MAUGER DOES IT AGAIN!
Mayor insists removal
of trailer no PR stunt
• By Daniel Alvey
NO PUBLICITY stunts to see
here.
That’s what Mayor Phil
Mauger says after he shifted
an abandoned and graffitied
trailer unit a day before he
launched his campaign for
re-election.
Not for the first time,
Mauger took matters into his
own hands, moving the trailer
unit in Aranui at the weekend
after eight months of residents’
complaints of inaction by the
city council.
Cuthberts Rd residents said
the trailer unit was an eyesore
and blocked their view.
So was this a back to the future
headline-grabber leading
into an election?
In 2020, when he was the
Burwood Ward councillor,
he took matters into his own
hands, digging a trench to
solve flooding on Pages Rd,
Bexley, a problem that had
gone unfixed for 10 years. He
was fined $300 in 2021.
He received a lot of publicity
and kudos. He ran for mayor
the following year.
Also in 2020, Mauger fixed
a section of potholes along
Birchfield Ave, Dallington.
Ballantynes
fire plaques
stolen from
memorial
will be
replaced
STOLEN PLAQUES from some
of Christchurch’s worst tragedies
will be replaced.
Twenty-three of the 41 individual
bronze plaques for victims
of the Ballantynes fire on November
18, 1947, were stolen over
the weekend from Ruru Lawn
Cemetery in Bromley.
One row of the memorial had
been completely stripped by
vandals.
At least seven plaques from
wooden benches throughout the
cemetery were also targeted –
some of which were left damaged
by the removal process.
City council head of parks Rupert
Bool said the theft had been
reported to police and the plaques
would be replaced.
“The council is concerned about
the disappearance of historic
plaques, which commemorate
significant events and individuals
that have shaped our city.”
Bool said the council “is looking
at new ways to deter thefts”.
The Ballantynes memorial
was built by the city council to
remember those who perished in
the fire.
The thefts continue a trend
of plaques disappearing from
cemeteries and other historic sites
in Christchurch.
SIMON BARNETT is back on
the airwaves at More FM.
Barnett returned as host of
the More FM breakfast show on
Monday morning. He spent 20
years on More FM before he left
the station in 2018.
His return comes
after Barnett’s wife Jodi
died peacefully at the couple’s
Christchurch home in October
2023 after a five-and-a-half-year
battle with brain cancer.
Jodi had undergone four
brain surgeries, chemotherapy
and radiation treatment since
April 2018, when she suffered
a seizure out of the blue at
home.
Barnett told Your Weekend
his decision to return to radio
was part of his healing process.
“This is a very intentional
decision on my part, I want to
find joy again in my life . . . my
job is to try and make people’s
“The thing in the sadness is
when you find the moment of
joy, you really celebrate that.”
Barnett told Your Weekend
his return to More FM felt
like coming “home”.
He has rejoined colleagues,
including Lana Cochrane-
Searle, Adam Percival, and
Paul Ego.
“There’s this lovely sense of a
city coming to life with breakfast
radio. The city is waking up
and you are a part of it,” he said.
“Truly, it sounds like a
cliche but for me it will be like
walking in the front door of
the family home after doing my
OE for a few years . . . kicking
off the shoes, putting on my
lounge pants, jumping up
on the couch and putting on
Netflix! It just feels right! I love
this radio station and what it
represents.”
IF YOU WERE in the United
These days, he’s a bit of a legend
at city council group fitness
classes where he’s taught for the
past 14 years.
“I’ve been teaching group fitness
since 1990 and was previously
a triathlete, motorcross rider,
footballer and golfer,” he said.
“But I started out aerobics attending
conventions overseas in
the late ‘80s and thought ‘I could
do that’ even though I had no
prior experience. I then actually
entered an aerobics championship
placed second.
Is this NZ’s favourite suburb?
• By Jack Ward
SOUTHSHORE doesn’t have a
pub, cafe or dairy – yet it has still
been nominated as one of New
Zealand’s favourite suburbs.
It is in the running for Trade
Me Property’s inaugural people’s
choicest award.
But there could be a problem
– there are reports of swarms of
midges invading the area.
But Ian Campbell, 80, who has
lived in the suburb for 45 years,
says this is not correct.
He has not had any issues
with midges in the area or at his
favourite spots – the estuary and
the beach.
Rockinghorse Rd renters Mark
and Jo Brokenshire love being
away from the hustle and bustle
of the city. The couple and their
two-year-old schnauzer dog,
Tanzie, have been making the
most of what the suburb has to
offer.
“It is very much a dog-walking
community. We are lucky with
the walks around and the beach.”
Carol Lawson has lived in
Southshore for 24 years.
“It’s hard to beat, the sunrise
comes out of the ocean – you
walk down from your house and
you’re in nature,” she said.
Southshore is up against
Morrinsville in Waikato and
Pāpāmoa in the Bay of Plenty for
the choicest award.
COMMUNITY: Southshore has been nominated for Trade Me Property’s inaugural people’s choicest award, despite dealing with
swarms of midges. Right – Jo and Mark Brokenshire with their dog Tanzie and Ian Campbell outside his Southshore home.
Voting is open on the TradeMe
website until February 14.
But as the suburb makes its
run for the award, Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood
Community
Board member
Alex Hewison said
he has heard about
swarms of midges
in Southshore.
Alex
Hewison
“One resident
on Heron St said
the Heron St beach
access at the top of the dunes was
bad. “And the swarms driving
between the ponds were awful.
“Literally millions of them
swarming above the plants.
“When you have a wet summer
the midges tend to come but we
haven’t seen to this extent ever in
my opinion. It’s very apocalypticlike.”
The swarms are likely being
caused by algae at the wastewater
treatment plant oxidation ponds
in Bromley.
Coastal Ward councillor
Celeste Donovan and Hewison
are working with council staff to
solve the midge problem.
“Celeste and I have been
working to pass on concerns
to staff and remain committed
to working with staff for a way
forward,” Hewison said
Donovan said the nomination
was “recognition of what many
of us know – we are living in
paradise”.
“Southshore is quite unique
with its sense of community and
sense of place.”
Almost 200 properties were
demolished in Southshore after
the February 22, 2011, earthquake.
Donovan said the award
nomination was a sign of the
suburb’s resurgence.
“People out here pulled
together after the earthquakes and
what I’ve noticed is
a continuation of
that sense of pride
and community
that is not always
recognised. This
is a special part of
Celeste
Donovan
Christchurch. We
are lucky to have
access to such a
wonderful natural environment,”
Donovan said.
It followed complaints from
nearby residents, costing his
company, Maugers Contracting
Ltd, $4000.
The work was done without
the knowledge of the city
council and came about two
months after Mauger undertook
repair works to a walkway
beneath New Brighton’s Anzac
bridge, also without city council
permission.
During the 2019 election
campaign, Mauger used a digger
to remove piles of shingle in a
car park near Bower bridge on
Wainoni Rd, which had been
there since the earthquakes,
even though the city council
planned to remove the shingle at
a later date.
Said Mauger
of the trailer
removal: “I
thought, bugger
that and borrowed
a truck
from my son-inlaw
to move the
truck away from
the homes.”
His mayoralty rival, Sara
Templeton, would not be drawn
when asked if she thought it
was a publicity stunt. She said
people would draw their own
conclusions.
“But it’s clear that had he simply
asked staff on Monday morning
he would have found out they
now had the information to be
able to move it.”
City council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said staff received
permission to tow the trailer on
Monday morning.
“Parking compliance had been
trying to obtain information
from the registered owner as
to which finance company
the trailer unit had been
surrendered to. We received
information over the weekend,
which enabled us to action the
removal of the trailer.”
Wright said it was always
going to be removed once the
required information was
obtained.
Also on Monday, Mauger
was forced to announce his
re-election bid early after
his campaign website was
accidentally made public.
“I was about a week away
from launching, but that’s
life and it’s turned out okay,”
Mauger said.
As part of his re-election
campaign, Mauger says he plans
to look at anything that would
bring down rates, including
cutting services or selling assets.
Mauger told media cutting
library and pool hours, mowing
lawns less, and adjusting rubbish
collection were discussions
that could be had to bring rates
down.
In response, Templeton said
she was not opposed to reducing
services but said it should be
something the residents had to
decide.
Templeton said her idea would
present a pick-and-choose
model, in which residents could
see the difference reducing
services would have on their
rates.
Mauger is also still interested
in exploring asset sales.
While he did not say whether
the city should sell its assets like
the airport or Lyttelton Port,
he was open to discussing the
matter.
Because Templeton sits on
the board of Christchurch City
Running champ has run every City2Surf
• By Sam Coughlan
“I DO A LOT of the hill work,
so when I come off the hills, I’m
ready to fly.
“ I’m small, but I’m very strong,
and I get my power off the hills
and doing 1kms.
“You don’t come training with
me because I don’t wait for you!”
That’s the mantra of City2Surf
stalwart John Mulvaney, who is
lining up yet again on March 16.
The 78-year-old has entered
the fun run every year since it
started in 1975 – bar 2011 when
it was cancelled following the
February earthquake and 2020
when it wasn’t held due to the
Covid-19 pandemic.
He will be one of more than
10,000 runners taking part in
this year’s CORDE City2Surf.
John will run the full 12km
course and aims to keep a good
pace, after clocking 1hr 34min
last year.
“ I’m definitely looking forward
to it. Because it’s so relaxing on
the day, there’s no pressure.”
John said his favourite aspect
of the City2Surf is the benefit it
has for himself and others.
“ It’s doing good for my health
and body, by inspiring people.
Over the years there’s been a lot
of joy in the fun runs and the
City2Surf, and the fact that I’m
out there doing it.”
John pounds the pavement for
LEGACY: John Mulvaney first competed in the City2Surf in 1975. He’s run every one since,
and will line up again this year.
hours on end nearly every day.
He has run more than 180,000
miles (nearly 290,000km) since
he started to keep logbooks in
1972.
Most cars would start to fail
at that mileage, but John is as
strong as ever.
He still competes, running
for the Christchurch Methodist
Harriers. He will be at the
New Zealand Masters Games
in Whanganui starting January
31, lining up in every possible
distance from the 60m to the
3000m.
“ I’ve always been a competitive
natured person,” he said.
“Why should I (stop)?
“I intend to be the best in New
Zealand, and all going well, there’s
no reason I shouldn’t get there.”
The throes of medals that
adorn the walls of his Dallington
home, where he lives with wife
Ann, point to the success he has
had since starting at master’s
level at 35.
While John never ran for
New Zealand – although he did
represent Canterbury in track
and cross country – he has been
involved in two of the world’s
biggest competitions.
John was a marshall for the
marathon at the Commonwealth
Games in Christchurch in 1974,
and in 2000 carried the Olympic
torch while it was in Christchurch
en route to Sydney.
“It was an honour. I never
thought I’d be doing that, you
had hundreds of people coming
out into the streets just to see
you, wish you well.
“I roughly remember I ran in
Burnside, and then I handed on
to a New Zealand rep basketball
player, but even being in the bus
with those guys, it was a buzz.”
John also ran the Sydney to
Surf in 1975. He was one of four
runners from the St Martins
Athletic and Harrier Club
who took part.
He plans to keep doing the
CORDE City2Surf as long as he
can.
“I think to myself that because
of my competitive nature, if I
wasn’t able to run the next, I
would definitely be walking. It’s
just me.”
Tsunami evacuation
plan to be rolled out
STILL GOING STRONG: John Mulvaney (front) running the
Games.
GETTING REST home
residents to safety quickly in the
event of a tsunami is a focus of a
new natural disaster evacuation
plan.
The Sumner Community
Residents’ Association has
finalised an evacuation plan,
which it will be communicating
to residents over the next two
months.
A major undersea earthquake
close to shore could trigger a
tsunami that may arrive quickly,
meaning people would need
to evacuate to higher ground
immediately.
Another focus of the plan is
to get people to cycle or walk to
higher ground, instead of taking
their cars, to avoid causing a
traffic bottlenecks.
Residents will be instructed to
get above a 20m elevation mark
on Richmond, Scarborough and
Clifton hills.
Evacuation plan organiser
Alicia Mallo said it aims to
“educate residents about how
to help neighbours who are
vulnerable, mainly elderly and
children”.
The emergency plan has been
a long running project for the
association over the past few
years.
Association chair Andrea
Davis said it has not been able
to get the plan across the line
due to a combination of those
in charge not able to take on
the workload and the issue not
being dealt with by councils.
Davis said the association is
organising vehicles and gauging
people to be volunteer drivers
to help evacuate Edith Cavell
Lifecare and Village residents.
The association has also been
given a $1500 community grant
for grab bags for Edith Cavell
that includes essential items –
such as flashlights, water, food
and medicines.
The association will also be
requesting council put up signs
on the esplanade indicating
to visitors where the nearest
evacuation zones are as well
as put markings on the hills
specifying where the point of
safety is.
The association’s next step
is to establish emergency hubs
for residents who are unable to
return to their homes following
the tsunami.
These hubs will provide
displaced people with essentials
to last them at least a couple
of days – first aid, satellite
phones, food, water. Davis
said the February 22, 2011,
earthquake made an immediate,
but temporary, impact on the
community’s readiness, but
people have become less diligent
as time has gone on.
Cathy’s Go-To for Joint Support
Cathy loves her walks, cycling,
and staying involved in local
sports.
“We became technical
officials for Tri NZ and so we
officiate at different events. I’ve
walked for years. I used to run
back in the day but I’ve never
been a particularly great runner,”
Cathy explained.
Her love for staying active
grew as her youngest child got
involved in triathlon and cycling.
“So I had to get my own bike,”
she added with a smile.
In recent years, Cathy has
taken up Pilates, finding it a bit
gentler on her body as she ages.
“The overall objective is to
try and keep healthy and supple,
which you never think is going
to be a problem when you’re
younger, but it starts to rear its
head a little.”
“I struggled a little bit and was
recommended to try Koru FX,”
she shared. Initially sceptical, she
decided to give it a go because
other options hadn’t worked for her.
“It’s just handy to be able to put on
your shoulder or your neck if you
need a bit of support.”
Cathy now uses Koru
FX proactively. “I use it in an
anticipatory way. If I’m heading
NATURAL COMFORT... Cathy explains how she uses Koru FX to stay active and keep up whilst cycling.
out on my bike, I think, ‘bother, I
haven’t put any on,’ because when
you don’t have it, you miss it and
kick yourself for not getting it,”
she admitted. “Having made sure
you’ve applied the cream before you
go definitely is a plus.”
She finds the cream particularly
beneficial for alleviating pressure
on her hands from braking and
changing gears during long rides.
“It’s always good to get a bit of
cream on there. You know it’s
giving a little bit of support just in
case.”
For those considering a natural
solution to support their joints and
muscles, Cathy recommends giving
Koru FX a try. “If someone was
looking for a product, I would say
give it a try because you don’t know
until you try something.”
But it’s not just Cathy - over
60,913 New Zealanders have
already experienced the fast-acting
comfort and support of Koru FX
Always read the label and take as directed. If symptoms persist contact your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition, Christchurch
It contains high-quality
essential oils like arnica, calendula,
War medals taken in burglary
• By Jack Ward
ALL CRAIG and Catherine
Welsh want is the return of
family heirlooms, including
war medals, taken during the
burglary of their home.
They are now scouring social
media sites, including Facebook
Marketplace, and have been in
contact with pawn shops, in the
hope they will turn up.
Their home in Rolleston was
broken into two weekends ago
when they were away on holiday.
Catherine said the burglary
was devastating.
The burglar took her late father
Corporal Doug Stanton’s military
medals. He served in Malaya,
Borneo, and Vietnam where
he was wounded in the leg on
Valentine’s Day 1968.
Also taken were Craig’s
grandfather’s (Lindsay Welsh)
medals from World War 2,
Catherine’s jewellery box that
contained her father’s wedding
ring, her own engagement ring, a
kotuku bone carving given to her
on her 21st birthday and a pair of
greenstone earrings.
She said her father would be
angry about the theft.
“He’d be pretty furious, not
only did he serve but when
he retired he was the area rep
for the Hawke’s Bay Vietnam
Association and president of the
UPSET: Craig and Catherine
military medals which
were stolen. If you can
help find them, email
barry@starmedia.kiwi
PHOTO: BARRY CLARKE
Taradale RSA,” she said.
The medals represented much
more than her father’s service.
“It was everything he did, the
ethos he lived by, his conduct as a
soldier and a veteran. To us, as a
family, you cannot replace that.”
Catherine said she noticed
immediately “something
different” when they returned
home – some of the curtains had
been drawn. Once inside they
quickly realised there had been a
burglary.
TVs had been unscrewed
from walls and left on the floor,
possibly indicating the burglar
was going to return.
Said Craig: “Drawers had been
turned upside down, tools are
missing, the kids’ Christmas cash
– looks like stuff they can shove
in their pockets.”
They soon realised the medals
were also gone.
The emotional damage of being
broken into, particularly for their
sons, was also evident.
Catherine said it was difficult
calling her brother about the loss
of the medals. “In our family,
medals are passed to the eldest
sibling – they are not given, they
are entrusted to – was hard calling
my brother in Australia and
hearing his voice crack,” she said.
They said they’ve been lucky
with support from neighbours,
and urged people to check in on
each other if they notice something
out of place.
Said Craig: “I know how hard
this is hurting Catherine, out
of everything that was taken if
Doug’s medals were returned it
would help Catherine a lot – that
one thing would make a big difference.”
Said Catherine: “The mana
and tapu of the medals is of
such value that you cannot buy
and sell. “For us, especially the
medals, there’s no real monetary
value for the thieves and buyers,
but they’re invaluable to the ones
who know and love the people
who earned them.”
THE HUMAN Rights Commission
has received complaints over a music
event that used a “racist” tiered ticketing
structure which allowed people of Māori
and Pasifika descent to buy cheaper
tickets.
But the Christchurch-based collective
behind the event – which says it’s dedicated
to creating safe, inclusive spaces for
Māori and Pasifika communities – says
the ticketing structure was designed to
“remove barriers for indigenous people”
and recognised systemic inequalities that
have historically affected Māori and Pasifika
communities.
Brown Town Ōtautahi was set to host
‘Waves: Sunday Session’ at bar Muy Muy
on Sunday – an event it said would be an
afternoon of “reckless abandonment under
the summer sun”.
But concerns were raised shortly after
over the racially-tiered ticketing Brown
Town adopted for the event.
Tickets – sold via Australian ticketing
platform Humanitix – were listed at three
different price points: “Early bird (for
all tangata): $15, tangata moana (for our
Māori and Pacific tangata): $20 and tangata
tiriti (for our allies): $30.”
A commission spokesperson confirmed
it had received 13 complaints about the
event, but it could not provide any further
details because of the Privacy Act.
after complaints
Race Relations Commissioner Melissa
Derby said she encouraged all people to
use approaches that “promote positive race
relations and enhance harmonious relations”
for all people in New Zealand.
“While recognising the event organisers
were well-intentioned in aiming to increase
accessibility for their communities,
there are alternative, non-discriminatory
avenues which could also achieve the same
outcome without the risk of perpetuating
negative stereotypes about particular communities,”
Derby said.
The wording on the ticketing options
has since been updated to “Early bird: $15,
alofa access: $20, and ally access: $30.”
Creative New Zealand, which granted
Brown Town $35,000 last year as part of its
Creative Impact Fund (Pacific Arts) said it
was not aware of the tiered ticket pricing
for this event.
MUIKA DODD has literally run
off to join the circus.
Dodd, 17, is the youngest
performer in Circus Shenanigans,
which will make its debut
appearance at the World Buskers
Festival, starting tomorrow.
The festival will be a new experience
for the entire cast.
“It’s going to be difficult, it’s
definitely a new experience, and I
think I’ll enjoy it,” Dodd said.
Apart from collecting tips from
the audience after the show, Dodd
is looking forward to memorising
a script, experiencing live crowd
participation and bringing an
energy to match them.
She describes Circus Shenanigans
as lighthearted fun for the
whole family, from juggling and
darts to daring aerialist acts, where
performers drop from the roof of
the theatre.
As part of the group’s performance,
Dodd will be doing an
aerial rope and hand balancing act
at the buskers festival on Sunday
at the Roy Stokes Hall in New
Brighton.
Circus Shenanigans will also be
performing at the Arts Centre on
February 1.
Dodd has always had an affinity
for the circus. Growing up she
would watch her mum Teila teach
the art form at the Christchurch
Circus Trust, and through that,
developed her own passion.
She started her own training
when she was seven and her first
performance was for the circus
trust with a troupe of teenagers,
at just 10.
“I just love being on the stage.”
When performing, Dodd
says she gets wrapped up in the
intricate routines. Constantly
thinking about the next steps can
be stressful but it does not take
anything away from her love of
performing.
Dodd said the atmosphere provided
by the audience gives the
performers something extra.
“I think the louder the crowd is,
the easier it is to perform.”
While the performance on
stage is important for Dodd, the
feeling of family that develops off
it is a big part of her enjoyment.
“You spend a lot of time
rehearsing with these people,
and you just get really close with
everyone.”
Dodd finished up at Hagley
College at the end of last year and
is committed to turning her passion
for circus into a career.
She trains three to four times
a week, with each session lasting
three to four hours.
“I try to train as much as
possible, because it’s my dream to
perform circus overseas.
“It’s next level, so I’m definitely
trying to get up there,” said Dodd.
‘Old Pākehā men’ comment backlash
• By Daniel Alvey
THE CANTERBURY deputy
mayor at the centre of a storm over
his “old Pākehā men living in the
past” comment continues to be
unrepentant.
Selwyn District Council’s Malcolm
Lyall has received a public
backlash over his comment made
during a council debate on the
Treaty Principles Bill.
Lyall called supporters of the bill
“old Pākehā men living in the
past”.
That led to Lincoln resident
Stuart McKinlay complaining
to the council, calling Lyall’s
remarks “racist” and “offensive”.
Lyall was unapologetic about
the complaint, which was
dismissed, saying it was “a badge
of honour”.
Now McKinlay has responded,
calling Lyall’s response “stupid”.
“This ridiculous statement by
Malcolm Lyall coupled with his
lack of respect for ratepayers who
elected him to represent their
interests, suggests he is not fit
to hold the office of councillor,’
McKinlay told The Star.
During the debate, Lyall
said the council must continue
supporting the treaty, “and not
bow down to the pressure of
Hobson’s Pledge and some old
Pākehā men who are living in
the past.”
It was the phrase “some old
Pākehā men who are living in
the past” which was the subject
of McKinlay’s complaint.
Lyall told The Star while his
comments in the meeting were
directed at Hobson’s Pledge, a
lobby group founded by former
Act leader Don Brash in 2016, he
also does not support “the old
settler mentality”.
Said McKinlay in response:
“This racist comment by the
deputy mayor was apparently
quite acceptable to Mayor Sam
Broughton and chief executive
Sharon Mason when they
decided no further action was
to be taken in respect to my
complaint.”
Lyall, who would not say
whether he is planning to run
for council again in this year’s
election, told The Star McKinlay
should “put his money where his
mouth is” and run for council
himself.
McKinlay called out the other
councillors who supported
making a submission.
“Other councillors who
supported making a submission
opposing the Treaty Principles
Bill did so because of their
mistaken belief that New
Zealand is a bicultural society.
Māori and non-Māori, and cogovernance
of local government
is therefore consistent with their
understanding of the treaty.
“Equality between Māori and
non-Māori, the essence of Act’s
Treaty Principles Bill, would
see the end of co-governance
and the abandonment of special
rights and privileges for Māori,”
McKinlay said.
Lyall was aware his views on
the issue could lose him votes
if he decides to stand again, but
said he was not worried.
of Waitangi.
GEOFF SLOAN
During the meeting in
December where Lyall made
his comments, the council
debated what would be included
in its submission, as the views
of ratepayers’ had not been
canvassed.
In its submission, the council
focused on how the bill would
affect its operations and
partnerships, which includes
providing a seat around the
council table for local iwi.
Adventurers getting a glimpse
The post-quake city
was a haven for
urban explorers, but
as derelict buildings
are demolished, they
are looking for new
adventures. Dylan
Smits reports
MIKE, 25, HAS been an urban
explorer for the past eight years,
having scaled the old Rydges
Hotel and explored the nowclosed
wards of The Princess
Margaret Hospital.
“I think it’s a bit of a lifestyle
for sure. You can do it more
casually but I think it’s better
when people treat exploring with
a bit more respect,” he said.
Mike is a pseudonym as he
wishes to remain anonymous.
For those interested in urban
exploring (urbex) Mike said it is
important to follow the rules and
be prepared.
There is a loose code of conduct
for urbex, including no
damage to property, no forced
entry, never exploring alone
and only exploring unoccupied
premises.
“You definitely need to dress
appropriately and wearing gloves
and a headlamp is best,” said
Mike.
DISCOVER: The abandoned Harley Buildings on the corner of Cambridge Tce and Worcester
St were built in 1929 as a centre for doctor and dentist offices. Mike enjoys exploring them
due to the large amount of remaining furniture and equipment.
Early in his urban exploring
days, Mike and his mates were
more daring.
As a self described “dumb”
17-year-old, he snuck into the
abandoned Rydges Hotel to see
the penthouse view from the
roof, but ended up running from
the police.
The central city hotel was
closed in 2011 due to earthquake
damage and is currently
being renovated.
“It’s really cool seeing places
kind-of frozen in time from before
the earthquakes. Christchurch
is pretty unique in that
way,” said Mike.
After making a tricky climb
over a fence and scaffolding,
he and two friends were able
to enter the second floor
through a gap left in a wall after
construction work.
“It was a lot like other
abandoned spots. It was pretty
spooky. Some of it looks super
untouched like bathrooms and
some halls. Then other parts are
covered in graffiti,” said Mike.
After taking in the cityscape
from the roof, Mike and his
friends emerged from the hotel
“It’s really cool seeing
places kind of frozen
in time from before
the earthquakes.
Christchurch is pretty
unique in that way.”
– Mike, urban explorer
to find an angry police officer
waiting for them.
“Probably wouldn’t advise this
these days, but we ran. We didn’t
stop for ages and actually split
up,” he said.
A mechanic in his day job,
Mike now tries to keep his exploring
more sensible.
“I’ll admit I was definitely a bit
too reckless when I started, but
being honest, that was part of the
fun of it,” he said.
“The risk of getting caught can
be really thrilling, but it’s important
for anyone exploring that it’s
not the main reason they do it.”
A time when Mike was not so
lucky was while exploring the
empty wings of the shuttered
Princess Margaret Hospital.
“We got a good look in there
and it’s probably one of the
scarier places I’ve been. The place
is huge and straight out of a horror
movie,” he said.
Somehow an alarm was
tripped and security guards
arrived demanding they leave.
NEWS 15
of city’s disappearing heritage
“They gave us a bit of a scolding
and it was definitely a reminder to
be more careful when choosing a
location,” said Mike.
He understands some property
owners feel defensive of their property,
but wishes they could recognise
there are many responsible
urban explorers.
Mike tries to explore familiar
abandoned buildings or find new
ones most weekends.
The thrill and challenge of
entering restricted areas had the
most appeal when he was younger,
but as he’s aged Mike has gained
greater appreciation for the
local history of quake-damaged
buildings.
Two of his favourite places to
return to are the Harley Buildings
and Peterborough Apartments.
The Harley Buildings, on the
corner of Cambridge Tce and
Worcester St, were built in 1929
as a centre for doctor and dentist
offices.
“It’s got lots of cool stuff in there.
Lots of (abandoned) spots are
pretty empty but there’s still so
much – kind-of retro equipment
and furniture and files,” said Mike.
The buildings are currently being
demolished, which should be
completed in about a month.
The Peterborough Apartments,
closed after the 2011 earthquakes,
were built between 1924 and 1930.
HISTORY: The Peterborough Apartments, closed after the 2011 earthquakes, were built
between 1924 and 1930. The building is a favourite spot to revisit for urban explorer Mike.
It housed the primary school
teacher’s college until 1978.
Later it became the Peterborough
Centre and was occupied by
various artistic groups until being
converted into apartments in 1997.
Mike always follows the rules of
urbex by never taking anything,
but he does enjoy examining any
items left behind like old dental
x-rays in the Harley Buildings
or vintage medical equipment at
Princess Margaret Hospital.
“It’s sort of similar to tramping
or mountain climbing where
you’re able to discover new places
on your own. There’s not much
else in life like that.”
The Christchurch urbex community
is smaller than it was last
decade as more quake-damaged
buildings are demolished.
Although typically done by
younger men, Mike says people of
all ages, careers and backgrounds
enjoy the hobby.
“I had a girlfriend who got super
into urbex and she really liked the
photography side of things.
“Most seem to think urbex is
just young idiots just going into
places and wrecking stuff.”
It can be disappointing for him
to see vandalism and crude graffiti
in some abandoned spots.
“Most actual urbex people don’t
do that. There are just some young
guys who don’t show these places
proper respect.”
Born and raised in Christchurch,
Mike said urbex should be
about remembering the pre-quake
past rather than any destructive
behaviour.
“A lot of these spots have a lot
of history and it would have been
cool if they could have not been
damaged.”
As more quake-damaged buildings
get demolished, Mike believes
urbex in Christchurch will change.
“There is already a lot more
urbex out in the suburbs these
days. We’ll all be looking for more
abandoned houses to explore.”
1974 – THE FRIENDLY GAMES
Held in Christchurch from
January 24 to February
2, 1974, the 10th British
Commonwealth Games was
dubbed “The Friendly Games”
and had a joyful atmosphere
– despite a strong security
presence following the 1972
Munich Olympics massacre.
Dick Tayler’s 10,000m victory
got the games off to a buoyant
start. It closed just as strongly,
with an epic battle for gold in
the men’s 1500m between John
Walker and Filbert Bayi. The
Tanzanian eventually won,
with both men breaking the
world record.
Another notable games
victory was Christchurch
swimmer Jaynie Parkhouse in
the 800m freestyle.
The host nation came 4th in
the medal tally, with 9 gold, 8
silver and 18 bronze.
It was the first time a city had
asked the games federation to
allow commercial advertising,
which was voted down, but
Christchurch got around this
with the use of “sponsorship”.
It included General Motors
providing a fleet of Holden
HQ Kingswoods to transport
athletes, which were sold off
afterwards.
Although the games were
a success, Christchurch was
saddled with a significant debt.
By 1990, when Auckland held
the games, they had been fully
commercialised.
Fun facts:
• The $4.5 million QEII
stadium was built for the games
and opened the year before
• Sales of first day stamp
covers issued totalled 10,000 in
Christchurch on January 9
• Several church halls were
turned into makeshift accommodation,
charging 50c a night
after backpackers filled up
• A total of 51,718 passengers
passed through Christchurch
Airport, far exceeding passenger
density records
• St John treated 832 people
over the course of the games –
566 at the track and field, and
60 at the bowls
• An imposter in the men’s
marathon was stopped after he
reportedly entered the race in
black shorts and a singlet and
tried to gain 11th place.
Parents, teachers and the
government investing in our future
Like many of you, our children are getting prepared
for the school year ahead. This can be an expensive
and challenging time for families, but as a parent and
an MP, I firmly believe that education is essential to
building a brighter future both for our children and
our country.
Our National-led government has been committed
to improving educational outcomes for all students,
and we have implemented several key initiatives
to ensure every child can succeed. Attendance
is a priority, and we are pleased regular school
attendance increased 5.3 percentage points from
46% in Term 3 of 2023 to 51.3% in Term 3, 2024, but
we appreciate more needs to be done.
Another change has been the requirement for
primary and intermediate schools to dedicate, on
average, one hour each day to teaching reading,
writing, and maths. This foundational approach
ensures students develop essential skills early on,
setting them up for future academic success.
To further enhance the learning environment, we
have banned cell phone use in classrooms reducing
distractions allowing teachers to focus on delivering
high-quality instruction without interruptions.
Term 1, 2025 sees the implementation of a structured
literacy approach in all schools, including a $67
million investment in professional development and
resources for teachers, ensuring they have the tools
and knowledge needed to deliver first-class
literacy instruction.
Likewise, we have launched a comprehensive maths
action plan addressing New Zealand’s challenge in
maths education, including the introduction of a
new maths curriculum from Term 1, 2025. We want
to equip students with the mathematical skills they
need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Our government has also introduced six education
priorities focused on lifting student achievement.
These include establishing a knowledge-rich
curriculum, implementing evidence-based instruction
in literacy and mathematics, developing consistent
assessment methods, improving teacher training and
development, strengthening learning support, and
enhancing data-driven decision-making.
To raise academic standards, and ensure our
students are well-prepared for the challenges of
the future, we have set an ambitious target to have
80% of Year 8 students at or above the expected
curriculum level in reading, writing, and maths by
December 2030.
Parents, teachers and the government can work
together to create a world-leading education system
and build a brighter future for our children and our
nation.
Best wishes for a successful and safe year ahead.
Kind regards
WEEK FOur
traInInG PrOGraMMe
upping the pace
This week we will step it up a bit more. The beginners group will progress to the stage that most of the walking is
replaced by slow jogging and the intermediate group are starting to incorporate some efforts in zone 2. Remember
that zone 1 is perceived as an easy effort which you can maintain for very long periods of time. In zone 2 you will get
slightly puffed but you can still have a conversation. You go from jogging in zone 1 to a proper running movement in
zone 2 with the main difference being that zone 1 has a slower rhythm, staying low to the ground where as zone 2 brings
extra spring in your step combined with an increase in leg turnover (stride rate). The intermediate group introduces
zone 2 pace as 2 minute repetitions alternated by 2 minute easy jogging. Zone 2 to 3 will be the recommended pace
for the City to Surf event for the intermediate group while the beginners will mainly stay in zone 1 and 2.
The difference between walking and jogging is not only decided by the rhythm of the movement but also how and
where you land your feet. When jogging most efficiently you land on your mid-foot under the centre of gravity of the
body, which, in the upright position, is located in the pelvis just behind the midline of the body. With a slight forward
lean of the body you can use gravity to pull you forward while your legs keep you upright and push you in a forward
direction. Walking is done in a more upright position and most of us land on our heel first and roll over the outside of
our foot before pushing off with our forefoot. It helps to keep your core (lower abdomen, back, pelvis and hips) well
supported by pushing your pelvis slightly forward. This will stop you from “sitting” and over striding.
To achieve this goal you
need to develop some
awareness around the
basic requirements of
exercising for health and
fitness. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key
principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4 sessions
per week. 2 or 3 sessions per week will only
maintain what you have and 1 session per
week is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The duration
of your sessions will generally build towards
between 30 and 50 minutes with one longer
session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at? The
good thing about the programme is that all
your runs will be done at submaximal pace,
also called conversation pace. That means a
pace where you can still talk. If you can’t talk
you are going too fast and you are likely to
come to a grinding halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
tIP OF the WeeK
There is no need to bring fluids with you
during the sessions as you are not exercising
long and hard enough to cause serious
dehydration. Even on warm (north-west)
days it is sufficient to have a glass of water
or juice just before you go out. You can
re-hydrate on your return home, again with
water and/or a glass of fruit juice. Taking
fluids during exercise is generally not
required until you start to exceed 90 minutes
on a normal day and 60 minutes on a hot
day (temperatures above 25 degrees).
SPORTS NEWS
brought to you by
Return of imports a boost
for Park’s premiership push
• By Sam Coughlan
ENGLISH ALL-rounder Fynn
Hudson-Prentice will be looking
to continue his good form with
the bat in his third week back
for Lancaster Park in the Metro
Premiership.
In his two innings so far this
season, Hudson-Prentice has
scored 79 off 49 balls against
Heathcote, and a more steady 45
against Sydenham last week, both
in wins for Lancaster Park, who
play East Shirley on Saturday.
Hudson-Prentice, who turned
out for Lancaster Park during
2018 and 2019, plays for Sussex
in the County Championship, is
joined at Lancaster Park by fellow
Englishman Will Harby from
Kent’s second XI. Harby also
played for Park last season.
The pair will play for the
remainder of the one-day competition,
and one round of two-day
competition, before returning to
the UK for their pre-season.
Lancaster Park skipper Angus
Hamilton said the pair add a lot to
the team.
“ It’s awesome, especially with
them both being all-rounders. It
certainly helps with the balance of
the team quite a lot.”
Hudson-Prentice has taken
85 first-class wickets and scored
2286 runs in county cricket –
with a high score of 99, in 2019
while playing for Derbyshire.
“ I got a ball on the hip that I
tried to punish over square leg.
And I just hit it straight up in
the air,” he said of just missing
his century.
“The beans were going a little
bit. I was a bit anxious to get off
99. It was a pretty average shot.
“That was five-and-a-half
years ago now, and I still haven’t
managed to get over the line (for
a century).”
CLASS: All-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice will play for Lancaster
Park until the end of the 2024/25 season. The English import has
scored more than 2000 first-class runs and taken 85 wickets in
England’s County Championship.
PHOTOS: GETTY
He said it was far better to be
playing club cricket and training
with the Canterbury squad than
training indoors during the
English winter.
“ It’s just nice to get away from
freezing temperatures in the UK
at the moment,” he said.
“I think back home it’s about
minus two, so it has been good
to get away from that and spend
some time in the sun.
“(And) it’s just nice to get the
opportunity at (Lancaster Park),
they’ve been really good to me.”
Lancaster Park are unbeaten
and on track to contest the
finals.
In Brief
Burke named in
Scotland squad
Former Crusaders and New
Zealand under-20s first five-eighth
Fergus Burke has been named
in the Scotland squad for the
upcoming Six Nations. Burke
last year signed a three-year deal
with London-based Gallagher
Premiership club Saracens after
starting at No 10 for the Crusaders.
He made 37 appearances for the
Crusaders and played 48 NPC
matches for Canterbury. Burke
will compete for the No 10 shirt
with Finn Russell and Tom Jordan
ahead of Scotland’s Six Nations
opener against Italy on February 2.
Phoenix back in town
after nine year break
The Wellington Phoenix will
play in Christchurch for the first
time in nine years on Saturday
when they meet the Central Coast
Mariners. The last A-League match
to be played at Apollo Projects
Stadium was in January 2016 – also
against the Mariners, who beat
the Phoenix 3-1. Both teams are
coming off a win. The ninth-place
Phoenix came from behind to beat
Macarthur FC 2-1 on Monday
with Kosta Barbarouses scoring
his 100th A-League goal. The
10th-place Mariners beat Western
Sydney Wanderers 3-1 on Friday.
Kick-off is at 5pm.
Young talents to join
Three of Canterbury’s most
promising young women rugby
league players have taken up
opportunities in the 2025 Tarsha
Gale Cup, the NSWRL’s elite
under-19s competition. Hornby’s
Kyra-Lee Westland and Linwood’s
Dejah Tuliau have been selected
in Penrith Panthers’ squad, while
Hornby’s Manisha Seebeck
joins Sydney Roosters. The trio
Big month ahead for top
Chch rowers at Ruataniwha
• By Sam Coughlan
CHRISTCHURCH rowing
clubs are now turning their
attention to the South Island
championships, then the
nationals, after successful results
at the Canterbury Champs on
Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel at the
weekend.
Avon took home 31 medals –
the most of any Christchurch
club, and second-most for the
regatta behind Otago’s Dunstan
Arm, on 38.
Canterbury won 14, while St
Bede’s College had the thirdmost
for Christchurch crews
with 13.
Union and St Margaret’s College
both won 11.
Avon director of rowing Logan
Keys said it had put them in
good stead ahead of the South
Island championships, also in
Twizel from February 1-2, and
the national championships in
the same venue from February
18-22.
“ Four weeks until nationals,
we’ve just got to make sure
we keep getting faster quickly
and have some smooth events,”
he said.
“ By South Islands we’re intending
to have what we think
we’ll be racing at nationals.”
With three high-profile
competitions in just five weeks,
keeping the rowers fit and
healthy was the priority, Keys
said.
“ The high performance
group has access to the Apollo
Centre and they train there with
High Performance Sport New
Zealand.
“The other athletes have
gaps in their programme to get
strength and conditioning in the
week as well.
“Keeping them healthy, that
was the biggest frustration we
had at Canterbury Champs,
25-30% of the squad had little
sicknesses hanging around.”
Sixteen Christchurch clubs and
schools took home medals at the
championships – with Cashmere
High School winning the women’s
SPORT 19
They said it
“Sportsmanship for me is
when a guy walks off the
court and you really can’t
tell whether he won or lost,
when he carries himself with
pride either way.”
– Jim Courier, four-time
tennis major winner
“Competitive sports are
played mainly on a five-anda-half
inch court, the space
between your ears.”
– Bobby Jones, golf icon
“One day of practice is like
one day of clean living. It
doesn’t do you any good.”
– Abe Lemons, college
basketball coach
“This is really a lovely horse. I
once rode her mother.”
– Ted Walsh, Irish jockey
turned racehorse trainer
“Statistics are like bikinis
– they show a lot but not
everything.”
– Lou Piniella, US baseball
player and manager
“I’ve missed more than 9000
shots in my career. I’ve lost
almost 300 games. 26 times,
I’ve been trusted to take
the game winning shot and
missed. I’ve failed over and
over and over again in my life.
And that is why I succeed.”
