The Legacy and Purpose of ACAAGS
The Associa+on for the Concerns of African American Graduate Students
(ACAAGS) is unlike any other organiza+on on the campus of North
Carolina State University. ACAAGS provides a unique opportunity for
African-­‐American graduate students and students throughout the African
Diaspora at NC State to socialize, network, and support one another
through the graduate school process. Membership in ACAAGS also
provides an outlet for graduate students to voice their concerns about the
academic process, create a network of support from fellow students and
increase involvement in the local African-­‐American Community. Many
African-­‐American students who aIend mee+ngs have expressed a sense
of isola+on in being one of few minority students in their program. For
this reason, it is impera+ve that we con+nue the legacy of the
organiza+on and support the many ways in which it provides solace for
African American students at NCSU.

The ACAAGS Awards Program
For over 26 years, ACAAGS has honored the academic and
leadership achievements of African-­‐American graduates,
undergraduates, faculty and staff. Each year ACAAGS gathers the
university’s top achievers at the graduate and undergraduate level
to acknowledge their great contribu+ons to the intellectual effort at
NCSU. Students with a 3.0 and above G.P.A. are recognized by a
representa+ve from their college with a cer+ficate congratula+ng
them on being at the top of their class. Faculty and staff are
acknowledged for helping to create a suppor+ve environment for
African American students and assis+ng in the university’s effort to
support diversity. The ACAAGS banquet plays a central role in
recognizing and celebra+ng the achievements of African American
students and faculty at NC State. The banquet also enhances the
visibility of ACAAGS as a reputable organiza+on on our campus and
in the community.
