Foreword

I never meant for this to happen. It started as a resolution of sorts— a simple, solitary ritual. I would get out on Sunday mornings

and take a few photos at the Dupont Farmers Market, even if it was the only time I used my camera all week. Zeke’s cold

brew and hot empanadas were pretty enticing, and I figured I could crawl out of my cave on Riggs Place by 1pm, no matter

the tribulations of Saturday night. Besides, the farmers market is a goldmine for photographers. There exists all manner of

subjects: street scenes, still life, portraiture, architecture, food (of course), plus lots and lots of cute dogs.

It wasn’t long before I encountered some repetition among the camera-carrying characters of the market. An affable guy with

a silly mustache who called himself Lloyd appeared two weeks in a row, at nearly the same moment and at the very same spot.

We would run into each other again at Foxtrot on Q, where he was sat with a friend, alongside her friend, who expressed an

interest in meeting up to practice taking photos. We agreed to meet the following week at the Dupont Circle Fountain. And so

November 2023 marked the first iteration of the yet-to-be-named group—me, Jeremy’s friend-of-a-friend Dayna, and my old

college friend-turned-neighbor, Marissa. Just the three of us. From that point, I made it my mission to make it a monthly “thing”

and invite any photographer I encountered on the street (provided they didn’t look too much like a tourist), often cutting out

of conversations mid-sentence to run up on some unsuspecting shutterbug.

For the December meet-up, 3 grew to a handful. In January, on possibly the coldest day of 2024, we had a dozen, then 20 in

February, 30 in March, and by May, a lively group of roughly 50 people (and probably 100 cameras) at the Georgetown Waterfront.

While many of the first members of this community were personally accosted and recruited by me, many more came

because a friend put them on. Each month brought new faces of all ages, experience levels, and photographic styles. As it

turns out, the network effect is very, very real.

I have sought to differentiate our group from others by, perhaps ironically, focusing less on photography and more on intentional

engagement with other photographers. I often say that I tend take my worst photos of the month at our meetup, but

only because I’m too distracted speaking to such interesting people. To me, that’s a beautiful thing. This book, and the gallery

weekend coinciding with its release, celebrates this diverse group of individuals, first and foremost— along with the unique

personal histories and life experiences that influence their approach to taking photos.

With this grand experiment, I believe we have firmly struck down the insidious idea taking root around the country— that one

group’s success portends another group’s failure. We have all witnessed the groundswell of energy in the past year, emanating

from every corner of the DMV photography community. This is not to say that our photo walks were in some way the seed of

this swelling creative culture. On the contrary, many distinct photography communities came before us, and I am grateful to

take part in a thriving creative ecosystem that has something for everyone. I am especially proud for Dupont Photo Walk to

exist harmoniously, even mutualistically, alongside our friends DC Film Collective and Baltimore Scenes, among many others

organizing for the photographic arts. For all my efforts, this community has paid me back tenfold— in boundless inspiration

and lifelong friends— and I only wish the same for you. I hope you’ll join us around the fountain soon!

,

Gabriel Adler

Raised in the Bible Belt by a couple of Yankee parents, Gabriel has always had

one ear to the ground. In high school, this took the form of quiet time in the

darkroom during free periods where Gabriel found his love of photography and,

specifically, film photography. While digital (top left) allows for more control in

the unpredictable setting of a concert, a return is always made to 35mm film

(top right, bottom left, bottom right).

As a writer, Gabriel is always looking for the next story, but some stories are

better captured with the lens than the pen. His passions for sports and music

are apparent in his work, but his love of human connection and gratitude for the

people and places that make this world special are what continue to drive Gabriel’s

art. For this reason, his brother’s engagement in his childhood backyard

(bottom left) is one of his favorite shoots from the past year.

Christian Campo

Christian fell in love with photography from the moment he received his first

camera on his tenth birthday. Since that moment, he couldn’t stop framing

things in his head to take a good shot. A Colombian native, Christian grew up in

Cali, migrated to the US and lived in NYC. He pursued his passion for space and

graduated as an electrical engineer. This path led him to work as an electronics

designer for NASA missions. However, he kept dreaming to take his photography

to the next level and become a photographer. Ever since he joined Dupont

Photo Walk, he’s been able to learn from the community, which has encouraged

him to work on his passion. His main focus is on street photography where he

aims to capture that moment you can’t replicate.

Ben Cannon

Hi, I’m Ben. This is the first time I’ve submitted any work, of any kind, anywhere.

Thank you to Dupont Photo Walk for this opportunity. This is exciting and I’m

grateful. I come to photography as someone who often finds themselves daydreaming

about our existence. I am amazed that chemicals and plastic make it

possible for us to look back in time. I also think about what that person must

have been smoking when that was discovered. If you know, kindly pass it on.

Curiosity is what drives me to take pictures. I think there is great personal and

connective clarity to be gained from this art. I’m exploring 6x9 film with the Fuji

GL690 and “3D” photos. Whatever captures my curiosity next, I hope you’ll consider

tagging along. Cheers.

Sam Connors

Sam enjoys photographing people and their environments, capturing the way

humans interact with the world around them. His work blurs the line between

subject and space, emphasizing the nature of being.

He currently shoots in both digital and 135 film formats, predominantly on Fuji

X and Nikon F systems. Sam’s inspirations include Alex Webb, Fan Ho, Vivian

Maier, Daidō Moriyama, and Arthur Tress.

Originally from central New York, Sam has lived in the District for 8 years. When

he’s not photographing he’s traveling small towns via Amtrak, hiking or gaming.

He can also make a mean cocktail and enjoys chatting with strangers in bars.

For 2025 Sam plans to develop his own film at home, attend more DPWs, and

continue to work on finding his own expression of photography.

Stephen Darling

My name is Stephen Darling, and I’m from Arlington, Virginia. I’ve been passionate

about photography since I got my first digital camera at sixteen. After

graduating college, moving to a new city, and starting a new job, I found myself

taking fewer photos and losing touch with the creative side of photography. I

had experimented with film over the years, but I had never fully transitioned to

it. When I started feeling uninspired with my usual camera, I decided to commit

to a 35mm point-and-shoot. Switching to this camera completely changed how

I approach photography. It’s now my primary tool, and I take it almost everywhere.

Some of my best photos have come from using this low-profile setup.

All of these photos were taken with my pocket sized 35mm point and shoot. The

left and right images were shot on Kodak Colorplus (I love everything about this

film) and the middle was shot on Kodak Tri-X black and white film. The first image

is of the Mona Lisa in the Louve. I hardly remember actually seeing the famous

painting, but this image perfectly captures what I felt in that moment: frenzied.

Ironically, I liked the painting opposite the Mona Lisa more. I love the movement

in the second photo. I really enjoy the framing of this shot and I love how simple

it is. I just think it looks nice, and I would like it hung up on my wall. The third and

final photo is one of my favorites. It’s been my phone’s background for over 2

years at this point. I love flowers, I love bright colored flowers, and I especially

love bright colored flowers framed against some kind of negative space like the

sky. This photo also has a building in it, and I think the light is hitting it pretty

well. My friends would call this a “Stephen Darling photo,” and I would be inclined

to agree with them.

Javon Davis is a civil rights attorney by day and a film photographer whenever

he can. Looking for a creative outlet while studying for the bar exam, Javon

picked up a cheap film camera and hasn’t stopped since. Film photography

has become his favorite way to capture his travels, from small Southern towns

to temples and mountain tops abroad. Now with a collection of four cameras,

Javon continues to experiment with new film and expand his film knowledge.

Tanner Donaldson

My name is Tanner Donaldson, originally from Eugene, Oregon. My love for photography

began in high school, where I took multiple classes and had access to

a dark room, sparking a passion that’s only grown since. At 18, I joined the Navy,

which led to San Diego, becoming my second home, and after separating, I met

my wonderful wife Cassie. In 2021, I joined the Coast Guard, which brought us

to Washington, DC. Initially, we weren’t thrilled about the move, but through the

local photography community we’ve made great friends and have come to really

enjoy our time here. Some of my other interests outside photography include

live music, hiking, running, and travel. Photography continues to be a big part

of my life, and I am grateful for the experiences and people it’s brought into my

journey.

Celina Magda Donis

Celina was born into a big family of 8 in Queens, NY. They have called various

places home— Lawrence (MA), New Orleans (LA), and a village in Kosovo— and

are currently located in Washington, DC. Being one of the youngest members

of their first-gen family, Celina grew up observing human interactions and their

surroundings. They turned to photography as a way of documenting unique

moments in time. Each frame is a mediation on space, where architecture and

landscapes merge with fleeting human moments, revealing stories of solitude,

connection, and the unspoken dialogue and continuous interplay between people

and the environments in which they exist.

Meaza Getachew

Meaza Getachew is an independent, hobbyist film photographer and community

builder. Her photography is grounded in capturing both the richness and mundane

of everyday life - with an emphasis on the people, places, and stories that

shape my environment. Whether photographing the architectural beauty of a

city or exploring the intimate depths of portraiture, she is driven by the desire to

connect more deeply with the world around her and uses photography to freeze

and document important or moving moments in time. Her portrait work has

further expanded her ability to forge meaningful connections with her subjects

through the lens. In February 2024, Meaza started the Baltimore PhotoWalks to

connect with fellow local photographers and cultivate a stronger bond with her

community. As a curator of Baltimore Scenes, she organizes monthly photowalks

and other events in Baltimore that foster collaboration among artists and

photographers outside of the limitations of social media platforms.

Caleb Hamilton

Caleb was born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area. He studied filmmaking

in college, which lead him to photography as a hobby. He started taking pictures

with his iPhone and shared them to Instagram. He’d soon graduate to a

DSLR, the Nikon D3500. Eventually he’d begin seeing people post photos taken

with disposable cameras; a trend he would be late to and give up on after one

disposable of his own. He then began researching film photography and pointand-shoot

35mm cameras, eventually acquiring his first: a Nikon L35AF. His

collection would later grow to include a Minolta X-500, Nikon F3, and Mamiya

645 1000S. Caleb describes his approach to photography as “cinematic,” and

composes his photos as he would a shot in a movie. Aside from photography,

he enjoys movies, musical theatre, and traveling. He hopes to one day capture

a bolt of lightning on film.

Amy discovered her love for film photography after her mom gifted her an old

film camera in late 2023. Since then, it’s become one of her most fulfilling creative

outlets. She values the slow, intentional process of shooting film and the

endless opportunities to learn and grow with the medium. Her work often captures

everyday moments from her life, focusing on the feelings, people, places,

and the ordinary beauty that surrounds us.

The photos she selected for this book reflect some of her favorite travels and

locations from the past year, including NYC, Shenandoah, Mount Rainier, Glen

Echo, and the Outer Banks. While not all were taken locally, they connect to the

inspiration she finds through Dupont Photo Walks. This community has encouraged

her to explore, share ideas, and grow as a photographer.

Tyler Hooks

Tyler Hooks is a Washington D.C. based photographer that shoots fine art and

commercial work. Her main focus is in fashion, beauty, and interior design. She

grew up in rural West Virginia and got a master’s degree in Fashion Photography

from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Her photos take inspiration from nature at every step of the process. You can

find her scouting locations along the backroads of her hometown, leading to

rivers, fields, and unique old buildings.

When shooting in the studio, she prefers minimal backgrounds and soft light

that make you focus on the raw beauty of her subject. She also likes to have

models come with natural hair, minimal makeup, and lived-in clothes.

Tyler shoots primarily with a 50mm lens, because it replicates how the human

Amanda Johnson

Amanda Johnson is a photographer based in Centreville, Virginia, who works

primarily with 35mm film. Her work draws inspiration from her inner world and

the natural rhythms surrounding her. Amanda’s passion for photography began

in high school, though her love for capturing moments started much earlier-she

often photographed her dolls using disposable cameras as a child.

For Amanda, photography has always been a way to deepen her appreciation

for life’s subtleties.

Self-portraiture is at the heart of Amanda’s creative practice. She sees it as a

form of meditation, allowing her to visualize emotions and later step outside

herself to interpret body language and inner states. Amanda takes pride in her

work when it evokes an emotional connection, reflecting her belief that art is a

bridge between personal experience and shared feeling.

Aside from self-portraits, Amanda’s favorite subjects to photograph include her

family, vintage cars, and flowers. She loves every aspect of the photographic

process— from conceptualizing an idea to selecting the perfect film stock, styling,

modeling, and interpreting the final image. Recently, she has returned to

developing her own film, reconnecting with the tactile, hands-on elements of her

craft. Her preference for 35mm film stems from its intentionality. Film requires

care and thoughtfulness in composition, encouraging Amanda to slow down and

engage deeply with each shot. She believes digital photography captures how a

moment looks, while film captures how a moment feels-digital is reality, whereas

film evokes memory.

In November 2024, Amanda attended her first Dupont Photo Walk in Old Town

Alexandria, where she enjoyed connecting with other photographers and discussing

their creative processes. She is excited to continue getting to know

the photography community in the DC area and draw inspiration from fellow

creatives.

Through photography, Amanda articulates emotions that words often cannot,

creating visual narratives that invite viewers into her world.

Jeremy/Lloyd Johnson

Jeremy / Lloyd is a life tourist from Hamilton, Montana, who happens to carry a

film camera with him almost everywhere. To him, film photography is more than

a medium, it’s a philosophy of limitation and intentionality. With a limited number

of frames to tell a story, each shot becomes an opportunity to capture not just

a moment, but its entire essence. The constraints of film force deep connection

between artist and the subject, turning each frame into a reflection of both the

physical and mental presence required to create it. Slowing down, embracing

the impermanence of each exposure, I find that capturing less often means

capturing more. In a world that moves fast, film reminds me to be present and

to focus.

Danielle Kalavritinos

Danielle is a digital and film photographer who loves capturing life’s moments.

Originally from Northern Virginia, she has traveled far and wide, taking photos

along the way. Her photography journey didn’t begin until college. While attending

Ohio University for Computer Science she met a group of friends who

fostered each others’ love for creating. Between study sessions, they would

watch YouTube cinematography guides and short-form films. Videography was

her first entry into using a camera, and because of this, she ended up taking an

elective in film before graduating.

Moving to Charlotte, NC for Danielle’s first job after graduation, she continued

developing her love of a photo/video hobby. She made friends there who would

spend weekends in the Blue Ridge Mountains, car camping at night, and hiking

to take photos during the day. This was when she purchased a Sony a7iii from

Facebook marketplace, her first true professional-grade camera. The rest, as

they say, is history.

Since then, in late 2019, Danielle has spent a large portion of her free time refining

her photography style and traveling to capture the world. From nature

landscapes to cityscapes, from stunning sunsets to everyday life, everything is

fair game. The common theme through all the different locations is to document

life in a way that the photos feel like memories rather than just pretty pictures.

Danielle’s first film camera was a Pentax K1000 purchased in the late summer of

2020, so most of her photography career has been a balance of film and digital.

The advantage of learning both mediums so close to each other was how they

melded together in her style. Film photography has influenced her editing methodology

on digital quite a lot, helping to evoke that nostalgic feeling that film so

naturally conveys. She now shoots mainly using the Sony a7IV, Fuji GW690II, and

the Pentax K1000.

Andy is an enthusiastic photography hobbyist and freelance photojournalist focused

on documenting outdoor adventures and cycling culture. A founder of

Great Eskape, a DC-based off-road cycling team, he is a regular contributor to

his favorite cycling and outdoors focused publication, The Radavist. The overlap

between adventure cycling and analogue photography is Andy’s happy place.

His all-time favorite photography projects have involved carrying heavy, vintage

cameras by bicycle across hundreds of miles of rugged back country.

Dupont Photo Walk History:

For the collection of four images opposite, Andy stayed closer to home. Something

most people, DC residents included, find surprising about DC is that the

culture around adventure cycling is strong, diverse, and vibrant here. Photos

sport, where competition takes place on bikes that resemble road bikes, on

tracks that more resemble mountain bike courses. DC hosts a ‘cross race every

Stefano Lonzano (b. 1991) is an American analog photographer and multimedia

artist focused on capturing meaningful narratives through film. His approach to

35mm photography draws from cinematic composition and the storytelling of

everyday life—capturing raw moments through portraiture and street photography.

Film photography grounds his practice in patience and presence, allowing

deeper connection with each moment he captures. Whether documenting the

human experience through portraits or exploring architectural spaces, he’s always

searching for the deeper narrative within each frame. Through his work,

Stefano aims to build and strengthen communities, using photography as a

John Rudolph Mueller

John Rudolph Mueller was born in New Jersey on December 27, 1990. Music

was his first love, taking piano lessons from an early age and picking up any instrument

he could get his hands on— trombone, cello, guitar, and more. In high

school, he began to experiment with some strange new instruments including

his school’s Canon 5D and a Minolta XG-M he bought off of Craigslist. From

that point began a life-long love of capturing memories of people and places

on memory cards and film. It is often said that photos gain value over time, and

while his photos from these early days lack the vision and technical precision of

his more recent work, they remain treasured favorites.

For 7 years, while living in Manhattan, photography took a back seat as John

began his career as an educator. John earned certification as a Special Education

teacher and founded the music program at Bronx Bridges High School.

He remains proud that every student in his first classes could play piano with

two hands by the end of the semester. While living back in New Jersey during

the COVID era, his mother’s partner gifted him a Canon AE-1 Program, and the

flame was reignited. A move to the nation’s capital in July 2022 provided exciting

new subject matter and endless opportunities for connection.

Since then, John has shot ~20,000 images, primarily with cameras that have

what he considers creatively useful limitations. The fixed 35mm-equivalent focal

lengths of the Fujifilm X100V and Olympus XA, alongside the zone-focusing

Pentax 17 and Nikonos V force the photographer to be engaged physically and

mentally. And shooting mostly fixed-lens cameras with built-in flash reduces decision

paralysis or wondering whether you brought the right gear.

John tends to photograph whatever draws his eye, attempting to work it into

a visually appealing canvas— whether it’s street scenes, flowers, concerts, or

landscapes. Though he loves making images, he primarily sees himself as a

connector in the DMV photography community and gains immeasurable energy

and inspiration from the artists in this book, as well as many others who have

participated with Dupont Photo Walk in the past year.

is a close contender; the photos chosen were captured with these two lenses.

The snacking green sea turtle and gnarled tree facing Mānana Island were captured

while wandering Oʻahu, Hawaii.

Captured in the bottom left, the tree’s autumn leaves harmonized with the storefront

in Washington, DC.

The “Loch Ness Monster” was sighted in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, Maryland.

Joy’s favorite photo is in the center. Photographed is one of the many unsung,

hard-working heroes of the city. This may have been an average day on the job

for this individual, but Joy saw the heroic nature of their work and felt inspired.

Alex Peljovich

All of Alex’s work is shot on film to give a more organic and timeless nature to

the images. He also prefers to use film cameras because of the mechanical feeling

and enjoyment that they give. In addition to being shot on film, the photographs

presented here were all self-developed and self-scanned: by controlling

every step in the process, Alex is given more creative control over his images.

The images on the top row present a slice of life in Washington, D.C. On the

left, the black and white photo of the man with the hat was shot from the hip

in a quick capture at the Dupont Farmers Market. The artist’s intent was to use

the angled perspective to make the subject appear almost larger than life. The

center image of the people in costume demonstrates Alex’s occasional use of

flash to isolate his subjects from the background and add pops of color when

shooting color film. The image on the right provides a vision of an urban landscape

while using an experimental film to bring out wild colors and halations,

giving the food trucks an otherworldly vibe.

Finally, whereas the top images were shot with more conventional 35 mm cameras,

the bottom panorama was created by a specialty “swing lens” camera that

Tobias Shaw

Liberation 1 (left) was captured at the Free Palestine march in Washington DC

on November 4th. Liberation 2 (right) was captured on the Upper West Side in

NYC towards the end of November.

There is an important difference between these images that is maybe just visible

to me. I would classify Liberation 1 as reportage as the image is largely unchanged

from the moment I shot it. Liberation 2 is not. I spent 20 minutes or so

watching and capturing people walking by these posters. Some glanced, some

didn’t, none stopped. The final image presented here is a composite of 3 separate

passing figures. For me, the central figure adds a subtle surrealism with the

only sign of motion blur that sets it apart from the two foreground figures who

were captured at a much higher shutter speed. It was important to me that the

figures passing are anonymous, the only faces present are those in the posters.

I didn’t originally intend these two images to be presented as a diptych, but I feel

seeing them together adds an interesting layer of context to both. It also raises

questions for me about how we can contrast two things without lending them

a false equivalency. The October 7th attacks on Israel killed 1,195 Israelis and

around 500 Israelis have been killed in the fighting since. As of Jan 15th, 2025,

Palestinian health authorities say more than 46,600 Palestinians have been killed

since the October 7th attacks. Strange timing, but as I sat down to write this I

saw that a ceasefire deal has just been reached between Israel and Hamas. Shalom

aleichem. As-salamu alaykum. Peace be upon us all.

When not shooting for clients, Tobias Shaw’s focus is on portraiture, reportage,

Smithsonian’s climate initiative, Our Shared Future: Life on a Sustainable Planet.

It debuted at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, earning global recognition.

Simpson’s photography journey began at 17 when his father loaned him a Nikon

of thirds and chiaroscuro—an evocative interplay of light and shadow championed

by Renaissance master Caravaggio—his work resonates with a cinematic

depth and emotional intensity.

An active member of creative communities along the East Coast, Simpson finds

inspiration in collaboration with peers and fellow artists. This spirit of innovation

The second image shows a woman browsing a flower stall at the busy Pike Place

Market in Seattle, WA. Richard was drawn to the variety of colors in this image,

the bustle of the crowd, and the pose of the main subject in the center of the

frame.

The third image is also one of Richard’s earliest shots. He was drawn to this

image for the symmetry of the plane over the Lincoln Memorial and the warmth

of the sunset.

The final image depicts a buck deer grazing through an empty field at Shenandoah

National Park. In this image, Richard was drawn to how the sunset paints

the field a rich red color as well as the stark outline of the deer in the center of

the shot.

As a relatively new photographer, Richard is still developing his artistic voice,

but he is consistently inspired and encouraged by the phenomenal photography

community in DC and the Dupont Photo Walk.

Diego Vapore

Hi! I’m a photographer and visual storyteller with a background in visual and

strategic communication. My creative journey has always been fueled by a passion

for framing moments that tell stories—stories of connection between people,

places, and the spaces they share. This experience has shaped my ability to

blend technical expertise with an artistic perspective, creating visually striking

images that capture beauty and emotion in hidden corners, natural landscapes,

and urban environments. Each photograph I take is thoughtfully composed,

combining all the elements to create something worth exploring.

With an artistic approach grounded in my design background, I focus on structure,

spatial harmony, and depth, uncovering the subtle poetry in usually overlooked

moments and places. My style is about discovering the stories waiting to

be revealed in the interplay of light, shadow, and composition.

Dupont Photo Walk History:

I invite you to explore my work, connect with the stories it tells, and experience

the beauty within each frame.

Phillip Waller

Phillip Waller is an Arlington, Va., based photographer and communications professional.

Phillip’s style is heavily-influenced by the photojournalism he studied

and practiced while in college. His recent work has been primarily in film, a medium

he started using heavily in October of 2023 after inheriting two 1953 film

cameras from his grandfather, the man who first inspired him to pick up a camera

as more than a gadget. He is now focused on bending the cost curve for film

photography by shooting, developing, scanning, and darkroom printing his work

without the help of a lab, and sharing those tools with others. Phillip has been

a regular attendee of the Dupont Photo Walk, first joining in February of 2024.

This selection represents four scenes from Dupont Photo Walks taken on black

and white film. The scenes depict the people and moments that have made the

walks a regular feature for many members over the past year.

dark interior of the cafe provided a welcome reprieve from the heat.

Aaron Walsh

Aaron has lived his whole life in Northern VA. His interest in film photography

was rediscovered in late 2021, when he discovered the manual for his mother’s

Nikon FM. While the FM was never found, a Nikon FE was quickly acquired. After

a few rolls, he was quickly hooked on the tactile experience of using a film camera.

Since then, he’s worked to construct a darkroom in his own home, working

on his printing skills and shooting exclusively black and white film. His influences

include the classic Magnum street photographers like Cartier Bresson as well as

more contemporary figures such as Trent Parke and Allen Schaller.

Dupont Photo Walk History:

The following images are from a series taken at the Georgetown waterfront. As

part of his journey to improve his street photography skills, Aaron frequented

the Georgetown waterfront in 2023, viewing how the different light, weather,

and people interacted together. Part of an ongoing project, look out for more

work at the waters edge. All three were taken on B&W film developed by Aaron

in his apartment darkroom.
