy
Prom elections committee
should be implemented.
cided to crown Kahsay.
According to witnesses interviewed
by Tech Pep, Meron was
trailing by a crucial 10 vote gap,
took second place, but was
quickly annointed Prom King
due to his popularity between the
vote counters.
Since this incident has occurred,
the scandal of who the
actual Prom King is has become
common knowledge. Kevin
Jones and the administration currently
have no plans to announce
who actually won the title of
prom King. As far as any of the
class of 2008 is concerned, the
true King of Benson’s prom will
remain a mystery, “until the end
of time.”
OUTDOOR SCHOOL
EXPERIENCE
BY: Esperanza Rendon
Outdoor school was an amazing
experience that I will never
forget. Each day was filled with
surprises and excitement. I
learned a lot from all the kids that
I worked with. Even though I was
teaching them about science, they
were teaching me about life. I
learned that children lead by example,
if I was enthusiastic about
soil, so were they. Most all of the
kids were eager to learn and
happy to have my attention, in a
short amount of time I grew and
matured tremendously.
Helping to take care of nine
girls in my cabin was a huge wake
up call for me. I’m 16 years old,
and certainly not ready to fully
take care of anyone. I can’t even
completely take care of myself. So
it was amazing for me to have to
care for someone young children.
I had to entertain the girls, get
them where they needed to be on
much more. The girls looked up
Amazing, unforgettable experience
BY TENZIN PALYON
It is clearly known to the public that the 2008
Olympic event is held in China, but not everyone
is happy and content with the event. People all
around the world has been contradicting whether
the event should be held in China due to the Chinese
long history of communist actions. It is the
year of opportunity for the Tibetans to reveal the
truth to the rest of the world between China and
Tibet.
On March 10, 2008, Chinese government took
a brutal action against the Tibetan demonstrators
in Lhasa, capital of Tibet. March 10 is an annual
protesting day for the Tibetans since Tibet was occupied
by China since 1959. It is unusual for the
Tibetans to protest in their country that is highly
controlled by Chinese authority but this year Tibetans
in Tibet marched through Lhasa carrying banners
and signs opposing the Olympic event in
China. During the protest occurred, hundreds of
heavily armed Chinese militiamen immediately
took action against the nonviolent demonstrators
and killing seven Tibetan monks. Chinese military
action against the Tibetans angered many Tibetans
to me and that was a beautiful
thing. I loved being around such
sweet little human beings. They
have so much energy and are
truly intelligent people. I was surprised
at how much I learned
from just spending a week with
about 100 sixth graders.
Out on the Sandy River camp
grounds I wasn’t the girlie girl
that I normally am when I’m at
home. I left all the drama and
make-up behind. That week I
had become someone new,
down to earth and enthusiastic.
I love the person that I became.
Being around so many cool
people helped bring me out of
my shell. I was outgoing and silly.
I didn’t complain about the cold-
COLUMN
ness or the early mornings and
late nights, yet I rejoiced the
laughter and smiles that were
shared between all of us.
I’m really happy with
everything that I took out of this
experience. I made many new
friendships that helped make my
week at Sandy River even more
memorable. It was funny because
I cried before I came to outdoor
school yet I cried when I left. It
was hard leaving a place that I had
grown to know so well and love
so much. The group of student
leaders and staff were all amazing.
The staff members were all
kind and weren’t power hungry,
authority figures. So I felt like I
could approach them with a
question or even a problem.
Overall outdoor school was better
for me the second time
around and I took a lot from it.
In the end, I really hope that I
impacted all the children in a
positive way .I want them to look
back on their outdoor school experience
and remember me,
Uprising of Tibetan Support
and supporters all around the world. Presently
there are thousands of pro Tibetan protestors all
around the world and a massive amount of supporters.
China’s intensions for the Olympic torch was
to carry it all around the world and show how big
their country is but their plan didn’t go as they
planned. The torch faced oppositions every time it
appeared in the public. It is a symbol of Olympic
spirit and ideally, shouldn’t be extinguished from
the time it is lit and to the end of the game. Occasionally
the flame went out as a result of bad
weather or mechanical malfunction with the torch.
But it has been a long time since it was extinguished
as a result of protests against the host country’s political
and human right policies. The torch was
heavily demonstrated in London and Extinguished
several times in France.
London and France weren’t the only place
where the Olympic torch was heavily opposed by
the public. There were approximately five thousand
Tibetans and six thousand American supporters
which forced the torch barrier to detour their first
plan. This kind of protest shows how much people
around the world are in disfavor of Chinese.

I don’t remember how I came
then I haven’t been able to get them
out of my head.
Since 2004, the electro-house
duo composed of vocalist Alice
Glass and multi-instrumentalist
Ethan Kath have been playing and
selling-out shows all over North
America and Europe, even before
releasing a full album.
Their immense popularity can
be credited by an accident, when a
microphone test by Glass was released
on Myspace entitled “Alice
Practice.”
Glass was unaware of its release
until record companies heard the
recording and contacted them
with record deals offers.
They further gained fame following
rave reviews from prominent
indie music website Pitchfork
Media and selling all 500 copies of
their first EP in only 3 days.
On March 18, The Torontobased
group released their first,
self-titled, full-length album. In the
album Glass’ distorted, alternating
harsh and soft, dark vocals are
stripped down, draped with Kath’s
infectious, icy, Nintendo Aurora
Borealis, while heavy, looping
synth beats take charge and move
every bone in your body.
One word to describe the album
would be “Unpredictable.”
Songs vary from trance-like loops
of “Magic Spells” to harsh, electronic
seizures of “Xxzxcuzx Me”
and “Loving and Caring,” with every
combination in between, and
on the final track, “Tell Me What
acoustic guitar.
My personal favorites include
“Courtship Dating,” “Vanished,”
and “Black Panther.”
reasons I moved here, to skate
How much do you spend on
—FROM ‘PRINCIPAL’ PAGE 1
In 2003, district officials and school
board members started changing school
policies.
A long-time Benson tradition, writing
a required letter of application, was
eliminated when the district moved to
the enrollment lottery.
Last year Benson lost approximately
eight full-time staffing positions for the
second year in a row, some of that due
to enrollment decline. Although
Benson’s CTE enrollment generates a
majority of CTE funds for the district, the
district does not allocate the money
based on school CTE enrollment.
Instead, the money is used to hire coordinators
to oversee these programs at
each high school. While Benson’s funding
took a hit, no coordinator was appointed
to our school.
Pathways can be job shadows or career
research at schools that are unequipped
to offer career preparation
programs such as Benson’s.
Benson is unique among PPS’s 10
must apply to through the district’s enrollment
lottery. It’s also the only high
school focused on career and technical
TECH IDOL ENTERTAINS
Amidst the lack of enough judges and
the threat of a last minute cancellation,
those organizing and performing in the
fourth annual Tech Idol managed to provide
a night of entertainment, as well as a
wide range of talent.
Twelve performers graced the stage of
the Benson auditorium: Alexis, Sandra,
Janine, Chelsea, Netty, Tre, Tyson, Chico,
Jane, Alena, Alaine, Bianca, Shakhara and
several others.
All of them dazzled the audience with
the magical combination of vocals and
melodies intertwined into a brilliant harmony,
some more than others, bringing
forth laughter, smiles and applause to those
graced by the sounds of Benson students.
The diversity of those who performed,
as well as the range of musical genres displayed,
is symbolic of Benson as a whole,
people uniting to strive towards a common
goal, regardless of the differences between
one another.
This was proven not only by the main
performers of the show, the intermission
performance provided further insight of
Benson’s diversity and unbelievable talent.
Seniors Brent Ellingson, Andrew Girres,
Taylor Louie, Marques Allen and junior
Darray Frazier performed the classic “Tender
Roni” by Bobby Brown, and although
it wasn’t an official performance, these
gentlemen officially and savagely owned
the stage.
Where singing talent was lacked, the
group made up for it with enthusiasm and
dancing, getting the crowd involved, and
even pulling one lucky lady onto the stage.
As though this wasn’t enough, Brent
Ellingson proceeded to take off his hat, sunglasses,
and inevitably his shirt.
at Tech Idol Show.
“Pale or not pale, I had to take it off. It
just seemed like the right thing to do,” said
Brent Ellingson.
All in all, despite a few minor inconveniences,
those who planned and performed
in the 2008 Tech Idol did an outstanding
job. The winner ended up being
Alexis Jackson, but the real winners were
those there.

BOOK...
You may not be the type to read lots of books but who
said all books are for reading ? Recently Apple sales have
been dominating in the market of computers and other
electronic products. The best seller for Apple was also
voted best-designed laptop of 2007 — the nimble but
quick MacBook Pro. Starting at just 1999$. The MacBook
has it all — a wide 15’ inch screen, 2.4 intel core 2 duo
processor, 2GB of RAM, 8x Superdrive and a spacious
200gb hard drive. This machine is greatly designed and
every quarter it just seems to get better. Run by the
awesome Mac OS X Leopard which has been proven
faster then Vista.
The Casio Exlim Pro Ex-F1 is soon to hit the streets
with its great durable feel and its amazing speed
breaking every record set for a digital camera.
Recording video at an outrageous 1200-fps. The
shutter sounds like a machine gun, there is a built in
memory buffer so if you miss that have to have shot the
camera probably already stored it ! Sure it cost you a
whooping 1000 dollars but in most terms its worth, well
if your a photography person at least. Soon to hit
World of tech
“08”
It’s nearing mid-2008 and the
production of electronics are
improving each and every day. So
many surprises came in the year
2007 and we are almost certain to
be shocked this year. TV has taken it
to a higher level, Blue Ray has been
blowing our minds, PS3 and Xbox
360 are still fighting and no phone
has topped Apple’s iphone yet!
Buckle up everyone — we are in for a
ride.
HAsta La Vista,
Vista...
Vista has been out for the last year now
and chairman of Microsoft Bill Gates is
happy to announce that there are 100
million users using Vista. Well he never
told you how the number of people that
were projected was 270 million which
makes Bill’s happy 100 million another
170 million under schedule. But lately
Vista sale have risen almost invisibly but
it still does not beat even 50 percent of
Apple’s Leopard. This coming June
Microsoft is planning to to take out all old
OS’s like XP and 2003 and make it
necesary to upgrade to Vista.
GTA 4: A MUST
HAVE...
Now the most highly anticipated game of the
year is finally released. Grand Theft Auto IV
returns you back to the setting of Liberty
City, doing basically what you do on all
GTA’s; rob, steal, sell, fight, bomb, and
much more. The game will retail at $59.99
for both next-Gen consoles and $79.99 for
the special collector’s edition which
includes a real safety deposit box with key,
an art book, a exclusive soundtrack, the
GTA game disc and it all comes packed in
an exclusive Rockstar duffle bag. Hurry and
IPHONE
2 ?
Well it’s not really so much an
iphone 2, as it is the second
generation, and there are a few
changes but none that are over
the edge unbelievable. For
starters the biggest change is
the back. As you can see it’s
now black and glossy with no
metal. The phone is slightly
thicker then the current one. It
now features 3g network (finally).
The headphone jack is now
flushed instead of being
recessed with the body. Also the
volume buttons are now chrome
and the screen and resolution
are so close to the same. The
product is not officially
confirmed but if it is, the release
is set for late summer.
Yu Darvish a member of Nippon
Ham FIGHTERS in his opening game of
his season threw 124 pitches, with 4 hits
and 10 strikeouts ! His last pitch of the
game broke his oppents bat in half and
the ball sailed back to him as he turned
and tossed it to first base for the final
out. Even though it was one game he has
been known to dominate the mound
his entire life. With his 6 foot 5 height
and some say he even has the face of a
model, but enough of the small talk lets
talk baseball. Japan has known to produce
superstars to america. Names like
Ichiro, Hideki Matsui and the newest
instalation Daisuke Matsuzaka or “Dice
a star like the rest of them but he also
wants the money to charging between
50-75 million$ to even speak with him
!
So the real question is who can afford
that ? Well its no doubt the yankees
can and boy do they need it struggling
to even keeping there record at
the 500% mark, how ever they did just
pay A-Rod that 275 million dollar contract
agreement lasting for 10 years and
a bonus if he surpasses bonds home
run record. Yet the yanks always manage
there money problems. Another
team on the look out is of couse the
Red Sox who have already one of the
most deadliest pitching rotations in the
mlb. With Becket, Dice K, Schilling and
Papelbon closing them out. An addition
with Darvish would make the defending
champs just that much better. The
dodgers, Angels and Cubs can also afford
him but it would come with a lot
of extra salary cap reconstruction as far
as the rest of the league they can hope
could get injured in 1 pitch of the game.
Barry Zito the ace of San Fracisco Giants
alone just made a 75 million dollar 5
year deal !
Now lets look at his cons, well for
starters he is all but 21 years of age with
no 1 day of MLB ball play. He has yet
thrown 1 pitch to hitters like A-Rod,
Alfonso soriano, Big Pappi and much
much more. Also he has never lived in
the U.S so the enviorment will be something
just might be so high and such a risk
that he might not get a call but the worst
that could happen is he would lower his
Knee surgery,
out 4-6 weeks
BY PhilliP Melson
pmelson @techpep.org
Tiger Woods will miss
the chance to defend
his title at the Wachovia
Championship this year,
because he is expected
to be out for 4-6 weeks.
On, April 15 th , three days
after finishing second
at The Masters, Woods
had arthroscopic surgery
on his left knee. It had
been bothering him for
months, but he waited
until after The Masters to
have his surgery. “I made
the decision to deal with
the pain and schedule the
surgery after the Masters,”
Woods said on his Web
site. “The upside is that
I have been through this
process before, and
know how to handle it.”
ABOVE: Tiger Woods himself in action
Being only 32, this was
Woods’s third surgery on
the same knee. The first
was in 1994 to remove
a benign tumor, and the
second in 2002 was to
remove a benign cyst.
Recently Woods had a
checkup on his knee, and
he told Golf Digest.com:
“It went great. Everything
is right on schedule.” If
he takes longer than 4-6
weeks to recover he may
miss the chance to participate
in the U.S. Open.
“The doctors said I
should be able to play
in four to six weeks after
the surgery, but there
are no guarantees about
anything right now,”
Woods said on Golf
Digest.com. “I’m just going
to work hard and do
what they tell me to do.”
the Oregon players were 5th and 7th round
draft picks. The Dallas Cowboys in my
opinion had a bad draft the first and second
day the Cowboys trade a lot of there draft
picks and passed up on Mario Manningham
a WR (wide receiver) from Michigan which
the New York Giants picked up in the Third
round which my opinion of that decision
was stupid on the Cowboys part they would
have had a backup receiver and he probably
would of started with Terrell Owens but
that was there decision.

The NBA playoffs have showed us alot of amazing things. We
have seen Chris Paul dominate and throw up wild circus shots,
we have seen Lebron James jump out the gym, not to mention
the Atlanta Hawks almost take out the Celtics in the first round
and Tim Duncan hit his first 3 pointer of the year in a clutch
time which may have changed the outcome of the playoffs. It all
started with the Lakers were best in the west and Celts best in
the east. Kobe Mvp which makes the Lakers most feared.
4 teams are left Pistons Vs. Celtics and Lakers vs. Spurs.
Each team only 8 wins away from crowning themselves as the
champs. A preview of the match ups at close.
In the east we have the Pistons and the Celtics. Both are the
top 2 seeds in the east with boston being the 1 seed but lost 2
games to the Pistons in the regular season. This year the Celts
had the leagues best defense whiched helped them win 67 games
this season. This was the biggest ever increase in win/loss ratio
in one season. Thanks to help of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen
and already having hometown hero Paul Peirce makes them a
dominant force. But the Pistons have won before with the team
they have and have the experience and maturity to knock out
the NBA’s best.
As far as the west coast the champs are letting you know that
they are here and have not lost a step, the San Antonio Spurs
will defend there title against the MVP Kobe Bryant and his La
Lakers. The Lakers have only had one game this playoffs were
they failed to pass the century mark which means they can
score. Also they are younger than San Antonio but have the experience
to win it all. This is going to be a tough series and don’t
be surprised to see it go 7 because the fight in these teams make
that very possible.
The actual out come of whats going to happen is unknown so
all we can do is watch here are the schedule’s for both series.
The stage is set are conference champs at
last only 4 cold wins away from holding the
famous Stanley Cup. Out the west we have
the Detriot Red Wings who had the best record
in the league, and beat out the Dallas
Stars in 6 games. Out of the east we have
the young sensation, Sidney Crosby also
known as Sid The Kid who has led his team
to there first NHL championship in a long
time now. Crosby himself has took himself
to the cup in just three years which was less
time then wayne gretzky, which happens
to be another record broken. Anywho the
battle begins and one team will win. .
Death At The Derby
BY BrenT ellingson
Tech pep reporter
Despite the grandeur of the
Kentucky Derby, large hats, mint
juleps and the natural excitement
of small men riding large,
fast horses, the 2008 Derby was
marred with tragedy.
Eight Belles, the first filly (female
horse), in nine years to
compete in the race, and only
the thirty ninth filly ever to do
so, finished in second place,
five lengths behind the victor
Big Brown. What started as
a major accomplishment, soon
turned bitter as the horse collapsed
while trotting along the
track after the race, fracturing
both front ankles. Dr. Larry
Bramlage, the on-call veterinarian,
stated that the injuries sustained
by the horse were too severe
to even attempt to move
her off the track. Due to the immense
pain the horse was in, as
well as the hopelessness of its
future, Eight Belles had to be
euthanized (killed) on the track
in front of the 157,770 in attendance.
The situation is most definitely
sad, however the horse could
not have picked a better place in
the world to shatter both front
ankles and be killed before her
time

Archaeological finds
A few of the treasures unearthed by
Indiana Jones:
Golden Idol
Appearance: “Raiders
of the Lost Ark”
The idol Indiana
Jones retrieves in
South America is
fictional, but is
based on an
actual Aztec
statue known
as the goddess of obstetrics.
Headpiece of
the Staff of Ra
Appearance: “Raiders
of the Lost Ark”
Indiana Jones uses the
headpiece to the Staff
of Ra to pinpoint the final resting place of the
Ark of the Covenant. According to the movie,
the fictional headpiece was inscribed on two
sides. When both sides were read properly, the
headpiece would reveal how tall the staff
needed to be in order for the sun to hit the
jewel at its center.
The Ark of the Covenant
Appearance: “Raiders of the Lost Ark”
According to Jewish history, the Ark protected
the Israelites as they searched for the
Promised Land, and it helped destroy the great
walled city of Jericho. King Solomon constructed
a temple and placed the Covenant in
the inner sanctum, the “Holy of Holies.” After
the Babylonians plundered the Temple, the
Ark vanishes into myth.
Sankara Stones
Appearance: “Indiana Jones
and the Temple of Doom”
The stones are really
“lingas” or
sacred Hindu symbols.
Filmmaker
George Lucas created
the fictional
“Sankara Stones,”
which are used to
grant fertility to Shiva’s worshipers. Real lingas
can be small enough to be used as amulets
or large and set in altars.
The Holy Grail
Appearance: “Indiana
Jones and the Last
Crusade”
The Grail was said to be the cup
that Jesus Christ drank from at the
Last Supper, and the cup which
Joseph of Arimathea caught
Christ’s blood in when Christ
was removed from the cross. The major
strand of the Grail legend probably started
with Chretien de Troyes, a French
poet of the 12th century.
Indiana Jones — the man who put sex
appeal into excavating dirt mounds, crawling
through bug-filled caves and knowing world history.
The name of Indiana Jones has become synonymous
with archaeology and adventure. His fictional
exploits have sparked the interest of generations of
students, making it cool to be an archaeologist. His
jacket and bullwhip are even in the Smithsonian
Institution’s legacy collection.
And his archaeological exploits have
taken him — and us — all over the world.
In the first movie, “Raiders of the Lost
Ark,” Jones visits South America, hunting a
golden idol; Nepal, where he met up with his
old lover, Marion Ravenwood; and finally Egypt,
hunting the Ark of the Covenant.
In “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” Jones
visits Shanghai and a maharajah’s palace in India. In
the third movie, “Indiana Jones and the Last
Crusade,” he and his estranged father, Henry, travel
through Venice, Austria and Berlin before heading on
to the Middle East in search of the Holy Grail.
Where will he be going this time?
