were stolen. If you can help find them, email barry@starmedia.kiwi
ALL CRAIG and Catherine Welsh
want is the return of family heirlooms,
including war medals, taken during the
burglary of their home.
They are now scouring social media
sites, including Facebook Marketplace,
and have been in contact with pawn
shops, in the hope they will turn up.
Their home in Goulds Rd, Rolleston,
was broken into two weekends ago when
they were away on holiday. It was one
of four homes in the West Rolleston/
Brookside which have been burgled in
recent weeks, police say.
Catherine said the burglary was
devastating.
The burglar took her late father
Corporal Doug Stanton’s military
medals. He served in Malaya, Borneo,
and Vietnam where he was wounded in
the leg on Valentine’s Day 1968.
MALCOLM LYALL has
really opened up a hornets’
nest leading into this year’s
local body elections.
They might be still several
months away but the political
drums are beating over his
“old Pakeha men living in
the past” comment, reported
in last week’s Selwyn Times.
Today, the argy-bargy
(page 3) continues between
Lyall and Stuart McKinlay,
the Lincoln resident who
made a complaint to the
council about Lyall’s
comment.
Lyall is unrepentant.
We have received a swag of
reader responses (see pages
14-15) to last week’s article.
There were also a number
events
Page 17
which could not be published
because of space. All of
those were critical of Lyall,
and the council for making
a submission against the
Treaty Principles Bill.
October’s election will be
very interesting.
Lyall unrepentant amid backlash
• By Daniel Alvey
DEPUTY MAYOR Malcolm
Lyall is not backing down about
his comments towards a ratepayer
who laid a complaint against him.
Lyall called supporters of the
Treaty Principles Bill “old Pākehā
men living in the past” during a
debate on the bill during the final
council meeting of last year.
That led to Lincoln resident
Stuart McKinlay complaining
to the council, calling Lyall’s
remarks “racist” and “offensive”.
Lyall was unapologetic about the
complaint, which was dismissed,
saying it was “a badge of honour”.
Now McKinlay has responded,
calling Lyall’s response “stupid”.
“This ridiculous statement by
Malcolm Lyall coupled with his
lack of respect for ratepayers who
elected him to represent their
interests, suggests he is not fit
to hold the office of councillor,’
McKinlay told Selwyn Times.
During the debate, Lyall said the
council must continue supporting
the treaty, “and not bow down to
the pressure of Hobson’s Pledge
and some old Pākehā men who are
living in the past.”
It was the phrase “some old
Pākehā men who are living in the
past” which was the subject of
McKinlay’s complaint.
Lyall told Selwyn Times while
his comments in the meeting were
directed at Hobson’s Pledge, a
lobby group founded by former
Act leader Don Brash in 2016, he
also does not support “the old settler
mentality”.
Said McKinlay in response:
“This racist comment by the
deputy mayor was apparently
quite acceptable to Mayor Sam
Broughton and chief executive
Sharon Mason when they decided
no further action was to be taken
in respect to my complaint.”
Lyall, who would not say
whether he is planning to run
for council again in this year’s
election, told Selwyn Times
McKinlay should “put his money
where his mouth is” and run for
council himself.
The debate has sparked numerous
letters to Selwyn Times on
both sides of the issue (pages
14-15).
McKinlay also called out the
other councillors who supported
making a submission.
STRONG VIEWS: Malcolm Lyall has put up a sign outside
his home in support of the Treaty of Waitangi.
PHOTOS: DANIEL ALVEY/ GEOFF SLOAN
“Other councillors who
supported making a submission
opposing the Treaty Principles
Bill did so because of their
mistaken belief that New
Zealand is a bicultural society.
Māori and non-Māori, and cogovernance
of local government
is therefore consistent with their
understanding of the treaty.
“Equality between Māori and
non-Māori, the essence of Act’s
Treaty Principles Bill, would
see the end of co-governance
and the abandonment of special
rights and privileges for Māori,”
McKinlay said.
Lyall was aware his views on
the issue could lose him votes if
he decides to stand again, but said
he was not worried.
The majority of letters received
rejected Lyall’s comments and
opposed the council’s submission
against the bill.
Said Aylesbury resident Graham
Bethell: “Stuart McKinlay
was correct and his complaint
should have been upheld. Just
imagine if he had criticised ‘some
old Māori men for living in the
past’. All hell would have resulted,
with Lyall and Broughton being
the noisiest.”
Along with the opposition,
there was also support for Lyall
and the council.
Said Lincoln resident Ann
Judson Farr: “It was a welcome
change to read the positive
comments from Mayor Sam
Broughton.”
During the meeting in December
where Lyall made his comments,
the council debated what
would be included in its submission,
as the views of ratepayers’
had not been canvassed.
In its submission, the council
focused on how the bill would
affect its operations and
partnerships, which includes
providing a seat around the
council table for local iwi.
EARLY SURVEY results suggest
growing dissatisfaction between
Prebbleton residents and the
council.
The Prebbleton Community
Association is currently analysing
the results of a survey, carried
out at the end of last year,
to gauge the public’s needs and
whether residents still felt the
association was relevant.
Half of the responses have
been accounted for so far, with
almost all saying the association
is needed, PCA chair Jane Elms
said.
The survey has revealed dissatisfaction
with the lack of
progress over a new community
centre.
“It’s upset a lot of people,” said
Elms.
A new community centre
has been in the council’s longterm
plans since 2008, but has
continuously been put off due to
lack of funding.
Whether the centre replaces
the existing Prebbleton Hall
(above) will be dependent on
the design of the new centre,
Prebbleton Hall chair Graeme
Gemmill said.
Gemmill criticised deputy
mayor and Prebbleton resident
Malcolm Lyall for his lack of advocacy
in council for the muchneeded
community centre.
Lyall told Selwyn Times he has
tried to get a new community
centre for the past 15 years but
has not had the support of his
fellow councillors, meaning the
project has not made the list.
Gemmill said it has been frustrating
to see other townships’
projects be prioritised by council
ahead of theirs, namely Leeston’s
community centre Whata Rau
Lack of progress on new
facility frustrates residents
and Darfield’s new basketball
complex.
“We’re the third largest
township in Selwyn and we
don’t even have a building large
enough to hold the school’s final
assembly,” he said.
Lyall said it was up to the
community to decide what the
facility could include, how big
it should be and where it should
go, something he was not sure
they had done.
The council’s latest long-term
plan includes investigating a
new community centre, with
a plan to build between 2026-
2033.
In 2016, council identified five
‘fast track projects’ including a
community centre for Prebbleton.
The others were completed,
but the Prebbleton project did
not get off the ground.
In 2018, the community centre
was planned again for 2019-2021
at a cost of $5.5m.
The council’s 2021-2031 Long
Term Plan then allocated $6.3m
to build a community centre in
2025-2026.
The lack of transparency has
been especially frustrating for
the hall committee, Gemmill
said, as it has left them uncertain
about how much renovation
should be done on the current
facility.
The PCA and hall committee
is looking to move forward in
conjunction with the council,
Gemmill said.
He emphasised the
importance of being realistic
with the design of the new
centre and understands the
restrictions rate rises have had
on council decisions.
SPCA TAKES LEAD ON
DOG ATTACK
The SPCA has taken over
investigating the distressing
security camera footage of a
man violently attacking a dog
in Rolleston. Initially handled
by police, the investigation was
passed on to the SPCA last week.
Said SPCA national inspectorate
manager Alan Wilson: “We are
currently conducting inquiries
into the matter. As such, we are
at this time.” Wilson urged
CAR RECOVERED
Police have arrested two offenders
following a report of suspicious
behaviour by some quickthinking
people in a Rolleston
supermarket car park. The
arrest followed a vehicle being
stolen from Gloucester St in
Christchurch in the early hours
of Saturday morning. About
3.20pm Saturday, members of the
public spotted two people acting
suspiciously around vehicles in
the Rolleston car park. Police
were able to identify and locate
the two men involved in a stolen
vehicle nearby, and take them
into custody. The vehicle has since
been returned to its owner.
Summer programme made Arthur’s Pass the place
to be at New Year
The Arthur’s Pass community kicked off 2025
with their annual summer series of free events,
which has been running for over 50 years
and is supported by several local and
conservation organisations.
The Council’s contribution through the Selwyn
Community Fund helps cover extra costs that
continue to enhance the summer programme,
supporting the tradition that brings locals and
bach holders together over the New Year period
to explore the beauty of the Arthur’s Pass National
Park on their doorstep.
Fi Neale, event organiser for 2025 says the
programme is a great chance to remind people of
local conservation efforts around our kea, kiwi and
back country huts and share local history.
“It also gives people the opportunity to experience
the National Park with enthusiastic and
knowledgeable locals. The Community Fund is
great because it enables participants to take
part in activities with no cost and with
quality materials.”
She says this year’s programme was very
successful with lots of events that a wide variety
of people could enjoy, from guided walks to crafts
and story time.
Over 30 people attended the quiz night which
was a great event with lots of laughs and fun
prizes donated kindly by locals and from Fire
and Emergency NZ and Forest and Bird North
Canterbury. Some of the other popular events
included the alpine pirate treasure hunt, and
the miniature back country hut building.
If you’re looking for something to do over the next
New Year period, add the Arthur’s Pass summer
programme to your calendar.
Also taken were Craig’s grandfather’s
(Lindsay Welsh) medals from World War
2, Catherine’s jewellery box that contained
her father’s wedding ring, her own
engagement ring, a kotuku bone carving
given to her on her 21st birthday and a
pair of greenstone earrings.
She said her father would be angry about
the theft.
“He’d be pretty furious, not only did he
serve but when he retired he was the area
rep for the Hawke’s Bay Vietnam Association
and president of the Taradale RSA,”
she said.
The medals represented much more
than her father’s service.
“It was everything he did, the ethos
he lived by, his conduct as a soldier and
a veteran. To us, as a family, you cannot
replace that.”
Catherine said she noticed immediately
“something different” when they returned
home – some of the curtains had been
drawn. Once inside they quickly realised
there had been a burglary.
TVs had been unscrewed from walls and
left on the floor, possibly indicating the
burglar was going to return.
Said Craig: “Drawers had been turned
upside down, tools are missing, the kids’
Christmas cash – looks like stuff they can
shove in their pockets.”
They soon realised the medals were also
gone.
The emotional damage of being broken
into, particularly for their sons, was also
evident.
Catherine said it was difficult calling her
she said.
They said they’ve been lucky with support
to check in on each other if they notice
something out of place.
Said Craig: “I know how hard this is
hurting Catherine, out of everything that
was taken if Doug’s medals were returned
it would help Catherine a lot – that one
thing would make a big difference.”
Said Catherine: “The mana and tapu of
the medals is of such value that you cannot
“For us, especially the medals, there’s no
real monetary value for the thieves
and buyers, but they’re invaluable to the
ones who know and love the people who
earned them.”
Weed control clears the active part of the river channel
The Rolleston Residents
highway upgrades and flyover.
Association
chair Mark Alexander
said NZTA
would be fronting
its first meeting of
the year.
Mark
Alexander
Alexander said the meeting will
not be to re-litigate the design of
the flyover.
The meeting will be held at the
Rolleston Community Centre at
7.30pm on Monday.
The association will also have its
appeal to the Local Government
Commission about the council’s
new ward structure heard in
March.
The appeal targets the decision of
the council to not include
West Rolleston in the Rolleston
Ward, keeping it in Ellesmere
instead.
Lincoln
The Lincoln Community and
Residents’ Association will be
searching for a new chair to begin
the year.
Acting chair
Lindsay Wilson
said the group’s
first chair Vic
Wadhams has
resigned after moving
out of town.
Wilson said the
committee was
Lindsay
Wilson
working through
the process of appointing a new
chair, which would likely happen in
the next month or two.
Once it appoints a chair, it plans
to continue looking at the Lincoln
Town Centre plans.
“Most of the businesses are
still unhappy with the plans,”
Wilson said.
Wilson said the association
wants to work with the council
on the design of the plan before
the removeal of on-street car park
Polglase said it was opportunity
The trip included a visit to the
air force museum at Wigram, and
a picnic.
Leeston
The Leeston Community
Committee plans to become an
official elected
group.
Until now,
the committee
has been made
up of those left
over from the
disestablishment
of the Leeston
Town Advisory
Committee.
A public re-election meeting
is scheduled for 7.30pm on
February 17 at the Leeston Library
Community.
“We encourage anyone from the
community to come along and put
their hand up to be elected onto
the committee,” committee chair
Bryan Tubb said.
The committee hopes to elect
between five to 10 new members
to the group in an effort to take it
through the next couple of years in
a more formal and democratic way,
Tubb said.
The committee will also be looking
to recruit senior students from
Ellesmere College to get input into
future growth and direction for the
Leeston district.
The residents’ reference
THE NEW Lincoln Town
Centre is set to start with the
construction of the northern
and southern car parks next
month.
The project will get under
way after the council awarded
the contract to Fulton Hogan.
The 100 new car parks will
be situated between Lyttleton
St and Maurice St, and off
Gerald St beside Maurice St.
The council says the car
parks are designed to support
access to the town centre and
improve the availability of
parking for residents, visitors,
and businesses, enhancing
accessibility to the town’s
amenities and services.
Once the car parks have
been built the council plans to
remove about 80 angled and
on-street car parks from Gerald
St, a move that has drawn
criticism from businesses which
were concerned people would
no longer stop due to the lack of
convenience.
Construction of the car
parks is expected to take about
five months to complete.
The Lincoln Town Centre
project was confirmed through
the Long-Term Plan 2024-
PLAN: A house on Lyttleton St being demolished before Christmas to make way
for the car parks that mark the start of the Lincoln Town Centre project. Below – an
artist’s impression of what Gerald St will look like once the upgrades are complete.
2034, with funding and work
brought forward to begin in
2025.
The plan focuses on
upgrading Gerald St, creating
a refreshed town centre, with
more public space while
promoting safety for traffic.
Other work coming up in
the area includes wastewater
Readers react to deputy mayor Lyall’s
HAVING tolerated a distinct
decline in the democratic
process, and intention of our
council for some time now, I’m
shocked to see them making
political submissions on behalf of
the community they are elected
and paid to represent.
This is exactly why the discussion
the bill proposes is essential
for New Zealand to have, moving
forward with clarity to shape a
society rid of any racism.
How dare SDC submit on my
behalf, something I and many
others have done individually.
I congratulate councillors who
spoke up against the submission
but can clearly see they were
disregarded and were not about
to sway the views of Sam and
his buddies, who are pushing
hard for less regulations around
accountability and meaningful
consultation.
- Kevin Burney, Darfield
Stuart McKinlay was correct and
his complaint should have been
upheld. Just imagine if he had
criticised “some old Māori men
for living in the past”. All hell
would have resulted, with Lyall
and Broughton being the noisiest.
This would not have happened
if the council refrained from
sticking it’s nose into nationwide
politics. Council should carry out
the core duties that we pay it to
VIEWS: Last week’s article on the Treaty Principles Bill and Malcolm Lyall’s ‘Pakeha’ comment
has drawn strong responses from readers.
do – rubbish, roads and sewage,
and not misuse ratepayers money
to create a platform from which
they air their personal opinions.
By doing, so they insinuate
those they represent oppose
the Treaty Principles Bill. Does
council need reminding that
Selwyn is a solidly National
electorate with polling indicating
that its members support
Seymour’s bill?
- Graham Bethell, Aylesbury
I thoroughly agree with Geoff
Hill’s comments regarding
Mayor Sam Broughton’s political
position taken on the behalf
of ratepayers. Broughton has
absolutely no mandate to take
such a stand.
The people of Selwyn will
remember Sam Broughton’s
arrogant remarks at election
time. I sincerely hope Geoff Hill
has considered running against
Broughton. He will certainly
get my vote.
- Edward DeLilla, Rolleston
The Crown and Māori are the
only signatories of the Treaty
of Waitangi and as a treaty
partner Māori are entitled to
representation on the SDC, as is
required to comply with article 2
of Te Tiriti.
Sam Broughton’s foresight in
recognising this will allow for
good governance by the Selwyn
District Council. Ratepayers
of Selwyn could consider
compliance with the Treaty of
Waitangi as a positive factor in
Canterbury’s future and continue
voting for Sam Broughton.
- John Howes, Lincoln
Free speech is a given. Together
with actions, it enables us to assess
another’s motivations and
their attitudes.
Councillor Lyall has revealed
himself in a most unflattering
manner. That he is contemptuous
of a large proportion of the
ratepayers in Selwyn has been
clearly displayed. He compounds
his vacuity by proudly doubling
down on his rant.
Our mayor reveals his unsuitability
as a mayor by arrogantly
allowing Lyall his rant, but also
by allowing our council to speak
supposedly on our behalf, to the
Treaty Principles Bill.
Mr Mayor and your council,
tend your duties and do not allow
personal prejudices divert you
from the reasons you are elected
to tend.
‘Pakeha’ comment: SDC’s submission
It was disappointing and
surprising to read that our mayor,
deputy mayor and council boss
have taken it on themselves to
seek to influence others to their
point of view on this contentious
bill.
They have no right whatsoever
to represent ratepayers on this
issue, but of course do have a
right to make their personal
submission and that is where it
should stop. Councils should stay
out of national politics on this
issue.
Given the poor performance
of our council in almost every
respect these three individuals
would be better to focus on their
primary roles and leave the
individual ratepayers to make
their own minds up and submit
accordingly. Sadly our leaders
seem to think they know better
than everyone else and want to
foist their opinion on others.
The Coalition Government
is doing exactly what it said it
would do with this bill and would
rightly be castigated had it not
gone ahead with this process.
I encourage our council
to stick to their knitting and
improve their performance
for the sake of ratepayers, for
example the return on council
funds invested is below 5% which
is absolutely pathetic. I am an
“old grey-haired Pakeha” but I
achieve double the council level
on a conservative investment
portfolio.
- Nigel Humphries, Lincoln
In reference to the idiotic and
condescending comments from
another old Pakeha man, the
syncophantic Malcolm Lyall
who has never done anything
constructive in his time at the
Selwyn council.
The worst result has been the
apparent endorsement of his
insulting words by our mayor
“Sam”. Clearly, the culture and
mindset of this council has now
been exposed.
As to the council’s decision to
make submissions with regard
to the Treaty Principles Bill, on
whose authority does this
council presume to speak on
behalf of its employers on any
external issue?
So us ratepayers are just to sit
back and let a cabal of individuals
make decisions outside of their
core responsibilities to the
ratepayers. Surely attending to
the needs of their constituents
and listening to their concerns is
of higher priority than inserting
their personal opinions into
national and political issues.
Whilst I may, or may not, agree
with the contents of this council’s
current submission, I strongly
object to this council taking upon
itself the right to speak on behalf
of Selwyn residents without
any attempt to consult, or even
communicate its intentions.
I would urge those who think
they could make contributions
to Selwyn’s future and curb
the irresponsible spending and
arrogance of this temporary
group to step forward. They
can be assured of massive
support.
- Les Wade, Rolleston
I am writing in support of
Mr McKinley and Geoff Hill.
Councils should be apolitical.
To that end, Selwyn council had
no right to put in a submission.
I object to council straying from
their core role. Their argument
on how it effects their operation
does not wash. Mr Broughton
and Mr Lyall will not be getting
my vote at the next elections.
- C Hay, Prebbleton
Stuart McKinley’s complaint
about the comments made by
the deputy mayor about those
who are in favour of the Treaty
Principles Bill should have been
dismissed.
Mr McKinley is quite incorrect
when he says that many other
residents would be offended.
I am a 61-year-old Pakeha
woman and I agree 100% with
Mr Lyall’s comments. I have also
made a submission opposing the
bill.
Hobson’s Pledge is a racist,
backward looking group who are
attempting to stoke division.
I applaud Malcolm Lyall in
standing up for what he believes.
The council is quite correct to
make a submission opposing the
bill, and I congratulate them for
doing so.
- Jillian Matchett, Darfield
It was a welcome change to
read the positive comments from
Mayor Sam Broughton:
“We are committed to fostering
meaningful partnerships,
grounded in dialogue, mutual
respect and shared aspirations.”
This bill undermines these
efforts by introducing changes
that are unnecessary and
unhelpful.
Partnership is central to Te
Tiriti. The absence of meaningful
engagement with Māori during
the development of the bill is
concerning and undermines the
Crown’s obligations under Te
Tiriti.
The unilateral approach
taken by this bill fails to respect
the principles of partnership,
participation and protection.
Broughton said the bill
creates unnecessary uncertainty
for established legislative
frameworks like the Resource
Management Act and Local
Government Act.
Council remains committed to
fostering meaningful bicultural
relationships and supporting
positive outcomes for all our
communities.
These comments build
strength, a renewed sense of wellbeing,
and hope for our shared
future.
In this uncertain world with
the climate, survival for people
and animals, rising costs, loss of
jobs, it means so much to have a
council which supports people
working together for everyone’s
benefit.
Bravo Mayor Sam Broughton,
Selwyn District Council. Honour
Te Tiriti.
Great choices for a great future
Choosing the right early learning
environment for your child will be one of
the most important decisions you make.
Find the place that best suits and enhances
your child’s personality, strengths,
wellbeing and social skills, and they will be
well set up for education… and for life.
Fortunately for Selwyn residents, as our
district continues to grow, so does the wide
range of Early Childhood Education (ECE)
options available here. You now have an
amazing range of approaches and styles to
choose from, to suit your outlook and the
personality of your child.
What will you find when you start
visiting these centres? Well, a special
feature of many Selwyn ECE centres is
their focus on outdoor education and play.
Many offer stunning natural environments
and opportunities that just wouldn’t be
possible in more urban settings.
There’s also, often, a strong focus on
cultural connection. It’s a great opportunity
for your kid, and the whole family, to be
introduced to the language, festivities,
music, practices – and food! – of all the
different cultures making up our society.
ECE nationwide follows a curriculum
called Te Whāriki, meaning “the woven
mat”. The concept is that partnerships
are woven together between teachers,
parents and families, bringing all parts
of a child’s world into their care and
learning. So it’s essential that you go and
visit centres before making your selection,
because the relationships and connection
Selwyn Early Learning
ANd Childcare
that you feel with the place need to be
real. All the centres welcome visitors by
arrangement, so see the contact details in
our comprehensive listings.
With all the expertise and dedication of
our Selwyn early learning teachers, kaiako
and educators, and the exciting range of
cutting-edge practice that happens here,
you can trust that your kiddie will be in
the best hands.
As you may know, early learning is
not compulsory in New Zealand, but
evidence strongly shows great benefits.
Across NZ, tamariki typically attend early
learning services for around 20 to 22
Melodies is a boutique, privately-owned preschool in the heart of Lincoln offering
a low child-to-teacher ratio with a maximum of 8:1, well below the Ministry
regulation of 10:1. We have chosen to limit our licence to just 34 children, to
allow for an intimate and child-centred approach that readily adapts to the
learning and needs of each child.
Situated in a beautifully renovated house, Melodies offers an exciting,
welcoming, light-filled – and clean – setting, surrounded by a large outdoor
play space. In our “Home away from Home” environment, we create a culture
of warmth, care and respect.
We are “Melodies” by nature as well as name. Every day your child will enjoy
music and dance sessions in addition to a full range of curriculum activities.
Music is a huge part of a child’s development, it is also a wonderful vehicle for
other learning to take place, such as building confidence, developing language,
friendships and team work as well as physical movement skills and creativity.
Melodies Preschool has an incredible team of qualified teachers, passionate about
providing the best possible early learning experiences and care. Our teachers provide
opportunities for children to explore a rich curriculum that lays the foundation for a
life of learning that inspires critical thought, inquiring minds and creativity.
Responsive, reciprocal, and respectful relationships between teachers, children and
whānau are at the heart of all our practices.
We would love you and your family to call or pop in to view our facilities and meet
our wonderful staff. Contact Nicky at 03 325 2227 or info@melodiespreschool.co.nz.
“We looked at several different preschools before we made the decision to send our son
to Melodies. What influenced our decision was Melodies’ low child-to-teacher ratio and
the supportive, highly professional, and passionate team. We are very happy with our
decision. Our little boy is thriving in the Melodies environment, and we cannot speak highly
enough of Nicky and her team for the high level of quality care and support they provide
for our wee one. We have no hesitation in recommending Melodies to other parents.”
Your child is unique and valued at Puanga Kākaho
At Puanga Kākaho, relationships are the heart of what we do: between tamariki, whānau,
kaiako (teachers) and nature. We believe that our preschool is a home away from home filled
with love and respect. With highly trained and experienced kaiako we provide our learners
with positive, equitable opportunities for learning, guided by the principles of Te Whāriki,
Emmi Pikler and Reggio Emilia.
Each child needs a healthy self-identity and deserves to feel valued in society. Our proven
strong whānau connections allow us to holistically support each child, enhancing their mana
and affirming themselves as a valued, capable, competent learner, participating in routines,
events and celebrations.
Our focus on the outdoors promotes physical, social and emotional growth, encouraging
children to take risks and learn freely in our expansive, natural outdoor environment, embracing
nature and learning to care for the natural world.
Remaining steadfast in our commitment to provide a high-quality learning environment and
embracing the belief that the environment is the third teacher, we have recently carried out major
renovations. Our entire centre has been upgraded, with the addition of beautiful new rooms and
expansive re-designed outdoor play spaces, created to help children flourish and develop.
We’ve created dedicated spaces tailored to each age group: infants, toddlers, younger
preschoolers, and older preschoolers. These spaces are designed to be developmentally
appropriate, ensuring that each child can play and learn in an environment that supports their
growth and helps them achieve the best possible outcomes during their time with us.
Contact us to find out more about our new modern, purpose-built learning spaces.
Burnham Country Montessori – the best of the country so close to town
Burnham Country Montessori has to be seen to be believed.
Within a short ten minute drive from Rolleston, one of Selwyn’s
largest outdoor playground and natural environments awaits,
along with bright and well-resourced classrooms, caring
teachers, and kids having hands-on fun in all manner of settings.
We can’t wait to show you!
Please visit!
Burnham Country Montessori continues to go from strength to strength.
With “new” ownership in place for over a year now, the ever-deepening
commitment and energy of the owners and staff is infectious. Please
contact us anytime and arrange a visit – you really have to experience this
place for yourselves. You will love it, your children will love it!
Our country setting
We provide a unique country and farm
environment for children to explore
and discover as they start to develop
a sense of wonder and make sense
of the world around them. Our large
slice of rural land is just 5km outside
Rolleston and a short distance from
Lincoln and the Burnham Military
Camp. The large, open and wellresourced
playgrounds have native
plantings, vegetable gardens, and
large decked areas for the children
and their families/whānau to enjoy. It is
one of the largest natural, aesthetically
pleasing outdoor playgrounds in
Selwyn.
When you visit, you’ll see kids
interacting with and learning to
respect nature… gardening among
our vegetable gardens and fruit trees,
practising practical coordination skills
like hammering a nail, and even doing
the weeding! All the outdoor activities
are fun, and well managed for safety.
Well-resourced classrooms
Our classrooms are equally
inspirational. Step inside and you’ll see
bright, fun and well-resourced facilities.
The children are encouraged to use all
their senses and natural inquisitiveness
to help with their pre-reading and
writing skills. As they become ready,
we guide them through all aspects
of the Montessori programme,
including practical life skills, sensorial
development, language and reading,
mathematical understanding, music,
movement and cultural activities.
Qualified, caring Montessori staff
Many of our core teaching staff have
been an extended part of Selwyn
families for nearly 15 years now.
They facilitate the children’s play
experiences to support each child in
their individual learning journey. Our
aim is to foster each child’s potential,
while assisting children to better
understand, express and regulate their
emotions and social interactions.
Connection with whānau
It’s crucial for us to link family with everything that is happening with
children. From the first settling-in visit, your child is part of the Burnham
Country Montessori family, and staff will talk to you about your child’s
routines, needs and interests. Each classroom has a designated head
teacher and staffing team, so you always have a direct line of contact.
Sustainability
We are committed to teaching children how to care for and respect our
environment. Our multiple sustainability measures are detailed on the
website, and cover all aspects of classroom, facilities and consumables
management and nature.
Come for a visit, we would love to see you.
HOME PROFESSIONALS
In a twitter about birds
The mild winter just passed has left
its mark in one regard – birdlife has
increased, across Selwyn. While that
sounds charming, if birds are nesting in
your roof and guttering you’re probably
seeing their mess on your walls, windows
and car, freshly renewed most days.
It’s important to realise there will also
be consequences you can’t see.
If your spouting is blocked by the
results of bird activity, you will see it
overflowing. What you can’t see is the
back of the spouting, where it is attached
to the bargeboard. The spouting is
lower at the back, so damage will also
be happening here. When spouting and
downpipes become blocked, flooding into
the eaves and soffit (overhanging section
of roof), and from there, into the house, is
a common – and costly – consequence.
Installing Gumleaf Gutter Guard
offers immediate protection against
birds nesting in your roof. It has a
lesser known characteristic – birds just
don’t like standing on it! It feels flat and
unnatural to them, unlike branches or
the unprotected shapes of your roof and
guttering. Since they don’t like to perch
there, they won’t nest there – in fact they
will leave your roof entirely alone and
search for a more amenable location.
Couple that with the multiple other
benefits of gutter guards, which keep out
everything from leaf litter to hail to snow
and even rats, and you’ll see that having
these guards installed is a huge benefit.
Quite simply, they extend the life of the
spouting to the life of the roof.
Gumleaf Gutter Guard was developed
in Australia more than 20 years ago, and
has been providing a quality and effective
solution in New Zealand for the last
decade. Company owner Rohan Rudd
offers great customer service and speedy
turnaround. He is available Monday to
Saturday to speak to customers who call,
customers requesting a quote receive it
within 24 hours, and Rohan says he will
“go anywhere to provide a quote”. Rohan
is happy to install the guards, although
the ease of the design is such that the
installation is 100% DIY-friendly.
Thanks to Gumleaf ’s partnership with
Alps Continuous Spouting, you can
now access a coordinated design and
install of any aspect of quality spouting
and guttering, Gumleaf gutterguarding,
fascia, downpipes and any other weather
protection that you may need.
So contact Gumleaf Gutter Guard today,
not only to protect your spouting, eaves
and house, but to keep those pesky birds
away.
Town and Country Gates:
transform your look for 2025
Town and Country Gates specialises
in the design and manufacture of quality
aluminium gates, powdercoated to your
choice of colour and finish. Demands for
services are high, so if you’re considering
transforming the look of your property in
2025, this is a great time to reach out.
These gates can range in size from
driveway to garden gate to poolside. An
amazing selection of styles is available,
from ornate to simple to traditional
to classic to modern. They will even
custom design a gate to your personal
specifications and tastes.
Town and Country Gates also offers a
beautiful selection of gates and fences in
steel and timber, including aluminium
gates with wood infill. Styles include
louvred, slat and open rail.
Check out the beautiful photos on the
website to marvel at just how many
types of style are available. While
you’re there, have a play with the
“Gate Visualiser” tool, where you
can pick a style then select from the
attractive range of colours.
Installation is also an essential part
of the service, and can be designed
to meet your needs. Perhaps you
have a priority on privacy, or on
security. Or perhaps the area to be
gated is at a tricky size or angle.
Installation options include sliding,
cantilever, bi-fold, automated,
keypads or lock latches, and security
audio and video intercoms.
Not only providing new, Town
and Country Gates is a one-stop
shop for all things gate, whether
they installed it or not. Repairs
and welding needed? No problem.
Already like your gates but want
them automated? Automation
systems can be fitted retrospectively,
just ask the experts.
In its 21st year of operation, Town
and Country Gates is thrilled to now
be fully operational from its purposebuilt
workshop in Rolleston Izone.
It’s testament to this family business’s
became a necessity, and they are now
better equipped than ever to supply
stunning gates and fences to properties
across Canterbury.
The Outdoor Space: helping your
January transition
The garden is telling us it’s summer, but
the festive season has passed and we’re no
longer so carefree – responsibilities are
starting to creep back into people’s lives.
Whether it’s an imminent return to work,
university or school, or whether the school
holidays have really been dragging on a
bit too long by now, one way or another,
people are starting to wake back up to the
real-life things they have to do.
One of these things is still gardening.
This is where The Outdoor Space can help.
Did you know that The Outdoor Space
can maintain your new or existing garden,
whether as a one-off before a special
event, or weekly, fortnightly or monthly
as required. These services
include weeding, spraying,
pruning, mowing and
fertilising, and are much
appreciated in this timeprecious
age.
Lawns are a particular
specialism, and often
need additional help at
this stage of summer. The
lawn maintenance support
offered includes any aspects
of mowing, aeration,
dethatching, leaf clearance,
feeding, and control of
weeds, fungus and pests,
that you require. Hand the
hot and hard work
over to others!
If watering has become a chore, The
Outdoor Space can install unobtrusive
irrigation systems to keep your garden
flourishing. It supplies and installs manual,
fully automatic and even wifi systems
that clients can operate with ease. This
specialism means that planting is possible
even at the height of summer, supported
with the installation of a targeted dripline
irrigation system. And yes, the team
gives quality advice and guidance on the
plantings too.
Aaron and his team have been creating
magic in Selwyn’s gardens since 2009.
The Outdoor Space is family owned and
operated, based in Rolleston and
working across the district.
Landscape design, paving, concrete,
irrigation, new lawns, planting, fences,
water features, decks, outdoor kitchens,
pergolas with covered roofs and roll
down blinds, screening fences to block
out wind, outdoor fires, and more…
The Outdoor Space can design and install
all these aspects for you.
Keep the carefree days of your holiday
season lasting a bit longer… contact The
Outdoor Space for a free quote today.
Enhance your property – and your life!
There are few treats as luxurious as
enjoying a pool in your own backyard. Be
it for relaxation, health, or the pleasure of
bringing family and friends together in
a fun and safe environment, there are so
many ways to enjoy your very own pool.
Not to mention the extra value it adds to
your property.
If you’re interested in enhancing your
life in this way, reach out to Lagoon
Pools, a locally owned and operated
swimming pool supplier and installer. The
husband-wife team of Julie and Warren
Hastings has been working together for
over 30 years, making outdoor living
dreams come true for homeowners across
Canterbury.
Julie and Warren provide a professional
and customer-focused service and say
there really is a pool for any site. They
install pools in sizes to suit both small and
large sections, ranging from 2.9m metres
to 12 metres in length with a variety of
widths, colours and shapes.
Choose the type of pool that best suits
you and your loved ones. Are benches
within the pool a pleasant option for
relaxation, or are you all about the
unobstructed swimming corridor? All
pools come with colour-changing lights,
and additional features can include
fountains, spa jets and swim jets.
Lagoon Pools is proud to hold the
Selwyn, Christchurch and Waimakariri
area dealerships for the Leisure Pools
range of 100 per cent composite fibreglass
swimming pools. The technology
is cutting edge, deploying patented
Composite Armour innovation and
patent-pending full vinyl ester
resin construction.
You can rest assured with the quality
of your investment – every swimming
pool comes with the lifetime structural
warranty and the lifetime structural
osmosis warranty.
It takes around five days to install
a pool and the finishing touches can
take from four weeks to a few months,
depending upon the design. Choose
from a variety of cover roller systems. In
an additional service much appreciated
by its customers, not only does Lagoon
Pools install the pool, it can also organise
the complete package including paving,
decking, landscaping and fencing, to
ensure your entire pool area
looks amazing.
The continued popularity of enjoying
a pool in your own backyard has led to
huge demand for the company’s services.
“We suggest booking in your pool project
well in advance to make sure your dream
comes true,” says Julie.
HOME PROFESSIONALS
We help houses get ready for sale
Are you thinking about selling your
house, but the thought of getting it ready
for sale is overwhelming? Is full home
styling too expensive or impractical for
your family?
The homeproud is a new Selwyn
business bringing affordable styling to
homeowners. We work with our clients
to create the best version of their house
for sale – using their own furniture along
with our accessories and signature
style magic.
And…families don’t need to move out
or pay a fortune for fancy furniture hire.
What we do
We know home buyers want to see
uncluttered, warm, and inviting spaces
and that’s our jam. We work closely with
homeowners to re-imagine their home
using what they already have.
First, we remove family clutter to
create clear, calm spaces that appeal to
buyers. Then we reconfigure furniture
to make the most of each space - we
re-arrange (and sometimes remove)
furniture to create a warm and welcoming
atmosphere. And finally, we accessorise
because sometimes it’s the little things
that have the biggest impact! We provide
the cushions, throw blankets, vases, art
work and flowers to bring home the
style magic!
Our styling plans
We style homes for real
estate photography and
up to four open homes.
We style in person for the photography
session and the first few open homes,
then we provide a personalised look book
to show homeowners how to achieve the
same results.
Our styling plans start from $650
for the declutter, reconfigure, and
accessorising of the main rooms of a
standard house. This price includes our
styling, a personalised look book, our
accessories, and fresh flowers.
Who we are
We’re a local mum and daughter team
who LOVE moving furniture, making
gorgeous beds, and sprinkling accessories
- it’s our love language! And we get how
hard it is to see the wood for the trees
when you’re faced with creating calm
spaces from years of family living
and being.
We can’t guarantee a home sale but we
can make sure your home presents the
very best version of itself to buyers.
Find out more at thehomeproud.co.nz,
Enjoy the fruits
(and veges) of
your labour
Keep on top of indoor
plants and your garden
in summer – and tuck
into its bounty as fruit
and veges ripen
Houseplants
January is a difficult month
for houseplants, as many people
head away. It is important
to understand the needs of
your houseplants – watering,
preferred light conditions,
and nutritional requirements.
Clean leaves with a moist
sponge and remove any dead
leaves or flowers. Remember
the bathroom, with its high
humidity, can revive ailing
houseplants.
Vegetable garden
Almost all summer vegetables
can be harvested this month,
including beans, carrots,
eggplants, beetroot, cucumbers,
courgettes, peas, potatoes,
radish, and sweetcorn. Keep your
vegetable garden’s productivity
going through till the end
of summer with succession
planting – regularly plant fast
maturing vegetables like dwarf
beans, lettuce, and radish.
Flowering annuals
January is an excellent month
for these plants, providing
dazzling displays of flowers.
Regular maintenance includes,
‘dead-heading’, weeding,
watering and in some instances,
replanting. Summer flowering
annuals to plant include alyssum,
cornflower, cosmos, marigolds,
petunias, salvias, poppies,
portulacas, and zinnias.
TUCK IN: Enjoy summer veges straight from your garden, such as sweet corn.
PHOTOS: GETTY
Strawberries and
raspberries
Strawberry plants will continue
to crop throughout January.
Maintain your weeding, and if
you haven’t done it yet, apply
fresh mulch around the plants of
pea straw or clean crushed bark.
Raspberry fruiting will taper off
towards the end of the month
coinciding with rapid growth of
canes. Prune excess canes and tie
down new season canes which
will provide next season’s fruits.
Fruit trees
Time to start harvesting
stone fruit – apricots, cherries,
peaches, and plums. The first
apples ripen towards the end of
the month. Give your fruit trees
a deep watering two to three
times a week during the growing
season.
Herbs
As herbs thrive in the heat,
January and February are prolific
months in the herb garden.
Trim regularly to maintain fresh
growth and to prevent flowering.
Plant additional herbs where
supply is short.
Child friendly decorating ideas
Having children does not mean that you
have to sacrifice enjoying a stylish home. It’s
just a matter of adapting your design ideas
to cater for the ages and stages along the
way.
Some simple adjustments can make a
huge difference whether it is choosing
furniture without sharp edges or opting for
paint types that are easy to clean.
Painting a room is often the cheapest
way to refresh and update your look and
children’s rooms are no exception. Some
companies such as New Zealand-based
Resene has specific ranges for children
featuring bright, bold colours and some
amazing metallic and blackboard options.
Changing up the rooms as your children
grow can be as simple as adding desks, bean
bags, posters or bunting. Or let them choose
their own colour scheme – what can go
wrong?
Purposefully selecting coffee and dining
tables without sharp edges is one way of
reducing injuries – an ottoman makes a
good option for a coffee table - but there are
also other considerations when you have
children such as storage options.
Cupboards with doors are useful for
hiding a whole range of things from toys
and games or containers that can fit under
the bed – or choose a divan that already
has drawers underneath. Using buckets
or boxes with pictures for each type of
toy will assist even the little ones with
tidying up.
Children’s artwork can make great
cost-effective additions to your décor.
Placing them in similar frames works
well or have them hanging from a
bunting using pegs.
Invest in furniture that will cope with
everything that children could possibly
throw at it and maybe stay away from
anything white that could stain easily.
Leather is easy to clean and other child
friendly fabrics include micofibre
which is stain resistant and comes in
different textures. Another option is
wool which is easy to spot clean and it’s
less susceptible to pilling, snagging, and
wrinkling than other fabrics. Slip covers
are also a great idea when you have
children.
So with a little thought your décor
can be stylish and child-friendly at the
same time.
Selling your home?
Potential buyers are likely to be
living in your neighbourhood, it’s
an area that they already love
and are actively seeking to stay
in. That’s why it makes sense to
advertise your property in the
Selwyn Property Guide.
For cost effective, highly targeted advertising
that delivers results, contact a local
Prepare your home for 2025
19
You’ve seen in the New Year, finished
all the Christmas treats, taken down the
Christmas tree, and are now back to work.
Make your home a clean and organised
space so you’ll be ready to embrace the
year’s opportunities. Here are some tips
to get your home prepared for the year
ahead:
Declutter and Organise
Start decluttering every room, but tackle
them one at a time. Sort items you no
longer use or need into donate or discard
piles, including clothes, expired pantry
items, unused gadgets, or home décor you
wish to change. Organise your remaining
belongings using storage bins and labels
to keep things tidy.
Deep Clean
A thorough cleaning is a good way to
reset and set the tone for keeping your
home for the rest of the year. Choose a
few tasks to complete at a time. Dust,
vacuum, and clean skirting boards, ceiling
fans, and appliances, and don’t forget
those hard-to-reach areas, such as the
tops of cupboards and bookcases. Clean
your windows inside and out. It’s also a
good time to clean drapes, curtains, rugs,
and carpets.
Rearrange furniture
Give your room a mini makeover by
rearranging the furniture. Consider the
room’s function, how it will be used, and
how people will move through it. Your
largest piece of furniture is often the focal
point, so place this furniture first, but
ensure its size is appropriate for the space.
You can help open up space and make
it easier to move around by removing
unnecessary furniture.
Refresh Décor
After putting away your Christmas
decorations, it may be time to freshen up
a space. Painting can change the look and
feel of a room, and it doesn’t need to be
the entire room. Consider painting trims,
a ceiling, or a focal wall. An inexpensive
refresh could be restyling a coffee table
with a collection of books, a candle, a
sculpture, a lamp, or flowers. Adding
plants or updating pillows, throws,
window treatments, and rugs can provide
a fresh look without breaking the bank.
Inspect and Maintain
Check smoke alarms, carbon monoxide
detectors, and home appliances to ensure
they work well. Get into those jobs you’ve
