A day of service at the
Highland Youth Garden
Messenger photos by Dedra Cordle
Dozens of people from across the county traveled to the
Highland Youth Garden on Jan. 20 to attend their annual Martin
Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Volunteers of all ages honored
the life and accomplishments of the civil rights icon by participating
in a variety of events to benefit the community. Shown
here planting seeds that will go toward feeding the community
is Kit Pennington. The resident of Reynoldsburg said it was her
first time volunteering at the Highland Youth Garden but she
plans to become a more frequent presence at the westside
garden. “I would like to come out here and volunteer as much
as I can,” she said.

Columbus resident Colleen Feeney (below) braves the bitter
cold temperatures to pick up litter around the garden and the

Area Commission
By Dedra Cordle

The Greater Hilltop Area Commission
is looking to fill a vacancy.
At its meeting in January, the commission
announced it would be accepting nominations
for an open seat until Feb. 3.
Individuals who are interested in submitting
their names for consideration can
contact any current member on the commission
before the deadline. The selection
will take place at the Feb. 4 meeting.
Vice-chairman Dan Fagan said the
ideal candidate is someone who has a passion
for service and someone who is willing
to “be a voice” for the community.
“The ideal candidate is someone who is
interested in representing their neighborhood
and being a voice for whatever they
may need,” he said in an interview after
the meeting. “As commissioners, we are
often asked by the city to give input and
feedback on what is needed in the community
and so we want and need someone
who is willing to speak up on those issues

Construction is expected to begin later
this year on more than 600 residences on
the east side of Galloway Road, north of
Alkire Road.
The residences, a mix of single-family
detached residences, patio homes, and
multi-family units, will be constructed
across the street from existing residences
on the west side of Galloway Road, north of
Alkire Road, known as Chase Landings.
“We expect to finalize engineering for

The candidate who is chosen to serve on
the commission will be limited to a oneyear
term. They will fill the unexpired
term of former commissioner Rachel
Wenning, who announced her resignation
two months ago.
Wenning was an elected member of the
commission, meaning candidates will need
to meet certain requirements in order to fill
her term. According to the bylaws, candidates
will need to meet these two requirements:
• The candidate must be 18 years of age
or older.
• The candidate must be a resident of
the Greater Hilltop.
The commission initially appointed
Sahro Amin to fill the unexpired term of
Wenning last month. They were recently
told by the city department which oversees
area commissions that she was ineligible to
fill that role due to residency requirements.
The commission was able to find a seat
for Amin at the table, however.
The commission held nominations for an
open appointed seat at the January meeting.
In order to be considered for the position,
one must be 18 years of age or older

for T & R Properties, the developer of
the 133-acre parcel.
The development on the east side of
Galloway Road is yet to be named and also
includes a commercial component.
Residences on the east side of Galloway
Road include 289 single-family detached
houses, 240 multi-family units, and 106
twin-single patio homes, according to
Sabatino.
At the same time, the fourth phase of
the residences on the west side of Galloway

Amin for the open seat. There were no
objections nor were there any other nominees
to consider.
Fagan said he was glad that Amin
would be joining the commission as an
appointed member.
“I think she is really passionate about
being involved in the community and making
a difference,” he said.
A former resident of the Hilltop area,
Amin currently resides in Columbus. She
is employed as a family ambassador at the
one of the area middle schools. Three years
ago, she helped establish the Bantu Hope
Foundation, an outreach program that provides
activities, learning opportunities,
and resources for local children and their
families.
This will be the first time Amin has
served on an area commission. She said at
both the December meeting and the
January meeting that she is looking forward
to the experience.
“I am ready to get to work,” she said.
In other news, the commission selected

serve as chair, while Ashley Montana will
serve as vice-chair. Joe Argiro will reprise
his role as secretary, while Dean Smith

Sabatino said.
In addition to more than 600 residences,
the development on Galloway Road will
also have commercial applications.
“We have already received substantial
interest for a medical user on the commercial
piece and look forward to bringing this
exciting development in Prairie Township,”
Sabatino said.

Prairie Township administrator James

The development also met with the

SWACO offers many programs to help reduce waste

(SWACO) officials believe recycling is key
in controlling the amount of trash that
ends up in landfills.
“Recycling is important for many reasons:
It conserves the natural resources
that would be used to create virgin material,
it reduces energy consumption (for
instance, recycling aluminum cans uses
90% less energy than virgin aluminum), it

businesses, and it reduces reliance on the
landfill and extends its life,” said SWACO
Communities Program Administrator
Karen Seidel
SWACO is a political subdivision of the
State of Ohio formed under House Bill 592,
and it owns and operates the Franklin
County Sanitary Landfill.
“Our mission is to ‘champion transformational
diversion programs & safe disposal
of the waste stream,’” said Seidel. “We do
not process recyclables, but we offer many
different programs designed to increase
recycling in
Franklin County.”
These programs
include:
•Facilitating the
consortium program
for participating
communities to
ensure they can provide
the best trash,
recycling and yard
waste services to
their residents at
the most competitive
rates;
Love Me Tender

•Public education
and outreach.

for a good example
of our recycling education
efforts.
“It’s a great resource for residents with
questions about what can be recycled,” said
Seidel.
•Providing grants, resources and technical
assistance to communities, businesses,
non-profit organizations and schools
that want to recycle or improve their recycling
programs; and
•Offering recycling and safe disposal
options for hard-to-recycle items to
Franklin County residents at our Recycling
Convenience Center and Household
Hazardous Waste Facility.
How much is actually recycled?
When asked about reports from around
the country that only a percentage of recyclable
material that is gathered is actually
recycled, Seidel said, “We have seen these
reports as well. Fortunately, they do not
represent the situation in Central Ohio at
all. Rumpke, the company that processes
the majority of residential recycling in
Franklin County, indicates that the contamination
rate at their recycling facility is
less than 10 percent, meaning more than
90 percent of the material that is delivered
to their recycling facility is recycled (the
rest are things that aren’t recyclable). That
is an amazingly low contamination rate
and is a result of good recycling habits by
our residents and businesses. It’s also a
result of the recycling education efforts
made by SWACO and others. In addition,
more than 80 percent of what we recycle in
Central Ohio goes on to have new life in a
new product right here in Ohio. We’re fortunate
to be in a state with a strong circular
recycling economy that supports almost
400 recycling-reliant businesses employing
more than 5,000 of our Ohio neighbors.”
She said virtually all the residential
recycling collected in Franklin County is
processed at a new, $100 million Rumpke
Recycling facility in Columbus.
“It’s the largest such facility in North
America,” said Seidel. “This state-of-the art
facility employs 60 people to process up to
250,000 tons of recycling each year from
nearly 50 Ohio counties. Rumpke offers
tours of the facility in operation — it’s worth
seeing in person to understand the efforts
that are being made to get this material to
the manufacturers that can use it as a raw
material to be made into new items.
Rumpke is also expanding the list of items
that can be recycled at its new facility,
including clear clamshell containers like
the ones that berries or pastries might
come in.”
Recycled products
When asked what kinds of products, etc.
are produced from materials that are recycled
in central Ohio, Seidel said, “A variety
of items, including new cardboard boxes,
aluminum cans, and glass bottles, in addition
to things like plastic lumber and fiberglass
insulation. You can find examples
and other information on our Circular Ohio
website.”
The Franklin County Sanitary Landfill
is the only landfill in Franklin County
where municipal solid waste (household

and business trash) can be disposed of. The
current life expectancy for the landfill is
about 40 years. There are two other landfills
in Franklin County for construction
and demolition material.
SWACO recycling expansion
SWACO’s Recycling Convenience
Center opened in November 2023 as the
first-of-its-kind facility in Franklin County
to accept hard to recycle household items
like tires, batteries, food waste and
Styrofoam. SWACO is making the center
more convenient for residents to use by
removing paint fees and expanding the list
of materials accepted.
The center will also now collect plastic
prescription pill bottles from residents for
recycling. While over-the-counter pill bottles
can be recycled in curbside recycling
carts, plastic prescription bottles and their
lids are not accepted curbside. Plastic prescription
bottles brought to the Recycling
Convenience Center should be empty, and
the bottles will be recycled with Industrial
Recyclers in Sydney, Ohio.
In addition to the expanded list of materials
accepted, SWACO is removing the $1
per can fee previously charged for the recycling
of household latex paint. Now latex
and all other household paint are accepted
for free from residents.
The center is accepting several seasonal
items this year including pumpkins and
gourds, outdoor and holiday string lights,
live evergreen trees, wreaths and garland
(free from decoration) and leaves. These
items will be collected annually during the
seasons in which they’re in demand.
•Bagged leaves will be accepted through
Jan. 31 (paper bags only, no plastic bags).
•Live holiday trees and greenery free of
decorations, tinsel and plastic will be
accepted through Jan. 31
•Holiday string lights are accepted
year-round in the bins marked for electronic
or e-Waste.
Since opening a year ago, the center has
helped over 2,000 customers to divert more
than 190,000 pounds of material from the
landfill, the equivalent of six school buses.
The Recycling Convenience Center is
located at 2566 Jackson Pike in Columbus
and is operational Monday through Friday
from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday
from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents can
drive up to the convenience center and
unload their recyclable and other materials,
placing them in designated and clearly
marked bins or areas. SWACO’s center is
staffed to assist residents and collect fees
for some of the materials accepted at this
facility.
Examples of recyclable material include:
paper and cardboard; plastic bottles and
containers; glass bottles and jars; metal
cans and cups; and cartons.
Items not acceptable for recycling are:
plastic bags, wrap, or film; batteries,
propane tanks, or other flammables; tanglers
like clothes hangers, hoses, chains,
wires, clothing, or electronics; and foam
cups, plates, and food containers.

parking lot and great prices. The forerunner to the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea
Company (known as A&P) started as a small tea and coffee retail shop in New York
City in 1859, then expanded to include a mail order division, and ultimately added
more products, becoming a collection of grocery stores. By the 1930s, the company

Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein
announced the Property Action Team
secured a court order to shut down a westside
drug house where police and the city
received numerous complaints about drug
activity. In recent months, Columbus
police officers observed heavy foot traffic in
and out of the Hilltop property and conducted
several stops of individuals leaving
the premises who had drugs in their possession.
The police department executed an
order to board up the property, located at
94 Orel Ave.
“While it’s a new year, our priorities
remain the same - to go after drug houses
and any property owners whose negligence
and lawlessness degrade the quality of life
in our neighborhoods,” said Klein. “Thanks
to CPD, the Property Action Team, and
concerned neighbors, this drug house is
boarded up and this area of the Hilltop is
safer. I encourage anyone who sees nuisance
or criminal activity to report it to the
division of police or 311 so we can take similar
actions to hold property owners
accountable in your neighborhood.”
According to court documents,
Columbus police gathered significant evidence
of drug sales at the premises in
recent months, including nine occasions
where officers stopped vehicles leaving the

property and found drugs or drug paraphernalia
inside. On at least four occasions
over the past two months, police directly
observed heavy foot traffic indicative of
drug sales.
Just last week, a community member
reported to police that this activity
remained ongoing.
CPD’s investigation came on the heels of
an overdose at the property in 2023, and
city officials directly observing drug paraphernalia
inside the property’s garage in
May of 2024. Also, by May of 2024, CPD
and city staff had received a number of
community complaints of nuisance activity
occurring at the property.
The property is located directly across
the street from another drug house the
Property Action Team filed against in June
2024, which was also boarded up by CPD.
“Taking out a drug house directly across
the street from one boarded up just six
months ago goes to show that when the city
takes action against a problem property,
we don’t just walk away, we stay engaged
with the division of police and neighbors.
Now, the Hilltop is safer because our partners
and the community worked together
to make a difference,” said Property Action
Team Attorney Rob Doersam.

Funeral etiquette: What to wear, what to say and how to help
You want to honor a friend and support the
bereft family, but you don’t want to bring attention
to yourself with a misstep. Here are some tips
to put you at ease.
What to wear:
While black is the traditional color of mourning,
it is no longer mandatory. Any dark or muted
color that is understated and tasteful is acceptable.
No attention-grabbing wardrobe choices or overly
casual wear like shorts and flip flops to a traditional
service.
What to say:
Your heart is full, but your mind draws a blank
on how to express yourself to the grieving family.
Sharing a fond memory is always appreciated and
shows how their loved one impacted your life.
Etiquette expert, Elaine Swann, suggests "My
condolences to you and the entire family" or "My
thoughts are with you" are always safe bets. Keep
it short and simple. Well intentioned statements
like "He's in a better place” or “the pain will
lessen in time” can feel insensitive. If helpful,
prepare a few polite and sincere words of sympathy
beforehand. If the right words don’t flow naturally,
a hug alone can offer great comfort.
How to help:
Sympathy cards and food are always appreciated.
When providing food, it is considerate to
present the dish in a disposable container with
baking instructions included if necessary.
Flowers, when religiously appropriate, or donations
to a special cause, are extra ways to express
your sympathy. Later, when the gatherings are
over, is often when your friends will need support,
so check in on them then.
Be yourself:
Remember, the grieving family appreciates
any act of kindness. Be present and sincere, and
your compassion will be a comfort.
Stay in touch:
While the funeral may be over, the grieving
process is not. Remember to stay in contact with
the bereaved and there if they need you.

Director
Dear Franklin County Seniors,
It’s a pleasure to introduce myself as the
Director of the Franklin County Office on
Aging (FCOA). My journey to this role is
deeply personal, shaped by a commitment
to service and family. Growing up as the eldest
of three children in Columbus, I witnessed
firsthand the importance of community
and care, values instilled in me by my
grandmother, who often reminded me to
work hard and dream big.
My path also led me to become a caregiver—a
role that taught me the challenges
and rewards of supporting loved ones. That
experience drives my passion for helping
older adults maintain their independence
and live with dignity.
At FCOA, we offer services like home-delivered
meals, caregiver support, minor home
repairs, and protective services for older
adults to ensure they have what they need
to thrive. Whether it’s providing resources or
simply being a helping hand, our mission is
to make aging in place not just a possibility
but a right for every senior in Franklin
County.
If you or someone you know could use our
support, please call us at (614) 525-6200 or
