A family legacy built on
passion, design, and love
Text: Justine Fortuin Photograph: Chandese Photography
The House of Interiors and D’Ou Jardin Café in Bloemfontein are a family-run business
founded by Driekie Thomas-Barnard and supported by her sons, Kobus and Reynard.
What started as a small venture has grown into a successful enterprise,
combining design, creativity, and hospitality.
10 Get It Bloemfontein February 2025 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
Driekie’s story begins long before
House of Interiors was founded in
2007. Growing up in a family business
environment, she learned the
importance of collaboration and the
strength that comes from working
together as a team. Her earliest
memories are of accompanying her
mother, Alet Banard, to her curtainmaking
business, Vlaamse Linne. As
the youngest of the household, Driekie
often tagged along to client visits,
igniting her lifelong love for design.
“My love for beautiful things and the
art of arranging furniture and décor
took root when I was given the chance
to redecorate one of her clients’ living
rooms,” Driekie recalls. That spark led
to small design projects of her own,
eventually growing into a flourishing
career.
Driekie’s dedication to design deepened
over time, leading her to become an
accredited interior designer. Though
she initially worked for her mother,
Driekie aspired to expand her horizons
and create designs for larger spaces,
including hotels. The birth of House of
Interiors marked the realisation of this
dream.
Yet, as much as Driekie has built the
foundation of the business, she has
always believed in the power of family
support. The decision to bring her sons
into the fold was a natural evolution. “It’s
been a fantastic shift to finally share the
responsibilities of the business with my
sons, who previously only enjoyed its
perks,” she says.
Driekie now plays a mentoring role,
guiding Kobus and Reynard as they
take on more responsibilities within the
business.
For Kobus and Reynard, joining the
family business was not just about
continuing a legacy – it was about
adding their own skills and talents to
the mix.
Kobus, with his natural creative flair, is
poised to take over the interior design
side of the business. “My passion for
design comes from a love of beautiful
things,” Kobus explains. “I believe every
space should evoke emotion and have
a unique feel – whether it’s a home or a
restaurant.”
Meanwhile, Reynard handles the day-today
operations and finances, ensuring
everything runs smoothly. “I am the
accountant in the business, managing
the daily operations,” Reynard says,
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
emphasising that his role is crucial in
keeping the operations functioning
seamlessly behind the scenes.
Together, the brothers balance their
strengths, ensuring that every aspect
of the business is covered. The synergy
between the three of them is evident
in the way they complement one
another’s roles.
“We’ve always been involved in the
family business from a young age,
developing a shared passion for
interior design,” says Kobus. “Our love
for creating beautiful, inviting spaces
naturally extended to the café, where
we could blend our design expertise
with a love for food and hospitality.”
The thought of
one day seeing my
children take the
reins and grow the
business further fills
me with pride.
While House of Interiors specialises
in transforming spaces, from homes
to large-scale projects like hotels and
offices, the Thomas-Barnard family’s
ventures don’t stop there. They also run
D’Ou Jardin Café, a growing business
that started as a small coffee and tea
corner within the interior design studio.
Over time, the café blossomed into
a full-fledged establishment, hosting
events like weddings, brand launches,
and intimate gatherings.
Driekie’s passion for hosting and
design seamlessly blends into the café’s
operations. “I never envisioned entering
the hospitality industry, but what began
as a small corner grew into something
much more,” she says. The café, like
House of Interiors, offers a space where
creativity can thrive – whether it’s
through the décor or the events hosted
there.
Kobus adds, “We all love coming home
to a beautiful space, and we’re drawn
to restaurants that offer not just good
food but a space that makes us feel
relaxed and at ease.” This shared love for
aesthetics and hospitality naturally spills
over into their work at D’Ou Jardin Café,
creating an environment that combines
great food and beautiful design.
Running a business together can
present challenges, especially when
balancing personal relationships
with professional responsibilities. The
Thomas-Barnard family has found ways
to maintain harmony in both their work
and personal lives.
“When challenges arise – whether due
to illness or personal struggles – we step
in for one another, ensuring that no
one is left behind,” Driekie explains. This
bond of mutual support is something
that helps them navigate even the
busiest times.
For Kobus, creating a balance has
also been key to their success. “We’ve
established a rule to shut off business
talk during family time, which helps
maintain that balance. My mother is
excellent at this, and I’ve learned this
valuable skill from her over the years,”
he says.
Reynard echoes this sentiment, noting
that while family dinners often turn
into business discussions, they are
committed to drawing a line once the
day is done. “It’s still a work in progress,
but we’re committed to making it work,”
he adds.
For the Thomas-Barnard family, the
business is not just about financial
success but about leaving a lasting
legacy. Driekie speaks fondly of the day
she realised the full extent of the family’s
bond and shared passion.
“This business represents my legacy.
It’s my way of passing on everything
I’ve learned – every struggle faced and
victory achieved. The thought of one
day seeing my children take the reins
and grow the business further fills me
with pride.”
Kobus and Reynard share this vision. For
Kobus, it’s about continuing to build on
what their mother started, expanding
into new areas while staying true to
the core values that have guided the
business. “My dream is to expand both
the café and interior design company
into other areas of the country, bringing
our unique offering to metro areas,” he
says.
Reynard, too, sees the potential for
growth and innovation. “Ultimately,
we aim to provide our clients with
an unmatched experience, growing
and evolving in ways that continue to
inspire and surprise,” he concludes.

Sowing seeds of change
with love for the community
The 26-year-old Tshegofatso Choane
is also an accountant and co-founder
of the Agripreneur Farmer’s Institute
in the Free State, an AgriSETAaccredited
training provider.
Tshegofatso credits her uncle, a grain
farmer from Tiger River, for sparking
her passion for agriculture while she
was still in high school.
“When you have a passion for
something you make it work,” she
reflects. Staying true to this belief,
she later founded a non-profit
organisation during her university
years dedicated to training and
empowering youth in rural areas
through agricultural development.
She explains that by working with
the institute she has the opportunity
to live out her passion for farming
while imparting knowledge to
aspiring young farmers, especially in
rural areas, as the elders have retired
over time.
“I grew up in a village where
agriculture was the bread and basket
of the community. I have always had
a passion for teaching and training,
which is why I decided to integrate
my passion for agriculture with
education. There is no better way to
develop a community than granting
them access to knowledge,”
says Tshegofatso.
When it comes to managing her
time and resources, Tshegofatso
highlights success needs to stem
from determination despite
challenges.
“You simply have to make use of
what you have,” she advises.
She encourages young female
farmers to keep going because there
are enough opportunities
for everyone.
“We belong in this space, let us work
together to ensure we make things
easier for the next generation.
When you have
passion for
something you
make it work.
To agri aspirants, there is no
better way of knowing how to do
something other than doing it, find
mentors and go for training, we are
here for you as a new generation
of farmers.”
With hopes to develop and mentor
the next generation, Tshegofatso
says technological innovations in
the sector will improve operations
in rural areas that are already falling
behind with current trends.
“Oh, technology you beautiful thing!
Technology is there to make things
easy for us and improve production.
We need to improve tech knowledge
and machinery in rural areas – drone
use, new tractors, and planting
systems, to name a few. We need
to learn new ways of getting things
done and growing food to grow and
develop our rural economies,”
she says.
Despite this, she emphasises the
importance of evolving and learning
about the industry to succeed, be
it by finding ways to improve the
management of your enterprise,
managing your finances, or finding
ways of using technology to curb the
effects of climate change.
“We need a generation of young
farmers who will be able to
bring us investors, markets, and
innovative ideas for rural economic
development,” she says.
For her, there is no greater reward
than seeing someone succeed,
knowing well that she had a hand
in it. “The pie is big enough for us to
share and enjoy together. Let us work
together, let’s share [knowledge]
and build each other – invest in
knowledge, strive to improve things
daily. Your Tuesday cannot be the
same as your Monday, there is just
something you are doing that is
wrong. A slight change can make a
difference,” she concludes.

Text: Nicole Sherwin, founder Eco Diva Natural Superfood Skincare www.ecodiva.co.za
The beauty industry is constantly
evolving, with trends that push the
boundaries of skincare and makeup
innovation. One of the latest and
most exciting movements is the rise
of superfood makeup—a perfect
fusion of natural skincare and
cosmetics designed to nourish the
skin while enhancing beauty. But
what exactly is superfood makeup,
and why is it poised to be the next
big trend in beauty?
What is superfood makeup?
Superfood makeup is a category of
cosmetics formulated with nutrientrich
ingredients traditionally found
in the wellness world. Think of the
same superfoods you add to your
smoothies—like chia seeds, baobab,
matcha, and cacao—but now they’re
in your foundation, lip balm, and even
your mascara. These supercharged
ingredients are rich in vitamins,
minerals, antioxidants, and essential
fatty acids, offering benefits beyond
just surface-level beautification.
Superfood makeup goes beyond
typical beauty products, delivering
skincare benefits while you wear it.
Imagine makeup that not only covers
imperfections but also hydrates,
protects, and even heals the skin.
That’s the magic of this trend—beauty
and health working together for
optimal results.
The future of superfood makeup
As more consumers lean towards
clean, ethical beauty products that
offer skincare benefits, superfood
makeup is set to revolutionize the
beauty industry. The future will see
an expansion in the variety and
complexity of these formulations, with
more focus on personalised beauty
solutions, and an emphasis on allnatural,
nourishing ingredients.
BEAUTY
Superfood makeup ... the next big trend
Key Ingredients in Superfood Makeup
Many brands are now championing superfood-rich formulas, integrating
these powerful ingredients into their products. Some key superfoods you’ll
find include:
Baobab: Packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, baobab helps boost collagen
production, promoting firmness and elasticity.
Chia: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds provide deep hydration and help
balance the skin’s natural oil production.
Cacao: Known for its high antioxidant content, cacao fights free radicals and
keeps the skin youthful and radiant.
Moringa: This nutrient powerhouse contains vitamins A, C, and E, offering
protection from environmental stressors while nourishing the skin.
Spirulina: With its potent anti-inflammatory properties, spirulina helps calm
irritated skin and reduce redness.

The benefits of superfood makeup
The primary advantage of superfood makeup is its ability to double
as skincare. Unlike conventional makeup, which can sometimes
clog pores or irritate the skin, superfood-infused products provide a
holistic approach to beauty. Here are a few reasons why this trend is
gaining momentum:
Nourishes the skin: Superfood makeup is rich in vitamins, minerals, and
antioxidants, which work to nourish the skin from the outside in. With
consistent use, skin appears healthier, more hydrated, and glowing.
Protects against environmental damage: Ingredients like spirulina and
moringa create a protective barrier that shields the skin from pollutants
and UV damage, keeping skin resilient and youthful.
Hydrates and balances: Superfood ingredients such as chia seeds and
baobab have incredible moisturising properties, ensuring the skin stays
hydrated throughout the day. They also balance oil production, making
superfood makeup suitable for all skin types, including oily and acneprone
skin.
Supports skin healing: Rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
properties, superfood ingredients like cacao and spirulina can speed up
the skin’s healing process, reducing redness, irritation, and inflammation.
Eco-friendly and clean: Many superfood makeup brands emphasise
sustainability and ethical sourcing, ensuring that their products are not
only good for your skin but also for the planet. Most of these products
are free from harmful chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and toxins, aligning
with the growing demand for clean beauty.

Why superfood makeup is
the next big beauty trend
In a world increasingly driven by wellness,
consumers are becoming more conscious
of what they put on their skin. The shift
towards clean, plant-based beauty is
undeniable, and superfood makeup ticks all
the boxes for the modern, health-conscious
consumer. Here’s why it’s taking over the
beauty world:
A holistic approach to beauty: Consumers
want beauty products that provide
more than just temporary solutions.
They want makeup that enhances their
skin's health while delivering long-lasting
beauty. Superfood makeup offers that
holistic approach, blending skincare and
makeup seamlessly.
Natural glow: With superfood-infused
cosmetics, the focus is on achieving a
natural, healthy glow rather than masking
imperfections. People are shifting away
from heavy, cakey makeup toward lighter,
breathable options that let their skin shine.
Sustainability: As the beauty industry
becomes more aware of environmental
concerns, brands are responding with ecoconscious,
sustainably sourced products.

Creamy Al Paolo (serves 2)
Ingredients:
1 cup cream
½ cup chicken stock
80 g Parmesan, grated
200 g chicken breasts/sliced
200g Green Peppers, pan-fried
150g pan-fried mushrooms
250 g penne, cooked al dente
Salt and black pepper
Method:
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the cream
and chicken stock. Allow it to simmer until reduced
by half, creating a rich, creamy base. To add flavour, stir
in half of the Parmesan cheese, along with the sliced
chicken, pan-fried green peppers, and mushrooms.
Let the ingredients meld together. Lastly,
toss the mixture with the cooked
penne, ensure the pasta is
well-coated. Sprinkle the
remaining Parmesan
on top and season
to taste with salt
and pepper.

sunny rays
Spend time in your garden awakening your senses
with the sweet scent of Gardenia and peppery taste of Summer Savory
Indoor plant of the month
Did you know that sweetly scented Gardenia can be grown
indoors as well as on the patio? All it needs is to be near
a window that receives bright, indirect sunlight. Keep the
soil moist but not soggy and feed once a month with a
fertiliser or liquid feed at half strength, for acid- loving plants.
It doesn’t mind being trimmed after flowering to keep it in
shape. Cut off dead flowers to encourage new ones. If you
need to repot, do it when the weather is cooling down and
the plant is semi-dormant. Details: lvgplant.co.za
Text: ALICE COETZEE
Herb of the month
Summer Savory (Saturega
hortensis) is a hot, peppery herb,
with subtle notes of thyme, mint
and marjoram. It’s a robust herb
that stands up to long slow cooking
and adds flavour to red meat, game
and poultry dishes as well as to
vegetables. It can be mixed with other
herbs when marinating meat for the
braai. The very young leaves add zest
to salads.
This annual summer herb, which
has small, delicate light green leaves,
grows in full sun or semi shade. Sow
seed directly into the soil. It does best
in light, loamy soil that drains well and
has been enriched with compost. For
a bushy, multi-stemmed plant, pinch
off the growing tips when the plants
are about 15cm tall. Use the tips in
salad. Once established this is a heat
and drought tolerant plant.

Garden tasks for February
• Identify a place for sweet peas because next
month is the time to start preparing a bed for
them • Lightly trim lavender, pelargoniums,
and other bushy plants that need tidying up •
Agapanthus and irises that need dividing can be
thinned out now • Water camellias and azaleas
regularly as they are setting buds for spring •
Water containers daily and feed with a liquid
fertiliser at half strength every second week •
This is the last month to sow basil if you want a
harvest before Winter.
We’re planting… Celosia Sol for its foliage that becomes
a brilliant shade of burgundy or mix of burgundygreen
when planted in full sun. Although this celosia
does produce pretty flowers at the end of summer, it is
primarily a foliage plant. It’s also a low growing shrubby
plant that is ideal for beds and borders and in containers.
The burgundy Lizard Leaf and mixed colour Gekko
Green contrast well with sunny yellow marigolds, zinnia,
petunias and sun coleus. It needs at least six hours of sun
to bring out its colours and soil that drains well. Water
regularly but allow the soil to slightly dry out before
watering again. Fertilise once a month.

If you’re ready to lace up your boots
and step into the world of hiking,
you’re in for an adventure that
combines the beauty of nature with
a great way to stay active. And it isn’t
reserved for seasoned pros ... it’s an
accessible activity that allows anyone
to enjoy the outdoors at their own
pace. Besides the benefits of physical
exercise, it’s believed that spending
just 20 minutes outdoors leads to a
reduction in cortisol, the hormone
related to stress. Whether you’re
looking to unwind and relax, get a bit
of exercise, or simply enjoy the sights,
the beginner tips below will help you
feel prepared, confident, and excited
to hit the trails.
Start on shorter local trails
Before you have your sights set on
navigating multi-day expeditions
or conquering brag-worthy routes,
starting out with local hiking routes is
ideal for novices of all ages and fitness
levels. Most places have multiple
trails that are not too technically
challenging and complex to navigate.
Exploring local trails makes hiking
more accessible, saving you both time
and money by cutting out long trips.
Gear up with the essentials
Equipping yourself and your group
with the right gear ensures that you’ll
be well prepared for various scenarios
that can happen on a hike - from
weather changes to getting lost and
anything in-between.
Take a hike!
Love the outdoors. A beginner’s guide to hiking.
Water ... This hiking essential doesn’t
need much of an introduction, but
it wouldn’t be an essentials packing
list if water wasn’t on it. According
to medical experts, water is more
vital on a hike than many realise, as
it’s easy to lose more fluid through
sweat than expected. Without
regular hydration, even a
short trek can lead
to dehydration,
causing fatigue,
headaches, and
sluggishness. In more severe
cases, dehydration can lead to heat
exhaustion or even heatstroke, both
of which pose serious health risks.
Regular sips along the trail help keep
your energy steady, your focus clear,
and your body protected, allowing you
to enjoy the outdoors safely and fully.
Basic first aid kit ... A basic first
aid kit might not be the first thing
that comes to mind for a hike, but
it’s invaluable when you’re out on
the trail. Small injuries—like cuts,
scrapes, or blisters—can quickly
turn uncomfortable. Having a
well-prepared kit means you’re
equipped to handle minor mishaps
or ease discomfort. Essentials
include a roll of adhesive bandage,
plasters, antibacterial ointment, an
antihistamine, gauze pads, pain relief
medication, safety pins, tweezers, oral
rehydration salts, and an EpiPen if
anyone has serious allergies.
Sun protection ... It goes
without saying that protecting
your skin from the sun is incredibly
important. So apply a good sunscreen
with SPF50+ before you go, and
reapply regularly throughout the day.
You should also wear a hat or cap -
like this Hi-Tech unisex cap.
Safety first With any active activity
safety is of the utmost importance,
and hikers need to take safety
precautions seriously. Hiking in
numbers is one of the best ways to
ensure safety on the trails. Not only
can a group help navigate tricky
terrain, but they can also assist in the
event of an unexpected injury or
emergency. Before setting off, it’s wise
to inform someone you trust about
your planned route and estimated
return time. This way, if you run
into any issues and can’t reach out,
someone will know where to look for
you and your group.
Hiking appropriate footwear ... Trust us. A sturdy pair of hiking shoes is one of the
few true essentials for any hike. Whether you’re venturing onto your designated
trail for a quick walk or heading out for a full-day trek, quality walking boots or trail
shoes are key to staying comfortable and safe. A pair of shoes that ensures longlasting
cushioning and a unfailing comfortable fit is ideal For women, Hi-Tec’s
Glacier Mid women’s shoe features soft mesh for breathability, a padded
collar and tongue to support your ankles and it’s mid-cut style to keep you
safeguarded on rugged terrains. Hi-Tec’s men’s hiking footwear range
features the Ravus Vent Lite Low, designed for versatility across
varied terrains. This hiking shoe features a rugged outsole that
grips with unrivalled ease. The breathable membrane keeps
your feet comfortably dry, while the ghillie lacing system and
rustproof hardware secures a lasting fit. Visit hi-tec.co.za

Roof tops road tripping
From bikes to boards ... the road trip essentials guide to roof racks
There’s nothing that we South Africans
love more than a road trip. And this
year, we plan on getting out there ...
we’re gearing up for scenic coastal
drives, rugged camping adventures,
cross-country journeys. Having the
right gear can make all the difference
when it comes to comfort and
convenience on the road.
“Whether you’re transporting bikes,
kayaks, SUPs, a rooftop tent, or a roof
box, it all starts with a roof rack,” says
Jamie Owen, marketing manager
for Thule SA. Roof racks serve as the
foundation, enabling you to bring
all your essential gear along so you
can focus on creating unforgettable
memories.
Versatility and extra space Roof racks
are invaluable when you need extra
space or want to travel comfortably
without cramming items into the
trunk. A well-installed roof rack and
the right setup allow you to pack
beyond your vehicle’s interior capacity,
giving passengers more legroom and
creating a safer, more enjoyable ride.
It helps that roof racks can be tailored
to your specific vehicle. Choosing the
right system, often consisting of load
bars, feet, and a custom-fit kit, ensures
secure mounting.
Choosing a compatible roof rack
system One of the most crucial factors
is ensuring your roof rack system
is compatible with your vehicle’s
make and model. Online tools from
reputable suppliers can simplify this
process by allowing you to input your
car’s details and find the best fit. Once
you have the right system, installation
is usually straightforward, letting you
get road-ready in minutes.
Optimising your space ... roof boxes
and carrier baskets Adding roof boxes
or carrier baskets provides extra room
for bulky items, freeing up space inside
the vehicle. For those going on family
trips, low-profile, aerodynamic options
help minimise noise and improve
fuel efficiency, while roof platforms
are ideal for securing tents, coolers, or
other larger equipment for off-road or
camping excursions.
What about bike and water sports
gear? Exploring on two wheels or
taking advantage of South Africa’s
natural landscapes for kayaking,
paddleboarding, or surfing is more
accessible with the right roof rack. A
secure system simplifies transporting
bikes and water sports equipment,
ensuring your gear arrives safely and
is ready to go when you reach your
destination.
Safety tips for roof rack use Always
check your vehicle’s weight limits
for roof-mounted gear and avoid
exceeding the 75kg limit unless
specified by the vehicle’s manufacturer.
Before setting off, double-check that
everything is securely mounted,
balanced, and properly locked.
Periodically inspecting your roof rack
during stops is also a good habit,
especially when traveling on rougher
terrain.
Make this the year of adventure. Have
fun! For more info on selecting a
roof rack or accessories for your next
journey, visit thulestore.co.za
