SKINNER
Good afternoon and welcome to Chigwell Construction Stadium for
today’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Everton....
I’d like to welcome Brian
Sørensen, his staff and
players to east London for the
game today.
We’re really pleased to be back
at home and in front of our fans as
we look to build on a really positive
display on Wednesday evening
against Tottenham Hotspur in the
Women’s League Cup.
I’m delighted for the players and
staff because everyone worked so
hard on the night. We had to make
sure that we did all parts of the
game well and turned the game
around after going behind early on.
I think it showed what a great
group we have here. With that kind
of attitude and approach, as well
as the effort and motivation that all
of the players put in, it felt like the
performance epitomised what it
means to play for West Ham.
Overall, it’s great for the Football
Club to be in a semi-final and
we’re really looking forward to
that game against Chelsea at the
beginning of February.
During the week, we welcomed
Verena Hanshaw to the Club as
our first signing of the January
window. Verena is a left-footed
defender that has great technical
ability, and she will suit our style
of play.
Her experience will also be a real
asset for us. She has played well
over 100 times for Austria and has
excelled at a number of previous
major tournaments. Verena also
has Champions League experience
at previous clubs, which will help
“WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO
MAKE THIS GROUND A
REALLY TOUGH PLACE TO
COME FOR THE MAJORITY
OF OUR MATCHES THIS
SEASON, AND WE WILL
NEED YOU TO BE LOUD
TO HELP US AGAIN TODAY
AS WE LOOK TO TAKE
ALL THREE POINTS”
her adapt to the WSL. I’m really
pleased that we were able to bring
her to West Ham, and I think she’ll
be a firm hit with our supporters
because she will give everything
for the badge.
We’re looking forward to putting
things right in front of our home
crowd today. Our performance
away at Tottenham was a lot more
like us, and now we want to do the
same in front of a home crowd.
We know that momentum will be
important as we navigate through
this busy period of matches,
and we all want to get a winning
run going.
Thank you for your support
as always! We have been able to
make this ground a really tough
place to come for the majority of
our matches this season, and we
will need you to be loud to help us
again today as we look to take all
three points.

Good afternoon and welcome back to Chigwell Construction Stadium...
We’re pleased to be back
at home and in front of
our fans today as we
take on Everton in the
Barclays Women’s Super League.
We come into this game off
the back of a big high after
beating Tottenham Hotspur in
the quarter-finals of the Women’s
League Cup. It was a great way for
the group to bounce back from
the disappointment of losing to
Chelsea last weekend, and I think
it was a performance that showed
the strength and character of
the squad.
It gives us an opportunity to
continue moving forward and
taking positives into this busy run
of games that we have where
every game is so important.
It meant so much to all of us
to make it to the semi-finals,
and now we have to carry
that momentum with us into
today’s game.
We’ve welcomed Verena
Hanshaw into the group this week.
We’re all really excited to play with
“I’D LIKE TO THANK THE
FANS FOR THEIR SUPPORT
LAST WEEKEND, AND ALSO
AWAY AT TOTTENHAM ON
WEDNESDAY EVENING.
WE WILL NEED YOU ALL
TO BE LOUD AND PROUD
THIS AFTERNOON”
her and I’m sure she’ll be a brilliant
addition to the squad. On behalf
of the squad, I wish her all the
best during her time here in Claret
and Blue.
Today, we have to make sure
that we make a good start in
front of our own fans, get at
Everton from the first whistle and
make life really difficult for them.
They are a good side with lots of
quality, but we know that if we
play our own game, we can come
away with the result that we want.
I’d like to thank the fans for
their support last weekend,
and also away at Tottenham on
Wednesday evening. We will need
you all to be loud and proud this
afternoon as we go in search of
another three points!

WEST HAM UNITED WOMEN’S
TEAM HAVE A NEW CO-CHAIR OF
THE SUPPORTERS’ BOARD:
ALLIE HEPPELL!
Heppell took over the reins
at the beginning of the
calendar year and will join
current co-chair Peter
Tyler in helping to raise and
discuss the topics and issues that
are most important to the fans.
“It’s a bit surreal because Jo
[Bailey, former co-chair] and Peter
have done such a good job so
far,” said Heppell. “It’s a lot to live
up to, but I’m really excited to get
started. It’s all full steam ahead.
“I’ve been a West Ham fan
since I was seven years old. I was
born in Stratford and grew up in
Dagenham. My mum’s a die-hard
West Ham fan, so if I picked any
other team to support she would
kill me! It was always going to be
West Ham.
“I really got into women’s
football around the time of
the 2015 World Cup and West
Ham had a team that I couldn’t
quite follow because I live in
Manchester, so I went to watch
Manchester City for a bit.
“But as soon as West Ham got
into the WSL, I started making the
journey down from Manchester
week in, week out, and I’ve been a
season-ticket holder ever since.”
Heppell continued: “The
supporter services team is massive
to the Club, we’re that direct link
between the fans and the Club.
We’ve seen some massive changes
so far and we want to keep more
changes coming for the good.”
Having previously worked on
the supporter services board as
an Away Representative, Heppell
hopes to keep growing the
Hammers’ following up and down
the country.
“I want us to have a really good
away support,” said Heppell.
“My big aim is that I want to get
as many of us going to games
away from home. We’ve made
Dagenham a fortress, and I want
to be able to do that away from
home as well.
“West Ham fans have really
come on board for their women’s
team, specifically over the last
couple of seasons. You can always
hear us singing. If you watch back
any of the games, you can always
hear us chanting Bubbles. The
support at home has been huge
for the team, and I would love for
us to sell out at Dagenham.
“I don’t want there to be a
divide between the men’s and
women’s teams, we’re a West Ham
family. I want people to come
and support the West Ham team,
regardless of who’s on the pitch.”

HANSHAW
20 January was a very special day for Verena Hanshaw, as she became
a West Ham United women’s team player – and it was her birthday!

WEST HAM UNITED WOMEN | PLAYER FOCUS
Verena Hanshaw
The versatile defender, who
joined from Serie A side
AS Roma, was coming
to the final part of her
media duties at Chadwell
Heath when she was presented
with a birthday cake to mark
the occasion.
With surprise and joy in her
eyes, the Austria international
gratefully took the cake and made
a wish before blowing out the
candles. She kept her lips sealed
on what she wished for, but
there’s no harm in guessing that
it was for a successful career in
Claret and Blue.
There were multiple reasons why
the 31-year-old joined West Ham
United: the unity around the Club,
the chance to showcase what she
can do in the best league in the
world, but also the conversations
she had with certain people.
Hanshaw revealed her chats with
manager Rehanne Skinner aligned
perfectly with her values on and
off the pitch, as they spoke about
future goals and how the boss
sees her new arrival integrating in
the team. The conversations were
‘perfect’, as Hanshaw described.
However, Skinner was not the
only person connected to the
Club that Hanshaw spoke to, as
she contacted Hammers past and
present ahead of her move.
Shekiera Martinez, who signed
for West Ham in the summer,
played with Hanshaw for six years
at Frankfurt, and the pair built a
strong friendship in that time.
“We talked a lot, actually!”
beamed Hanshaw. “We had a few
phone calls and I’m super happy
to be reunited with Shekiera.
We played a few years together
and we know how we both
think, and her opinion was super
important to me.
“I also spoke with my bestie
Hawa Cissoko, in Rome, and
she just reconfirmed everything
14WWW.WHUFC.COM
2024/25
that Shekiera said. Everything
just felt good.
“I was really close with Hawa and
I’m really sad [to be leaving her].
I’m going to miss her!”
Like Martinez and Cissoko,
Hanshaw has played on the
international stage. Boasting more
than 100 appearances for her
country, Hanshaw was the only
Austrian to be named in the UEFA
Women’s Euro 2017 Best Eleven
after helping her side reach the
semi-finals of the tournament.
She has also represented her
country at UEFA Women’s Euro
2022, where she started all four
matches as Austria reached the
quarter-finals of the competition.
Born in Vienna, our new No29’s
footballing journey began with
USC Landhaus Wien in 2009.
Two years later, Hanshaw
joined BV Cloppenburg where
she spent the next three seasons,
making over 60 appearances and
scoring ten times as the Club
won promotion to Germany’s top
flight in 2012/13.
Following moves to SC Freiburg
and SC Sand, Hanshaw signed for
Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer
of 2018. She enjoyed a six-year
stay at the Frauen-Bundesliga
outfit, making more than 110
appearances and featuring in
many UEFA Women’s Champions
League matches.
Hanshaw then moved to AS
Roma last summer and played
13 matches in all competitions
for Le Giallorosse, including their
3-1 victory over Fiorentina on
6 January, as her former side
clinched the Supercoppa Italiana.
And now, Hanshaw is excited for
a new chapter in her career, as she
looks to help propel the Irons to
success in the Barclays Women’s
Super League.
“It was always a big dream for
me to play in the WSL,” she said.
“That’s why I’m really, really excited
and happy that I get this chance
now to compete with some of the
best players [in the world].
“I’m so ready to push myself
daily, to work hard with the team
and I hope we can all make each
other proud.
“I’m definitely a big, big team
player. It’s always hard to talk about
yourself, but I would describe
myself as an experienced, calm
player. And besides that, I like
to work hard with the team,
for the team.
“I don’t mind going the extra
mile, and I think it’s just super
important to not forget why we
all play football. The reason why
we started is because we love the
game so much and I think the joy
and the fun should not be missed.”
Having not been in the
matchday squad for Wednesday
night’s heroics against Tottenham
Hotspur in the Subway® Women’s
League Cup, Hanshaw could
make her West Ham debut for
this afternoon’s WSL fixture
with Everton.
And to say Hanshaw is excited to
play in front of the Claret and Blue
supporters is an understatement.
She said: “I’ve heard a lot about
the fans, especially how supportive
and proud they are [of the team],
and I hope I can repay them with
my personality and qualities.
“And who doesn’t like to
be welcomed into a stadium
with bubbles?”

WEST HAM UNITED WOMEN | OPPOSITION
WORDS: JONNY CHICK
Meet The Opposition
EVERTON
After finishing eighth in the
Barclays Women’s Super
League standings last term,
Everton have found wins
hard to come by this season.
It looked like they were going
to slip to a sixth league defeat this
term, last weekend against Aston
Villa, but Veatriki Sarri conjured up
an 89th-minute equaliser to earn
the Toffees a valuable 1-1 draw.
Although they sit ninth in the
table heading into this afternoon’s
encounter, Everton went into the
winter break with a history-making
victory under their belt, beating
Manchester City for the first time
in the WSL courtesy of a 2-1
success at Walton Hall Park.
The Toffees are unbeaten
against the Hammers in the
last four meetings between the
two sides, but with only a place
and two points separating the
teams ahead of kick-off, the
stage is set for another eyecatching
encounter at Chigwell
Construction Stadium.
TRANSFER
INS AND OUTS
Everton have not rested on
their laurels this January,
having recruited five new
players at the time of writing:
Kelly Gago (striker), Martina
Fernandez (defender), Emma
Watson (midfielder), Hayley
Ladd (midfielder) and Louna
Ribadeira (forward).
Arguably the most
eye-catching of the five
is the addition of Wales
international Ladd, who
joined after spending
six-and-a-half seasons at
Manchester United, providing
experience and versatility to
the Toffees’ backline.
These moves follow
Everton’s six additions
made in the summer, which
include former Hammers
midfielder Honoka Hayashi,
who has scored two goals
in 12 appearances for the
Merseyside club so far this
term.
20WWW.WHUFC.COM
2024/25
ONES TO WATCH
MEGAN FINNIGAN
Defender
From an Everton academy player
to club captain, one-club player
Megan Finnigan has established
herself as an important leader at
the Toffees. The 26-year-old made
her debut for the Merseyside outfit
ten years ago and has gone onto
make 164 appearances for them. A
former England U21 international,
who has also represented her
country at U17, U19 and U20
level, Finnigan has played every
minute in the WSL for Everton
this term – impressing in the air
and proving a vital part of Brian
Sørensen’s backline.
HONOKA HAYASHI
Midfielder
Ex-Hammer Hayashi will be facing
her former side for the first time
since she departed the club in the
summer. The Japan international
might have spent only two
seasons in Claret and Blue, but
chalked up 50 appearances for
West Ham, as she maintained her
role of an ever-present figure in
midfield. Prior to her stint at the
Irons, Hayashi played for Swedish
Damallsvenskan side AIK Fotboll.
The 26-year-old netted what
proved to be Everton’s winning
goal in their 2-1 victory at home
to Manchester City before the
Christmas break, firing a low, rightfooted
strike beyond the dive of
Khiara Keeting before half-time.
KATJA SNOEIJS
Forward
Although she will have wanted
to net more than one goal in
the WSL this term, Katja Snoeijs
has been a goalscorer for every
team she’s played for. The
28-year-old joined Everton in
2022 from Bordeaux, for whom
she enjoyed a scoring record of
24 goals in 47 games. But she
really thrived in front of goal at
PSV Eindhoven, bagging 33 goals
in almost as many games for the
Dutch outfit between 2018 and
2020. And across three seasons
at AZ Alkmaar, the Netherlands
international found the back of
the net on 53 occasions, and will
hope to find that red-hot form in
front of goal this afternoon.
THE MANAGER...
Brian Sørensen
This is Brian Sørensen’s second full season in charge of Everton, having taken over
the reins of the Merseyside outfit in April 2022.
His appointment at the Toffees marked his first job in England’s top flight, having
previously spent his managing career in his home country, Denmark, coaching FC
Nordsjælland, IK Skovbakken, and, most notably, Fortuna Hjørring – where he
stayed for seven years across two spells at the club.
Also during his time at Fortuna Hjørring, Sørensen guided the Danish side to
the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2016, having
lifted his first Danish Championship two years prior.

WEST HAM UNITED WOMEN | FOUNDATION
MOORE FAMILY FOUNDATION:
EMPOWERING LIVES THROUGH
MENTORSHIP – REFLECTING ON THE
CRYSTAL PALACE AWARENESS FIXTURE
The West Ham United men’s
fixture against Crystal Palace
on 18 January spotlighted the
transformative work of the Moore
Family Foundation (MFF), aligning
perfectly with National Mentoring
Month.
In partnership with the West
Ham United Foundation, the
initiative has been instrumental
in shaping young lives through
innovative programmes, designed
to provide academic, mentoring,
and life-skills support to those
outside mainstream education.
EMPOWERING YOUNG
PEOPLE THROUGH
EDUCATION AND
MENTORSHIP
Celebrated in January, National
Mentoring Month is a chance
to raise awareness about the
value of mentoring. It’s a time
to recognise mentors and
encourage people to become
mentors themselves.
The Moore Family Foundation
programme offers a lifeline to
young people who face challenges
in traditional educational settings.
By combining academic and
life-skills development with
football-themed activities, the
initiative delivers a comprehensive
experience that equips participants
with the tools to succeed in life.
One of the programme’s
most impactful features is its
focus on nationally-recognised
qualifications, including:
• Level 1 and Level 2 Sports
Leadership
• FA PlayMaker Award
• Level 1 FA Talent Identification
• Level 1 Business Administration
These qualifications not
only enhance participants’
employability, but also help to
build their confidence. In addition,
each participant is assigned a
mentor from the West Ham
United Foundation, who creates
a personalised development
plan to ensure tailored support
throughout the programme’s
duration. To further enrich the
experience, participants are also
treated to termly ‘enrichment
days’, which include activities such
as stadium tours and external
excursions, to help inspire and
motivate them.
INSPIRATION FROM
THE INAUGURAL
GALA DINNER
A significant milestone for
the Moore Family Foundation
came at the West Ham United
Foundation’s recent inaugural
gala dinner, an event that
celebrated the achievements
of young people while raising
awareness of the Foundation’s
vital work.

2024/25
Among the evening’s highlights
was the presentation of the Rising
Star Award to Thalia Lewis. The
award was presented by actor
Ray Winstone and Moore Family
Foundation founder Roberta
Moore, daughter of West Ham
legend Bobby Moore, whose
enduring legacy inspires the
programme.
Thalia’s story exemplifies the
programme’s impact. Overcoming
the risk of disengagement from
mainstream education, she thrived
under the mentorship provided by
the Foundation. Thalia completed
the Moore Family Foundation
programme, gained her Sports
Leadership qualifications, and
became a powerful advocate for
others. She has since supported
her peers through the Care Leaver
programme, embodying the
Foundation’s mission to inspire
and empower.
Speaking at the Foundation
Gala Dinner, MFF Founder Roberta
Moore said: “We’ve reached out
to so many young people over
the years and helped transform
their lives.
“It’s been lovely to see Thalia
receive the award tonight. She’s
such an inspirational young
woman who just embodies
everything that I’d hoped the
foundation would be, and how it
would help young people.”
KEY HIGHLIGHTS AND
ACHIEVEMENTS
In the year ahead, the MFF will
work with three alternative
provisions to provide bespoke
individualised support for
almost 50 young people.
Looking back on the past year,
the programme has celebrated
several significant milestones,
showcasing the breadth and
depth of its impact:
Celebrating Excellence: Recent
programme completer Thalia,
presented with the Female
Rising Star Award, highlights the
life-changing potential of the
programme.
Expanding Reach: Partnerships
with two new schools have
extended the programme’s
influence to more young people
in need.
Skills Development: 25
participants enrolled in Level 1
and Level 2 Sports Leadership
qualifications, while four
completed their FA Playmaker
course, and three achieved their
Level 1 Business Administration
qualification.
Enrichment Opportunities: Six
enrichment days were delivered,
providing participants with
unforgettable experiences that
broaden their horizons and inspire
their ambitions.
SPORT AS A TOOL FOR
TRANSFORMATION
By blending physical activities
with classroom-based learning,
the MFF programme instils
essential values such as
teamwork, leadership, resilience,
and responsibility.
This approach uses the appeal
of football, creating a platform that
not only engages participants, but
also fosters their personal growth.
Mentors play a vital role in guiding
young people through challenges,
while the qualifications they earn
give them a platform to build on
as they prepare for life beyond the
programme.
A LEGACY OF HOPE
AND OPPORTUNITY
As the Moore Family Foundation
continues to grow, it remains a
beacon of hope for young people
who face barriers to education
and employment.
The Foundation’s commitment
to providing mentorship,
qualifications, and life-enriching
experiences ensures that every
participant has the opportunity to
achieve their potential.
The story of Thalia is a powerful
reminder of what’s possible when
young people are given the right
support and opportunities. From
disengagement to becoming a
role model, Thalia’s journey is a
testament to the life-changing
work of the Moore Family
Foundation. For more information

FAVOURITES
KINGA SZEMIK DISCUSSES HER FAVOURITE THINGS FROM
MUSIC, TO HOLIDAYS TO BOX SETS AND FILMS!
BOX SET OR TV SERIES...
Evanescence. I used to listen to
them loads growing up!
BOX SET OR TV SERIES...
Game of Thrones is definitely up
there, I also like The Mentalist. But
I don’t watch TV too much.
FILM...
Interstellar – I think the idea [of
the film] is perfect and it’s quite
eye opening. It showed me that
all we have is time, so we have to
appreciate what we have in the
moment. And Christopher Nolan is
very good in it.
PHONE APP...
Instagram or Spotify. Music is
always with me!
COMPUTER GAME...
Right now, I’m playing Assassin’s
Creed on the computer.
HOLIDAY DESTINATION...
Home, in Poland. I love the place,
but I love the people the most.
OTHER SPORT...
I love archery! I used to play that
a lot when I was a kid. I also did
karate, chess and I love volleyball.
I like American football as well –
once I learned the rules it wasn’t
that bad! And I love watching all
the sports in the Olympics that
I don’t get to watch often.
SPORTS STAR...
That’s a tough one. I liked to watch
Ronaldinho when I was younger.
Of course, I enjoyed watching
Messi and Ronaldo, but I feel that’s
a bit of a basic answer!
CURRENT TEAMMATE...
That’s another tough one! I’d say
the goalkeepers because we spend
a lot more time together.
GROUND YOU’VE PLAYED AT...
I played at Lyon’s ground last
season, and it was huge! It was
such a cool experience.
MEAL...
I’d have to say pizza.
KARAOKE SONG...
It depends on who’s there
and who’s going to help me!
I have done it before, but I can’t
remember what I was singing. It
wouldn’t be Evanescence, that
would be too sad!

SISTER CLUB SPOTLIGHT
Perry Street FC
PERRY STREET FC was founded in 1987 when a local
scout group decided to create a football team. Nearly
40 years later, they continue to be an all-accepting club
at the heart of the community, providing a safe and fun
environment for children of any ability to enjoy playing
football.
For boys starting their journey, the club has the
K50 Academy, and for girls, there is the Wildcats
programme, which feeds into the club’s early years
teams, who can continue right through to U18s sides.
The club are very proud to have some of their own
players currently playing within the West Ham United
women’s team academy system at various age groups
and levels, and hope they will someday see one of their
own in the famous Claret and Blue.
From all at Perry Street FC, Come On You Irons!
