Big FAT American Tour

Inform Contract

365 Railway Street

February 20, 2019

Classic Gibson.

Portland purchase.

British designer Tom Dixon?s FAT American Tour

rolled into Vancouver, ahead of its performance,

with a potential full house. 700 confirmed.

Fashioned after a rock ?n?roll tour motoring from

coast-to-coast, FAT is unveiling key pieces from

Dixon?s 2019 collection in a prequel to the official

launch at Salone del Mobile Milano in April.

Supporting act, Swedish company Teenage

Engineering is renowned for its high-end

pocket-sized synthesizers and its collaborations on

products with clothing company Cheap Monday

and blue-bagger IKEA.

As the sun sets over the new INFORM Contract in

Railtown, the crowd has swelled and is chatting

elbow-to-elbow. Dixon is entertaining the media

before taking the stage, and when I ask about the

?why?of a touring production for furniture, Dixon

takes it across the ocean and the perception of his

industry.

He leans back in the black FAT lounge chair and

says ?I was thinking particularly for our shop in

London, to try to get away from being a dusty old

furniture showroom? the way you buy furniture is

so slow; there isn?t a lot of life in a furniture shop,

so I have invited a bunch of friends in and it was

nice to have people create a party with four

6

pocket-sized synthesizers."

6

"I wanted to bring a taste of what we do at our shop

rather than having people coming into a dull lecture on

my own talking about a chair.?

In the centre of the multi-level space, the members of

Teenage Engineering crowd around soundboards in

headphones and waist-cinched white painter?s overalls

(looking very Breaking Bad), creating a continuous

ambient discord which is bouncing off the concrete walls. 8

Each stop on the FAT American Tour will showcase the

never-before-seen FAT furniture and OPAL lighting to

professionals in architecture and interior design. Included

in the mix are design fans and local friends for an

experience that embodies everything Tom Dixon is known

for ? bringing extraordinary objects and ideas into both

the creative arena and home.

The new upholstery range FAT is designed to hug the body and allows for

multiple sitting positions. Available as a dining chair, barstool and lounge chair, the

extreme simplicity of the components is a testament to reductionism, while

maintaining an instantly recognizable and faintly humorous silhouette. Quite a

balancing act? FAT is made from molded foam with metal legs, launching in high

gloss black lacquer and made to order upholstery.

OPAL is a family of translucent globes using our own custom recipe of tinted white

Opalescent polycarbonate. Semi-translucent, they maintain an ethereal ghostliness in the

daylight and at night, form a perfectly illuminated sphere. Coupled with our new dimmable

Tom Dixon LED, the OPAL range emits a soft, diffused and flattering light

"I always liked the kind of science fiction interiors, like in Space Odyssey with all of its

furniture from Olivier Mourgue, the French designer. I think there is a lack of optimism

in the furnishings, a belief in the future, which was so evident in the 1960s."

1st Year Anniversary Party

Leisure Center

Retail fashion concept store Leisure Center celebrated its

first anniversary with an exclusive party with

singer-songwriter Baby Yors, who swooped in to perform

his Canadian debut. PAPER Magazine calls Baby Yors ?the

rising queer Latin pop star, studied in the Bible of Queen?

and the description was apt.

The Argentinian-born rock/pop/soul singer has three

singles to his credit and has already graced the pages of

Billboard, OUT, Forbes, Blow Out, Pansy, and PRIDE. The

androgynous performer left his home in July and relocated

to New York City to pursue a career in ballet but soon

turned his attention to acting, which progressed to his

current passion, creating music.

Styled by Leisure Center in Vetements, Yang Li, and the

Lurr siblings?Namacheko, Baby Yors rolled his voice up the

musical ladder while crouching lower and lower. It was

especially thrilling to hear ?Bad Influence?live for the first

time.

Like the Bad Influence video, Baby Yors performance was

dramatic and intense. Which is exactly what we have come

to expect from Mason Wu and MuYun Li, creators and

co-founders of Leisure Center. They do not merely throw

?events,?they craft emotional experiences for their invited

guests that involve underground and obscure performers,

local and international artists, stimulating installations, and

attention-grabbing models.

Following his two days in Vancouver, Baby Yors was

heading to Los Angeles to continue working on new music

and videos. While his physical home is in Brooklyn, New

York, he divides his time between both cities.

?In New York, you can do a million things in one day.

Everything is so close and easy to get to. I have been living

there for eight years and I know my way around very well. I

love that there is not a lot of sun as I love gloomy

weather.? "In Los Angeles, I like that people are very relaxed

and health conscious. In New York, I am drawn toward a

more rock star lifestyle of drinking and smoking cigarettes.

Not very healthy! But when I am in LA, I am juicing and

doing yoga!?

While it seemed to Vancouver shoppers that

the brand was permanently closed for business,

JAC by JC had not shuttered, and the reality

was far from it.

Seemingly under cover of night, Cuevas had

successfully launched 100 JAC by JC retail

stores in China. The development of a joint

venture partnership with investor Bruce Li,

whom she had met in Vancouver, had proved

to be very fruitful.

16

16

?The Oakridge JAC store was difficult to close

as it was performing very well and had

attracted many loyal customers who were very

sad to hear about the closure. The JAC brand

was stronger than it had ever been,? says

Cuevas from her office in E- Fashion Town,

Hangzhou, China.

While many local fashion brands found

themselves struggling in the narrow gap

between fast fashion and the luxury market,

Cuevas had found an appreciative market

across the ocean. In Canada, her strong

designs helped facilitate a shift in women?s

business attire in the late 1980s and

throughout the 1990s. Today, in China, women

have emerged as a driving force in business

who also need attire that reflects who they are,

their drive, and ambition accurately.

By moving to China, the JAC by JC message

has not changed, just who is listening to it.

The company's new and stylish headquarters

is two floors and 20,000-square-feet. Cuevas?

office is on the main floor and from her

position, she can oversee the design and

pattern-making division, access the outlet, and

hold meetings. The second floor houses sales,

customer service, marketing department, 18 online

e-commerce platform, and the sample

production room.

With the expansion of the product line to 150

pieces released four times a year, the company

added a four- storey production facility in

2017, followed by a residence for workers

with modern comforts and living standards that

Christine Hutter, Founder & CEO

Fairmont Waterfront Hotel

900 Canada Place Way

February 13, 2019

It was in 1986, just after having earned a Bachelor?s degree, when

Christine Hutter first discovered the beauty of mechanical

timekeeping instruments. As she started her apprenticeship with

master watchmaker Wilhelm Glöggler in Munich, he showed her

old pendulum clocks, pocket watches, and chronographs with

fantastic movements that had ranked among the best and finest

calibres in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1989, the Eichstätt-born watchmaker completed her

apprenticeship, as best in class amongst her peers in Bavaria.

She was then recruited by Wempe, Germany?s largest luxury

watch retailer, then moved to Maurice Lacroix and, in 1996, to

to the Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb, and finally A. Lange & Söhne.

Over time, she began to nurture a growing desire to establish her

own watch manufacture and acquired the ?Moritz Grossmann?

brand marque with the help of her family. Her aim was to

resurrect the brand heritage that had been dormant for 120

years, and in November 2008, she founded Grossmann Uhren

GmbH in Glashütte.

In February 2019, Hutter visited Vancouver to attend meetings

with vendors interested in becoming Canada's first distributor of

Moritz Grossman timepieces, and to present the brand at an

exclusive dinner with members of RedBar Vancouver.

"Our watches may seem very simple

on the outside, but on the inside,

we are making mechanical perfection."

The interiors of the new showroom were

designed by the Giorgio Armani Interior

Design Studio based in Milan, Italy, and are

reflective of the aesthetic that Armani/Casa

represents internationally with its muted but

sophisticated use of wood, metallic and

ceramic marble effects. In addition to tableau's

can purchase comfortable bathrobes,

28

Several collections will be represented at

Armani/Casa on an on-going basis. One

material making a welcome return is Murano

glass as part of the Armani/ Casa Exclusive

Textiles by Rubelli collection. During the

Salon de Mobile in Milano, in April 2019, new

furnishings and accessories will be announced.

Available is a single limited edition Logo lamp.

Originally conceived and created in Armani?s

studio in 1982, the pyramid-shaded lamp is an

integral part of the home collection, and was

recently released in an edition of 200.

Armani/Casa in Vancouver has # 0099, and it

comes with a hard-bound booklet of

authentication.

30

30

For decades the Armani name has been

synonymous with exquisite taste and Italian style.

Launched in 2000 in New York, the Armani/Casa

brand embodies simple, but elegant style. Giorgio

Armani loves linear design, minimalism interlinked

with cultural connotations, and art deco style of

the 1930s.

Armani/Casa was born in 2000 when Giorgio

Amani opened his flagship at Via Manzoni 31,

Milan. A year later the brand expanded to Paris,

New York, and Los Angeles. 2004 saw the

launch of the Interior Design Studio by

Armani/ Casa, due in no small part to the

increasing demand by private clients to create

made-to-measure design projects.

Today the company has a sales network operating

worldwide, with stores located in the world?s major

cities including recent additions Tokyo, Shanghai,

and Beijing.

Vancouver?s Armani/ Casa boutique showroom is

open five days a week from 10 am to 6 pm,

overseen by managers Nora Szeleczky and

Tünde Sz?ke and employs professional people

such as one interior designer and two

salespersons. All Armani/Casa furniture,

accessories, and decors are available for order.

Services available include interior design, home

styling, deliveries, and installation.

Armani/ Casa soft- launched in late January

and is planning a hard- launch in early June.

Authentic Luxury Resellers

943 Seymour Street

February 26, 2019

odaselleAlex Jane.

In 2015, Vancouver-based online luxury

handbag and accessory re-seller

Modaselle opened a brick-and-mortar

retail location on Seymour Street. This

was only two years after the launching

of an e-commerce business, which was

looking to tap into the burgeoning billion

dollar online luxury resale market. It was

a new venture for owner and founder

32

32

From all appearances, the e-commerce website was a

cookie-cutter sales platform for pre-owned handbags and

accessories by many of the internationally recognized names

in luxury with Gucci, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel,

comprising the bulk of the offerings.

What visitors and competitors did not realize is that the

Modaselle business concept did not rely on a strategy of

drop-selling other brands?products or the traditional

consignment/commission model.

Jane opted instead to ?buy outright?Modaselle?s entire

inventory from trusted sources and individuals. Jane explains,

?This style gave us more control over

quality, provided the fastest payout o

sellers, and most importantly, made M

34

accountable for authenticity as we ow

By focusing on the Canadian market M

transactions.

The impetus for launching a brick and

mortar presence ?was to combine all

store operations into one location and to

give local shoppers a chance to come

and actually see the inventory that was

available online,? says Vancouver store

manager Jon Heil.

The expansion placed Modaselle at

street-level between the Downtown and

Yaletown shopping districts. With metered

parking, modest foot traffic and within

walking distance to the Granville Street

transit corridor, the location is highly

visible, and is open Monday to Saturday.

The location is spacious and laid-out with

consideration to movement and product

display. Previous tenant, Xixo Leather

Artistry, relocated adjacent to Robson

Street soon after having fully renovated

the 1,000-square-foot location to

accommodate their tourist-friendly

high-priced leather footwear including

cowboy and fashion boots, and

outerwear. The resulting shelving and

displays were ideal and easily

accommodated Modaselle product and

the move-in was relatively seamless.

For sellers there are no day or hour

restrictions on accessing buying

services and payouts are immediate via

cheque. The in-house buyer will also

manually provide an opinion or a

certificate of authentication for

buyers/seller if requested.

For situations where doubt may linger

as to authenticity, Modaselle is one of a

handful of businesses in the city using

the Entrupy system for authentication.

By photographing and uploading specific

areas of a leather-based product, the

Entrupy algorithm compares these

against its database of authentic images

and returns a determination of authentic

or counterfeit within minutes.

At Modaselle shoppers have in-person

access to 800+ items that are also

available online with the exception of

very high-end pieces, which are housed

off-site for security reasons, but

available upon request.

Originally the company had an even split

of sales between handbags and fine

jewelry with classic brands like Cartier

and Tiffany doing well.

?We love that our location offers our

Vancouver-based clients the opportunity to

browse online and then stop by at their

convenience to physically interact with the

product, especially with the highly sought

after luxury brands like Chanel and

Louis Vuitton,? says Jane when asked

about the importance of maintaining a strong

connective relationship between Modaselle?s

retail store and e-commerce site.

Unlike retailers in the infamous Alberni

Street Luxury Zone, Modaselle does not

offer AliPay, WeChat Pay, or any other

mobile payment services. Jane explains ?it

isn?t that we don?t want to implement these

payment methods, but as of now we haven?t

seen a large demand. Our retail shoppers are

local-based, of all ages and split evenly

between women and men. They are

interested in high quality, well-priced luxury

products.? He continued, ?They are savvy

shoppers looking to save on designer items,

collectors looking for discontinued pieces,

watch enthusiasts seeking a new piece for

their collections, and sometimes men

shopping for jewelry for their partners.

The recently published ThredUp 2018

Resale Report reveals that the resale

market will reach $41B by 2022 with apparel

and accessories comprising 49% of the pie,

and with growth 24x faster than retail. By

offering a variety of high-end inventory,

authenticity and product guarantee, top level

customer service, and fast free duty-free

shipping, it could be said that Modaselle is

thriving by delivering to their clients exactly

what they want - the best in preloved luxury

accessories without all the bells and whistles.

With seven dining options available at the Four Seasons

Resort Punta Mita, we found ourselves gravitating daily

towards Aramara Restaurant. The ocean views were so

inviting and the menu so easily veganized.

Meaning 'sacred place by the ocean' in native Huichol,

Aramara combines contemporary Asian cooking

techniques with the freshest ingredients from the

fragrant earth surrounding Punta Mita

and the neighbouring lands.

Born in Guadalajara, Chef Esther Sanchez studied

at the Culinary and Gastronomy Institute of Mexico

and spent time working in top restaurants

in Spain before joining the Four Seasons team, first in

Houston, Texas, and by 2008, back in Mexico at

Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita.

Sitting at our departure gate, the temptation was strong

of celebrities, including superstars Madonna,

James Brown, Diana Ross, David Bowie,

Lady Gaga, and Céline Dion. Moreover, over

the course of his career, Mugler has

collaborated prolifically with renowned

filmmakers, architects, artists, and photographers

like Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, and

David LaChapelle.

?Thierry Mugler not only left his mark on his era,

he revolutionized fashion with his creations 52 in

sculptural forms that are both futuristic and

elegant. He staged the most spectacular fashion

shows and breathed new life into haute couture,

notably through the use of new materials such as

metal, latex, and faux fur.

His distinctive style transcended trends, and

continues to influence a new generation of

couturiers,? notes exhibition curator

Thierry- Maxime Loriot.

Thierry Mugler: Couturissime

Six Acts of Incredible Vision

Act I: Macbeth & The Scottish Lady, 1985

Given the biggest budget in the history of the

Comédie- Française, since it was founded in 1680,

Mugler designed over seventy costumes and accessories

for the play. Made in the Paris institution?s workshops,

this exhibition offers an extraordinary opportunity to see

them.

Act II: Stars & Sparkles, Staging Fashion

In 1984, importing a concept introduced by the Japanese

couturier Issey Miyake in 1973; Mugler became the first

designer to present a fashion spectacular to the public in

the West. Over 6,000 people?4,000 of whom paid 175

francs?attended an unforgettable fashion opera in the

hall of the Zénith arena in Paris that required 800

projectors and brought together 60 models wearing 350

designs, 18 sound technicians, 20 hairdressers, and as

many makeup artists, most from Japan.

Act III: Belle de Jour & Belle de Nuit

In the 1970s amidst of the hippie movement with its

flower power and ethnic looks, Mugler defied trends by

inventing his ?glamazon,? a modern, stylish, urban,

unconventional woman. Body-conscious cuts,

architectural silhouettes, innovative materials. The Mugler

woman made her mark with her oversized hats,

extra-broad shoulders and form-fitting gowns, her

cleavage and wasp waist, her gleaming corsets,

skyscraper boots, dagger stilettos, and her ?derrière

décolletés.?

54

Act IV: The Photographer?s Eye, Helmut Newton, et al

The trigger for Mugler?s interest in photography came in

1976 when he asked Newton to do an advertising

campaign for him but his interference caused Newton

step aside. Mugler photographed Iman and Jerry Hall,

wearing his designs in faraway, unspoiled places like on

an iceberg in Greenland, amid the dunes of the Sahara,

and atop the eagles of the Chrysler Building.

Act V: Metamorphosis: Fantasy Bestiary

Mugler?s bestiary took its inspiration from

reptiles and insects, birds and butterflies. An

innovator, he used synthetic materials rather

than real fur and declined to work with luxury

exotic skins or rare feathers. Instead, he

mimicked plumage and carapaces.

La Chimère unveiled a mythical creature with

jointed armour and scales embellished with

crystals, rhinestones, feathers, and horsehair. A

masterpiece that required thousands of atelier

hours.

Act VI: Futuristic & Fembot Couture

The aerodynamic and robot-style looks

invented by Mugler are now iconic. He took his

inspiration from science fiction and comic-book

heroines, from medieval armour and uniforms,

from industrial design and futuristic vehicles.

His all-time masterpiece is the

Maschinenmensch [robot-woman] who in

1995, was presented at his fashion house?s

20th-anniversary show. A dramatic entry

culminated in the unveiling of the models

robotized body. With this creation, Mugler paid

tribute to the character of Futura from the

dystopian novel Metropolis. The incredible

outfit required six months of intensive work.

Maharajas' Expres

Indian Splendor Expedition

Delhi - Agra - Rathambore - Jaipur - Bilkaner - Jodhpur - Udaipur - Balasinor - Mumbai

Luxury train travel continues to enjoy a

resurgence in popularity with new exciting

expeditions across more countries being

announced each season. Far from intimidating,

travel by train offers the traveler a fresh angle

to view the passing world. From the air, one

experiences the topographical view of the

landscape. From the sea, one experiences only

the dramatic coastlines and but a day in port,

perhaps shopping or embarking upon a foot

tour.

The Maharajas?Express is one of the most

sought after experiences. Repeatedly cited as

the leading luxury train journey in the world,

year after year, this train rolls the rails from

October to April. The award-winning Maharajas?

Express transports 88 guests per trip in 20

Deluxe Cabins, 18 Junior Suites, 5 Suites, and a

single carriage consisting of a Presidential Suite.

60

Amenities aboard the train include climate control,

en suite modern washrooms, and all the electronic

and digital perks of a hotel suite. Each suite is

elegantly decorated with simple necessities, a

writing table, wardrobe, and wifi.

Each car comes with a personal valet who is

professionally trained and available around the

clock to ensure all questions are answered and

guests?whims fulfilled.

The finest of dining experiences are in the

bronze peacock-adorned Mayur Mahal, with its

lush emerald and gold décor, and the Rang

Mahal with its embroidered ruby brocades.

The daily menu reflect the region, and if not

satisfied, guests could request a tête-à-tête

with complaisant Chef John Stone, who

devises dishes to suit all palates. There is no

need to worry about dietary preferences. The

kitchen practices inclusionary dining, and

culinary prowess extends far beyond the

anticipated Indian cuisine.

Each day, the freshest fruits and vegetables,

fragrant spices, and requested specialty items

are gleaned from local markets and prepared in

the tiny, but extremely efficient, bustling

kitchen car. While aboard, diners enjoyed

multi-course meals with bottomless beverages.

Each day, the Indian offerings are joined by

dishes created to spotlight an international

cuisine, like Italian, Mediterranean, and

Caribbean. Sweet cravings were satisfied with

simple palate-cleansing desserts, and others

like tiramisu and hot gulab jamun.

Where vegan and vegetarian versions

of dishes were not offered, Chef

Stone creates bespoke haute cuisine

meals with gusto.

When off the train, sumptuous

buffets were prepared by catering

teams and palace kitchens, with full

bars of local wines and top-shelf

spirits to please all. Guests on the

journey arrived from all over the

world. On the run of the Maharajas?

62

Express that we traveled, the guests

included a well-heeled eclectic group

that included three Saudi princesses,

an Egyptian hotelier, an Israeli

orthopedic surgeon, a young family

from Vancouver, and the sibling of a

Lebanese fashion icon Elie Tahari.

The Maharajas?Express is a

structured adventure trip that

includes many of India?s famous

destinations, which are arranged

during non-peaks hours to provide

a kaleidoscope of stunning

archaeological, religious and

historical sites, as well as markets

dedicated to gemstone and marble.

Guided tours include an early

morning visit to the shimmering

Taj Mahal, exhaustive explorations

of Jaipur?s Amber Fort and the

Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, a

refreshingly languid boat ride on

Lake Pichola to Udaipur?s City

Palace, and a rocky excursion

through Balasinor?s Dinosaur

Fossil Park led by Indian royalty

Princess Aaliya.

62

62

63

Sprinkled throughout the journey are numerous

opportunities to venture off on a private jaunt,

accompanied by an escort in a chauffeur-driven,

air-conditioned Mercedes. If you wish to skip a

day?s architectural wonders and head off for

shopping, golf, or a luxurious spa visit, the Guest

Manager made it so.

Once-in-a-lifetime experiences abound. Putting

aside the magnificently romantic Taj Mahal, and

the Jai Mahal?s painted elephant ?meet and greet?

with sugarcane and greens, it is doubtful that

guests will never again cradle in their hands, an

extremely rare intact dinosaur egg.

On a rough early morning open-air truck safari

through Jaipur?s Ranthambore National Park,

guests encounter families of Langur monkeys with

infants, a sunbathing marsh crocodile, family packs

of wild boar, species of deer including spotted

Chital, the Nilgai antelope, the bearded Sambar,

and a gorgeously aloof Bengal tiger.

The free-roaming animals are not tagged, and

much of the adventure?s excitement is the wild

ride the conservationist guides take their guests

on, all the while communicating frenetically

through walkie-talkies. The final night onboard is

dedicated to fun and frivolity.

Upon arrival from visiting with the royal family of

Balasinor, the valets had laid-out traditional his

and her Indian outfits, for guests to wear for

dinner. Everyone enjoys a final night on the

Maharajas?Express, offered canapés, desserts,

overflowing gold-rimmed champagne flutes, all

the while learning the latest Bollywood dance

moves from members of the kitchen staff. The

journey concluded at Mumbai?s Lokmanya Tilak

Station.

Arranged luxury vehicle transportation whisked

guests away to their various destinations. We had

the pleasure of spending our last few hours in

India shopping at the ultra-luxury Stefano Ricci

boutique with Manual Bernaschek, owner of

Canada's only Stefano Ricci in Vancouver.

As one of the most luxurious trains in India, the

Maharajas?Express is designed to satisfy the

romance, curiosity, and intrigue, historically

associated with train travel.
