Canal Winchester Library
construction tops out
The Columbus Metropolitan Library topped out its new
Canal Winchester Branch in a major construction milestone
with the final steel beam being affixed to the top of the building
on Jan. 14.
CML CEO Lauren Hagan led the ceremony, which included
Canal Winchester Mayor Joe Steager, Canal Winchester City
Administrator Matthew Peoples, Canal Winchester City Council
Vice President Laurie Amick, Canal Winchester City
Councilmembers Alec McLaughlin and Patrick Shea, CML’s
Canal Winchester Branch Manager Keith Hanson and representatives
from the Franklin County Auditor, Bostwick Design
Partnership and Turner Construction.
The current Canal Winchester Library Branch at 115
Franklin St. is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-8
p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. It opened in
2016 as an “express branch” to serve a community that did not
previously have close access to library services. It will remain
open during construction of the new branch.
The new, stand alone Canal Winchester Library Branch
under construction at 123 Groveport Road will be more than five
times the size of the current branch, from roughly 5,400 square
feet to approximately 30,000 square feet. CML expects to open
the new Canal Winchester Branch in 2026. Turner is the construction
manager at risk and Bostwick Design Partnership is
the architect.

CHIPPING TOOTH
There are a lot of ways that
children or adults can chip their
front teeth. No two are ever
exactly the same, but the result
should be considered a dental
emergency which requires immediate
dental care.
When injury exposes the tooth
pulp, it can be serious since the
potential for infection is high. The
pulp is the innermost chamber of
the tooth and contains nerves
and blood vessels.
Temporary treatment of injured
tooth pulp includes the use of a
sedative dressing to cut down
sensitivity in the area.

CW State of the City presented
Theresa Garee
Staff Writer
The Canal Winchester Chamber sponsored a State
of the City Address on Jan. 15.
At the event Mayor Joe Steager reminisced on the
past holiday season and mentioned people are moving
to Canal Winchester for that, “Warm feeling you get
here.” He also addressed 2024 projects like the
refreshed South High Street for pedestrian safety that
incorporated historical highlights. He pointed out new
businesses in the area, the new library, and the renovated
O.P. Chaney building.
“We were able to be a part of placing the final beam
(on Jan. 14 at the new library located at 123 Groveport
Road), Steager said.
Steager said the city is doing all that it can to help
businesses with improvements to help keep the “old
town” historically accurate. The city offers grants for
such improvements. However, he said Canal
Winchester also serves as a commercial hub for southeastern
Franklin County and noted several businesses
that have joined the area, as well as new restaurants
to feed the workers in these areas.
Steager said the movement of companies like Intel
to the Columbus area have proved that central Ohio
communities will need to provide more housing. The
most recent housing development in consideration for
Canal Winchester is the Miller Farms development
being proposed along Lithopolis, Hayes, and Oregon
roads.
Some residents have questioned the Miller Farms
development stating that the homes would increase
the number of students in the schools which could
increase taxes for seniors, increase traffic, cause potential
flooding and drainage issues, cause potential harm
to area residents’ water wells, potentially increase
crime, reduce green space, and damage Canal
Winchester’s “small town feel.”
The developer has countered that the project features
“exceptionally high quality homes” and that the
plan meets the objectives of the city’s Community
Plan.
Also at the event, Canal Winchester City
Administrator Matt Peoples spoke about facility
improvements. The largest facility improvement
planned is the improvement to the water reclamation
facility. A project that is receiving monetary assistance
from the Ohio EPA. Receiving assistant funding is a
main goal for several projects that will impact Canal
Winchester. Projects like the widening of U.S. Route
33 and the bridge improvements on south Gender
Road by the Westchester Golf course.
“We are searching for more grants to keep expenditures
as low as we can.” Peoples said.
Looking forward, Peoples said Destination Canal
Winchester, the Canal Winchester Chamber, and the
city are combining efforts in planning for the bicentennial
celebration in 2028.
Buses and books
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
Canal Winchester Schools will have a couple of new
buses as well as reading program.
At its Jan. 13 meeting, the Canal Winchester Board
of Education approved the purchase of a 78-passenger
bus at a cost of $132,441 and a 48-passenger bus at a
cost of $125,572.
“The bus purchase is part of our purchasing cycle,”
said Canal Winchester Schools Director of
Communications Megan Anthony. “In our capital
spending plan, we budget for purchasing two to four
buses each year for our fleet to ensure we have buses
to replace those that will be retiring.”
Reading program
The board also approved the purchase of the Into
Reading K-5 Curriculum package with HMH
Education Company at a cost of $368,194. It includes
student and teacher print materials, digital licenses
and resources, and in-person and virtual professional
development and training. It will begin in the 2025-26
school year.
When asked why the Into Reading program is a
Township Police report
According to the Madison Township Police, during
December, MTPD officers responded to 262 dispatched
calls and logged 12,091 patrol miles. Officers impounded
25 vehicles and used 1,250 gallons of fuel. In addition,
4 OVI arrests were made; one in the unincorporated
regions north of U.S. Route 33, one near
Marwick Estates, one in Canal Winchester city limits,
and one outside the unincorporated regions of Madison
Township. Throughout 2024, Madison Township officers
arrested 88 impaired drivers.
good step for the district, Craig Lautenschleger, the
district’s director of elementary teaching and learning,
said, “Into Reading was selected as our new K-5
English Language Arts curriculum after a comprehensive
three-year process of planning, research, and pilot
testing, led by our Teaching and Learning Department
with participation from teachers at every grade level.
During the first half of this school year, Into Reading
was one of two programs piloted in the district. It
aligns with the Science of Reading, is approved by the
Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, and has
received high ratings from EdReports.”
Lautenschleger added this curriculum was chosen
“for its many strengths, including engaging themes
and topics that reflect diverse, real-world experiences,
a developmentally appropriate approach to grammar
and vocabulary, and consistent instructional practices
for the classroom.”
Board officers
At its organizational meeting on Jan. 13, the board
elected Vangela Barnes as board president and Dave
George as board vice president.

A Successful Start in 2025
As we embark on this new year, I want to reflect on 2024
and share my gratitude for the incredible privilege of
serving you in the Ohio Senate. We achieved remarkable
milestones together, and I am optimistic about
what lies ahead. I was honored to take the oath of office
in January as we officially began the 136th General Assembly.
From day one, my commitment has been to
work with my constituents and the great people of
Ohio. I focus on crafting policies that uplift families,
strengthen communities, and create opportunities for
all Ohioans to thrive. Due to redistricting, my district will
now include parts of Franklin, Pickaway, and Madison
Counties. I am excited about this change and the opportunity
to expand my advocacy at the Statehouse to
my new constituents. One of the highlights of 2024 was
attending the Governor’s bill signings on several important
pieces of legislation I championed. It was indeed a
proud moment to see our collective efforts result in
meaningful changes that will positively impact lives
across the state:
● SB 95 – Authorizing the Use of Tele-Pharmacy
Services: This legislation expands access to
pharmaceutical care in underserved areas,
everaging technology to ensure that all Ohioans
have the resources to manage their health effectively.
● HB 8 – The “Parents Bill of Rights: ”A landmark
measure empowering parents with greater
involvement in their children’s education and
ensuring transparency in the decisions that
affect our future generations.
● HB 173 – Designating “Ohio Black Media Week:”
This bill celebrates the vital contributions
of Black media outlets in our state, recognizing
heir role in amplifying voices, sharing stories,
and fostering informed communities. I am pleased

Chandra
Wingo
Director
Dear Franklin County Seniors,
It’s a pleasure to introduce myself as the
Director of the Franklin County Office on
Aging (FCOA). My journey to this role is
deeply personal, shaped by a commitment
to service and family. Growing up as the eldest
of three children in Columbus, I witnessed
firsthand the importance of community
and care, values instilled in me by my
grandmother, who often reminded me to
work hard and dream big.
My path also led me to become a caregiver—a
role that taught me the challenges
and rewards of supporting loved ones. That
experience drives my passion for helping
older adults maintain their independence
and live with dignity.
At FCOA, we offer services like home-delivered
meals, caregiver support, minor home
repairs, and protective services for older
adults to ensure they have what they need
to thrive. Whether it’s providing resources or
simply being a helping hand, our mission is
to make aging in place not just a possibility
but a right for every senior in Franklin
County.
If you or someone you know could use our
support, please call us at (614) 525-6200 or
visit officeonaging.org. We’re here for you!
Warmly,
Chanda Wingo

The farmers at Metro Parks Slate Run
Living Historical Farm, 1375 State Route
674 North, Canal Winchester, recently
demonstrated how snow was cleared on
the farm for paths in the 1880s. The
farm’s horse drawn wooden snow plow is
similar to the one seen in the journal,
“Prairie Farmer” from 1886. According to
an article (at right) in the “Prairie
Farmer,” the home made snow plow is
made of two inch planks, 12 inches wide
and six feet long. “The planks are sawed
doubly beveling at the forward end, so as
to incline somewhat like a double moldboard
plow,” according to the article.
“The cross piece is a of plank of the
same width and thickness.” In the photo, the driver sits on a bale of straw atop the
wooden snow plow.

CW’s Kid Zone
The city of Canal Winchester has
launched a new, free, children’s open play
program. “Kid Zone” began Jan. 8 in
Council Chambers at City Hall, 45 E.
Waterloo St., Canal Winchester. The program
takes place on Wednesday mornings
from 9-11 a.m.
Kid Zone offers children age eight and
under a clean, safe space to play freely.
The program came about after local business
Spark Play Café closed, creating an
opportunity for the city.
“We have been looking to expand our
programming to include more activities for
younger children,” said Canal Winchester
Mayor Joe Steager. “When we learned that
Spark was closing, we reached out to owner
Kristin Harlander to see if there was a way
for the city to offer a similar concept.”
Harlander agreed to provide the city
with many of the play stations she had
purchased with sponsorship dollars.
“It didn’t seem right to sell them like
some of our other inventory,” Harlander
said. “If the donors didn’t want it back, this
seemed like the next best option.”
A variety of play stations such as model
kitchens, grocery stores, and construction
work benches will be set up inside Council
Chambers on Wednesday mornings.
Children may stop in between 9-11 a.m. to
play for free. Adult supervision is required
at all times.
“Although we never like to see a business
close, we’re happy to be able to continue
this program for free to our community,”
said Steager.

contact Adriana McPherson at 614-
837-8276.

Everyone involved in this movie is having a good time
A vital piece that has been missing in
the action-comedy genre as of late — besides
a truly original plot, that is — is the lack of
genuine movie stars featured within. In an
effort to be kind and courteous to the upand-coming
actors and the well-known
faces who are cast in their stead, they
(mostly) do an admirable job of selling
these humorously violent tales to the masses,
but it is the presence of the genuine
movie star that can make even the most
standard of the bunch pop off the screen.
“Back in Action,” the latest action-comedy
released by Netflix, understands the
power of the genuine movie star and it uses
that to their advantage. This is not a movie
that is propelled by a great script — it often
comes across as the first draft submission —
but it doesn’t have to be great because it
has Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz speaking
its words. It also does not contain that
much humor or quality action either but it
doesn’t have to because Foxx is there making
everything sound and look much cooler
than it is and Diaz is selling the material
with her expressive face that can go from
“Let’s be best friends” to “I am going to rip
off your face” in a matter of second. To be
honest, or even more honest, this movie
isn’t even particularly good, but once again
it doesn’t have to be because it has these
charming and charismatic individuals
throwing their charm and charisma all
over the place.
This is a film that knows it is not a great
piece of cinematic art, but it effortlessly
wields the power of the genuine movie star
The Reel Deal
and transforms this
feature into something
that is fun and completely
entertaining.
With the suaveness of
the starring cast, their
easy chemistry, and
the occasionally
decent action
sequence, this movie
demands that you
look past all of its
flaws and have an enjoyable time.
Dedra
Cordle
“Back in Action” begins 15 years in the
past, when Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz)
were two of the best agents in the CIA.
While on a mission to procure a device that
had the ability to control all of the world’s
most important infrastructure, the pair
were double-crossed and barely escaped
with their lives. This normally would have
been no big deal for the duo — after all, they
have had several brushes with death in the
past - but shortly before escaping the rogue
plane Emily discovered that she was pregnant
with Matt’s child. Believing that this
is some kind of sign to get out of the business
— “Kids don’t mix well with this line of
work,” quips Matt — they use their close
call with oblivion to say goodbye to the spy
game and fake their own deaths.
The film then leaps to the present and
we see that the former spies are living a
painfully ordinary life of suburban
American normalcy. Matt is the head coach
of a youth soccer team; Emily has a job selling
custom puzzles on Etsy; and their
teenage children Alice (McKenna Roberts)
and Leo (Rylan Jackson) think their parents
are hopelessly lame. That belief in the
lameness of their parents begins to change,
however, when they go viral after beating
up some college twerps who were hitting on
the underage Alice. This action, which
admittedly made Matt and Emily “feel
truly alive” for the first time in decades,
puts them back on the radar of some old
enemies and frenemies who believe they
have the device that can control the world’s
most important infrastructure.
Up until this point in the movie, things
were going quite well in the streaming feature.
Director Seth Gordon, who co-wrote
the film with Brendan O’Brien, was fully
cognizant of the fact that he had two
charisma bombs operating simultaneously
on the screen and decided to take a back
seat and let them do their thing. Whether
it was them being helicopter parents, bickering
over teenage boys with mustaches,
sparring in their bedroom, or just singing
along to Salt-N-Pepa, it was a blast to
watch them banter and perform. But then
the director takes their little film family
overseas where they can meet Emily’s
estranged former spy mother (a scenestealing
Glenn Close) and traipse around
London to throw some really big stunt
pieces into the mix. This was not the best
direction to take the film in because for
one, these set pieces, while competent,
weren’t all that impressive given their surroundings,
and for another, moving the
action into a kind of globetrotting mega-spy
sphere robbed “Back in Action” of some of
the immediacy and warmth promised by
the set up. Although these were not huge
disadvantages, it lost that sweet connection
it was forming in the first act and left
Diaz and Foxx to steer the movie through
choppy waters. Fortunately for the viewer,
these individuals are genuine movie stars
and they have what it takes to bring us
back into the action.
“Back in Action” is one of those movies
where you can tell that everyone involved
is having a good time. Those feelings translate
through the screen even if what is happening
around the cast is something lackluster,
unimaginative, and even a bit stale.
While this film is not a great piece of action
cinema, nor is it particularly hilarious, it is
a steadily entertaining piece of fun steered
by two genuine movie stars who want us to
have a good time too.
