Message

From The

E.D.

Reflecting on our 2024 theme

Forging Forward in Faith

(Proverbs 4:25-26), we

have drawn upon resilient hope

and enduring love as we faithfully

served as unto the Lord.

Just as gears work

“together for

a particular purpose,

we remain steadfast

in Christ.....

Just as gears work together to

transmit force and motion for a

particular purpose, we remain

steadfast in Christ through

challenges and setbacks. We

Forged ahead with creativity,

introducing innovative solutions,

launching new initiatives, and

cultivating new collaborative

partnerships. These efforts have

become a catalyst for providing

access, assistance, resources,

and opportunities to youth, young

adults, and families we serve.

Each collaborative connection, every

movement, and every turn of a gear is

symbolic of Sunshine Gospel Ministries’

intentionality and commitment to strive

daily to fulfill our mission. In 2024, we

partnered with allies and advocated in

meaningful ways that will be impactful

in combating the housing crisis in our

disinvested Chicago communities

like Woodlawn and Washington Park.

Sunshine is piloting two transformative

initiatives – Behavioral Health which

focuses on reducing health inequities

and Workforce Development

Programming Year-Round that

addresses socio-economic injustices.

Additionally, our Sunshine Community

Center Development project, a longanticipated

community resource,

answers a decade-long request

outlined in our community’s Quality of

Life Plan. These initiatives collectively

propel the growth and impact of our

mission Forward ensuring the needs

and concerns of our community are

being heard and fulfilled through our

work.

As gears interlock to create significant

movement, our SGM team’s

interconnected foundation of Faith has

been the cornerstone of our strength

that spurs us onward. It has guided us

through a time of crucial need for unity,

peace, and justice particularly as we

address the plight and well-being of

our under-resourced communities. We

have truly Forged Forward in Faith,

witnessing God’s love and provision

as the sustaining force behind our

thriving ministry programs and the

transformation of the lives we touch.

Thank you to our Sunshine Gospel

Ministries family. We appreciate you.

Your encouragement, prayers, and

support enable us to reflect Christ’s

love in meaningful and impactful ways.

As we begin the new year, we are

excited to follow the path God has set

before us. Together we celebrate 120

years of Service and Unwavering Faith

by God’s Grace. Please keep us in your

prayers.

Peace and Blessings,

A Year Of Growth

& Excellence

This year has been nothing short of

amazing for our Youth Outreach Program,

marked by academic achievements,

enriching experiences, and unforgettable

memories. Our students, staff, and community have

collaborated to make the year one of growth and

excellence.

Tutoring Success

Our tutoring program, in partnership with

Educational Endeavors, completed its second year

as a cornerstone of our academic initiatives. The

program has helped students achieve improved

grades, build confidence and make significant

strides in their studies. By providing equitable

learning opportunities, this enrichment continues to

be an invaluable resource in achieving higher grades

across the board.

Spotlight on our "Mathematical Geniuses"

Two shining stars this year were 4th graders, who

have earned the title of "mathematical geniuses"

from one of our tutors for their exceptional abilities

in math. They exemplify the incredible potential

unlocked through determination and support.

One 4th grader mastered complex algebraic

concepts with ease, solving problems and coding

that left his tutor amazed. The other 4th grader,

with his extraordinary knack for math, not only excelled in our

tutoring enrichment program but also in his regular classes.

Their achievements remind us of the transformative power of

opportunity and encouragement that can unlock remarkable

potential.

A Summer to Remember

This summer brought new and exciting enrichment

opportunities for all age groups. High schoolers participated

in culinary arts, cosmetology, barbering, and workforce

readiness training, preparing them for future careers and life

beyond the classroom. For middle school and elementary

students, the summer was filled with engaging activities such

as coding, dance, and creative arts. We also made the summer

unforgettable with fun and engaging field trips, including visits to

Lincoln Park Zoo and Sky Zone, to name a few.

Lock-Ins: Uniting Fun and Connection

One of the standout highlights of the year was our Middle

School and High School Lock-Ins. These overnight events

provided students with an opportunity to build friendships,

participate in team-building activities, and engage in enriching

discussions with each other and their mentors. From group

games and movie marathons to conversations about faith and

life, these lock-ins strengthened bonds/connectedness and

leave students eagerly anticipating the next one.

Looking Ahead

As we close out this year, we are filled with gratitude and

anticipation for what is to come. The personal growth and

achievements of our students, the dedication of our staff, and

the support of our community inspire us to aim even higher next

year. Together, we will continue to create a space where every

child can thrive and reach their God- given potential.

Here's to another year of growth, excellence and limitless

possibilities!

Familyhood

Familyhood started the year strong by offering

financial literacy opportunities through the

introduction of Dfree Lifestyle - 12 Steps to

financial freedom. In addition, winter parenting

and faith-based cohorts for men and women were

well attended and encouraged all that attended.

Through cohorts and one on ones, program

facilitators provided the mental health support

needed by the families we serve.

Recognizing the Need

As summer planning began, it became clear that

many parents were feeling overwhelmed. The

absence of school routines left children’s schedules

unstructured, creating additional stress for families

already balancing work and personal obligations.

Compounding these challenges were rising

local violence and personal life transitions. This

underscored the urgent need for a program that

could provide tools for stress management and

emotional well-being.

Introducing CALM

In response, Familyhood launched CALM—a

four-part series that combined mindfulness,

deep breathing, and creative expression to help

families navigate life’s pressures. Led by a licensed

art therapist, each session provided simple yet

transformative techniques. Participants used art as

a therapeutic outlet, releasing emotional tension and

restoring peace.

One powerful moment came from a 13-year-old girl

who marveled at the peace she felt working with

clay—an experience she had never encountered

before, as her school does not offer opportunities for

artistic expression.

Immediate Impact

The series quickly proved transformative. Many

families shared how they were already incorporating

mindfulness, art, and breathing techniques into their

daily routines to manage stress. CALM provided

not just tools but a sense of empowerment and

connection, allowing families to rediscover the

therapeutic benefits of creativity.

Empowering Women

In addition to CALM, Familyhood hosted its first women's

brunch, offering a dedicated space for women to address the

unique challenges they face. Led by a psychologist, the event

introduced mindfulness practices that alleviated stress, anxiety,

and even chronic pain. Witnessing the relief and transformation

among participants was inspiring, as women often carrying

heavy responsibilities experienced a newfound sense of peace.

Following the brunch, many women committed to their mental

well-being by joining four-week mindfulness and relaxation

cohorts. This additional layer of support strengthened their

resolve to prioritize their health and that of their families.

Looking Ahead

As Familyhood plans for 2025, the Mental Health Initiative is

set to expand. Plans include introducing a co-ed mental health

brunch, welcoming 30 new families, and reaching a total of

280 families with holistic mental health resources. With God’s

guidance, Familyhood remains steadfast in its mission to bring

peace, healing, and empowerment to families across the city.

Familyhood’s continued commitment to mental health reflects

its deep-rooted belief in the power of connection, creativity, and

community to transform lives.

The Embrace Of

Flourishing Community

Initiative

A Journey of Healing and Hope

On Chicago’s South Side, a quiet yet

profound transformation is taking

shape. Sunshine’s Flourishing

Community Initiative (FCI) is tackling

one of the city’s most pressing public health crises:

gun violence. In the heart of the 20th Ward—a

community too often overlooked and left to face its

challenges alone— FCI is planting seeds of healing,

hope, and renewal.

The year began with FCI deepening its collaborative

efforts with organizations across Chicago,

solidifying partnerships that amplify its impact. By

expanding mental health services and increasing

access to holistic care, the program supported 48

individuals committed to personal recovery from

trauma. Central to this success has been FCI’s

partnership with Victim Advocates, bridging

the gap between the immediate aftermath of

gun violence and the long-term process of

emotional healing. Additionally, its collaboration

with University of Chicago Medicine has

proven invaluable, ensuring survivors receive

comprehensive care following their hospital

discharge, allowing the journey toward recovery

to extend beyond the emergency room. In 2024,

FCI hosted two pivotal events designed to create

lasting change:

• The Youth Summit, which educated young

people on safety and provided summer

employment opportunities.

• The Family Summit, a space for grieving

families to access therapeutic support and

begin their healing journeys.

The most powerful moments in FCI’s work arise

when clients take ownership of their healing

process. Through personalized mentoring, case

management, and counseling, survivors are

discovering renewed strength and purpose.

Housing Equity

Initiative

Building A Path To Homeownership and

Community Growth

such as lower interest rates, payment plans, and

additional resources. These efforts are critical

steps toward ensuring families can retain their

homes and build long-term wealth.

Homeownership Programs: Growth and

Impact

Over the past year, HEI’s Home Buyer Readiness

Program (HBRP) evolved from a simple down

payment assistance initiative into a comprehensive

program. HBRP addresses the challenges of

homeownership by equipping participants with the

tools, knowledge, and support needed to navigate

the process confidently.

Through workshops, educational resources,

and one-on-one counseling, participants learn

everything from mortgage qualification basics to

navigating the housing market. The program goes

beyond financial preparation, offering emotional

and practical support to ensure long-term success.

In 2024, our Tax Sale Benevolence Program

broadened its focus. Initially designed to assist

families at risk of losing their homes due to the

Tax Sale, the program now includes education

on estate planning. Through a new partnership

with an attorney, we’ve helped families establish

estate plans to secure their properties for future

generations.

Housing Equity Initiative (HEI) also joined the

Property Tax Task Force, led by Senator Robert

Peters and the Cook County Treasurer’s Office.

This collaboration aims to develop solutions for

homeowners facing delinquent property taxes,

Collaborative Partnerships Driving Change

HEI’s growth with neighborhood revitalization

through affordable housing has been fueled by

strong partnerships, particularly with United Power

for Action and Justice (UPJ.) Together, we address

the urgent need for accessible homeownership

in our communities. A significant milestone was

achieved through Mayor Brandon Johnson’s

Cut the Red Tape Initiative, which aims to make

city-owned land more accessible for community

development.

In May 2024, our UPJ team crafted an ordinance

that facilitated the release of 500 city-owned

lots to UPJ-affiliated organizations. This

groundbreaking ordinance, approved by the City

Council, set the stage for unprecedented growth in

community development and housing accessibility.

Milestones in Development

October 2024 marked a pivotal moment for HEI

when UPJ organizations closed on 81 lots, with four

acquired by HEI. This achievement propelled our

vision forward, enabling us to begin rehabbing

one home and preparing for the construction

of a new multi-unit build. We anticipate closing

on ten more properties by spring 2025, further

expanding our portfolio.

With each property acquisition, the Home Buyer

Readiness Program (HBRP) stands ready to

guide well-prepared homebuyers into their new

homes. By the time these homes are completed,

families will have the confidence, knowledge, and

tools to make them their own.

Transforming Land and Lives

Through God’s blessings, HEI continues to

transform vacant land into thriving communities.

Each home we develop is more than a

structure—it’s a foundation for generational

wealth and a brighter future. We remain

committed to creating opportunities for families

to achieve homeownership, fostering stability and

growth in our neighborhoods.

Looking Ahead

HEI is committed to expanding its programs,

building relationships, and creating opportunities

for families to thrive. As we continue to develop

homes and empower families, our mission

remains clear: to transform communities and

create generational wealth through sustainable

homeownership.

With every milestone, we witness the power of

faith, collaboration, and determination in shaping

a brighter future for our neighborhoods.

New Bridges

A Year of Transition and Vision for

BridgeBuilders

The year 2024 marked a season of transition

and renewal for the BridgeBuilders (BB)

program. After an extensive search, we

were delighted to welcome David Lee as the new

BridgeBuilders Manager in October 2024. David

brings fresh energy and a deep commitment to

the mission of Sunshine Gospel Ministries. Since

joining SGM in October 2024, David has had

the privilege of meeting with several community

partners, reconnecting with past BridgeBuilders

participants, and exploring new opportunities for

collaboration.

One of David’s highlights has been meeting Bill

Hill, a dedicated community gardener and activist.

Bill, who has partnered with SGM for seven years,

manages multiple community gardens across

Chicago. Through his work, he transforms vacant

lots on the South Side into flourishing green

spaces, embodying the concept of beauty rising

from ashes. David, says, “Bill Hill’s gardens are a

testament to God’s redemptive work, showing

beauty within brokenness.”

The Mission of BridgeBuilders

Since its inception in 2004, BridgeBuilders has

aimed to connect guests from outside communities

with the Woodlawn neighborhood to foster a

deeper understanding of both its beauty and

challenges. Guests are invited to witness the

transformation of “beauty from ashes,” learn

God’s heart for justice and mercy, and carry these

lessons back to their own communities.

As Micah 6:8 reminds us, “He has shown you, O

mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord

require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy, and

to walk humbly with your God.”

Despite the daunting challenges of systemic

inequality, racism, food insecurity, community

violence, and poverty, this scripture provides a

guiding light for our work.

Transforming Lives and Communities

Through programs like poverty simulations and

community engagement projects, BridgeBuilders

equips men and women across sectors—law, medicine,

business, policy-making, and more—with the tools to

create meaningful change. We aim to inspire participants

to embrace their vocations with a heart for justice and

mercy, bringing the principles of Micah 6:8 to every

sphere of influence.

Looking Ahead

In the coming year, BridgeBuilders is committed to

empowering and enriching each guest by helping them

align their purpose with the principles of Micah 6:8. We

are already re-engaging with previous groups and have

secured bookings for 2025.

66

BridgeBuilders Hosted

68

Poverty Simulation Participants

BridgeBuilders envisions equipping participants to

integrate justice and mercy into their vocations, whether

in medicine, law, urban planning, or other fields.

For example:

• A young lawyer might advocate for justice in the

courtroom, ensuring dignity and respect for every

client.

• A doctor could address systemic inequalities in

healthcare, providing equitable care for marginalized

communities.

• A civil engineer or city planner might design

equitable urban spaces, preventing environmental

harm to vulnerable neighborhoods like East Side or

Hegewisch.

36

Day of Groups On Site

While we pray that some participants will eventually

relocate to communities like Woodlawn or Washington

Park—following the example of a few who already

have—the true impact of BridgeBuilders lies in inspiring

participants to live out their calling with justice and mercy

wherever they are. Together, we are building

bridges of understanding, compassion, and lasting

change.

Sunshine Community Center

Investing in Hope and Transformation

Sunshine Gospel Ministries (SGM)

has been a brilliant beacon of hope

and transformation in communities

throughout Chicago for over a century.

As we enter 2025, SGM celebrates 120 years of

service and continues to show a commitment to

fostering positive change, empowering families,

and strengthening neighborhoods. Through

decades of service, our programs have supported

youth, nurtured families, and provided vital

resources to uplift the community we cherish.

To continue and expand this mission, we are proud

to launch our Sunshine Community Center Capital

Campaign—a bold and transformative effort to

secure the resources needed to build, improve,

and sustain the spaces where hope comes to life.

Why This Campaign Matters

The heart of this campaign is simple: expanding

impact and capacity. Our facilities are the

cornerstone of our work. By enhancing our space,

we will:

• Serve more families, youth and seniors through

expanded programming.

• Create modern, welcoming, and accessible

spaces for education, the arts, physical fitness,

mentorship, and community gatherings.

• Provide resources that meet today’s needs

while preparing for a thriving future.

Why A Community Center

Washington Park and its surrounding

communities were once vibrant neighborhoods

where families took pride in their homes and

communities. However, over the past few

decades, these communities have experienced

a decline in home values and neighborhood

stability. There has been an increase in violence

and unemployment. Studies have shown a 22%

increase in home values when homes are within

a 0.2 to 0.5-mile radius of a community center,

as well as, a significant decrease in violence and

the unemployment rate with an increase in job

opportunities and relevant programming. Over

the last three years, we have engaged with the

community and listened to their needs regarding

the community center. We have received

commitments from community partners and

organizations who support the Center, with some

planning to share space to provide programming

and activities. The Sunshine Community Center

will include:

• Public Retail Café

• Music Room, Recording Studio,

• Visual and Graphic Arts Space

• Entrepreneurship Training & Support

• Small Business Pop-Up Markets

• Fitness Center & Dance Studio

• Demonstration Kitchen (nutrition)

• Community space for events

• 2-Basketball Court-Sized Gym with

bleacher seating

• Expanded Youth & Senior Programming

• Office Rental Space for Local Business

• Lounge Areas

• Art Gallery

• Multi-purpose outdoor space for events, small

concert venue, etc.

The construction of the community center represents

a crucial step toward restoring pride and stability in

Washington Park and the surrounding neighborhoods.

By collaborating with community partners and offering

impactful programming, we aim to create a vibrant hub that

fosters connection, growth, and opportunity for residents.

Together, we can build a sense of community, elevate home

values, and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.

Our Vision

The Capital Campaign will enable Sunshine Gospel

Ministries to:

COMMUNITY

IMPACT

2K

1 Build a new facility that will be safe, functional, and

inspiring spaces for all.

Served Annually

2 Expand capacity to reach more individuals in need of lifechanging

opportunities.

3 Sustain programming that addresses systemic

challenges, builds community leaders, and promotes

hope and dignity for generations to come.

Your Role In This Vision: Capital Campaign 2025

We cannot do this alone. Our mission has always been powered

by the generosity, faith, and partnership of those who believe

in the power of hope, community, and transformation. By supporting

the Capital Campaign, you will directly contribute to

strengthening lives, investing in future leaders, and building a

brighter tomorrow.

Together, we can ensure Sunshine Gospel Ministry remains a
