The Grove City community is mourning

the loss of Andy Furr, who died suddenly

on Jan. 8. He was 59 years old.

“Andy was the heart of Grove City,”

said Grove City Mayor Richard “Ike”

Stage in a statement on Furr’s passing.

“Looking back, let’s not forget, he was the

Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce

Arts in the Alley Parade organizer for

many years prior to his work in the Town

Center.”

Furr was the executive director of the

Heart of Grove City, an organization that

aims to bring visitors and businesses to

the downtown Grove City area. He

helped organize and run many popular

events in Grove City including the Grove

City Wine and Arts Festival, Taco’s and

Tequila, the Grove City Christmas

Parade, and the Mistletoe Market. He

also helped to start the Food Trucks

Friday Night events in the Town Center.

The Heart of Grove City board of

directors issued a statement that said

Furr was a constant advocate for small

businesses in the Town Center.

“A lifelong Grove City resident and

avid volunteer, Andrew became the executive

director in 2012 after serving as

vice president of the organization in

2011. As a board and a community, we

are truly grateful for Andy, the impact he

made by showing off all Grove City has to

offer, and the years of service, leadership,

and direction he has given. He will be

missed by many.”

In addition to his work to promote the

city’s Town Center, Furr also served on

the Southwest Public Libraries board of

trustees. He was reappointed to a new

term as a trustee in 2022 after serving

many years beforehand.

“Andy was a dedicated board member

and incredible friend to our libraries,”

said Southwest Public Libraries Director

Meredith Wickham. “He often offered

unique support and insights that no one

else could. His advice and guidance were

invaluable, and I learned so much from

him. We will all miss him immensely.”

Furr was also a member of the

Southwest Franklin County Historical

Society and a volunteer for Lifeline of

Ohio, where he received an Ambassador of

the Year award.

Inspired by her experience employing autistic

adults at her screen-printing business, Jacquie Mahan

recognized that for many, the connection between

work and personal life is often missing.

Her solution - create a safe, inclusive space where

adults can explore creativity and build friendships.

Beginning Jan. 26, the owner of The Awesome

Company will launch The Morning Creatives, a

monthly gathering for autistic and neurodivergent

artists. The events, which will include free coffee and

the use of art supplies, will take place at The Awesome

Gallery - a space adjacent to Mahan’s screen-printing

business at 3400 Southwest Blvd., Grove City. In the

gallery, Mahan showcases the artwork of many of her

employees.

“Sometimes work isn’t enough, and I’m realizing my

employees yearn for another connection,” she said.

However, Mahan says many adults who are neurodivergent

do not have the money, connections or ability

to create a safe space for themselves where they do

not feel overwhelmed.

“There can be a discomfort for new places, loud noises

and new people that make people with autism not

want to attend events,” she said. “It’s too scary and

triggering for them.”

She says she hopes these events will create an

opportunity for autistic and neurodivergent adults to

softly make friends.

“It’s a place to unmask and create a community of

understanding and fun,” she said.

The Morning Creative gatherings will take place on

the last Sunday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon.

The gatherings are open to any autistic and neurodivergent

adults who enjoy crafts and working on projects,

but want a safe and understanding space.

“We’re going to have extra sketchbooks and supplies,

and then I’ll see how people respond to the event

and tweak them from there,” Mahan said. “There’s so

many things we can do moving forward.”

Mahan is also launching a special monthly movie

night as another opportunity for autistic and neurodivergent

artists and individuals to gather. Movie nights

will take place on the second Wednesday of every

month from 5 to 7 p.m. beginning Feb. 12.

Both gatherings are free of charge.

Creating a trusted space that accommodates those

who may have unique sensitivities or needs is important

to Mahan, she says.

“I have tackled employment with The Awesome

Company but wanted to find a way to expand social

opportunities for those who are seeking to do more outside

of work,” she said. “I want to use The Awesome

Gallery space for more than hanging autistic artists’

work. I want it to be a space for autistic people to know

they belong and can find ways to connect with each

other.”

Mahan says anyone interested in knowing more

about these monthly gatherings can email her at

info@theawesomecompany.com. Providers who have

clients with social needs are invited to reach out to her

as well, she says.

South-Western school board votes on new positions

By Dedra Cordle

Staff Writer

The South-Western City School Board of

Education has chosen its officers for the

new year.

At its organizational meeting on Jan. 6,

the board unanimously approved the nomination

of Chris Boso to serve as president.

The nomination by Kelli Martindale and

the subsequent approval marked the second

consecutive year Boso has been chosen

to serve as president of the board.

There were two nominees for the position

of vice-president: Camille Peterson

and Denise D’Angelo Steele.

Peterson was nominated by Kelli

Martindale, whereas D’Angelo Steele was

nominated by Julie Liskany.

CITY CODE

Continued from page 1

dential properties. The residential component is not

part of the state law and was added locally.

The city’s code also states that only two dispensaries

would be permitted to operate in the area.

So far, two have applied. Shangri-La Dispensary

(Ohio Holistic Health) applied for a special use permit

to dispense cannabis at the southeast corner of

Broadway and Southwest Boulevard. That proposal

was rejected. Council members had concerns about the

location. The cannabis dispensary was also located

within 500 feet of a multi-family use property.

Earlier this month, the Ohio Cannabis Company

applied for a special use permit to operate at 1947

Stringtown Road, where China Bell is currently located.

Brian Wingfield, with the Ohio Cannabis Company,

said this is an ideal location for a dispensary as it sits

on a corner lot, has a traffic signal nearby, and has two

entrance and exit points.

“We expect fewer visitors than the previous business,”

said Wingfield, in reference to the marijuana

shop having fewer customers per day than China Bell.

Wingfield asked city leaders to waive the 500-foot

requirement as the establishment is less than that distance

from residential units.

“Our goal is to show that a well-regulated, community

focused dispensary can exist near a residential

area without disrupting the character of the neighborhood,”

he said.

After a discussion at a recent meeting, the council

voted 4-2 to waive the residential restriction and allow

the company to operate at that location.

“One of my jobs on council is to do what the people

want,” said councilman Randy Holt. “There is a clear

indication that Grove City residents want recreational

and medical marijuana.”

In November 2023, Ohio voters approved Issue 2, to

legalize the cultivation, processing, and retail sale of

recreational marijuana for those over the age of 21. In

Grove City, 56 percent of voters supported this state

issue.

Council president Christine Houk and councilman

Ted Berry voted against the legislation.

Houk said the council should stick with the code

that city leaders came up with.

“It is important that we live up to the expectations

that we set,” she said.

Even though most of the council voted to waive the

rules and approve the special use permit, Grove City

The roll call for Peterson took place first.

She received two ‘yes’ votes, one coming

from Martindale and the other from herself.

The roll call for D’Angelo Steele took

place afterwards. She received ‘yes’ votes

from Boso, Liskany, Martindale, and herself.

There are no rules stipulating that

board members cannot cast a vote in favor

of their own nomination.

Boso and D’Angelo Steele will serve as

president and vice-president of the board of

education, respectively, until Dec. 31, 2025.

In addition to the selection of officers,

the board also approved a fiscal action to

set aside $35,000 from the general fund to

establish a board service fund for fiscal

year 2025-26. Under the terms of the Ohio

Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage vetoed the measure.

Stage said his objection lies with the 500 feet rule.

He said in the summer of last year, council members

agreed to allow more than 500 feet of distance between

marijuana dispensaries and residential units.

“This is contrary to what we agreed to in August,”

said Stage.

Council members were notified that Stage had

vetoed the legislation and planned to discuss the matter

at the meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21. (Note, the date

of this meeting is after the

Messenger’s deadline for the

Jan. 26 edition.)

The council would need five

votes to override the mayor’s

veto. Only four approved the

legislation earlier this month.

There is one vacant council

seat, which is open after Mark

Sigrist was elected to serve in

the Ohio House of

Representatives. The city has

received 29 applications to fill

that seat and to date, 24 have

been interviewed. Of the 29

applicants, three were not eligible,

one withdrew their application,

and one did not show up for

the interview.

The council has yet to

announce its appointment.

If the council does not have

the five votes required to override

the mayor’s veto, the legislation

will stay vetoed. The Ohio

Cannabis Company would have

to wait 30 days to reapply to

start the process over again.

The Ohio Cannabis Company

originally sought to locate its

establishment on the south side

of Stringtown Road, near

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen.

This location is also in a commercial

corridor but backs up to

residential units along

McDowell Road.

Revised Code, the board service fund can

be used to pay expenses the board incurred

in the performance of their duties or for

those of their official representatives.

The regular board meeting was held

immediately following the organizational

meeting. Among the items approved was

the master calendar for the 2025-26 school

year. In the 2025-26 calendar year, the first

day of school will take place on Aug. 20 for

students in grades 4-12 and for students in

grades K-3 whose last names begin with A-

G only. Students in

grades K-3 whose

last names begin

with the letters H-O

will have their first

day on Aug. 21 and

students whose last

names begin with the letters P-Z will have

their first day on Aug. 22.

The last day of school for all students

will be June 1.

As the temperatures dip and the air gets

crisp, it’s easy to feel like staying inside

with a warm cup of cocoa. But what if we

told you that winter in the Metro Parks is

nothing short of magical? From winter

wildlife watching, to flying down the sled

hills, there’s a whole different side of

nature to explore and enjoy during the

colder months. Throw on your coziest

sweater, grab some gloves (and maybe your

cross-country skis) and let’s dive into winter

fun.

Sledding

No winter is complete without a good

old-fashioned race down a hill covered in

snow. Whether you’re a kid or a kid at

heart, the thrill of zooming down the hill is

something everyone has a chance to enjoy

at Metro Parks. All the sledding hills are

bring your own sled and are monitored by

park staff for safety and to make sure

everyone has a great time.

Enjoy the thrill of beating your friends

to the bottom of the sled hills at Quarry

Trails, Battelle Darby Creek, Blacklick

Woods Metro Golf Course, Highbanks,

Scioto Audubon, Scioto Grove, Sharon

Woods, and Walnut Woods.

Winter Wildlife Watching

Did you know that winter is one of the

best times to see wildlife? Birds are busy

flitting through the trees, and if you’re

lucky, you might spot a deer or two making

their way through the chilly landscape.

The lack of leaves on the trees makes it

easier to see farther, so grab your binoculars

and camera, and head to your nearest

Metro Park for some winter wildlife watching.

With a little patience, you may find

woodpeckers, cardinals, or even the occasional

owl.

Don’t want to sit out in the cold? The

Nature Centers at Battelle Darby Creek,

Blacklick Woods, Blendon Woods, and

Highbanks are excellent places to sit inside

while keeping an eye out for wildlife.

Ice Skating

Glide into winter fun at one of the two

ice skating ponds at Metro Parks. Whether

you’re moving smoothly across the ice or

wobbling a bit, ice skating at Metro Parks

is always a blast. This activity is only available

at Blendon Woods and Battelle Darby

Creek, and can only happen if it’s cold

enough for the water to freeze. We make

sure there are at least four inches of solid

ice across the entire area of the pond before

opening the skating ponds to the public.

Bring your own skates. Check our social

media to see if the skating ponds are open,

or call 614-370-6254 for the skating pond

at Battelle Darby Creek, and 614-620-1861

for the skating pond at Blendon Woods.

Winter Hiking

The air is crisp, the trails are quieter,

and there’s a certain calm that comes with

the sound of crunching snow beneath your

boots. If you’re looking for a peaceful stroll

www.columbusmessenger.com

Winter activities at the

Franklin Co. Metro Parks

through nature, a winter hike in Metro

Parks is the perfect way to reconnect with

the great outdoors. Plus, you can join in on

our Winter Hikes Series to earn a patch for

completing seven hikes in seven parks.

Cross-Country Skiing

Ready to add a little chill to your workout?

Metro Parks has cross-country skiing

trails where you can glide through winter’s

serene landscape. Whether you’re an experienced

skier or a newbie, it’s an exhilarating

way to get some fresh air and explore

the beauty of the parks during the colder

months. Cross-country skiers are welcome

to use any Metro Parks trail when snow

conditions permit skiing, but five parks

have dedicated trails that are reserved

solely for cross-country skiing when we

have snow. Please bring your own skis. The

five parks are Battelle Darby Creek (Dyer

Mill Ski Trail), Blendon Woods (Sugarbush

Trail), Glacier Ridge (Savannah Trail),

Highbanks (Coyote Run and Scenic River

Trails) and Prairie Oaks (Bridle and

Coneflower Trails).

Snowshoeing, Arts and Crafts,

Campfires, and More

Of course, just like any other time of

year, Metro Parks Outdoor Adventure and

each individual park offers tons of fun winter

programs. Try snowshoeing with

Outdoor Adventure, join the naturalists for

a hike, make s’mores over a campfire, and

more. There are multiple ways to find all

the free and fun programs offered at Metro

Parks.

Winter Tips and Tricks

Dress in layers: Winter temperatures

can fluctuate throughout the day, so it’s

best to wear at least a couple of layers.

Keep your pets safe and comfortable: If

you’re bringing your dog along for the

adventure, be mindful of the cold. Shorthaired

breeds and older dogs are especially

vulnerable to the cold. Bring booties to protect

their paws from salt and ice, and make

sure they’re warm and dry after outdoor

activities. All pets are required to stay on a

leash at Metro Parks unless otherwise

specified. Find pet-friendly trails and activities

on our website.

Bring snacks and water: Even though

it’s cold, staying hydrated is important. It’s

easy to forget to drink water in the winter,

but you’ll need it for energy on longer hikes

or during high-energy activities like sledding

and skiing.

Whether you’re out exploring nature on

a hike, zooming down a sledding hill, or

cozying up by a fire, the parks offer something

for everyone. So, bundle up, embrace

the chill, and get outside to enjoy all the

winter magic these beautiful parks have to

offer.

A Successful Start in 2025

As we embark on this new year, I want to reflect on 2024

and share my gratitude for the incredible privilege of

serving you in the Ohio Senate. We achieved remarkable

milestones together, and I am optimistic about

what lies ahead. I was honored to take the oath of office

in January as we officially began the 136th General Assembly.

From day one, my commitment has been to

work with my constituents and the great people of

Ohio. I focus on crafting policies that uplift families,

strengthen communities, and create opportunities for

all Ohioans to thrive. Due to redistricting, my district will

now include parts of Franklin, Pickaway, and Madison

Counties. I am excited about this change and the opportunity

to expand my advocacy at the Statehouse to

my new constituents. One of the highlights of 2024 was

attending the Governor’s bill signings on several important

pieces of legislation I championed. It was indeed a

proud moment to see our collective efforts result in

meaningful changes that will positively impact lives

across the state:

● SB 95 – Authorizing the Use of Tele-Pharmacy

Services: This legislation expands access to

pharmaceutical care in underserved areas,

everaging technology to ensure that all Ohioans

have the resources to manage their health effectively.

● HB 8 – The “Parents Bill of Rights: ”A landmark

measure empowering parents with greater

involvement in their children’s education and

ensuring transparency in the decisions that

affect our future generations.

● HB 173 – Designating “Ohio Black Media Week:”

This bill celebrates the vital contributions

of Black media outlets in our state, recognizing

heir role in amplifying voices, sharing stories,

and fostering informed communities. I am pleased

to announce my committee assignments for the

136th General Assembly. These roles position me

These roles position me to address key issues

and advocate for policies that matter most to our

communities:

1. Housing (Chair): Leading efforts to address

housing affordability and accessibility across Ohio.

2. Judiciary (Vice Chair): Supporting a fair and

3. Workforce Development (Vice Chair): Promoting

initiatives to build a skilled and competitive

You want to honor a friend and support the

on how to express yourself to the grieving family.

Sharing a fond memory is always appreciated and

shows how their loved one impacted your life.

Etiquette expert, Elaine Swann, suggests, “My

condolences to you and the entire family” or My

thoughts are with you” are always safe bets. Keep

it short and simple. Well intentioned statements

like “He is in a better place” or “The pain will

lessen in time” can feel insensitive. And if the

right words don’t flow naturally, a hug by itself is

often all you need.

How to help:

Sympathy cards and food are always appreciated.

Flowers, when religiously appropriate, or

donations to a special cause, are extra ways to

express your sympathy. Later, when the gatherings

are over, is often when your friends will need

support, so check in on them then.

Be yourself:

Remember, the grieving family appreciates

any act of kindness. Be present and sincere, and

your compassion will be a comfort.

Chandra

Wingo

Director

Dear Franklin County Seniors,

It’s a pleasure to introduce myself as the

Director of the Franklin County Office on

Aging (FCOA). My journey to this role is

deeply personal, shaped by a commitment

to service and family. Growing up as the eldest

of three children in Columbus, I witnessed

firsthand the importance of community

and care, values instilled in me by my

grandmother, who often reminded me to

work hard and dream big.

My path also led me to become a caregiver—a

role that taught me the challenges

and rewards of supporting loved ones. That

experience drives my passion for helping

older adults maintain their independence

and live with dignity.

At FCOA, we offer services like home-delivered

meals, caregiver support, minor home

repairs, and protective services for older

adults to ensure they have what they need

to thrive. Whether it’s providing resources or

simply being a helping hand, our mission is

to make aging in place not just a possibility

but a right for every senior in Franklin

County.

If you or someone you know could use our

support, please call us at (614) 525-6200 or

visit officeonaging.org. We’re here for you!

Warmly,

PAGE 10 - GROVE CITY MESSENGER - January 26, 2025

A vital piece that has been missing in

the action-comedy genre as of late — besides

a truly original plot, that is — is the lack of

genuine movie stars featured within. In an

effort to be kind and courteous to the upand-coming

actors and the well-known

faces who are cast in their stead, they

(mostly) do an admirable job of selling

these humorously violent tales to the masses,

but it is the presence of the genuine

movie star that can make even the most

standard of the bunch pop off the screen.

“Back in Action,” the latest action-comedy

released by Netflix, understands the

power of the genuine movie star and it uses

that to their advantage. This is not a movie

that is propelled by a great script — it often

comes across as the first draft submission —

but it doesn’t have to be great because it

has Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz speaking

its words. It also does not contain that

much humor or quality action either but it

doesn’t have to because Foxx is there making

everything sound and look much cooler

than it is and Diaz is selling the material

with her expressive face that can go from

“Let’s be best friends” to “I am going to rip

off your face” in a matter of second. To be

honest, or even more honest, this movie

isn’t even particularly good, but once again

it doesn’t have to be because it has these

charming and charismatic individuals

throwing their charm and charisma all

over the place.

This is a film that knows it is not a great

piece of cinematic art, but it effortlessly

wields the power of the genuine movie star

and transforms this feature into something

that is fun and completely entertaining.

With the suaveness of the starring cast,

their easy chemistry, and the occasionally

decent action sequence, this movie

demands that you look past all of its flaws

and have an enjoyable time.

“Back in Action” begins 15 years in the

past, when Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz)

were two of the best agents in the CIA.

While on a mission to procure a device that

had the ability to control all of the world’s

most important infrastructure, the pair

were double-crossed and barely escaped

with their lives. This normally would have

been no big deal for the duo — after all, they

have had several brushes with death in the

past - but shortly before escaping the rogue

plane Emily discovered that she was pregnant

with Matt’s child. Believing that this

is some kind of sign to get out of the business

— “Kids don’t mix well with this line of

work,” quips Matt — they use their close

call with oblivion to say goodbye to the spy

game and fake their own deaths.

The film then leaps to the present and

we see that the former spies are living a

painfully ordinary life of suburban

American normalcy. Matt is the head coach

of a youth soccer team; Emily has a job selling

custom puzzles on Etsy; and their

In Entertainment

“Back in Action” is a flick filled with fun

teenage children Alice (McKenna Roberts)

and Leo (Rylan Jackson) think their parents

are hopelessly lame. That belief in the

lameness of their parents begins to change,

however, when they go viral after beating

up some college twerps who were hitting on

the underage Alice. This action, which

admittedly made Matt and Emily “feel

truly alive” for the first time in decades,

puts them back on the radar of some old

enemies and frenemies who believe they

have the device that can control the world’s

most important infrastructure.

Up until this point in the movie, things

were going quite well in the streaming feature.

Director Seth Gordon, who co-wrote

the film with Brendan O’Brien, was fully

cognizant of the fact that he had two

charisma bombs operating simultaneously

on the screen and decided to take a back

seat and let them do their thing. Whether

it was them being helicopter parents, bickering

over teenage boys with mustaches,

sparring in their bedroom, or just singing

along to Salt-N-Pepa, it was a blast to

watch them banter and perform. But then

the director takes their little film family

overseas where they can meet Emily’s

estranged former spy mother (a scenestealing

Glenn Close) and traipse around

London to throw some really big stunt

pieces into the mix. This was not the best

direction to take the film in because for

one, these set pieces, while competent,

www.columbusmessenger.com

The Reel Deal

Dedra Cordle

weren’t all that impressive given their surroundings,

and for another, moving the

action into a kind of globetrotting mega-spy

sphere robbed “Back in Action” of some of

the immediacy and warmth promised by

the set up. Although these were not huge

disadvantages, it lost that sweet connection

it was forming in the first act and left

Diaz and Foxx to steer the movie through

choppy waters. Fortunately for the viewer,

these individuals are genuine movie stars

and they have what it takes to bring us

back into the action.

“Back in Action” is one of those movies

where you can tell that everyone involved

is having a good time. Those feelings translate

through the screen even if what is happening

around the cast is something lackluster,

unimaginative, and even a bit stale.

While this film is not a great piece of action

cinema, nor is it particularly hilarious, it is

a steadily entertaining piece of fun steered

by two genuine movie stars who want us to

have a good time too.

Managing Editor

Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio

(SWACO) officials believe recycling is key

in controlling the amount of trash that

ends up in landfills.

“Recycling is important for many reasons:

It conserves the natural resources

that would be used to create virgin material,

it reduces energy consumption (for

instance, recycling aluminum cans uses

90% less energy than virgin aluminum), it

supports the circular economy and Ohio

businesses, and it reduces reliance on the

landfill and extends its life,” said SWACO

Communities Program Administrator

Karen Seidel

SWACO is a political subdivision of the

State of Ohio formed under House Bill 592,

and it owns and operates the Franklin

County Sanitary Landfill.

“Our mission is to ‘champion transformational

diversion programs & safe disposal

of the waste stream,’” said Seidel. “We do

not process recyclables, but we offer many

different programs designed to increase

recycling in Franklin County.”

These programs include:

•Facilitating the consortium program

for participating communities to ensure

they can provide the best trash, recycling

and yard waste services to their residents

at the most competitive rates;

•Public education and outreach. See

recycleright.org for a good example of our

recycling education efforts.

“It’s a great resource for residents with

questions about what can be recycled,” said

Seidel.

•Providing grants, resources and technical

assistance to communities, businesses,

non-profit organizations and schools

that want to recycle or improve their recycling

programs; and

•Offering recycling and safe disposal

options for hard-to-recycle items to

Franklin County residents at our Recycling

Convenience Center and Household

Hazardous Waste Facility.

How much is actually recycled?

When asked about reports from around

the country that only a percentage of recyclable

material that is gathered is actually

recycled, Seidel said, “We have seen these

reports as well. Fortunately, they do not

represent the situation in Central Ohio at

all. Rumpke, the company that processes

the majority of residential recycling in

Franklin County, indicates that the contamination

rate at their recycling facility is

less than 10 percent, meaning more than

90 percent of the material that is delivered

to their recycling facility is recycled (the

rest are things that aren’t recyclable). That

is an amazingly low contamination rate

and is a result of good recycling habits by

our residents and businesses. It’s also a

result of the recycling education efforts

made by SWACO and others. In addition,

more than 80 percent of what we recycle in

Central Ohio goes on to have new life in a

new product right here in Ohio. We’re fortunate

to be in a state with a strong circular

recycling economy that supports almost

400 recycling-reliant businesses employing

more than 5,000 of our Ohio neighbors.”

She said virtually all the residential

recycling collected in Franklin County is

processed at a new, $100 million Rumpke

Recycling facility in Columbus.

“It’s the largest such facility in North

America,” said Seidel. “This state-of-the art

facility employs 60 people to process up to

250,000 tons of recycling each year from

nearly 50 Ohio counties. Rumpke offers

tours of the facility in operation — it’s worth

seeing in person to understand the efforts

that are being made to get this material to

the manufacturers that can use it as a raw

material to be made into new items.

Rumpke is also expanding the list of items

that can be recycled at its new facility,

including clear clamshell containers like

the ones that berries or pastries might

come in.”

Recycled products

When asked what kinds of products, etc.

are produced from materials that are recycled

in central Ohio, Seidel said, “A variety

of items, including new cardboard boxes,

www.columbusmessenger.com

SWACO offers many programs to help reduce waste

aluminum cans, and glass bottles, in addition

to things like plastic lumber and fiberglass

insulation. You can find examples

and other information on our Circular Ohio

website.”

The Franklin County Sanitary Landfill

is the only landfill in Franklin County

where municipal solid waste (household

and business trash) can be disposed of. The

current life expectancy for the landfill is

about 40 years. There are two other landfills

in Franklin County for construction

and demolition material.

SWACO recycling expansion

SWACO’s Recycling Convenience

Center opened in November 2023 as the

first-of-its-kind facility in Franklin County

to accept hard to recycle household items

like tires, batteries, food waste and

Styrofoam. SWACO is making the center

more convenient for residents to use by

removing paint fees and expanding the list

of materials accepted.

The center will also now collect plastic

prescription pill bottles from residents for

recycling. While over-the-counter pill bottles

can be recycled in curbside recycling

carts, plastic prescription bottles and their

lids are not accepted curbside. Plastic prescription

bottles brought to the Recycling

Convenience Center should be empty, and

the bottles will be recycled with Industrial

Recyclers in Sydney, Ohio.

In addition to the expanded list of materials

accepted, SWACO is removing the $1

per can fee previously charged for the recycling

of household latex paint. Now latex

and all other household paint are accepted

for free from residents.

The center is accepting several seasonal

items this year including pumpkins and

gourds, outdoor and holiday string lights,

live evergreen trees, wreaths and garland

(free from decoration) and leaves. These

items will be collected annually during the

seasons in which they’re in demand.

•Bagged leaves will be accepted through

Jan. 31 (paper bags only, no plastic bags).

•Live holiday trees and greenery free of

decorations, tinsel and plastic will be

accepted through Jan. 31

•Holiday string lights are accepted

year-round in the bins marked for electronic

or e-Waste.

Since opening a year ago, the center has

helped over 2,000 customers to divert more

than 190,000 pounds of material from the

landfill, the equivalent of six school buses.

The Recycling Convenience Center is

located at 2566 Jackson Pike in Columbus

and is operational Monday through Friday

from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday

from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents can

drive up to the convenience center and

unload their recyclable and other materials,

placing them in designated and clearly

marked bins or areas. SWACO’s center is

staffed to assist residents and collect fees

for some of the materials accepted at this

facility.

For information, including a full list of

accepted materials, visit SWACO.org/RCC.

with Winter Crisis Program

Tax-Aide volunteers needed

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program,

which provides free tax preparation

for senior citizens at The Naz Church in

Grove City and more than 200 other locations

across Ohio, is looking for volunteer

tax preparers for next year.

Last tax season, volunteers working at

Grove City filed 427 federal and state

returns, primarily for senior citizens, saving

them an estimated $110,000 in tax

preparation fees and enabling them to collect

more than $375,000 in refunds.

Anyone who does their own taxes is an

ideal candidate for the all-volunteer program.

Volunteers receive IRS-approved

training, work on AARP Foundation-provided

computers and are mentored

throughout the tax season.

Volunteers come from all walks of life,

including beauticians, accountants, truck

drivers, and managers. Volunteers who

prefer not to prepare tax returns are also

needed to do such things as manage taxpayer

appointments and see that taxpayers

have the necessary paperwork.

With icy temperatures and severe winter

weather hitting much of Ohio, the state

of Ohio is urging residents to take advantage

of a program designed to keep homes

warm and families safe.

The Ohio Department of Development’s

Home Energy Assistance Winter Crisis

Program provides income-eligible Ohioans

one-time assistance managing their home

energy bill. The program runs through

March 31.

“With some of the coldest weather of the

season expected to come our way, it’s more

important than ever to ensure every

Ohioan stays safe and warm,” said Lydia

Mihalik, director of the Department of

Development. “The Winter Crisis Program

is here to provide that critical support in

these bitter and challenging conditions.”

The Winter Crisis Program assists

Ohioans facing service disconnection, those

who have already been disconnected, individuals

needing to establish new service,

those required to pay for a service transfer,

and those with a Percentage of Income

Payment Plan (PIPP) default or who need

to make their first PIPP payment. It also

supports households with 25 percent or

less of bulk fuel in their tank to maintain

service. Qualifying households must have

a gross annual income at or below 175 percent

of the federal poverty level. For a family

of four, that is $54,600.

Last year, the Winter Crisis Program

assisted nearly 77,000 households in Ohio,

providing a total of $23.5 million in benefits.

Households serviced by a Public

Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO)-regulated

utility must sign up for PIPP or

another payment plan if there is still an

outstanding balance on the utility bill after

receiving assistance.

Ohioans can start their application

online but must schedule an appointment

with their local energy assistance provider

to complete the application. Depending on

the agency, the appointment may be in

person, on the phone, or remotely. The

application and list of providers can be

found online at energyhelp.ohio.gov.

Clients need to bring copies of the following

documents to their appointment:

•Copies of their most-recent energy

bills, if available

•A list of all household members and

proof of income for the last 30 days or 12

months for each member

•Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency

for all household members

•Proof of disability, if applicable

For more information about the Winter

Crisis Program, visit energyhelp.ohio.gov.
