Over the course of
two weeks in January,
17-year old Carson Guo
diligently tracked a Sotheby?s online
auction. The world?s largest brokers of art,
jewelry, and real estate had placed for
bidding a collectibles lot of 248 Supreme
skate decks?the only full set in the world
and incredibly desirable, and Carson wanted
it..
After being alerted to the auction by a
friend who knew the young King George
Secondary student was an
avid collector of the
uber-collaborative street
8
brand, Carson quickly registered and began
bidding. His incredible USD800K winning bid
was incredibly made during a school-day
lunch break.
In the world of collecting, Carson was a
relative newbie with only five years under
his belt, and through a mutual friend,
Manuel Bernaschek of Vancouver's
Stefano Ricci, we connected.
THE FATHER AND MENTOR
His father, on the hand, is the
world-renowned and much
respected Qingxiang Guo, art
curator for one of the world?s
largest corporations?the Dalian
Wanda Group?the chairman of
which is one of China?s richest
men, Wang Jianlin, long time
employer and close friend of the
elder Guo.
8
8
In 2013, Guo arranged the
purchase of ?Claude et Paloma,?a
1950 portrait by Pablo Picasso of
his two youngest children.
Expected to fetch between
$9M-$12M USD, Guo acquiring it
for $28.2M. In 2016, ?Claude et
Paloma?was loaned to the
Vancouver Art Gallery to be
displayed as part of a 60-piece
exhibition - Picasso: The Artist
and His Muses.

EARLY FASCINATION
As a high school student living with his family
in Coal Harbour, Carson was attracted to the
world of street art and streetwear. With
fascination and youthful exuberance, he
followed major brands such as KAWS, A
Bathing Ape, and high-profile collaborations
with luxury fashion houses. It was a set of
Supreme chopsticks, in a Gastown skate
shop, that sparked his interest in collecting.
With his wallet USD 80 lighter and the red and
white set in-hand, he returned home and
tucked them away, heeding the advice of
friends who advised him to resist the urge to
use them lest the value drop.
10
10
Small accessories like keychains followed then
larger items like a Supreme canoe. The passion
for Supreme is strong, not only for Carson but
also for his father. When we meet, both are
decked in full Supreme looks but with
Qingxiang favouring Off- White kicks with his
street look. He proudly showed me a
photograph of himself with Virgil Abloh
laughing together on the street in New York.
12
12
Working part-time at a local streetwear shop, Carson
quickly realized the potential of buying and selling
limited edition items and highly anticipated ?drops?to
friends and online. When he began following the
auction, he had a budget of USD300K-400K, and when
it was apparent that the collection would meet and
pass that figure quickly, he arranged financing to cover
the difference.
When asked which decks are his personal favourite,
Guo replies that it is definitely the five-deck group
created in 2000 which features Leonardo da Vinci?s
The Last Supper, with an additional sixth board
depicting Jesus Christ which was released exclusively
in Japan in 2002.
The Supreme skate deck collection has only been
displayed twice in its entirety. First for two weeks
during the auction in January at Sotheby?s New York
gallery and recently in Shanghai at a class car show
hosted by a close friend of Qingxiang?s who felt the
collection would add an extra element of excitement to
her automobile event.
BIRTH OF A COLLECTION
The collection was a passion project of 13-years which
saw SoCal entrepreneur Ryan Fuller successfully
tracked down the complete Supreme archive produced
between 1998 and 2018. Collaborations with influential
artists like Jeff Koons, KAWS (aka Brian Donnelly),
George Condo, Takashi Murakami, and Damien Hirst
produced the buzziest decks.
Always planning on displaying and selling the collection,
Fuller says, ?The defining moment for me was when I
finally secured the very last deck I needed to complete
the collection, one out of the five Dan Colen decks
that had eluded me for years.? With the collection
complete, Fuller brought in his PR person Sandrine
Charles and Sotheby?s Noah Wunsch to move forward
with the sale of the collection.

THE FUTURE
When the collection arrives in
Vancouver later this month, the
crates will be placed into storage,
until Carson?s new streetwear
concept store Chaotic Goods
launches in spring 2020.
With a 3,000-square-foot retail
space secured at the end of
Broughton Street, Carson envisions
a collaborative space that showcases
art and collectibles, streetwear by
known designers (Fear of God,
Readymade, Chrome Hearts), 14 and
14
his in-development fashion line. The
Supreme deck collection will be
installed on the ceiling and is
?definitely not for sale.?
Educating and exposing young
people to art alongside fashion is
something that Carson feels strongly
about.
?It will be a space for exciting things
to happen,? he said having already
revealed that collaboration with
Hong Kong street artist Michael Lau
will be happening.
Although unsure of where he will be
in five years, Carson Guo is
preparing to attend York University
in the fall to study General Arts,
developing Chaotic Goods, and
searching out the holy grail of
collectible Supreme ? the
Aalto iconic Tank chair.

There was nothing flash about the speaker at the podium, save for a

Known internationally to timepiece aficionados, vintage collectors,
and lovers of haute horlogerie, Kikuo Ibe is the creator of the G- SHOCK
digital watch and an industry trailblazer.

Ibe was obsessed with designing a watch that would
survive a 10-metre fall onto a solid floor and would keep
working underwater. The resulting prototype was named
?G-SHOCK,?an abbreviation of ?gravitational shock.?
Marketed initially as a timepiece for those in physical
labour jobs such as construction, manufacturing, policing,
and emergency services, the G-SHOCK watch has survived
for decades and is beloved by many. Ibe fondly says that
his creation ?is accepted by fashionable people, clubbers,
and young people.?
'An Evening with G- SHOCK?tour began
the previous night in Toronto, with the
66-year old as the main draw for an
evening that included a showcase of local
DJ?s and Canadian musical talent.
Taking the stage in Vancouver, Ibe greeted
a diverse crowd at The Venue on
Granville Street, with a shy smile and a
quirky 20-minute Powerpoint presentation,
which he narrated from a series of cue
cards.
The appreciative audience laughed each
time Ibe reinforced his story with his
mantra ?never give up!? A 3-word phrase
to which he says owes his success and
happiness. Animated and entertaining, Ibe
completed his presentation with a slight
bow and a wave.
Ibe told of his life?s devotion to creating
for Japanese brand Casio. In 1983, he and
his team began to doggedly develop a
prototype of a smash-proof digital watch
because of an unfortunate accident, a year
previous, that served as impetus for the
project?a distracted Ibe crashed into
another pedestrian, which resulted in his
watch, a gift from his father, to fall to the
concrete and break.
Ibe?s presentation was followed by a fan
meet-and-greet, where he autographed a litany of
items and posed for photographs in his signature
crossed-arm stance showing off his white
G-SHOCK watch.
In line with his quirkiness, Kikuo Ibe owns only
three of the watches?white, red, and black?all
versions of the original designs. Each only worn in
its assigned season: red in the winter, black in the
spring and
18
fall, and white in the summer.

For Spring/Summer 2020, Versace men?s wear takes a sharp turn
and forsakes the trappings of masculine character and challenges the
bold amongst us to strike a new chord through tailoring, fabric, and the
exploration of print.
The brand?s maximalist style
is most recognizable in
elements reinterpreted in
glorious saturated colour.
An archive print featuring
Bacchus, the Roman god, was
hand-painted by Vancouver
expat artist Andy Dixon.
As a new friend of the
venerated House of Versace,
Dixon recently collaborated
with Versace Home and
interior designer Sasha Bikoff
to create the most talked
about installation at Salon
del Mobile.Milano 2019.
24
24
In April, the interior of
Gianni Versace?s palazzo on
Via Gesù was remade in
radioactive neon and posh
patterns created by Dixon?s
brush. His paintings translated
seamlessly into fabric for the
Versace Home collection and
into incredibly luxurious
sheet-sets.
25
?For this collection, I wanted to explore
the elements that empower a man. I t?s
definitely the confidence, the freedom,
and desire to express himself without
hesitation.?
Donatella Versace
Versace chose the opulent vases and a race car
motif from Dixon?s work to develop into seasonal
patterns and fabrications. As the models walked
the runway, it was a delightful thrill to see
Dixon?s work represented throughout on the
sleekest silk shirts, chic summer knitwear, and
light metallic separates.
Versace?s Spring/Summer 2020 Collection invites
a celebration of contemporary masculinity, and
the House codes and colourful prints are
combined with newly tailored silhouettes 26 in
signature Versace style. The catwalk told a story
of a young man?s journey, of coming of age and
finding his confidence. Very apropos.

The window display is moderate in scope,
the exterior is painted a lovely dark green, it
almost looks black, the antique door and tiny step
it rests above, do not really belie what lies within.
This is the world of Lydia Courteille.
231 Rue St. Honore, 75001 Paris. It is parallel to
Rue Faubourg, another iconic street, and only a
few paces from L?Opera, and from, if you are
fortunate enough to be staying there, the
Rosewood Hotel Le Crillon. But this address, for
collectors around the world of Haute Jouallerie, is
as important as 31 Rue Cambon is to fashionistas.
The boutique itself is tiny, but beautifully
calibrated shelves and cabinets hold treasures
almost beyond imagining, jewellery from most of
her recent collections, and while it may seem
crowded, the fact is these beautiful pieces seem to
actually expand the space. Lydia herself enters
from her studio below, cordial, a touch skeptical of
these people from Canada, soft-spoken and from
the outset clearly a formidable intellect and artist.
All her pieces are hand-fabricated. ?Most of the
time what I envision is close to the result.
Sometimes it is less, sometimes it is more. But the
quality of the workshop is very high.?
40
40
She constantly shows the yin and yang of her
approach, confidence, without ever assuming
success. And, above all, an amazing modesty,
despite the fact that one of her best clients, and
an avid early supporter, was Karl Lagerfeld.
One thing that makes Lydia unique is that she
eschews designing custom pieces.
Matter-of-factly, she says, ?I never make
something for someone I don?t know. But also, I
have over 700 pieces, from 54 collections, so why
would I want to make one more?? She smiles at
this, since there is another important point to be
made. ?The consumer almost never knows in
advance what they really want. And I do not care
if people like what I do. If you try to please
everyone, nobody will want you.?
She says, ?You cannot be doing this to please
others. You have to be doing it to please your self,
to sustain your own vision. That is what people
will respect.? She pauses, and looks at me, and
smiles, then very gently laughs, and says, ?You are
so right, my dear, and it is okay. You have to be
brave.? She looks me in the eye, and then, even
more directly, in the eyes of my companion, who is
herself a jewellery designer.
40
40
41
?It is about courage, and faith in yourself, right,? my companion
says. And Lydia replies, ?yes, always!?, her lyrical voice and gentle
laugh carrying throughout the room, itself full of sublime creations
that stand as mute witnesses.
Later, long after we had left the boutique, my companion
would say, ?She let us hold that ring from the Guatemala
collection that had 3 pig?s heads at an angle, all a little
different, with colourful stripes of precious gems running
like racing stripes. Not something I would ever think I?d
want, but damn it, I would wear that every day of the
week if it were mine.? For me, that pretty much captured
the somewhat rapturous response we had, holding some
of Lydia?s pieces, putting on a ring here, a bracelet there,
as she talked about the intricacies of each piece, how
they were conceived, and how they came to life.
We reluctantly exit the shop almost two
hours after entering it. This side of the
street, not as sun-friendly, this time of
day, nonetheless beckons us to greet the
rest of the day, regardless of knowing we
will not meet another artist of this calibre
any time soon.

Nestled in the heart of the
Coast Mountains, the town of
Whistler, is a favoured all-year-round
destination, not only for Vancouverites but for
international visitors. Over the years, this
natural beauty has become a popular location
for many of the most celebrated, including
Prince Charles, the Beckham?s, Ashton
Kutcher, Katie Holmes, and comedian
Ricky Gervais. In ski season the mountainside
affords visitors anonymity under helmets and
goggles and in the off-season chances of
running into fans on the extensive hiking trails
is low. It is a win-win for all who need a break
and an opportunity to breathe away from
day-to-day pressures.
In February, the Four Seasons Resort and
Residences Whistler took home the Five Star
Award for the fourth consecutive year at the
Forbes Travel Guide 2019 Awards. The resort
is the only one in Whistler to be given the elite
status of a Five-Star property.
Highlighted by Forbes for its one-of-a-kind
Ski Concierge service, friendly and efficient
staff with local attractions tips, heated pool and
hot tubs, the resort was also recognized for
relaxation treatments at The SPA.

ART & SCULPTURE
Hanging adjacent to the main
floor elevators is the
3-dimensional ?Couples in
LOVE?painting by Jane
Waterous. It caught our eye
with its colour and humour,
and soon we found ourselves
seeking out additional artwork
in corridors. We encountered
many incredible pieces in
common areas with others
tucked creatively throughout
each level.
Three newly introduced treatments
that are already popular are the
Cooling Aloe Body Wrap with
house-grown lavender and cucumber;
Orange Blossom and Mint Body
Scrub with oils of orange blossoms,
peppermint, and bergamot with Dead
Sea salt; and a refreshing Water Lily
Facial with a skin analysis and
brightening booster spray.
The artwork is provided by
The Whistler Contemporary
Gallery, which is on-site
across from check-in and
promotes distinctive Canadian
and International
contemporary art. Curators
source work from top art fairs
such as the Art Expo New
York, Toronto International
Art Fair, and Art- Miami. The
gallery has a solid
representation of figurative,
abstract, and landscape
paintings, as well as
multi-media work, glass, and
sculpture.

There is a new restaurant in Vancouver that
opened its doors so quietly last month, but loud
word-of-mouth is making it one of the hottest spots to
experience amazing flavourful plantbased meals.
The Do Chay Saigon Vegetarian at 1392 Kingsway, is a
32-seat, plant-based restaurant that is creating popular
street food dishes in a sit-down setting. Opened by
Patrick Do and Amanda Clark, the menu is almost all
plant-based with many gluten-free offerings.
The spacious restaurant was designed by Tom Do and is
modeled after the former tenant?a Chinese herbal medicine
shop?which used to occupy the space. New is water wall
treatment, large glass containers displaying unique
ingredients, and a large welcoming wooden door.
?Do Chay has been two-plus years in the making,? says
co-owner Patrick Do. ?The building burnt down, and it was
an uphill battle to get to where we are today, but everything
has been worth it so far. The positive reception we?ve
received has been humbling.?

Popular dishes are the fluffy Coconut Rice Cakes,
finger-licking XO Potstickers, crunchy Seitan Calamari Lotus
Salad, and delightfully light Vegan Pho with avocado.
Vancouverites are curious and hungry for this modern take on
Vietnamese and Do says ?Our name means vegetarian stuff.
Plant-based is not only delicious, but it can be interesting. It
has been incredibly fun and fulfilling to experiment with all the
vegan flavours and to see our guests embrace and enjoy our
dishes thus far. I?ve always wanted to open a Vietnamese
restaurant that was both approachable and yet still stays close
to my family?s roots.? 70
70
71
The Do Chay menu is broken down into three categories: street
noodle bowls, and rice bowls, with new items already lined up
release over the course of the summer.
The hot spot is licensed with a full beverage menu, open every
from 11:30 am until late. Reservations available at the large ro

W
histler in the off-season is a haven for those looking
reprieve from their day-to-day schedules. A short drive or
shuttle from downtown Vancouver, lands you in nature's playground.
Waking up with the sun and joining an early morning photo safari will
take you deep into the mountains where you can experience the west
coast rainforest, lush vegetation, expansive glaciers, and observe
wildlife in their true home.
78
78
Our Four Seasons concierge recommended an early morning start, with
Whistler Photo Safari, so the following morning we were in the lobby at
6 am sharp enjoying a fresh brewed coffee, ready to explore.
We met Nick Aubertin, an avid wildlife photographer and guide for
Whistler Photo Safari, who instructed us on the etiquette of wildlife
watching before leading us to a new Jeep Wrangler JK. Strapped in and
comfortable, we pulled out of the Four Seasons on a mountain mission to
locate and photograph the 78 elusive bears.
78
79
80
The Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains are home to
many animal populations, but it is the powerful and
impressive bears that people, from around the world, come
to see. Recent estimates have the bear population around
60 and best months for viewing are May and June.
80
Along the highway and throughout our advent
Aubertin was quick to spot movement and iden
sounds coming from the thick forest. Driving u
extremely rocky and winding trails, he also too
to an incredible vantage point to experience th
power of the breath-taking Alexander Falls, a
after prompting, shared his story of traveling to
Canada from the UK and his decision to make
Whistler home.
Although known for its snowy peaks and its
thriving community of winter sports enthusiasts,
Whistler is also a fantastic destination in the
spring and summer time for those who cherish the
opportunity to connect with nature?albeit at a
much slower pace.
Our guided mountain experience was amazing and
by 9 am, we were back at the Four Seasons,
energized, enjoying a hearty buffet, a strong cup
of coffee, and mapping out the rest of the day.

of Whistler, BC. Conveniently located across
from the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and the
Four Seasons Whistler visitors to this gem of a
mountain get-away will enjoy visiting this exciting
destination and take a breather from the hustle
of the Village.

The Centre showcases the history, art, and
heritage of the Squamish and Lil'wat First
Nations through incredible drumming
performances, guided tours of the museum,
interactive, contemporary and outdoor exhibits,
and craft workshops such as cedar grass bracelet
making.
The main feature, The Great Hall, captures the
spectacular mountain and forest views through
curved glass plank walls. Showcasing
hand-carved cedar welcome figures,
pictograph-embossed boulders, massive spindle
whorls, and a series of cedar canoes, some which
are suspended from the hall's soaring ceilings.
Unique to Whistler, the Ístken Hall is a stunning
circular glass room with a natural cedar wood
interior that makes it a breath-taking location for
events, especially for those seeking a unique
wedding venue.
The three-storey facility also features specialized
meeting spaces, a museum, multi-media theatre,
an expansive patio overlooking Blackcomb
Mountain, gift shop with authentic Squamish and
Lil'wat art, and a cafe.
Before the opening of the SLCC, Squami

invisible in Whistler, even though artifact
dating from 25,000 years ago have been
discovered and dated.

In Vancouver, there are
two words that when
uttered together, create a
reaction that spurs even the most
complacent into action. These
two magical words are ?golf?and
?whisky.?
Created by Kevin Shaw and

not-for-profit organization
Whisky Wisemen was founded on

the belief that ?the glass is always
half full?and an even stronger
belief that enjoying a dram of
whisky is glorious but it is an
experience meant to be shared.
With chapters around the world
(Canada, USA, Cayman Islands),
Whisky Wisemen have partnered
up with local establishments to
have an agreed kick-back of 10%
of the groups entire spend for the
evening, donated to the Whisky
Wisemen Society, where they, in
turn, donate 98the money to
charity.
On July 5th, the Westwood
Plateau Country Golf Club
welcomed Whisky Wisemen CEO
Lesley Anne Brown and a full
cadre of foursomes for the 3rd
Annual Charity Golf
Tournament.
Golfers and non-golfers had signed on not only for their love
of whisky and the enjoyment of the sport, but to support the
day's official charity - KidzFirst Canada.
This after-school program enables youth to overcome barriers
in their lives and to empower their future by providing them
with the tools for social awareness, inclusion, and expression.
KidzFirst Canada creates positive change through the arts,
healthy living activities, and community enrichment projects.
Players were of all ages and backgrounds, suited up in their
course finery and rolled out for 18-holes. Organizers had done
a fantastic job of ensuring a mix of fun and games at each
hole including the Hole in One Challenge on 3 with MINI
Canada, golf ball cannon on 7, and on 15 the Whitecaps FC
tested tee shot skills with a grid challenge.
