A MESSAGE
FROM
SCAF’S FOUNDER
To honour the wishes of two of my
dearest friends is one of the greatest
joys of my life.
Dr Sue Armstrong
Artistic Director & Trustee
Sharing part of the creative journeys
of our growing emerging artist family,
working with interns and volunteers,
and seeing the works of Michael and

Meeting
Michael & Eileen
If we are lucky in life, we come across exceptional
people who change our lives forever. Michael and Eileen
Scott were two such individuals.
They introduced themselves to me during a coffee
break at a meeting where I was delivering a presentation,
and invited me to tea the following Sunday afternoon
to discuss my material further. The rest as they say,
is history.
SCAF’s progress
& partnerships
Many years followed of wonderful deep and gritty
discussions, group work, poetry readings, sumptuous
gatherings, art exhibitions and most of all friendship
and love. Since we began in 2016, the Foundation has
gone from strength to strength and we are forging ever
stronger links with artists, regional businesses and our
local community.
We have had some knocks along the way, not least was
having our plans for our purpose built sustainable gallery
and community art hub turned down by local planners.
Setbacks bring other opportunities however; it has led
to the formation of our Living Landscape Community
Project focusing on the land, growing food, health and
wellbeing and it has encouraged us to reach out into the
far corners of Yorkshire to find community spaces for
our exhibitions, spreading the word about SCAF and our
family of emerging artists to a far wider audience. This is
where you come in as we are looking for partners.
Ways to
get involved
It might be that you have a premises, a skill set, or
are wanting to invest in an established Yorkshire based
charity. Please reach out and join us on our journey.

Partnerships
We are looking for individuals and
businesses who would love to come on
board and collaborate with us in our work
supporting the arts and artists in Yorkshire,
and to fulfill our ultimate goal which is to
build a purpose built gallery and workshop
facility for artists at our Headquarters in
Thirsk.
Becoming a partner is not only about
giving money, it could be that you have
a particular skill set or a product or byproduct
that might help us or you might be
willing to give us some of your time to help
during exhibitions for example.
Funding
We are seeking match funding for our
projects going forward and can tailor
a partnership package to meet your
corporate social responsibility needs and
aspirations. We are currently seeking
partners for:
• SCAF Emerging Artist Award
• Living Landscape Community Project
• Workshops and Regional Exhibitions
• The SCAF Gallery Project
Each of our projects is backed by broad
social media coverage and marketing that
will ensure that your brand is promoted
widely.
Each project will also give an opportunity
for your staff and corporate clients to
engage with the charity with events
associated with the project.
How to get involved
If you would like to help us at any level
from sitting on the door to becoming
a major corporate partner please

THE SCOTT
COLLECTION
SCAF is the home of Michael and Eileen Scott’s
permanent collection that includes over 1000
artworks, books, poems and memorabilia from
two extraordinary people.
And another final thing, within my
wrinkled skin there is an ambivalent
child, holy and profane, who thinks
he sees upon wonders, flowers
in rocks, birds made of air, fire
dancing, and the eternal icons
of his tribe.
MICHAEL SCOTT EXCERPT FROM
MICHAEL’S PREFACE TO INWARD EYE
Michael and Eileen Scott were both botanists and for the
main part of their careers worked together in agricultural
research and business, culminating in Michael becoming
CEO of a large agricultural company in Yorkshire.
On retiring from the rigors of business they devoted their
lives to creativity and the exploration of consciousness
and meaning in life. Between them they produced
hundreds of paintings, authored many books, wrote
poetry; fully immersing themselves in art. literature,
music and human development. In everything they did,
their connection to and understanding of the natural
world came through.
During their lifetimes their artworks were hung in private
and public collections. They were supportive of young
and emerging talent throughout Yorkshire and provided
an annual prize to students at Langwith College in
York, which to this day holds a collection of their
artwork. Their work could be found in private and public
collections far and wide.
Towards the end of Michael’s life, Eileen having passed
away on Christmas Day 2015, I was blessed with many
opportunities to discuss first hand how he wanted their
legacy to be used. The final details were completed over
a pot of tea at The Corner Cafe in Birdforth, just down
the A19 from where our headquarters are now based.

EILEEN SCOTT
POPPY FIELD BY
MICHAEL SCOTT
The three main core objectives for SCAF, that we agreed
upon together are:
• To preserve and display for the public the Collection
of original paintings and creative works of Eileen and
Michael Scott
• To provide access, understanding and enjoyment of the
Collection to the public through exhibitions, publications
and education
• To promote, support and encourage high standards
of creative arts principally amongst young and
emerging artists
It has been our greatest honour to fulfill those wishes
and more.

Michael
Scott
Artist, writer,
poet & philosopher
1931–2016
Michael Scott’s early years in rural Gloucestershire
laid the foundation for his lifelong interest in landscape
and wildlife.
Although he qualified as a biologist and acquired a PhD
at university, his feeling for the beauties and tragedies of
nature was diverted for years by his agricultural research
and, eventually, senior management posts. He became
a part-time field botanist and ornithologist, and developed
his skills as a landscape painter, which activities
counterpoised the commercial environment.
Early retirement made it possible to spread and intensify
the activities which nourished his soul. In the last twentyfive
years, Michael worked in the personal development
field and became a poet and novelist alongside his
passion for painting.
12
Eileen
Scott
Artist, writer,
poet & philosopher
1929–2015
Eileen Scott had an amazing career. In the male
dominated world of business of the 1960’s she
fought her way up through the ranks of senior
executives at ICI, then the largest chemical
company on earth
Like her husband Michael, Eileen had overlapping
careers in biology, business strategy, and the arts.
Among her prolific creative output Eileen
has authored several books and she was an
artist having produced hundreds of paintings.
Eileen’s work will long be a reminder to us all
of her deep wisdom, wide-ranging intellect,
prolific creativity and amazing beauty.
She is greatly missed by all who knew her, but her
paintings and books will long live on to remind us
of a true woman of substance.

EMERGING
ARTISTS
The SCAF Emerging Artist Awards are
a little more challenging than some
awards as we ask the artists to submit
a proposal based upon a theme.
Ten artists are then selected to create
their original artwork.
We also ask that they produce a short accompanying video of the
process of creating their piece which is a different skill set but has
proved to be one of the best additions we ever made to the brief.
These little videos are being used by the artists on their own media
platforms and bring in a whole new audience who may not have
previously appreciated the skills and thought involved in the creative
process. We don’t then drop the artists at the exhibition door.
SCAF remains a hub for them going forward. They might branch out
and offer workshops or hold meetings at our headquarters, or work
with our archive.
We want to keep in touch and follow their careers. Supporting emerging
artists is more than handing out a prize.
Having a theme provides a
depth and richness to the final
exhibition.
Visitors are treated to 10 unique
interpretations of a subject that
can both challenge and delight.

SCAF IN THE
COMMUNITY
The Scott’s loaned and donated artworks to Yorkshire
based hospitals during their lifetimes and SCAF has
continued that tradition.
It is a perfect way to utilise the large collection of works
that we hold at SCAF and helps us reach an audience
who may have little formal interest in art, but who at their
most stressful times in life, the colour, form, texture and
imagery on the walls of a hospital corridor or waiting
area, might just gain some small benefit.

Working with the Arts Teams from some of our leading

COMBINING ART & NATURE
FOR THE HEALTH & WELLBEING
OF EVERYONE
SOPHIE SIMPSON: FEELING GLACIAL,
WINNER SCAF EAA 2021
Our health and wellbeing, both physical and mental, are
intimately connected to our ability to constantly adapt to
change in our environment and circumstances.
Connecting with nature, finding a sense of belonging with
the nature that surrounds us and finding creative outlets
for our thoughts and emotions are vital ways to support
each and every one of us through the good and the
difficult times in our lives.
At SCAF a deep connection with nature is central to all
that we do just as it was for our benefactors.

ROS WALKER: RADIANCE, FINALIST SCAF EAA 2023
Art and nature feed the very soul
of mankind
• From the natural pigments to its shapes and rhythms,
nature is to be found everywhere in art
• Connecting with nature is not simply about striving
to recreate it in imagery or form, it is the springboard
for our imaginations
• Nature inspires creativity
• Nature is beyond naive beauty, there is cruelty,
struggle, conflict, decay woven within its story
• Our relationship with nature and the environment
is a complex tapestry of changing perceptions.
Art is a language of exploration

TO EXPLORE THE
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS
AND CREATIVITY
Consciousness is a baffling phenomenon,
impossible to study without using
consciousness, but seeing must be a major
component of mind itself.
I wonder if lack of all the five senses means
there’s no mind at all, as how would we
acquire data without the senses and how
would we process data if we had none?
Michael Scott

• Art is almost exclusively
the reserve of humans
• The inner nature of the
artist is reflected in their art
and our response to a work
of art can teach us about
ourselves as well as about
the art itself
• Through works of art,
humans strive towards
consciousness
